Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Microsoft Office is the number-one selling software for the Mac; the Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage applications are more dominant in the Mac world than they are among PC users. And Microsoft has greatly improved and enhanced Office 2004 to take advantage of the latest Mac OX features. In short, Microsoft Office for the Mac is wildly popular and better than ever. But as incredible and powerful it is, the Office 2004 suite comes without a single page of printed instructions. That means you're left to forge your own path through its countless innovative and useful new features and tools--until now. Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual is the manual that should have been in the box. It's the map that clearly and easily guides both beginners and veterans through this new suite. Mark H. Walker, Franklin Tessler, and Paul Berkowitz deliver all the practical information you need to master the basics and make the most of all four Office 2004 programs--Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage. It's four books in one! According to Microsoft's own research, the average Office user taps into less than fifteen percent of the suite's features. With first-rate writing, a handcrafted index, and the trademark humor and clarity of every Missing Manual, Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual will change that. Because this isn't an authorized book, Walker, Tessler, and Berkowitz candidly point out which features are gems in the rough worthy of your focused attention--and which are junkware that you best continue to overlook. Whether you're an Office beginner eager to master one or all of the applications in the suite or a longtime Office user looking for detailed coverage of what's new (and what's removed) in Office 2004 and hoping to implement power-user techniques for better and more efficient work, this funny and friendly, comprehensive guide will prove indispensable.

A big, heavy book that I wish I could read in bed but it weighs too much on my stomach. It has a lot of stuff and I will use it as a reference when I have a problem converting my old Word 2000 text to the newer 2004. I'm new to the Mac computers.

Great book for OS X users. You can easily troubleshoot with this book. Saves time and money. Should never have to call for manufacters help again.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-12-26

This book was a disappointment. I had expected a reference of the caliber of David Pogue's Mac OS X Tiger manual. Among problem areas: a hard-to-navigate and incomplete index, fuzzy photo insets, and incorrect cross-references. The manual has the feel of something put together in a hurry without proper proof-reading, and borrowing heavily from canned sources. I learned some things but had to work harder to glean the information than I should have. I would not recommend this manual, unless it's the only game in town. I don't think it is.

Too many writers of books about software let the software determine how they organize the material. If the File menu contains commands A, B, and C, the writers put A, B, and C in the same chapter, regardless of whether they're functionally similar. AppleWorks 6: The Missing Manual is organized more logically, tackling the functional units--including Internet integration, macro programming, and table creation, among others--in separate chapters. It's an approach that makes sense for AppleWorks, in which the spreadsheet module can be used to create tables for word processor documents and all the modules rely on a common graphics editor. For those who want to know what a particular menu command does, there's menu-by-menu documentation in an appendix.

You get the requisite instructions: explicit steps to follow if you want to transpose rows in a spreadsheet, for example, or export button graphics for use in Web pages. Other procedures, like making calculations that refer to cells in multiple spreadsheets, are explained in text. "Workaround Workshop" modules call attention to shortcomings in AppleWorks (such as its two-palette limit when you're working with colors) and explain how to get around them (use a custom palette). Throughout, the instructions are engaging and fun to read. --David Wall

Topics covered: AppleWorks 6, the multipurpose office-productivity suite for Mac OS; the suite's capabilities, comprehensively--including word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, databases, and presentations; how to create documents and databases from scratch, as well as from existing materials.

Book Description

If you prefer a more streamlined alternative to the bloat and complexity of Microsoft "sport-utility" programs, AppleWorks 6 is the stealth office suite. Hugely popular in classrooms, colleges, and small offices, it's got word processing, graphics, database, web design, spreadsheet, and slide-show functions in a single, beautifully integrated application. Every year, AppleWorks arrives in the hands of four million Apple iMac and iBook buyers. There it sits on the hard drive, a masterpiece of smooth integration and clever interface design, accompanied by templates, art libraries, and fonts--and no printed instructions. AppleWorks 6: The Missing Manual is the book that should have been in the box. It covers:

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Manual / AppleWorks 6 by Jim Elferdink.......2007-03-09

I am a user of all the Missing Manuals. I would not be without them. This one is well laid out, is easily understood and very helpful. It is always nice to have directions in print. Unfortunately in today's world, the producers of the software do not understand such a concept. That is why we are lucky to have folks like Jim Elferdink to take care of us.

1 out of 5 stars You Have Got To Be Kidding?.......2006-04-14

As someone who bought his first computer in 1986 it's been a long strange trip from there to here. And things have not exactly been gettin better all the time!

QUE published the first computer manual I ever bought. It cost $29.95, contained over 1,000 pages and covered every conceivable aspect of WordPerfect 5.0. It wasn't always easy to understand (Where do they get the people who write these books? And how many IQ tests are they required to fail to prove themselves worthy of computer manual authorship?) But if you were patient and willing to put in the time you could usually find an answer to your question.

That happy sort of situation ceased to exist some years ago when computer programs began to become as bloated as a dead cow in fly time and things only got worse with the publication of Apple Works 6 the Missing Manual!

"If Only it were missing!" I've found myself thinking to myself time after time after time as I have struggled futilely to find the simplest answer to the simplest question with no luck whatever.

Today, for instance, I crafted a letter to an old friend that was quite long. Though I usually am satisfied with one sided printing, this opus was soooo long that two sided printing was more than clearly called for. Soooo, fear rising like the Red Sea in my throat I grit my teeth and plunged headfirst into yet another frustratingly complex search for the infamous "simple answer" to the question:

"How do you print on both sides of the page?"

First, I turned to the almost nonexistent index in hopes that some mention might be made there of printing. Although printing problems are legendary in the world of computing there was a mere 10 items listed under the heading of Printing in the index. And, you guessed it, none of them seemed to point in the direction of two-sided printing.

Oh, I gave it a try. In fact I flipped through page after page of indexed references, but I came up empty handed.

So next, off to the Table of Contents. Where, under Advanced Word Processing I found - can you believe this - not a single mention of printing, let alone two-sided printing.

I would continue but I fear that what tottering remains of sanity I still manage to cling to with desperation might not survive the test so I will bring this rambling and time wasting rant to a close with three suggestions for O'Reilly Publishing:

1) Burn this book before the word gets out that you published it. Failure to do so might mark the beginning of the end for your company.

2) Raise the failing score of the IQ exam your computer manual authors must fail to get the job by at least 60 points! Perhaps then the candidates will at least have to be able to read before being allowed to write.

3) See what you can do to arrange a long relaxing trip to some Gulag for Elferdink and Reynolds. Believe me, they need a vacation and so do WE!

Just Switched from MSFT. Not as good as Apple Works For Dummies.

3 out of 5 stars The Missing Macros.......2005-03-08

Page 323-327 tells you how to use the macros in AppleWorks 6. It says to look under FILE and MACROS. If they're there I couldn't find them.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "The book that should have been in the box".......2005-02-05

I have used Appleworks since it was Clarisworks 4, then Appleworks 5, and now 6. I love this program with it's ability to drag and drop between the Word Processing, Database, Spreadsheet, Graphics, Drawing and Painting. I create all of my fliers, newsletters, etc. with it. You can create slide shows and presentations, too.

This is a great book for anyone who already uses Appleworks, or would like to learn. It truly is "The book that should have been in the box" as the subtitle indicates. It is full of step by step instructions for understanding each part of the application. It has plenty of graphics to show you what it should look like and what your menu choices are.

The layout is easy to read cover to cover, or to skim for tips and tricks. The index and table of contents make it easy to find what you're looking for.

I recommend this book for beginners or veteran Appleworks users. From O'Reilly Books, it is one of the Missing Manual Series which you can always count on to be helpful.

Book Description

Microsoft Word has grown considerably in power, sophistication and capability over the past decade, but one thing that hasn't changed since the early '90s is its user interface. The simple toolbar in version 2.0 has been packed with so many features since then that few users know where to find them all. Consequently, more and more people are looking for "insider" tips that will allow them to use these advanced and often hidden features. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Word 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even though you will be able to find advanced features, you might not know what to do with them.

Word 2007: The Missing Manual, written specifically for this version of the software, explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax. You will will also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all.

Word 2007: The Missing Manual
This is right on the money! A very readable, very informative book written by someone who knows their subject - and has a dry sense of humour to boot. Well done Chris Grover! However you approach it, it's equally good: you can use it as a reference manual, skim through to pick up the bits you want (helped by the top-of-the-page index tabs), or just read it cover to cover as I did. There must be countless people like me that use Word every day and are unaware of most of the fantastic things Word can do for you. Word 2007 is a huge step forward from previous editions and has some major differences in how you get things done. This is the perfect opportunity to find out.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Reference For Word 2007.......2007-07-11

'Word 2007: The Missing Manual' by Chris Grover is another gem in the 'Missing Manual' series, a line that continues to impress and surprise me with how strong the quality of these books are and how affordable. Clocking in at 500+ pages and 19 chapters, this book is the perfect desktop reference to have at your side if you use Word 2007 for work, play, or just want to see what the new features, tips, and tricks are in the latest version of one of the flagship Microsoft products. Full of screenshots and fantastic writing, this book breaks content down at just the right places and is written in a way that anyone can understand!

From learning to use the new ribbon interface to the basics of word to higher level tasks such as writing macros and working with Visual Basic to put some code behind the scenes, this is a must buy for anyone that works with Word on a daily basis.

I've said it before, I'll probably say it again... the Missing Manual does it AGAIN!!!

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Word 2007 - The Missing Manual........2007-07-07

Microsoft Word is a very user-friendly product, and is not that difficult of the software to learn and use. However, with this new 2007 version of the popular product, there are some changes and additions that are worth looking at and learning about. The "Missing Manual" series by O'Reilly's Rogue Press is definitely a winner. Chris Gover did a good job covering a lot of useful information in this book. Keep this book on your desk, if you need a good reference source on the subject. 5 stars!

Book Description

Introduced by Apple in January 2005, iWork '05 is an innovative new suite of document and presentation software that's the same caliber as Apple's groundbreaking digital media applications and that's wholly dedicated to what Mac users like you care about most: artistry and creativity. iWork '05 isn't about "office productivity"--it's about creating slick and stylish documents and cinema-quality digital presentations that say precisely what you want them to say.

While iWork '05 helps you create stunning documents and presentations, the suite doesn't come with any in-depth documentation of its own. That's where iWork '05: The Missing Manual comes in. The book that should have been in the box, it gives you everything you need to master iWork '05.

Seamlessly integrated with the wildly popular iLife '05 and designed to take advantage of the advanced typography and graphics engine of Mac OS X, iWork is actually two separate programs: Pages and Keynote 2. Pages is a brand-new, streamlined word processor and page layout program that allows nonprofessionals to quickly and painlessly produce gorgeous brochures, newsletters, letters, invitations, product data sheets, and more. You can start documents from scratch or use one of the 40 professionally designed templates as a starting point. Keynote 2 is a significant upgrade to Keynote, Apple's PowerPoint-like presentation software that allows you to build unique presentations, demonstrations, storyboard animations, interactive slideshows, and more.

Like every Missing Manual, this one is refreshingly entertaining and scrupulously detailed. iWork '05: The Missing Manual gives you all the essentials of Pages and Keynote 2, including an objective look at each program's capabilities, its advantages over similar programs, and its limitations. The book delivers countless goodies that you won't find anywhere else: undocumented tips, tricks, and secrets for getting the very best results from both exciting new applications.

With the iWork '05 suite and iWork '05: The Missing Manual, you are totally equipped to give your work the style it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Great Text!.......2006-06-27

The learning curve for Pages can be steep if coming from Word or new to word processing all together. (Actually, it's probably less frustrating if your new altogether.) That's not Pages fault. I think Pages is actually quite intuitive. It is just different than Word, and in my opinion, far superior. This text does a great job explaining Pages' ins and outs, and also offers great tips that will help when using Pages in projects. The tips captions give the text a real hands on feal. It is written from the perspective of someone who really uses and enjoys Pages, not just a lifeless manual like the one that comes with iWork. (Though the one included in the box serves as a good reference.) I have't read the section on Keynote, as I do not have a need for it. Great Book, and still very useful even if you are an 06' user.

5 out of 5 stars "HI-HO HI-HO-- OFF TO IWORK WE GO" ...!!.......2006-05-09

Would you like to create documents with classy and colorful Pages templates that make you appear like you have the art department on your payroll? If you would, you're in luck! Author Jim Elferdink, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that introduces iWork '05, a brand-new software suite that'll eventually replace the venerable but aged AppleWorks.

Elferdink, begins by showing you how to create a basic document. Then, he covers everything you need to know about formatting your documents and introduces you to Pages' built-in spell checker. The author continues by describing how to use Find & Replace, an editing tool that can make short work of sifting through long documents. Next, he shows you how to lay out pages. Then, the author guides you through table and chart creation and formatting--starting with tables. The author continues by exploring the next step in the life of a Pages document: delivering it from your computer into the hands and in front of the eyeballs of your intended audience. Next, he shows you how to make your own templates so you can add them to Pages' built-in templates roster. Then, the author shows you how to plan, prepare for and deliver a better presentation. He also shows you how to build a basic presentation. The author continues by showing you how to add to your slides everything from text boxes and pictures, to tables, charts, and fancy transitions. Next, he shows you how to import presentations created with PowerPoint or AppleWorks, so that you can continue editing with Keynote. Finally, he shows you how to customize Keynote.

You'll find in this most excellent book, step-by-step instructions for using every Pages and Keynote 2 feature, including those you may not even have quite understood. This book's also designed to give you a thorough grounding in planning and pulling off effective presentations enhanced by Keynote.

5 out of 5 stars A solid reference which will appeal to beginners and advanced users alike.......2006-02-07

Jim Elferdink's iWork 05: The Missing Manual covers Pages and Keynote 2 as it provides all the basics of how to create documents and produce presentations with iWork's latest, powerful features. Mac users receive a solid reference which will appeal to beginners and advanced users alike: particularly appealing when covering such new functions as Keynote, which has gone through a major update to make it a formidable competitor to PowerPoint. Business users, especially, will find iWork 05: The Missing Manual an essential reference to maintaining professional standards.

4 out of 5 stars iWork'05: The Missing Manual.......2006-01-10

The iWorks'05 Missing Manual is truly a missing manual for Apple Computer's word processor/page-layout software and presentation software Keynote 2. If you are in a hurry to use either Pages or Keynote 2 or a very visual learner, I would recommend looking into a different manual. In the 379 pages, this book has a lot of detail on the two programs which is truly a manual. You can easy skip to the sections you need and do not have to read the entire book to use it. The author has chapters in both Pages and Keynote 2 and are very basic. In the beginning of some of the chapter he lets the reader know you can skip the chapter if you are experienced user. At the end of the book the author gives you resources to help you go beyond the book for additional help and ideas for using Pages and Keynote 2.

Pages

The book covers the basics of word-processing in case your are new to computers and word processing. The book then covers the layout features to Pages. The author gives you advice on different fonts and layouts. He covers why you would use certain fonts in the headers and body of the text. In addition the book covers creating tables, charts and working with objects. Objects include text, pictures and graphic in your document and how to place them in the document.

The author also covers how to use iTunes, iMove in Pages and why you might not want to use Pages to add in iTunes and iMove in to your document. He recommends using Keynote 2 instead. The book also covers exporting Pages to other word processors such as Microsoft Word and publishing the document to a web. The author also gives you example of what will happen if you export to various programs from Pages.

Keynote 2

The book covers the basics of how to develop and give a presentation in case you have forgotten or have never given a presentation before.

The author also spends some time on using Keynote 2 with laptops. He covers the reason why you might want to consider purchasing the PowerBook over an iBook. For instance, iBooks can only perform video mirroring which shows the same image on the screen as the external monitor and PowerBooks can be used in the dual-display mode which can show a different image than the PowerBook's screen. Keynote 2 can display to your audience the normal view of your slides on the external display and on your PowerBook you can show the current slide and the next slide, a speaker's notes, a clock, and time.

The book also goes in to using iTunes, iPhoto, and iMove with Keynote 2. They all integrate nicely together. The author also covers exporting Keynote 2 files to other formats. He discusses exporting to Microsoft PowerPoint, into a PDF, and into QuickTime in case the machine you are using does not have Keynote 2. The book also discussed how to publish a Keynote 2 presentation on a website.

I would recommend this book as a manual for Pages and Keynote 2. If you want use the program right way I would look for another manual if you are not willing to put some time in to the necessary reading.

5 out of 5 stars O'Reilly does it best........2005-11-07

The mini manuals out of the box were ok, but this book is great. I was able to finish a project that was "stuck". The beauty of the book is that it explains terms and ideas without being a "beginners" book. A lot of detailed ideas to use and apply to your projects or just how to use the program more powerfully. iWork is a great little program (less than 80 dollars) that is made even better with this book.

Quickly learn the most useful features of Microsoft Office 2007 with our easy to read four-in-one guide. This fast-paced book gives you the basics of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access so you can start using the new versions of these major Office applications right away. Unlike every previous version, Office 2007 offers a completely redesigned user interface for each program. Microsoft has replaced the familiar menus with a new tabbed toolbar (or "ribbon"), and added other features such as "live preview" that lets you see exactly what each option will look like in the document before you choose it. This is good news for longtime users who never knew about some amazing Office features because they were hidden among cluttered and outdated menus. Adapting to the new format is going to be a shock -- especially if you're a longtime user. That's where Office 2007: The Missing Manual comes in. Rather than present a lot of arcane detail, this quick & friendly primer teaches you how to work with the most-used Office features, with four separate sections covering the four programs. The book offers a walkthrough of Microsoft's redesigned Office user interface before taking you through the basics of creating text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases with: It's a great way to master all 4 programs without having to stock up on a shelf-load of different books. This book has everything you need to get you up to speed fast. Office 2007: The Missing Manual is truly the book that should have been in the box.

5 out of 5 stars All-In-One Office Reference.......2007-08-09

'Office 2007: The Missing Manual' by Chris Grover is an absolute gem of a book. With 850+ pages of material covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and so much more, this is the definitive reference item for all heavy Office users that want to ramp up as quickly and efficiently as possible. Broken up over 34 chapters, this book logically separates the different applications and uses of the Office program suite. Focusing heavily on not just the use of the apps but the difference with the "ribbon" changes of the 2007 versions, this is another grand slam by the 'Missing Manual' line of books.

The only person that I really couldn't recommend this for is if you are a user of a particular application in the Office suite. For you I would recommend on picking up one of the particular books that delve more into detail than this book does.

Awesome books, incredible job by one of the best book lines out there today.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-07-13

I've looked at most of Office for Mac books, and this one knocks me out. Very clear and thorough. I'm hoping they continue it for 2004.

1 out of 5 stars My advice: do not buy this book.......2003-11-30

I purchased this book last year for my wife who uses Office at work on a PC and at home on a Mac. She frequently has trouble figuring out how to do something at home that she does every day at work. Certainly this is due to variations in "the same" Microsoft product. However, every time she has turned to "The Missing Manual" she can not find the answer to what she feels is a simple problem.

Just today she made a comment that we should just burn the book because it simply has never once taught her anything. Yes, it is full of hints and suggestions but to call it a "manual" is misleading. We have found it impossible to use as a reference, to look up something and find the answer.

I am very disappointed and do not recommend purchasing this book, save your money.

    Book Description

Fast-paced and easy to read, this concise book teaches you the basics of Word 2007 so you can start using the program right away. Not only will you learn how to work with Word's most useful features to create documents, format and edit text, share the results and more, you'll also discover how to go beyond basic documents to handle graphics, create page layouts, and use forms and tables.

The new Word is radically different from previous versions, but with this convenient book, you can breeze through the new user interface and its timesaving features in no time with:

Word is used primarily for word processing, but there's more to this powerful program than meets the eye. It also offers a staggering array of advanced features that were once found only in page layout programs and graphics software. Many of these features are hidden among Word's cluttered menus, and even the pros can't find them all. For Word 2007, Microsoft redesigned the user interface completely, adding a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate.

Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as poor as ever, so even if you find the features you need, you still may not know what to do with them. Word 2007 for Starters: The Missing Manual helps you master Word's redesigned user interface and gives you exactly what you need to create unique, attractive and effective documents.

    Book Description

To the surprise of most Mac fans, the number one bestselling Macintosh software is Microsoft Office for the Macintosh. It's by far the most popular Macintosh software, and the first software purchase a new Mac user is likely to make. And for the first time, Office 2001 comes without a single page of printed instructions. The packaging is a five- inch-square clear plastic case housing the CD-ROM and little else. Fortunately, Pogue Press/O'Reilly is once again ready to embrace the befuddled and overwhelmed--with Office 2001 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual. It tackles each of the primary Office applications with depth, humor, and clarity, and provides relief for the hapless Mac user who'd rather read professionally written printed instructions than hunt through a maze of personality-free help screens. The book is structured to help the beginner as well as the seasoned user. Part One provides an overview of Word. From "What's New," to "Basic Word Processing," to "Document Design," to "Advanced Word Processing"--with in-depth details on creating Web pages and performing mail merges using Word. Part Two covers the new Palm-syncable calendar in Entourage, including all aspects of email, how to best use the calendar and address book, and crucial information on the Palm Hotsync. Part three explains all the finer points of Excel, including Microsoft's exciting new "List Manager," specifically designed for creating and manipulating lists without the prerequisite of learning spreadsheet tools. Office 2001 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual is coauthored by a dream team of Missing Manual alumni: David Reynolds, executive editor of MacAddict magazine and coauthor of AppleWorks 6: The Missing Manual, and Nan Barber, whose efforts as the copy editor of the first four Missing Manual titles gave her an intuitive feeling for the friendly, funny, authoritative voice of the series. Once again, the authors are joined by series founder David Pogue, who has closely edited the book to ensure excellence of depth, accuracy, and prose.

    5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2002-02-13

I have been a Wordperfect user forever, I had it on the Atari platform and then I got the Mac version when I switched to Macintosh computers. I was pretty disappointed when Wordperfect dead-ended. I have been using 3.5e for the last little while, but the world has taken to Word and I, until now, refused to go along.
One major sticking point on changing from Wordperfect to Word was that Word could not jump from start of file to end without me having to use two hands. I had learned to hit either the "home" or "end" keys and Word bugged the hell out of me because I had to use the command key as well. A minor annoyance to most, but to me this was big!
I bought Office 2001 for Dummies and got no help. The best I got was to use icons for start and end. A bit of an improvement, but still not what my fingers and brain had become instinctively used to.
I have had the Missing Manual for Office 2001 for a day and I was able to assign the keyboard to do it my way: The Old WordPerfect Way!
Thank you all of you. This book paid for itself with that one tip.

I have been browsing the Missing Manual, and it is overwhelming - in a satisfying way. It has so much more than the average computer manual. Best of all, it explains it in sufficient detail that I can actually do what the authors are writing about without the usual frustration. In the past, it has been my experience, that most manuals were written by computer programmers for their buddies to read, or else were so basic as to be useless.
If you're using Office 2001 on the Mac, get the Missing Manual.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Worth the Money!.......2001-09-08

I picked up this book a couple of weeks back and I have to say that I love it enough that I am going to go back and pick up the OS 9 Missing Manual.
The book is well laid-out, it's clearly written, it's up to date (for now) and I found out enough info for Excel that made it worth the money to buy it.
The book is aimed at someone who is relatively familiar with the Mac operating system but not with Office 2001. It starts from the beginning but does not coddle you. I think it even goes so far as Excel macro programming but I have yet to go so far.
I used to be a computer bookstore manager(Toronto Computer Books) and I've seen a LOT of books in my time. This is one that I would actually pay for full price! :-)

    5 out of 5 stars Things I didn't know I could learn.......2001-07-27

This book exceeded my expectations. It is written in that clear way that helps you to understand processes that are after all, usually pretty hard to understand. The many sidebars of tips are especially helpful and reading it made me want to try out some of the new stuff mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars What You Always Should Have Known About Office.......2001-06-15

I work with Microsoft Word and Excel everyday and thought I was knowledgeable about the software. However, this book presents much more than I ever realized was available. The writing is crystal-clear and addressed to users of the software, not to computer intelligentsia.

The text is supported by examples and graphics that make even the most exotic features understandable. The chapters on Word and Excel have provided me with a number of timesaving features that I did not realize existed. Just incorporating Command-Z into my keystroke repertoire and a couple other features alone is worth the price of the book.

I have no doubt that this is the best-written and most comprehensive text available on this subject. Neither Microsoft nor any other software provider that I have seen has ever offered anything so well done. I recommend it without reservation.
