Book Description
How To Create a Magical Relationship, winner of the 2007 Nautilus Book Award in the category of Relationships / Men & Women's Issues, is based on the idea that you don't need to "work on" your relationship in order to "fix it". Relationship coaches for nearly two decades and married for over 20 years, authors Ariel & Shya Kane have identified 3 simple Principles of Transformation that allow people to create a relationship that surpasses their dreams. The Kanes reveal how to recognize and bypass the pitfalls to having a happy and satisfying relationship. This book provides a road map to realizing a love relationship to its fullest and it is also a guide to self-discovery and well-being, since the ability to create a magical relationship starts with one's relationship to oneself.

The Wisdom of the Ages.......2007-09-16
Some people might think that it is impossible to create successful relationships immediately, but the Shyas' discuss the concepts that will allow you to do just that. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, this book deserves a its devoted following and its high, customer ratings. The concepts in this book are timeless and infinitely valuable. I'd also suggest a separately produced, newly-released DVD that is complementary to this book and provides very specific techniques for applying these Shya insights: see the web site of www.tcap.us (the DVD is about building confidence, but it it much more than that).
Pure relationship gold!.......2007-09-10
The golden cover is appropriate, because what's inside is pure gold! In this book, Ariel and Shya Kane share three timeless principles and many real-life examples that will help you to have satisfying relationships with everyone, from the most important people in your life, to the people that you meet each day. Whether you're looking to connect with new people, to reconnect with your loved ones, or are just intrigued by the possibility of "Magical" relationships, this book is for you. It transformed my life - give it a shot!
Brilliant for Friendships and Work, As Well As Marriage!.......2007-08-22
How to Create A Magical Relationship is deceptively simple, yet brilliant. At first, I felt one of its major ideas--that seeing a behavioral pattern, without fixing it, is enough to complete it-- was too simple. Then I began to see how it applied to my own life in ways I couldn't have imagined.
An example: I decided a long time ago that my mother should have learned to speak my father's first language, Spanish. I was embarrassed that she couldn't speak it well, and thought that she should work harder to learn it. As a result, I decided that when I grew up, I would study languages. Well, I did, but because I learned in a very competitive way, I was overly-sensitive to criticism, and I frequently got burned out. I even destroyed a couple of friendships by insisting that bilingual friends divide languages equally- in other words, if I had a Korean friend, I wanted us to spend half of our time speaking Korean, even if the friend was fluent in English. If they didn't agree to this, I'd feel they were cheating me.
This book helped me to recognize that pattern and even see small ways I competed in my own marriage! I still study languages, and I have a great relationship with my husband, but when my competitive side shows up, I recognize it, and in the seeing, I am able to avoid it. As a result, I'm able to listen better, take correction, and have more fun. My marriage AND friendships AND my work life are easier, and yes, more magical.
Incredible new possibilities.......2007-06-05
"How to Create a Magical Relationship" is a perfect guideline for possibilities. It touches on all aspects of relationships: the one with
yourself, your partner, parents, friends, colleagues - just every relationship! Easy and fun to read, Ariel and Shya Kane explain the principles of transformation and living in the moment. How awareness and not working on yourself open up doors. A whole new approach that makes all the difference! I highly recommend it.
A phenomenal and groundbreaking book! .......2007-06-01
This book is incredible and inspiring. The authors approach relationships (both to ourselves and to each other) from a very pragmatic angle. They put the onus of the relationship on the individual: "It takes two to fight and one to end the fight" is something that I really can see now. I recognize myself and my patterns of behavior in my relationships more clearly than ever before. For example, how my unexamined, mechanical behaviors can trigger unwanted reactions and patterns from other people (especially people who are close to me like my parents). I see how I can cause a chain reaction to occur and I now have the ability to either 'go there' or take a brand-new road. I don't have to be a victim anymore and can instead take 100% responsibility for my life. To the spiritual seeker, a book like this is a blessing!

In American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Nutrition, nutritionist William H. Dietz and pediatrician Loraine Stern have written an authoritative, comprehensive resource for parents concerned about their children's nutrition. The book is subtitled Making Peace at the Table and Building Healthy Eating Habits for Life, and it provides useful tips for concerned parents on how to feed their children well without turning into the food police. Subjects covered include instructions for breast and bottle feeding, introducing semi-solids and solids, toddler meals and resistance, school lunches, adolescent/parent food struggles, eating disorders, the relationship between smoking and weight distribution, and, of course, the recommended Food Guide Pyramid. The chapter on eating and food problems, titled "Spitting Up, Gagging, Vomiting, Diarrhea, and Constipation," may not make for great reading on a sensitive stomach, yet it provides a great resource for parents with an ailing child. Another chapter, titled "What Do I Do About Outside Influences?" discusses parental influence, peer pressure, television, and how they may affect your child's relationship with food. Additional subjects include food safety, alternative diets, and allergies. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
From the foremost authority on children's health--
a comprehensive guide to making peace at the table, feeding your baby, and creating healthy eating habits for the whole family
The American Academy of Pediatrics knows that the real challenge for parents isn't being aware of what to feed kids--it's getting children to actually eat those foods. From the preeminent organization in the field, the Guide to Your Child's Nutrition is a source of reassuring advice to help parents raise healthy children. Beyond simple guidelines describing the dietary needs of children from birth through adolescence, the Academy gives tips on:
¸ choosing what's best for your newborn
¸ introducing solid foods
¸ feeding toddlers and picky eaters
¸ reducing fat and salt for children of any age
¸ keeping adolescents eating well
¸ identifying allergies in children
The AAP Guide to Your Child's Nutrition uses a two-color format to make its information easy to use and quick to find. Sidebars offer low-fat snacks and menus, help for allergy sufferers, and a plethora of suggestions to make mealtimes easier and healthier for everyone.

Just ok.......2006-03-20
I was excited about this book, but I have found that not much of it is relevant for the age of my little one (4 years old). They list a lot of good information for babies and a lot of good information for older kids, but the information for toddlers and preschoolers was lacking, in my opinion.

I bought this book to help me figure out how to make sure my infant was receiving all the nutrients necessary and also to help with the transition from just formula to eating regular meals. The book didn't help with information on the transition, but I still think the nutrition information is great.
It has good tips on how to keep feeding time from becoming a battle and good tips on how to start your children out on the right track to healthy eating.
The information on what NOT to feed your infant is also extreemly important and could prevent many choking incidents!

Of no use at all.......2007-06-28
After 2 daughters, I had hoped that this book would help me understand my totally foreign son. Instead, it gave generic, common sense, heard it all before child rearing advice that is easily applied to any child, whether male or female. I gained no insight as to why I find my son more challenging than my daughters were at his age,nor have I learned anything I hadn't heard before from "Reviving Ophelia" or any other revelatory parenting advice book. It was irksome to constantly see the author's ideas invoked as unique to raising boys, as if girls would not also benefit from the hardly original concepts of consistent discipline and active listening.
Raising a Son.......2007-06-10
Arrived in perfect condition-like new!! A simple way to approach parenting boys!!
A disgrace.......2005-07-12
I found this book to be shoddily researched and poorly executed, and it completely ignored many important issues in raising sons while making issues that are about raising *children* in general gender-biased.
The first two chapters assert without sufficient evidence (pseudo-scientific anthropological folklore) that boys, who have testoterone flowing through them, are fundamentally and radically different from girls, who also have testosterone flowing through them, albeit in lesser amounts. The remainder of the book offers fairly standard parenting advice about encouraging boys and setting boundaries, but implies that these rules, and these encouragements, apply only to boys. By omitting girls from such concepts as "assertive" and "competitive" and "building codes of honor" the book implies that these concepts are not relevant to women.
The emphasis on the father being necessary for a son's proper development, especially as backed by folklore from primitive cultures, is both disingenuous and misleading, even from an anthropological standpoint. While there are differences between boys and girls and both sexes benefit from both male and female role models, it is not necessary or even necessarily desireable that the male rolemodel be in a monogamous long term sexual relationship with the mother. In many ancient societies including several Native American cultures, either the brother of a woman or her father often took on the "male parent" role for her children. This was especially true in cultures that were more egalitarian. There is no scientific evidence that these role models are any less effective than the child's father.
Finally, and most disgracefully, in the discussion of boys' sexuality, not once in several pages of discussion is it ever mentioned that sexuality other than masturbation requires the participation and consent of another human person (statistically likely to be female) and that boys should be carefully trained that at all times the woman has the right to her own body and he is never granted access of any sort, from intrusive and inappropriate comments about her body to sexual intercourse, without her consent. Instead, the book refers to girls in their teen years as "sexual stimuli", not as individuals deserving of respect and dignitiy. Discussing this critically important issue in the raising of sons while explicitly sanctioning and modelling the objectification of his female peers is almost criminal.
Helps defines different roles for different times..........2005-01-16
As a older mother, I have read just about anything I can get my hands on regarding pregnancy, babies and parenting. I found this book to be very useful in helping me (and my husband) understand what I can do to help my son grow up to be a strong and caring man. For example, it explains when your son will cling to his mother, and when he will seek out a male role model and push his mother away. Understanding that (I hope) will ease some of the stress of that time, and relieve the guilt that could hinder that transition for him.
Something has to be done.......2004-06-26
The premise of this book is an interesting one. Most men end up being self-absorbed hedonists because they have not been raised correctly, and most importantly, their mothers have not been a strong enough presence in their sons lives.
Boys can be very destructive if they are not kept in line by the women, who will be hurt if they do not stand their ground.

THE book for pre-marital knowledge.......2006-09-13
If you only had one book to get on the topic of marriage, this would be it. It presents a comprehensive outline of the major aspects of marriage, complete with relatable anecdotes. It is a well-written book that is very accessible and easy to understand. I would say, though it (nor any other book) cannot completely replace one-on-one personal pre-marital counseling, it's probably the next best thing. Very highly recommended...
A Real, Authentic Presentation of Marriage Principles.......2006-03-08
Brent and Janis Sharpe's book is not only informative, but engages the reader through humorous stories and speaks from the heart of counselors and pastors who understand the potholes and struggles of today's married couples. You NEED to read this book!!!!

Book Description
You wouldn't let your children wander off into an unfamiliar neighborhood alone -- nor should they be left to explore the vast world of electronic media by themselves.
You may have read about the effects violent television shows and video games can have on children, but you know the solution isn't simply to unplug everything. The key for parents, says Dr. David Walsh, founder and president of the nonprofit National Institute on Media and the Family, is to be informed and involved when choosing the electronic environments where kids play and learn.
Dr. Dave's Cyberhood helps parents take stock of the growing number of films, TV shows, video games, music, and web sites that stream into their homes every day. With Dr. Dave as a guide, you can
- Teach kids how to interact with media responsibly -- whether they're playing alone or with friends
- Evaluate the content of videos, electronic games, and web sites to help you decide if they are appropriate for your family
- Talk openly with your kids about the kinds of media they like and map out cyberhoods that everyone can agree on
Complete with hands-on activities and positive recommendations for a variety of media products, Dr. Dave's Cyberhood gives parents the tools they need to find cyberhoods that their kids can enjoy -- and that they can trust.
Download Description
From movies and television to video games and the Internet, kids today have ready access to an exciting new world of entertainment and information. For their parents however, the almost limitless possibilities available are a mixed blessing. In this strategic resource for parents and educators, Dr. David Walsh, founder and president of the non-profit National Institute on Media and the Family, looks at the powerful, often insidious, influence of media from a psychological standpoint and encourages parents to pay attention to the messages kids are exposed to and make informed choices about how their children spend their time. Dr. Dave's Cyberhood is not anti-media. Rather, in clear, straightforward language, it examines such concerns as how much time a child should spend in front of a screen; how to evaluate the content of various media; how to teach children to use media intelligently and responsibly without direct parental supervision; and how to counteract peer pressure. Helpful recommendations for media products that will engage a child's imagination and stimulate his or her intellectual development, as well as suggestion for media-free activities for kids to do alone, with friends, and with their families, are also included.

Parents To Arms!.......2001-12-15
We need every tool we can get in our fight to protect our children from unwanted media influence. This book is a great addition to my personal tool kit. Very practical, it rewards parents with easy to do activities for kids of all ages.
an absolute must read for parents.......2001-07-28
In a world where parents are spending less and less time with their children, and relying more and more on easy alternative ways to keep them satisfied, I found this book eye opening and profoundly important. Even for parents with good instincts and sound parenting skills, this book offers facts and revelations that would give any caring parent cause to re-examine what their children are being exposed to, and make sure that their own influence outweighs that of the media surrounding them. It is clear from recent tragic events in our schools that parents need enlightenment about ways to sort through all the clutter and mixed messages our kids our getting. Bravo to David Walsh, Monica Walsh and Kristin Parker for their brave and powerful attempt to create awareness about this important subject.
Dr. Dave is a credit to Parents & Their children.......2001-07-07
I found this book, especially the specific exercises to be extremely helpful. However, as an avid reader of all of Dr. Dave's work, I still think his first major title is his masterpiece, Selling Out America's Children. While this title has many positive messages for parents and their children, in his earlier work Dr. Walsh prophetically outlines the longterm effect that the media have on children. Reading it now is especially enertaining because it shows how on the money he was over 7 years ago. This current title takes his work to a new level, but once you read it, be sure to check out Selling America's Children!
Another dumb book about controling kids.......2001-06-24
Come on! This is junk! This book is all about how to limit your children from what's going on around them 24/7. It's about sheltering your child from stuff that they are going to see everywhere. How can you stop your children from seeing this stuff? Well, you can't. This book is aimed at insecure parents who don't trust their children and can't make their own decisions. It's another pointless, dumb book aimed at pissing your kids off and further ruining your relationship with them. Don't buy this book. If you want to limit your kids intake of violence, move to Montana and live on a secluded ranch.
Finally , Some Common Sense!.......2001-03-05
I was afraid this book would just bash media, but Dr Dave has written a remarkably balanced book that is amazingly useful to me as a parent. The chapters each cover a kind of media and provide thoughtful exercises and questions that we can use with our kids. Last night at dinner my daughters and I went though one of his suggested exercises about advertizing messages. Later, we had some fun together "catching" some of the hidden ads on TV. I also found his chapter on the internet enlightening. I would absolutely recommend this easy read to other parents. It has given me hope that I can influence my kids attitudes about media without being heavy handed.
