Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book has been considered the bible of breast-care books since it appeared in 1990. In 1995, Love completely updated the book in a 600-page second edition, including new biopsy and screening methods, implants, the pros and cons of hormone therapy, new discoveries in breast-cancer treatment, and many other topics. Every chapter has been rewritten, with the exception of the anatomy chapter ("The breast, I'm glad to report, is still located on the chest!"). Love presents copious medical information in a simple, welcoming style, and plentiful illustrations make the information even clearer. About two-thirds of the book deals with breast cancer: risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnosis, staging, emotions, treatment options, surgery, alternative treatments, clinical trials, and more. But the book isn't just about breast cancer. It's also about breast development, physiology, bras, nursing, sexuality--if it has to do with breasts, Love discusses it. Love also debunks breast myths: underwire bras do not cause cancer, neither do bruises or injuries; "fibrocystic disease" isn't really a disease. The book includes a wealth of resources: books, treatment centers, and organizations (but no Web sites--perhaps in the third edition?). --Joan Price

An Invaluable Resource for those facing Breast Cancer.......2007-10-14
When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago, this was one of the first resources we found. Dr. Love has dedicated herself to both research, healing and writing about breast cancer. In my mind she has done an admirable job.
This is not an easy read, nor is it always easy to understand what Dr. Love is saying. The book is replete with medical terminology and processes. Yet if one is to beat or even understand breast cancer, this information is indispensable.
We live in the triangle area of North Carolina where there are many excellent cancer resources, yet this book almost always matched the excellent medical advice we got, even when my wife's tumor was so complicated that it required outside expertise from Sloan-Kettering in NY and an expert at Vanderbilt Univ in TN.
Make no mistake, it was tough plowing through the arcane terminology. But my wife's life depended on it. Dr. Love's discussion of the choices a woman must make was both insightful and compassionate and a good ancillary resource in the process we both went through. While I am far from a medical expert, I think this book is the bible of resources on the subject. I could not recommend it more highly.

This is a great book. I purchased this for my aunt and together we have been able to understand what she could expect with each step of surgery and possibe treatment.
The Bible of Breast's Books.......2007-09-06
This is the most complete and readable book on the breast. If you are diagnised with breast cancer, this book is the one to buy. You don't have to read it from cover to cover but you can find the section pertaining to your needs. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost ten years ago, a friend brought me this book. I have since bought it for several other friends.
The best!.......2007-08-13
This is the most readable and complete book on the subject. It is especially recommended for anyone dealing with breast cancer. It provides up-to-date info in an understandable manner. Also see the web site.
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005 .......2007-07-14
I bought this book for a good friend of mine who was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The book was suggested to me by my mother who just underwent a double mastectomy. My friend is very thankful for this book. She told me it has helped tremendously with questions she has about her condition and treatment options.
So while I haven't personally read this book, I would defiantly recommend it to anyone who has the tragedy of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Essential Reading for All Women.......2007-09-20
Women at every stage of life should read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". No one is too young or too old to read them. The late Dr. Lee had nothing to sell except the important information in the books. Of course everyone is an individual; naturally every statement won't apply to one and all, and that is OK. The books obviously are not a substitute for competent medical care; however, you make the best decisions when you have the most information. Incidentally, you may meet some people who have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books and will say they advise women never use estrogen in any form. He strongly advised against the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone. These are not bio-identical and have been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee had said beforehand. Dr. Lee's outstanding contribution was in helping us understand the uses and benefits of natural progesterone cream, offering information you may not hear from your doctor ... this natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter. Unlike the synthetic prescribed forms, this cream has the same chemistry as that made by the body. It is derived from plants and is used transdermally for most effective results. It is a wonderful supplement for many women with many benefits but the key is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone. Bone is automatically lost during the menopausal years and the progesterone was well-proven by Dr. Lee to work by his carefully documented studies over many years. Also excellent are the book "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and the book "Smart Medicine for Menopause" and any other book by Sandra Cabot, M.D. Here's to good health and competent advice!
a must-have book!.......2007-09-16
I read the precursor to this book a few (OK, more) years ago - What Your Doctor May not Tell You About Premenopause - and it was absolutely wonderful. So I bought this book, and was not disappointed! The information and timely advice has changed the way I feel. Following it has given me new energy and brought my body (and life) back into balance. If you (or someone you love) is at, or preparing for, this stage of life, it's a must-read!
I learned a lot........2007-07-23
Fabulous book that I told my nurse practictioner about. Made sense to me. This book really explained the hormonal changes besides estrogen and causes of many of my symptoms. Worth the price.
Read if you are female (any age) or know someone who is........2007-04-19
As a man who cares deeply about his woman, I have an eye for other men who genuinely care for the well-being of women. That trait is evident in the author of this great book, and is my best reason for recommending it.
Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.

Customer Reviews:
Only For Early Stage Cancer.......2007-08-22
This book constatnly refers to the good results now achieved for stage I and II breast cancers. The author never even mentions later stage cancers. I was diagnosed at stage III and read most of it thinking, "What about me? Am I doomed?" I'm not doomed, but I would only recommend this book for women with early stage breast cancer.
Helped me keep my sanity during an insane time.......2007-06-24
Survior! Had my lumpectomy surgery 11-30-06.I Love this book. It helped me in so many ways, from being able to laugh to being able to cry. Ms Cohen's upfront and honest insight on what goes on during the breast cancer treatment process was tremendously helpful.
It helped me to make lists of questions for my doctors, to being able to get through some of those really bad days. This book helped me keep my sanity during a true time of insanity in my life. BUY IT for yourself, or buy it for a friend who has been diagnosed.
Great Book!.......2007-05-29
This is a very thoughtful and well put together book. It is written so that you can actually understand what's going on, without the technical jargon.
A wonderful book!.......2007-04-03
Bought this for a dear friend who is battling cancer right now. So very, very often, she refers to it and says how helpful are the more practical, "in the trenches" insights offered. This is not a technical medical book, but more like a converstaion with a knowledgeable friend who has "been there."
Great resource.......2007-01-10
This book is a great resource. Being confronted with a cancer diagnosis is always an unwelcome surprise. In my case, it was my sister who was diagnosed and I found this book invaluable in helping me pick my "battles" as far as stressing to her what was really important in terms of her self care and at what points she really needed to call the doctor. She had a lot of denial about even being sick, so having lists that give specifics (i.e., temperature above 100.8) of when to call the doctor helped a lot. For you or I, an elevated temp is merely an inconvenience, but for a cancer patient on chemo, it is something you can't ignore. There are also other lists of things you just wouldn't think to have ready "just in case" that were very helpful. I highly recommend this book for anyone going through this.

A must for your bookshelf.......2006-03-31
If you sign out breast biopsies, then you really must own Rosen's Breast Pathology AND this small altas. It's now in it's second edition and is meant to be used in conjuction with the larger textbook. The writing, as with all of Rosen's material, is clear, and the pictures range from good to excellent. No real drawbacks, and it's a book that will be used very often in any busy practice.

Another WHO book.......2004-01-23
World Health Organization: Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs (edited by Fattaneh A. Tavassoli and Peter Devilee) is the 4th in the Pathology and Genetics of Tumours series from the WHO. With an impressive set of multidisciplinary contributors from several continents, this book improves on previous books from that organization by representing a reasonable attempt towards consensus in their presentation of the various topics. The main strength of this book, as with others in the series, is that they are concise and emphasize the most salient points in each topic. While it is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of the various tumors, essential definitions, clinical findings, morphologic points, immunophenotypic variations and molecular and/or cytogenetic pathogenesis are well presented. This book does not resolve some of the more controversial issues in these fields (such as the prognostic significance of micropapillary patterns in ovarian serous borderline tumors or terminologic issues in intraductal breast proliferations), but at least provides another framework for further discussion. The illustrations are excellent and the text is well-supplemented with tables. Overall, I would recommend this book to trainees and practitioners alike
Book Description
Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.
Customer Reviews:
courageous souls-Do we plan our life challanges before birth?.......2007-10-15
This book is FANTASTIC!
Everyone has a story and has things going on in their life. This book makes everything that happens to you make sense. It allows you to understand why you have ended up where you are in life. Why you have chosen certain paths. And allows you to understand and be at peace with other peoples choices and the way they live their life.
I just loved it.Everyone should have a copy.It is well written, easy to understand and informative. But above all..it just makes sense. And things seem alot more clear to me than they did before I read the book.I loved it.For anyone who needs alittle hope or clarity in their lives..read this book.
Slow read.......2007-10-12
This book has some interesting ideas but it is a slow read. Not too sure if I would recommend.
Karma is more than payback.......2007-10-11
This book really changed my perspective on my current life situation. I was quite negative about the situation I'm dealing with, feeling it was just the result of past lives in which I had incurred very bad karma and I would just have to live through it. But, after reading this book, I believe I am living this life because of contracts I made in the pre-birth planning. That changes everything for me - if I agreed to the challenges I'm working with because I wanted to help one I love, there can be no resentment, just gratitude for being able to help, and love for the one I'm struggling with. Thank you, Robert Schwartz, what a gift!
So that's why . . ........2007-10-08
If you ever want to get into the backside of your pre-birth planning of your life challenges, read Courageous Souls by Robert Schwartz. Want to know why you attract illness, accidents, birth defects? Want to know why you chose a life of alcoholism or drug addiction, or are around someone who has? Read this book. The stories, while may start out slow at first, are powerful and insightful. Just stick with them. Robert uses mediums who are able to access multiple guides at one time, and your primary guide and listen in on conversations between you and your soul group.
not credible.......2007-09-30
I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.

The only constants in nature are change and death. Terry Tempest Williams, a naturalist and writer from northern Utah, has seen her share of both. The pages of Refuge resound with the deaths of her mother and grandmother and other women from cancer, the result of the American government's ongoing nuclear-weapons tests in the nearby Nevada desert. You won't find the episode in the standard history textbooks; the Feds wouldn't admit to conducting the tests until women and men in Utah, Nevada, and northwestern Arizona took the matter to court in the mid-1980s, and by then thousands of Americans had fallen victim to official technology. Parallel to her account of this devastation, Williams describes changes in bird life at the sanctuaries dotting the shores of the Great Salt Lake as water levels rose during the unusually wet early 1980s and threatened the nesting grounds of dozens of species. In this world of shattered eggs and drowned shorebirds, Williams reckons with the meaning of life, alternating despair and joy.
Book Description
In the spring of 1983 Terry Tempest Williams learned that her mother was dying of cancer. That same season, The Great Salt Lake began to rise to record heights, threatening the herons, owls, and snowy egrets that Williams, a poet and naturalist, had come to gauge her life by. One event was nature at its most random, the other a by-product of rogue technology: Terry's mother, and Terry herself, had been exposed to the fallout of atomic bomb tests in the 1950s. As it interweaves these narratives of dying and accommodation,
Refuge transforms tragedy into a document of renewal and spiritual grace, resulting in a work that has become a classic.

Nothing Unnatural About It; It's Sacred.......2006-10-28
The first time I went to Utah, I read Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire" and loved it. This time, at a bookstore in Moab, I picked up Williams' "Red" for a contemporary view of the ecological issues around this gorgeous desert landscape, which is unlike any place I have been. Although I liked "Red," people told me "Refuge" was even better.
This is a very special book. I'm no birdwatcher, but it made me want to be. I'm no scientist, but I wished I were. I'm no Mormon, but it gave me respect for a religion I have never been able to fathom. Terry Tempest Williams has profound insights into the natural world. Her observations of the Great Salt Lake and the many migratory birds that visit it are as moving as her account of the death by cancer of her mother and grandmothers. Not surprisingly, they taught Williams awe of birds and sunsets and their own bodies. All of them are brave and spiritual women, and we would be wise to learn from them.
I think what I most admire about Williams as a writer is her emotional courage. Time and time again, she strikes out where more conventional writers would hesitate. She finds redeeming passages from the Book of Mormon. She follows her mother through her long and circuitous spiritual journey with cancer. She follows her grandmother as she moves into Eastern thought and modern physics. She dips respectfully into ancient Indian and Mexican culture. She walks in the desert at some peril to her well-being. She speaks of the intimacy of her marriage and about her decision not to bear children.
Yet his is not a book "about" the desert or cancer or birds or Mormonism, but about life and how it can be richly observed, experienced. shared and redeemed. It's one brave woman's answer to "Desert Solitaire."
This verse unlocks the heart........2006-10-16
Terry Tempest Williams is a national treasure. Her unvarnished verse carries one deep into the mystery of the Earth and sends us helplessly into the depths of our own hearts. The landscape of wildness breaths a spectacular wisdom under the watchful eyes of this keen observer of wind, rock, desert, sky, sage, along with the birds who soar and dance and play in a benediction to non-sentient life.
When I need to recapture my own mortality along with my own humility, I always return to the verse of this elder of silence and truth. Williams stands alone in the power to convey both outer and inner wildness. Her verse is poetic and healing. One does not read these words but are instead initiated into the heart beat of wild nature. Savor its beauty as you might a calming sunset or a wind swept sea shore calling you ever deeper into your own soul.
Read everything she writes and find peace deep within.
If you have been affected by cancer it is worth reading!!!.......2006-06-26
I loved and hated this book. It is beatifully written. I found the author frustrating at times. Some parts got a little long winded about the birds. It takes you on a emotional rollercoaster but the pay off of finishing this book is worth it. Any one who has been affected by cancer will find this book very inciteful to the process of going through treatment and also the death process. Terry Tempest gives the most authentic and honest account of what life is like living through cancer I have every read. She put into words thought and feelings I could never express fully.
The research of the history of the Great Salt Lake was very fun to read about. I have lived in Utah all my life, but I have never been to the Lake I now am very curious to see it and the bird refuge. I think I will find the trip much more interesting now than if I had gone before reading this book.
Suprising turn of events.......2006-03-02
Terry Tempest Williams is a naturalist living in Utah who has the history of cancer in her family. Cancer in this novel is paralleled with the flooding of the neighboring Great Salt Lake. Overall this book goes to show that cancer goes deeper than the person who it is diagnosed to. I would suggest this book on limited circumstances: One-if you can get past the strong feminine presence and domination of this novel. Two-do not read the last 60 or so pages. I approved of this book up until that point. If the book ended at that point, leaving out the harassment of the government it would be ten times better. To anyone who is in the process of reading Refuge, you won't want to read past around page 230. Enough said.
My rating(first 230 or so pages): 7.5/10
My rating(after page 230 or so) 2.5/10
Disappointed.......2006-02-03
Although I found the passages about Ms. Williams relationships with her mother and grandmother and their struggles with cancer to be well-written and moving, I am surprised that she and many other reviewers imply that the cancers were the consequences of nuclear testing. I think of myself as an environmentalist, and I believe that such testing is likely to have been harmful to human health; however, the striking family history of breast and ovarian cancer in this case strongly suggests that there is a genetic disorder (mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene) that was responsible for the cancer in these women. I was living in Salt Lake City during the spring of 1983, and the flooding was indeed dramatic, but I was bored by the rather repetitious descriptions of the refuge and the birds.
