Customer Reviews:
Give in to nostalgia.......2007-04-02
Even though some of the message seems a little outdated (really, in this day and age--the "girls can do anything, boys can play with dolls" message seemes almost silly), this is a great book. My kids love the CD so the book is a nice complement to it. Educational but fun for them!
Better for today's kids than the video.......2007-01-05
The kids of today, 2007, don't know who Rosie Greer is. Buy this for them and they can have fun reading the stories, especially the dialogues with the babies.
Great to share with my own kids.......2006-09-08
I also grew up listening to this music. I bought it for my son and he absolutely loves the silly poems and the upbeat music. I hope my baby girl enjoys it as well. As a female stockbroker who scaled back to 2 days per week in order to spend more time with my kids, I think this is a fabulous collection of songs and stories to make you think outside the box. I know it encouraged me to be strong and stick by what I want to be when I grow up- somedays I wear dresses that show off my knees and other days I wear trousers twice as long (or sweat pants!). As for the poor reviewer who said it robbed her of her femininity- I really don't understand how that's possible. The whole point of the book is to encourage individuality and inner strength to be true to yourself. Cry when you're sad. Be what you want to be. Love everyone as they are. Sounds good to me.
Entertaining, Well-written and Still Relevent.......2006-01-03
I grew up with this book and album. I still know many of the songs and stories by heart.
The lessons in this book helped give me a confidence and attitude that my mom couldn't give me, being raised in the 50's with strict gender roles.
As for the reviewer who says this book robbed her of being dinstinctly feminine, I suspect there are other issues at play there. This book does not promote androgeny, but individuality and discourages typecasting based on gender. I am still distinctly feminine, I wear dresses and makeup and heels. But I don't think that because I enjoy looking like a woman, I should be treated as a lesser class. This book helped me to understand the difference.
Free To Be You And Me book and cd.......2005-10-25
My kids love this book and cd as much as I used to love the book and record at their age. The songs and poems speak candidly about growing up and what they may face as far as selfishness, gender identification, confidence, peer pressure, believing what commercials on tv say. Lots of actor's voices you will recognize, catchy tunes that stay with you for the day. There are even poems written by Judy Blume and sheet music to some of the songs. My children think it is fun to follow along with the book and cd together.

Originally published in 1974, this spectacular collection of stories, songs, poems, and illustrations is packed with enough inspiration to span several generations. But be warned--if you are revisiting the delights held within these fuchsia covers, you may find it difficult to contain your glee. Recalling songs like "It's All Right to Cry" (sung by football star Rosie Greer on the original album), "Parents Are People," and of course, the titular "Free to Be... You and Me," may inspire irrepressible crooning.
This wondrous collection was created by Marlo Thomas and contains introductions by Gloria Steinem and Letty Cottin Pogrebin, stories and poems by Shel Silverstein, Judy Blume, Carl Reiner, Charlotte Zolotow, and Judith Viorst, among others, and an afterward by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. With such stellar contributors, it's not surprising that Free to Be... You and Me has won critical acclaim since its publication. The Los Angeles Times notes that it "challenged racial, sexist, and economic stereotypes for children ... became a beloved national bestseller--and made it okay for boys to have dolls and girls to be good at sports." The Washington Post has called it "an immensely diverse and imaginatively arranged collection," while the New York Times Book Review deemed it "a positive, refreshing book for children and adults that tells you not who you should be ... but who you can be." Indeed, the concepts espoused by this book go beyond what is glibly referred to as "politically correct," and offer a simple, hopeful vision for humanity.
This reissue will appeal to people of all ages--those who remember reading it to their children and grandchildren in the 1970s, those who have fond memories of growing up with this book close at hand, and those who are exploring its illuminating content for the first time. Enjoy, one and all.

Brings back fond memories.......2003-05-01
This book brings back fond memories of when I first heard these songs/stories back in grade school. I really think they are wonderful, motivating stories and songs that truly inspire children. I had to get it for my first baby so he can also experience the magic.
Free to be...still fills me with happiness,and I'm 30!!.......1999-10-20
I first heard of FTBY&M in 5th grade(1979) the whole school watched it in assembly. I loved it-all the stories and most of all the music. It touched me like nothing I had seen or heard before. The title song had our whole school singing for days! Years later i just happened to come across the book in our library, and WOW! all those memories came rushing back!! THEN, two years ago, i was given the soundtrack to FTBY&M, and I have not stopped singing since. The music and stories got me thru a serious illness and a horrible breakup= and when I one day have kids of my own, I will pass the legacy on!!!!!
Buy this one for you and your children.......1999-09-01
I grew up in the late '70s playing the record of "Free to Be you and Me" over and over. My mom actually had to buy me a second copy because I lost the song book and couldn't live without it. I still sing "When We Grow Up" and "It's Allright To Cry" in the shower and to my nephews. Now I share the wisdom of Atalanta and William's Doll with the teenage mothers I teach. While it doesn't take a genius to figure out the songs on the record were recorded in the '70s, they are timeless treasures for all of our children. Buy this book and the CD for the important children in your life. You'll never be sorry!
I LOVE IT!.......1999-08-06
I love Free to Be...You and Me probably because I am currently in the play. I actually have a preformance tonight! I love this book and its a Great Show!!! I actually never heard of it until I started the show. The great songs like "Glad to have a friend like you", "Something For Everyone", "Brothers and sisters", 'Free To be you and me" and "Free to be a family" are all spectacular!!!!!!!! Of course every song is great !!!!!!! The stories like "Boy meets Girl", "ladies First", "The Kingdom with no rules or Laws" are all such good stories especially "The Kingdom with no Rules or laws" thats my favortie because in the show i play the mother in that story. I love this book and play b/c its about kids and I'm a kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is the way the world should be........1999-05-15
I loved this song book and the CD - a record when I was growing up- so much. Now when my friends started having children I knew that I had to give their children the same experience but I couldn't find it anywhere until I found amazon.com! I think it made me realize as a little girl that I could be anything I wanted to be. Now I am a lawyer and happily married and continue to feel free to be me!

Worthwhile Read.......2006-06-10
Just got off a cross-country trip, where I started/finished this week. It's a great "plane book".
In all honesty, wish I had read this some years back at a time when I had a very difficult boss.
It's an easy read with some good, practical suggestions.
There is also a self-assessment component, something I usually dislike, but here I really got into it and found the "results" sometimes surprising (to me).
Even if you don't hate your boss/job, I think it's an interesting read. Also a perfect gift for those friends who are constantly whining about their bosses!
I rate it a 4 out of 5 because, at least for me, it got a bit wordy at the end. If you start skim-reading toward the end, it's a def 5!
Sole Proprietor, Still Dealing with Nonsense!.......2006-06-09
I left the corporate world several years ago to escape drudgery
and daily bickering with employees. Now I hold my client's hands instead of my employees!
Ms. Jansen's no nonsense approach to dealing with difficult individuals really resonates with me. Whether you answer to a Board of Directors, or to Yourself, read this book! She asks you to examine YOUR behavior as well. Bravo Julie!!!!
Keep your sense of humor, remain optimistic, breathe & get this book for your or your company's library!!!

You Want Me to Work with Who?.......2006-06-01
I was a big fan of Julie Jansen's after reading her first book, "I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This." In fact, reading that book at an important juncture in my life helped successfully propel me forward to go back to school for my MFA and to reignite my passion for writing. So I just had to read "You Want Me to Work with Who?" when it came out. There is a real longevity value to this book. It's not trendy or too "today." I think the advice given will apply ten years from now, and I also think it can be applied to a lot of different situations (not just "the office" - in fact, I thought about how helpful this book can be for everything from going back for an MBA or joining the PTO - situations that attract very different personalities!) What I love most about Julie's books are that there is a depth to them. The experience is not just about reading words, but you have the opportunity to do exercises that let you look inside yourself and how the concepts she writes about apply to you and your situations - while giving realistic advice about what to do.
Insightful and fun.......2006-04-21
Julie Jansen gives solid advice on how to get a work life you like. I love her self-assessment exercises - they can help everyone.
Excellent Resource!.......2006-04-03
This is an excellent resource for anyone who is trying to sucessfully navigate the professional environment. The book provides straightforward guidance and handy tips for how to handle those challenging personality types. Wish I had this book years when I started working!

Gluten-Free Girl, with its gluten-free healthful approach, seeks to bring a love of eating back to our diets. Living gluten-free means having to give up traditional bread, beer, pasta, as well as the foods where gluten likes to hide—such as store-bought ice cream, chocolate bars, even nuts that might have been dusted with flour. However, Gluten-Free Girl shows readers how to say yes to the foods they can eat. Written by award-winning blogger Shauna James, who became a interested in food once she was diagnosed with celiac disease and went gluten-free, Gluten-Free Girl is filled with funny accounts of the author’s own life including wholesome, delicious recipes, this book will guide readers to the simple pleasures of real, healthful food. Includes dozens of recipes like salmon with blackberry sauce, sorghum bread, and lemon olive oil cookies as well as resources for those living gluten-free.

good advice.......2006-02-13
This was very helpfull to me in learning what to eat and in simple to understand language. The dietetition I talked to kept
talking in sciencetific language That I did not even understand the food plan she game me. This author made sense to me. I don't eat at fast food places normily, but now I know what I can eat there if I have no other choice. She game me practical advice to navigating the supermarket, and how to get more fiber into my meals. I would recomend thios book to anyone who need a little more down to earth advice.
Is this Homer Simpson's version of diabetic advice?.......2003-09-20
I was absolutely shocked when I read this! I threw it in the garbage!I don't know what kind of diet she has looked at for diabetics but mine doesn't include cafe mocha with chocolate syrup,or cookies with white sugar, brown sugar, and syrup, or donuts! If I followed this book I have no idea what would happen to my blood sugar!my diet does not incorporate the things she says one can eat with diabetes, like 2 big slices of pizza at a meal! Come on now -get real!Ice cream bars? cookies?pizza?donuts? If you want to lower your blood sugar and get off meds forget this book!
what if.......2003-09-14
what if i have more than one problem.
what if i have diabetes, and high bood pressure, and and a colesteral problem.
i need a book to tell me what i can eat if i have all these things.
down to earth explanations for newly-diagnosed diabetics.......2003-02-16
This book has lots of practical, down-to earth explanations of interest to those with newly diagnosed with diabetes or those who cook for for diabetics.
It has hints on how to read nutritional labels, including the various names for "sugar", etc. We had an appointment with a nutritionist, and many things she suggested were mentioned and explained in this book.
The author talks about "drawing the line" on some healthy alternatives: she does not like whole wheat pasta. This, to me, is a realistic attitude. I try to cook as healthy as possible for my diabetic husband, but he just can't get used to one of his favorites, rice pudding, with brown rice. We won't have it very often, but when we do it will be the way he likes it--with white rice.
If you've read this far and are less-than-perfect at planning menus like I am, you might be interested in some simple menu plans for different caloric requirement diabetes diets at this website--this book plus these menus and some recipes from diabetes websites will get you off to a good start. "Mouth-watering recipes"?!.......2002-05-25
If your idea of "mouth-watering recipes that you can't live without" includes ingredients like 1/3 lowfat American processed cheese, lowfat or fat-free cream cheese and sour cream, lowfat frozen french fries, and powdered Ranch dip mix, then I guess this is the diabetic-diet advice book for you. As for me, eating lowfat American cheese is akin to gnawing on a PVC pipe - pure chemicals. And eating fat-free cream cheese is like eating your art gum eraser. I can live without such recipes. Essentially, this book is for people who are used to quickie recipes and fast food chains and want to still eat that way but try to control their blood glucose levels. The popularity of the Joanna Lund style of "cooking" certainly suggests that there are many who cannot give up such things as chocolate cream pie and are willing to accept the substitutes of fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding mix pie topped with Lite Cool Whip. For those who fall into this group, this book has a number of useful tables giving the calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein and salt values for prepackaged common brand name cereals, frozen desserts, cookies, pasta sauces, salad dressings, frozen entrees and frozen pizza. The same breakdowns are also provided for restaurant chain food, such as Denny's, Jack-in-the-Box, Wendy's, MacDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and donut shops. However, if one doesn't eat this way, has type II diabetes and wants to figure out a glucose-controlling diet, this book is worthless. I think this is important to point out because I purchased this book based on the two glowing reviews and am now out the purchase price. Indeed, the book does try to take a postive attitude in telling diabetes what they CAN eat, but the general information can be gotten in much more detail in other books. I would make a recommendation, but I am in the early stages of this research and have not yet found a diabetic diet advice book that I would whole-heartedly recommend for those who avoid processed food. So far, the best has been "The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bible" which did offer some useful recipes, but even that book has menu plans that include frozen entrees, canned fruit cocktail, frozen waffles and margarine.

A must read.......2006-04-07
If you have ever been in relationships that seem unbalanced or that you are feeling like you are the one giving to the relationship, then this book is a must read. The chapters are short and easily understandable. It allows you to take a step back and view your relationships in a different way with a different perspective. This book also provides helpful tools to identify issues in relationships AND how to address them in an appropriate, non-hurtful manner.
It is definitely a book that I will read again and refer to my friends.
