Book Description
At the young age of thirty-three, Nancy Davis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The finality of the neurologist's prognosis was devastating: within a year she would be confined to her bed and, at best, able to push the buttons on her television's remote control. Rather than accept a hopeless prognosis, Nancy learned about her illness and, in turn, created a new life for herself with a new health regimen and an expanded range of therapeutic options. In Lean on Me, Nancy shares her deeply personal story and provides a step-by-step guide for taking charge of your own health care in the face of life-threatening disease. Each step offers readers the strategies and strength to carry on when they are feeling overwhelmed and the concrete tools for actively seeking and receiving the best treatment. In the face of a medical crisis, Lean on Me shows how to navigate the health care waters, find hope, take positive action, and celebrate progress -- and supplies authoritative information that can save your life or the life of a loved one.

very helpful book!!!.......2007-09-17
I recommend this book for everyone suffering from MS. I was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago (at age 17), and this was the first time I actually received hope that my condition could improve. Since I've been following her program layed out in the book (9 weeks in now), I have felt a wonderful improvement in my condition which is more than any of the FDA approved drugs gave me. I will continue on this program and pray for the same success the author experienced. If you have MS or know anyone that does, get this book!!!!
Healing Multiple Sclerosis.......2007-09-06
The book is very easy to read and very informative. The only thing I want to point out, that if you live outside the US, it is difficult to get some of the supplements, as some do tell what they are for, but give very few details of what the composition is.
But all in all, very informative.
Great book ! .......2007-08-23
Wonderful book. I recommended it to many others. It arrived in the time promised, but was water damaged from rain or something. Amazon replaced it in very short order and let me keep the damaged copy which was still readable. I donated one of the copies.
Very disappointed.......2007-07-20
I'm newly diagnosed and was hoping that this book would give me some insight about life dealing with MS. This book touched on a few subjects such as diet and exercise but did not go into details. I personally would not recommend this book.
Everyone should read this book!!!!!!.......2007-06-12
This is the most amazing book I've read regarding health issues. I've met with Ann in person and she is a lovely, knowledgeable, and caring person, and it translated beautifully into her new book. This book is not
just for people who have MS, but for anyone who cares about their health now and in the future - it is a MUST read!!!! I've been following many
of the suggestions she has provided and it definitely has changed my life on a daily basis. Since Ann has personally experienced such triumph over
extreme diversity makes it even a more commanding read and fully confident she knows what she is writing about!!! Thank you Ann for providing this book to all those who care about their bodies and for the detailed information to make our lives better and more enjoyable each day.

There is a better choice.......2007-06-25
I would recommendThe American Physical Therapy Association Book of Body Maintenance and Repairover this book.
If you've can't afford your own personal trainer..........2007-05-15
Managing fatigue, balance, spasticity and other symptoms make exercising a true challenge for those of us with MS. The descriptions and the pictures ensure that you're doing the exercises correctly. Most can be done at home and/or at the gym. In Part 111, there is a discussion on the benefits of working out and pacing yourself on "bad days" that I found very useful. Definitely worth it.
Get physical !.......2007-05-13
A helpfull book, but if you are an MS patient, in order to follow its instructions, you need to live in a higly organised country in social care. You need a specialised physiotherapy Center to help you with the exercises.
Finally!.......2007-05-13
This book is wonderful. Finally one that does not do the "oh, poor you" and give us a workable workout schedule without costly machines. It is a book that makes us take charge of what we can control and gives us a better chance for a future filled with "can do's" instead of "feel sorry for me".
as good as it gets.......2007-05-12
the exercises are good, burt the self-discipline is absolutely necessary.

MS for Dummies makes you smarter!!.......2007-09-22
This book puts so much info into easy terms. Very easy to read and flip from chapter to chapter to find information.
I f I had this book a year ago, I could have saved myself the trouble of reading at least 6 books. Jammed with information and resources!! Great reference book!!
good,informative for newly diagnosed........2007-07-21
This book covers a wide range of topics that will help people who are new to MS,await diagnosis or family of person with MS. Some information is not covered in detail, but, overall, the book is a good place for starting the path.
Basic information in easy format.......2007-04-02
I do believe there was good intent and if you have never ready anything before on Multiple Sclerosis, you would be beyond satifistied. I don't know what I expected, but found this book a good read for those who know nothing, not for those who are well informed on thier disease. I was not pleased with most of the information in this book. I did not find anything new or of significant use that can't be found in many other books that are cheaper and already on market.

The best and most responsible update of MS.......2007-03-18
This is a book every MS patent should read. Especially those in early stages. This book is a very thorough and responsible review of MS
Excellent resource.......2001-10-03
When I was diagnosed my doctor threw 4 prescriptions at me for various steriods and other drugs and sent me on my way - wouldn't answer my questions (too busy) So off I went, got the perscriptions filled, had a nurse insert an IV and got busy. Luckily I had ordered this book in anticipation of the diagosis and it arrived as I started treatment. The first chapter is on Treatment for acute eexacerbations and it explained everything! The following chapters are: Treatments that effect long term course of the disease (the interferon drugs used in the US as well as drugs being used in other parts of the world and those under development), Symptomatic treatment of MS (fatigue, bladder issues, cognition, all the basic symptoms), Alternative therapies (some strange things mentioned here but the authors diplomatically describe what they are, id the risks and provide evaluations/conclusions). I really like this book. It helped me when my doctor could not....now I've got a better doctor, one who specializes in MS, but I still use this book to augment my understanding.
Book Description
The “thinking” disability of multiple sclerosis affects many people with the disease, who do not realize this invisible symptom — which disconnects mental pathways in the brain — is the cause of their confusion. When Jeffrey Gingold “misplaced his wife on the living room couch” and became lost while driving just blocks from his home, little did he know it was an effect of MS. Here, he documents his struggle, bringing a too-often hidden disability into the open. Written for the silent majority of MS patients who are privately dealing with the disease’s cognitive symptoms and potential disabilities, the book is also an essential resource for families and caregivers, as well as for physicians and other medical professionals who lack awareness of the issue. "Call-Outs" and "Perspectives" in each chapter help the reader recognize their own thinking difficulties, offering specific tools for coping and maintaining their vitality.
Customer Reviews:
Facing the Cognitive Challenges of MS.......2007-08-19
I was disappointed with this book which had been recommended by my local MS Society. I felt it was more like a review of the writers' personal story and did not give much practical advice. I also did not appreciate his judgments about those who choose not to use the current medications for MS, the old and tired "I have MS, it doesn't have me" line, and his complaining about anyone he felt didn't help his problem. The only aspect of this book that I found useful was the author's descriptions of the problems he has due to cognitive impairment but there was way too much useless information in between.
Treatment of a topic often ignored.......2007-08-04
This is a sensitive, well-written book which tells a personal story of the struggle to deal with some of the most challenging aspects of MS: memory loss, confusion, and difficulty thinking and working. If you have MS and are struggling with these issues, read this book!
If you thought you were losing your mind..........2007-05-15
As someone with MS, I often experience cognitive difficulties, which are quite scary. For example, I've driven down roads that I've been on countless times and find that I can't recognize where I am. The author has similar experiences. I'm grateful to Mr. Gingold for telling his story. I know what I'm experiencing is "normal" for MS. If you have similar experiences or have trouble explaining to family and friends, this book could be useful. Just keep in mind that MS is different for every 'body.' Let your medical team know your cognitive issues and don't be satisfied until you get the answers. Good Luck.
ms cobnitive.......2007-05-07
More an autobiography thn a self help book. Although I'm not really sure such a thing is possible.
So You Think You Know MS?.......2007-04-18
When you think of MS, you visualize the physical distruction of the disease. "Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis" deals with the mental challenges. I was diagosed in 1998, and encourage Gingold's book as a must read for MS patients, their families, friends, and caregivers. Easy to read, I think his is the first book I've read that makes some sense out of the senseless world of Cognitive MS symptoms, treatments and maintenance routines. I've purchased two copies so far and have two more promised to the staff at the Mellen Center (Cleveland Clinic). If you know someone with MS - this book details what life is like for us. If you have MS, this book validates that perhaps we are not alone our a vast array of symptoms. Share it with anyone who needs to understand MS.
Book Description
Multiple sclerosis is as much a mystery as it is a disease, but this chronic and often-disabling condition of the central nervous system affects an estimated 350,000 nationwide. From the first moment of her diagnosis, author Margaret Blackstone took charge and educated herself on every aspect of her condition. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with MS. She provides illustrative charts and tables, crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, and much more. The First YearMultiple Sclerosis will be an invaluable guide for everyone learning to live with a MS diagnosis.
Customer Reviews:
Good overall book; ideal for newly diagnosed........2006-10-21
I burned through this book in a weekend, so curious to know what was in store for me as a newly diagnosed person. I found it to be comforting (which I needed at the time), but light in some of the issues I have subsequently faced (such as unsympathetic employers, inability to pay for injection medicines). I'd like to see a book on the challenges of everyday life for newly diagnosed...I think I could have benefitted from someone else's experinces.
excellent.......2006-07-01
being too frugal to purchase the 2004 version, i wanted to see if first i would like it, so i bought the very inexpensive 2002 edition. these comments are focused only on the 2002 edition. blackstone writes in a very easy to understand manner. she talks about things that are most important to the person with m.s. she identifies relevant topics. at times, i wished that she would have gone into more detail on some topics. on the other hand, it is so easy to read and suggestions are very helpful. on the other hand (is that 3 now?) the outline by days and months is not terribly logical and makes it less convenient to reference information. most people with m.s. will devour this book the first weekend. it compares favorably with similar books. it was well worth the purchase price and i would recommend this book. again, i have not looked at the 2004 edition and i can't comment on it.
Must Have Book.......2006-04-02
This is the best book that I found to update you on the current research and info to help you with your MS. I wouldn't bother reading any other book
Too Light for Such a Heavy Disease.......2005-07-20
This book is simplistic and annoyingly cheerful. Perhaps I know too much about multiple sclerosis after being part of my brother's struggle for 15 years and then recently being diagnosed myself. I found Blackstone's attitude like that of a kindly old aunt. Don't worry, dearie, you can overcome this nasty little problem and live a full and happy life like anyone else.
Puleese! Tell it like it is. Tell it the way Montel Williams did in his personal experience, "Climbing Higher", which was painfully honest, realistic, enlightening and inspiring.
I am stuck with this disease and must learn to accept it, but I don't need anyone to give me false hope. The author talks about the great medications they have, but doesn't spend much time on the miserable side effects. She stresses that a cure is within the near future. I hope that is true, but the doctors told us that 15 years ago and nothing helped my brother who is recently deceased.
It's nice to have a positive attitude like my amazing brother had, but it's not nice to represent MS as if it were a condition that, if you follow the author chapter by chapter, will lead you to a wonderfully fulfilling life. Living with MS requires courage, faith, endurance and hard work as you move forward into the unknown. Maybe cheerleading works for Blackstone, but I would rather have respect, compassion and an understanding of what each of us endures on a daily basis with this cruel disease.
Truly Helpful for your first year.......2005-03-26
This book was an absolute lifesaver for me. Once I was diagnosed I purchased this book and "Coffee in the Cereal". I made it 40 pages through Coffee, before I put it in the trash. This isn't a review of that book, so I won't say anything other than... "humerous pity party".
This book, on the other hand, is great because it is not only helpful, realistic and informative... but hopeful. And, after facing a diagnosis of this magnitude, that is what we as patients need.
I really can't stress enough how helpful this book has been for me on a personal level. The book is broken out into your first year of diagnosis, with a chapter for each of the first few weeks, and from then on chapters by month. Obviously in the beginning you want information but not too much information (as you're already getting it from your doctors and your friends who think you have MD, or cancer). The author understands that and gives you the basics you need. In other words, the first few chapters of this book give you a solid foundation to understand the goofiness that is MS. And hey, any book that tells me it's ok to drink wine in the first few weeks to deal is ok in my book!
Later on, the book not only describes the theories and potential causes of the disease, but also tells you what to expect. And, unlike "Coffee" it stresses what you CAN do to help control the illness. It sresses the importance of exercise, healthy diet, and stress management.
In a nutshell this book is informative and positive and I think it should be in every MS patient's (and MS patients family's) library.

Customer Reviews:
Best book on MS and feelings I have ever read!.......2007-09-10
When I read this book I felt it was written for me! I could relate and identify to almost everything the author was saying. I wish I had extra copies to give away, it is sooo relavent to anyone. You have to get this book for yourself and your library. You won't be dissappointed!
Someone understands.......2007-09-01
As someone with MS, it's good to know that you are not the only one struggling with certain feelings and insecurities.
Great resource for MS patients.......2007-07-16
I have MS and this book was exceptional in its coverage of all aspects of my life.........I have read it and now my spouse is reading it and we plan to share it with those close to us to help in their support of our lives. Great book - very real and close to the experience of an MS patient.
Anyone having do deal with an MS diagnosis, should give "MS And Your Feelings" careful attention.......2007-06-09
In "MS And Your Feelings: Handling The Ups And Downs Of Multiple Sclerosis", medical clinical social worker Allison Shadday draws upon her more than fourteen years of experience counseling chronically ill patients and their families and her personal experience with MS (she was first diagnosed with the condition in 1995) to offer hope, inspiration, validation, and basic information for patients with MS, as well as their families and loved ones. Readers will learn about how to come to terms with an MS diagnosis; strategies for coping with fear, guilt, anger, loss, depression and isolation; tips for increasing self-esteem and developing a greater sense of emotional security and stability; how to recognize and overcome negative emotional responses to MS; steps to enhance intimacy and build support networks; how to minimize MS-related fatigue and deal with cognitive challenges; techniques to identify and manage stress triggers that can exacerbate MS symptoms; and the very latest information about new treatment options and promising research. Allison Shadday not only writes with evident authority, she is an able communicator whose total mastery of her subject is conveyed with admirable articulation to the benefit of the non-specialist general reader. Anyone having do deal with an MS diagnosis, should give "MS And Your Feelings" careful attention -- it will answer all of the basic questions and address the fundamental issues with complete clarity and an invaluable comprehensiveness.
A very interesting read.......2007-05-07
We have a friend with MS, and having seen the author on our local morning news program, I was compelled to check out this book for my own information. I feel I've become more informed and hopefully more understanding. The extensive referal section in the back is worth it on its own. Once I started seeing what a positive attitude Allison uses, I found it hard for me to put the book down. I then purchased a second copy for our friend, so that maybe we'll be able to critique it together and see if it helps her with her MS. A lot of the information also fits into dealing with any one in everyday life.
