Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book has been considered the bible of breast-care books since it appeared in 1990. In 1995, Love completely updated the book in a 600-page second edition, including new biopsy and screening methods, implants, the pros and cons of hormone therapy, new discoveries in breast-cancer treatment, and many other topics. Every chapter has been rewritten, with the exception of the anatomy chapter ("The breast, I'm glad to report, is still located on the chest!"). Love presents copious medical information in a simple, welcoming style, and plentiful illustrations make the information even clearer. About two-thirds of the book deals with breast cancer: risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnosis, staging, emotions, treatment options, surgery, alternative treatments, clinical trials, and more. But the book isn't just about breast cancer. It's also about breast development, physiology, bras, nursing, sexuality--if it has to do with breasts, Love discusses it. Love also debunks breast myths: underwire bras do not cause cancer, neither do bruises or injuries; "fibrocystic disease" isn't really a disease. The book includes a wealth of resources: books, treatment centers, and organizations (but no Web sites--perhaps in the third edition?). --Joan Price
Book Description
Now in a completely updated new edition-the most trusted, most authoritative guide to breast cancer diagnosis and treatment
Recent research is rapidly changing the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of breast cancer. Just as women afflicted with or worried about breast cancer have turned to the earlier editions of Dr. Susan Love's guide for the soundest, most supportive advice, once again they will find all the help they need in this new edition. From guidance on screening techniques and benign disease to comprehensive and heartening advice on living with breast cancer, Dr. Love's book will be a priceless help to recovery on every level, medical, practical, and psychological.
Once again readers will lean with gratitude on the extraordinary empathy and expertise in the book that Newsweek called "One of the most complete and trustworthy books ever published on breast cancer."

An Invaluable Resource for those facing Breast Cancer.......2007-10-14
When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago, this was one of the first resources we found. Dr. Love has dedicated herself to both research, healing and writing about breast cancer. In my mind she has done an admirable job.
This is not an easy read, nor is it always easy to understand what Dr. Love is saying. The book is replete with medical terminology and processes. Yet if one is to beat or even understand breast cancer, this information is indispensable.
We live in the triangle area of North Carolina where there are many excellent cancer resources, yet this book almost always matched the excellent medical advice we got, even when my wife's tumor was so complicated that it required outside expertise from Sloan-Kettering in NY and an expert at Vanderbilt Univ in TN.
Make no mistake, it was tough plowing through the arcane terminology. But my wife's life depended on it. Dr. Love's discussion of the choices a woman must make was both insightful and compassionate and a good ancillary resource in the process we both went through. While I am far from a medical expert, I think this book is the bible of resources on the subject. I could not recommend it more highly.

This is a great book. I purchased this for my aunt and together we have been able to understand what she could expect with each step of surgery and possibe treatment.
The Bible of Breast's Books.......2007-09-06
This is the most complete and readable book on the breast. If you are diagnised with breast cancer, this book is the one to buy. You don't have to read it from cover to cover but you can find the section pertaining to your needs. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost ten years ago, a friend brought me this book. I have since bought it for several other friends.
The best!.......2007-08-13
This is the most readable and complete book on the subject. It is especially recommended for anyone dealing with breast cancer. It provides up-to-date info in an understandable manner. Also see the web site.
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005 .......2007-07-14
I bought this book for a good friend of mine who was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The book was suggested to me by my mother who just underwent a double mastectomy. My friend is very thankful for this book. She told me it has helped tremendously with questions she has about her condition and treatment options.
So while I haven't personally read this book, I would defiantly recommend it to anyone who has the tragedy of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Book Description
The classic bestseller that has helped nearly a million women discover the answer to menopause is now revised and updated. Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, low sex drive, hair loss, fibroids, and osteoporosis-most women will experience these or other hormone- related problems at some point as they age. In clear, easy-to-understand language, an internationally recognized expert explains the benefits of using progesterone and other natural hormones to reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms safely and effectively-without the harmful side effects created by commonly used synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Dr. Lee explains why conventional HRT drugs can be harmful and offers an easy-to-follow non-prescription 'Hormone Balance' program that tells readers how to stay energized, strong, and sexually vigorous during the menopausal years and beyond.

Essential Reading for All Women.......2007-09-20
Women at every stage of life should read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". No one is too young or too old to read them. The late Dr. Lee had nothing to sell except the important information in the books. Of course everyone is an individual; naturally every statement won't apply to one and all, and that is OK. The books obviously are not a substitute for competent medical care; however, you make the best decisions when you have the most information. Incidentally, you may meet some people who have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books and will say they advise women never use estrogen in any form. He strongly advised against the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone. These are not bio-identical and have been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee had said beforehand. Dr. Lee's outstanding contribution was in helping us understand the uses and benefits of natural progesterone cream, offering information you may not hear from your doctor ... this natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter. Unlike the synthetic prescribed forms, this cream has the same chemistry as that made by the body. It is derived from plants and is used transdermally for most effective results. It is a wonderful supplement for many women with many benefits but the key is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone. Bone is automatically lost during the menopausal years and the progesterone was well-proven by Dr. Lee to work by his carefully documented studies over many years. Also excellent are the book "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and the book "Smart Medicine for Menopause" and any other book by Sandra Cabot, M.D. Here's to good health and competent advice!
a must-have book!.......2007-09-16
I read the precursor to this book a few (OK, more) years ago - What Your Doctor May not Tell You About Premenopause - and it was absolutely wonderful. So I bought this book, and was not disappointed! The information and timely advice has changed the way I feel. Following it has given me new energy and brought my body (and life) back into balance. If you (or someone you love) is at, or preparing for, this stage of life, it's a must-read!
I learned a lot........2007-07-23
Fabulous book that I told my nurse practictioner about. Made sense to me. This book really explained the hormonal changes besides estrogen and causes of many of my symptoms. Worth the price.
Read if you are female (any age) or know someone who is........2007-04-19
As a man who cares deeply about his woman, I have an eye for other men who genuinely care for the well-being of women. That trait is evident in the author of this great book, and is my best reason for recommending it.
Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.

Amazing Nutritional Book.......2007-10-03
Amazing , must read book!!!!! I am using the book in my Integrative Practice everyday!
"Beating Cancer with Nutrition" review.......2007-09-10
I thought the book would have more straight ahead recipes in it that I could follow, but overall it was educational.
So-so.......2007-09-10
I flip through this book every so often when someone asks me for cancer health tips. Although it's an easy read and has bountiful information, I do feel it may provide unrealistic hopes to cancer patients. However, keep in mind that you can never go wrong with a healthy patient.
I am a huge supportive of carrot juice! Drink up (cancer or not)!
Undoubtably the best cancer book ever.......2007-07-14
This book is unbelieveable.I am a naturopath. This book outlines, comprehensively and in well referenced form, exactly what one should do from a holistic and balanced approach. The book is easy to follow and very practical in it's application. If all people with cancer followed the principles in the book, far more people would beat this modern plague.
It's selling well because of its title.......2007-07-07
The book at times is laid out in such a consumer unfriendly manner as the label on Dr. Bronner's soap bottles. Confusing little boxes, obscure charts, a highly incomplete index. The writing style is a bit pedestrian, too. There is some fine information, but also much that is irrelevant. And as several other reviewers here have noted, you wind up wondering at times whether all of the author's arguments are objective views based on good science or the rantings of a man obsessively beating his own drum. Still, this tome can be helpful if bought with an additional text.

Book Description
The connection between inflammation and heart disease, arthritis, and other chronic ailments has become increasingly clear. Many food allergies and poor dietary choices over stimulate the immune system and cause inflammatory responses that erode the body’s wellness and pave the path for ill health. Based on her naturopathic practice, Jessica Black has devised a complete program for how to eat and cook to minimize and even prevent inflammation and its consequences. The first part of the book explains the benefits of the anti-inflammatory diet with an accessible discussion of the science behind it. The second half contains 108 recipes. The author offers many substitution suggestions and includes a healthy ingredient tip with each recipe. Most of the dishes can be prepared quickly and easily by even novice cooks. A week of sample menus for summer months and another for winter are included, as well as a substitutions chart, allowing readers to modify their favorite recipes to increase their healing potential.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent, health-promoting guide .......2007-08-04
Naturopathic physician Jessica K. Black presents The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book, a guide offering 125 recipes, lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid, and a full week of sample menus for summer and winter months. Written especially for individuals attempting to follow an anti-inflammatory diet who have trouble finding recipes to use, The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book offers entrees, breakfasts, salads, soups, and desserts that exclude common allergens and inflammation-aggravators such as fried foods, foods with hydrogenated oils, peanuts and peanut products, alcohol, juice, caffeinated teas and sodas, potatoes, tomatoes, wheat products, corn, sugar, pork, citrus fruits and more. Chapters also recommend foods that should be prominently featured in an anti-inflammation diet, such as pineapple (due to its content of bromelain), most fruits and vegetables, garlic, ginger, tumeric, flaxseed oil, and others. An excellent, health-promoting guide especially recommended for anyone coping with arthritis or other inflammatory illnesses.
Buy this book!.......2007-05-30
One of the most difficult challenges I have faced when suggesting to my patients on dietary modifications is offering patients alternatives to their inflammatory menus. Not only has Dr. Black provided easy to prepare and tasty recipes, but the ingredients serve their purpose: they favor pathways that decrease inflammation. Hence patients with intensely inflammatory conditions, such as rhumatoid arthritis, have been able to experience relief, thanks to this cookbook. It offers recipes that appeal to kids and provides ample educational material for patients to resource. It is the ideal cookbook for all.
A Wonderful Resource .......2007-05-19
This book has been a powerful resource in my practice for many years dating back to its original self-published version. I have found that foremost in the process of restoring a persons health is inflammatory reduction. It is this inflammation which often initiates and propogates a disease process that eventually creates pathology. Dr. Black's book is an essential tool for implementing my recommended dietary changes on a practical level. It is full of helpful educational material and ripe with a multitude of savory and delicious recipes. This book will give you all the necessary information to begin a positive lifestyle change which you can then apply to your own cullinary creations. For those people looking to restore health naturally, Dr. Black's book will not disappoint.
My patients LOVE this Book!.......2007-05-18
One of the most difficult aspects of nutritional counseling is helping people make dietary changes. This book makes these transitions much easier by providing reasons for reducing inflammation in the body, nutritional facts about common foods which may cause inflammation --and best of all--tasty recipes and helpful hints.
My patients LOVE this book and it has become an important part of the dietary portion of my "Simple Steps to Wellness" programs.
Dr. Karen Benton, Naturopathic Physician
Great Resource!!.......2007-05-18
I have been using the dietary recommendations outlined in Dr. Black's book for a number of years with my patients. It is so helpful to have a comprehensive cookbook that explains why people should eat this way and how they should do it! It really has made dietary changes less overwhelming for people that may have been intimidated to make big shifts in the way that they eat. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in addressing their health concerns from a foundational level.

Prostate Book - Scardino.......2007-07-12

This is the most comprehensive and understandable review of prostate issues I have read. With the information in Dr. Scardino's book, any man will be able to ask more pertinent questions and participate more knowledgeably in the therapy and treatment of prostate problems.
A Complete Guide?.......2007-04-18
This book contains a very small amount of information on Prostatitis and BPH, and I mean very small. To call it a complete guide is, well.... a lie.

Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.
Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.
Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.
The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included.

Excellent Must Have read for women!.......2005-11-18
I found Susan Weed after suffering for over 6 painful months with a very painful breast cyst and took painkillers that didn't help me at all and after trying the hot Ginger Compresses for less than a week I was able to get off of the useless painkillers and get back to a normal life again! I am so thankful to this book for making me feel better. I liked the book so much I became a student of Susan's.
A woman's breast health is her life and I thank you personally Susan for making me feel so much better. Truely a gift for sharing with others!
One of the Best Books on the Market!.......2002-11-13
Whether you or perhaps a friend or family member have had breast cancer, or you are a woman, period, this is a book you should have in your personal library. Author Susun Weed brings you every step of the way in breast health, which modern medicines and practitioners tend to either ignore or not explore.
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way is the first step to wellness and staying healthy. Author Susun Weed has certainly done her homework, with research and a natural lifestyle. She begins with a small personal story and the awakening from it, which leads to the disclosure of her anti-cancer lifestyle, a one page insight of balance and harmony, then ends this section with a how-to on using this book, about herbs and their dangers.
She begins her chapters with the statistics of breast cancer and how they make her feel, how it makes us all feel. She leaves nothing out with her research with complete scientific data and what is accepted in the medical society and what may be likely but not proven. She explores every angle in a not so easy subject.
Moving on to "Can Foods Prevent Cancer?" Again she has done her homework and provided a wealth of information on anti cancer foods, she explores foods, herbs, oils, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. In "Taking Our Breasts into Our Own Hands, Breast Self Massage", Ms. Weed goes far beyond just the how-to that we so often get from our Doctors and clinics, thoroughly discussing the many aspects of self-breast exam, including an extensive list and uses of different oils.
As you make your way to the following chapters, you begin to expect much more from her. This is exactly what she gives you! With "Building Powerful Immunity, Journey to the Wise Healer Within", " Mammograms -Who Needs Them?" and the last of the first Section "There's a Lump in my Breast!", she brings you completely full circle as she delves into each of these subjects.
Section two has some of the scariest of topics, but the author gently eases your anxiety as if she is right beside you holding your hand, letting you know you are not alone by exploring every aspect of having Breast Cancer. From "What is Breast Cancer? The Diagnosis", dealing with your emotional state, to "Choosing Surgery Questions to Ask," the topics just continue to flow to give you a complete in-depth exploration, with recipes, suggestions and what to expect no matter what you decide. She gives you extensive resource lists on just about every topic. This book is not a get healed fast pill, but instead an exploratory journey, on one of the most feared and extended taboo subjects in our time. Through it all Susun reminds you; this is Your Life, take control!
Hail to Susun Weed who has brought the light in an age of darkness with this book! Every Clinic, Gynecologist and Oncologist worth their weight should read, then recommend "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," to all their patients. I give this wonderful archive of information my highest of recommendations!

An empowering, well-researched book........2000-07-18
Finally a book that gives women practical direction on how to facilitate breast health and how to deal with suspicious lumps. The medical community offers us mammograms and biopsies, but the gaps between these procedures are often filled with agonizing uncertainty for most women. Thank you Ms. Weed, for giving us the information we have so desperately needed to be able channel our energies into strengthening our bodies and empowering our spirits.
a misguided approach to a serious disease with mistatements.......1999-10-13
There may be some useful information in this book but her statements about mammograms pushing cancer cells into other parts of the body have no validity and no scientific proof. She is promoting some dangerous thinking that ignores the advances that have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Do not let this be the only book you read on the subject!
This book is a must read for women and girls!.......1999-04-17
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way by Susun Weed is a significant contribution to the state of women's health. She has woven statistics, research results, myths and facts into a fabric that is warm and inviting. Her style of injecting motherly and grandmotherly wisdom while sharing facts is very effective. She certainly helped me to accept that breast health is important and more than correct brassiere fitting. I received the book from a friend a few days after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I curled up with the book and read for hours, absorbing the spiritual soothing of the letters from the "grandmothers". I was challenged to rethink what I had already experienced and where I should step next. For instance had I read Weed's book prior to the diagnostic tests, I would not have submitted to a mammogram, clearly less than six months after a previous one. I would have requested an ultrasound, since the fact of the lump had already been established. The book encouraged me to slow down and think about optons and my direction. It made me know that I was not foolish in thinking that I could choose a way that would enhance my natural healing capacities rather than compromise them. It has been invaluable as a resource during my journey. The cancer-free lifestyle outline was formidable and empowering. The levels and types of breast cancer that Weed explained equipped me to understand pathology reports and information given in consultations with surgeons and oncologists. I realized gaps in nutritional information, since I was not aware of the many cancer-fighting foods and enzymes. The book encouraged me to reassess my eating habits and to become more serious about my diet. Weed also very ably handles the existing options for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although she is very clearly a proponent of holistic approaches to healing, she makes the women who would choose the conventional approaches know that their decisions are personal and to be respected. There is no intense politicizing of the issues such that women will feel ashamed or less than courageous if they select the usually recommended course of treatment. She is an advocate for wise behavior on the part of women. Weed has achieved an important goal by writing a book that is womanish, informative, challenging and timely. I agree with her concern that in the next century people will look back and consider our conventional way of treating breast cancer to be barbaric.

Book Description
“What happens when a shoe-crazy, lipstick-obsessed, wine-swilling, pasta-slurping, fashion-fanatic, single-forever, about-to-get-married big-city girl cartoonist with a fabulous life finds . . . a lump in her breast?” That’s the question that sets this powerful, funny, and poignant graphic memoir in motion. In vivid color and with a taboo-breaking sense of humor, Marisa Acocella Marchetto tells the story of her eleven-month, ultimately triumphant bout with breast cancer—from diagnosis to cure, and every challenging step in between.
But Cancer Vixen is about more than surviving an illness. It is a portrait of one woman’s supercharged life in Manhattan, and a wonderful love story. Marisa, self-described “terminal bachelorette,” meets her Prince Charming in Silvano, owner of the chic downtown restaurant Da Silvano. Three weeks before their wedding, she receives her diagnosis. She wonders: How will he react to this news? How will my world change? Will I even survive? And . . . what about my hair?
From raucous New Yorker staff lunches and the star-studded crowd at Silvano’s restaurant to the rainbow pumps Marisa wears to chemotherapy, Cancer Vixen is a total original. Marisa’s wit and courage are an inspiration—she’s a cancer vixen, not its victim.
Customer Reviews:
Great fun during chemo.......2007-08-23
Being someone who is currently "surviving" breast cancer and chemo, I loved reading this tale from a survivor. The book is serious, moving, laugh-out-loud funny, and even instructive. I especially enjoyed the unusual genre: cartoon. It was a creative and engaging way to hear a story of one woman's encounter with cancer. I recommend it as a great reprieve from all the purely-informative books I've been given. Many thanks to the author for her efforts!
Fantastic!.......2007-08-06
In this book Marchetto recounts her experiences with breast cancer in a unique way, through the art of cartoons. It is simply amazing to see how she manages to accurately capture that which a breast cancer patient/survivor has to deal with and looks back at her own ordeal with humor and in my eyes much strength. As a survivor myself, I found her book uplifting and comforting, as well as very recognizeable. I would recommend it for all surivvors at any stage of their treatment.
I loved this book.......2007-07-11
Considering that 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, this disease will touch all of us in some way. This book addresses the topic with both gravity and humor, and makes it very accessible. Whether or not you relate to the specifics of Marisa's life (chic NY setting, super-cool fiance), most women will be able to relate to her struggles: the fear of facing mortality, insecurities in relationships, body image problems, evolving self-concept, etc. When Marisa has to say "goodbye" to the children she will never have, I sobbed for a solid 15 minutes. Thank you, Marisa, for sharing your story in a very real and endearing way.
Brilliant.......2007-06-08
I love New Yorker cartoons. I hate comic books. I LOVED Cancer Vixen. I've been through a terrible illness and I have friends and family who have been through cancer, chemo, and radiation. This is an excellent story of one person's experience. It's the best literature I've ever read about the cancer/chemo experience because it shows what it's all about and how it effects the patient's life and family. I could really relate! I'm a writer, but no purely written story could have had the same impact and wisdom as this beatuiful, visual story. And the writing is witty and spot on too. Marisa is a brilliant cartoonist. She was actually very brave to tell her story as she did. I wish her happiness and health!
If you are tired of pink schmaltz and need some edginess w/ your BC .......2007-05-17
I bought this book and while I have still only read parts and skimmed others, it was a refreshing change from your typical BC book. It is not for the easily offended, but if you have a dark sense of humor, and need a break from the relentless cheeriness/despair of BC, this is it. I definately laughed out loud - something I needed after a DX of Stage 3C. I probably should give it more than 3 stars...

Book Description
When I wrote my first novel, The Christmas Box, I never imagined it would become an international bestseller. It was a story for my two (then) little girls. But as I wrote, I realized that it was also for my mother -- to ease her pain over losing a child.
My mother was my staunchest supporter and my biggest fan. A receptionist at a doctor's office, she would sell my book (sometimes by the case!) to patients in the waiting room. When The Christmas Box hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, no one, including me, was more excited than my mother.
I lost my mother on Valentine's Day of 2006. After weeks of struggling with my grief, I decided I would write a story for her. As she loved Christmas, I chose to write a Christmas novel, my first since The Christmas Box.
Finding Noel is about how people come into our lives for a reason. It is a love story about Macy and Mark, two young people from different worlds.
I'm sorry that this Christmas, for the first time since I became a writer, I won't be able to present my mother with a copy of my book. I think she would have enjoyed reading it. But, then again, I'm not certain that she hasn't.
As you read Finding Noel, I hope that you enjoy the journey and feel the same powerful emotions I felt as the story came to me.
Fondly,
Richard Evans

Love finds a way.......2007-08-25
This is a story about what the adoption/foster care system can do and does to children. BUT it is also a story about the resilience of children and how they cope as they grow up.
Mark Smart is at the lowest point in his life when car failure and a snowy night bring him into a diner and Macy Woods into his life. Macy changes Mark's depression into a willingness to go on and the two begin a relationship.
Mark discovers that Macy is known as Mary at the diner where she works. He wonders why and discovers that her life was not all roses as a child. A Christmas ornament with Noel is all Macy has left of her birth family. She was adopted by parents that didn't really want her, she was separated from her sister who was sent to another set of adoptive parents and when she tries to find her now that she is an adult, discovers that the adoption is sealed. Macy is now living with a woman who is loving and kind but has a secret of her own.
Mark's own life has had its own turmoil. He was in college in Utah but had to drop out for lack of money. He started to work to put money aside so he could return but during this time his mother died and his family in Alabama wasn't able to find him until 2 days after the funeral. Mark and his father didn't get along very well and he doesn't want to have any contact with him.
Mark and Macy each help the other to come to terms with their pasts so they can move forward with the present. It is a story that you will want to read from beginning to end without stopping.
The Real Story.......2007-08-18
The irony of fictional writing is that it works best when it comes from a real place. According to author Richard Evans, the background story of his novel "Finding Noel," is drawn from the real-life story of Celeste Edmunds, a woman with whom he used to work.
As with his previous books, this is a personal work for Evans; he uses family names, origins, religion, illness and little slice-of-life things like recipes, traditions and tips to give a homey feel to his characters and story.
His writing, though, has a stilted, rookie feel to it which is surprising given that this is his 10th or so published work and was edited and published by Simon and Schuster. Evans uses lots of adverb modifiers in his dialogue when a simple "said" would work. That redundancy (Ex: ` "That's real genius," I said sarcastically.' The character's tone already communicates the sarcasm), slows down the pace and dumbs down the scene.
That awkwardness, plus the common voice between the characters, gives this story a generic feel.
What Evans does extremely well is to tell an unusual story about finding love in unexpected places. "Finding Noel" is also the first book of fiction that features a character living with and dying from eye cancer. Through his character Joette, Evans exposes millions of readers to this rare disease - only 2,000 adults are diagnosed each year - in a way that mainstream media and inaccessible medical literature have not. For that alone, Richard Evans and his fictional work are the real deal.
Finding Noel.......2007-07-21
All of Richard Paul Evans books are good. I have all of his books.
Finding Noel.......2007-05-14
Finding Noel: A NovelMy wife believes Richard Paul Evans "walks on water" and gives this book 10 stars. Her daughter also rates it a "10". Any book by Mr. Evans is an easy, quick read and thoughly enjoyable. Kick back, relax and enjoy a good read. Buy several copies---the book makes a great gift and you will be loved for giving such a great gift.
Very sad narrative.......2007-04-11
Well written, a story more people should know about.
It does make you sad though.
Gives insight into adoption and the agency's that handle them.
