Step by Step to Selling Your Screenplay.......2007-02-26
Whether you live in Iowa or Los Angeles, this book will guide you--in easy to understand language--from the finish line of your laptop to the Oscar stage. Its commonsense is commendable--"if you're not working is it your agent's fault?"--and its realism worth the price of admission: "What they are looking for in addition to good writing." Includes agent/manager profiles and discussion of agents/managers/attorneys--"which do you need?"

Don't think of trying to sell a script without reading this!.......2004-06-12
When I was searching for a useful and practical guide on how to sell a script, I decided that this book looked like the best bet. It struck me that some of the previous reviewers had been perhaps over-enthusiastic in praising it, but I now just know what they mean.
K Callan writes so easily that I made notes as I went along to make sure I didn't go too fast and miss anything! Everything is here - from the entertainment business in general, to what to wear when you meet an agent, and it is all supported by insightful quotes from agents that give you a real feel for how to see things from the agent's point of view, as well as your own.
For me, the acid test is still to come - but I didn't want to delay in telling other people that this is worth its weight in gold if you want to get anywhere in this business! By removing the ignorance, Callan empowers the reader (and writer, of course!) to stand tall amongst more experienced and prestigious writers.
Callan's a helper........2003-09-26
Hooray. At last a script marketing guide that helps playwrights too. K has done a masterful service to all who write for performance. The how, who, where of selling your hard work. Clearly presented in a logical sequence of chapters, each with action checklists. A must for every screen/stage writer's bookshelf.

Writing with the "newly elect" in mind, Brian McNaught advises his readers on how to forge connections within the sometimes thorny gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities while still maintaining ties with family and old friends. Along the way, he discusses sexual ethics, same-sex marriage, work, spirituality, and political action. Readers who have been out for a year or more, or who grew up in large cities, may find McNaught's earnest tone and tortoise pace too basic, or even unintentionally funny. (After telling us, for example, that he and his gay brother, Tommy, feel comfortable with each other in the way McNaught imagines that compatible heterosexual brothers might feel, he confides that they "talk often about issues from our childhood that we are currently working on in therapy.") But for the neophyte, his tolerant and deliberate approach will feel welcoming. A good introductory book for adolescents as well, and the families of gay people. --Regina Marler
Book Description
For many gay men and lesbian women, the first step in a long journey is acknowledging and accepting their sexuality. But what happens to those men and women after they have come to terms with this aspect of their lives? For many it may mean a complete reevaluation of very basic issues: family, relationships, community, and love. In this series of essays, McNaught explores these various aspects of life that may now be called into question for these men and women, and he sets out to educate and help guide them through the challenges they may encounter. Now That I'm Out, What Do I Do? solidifies McNaught's place as one of the best-known speakers on the issues that face gays and lesbians.
Customer Reviews:
A great addition to the sociology of being gay.......2004-11-28
Brian McNaught is truly to heterosexism what Gloria Steinem is to sexism. McNaught takes what heterosexism does to gay and lesbian children and says what would it be like if heterosexual male and female kids and teens were forced to have to dance with, kiss and say, "I love you's" to members of the same gender to which they are not attracted to romantically or sexually? He points out how that would be sexual abuse and how there is no comparable public outcry to what happens to gay and lesbian children. McNaught has been a voice for gays and lesbians since the 1970's and is a true role model. I hope he writes more books and leads us to the next step!
Good autobiography--but not a self-help book.......2003-06-21
This is a well-written and interesting account of many issues that Brian McNaught has faced as a gay man. These include his loss of faith in organized Catholicism, experiences with gays in politics and organizations, how he made straight friends and allies, ways he came out to his family and formed a new family of gay friends, and his trials of fighting discrimination in the workplace (he was fired due to his sexuality). All his experiences are worth reading about. The only caveat I'd have is that the title of the book and the first chapter sort of make it seem like it's a how-to, self-help book for the perplexed gay man who doesn't fit in to the gay world and wants to adjust. The book really isn't that at all, except in the broadest sense in that you can learn to emulate McNaught as a role model through his autobigraphical tales. This is not a psychology book. There are many other books available that are more directly focused on providing advice and guidance to those who want to make the most of a gay life, and that do so with a more therapeutic perspective. So just be aware of what this book is, and is not, before you buy.
Dummish.......1999-10-28
"Now that I'm out, what do I do?" Uh... live your life maybe? Uh... get on with the next thing? Uh... BE HAPPY? I'm sorry, I realize that this book was very sincerely endeavored, and that a lot of sweat and tears went into its writing; and I really made an effort to appreciate it because of that fact. But I just found that my reaction to what I was reading was very often, to use the vernacular, "duh". I was coming to terms with being gay myself at the time I began it, and was just for the first time beginning to get into reading a lot of literature that I had never let myself look into before. I was reading Andrew Sullivan's Virtually Normal at the time. I found I just kept putting this book aside for the other, and had to make myself start back into every so often. Maybe other readers will be happier with it. But again the best way for me to summarize my own reaction is, "Duh".
being who you are, and enjoying it........1999-07-24
Now That I'm Out was one of the first books I read after accepting the fact that I was gay. And of all the books I've read since coming out, this was probably my favorite. If you're dealing with your own sexuality, I strongly recommend this book. McNaught writes in a manner that's both lighthearted and serious. His wit and humor keep you turning the pages. And the variety of subjects he covers will provide every gay person with the help they need as they ask themselves the famous question: Now that I'm out, what do I do?
Recommended.......1999-05-17
McNaught (also the author of Gay Issues in the Workplace, a "certified sexuality educator," exhibits a mature perspective and supporting anecdotal material in this very personal guide to living and thinking gay after coming out. He takes on such topics as gay youth, marriage, family, religion and the workplace in an attempt to address one essential issue to gays: "Why do even those of us who consider ourselves out of the closet often duck personal questions when we know the truthful responses will both liberate us and change the attitudes and behavior of others?" Education and a vaguely spiritual form of self-realization, McNaught concludes, are the answer for gays and straights alike. Years of fielding questions during his talks to corporations and universities across the country has provided him with concise and focused takes on significant problems facing gays in America today. Chattily and cogently written, this book offers solid advice to the majority of gays, who are neither activist nor self-loathing, on how to come to terms with themselves in both gay and mainstream society.

Book Description
Finding and bonding with an adorable extraterrestrial with wondrous powers sounds like the perfect fantasy, a fantasy that becomes reality for Shiina and Akira, two typical Tokyo teens, as well as for an unknown number of other youths. But the brightest fantasies can cast the darkest shadows, and these cute, cuddly creatures will eventually grow into powerful, fearsome Shadow Dragons that, if bonded with troubled teens, can become threats of the highest order. And when these Dragon-bonded delinquents begin to organize in secret, the danger grows exponentially. Shiina and Akira inevitably draw the attention of this underground movement, and how the two girls choose their paths will determine the direction of their friendship - and, perhaps, the future of Mankind.
Customer Reviews:
Calm before the storm.......2007-05-13
By now, this series has set up nearly all of the major characters' places in its dramatic plot, and a couple little loose ends have been tied up concerning the shadow dragons: hulking, unearthly, and, more often than not, terrifying beasts that the mentally frenzied teenage cast can control to do whatever they wish. It keeps you interested at all times, intrigued at others, and even smiling at a few precious moments. Yet it's no understatement to say that volume 6 will be the last time you smile until a point past the current English releases.
Volume 5 was an offering dedicated to showcasing the murderous talents of the dragons on the evil side of the spectrum, commanded by three high schoolers working together to change the very framework of society. Joining them was Mamiko Kuri, the mysterious girl who reveals in the beginning of this book that she has a dragon, too. Its form remains unknown. Elsewhere, the heroic dragon bearers--headstrong Shiina Tamai, timid Akira Sakura, bitter Norio Koga, and smug Takeo Tsurumaru--are all off on their own adventures after the aerial onslaught brought about by the mysterious villains. Unbeknownst to young girls Shiina and Akira, their calm friend Sudo Naozumi is one of the telepathic dragon bearers they fought high above the ground, and the three make a plan to go on an innocent day of fishing. Trouble in paradise brews as they drive home, though: Sudo invites Akira to join his wicked group (to which she utters no reply), going on to explain that their fishing trip was no different from "hitting someone for your own enjoyment, but the fish can't complain or fight back". Through the whole series Sudo's remain the most brutally honest, realistically-thinking views of all those presented.
But there is another brief plot brewing, one which I consider the happiest and most believable through the whole manga. Some fans call it the story of the "terrible three", and it focuses on the relationship between three new youths, going a bit further into the origin of the dragons as well. Cousins Kyoji and Shoko Fukayama, along with lifelong friend Jyun Ezumi, become entangled in a romantic side story that journeys to every corner of the human heart and forces out some of the strongest emotions exhibited during all twelve of Shadow Star's volumes. The three meet up in Tokyo after a long separation; Kyoji in a coma after falling off an abandoned building, Shoko heartbroken at the severity of his injuries, and Jyun giving Shoko a caustic lecture on how selfish she came across when they wrote letters to one another. Shiina, who had befriended Jyun the previous night when they found each other training on their shadow dragons, is witness to it all, from Shoko confessing her poignant love for Kyoji to Jyun showing her the birth of a dragon princess. Kyoji ends up passing away, Jyun is revealed to be both deceased and a physical form of Kyoji's soul granted to him by the dragons, and Shoko cries that she can keep on loving Kyoji past his death.
If it sounds complicated, that's because it is, but it's, above all else, the ultimate contrast to the upcoming plot, which is without a doubt the most terrifying in the whole series. Author/artist Mohiro Kitoh knocks down your defenses with this volume's account of self-discovery and the power to move on, which makes volume 7 have leaps and bounds more impact. But what happens in the next volume stays in the next volume, and standing up against what has already come, Shadow Star's volume 6 is the simultaneously the best and most compassionate yet.

The Thoroughly Modern Married Girl: Staying Sensational After Saying "I Do"
ASIN: 076112599X |
Book Description
Like the Margaret Mead of the married, Jenny Lee investigates the care and feeding of those extraordinary creatures called husbands. Her Vera Wang gown still warm, she explores the uncharted territory of suddenly being a wife, with a real-life husband and one television remote, and shares the mysteries of:
- How to deal with the freakish occurrence of getting beaten at Scrabble, now that you can no longer retreat to your own apartment
- What to do when you find out that he's using your very, very expensive, very, very hard-to-find shampoo.
- Figuring out who is least inept at handling the money, including how to make it through a weekend when the ATM comes up zeroes
- Confronting dinner duty while staying faithful to your guiding principle: "It's not that I can't cook. I don't cook."
- Plus, the Great American Couple-Off, surviving the Perfect Fight, Date Night, and more.
Before the wedding, the most anyone told Jenny Lee about marriage was that it was "an adjustment," but "nice." So she took it upon herself to write the one book to read before (or definitely after) saying "I do." Hilarious, sharply observed, sweet, feisty, and courageous, it finally answers the eternal nuptial question: Am I really legally bound to a man who leaves mustard-covered knives on clean kitchen towels?
Customer Reviews:
SO HILARIOUS & SO TRUE!!!.......2007-07-10
These anecdotes will have you rolling! Hysterically funny and witty! I'm Korean-American like Lee and even though she doesn't delve too much into the whole racial/cultural issue just the stories about newlywed life are too candid to be made up! The part where she jumps up and says: "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE DOING THIS! YOU'RE SPOILING HIM!" when Lee's traditional mother brings her new son-in-law his favorite drink (lemon-lime Gatorade - just like my own husband!) on a silver tray with a crystal highball glass filled with ice. This is something my own mother has actually done.
The Great Dinner Debate is something we, to this day, still struggle with.
Anyway, this is a fast-paced, endearing, comical read. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down!
For Better or for Worse.......2006-11-10
Jenny Lee has provided the wedded and soon-to-be wed communtiy with a hilarious account of what married life is really like. Her hialrious anecdotes and sage advice, marinated in good humor, are thoroughly enjoyable.
why get married?.......2006-07-14
people are very divided on this book, but i wasn't into it. i guess the author is trying to be funny but she is so shallow, petty, and self centered, it seems to me that she wanted a wedding and not a marriage. last time i checked i enjoy hanging out with my husband, don't really care if he beats me at scrabble, or uses my shampoo. because those things don't matter. i guess if the book was funnier or more insightful i could have gotten beyond the whinning. but when you start the book basically complaining that you went to st. lucia, i can hardly relate.
Great for anyone who's newly married.......2006-01-02
I love this book! The first time I read it, I just could not stop laughing. And now, after a year, I am rereading it. It still cracks me up. I can relate to so many of the same experiences which Jenny Lee writes about. It is a very light fun read. Her writing is comical and very easy to read. I just bought her newest book "skinny bitching" and can't wait to start reading it.
I Do. I Did. Now What?! Life After the Wedding Dress.......2005-12-12
While it was a fun book to read, it was not at all what I thought it would be. I was looking for a book to help me with my nerves about my own wedding. The book jacket promises; how to meet other couples, cleaning compromises, and other mysteries solved. I really didn't see what mysteries it solved, nor to it answer any of the other promises. Like I said before it was fun to read, its short and quick, but does it answer any questions, I didn't think so. I also read The Conscious Bride by Sheryl Nissinen. When I looked at it the first couple of times I thought it was a book trying to talk you out of getting married, not so. It really makes you think about different aspects of your engagement and relationship, now that was a helpful book!

Book Description
Successful Leadership Means More than Rising to the Top Author Creatively Compares Two Different Approaches to Management NEW HOPE, Pa. - Even top players in the competitive business world can demonstrate flawed leadership abilities. In his new book, What Do I Do Now? Becoming a 21st Century Leader (now available through AuthorHouse), Ted Farrington, Ph.D., effectively illuminates the difference between simply filling the executive role and executing excellent management techniques.
Farrington draws from his experience in research and development to create an intriguing tale of two fictional business leaders, Catherine and Marcus. Both graduated with advanced technical degrees and have spent 20 years progressing through the ranks of large corporations. They are now both vice presidents and chief technical officers of their respective companies. Both are in charge of the same number of employees and allotted the same annual budget, but the similarities stop there. Catherine works an average of 50 hours per week compared to Marcus' 80 plus. Despite this, Marcus only achieves half the productivity, and his employees dread coming to work each day. How does Catherine do it?
Farrington examines these two case studies to reveal the different points at which management can impact the entire work force, either positively or negatively. Whereas Catherine sees every project and new position as a learning opportunity, Marcus fails to leave his comfort zone and try new things, which includes more effectively utilizing his employees skills.
"This book clarifies, in a very practical way, the differences between leading and managing, between enabling growth and controlling it, between inspiring and giving orders. I plan to use it in our leadership development," writes Gina Colarelli O'Connor, MBA program director at Lally School of Management, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and author of Radical Innovation, How Mature Companies Can Outsmart Upstarts.
Farrington was born and raised in upstate New York. He received a bachelor's degree in math and physics and a master's degree in math from Clarkson College of Technology and later earned a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. After working in industry for a few years, he received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Maine. He has 25 years of experience in a variety of different roles in research and development, from scientist to corporate officer, and holds 19 U.S. patents. He currently lives with his wife, Gail, in New Hope, Pa, and enjoys running marathons. What Do I Do Now? is his first book.
Customer Reviews:
Great career advice.......2005-12-08
This is the book that you wish your boss would read. And the book you wish you read years ago yourself. True leadership doesn't simply come with promotions and Farrington does a great job illustrating how true leadership requires a conscious change in the way one approaches their new role. A quick read, but a gem of wisdom.
