Book Description
Kids will be kids, which, among other things, means that they develop some unhealthy habits, like riding bicycles without a helmet, watching too much TV, or eating too many cookies. And for the most part, as they get older and become responsible adults, kids learn to shed those bad habits that lead to adult diseases like osteoporosis, high cholesterol, and obesity.
The fact of the matter is that unhealthy lifestyle habits that plague us later in life develop from an early age. The good news is that these potentially debilitating conditions and precursors to adult diseases can be prevented or lessened by making some very simple lifestyle adjustments. GOOD KIDS, BAD HABITS provides kids and parents with the means to make a personalized program that will help children grow into the healthiest adults they can be.
A comprehensive "BehaviorRater" test sets the stage for the book, and helps parents target which areas a child should focus on improving, whether it involves cutting down on sugar, getting more exercise, or making the right choices under the duress of peer pressure. Once a basic personalized program is created (which accounts for a child's age, temperament, and other unique factors), readers can use the RealAge® metric to understand how certain healthy habits will benefit the child in later years.
GOOD KIDS, BAD HABITS will help parents encourage their kids to enjoy exercise, eat right, manage stress, and develop healthy intellectual and emotional habit

Common Sense Advice.......2007-09-27
I ordered the book to find the magic solution to my son's (age 6) bad eating habits. My other 3 kids eat anything. The book had very useful advice but no earth shattering solutions - just good common sense. I enjoyed reading the book and was glad I did, but it did not help. It did reinforce many things were were already doing as a family. It was a good check up.
What's new.......2007-05-09
I eagerly ordered Good Kids, Bad Habits, hoping for new insights and parenting tips. The first problem was that my children are 12, 14 & 17 years old, and the book's advice targeted parents with much younger children. Unfortunaltely some of us with teens and preteens have still not figured out how best to shepard our children into the healthest possible lifestyles, given our modern culture.
I read the book anyway, and was struck with the thought that very few of the suggestions presented by the author were new or original. Many of the main stream suggestions have been in parents' magazine articles for decades. The title and cover of the book were the most creative and original part of the package.
The author is a pediatrician, yet little or no science graced the pages.
Of course I was not been able to bring myself to toss the book in the recycle bin. So I have donated the paperback to the local library. A 5 minute scan of the text at the library, should provide you with all its insights.
No Picnic.......2007-04-10
I have read part of this book. It is work, no easy answers. You have to evaluate, evaluate, evaluate.... I have started with one child, but then the next question is about another child. I'll work it out. But you have to do the work.
The BEST book I have ever read.......2007-04-04
This book is the very best one I have ever read on kids and nutrition!
LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-03-08
What a fantastic book! Useful advice given in a practical and non-judgemental way. Dr. Jen provides a fantastic road map for helping to put your child on the path of a healthy life both physically & mentally. As the Mom of a 9-year old son, I really appreciated her advice on parenting children during the 'tween years and thoughts on self-esteem.
Book Description
No one's children are well behaved all the time. While it may be a thankless task, being a good parent involves knowing how and when to administer discipline. Yet the majority of books on the subject merely apply band-aids to specific problems, failing to provide readers with an overarching philosophy on discipline that will see them through any situation. The Discipline Miracle presents a comprehensive approach centered around three fundamental principles: * Be a safe harbor. Give the child a sense of security by being dependable, responsive, and emotionally available. * Be a good boss. Insist on appropriate rules that will make children feel safe, and teach them to use self-control. * Prepare kids for the real world. Give them what they need (boundaries, rules, and consequences), not just what they want. The Discipline Miracle will help readers be the best parents they can be -- and raise the best kids. Used consistently, these principles can make the difference between momentary lapses in behavior and continuous problems that can affect children throughout their lives. The Discipline Miracle provides a unique framework for raising happy, well-adjusted children, and is an essential addition to the bookshelf of every parent.

Caution.......2007-10-12
Author Linda Pearson wrote a dissertation favorable to a fringe psychotherapy called "Attachment Therapy"-- a high confrontation, close-physical contact practice that still promotes the old, out-dated notion of catharsis. Attachment Therapy is associated with a brutal, and highly controlling parenting method that demonizes children they give the bogus diagnosis of "Attachment Disordered."
To my knowledge, Pearson has never denounced Attachment Therapy/Parenting. But the American Psychological Association's Division on Child Maltreatment has. They recommend these practices be investigated as "suspected child abuse."
With this background, it would be particularly important for readers to look closely at this "miracle" book's claim to promote a "clinically proven system" of parenting.
Phony reviews? Duh...........2007-08-28
What's up with all these 5-star reviews written on the same day by people who have only reviewed this book? Something smells.
Not for us........2007-07-24
After the author told me to withhold affection when my child misbehaved, I lost interest and faith in where this book was going. This just wasn't for us.
I liked it........2007-01-10
This is my first go round with a toddler and hubby & I have been at a loss on how to handle meltdowns. This book has helped. I now feel more in control when she has her meltdowns. We have been able to lower the number of meltdowns and I feel we are connecting better.
worth the read.......2006-11-07
The Discipline Miracle offered a unique perspective on basic principles to help gain control of my two-year-olds behavior. It helped me to understand her emotional reactions and how I should best respond to them.
For less than $15, I was totally satisfied and had a renewed sense of self.
Book Description
Childhood is a pivotal time for good nutrition. Organs and blood streams nurtured with junk food cannot build a foundation for good health and longevity as an adult. Drs. Joseph Mercola and Ben Lerner believe profound inactivity, addiction to electronic media, and diets of super-sized fast food and sugar-laden beverages have created a national emergency.
Generation XL is a clarion call and a detailed guide to giving your child a vibrant, successful future and a healthy, wholesome, invigorating youth.
As children riddled with pain, illness, learning disorders, and even depression begin to show up everywhere, rather than looking at brain development, nutrition, and lack of movement as the culprits, concerned parents are turning to more and more medications. Think about that. Is that how we were designed? To make medication a way of life and to be drugged early on a consistent basis?
What does the future hold for us when kids are overweight, out of shape, and taking medications for the effects? What kind of children are we creating?
This is not a diet book-far, far from it. Dropping another diet book into the same culture will do nothing but take up more room on your shelf.
Generation XL shows you how kids were created to eat, breathe, sleep, run, and live. At the same time, Drs. Mercola and Lerner help you change your family culture and recognize where the culture around you isn't working so you can avoid it or help to change it.
Since prevention is always easier (and wiser) than cure, incorporating the lifestyle changes suggested in
Generation XL gives your child a realistic way to reach and maintain a healthy weight; dramatically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other health risks; and build a strong body and positive mental attitude, maximizing his or her IQ and giving the best chance for success.

An Essential Read for All Parents.......2007-09-04
All parents with an inkling of health consciousness must read this book. Dr. Mercola and Dr. Lerner did a remarkable job of spelling out just what the children of today need to become the healthy adults of the future. Please read it, for your children's sake!
An honest look. An honest solution........2007-07-03
This should be a textbook for families, teachers, doctors, anyone who cares for kids or plans to have kids.
Thank you authors of Generation XL!
Book Description
This is the first practical guide for the families of children and teenagers with celiac disease, a chronic, life-long digestive disorder. One out of 250 Americans is born with this genetic autoimmune condition, which is characterized by intolerance of gluten (wheat, rye, barley, malt, and other food additives) and often goes undiagnosed. In a supportive conversational style, Danna Korn shows that it's possible for kids with celiac disease and their families to lead happy and healthy lives.
Parents find advice on how to deal with the diagnosis, cope with emotional turmoil, and help their child develop a positive and constructive attitude. Especially important is the guidance on menu planning, grocery shopping, strategies for proper food preparation, and deciding whether or not the entire family should be gluten-fee. There's even a section on junk food!
What about the child who has difficulty sticking with the prescribed diet? Parents find tips on conditioning behavior and how and when to give kids some control over what they eat. Also covered is the challenge of controlling meals outside of the home-at birthday parties, restaurants, camp, and on vacation. Dozens of recipes help parents be creative and offer well-rounded appealing meals and snacks. There's also information about how special education laws can help with services at school.
As the only comprehensive book of its kind, Kids with Celiac Disease will be the bible for the thousands of families coping with this condition. Physicians and nutritionists too, will want to refer new families to this complete resource.
Customer Reviews:
The most helpful book we own.......2007-05-14
After our one year old was diagnosed with Celiac Disease this was the first book we were told to buy. It is the most helpful book we own and it will continue to be the most helpful book we own as our little one grows up.
This book is great at helping with the psychological impact of this disease for our daughters young age, and it continues through her teen years.
We are forever grateful for this book. The author captures the feeling of every parent when they are first informed that their child has Celiac.
This book should be given out at the time of diagnosis.......2007-02-07
This book was a life-saver for me. I read it cover to cover five dreadful days into my daughter's diagnosis, and found myself laughing and crying at Danna's wit, wisdom, and caring. Never mind that she goes into great detail on the 'what to do' and 'what not to do', I actually found the chapter on dealing with this emotional rollercoaster I've been on to be the most helpful. It helps to have an author point out that yes your child's life will never be the same, and that it's probably harder on you than it is on them. It helps that she's been there, and isn't just some doctor spouting out their take on it. It helps that she went through all these things and is able to say 'You know what, just deal with it and get on with your life - I did it, and so can you'.
She writes with a lot of humor, making it a fast, easy read.
Besides all this, the information at the back of the book is a treasure -
lists of websites, phone numbers, and organizations that are invaluable to any novice celiac parent.
Excellent read for the newly diagnosed .......2006-11-10
I was loaned this book from a support group (The Happy Villi in Massachusetts) when my three year old was diagnosed with Celiac's disease. It was FANTASTIC! This support group had hundreds of books and recommended a few for me to borrow, including this one. This was by far the best book for a family with newly diagnosed child(ren) with Celiac's disease. It covers everything from how a child will feel growing up with a disease, what to do with grandparents and familys who don't understand the severity of strict diet adherence to how to navigate the birthday parties and family functions. Also gives tons of perspectives from children's points of views which was great to read.
I eventually had to return this book to the support group but I wound up buying three more (one for my family, one for my daughter's school, and one for my pediatrician).
Very Valuable.
Extreme caution.......2006-11-02
I STRONGLY recommend that you do not pick up this book unless you are already certain that you or a blood relative has been diagnosed BY A DOCTOR as having celiac disease.
There are a lot of good tips and information in this book for families who have celiac. This is a good resource for those people.
There are also a lot of misleading statements which come together to be the worst book ever for a hypochondriac to come across. While it may be true that it possible to have the disease without having any symptoms, and it may also be true that it is possible to test negative for the disease and still have it, it is also true that it is possible that you may have hypochondria and may have nothing wrong with you at all, or something much less daunting like IBS or a simple wheat allergy. Running to the doctor constantly, convinced that you or your child has developed a new symptom and must have ANOTHER blood test may be fun for some, but believe me that it causes a lot of problems for everyone around you (not least of which the child) when your fears are silly and unfounded. I speak from experience.
Beware.
Kids with Celiac Disease.......2006-02-21
If you have a child that has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, this book will explain everything you need to know about coping with the disease. It will be an invaluable tool toward helping you and your child learn more about being gluten-free and healthy. This is the best source I have found so far. It made the entire process a little less scary.

Book Description
In 1996, shortly after best-selling author Judy Mazel released the sequel to her original book The New Beverly Hills Diet, Dr. John Monaco, a pediatric critical care specialist and former "fat kid," turned to Mazel's program to combat his own critical weight problem and improve his health. After achieving great success himself, he decided that where adults succeeded on the program, kids could, too - perhaps even more so. Most important, Dr. Monaco realized that obesity among children was the main factor precipitating life-threatening diseases among them - such as asthma, diabetes and clinical depression - as well as other serious, though not potentially fatal, problems like excessive strain on bones, joints and muscles.
Mazel and Monaco have teamed up to offer parents Slim and Fit Kids, a one-of-a-kind approach to raising healthy, well-adjusted children. Combining Mazel's successful twenty-plus years of experience with food combining with Monaco's pediatric expertise, this book will teach parents everything they need to know about nutrition, digestion and nutrient absorption. This compelling book provides easy-to-understand information on the science of pediatric nutrition, as well as down-to-earth reminders on children's natural eating habits, making it easy and fun for parents to teach healthy nutritional habits that will last a lifetime.
Divided into parts, the first focuses on children's obesity. Chapters in this part include an overview of the problem of obesity in children and the diseases and disorders it engenders; Dr. Monaco's discovery of the Beverly Hills Diet and his idea to adapt it to children's nutrition; an overview of the digestive process; a summary of developmental nutrition, explaining the nutritional needs and issues of each age group; and personal accounts of the childhood obesity problem. The second part shows parents the practical steps to incorporating the nutritional principles they have learned into a daily program for their kids.

At last, a fun and healthy approach to weight loss!.......1999-10-23
I read this book in a night and at 5am excitedly began trying some of the exercise examples. My son, who was "camping" in the living room for the week-end, opened one eye warily and asked me if I'd lost it? Before I knew it however, he began showing me the movements. At last, a practical book that details an approach to weight loss that eliminates hunger, promotes self-determination without the negatives and creates a fun and healthy new lifestyle for the whole family! Judy Mazel's approach to weight loss in "The New Beverly Hills Diet" had helped me lose 17 lbs. almost overnight, but the simple modifications to the plan in "Slim and Fit Kids" creates just enough flexibility to make it easier and all inclusive. More importantly, Dr. John Monaco's medical expertise clearly supports July Mazel's approach to weight loss and answers many of the leading questions about obesity, lifestyle and 'food stuffs' that currently plagues American society today. In addition, the exercises, recipes and the positive psychological support presents an unbeatable package. I highly recommend "Slim and Fit Kids", not just for families with overweight kids, but for everyone who is concerned about their health.

excellent guide for change.......2005-11-17
I have used this book myself and loaned it to friends for over 8 years. Whenever people ask me how to get their kids to change eating habits, I hand them this book. It gives a strategy, explains why, and then tells how. There are even a few recipes. I love having this tool to help friends switch to a healthier lifestyle!
Very disappointed........2005-09-10
I only bought and read this book because it was on a list of suggested reading in order to take and pass a nutrition exam. Unfortunately, it was of no value. The author, Cheryl Townsley, is not noted in this book as being a nutritionist, which shows. She mentions that fructose is a refined sugar to be avoided. There are too many references to God, prayer, and revelation. Also, you cannot begin to count the many references to the author's parent company for additional products you can buy. I will however, try some of the recipes, as they do sound interesting and healthy for kids.

Not for Type 1's.......2007-05-15
I have read this book & it is not very good for Type 1 kids or parents of Type 1's. Yes, Type 2 is on the rise in the US for kids, & for those kids which eating, exercise, & weight loss will help curb and possibly cure their Type 2 diabetes, this book is good. For type 1's who can NOT control their disease with dieting & exercise, this book was practically useless. =0( Two thumbs way down for Type 1's.
Reviewer is clueless.......2007-03-11
This book title piqued my interest, but the reviewer that says "With obesity and diabetes on the rise in children, parents are eager for information that can make raising a child with diabetes easier" tells me that the reviewer doesn't have a child that lives with diabetes 24/7.
The majority of children diagnosed with diabetes have Type 1, which is an autoimmune disease and has nothing to do with obesity. There is no known cause of Type 1 diabetes and at this point no one can prevent it. There is a huge myth in this world that children get diabetes from "eating too much sugar," and that is not the case in Type 1 (again, the majority of children have Type 1). It IS caused by the immune system preventing the pancreas from producing insulin, and no one can survive without insulin. When the body does not produce insulin, then the person with Type 1 diabetes needs injected insulin.
EVERYONE needs to learn to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Kids with Type 1 diabetes can eat NORMALLY like everyone else, but they need to count carbs and take insulin for it because of the fact that their pancreas does not produce insulin.
The book might have great information and be written by someone who has true knowledge of Type 1 diabetes, but if so, the author wouldn't be happy to have THIS particular statement used to promote their book. If the book deals with Type 2 diabetes in children, then the title of the book should specify that.
Everything's covered here........2006-09-24
'Healthy' and 'diabetes' usually don't go together; particularly when children are involved - but thanks to modern medicine and 101 Tips for Raising Healthy Kids with Diabetes, they can go together quite nicely. Parents are given quick, easy answers to topics relating to medication, nutrition, and handling diabetes throughout the age groups. From sports safety to schooling options, everything's covered here.

A must-have for all moms........2007-07-25
I first saw this book in a public library and love it after few mins' reading, then I ordered it from Amazon. It's informative and helpful for moms who want to raise happy and healthy kids. I absolutely recommend this book to all moms!
useful book.......2007-06-22
This book is quite useful for helping out with a sick child. Unfortunately there are a lot of products that aren't available to everyone. For example where I grew up there was not a naturopath for MILES. Therefore a good portion of the book would not apply to my circumstances. Still, I do what I can and appreciate the information it contains about basic immunity-building and natural remedies. It is very supportive and info-rich.

Dynamite in a Small package.......2000-09-16
I loved this book because it has many simple, "how to" type instructions for parents on raising a happy family. I am an educator/trainer myself and I appreciate that the book quickly reduces complex child raising information into a usable, fun format. It also is the kind of inspiration parents need on their bedside table for those days when nothing is working. The operating system in this book seems simple, but you will find yourself reading it again to get the depth. Taking punishment out, and putting natural consequences into parenting is a courageous, high integrity way to live. The book shows us how to do this, with great tools for parents and all of us who love and care for children. Bravo!!
