Educator/College Counselor.......2007-08-23
Finally, a well thought out book for parents thinking about the college process! My favorite story is early in the book setting the tone for a great and helpful read. Early on, the author is clear that the process is out of control for many parents. As the Admissions Director for MIT, she makes it clear not to worry about college until it is time, rather than picking your preschool with intent to head to the IVYies....This book really tells us there is much more to learn on this road and truly this book is all about that journey in a healthier way!
Definitely worth the read.......2007-05-07
I found this book to be useful. The author had several suggestions that we had not thought of and facts we were not aware of. The whole college admissions process is way harder than when I went through it, and I would say, there is a lot of negative as far as I can see. Her book is encouraging that the process can be a positive one, if you can step out of the frenzy that most other kids and parents seem to be embroiled in. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars instead of 5 is because I felt there was some conflicting information between our school's college counselors and her and that's confusing.
Every parent of a high school junior should buy her book today........2007-05-04
Ms. Jones's advice on how the parents of high school juniors and seniors can reduce stress in the college admissions process is spot on.
I was lucky enough to receive Ms. Jones's advice when she spoke to a standing-room-only crowd at our Boston area high school. For those not so lucky, you can obtain the advice in her book, coauthored with pediatrician Kenneth R. Ginsburg.
Parents - and their children - will benefit from Jones's advice for two reasons: 1. Jones explains WHY current parents are so hyper about the admissions process (partly due to the fact that we parents are from the generation which mistakenly believes we can accomplish anything!) 2. And Jones gives practical advice on HOW each parent can reduce their child's stress in the admission process, including actions that can be easily implement right away.
Every parent of a high school junior or senior should buy her book today.
Less Stress, More Success: A New approach to Guiding Your Teen Through College Admissions and Beyond.......2007-02-13
Really grounded for both parents and teens. A must to read before any other books on college, including the guides to colleges. This gets you centered on what is important and aligns your values; then you can focus on the facts about colleges. A great duo.....a college admissions dean and a pediatrician....both care deeply about kids and speak to what they need.
One of two great books for stressed out parents.......2006-08-24
As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationship as you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

Book Description
Children don't grow up simply by adding inches and pounds-child development is a much richer mix of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. While children make progress at their own pace, parents can help (or, occasionally, hinder) them. Understanding the many ways in which your child grows is the essence of parenting, and if you appreciate the ebbs and flows of development, you can raise your child with more insight and confidence.
The Yale Child Study Center studies the life experiences of infants, children, and parents. The faculty-psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, and educators-provides the unique combination of a solid grounding in the science of child development, an understanding of a child's point of view, and an appreciation of parents' expectations and experiences.
Problems arise, of course, in every family's life. Dr. Mayes and Dr. Cohen's reassuring approach helps parents understand the nature of a problem, their role in it and response to it, and when and where to go for help with concerns such as learning disabilities, bullying, sibling rivalry, mental health and depression, anger and other difficult feelings, and divorce. This classic guide will be an incredible resource in every family bookshelf.
Customer Reviews:
good reference.......2006-06-10
This book is good if you want a book that doesn't tell you how to parent, but rather helps you understand your baby/child. With the information in this book, you can make your own educated decisions on how to parent. It's very straightforward and it's easy to use it as a reference if you have a specific question.
If you're tired of books that tell you how you should be parenting but are interested rather in your child's development, this could be for you. It makes you think and is not a manual.
For example, in the sleep section, it doesn't tell you what to do, but rather the implications of different methods of helping your kid sleep and why your kid might be having trouble or falling into certain patterns (like maybe it's just part of development). This book really respects the parent-child relationship.
A wide-ranging, eminently readable reference.......2003-05-17
The collaboration of Linda C. Mayes (Arnold Gesell Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center) and Donald J. Cohen (Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center), The Yale Child Study Center Guide To Understanding Your Child: Healthy Development From Birth To Adolescence is a superbly practical and "reader friendly" guide for parents which compiles the findings and discoveries of the Yale Child Study Center (an organization first founded in 1911) in order to assisting men and women in finding their own parenting style, achieve balance between family and work duties, and acquire ways to strengthen the ties the bind their family relationships and deal with difficult issues arising from new siblings, to school bullies, to divorce and death. The Yale Child Study Center Guide To Understanding Your Child is confidently recommended as being a wide-ranging, eminently readable reference packed with solid information for parents and caretakers of children everywhere.

Book Description
A psychologically wise guide to helping multiracial children of all ages develop confidence and a healthy understanding of their uniqueness.
"Am I black or white or am I American?" "Why don't my eyes look like yours?" "Why do people always call attention to my 'different' hair?" Helping a child understand his mixed racial background can be daunting, especially when, whether out of honest appreciation or mean-spiritedness, peers and strangers alike perceive their features to be "other." Drawing on psychological research and input from over fifty multiracial families, Does Anybody Else Look Like Me? addresses the special questions and concerns facing these families, explaining how we can best prepare multiracial children of all ages to make their way confidently in our color-conscious world. From the books and toys to use in play with young children, to advice on guiding older children toward an unflappable sense of self, Does Anybody Else Look Like Me? is the first book to outline for parents how, exactly, to deflect the objectifying attention multiracial children receive. Full of powerful stories and counsel, it is sure to become the book adoptive and birth parents of different races alike will look to for understanding as they strive to raise their children in a changing world.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting and well written resource!.......2007-03-14
I have been in an interracial relationship in the past but am currently single and sometimes dating. Sometimes I think about the possibility of marrying out of my race (I am a black-african woman) because of (and in spite of) my previous failed relationship (I guess I'm hard-headed). Over the years I have realized that multiracial situations are filled with unspoken conflicts and tensions and anxieties because this world is economically racist and exploitative... Where people live, how people live, what they do for a living all has to do with their race or ethnicity. It's really deep.
This book doesn't sugar-coat or minimize the experiences of mixed families and peoples. With these relationships the conflicts and tensions do come out in the form of hurtful, mean words, sentiments, and actions. It was so shocking to read about some of these experiences. Someone actually yelled "Eeeww!" out of a car at a mixed black (woman) white (man) family. Another child made negative comments about northern asian eyes that traumatized the author's more Japanese-looking son. There's a real lack of ACCEPTANCE with mixed peoples and couples. It's surreal!!! I think maybe people have a mental block about it or something. People are so focused on their own frame of reference.
The book is good because her writing is really honest and intelligent. She has wonderfully organized chapters including one on improving the education curriculum to be more accepting of multiracial families. I am getting my teacher certification in the next year so this book gave me info that will help me understand the backgrounds of some of my future students. There is a lot of good info on the little things I never knew about like how some very young mixed kids identify race with gender. The chapter on Adolescence delves into the STEPS TO IDENTITY-FORMATION, dating, and more. I recommend it!
Highly recommend.......2006-05-16
As the mother of 4 beautiful biracial children, I was delighted to find this intelligent, realistic book. My children are often asked "What are you?" and attempts are made to label them as Arabic, Latin, Greek,Black, Italian, etc, etc. This makes it difficult for them when they are at ages where all of us were trying to "find ourselves". My daughter has also had a difficult time, often meeting women who instantly dislike her based on her appearance alone. This book was refreshing and helped me to realize others go thru the same. I was amazed at the amount of research and fact finding this author included. The everyday anecdotes was also most truthful, speaking from personal experience. great find for anyone who knows, loves, interacts with those of more than 1 race!!
Well Written and Informative Guide.......2006-03-21
Being a member of a multi-ethnic family myself, I purchased this book to help teach some people in my life what it is like to grow up in such a family.
This book has been an excellent resource because it touches on the many topics involved including terminology, answering the "What are you? question, dating, etc...
The author of the book did alot of research including interviewing members of many different multi-racial and bi-racial families.
This book focuses on empowering members of multi-racial and bi-racial families to be proud of who they are and gives advice about how to handle in a positive light some of the negative situations they may encounter. The book particularly focuses on helping to raise multi-racial and bi-racial children who are happy, well adjusted, and have high self-esteem.
I highly recommend this book.
excellent book for parents.......2003-11-30
Thank goodness this isn't another academic tome dealing with racial tensions and ethnicity in the U.S. Finally, we have a book geared for parents that is intelligent, informed and useful. The scripts alone--Ms. Nakazawa's suggestions for what to say to children in response to (or in anticipation of) challenging situations--are worth the price of the book. I know of at least one school that is giving away free copies of this book to all the parents of multiracial and transracially adoptive children in their school. I hope, for the sake of our children, that more schools will get the word out about this book.
Interesting.......2003-10-04
This book was very well-intentioned. For the most part, I found it interesting and informative, but I wouldn't say that this book fully teased out the implications of what it means to have a multi-racial child. I didn't give this book five stars because I found it seemed to lack direction. This book was quite anecdotal, and lacked sophisticated nuance and understanding in ethnic identity. This book was obviously written from the point of a parent versus an academic who might interrogate and investigate race and ethnicity on a different level.

A great book that really gives you step by step ideas on how to encourage language. You can apply these ideas to children with Down Syndrome, as well as typically developing children with language delays.
A great resource for parents and teachers.......2002-03-15
Children with Down Syndrome are often delayed in developing speech but can compensate for this delay by using sign language and other skills in a technique called Total Communication. This guide provides a wealth of information about speech and language development in children with Down syndrome. Parents learn what to expect as communication skills progress from infancy through early adolescence, how Down syndrome can affect those skills, and what they can do to maximize their child's potential in this crucial area of development. This book was recommended by our son's speech therapist.

Book Description
Research has shown that very young children can learn sign language before they learn to speak. Teach Your Tot to Sign: The Parents’ Guide to American Sign Language provides parents and teachers the opportunity to teach more than 500 basic American Sign Language (ASL) signs to their infants, toddlers, and young children. Hearing children, deaf children, and children with special needs can benefit from learning the elementary signs chosen for this handy pocket-size book. Young children who can communicate using simple signs become less frustrated and also bond in a special way with their parents. In teaching ASL to parents of toddlers and preschool teachers, author Stacy A. Thompson recognized the need for a book that could be used at home and in the classroom. Her book features fundamental signs of great appeal to young children and concise instructions on how to sign, including the critical importance of facial expression.
Teach Your Tot to Sign anticipates all of the common desires and interests of young children — food, pets, planes, trains, cars, and boats, games, holidays, vegetables, family — in short, nearly everything. Reflecting children’s endless curiosity, the vocabulary chosen ranges from signs for “baby,” “broken,” “clown,” “dinosaur,” “firefighter,” “gentle,” “hot,” “hurt,” “ketchup,” “pacifier,” “rooster,” “sad,” “spaghetti,” “wagon,” “water,” “wet,” to “you’re welcome,” and even “McDonalds.” This lively assortment of signs will help every child convey earlier in their development their thoughts, feelings, and desires to their parents and teachers.
Customer Reviews:
Great except for food.......2007-08-10
This book is so helpful I carry it in our "Diaper" bag. (We actually use elimination communication so our baby hasn't used diapers since 11 weeks, but we still call it our diaper bag. See Potty Whispering: The Gentle Art of Infant Potty Training) I frequently pull this book out when my son needs a word. He is 19 months and knows about 70 signs. He even signs in his sleep (I wonder what he was dreaming the night he was signing "paper.") This is the most comprehensive signing book I have found. Lots of good kid words--like yogurt and cracker--that I couldn't find anywhere else. My biggest complaint about this book (and why only 4 stars) is the food words. It mainly has sweet based foods (and even signs for McDonald's.) There are limited fruits, veggies, and other healthy foods. So I also carry Fruits & Vegetables (Beginning Sign Language Series)Also, despite the great number of words in here, it is not totally comprehensive. It doesn't have the word "key." Every toddler loves keys so I'm not sure why that's missing. I'd love it if there was a website where I could recommend words for future editions.
For those of you uncertain about using sign as much as we do, it has really made having a toddler much simpler. He can tell stories about the time the dog had the bird in its mouth and we got the bird from the dog and took the bird outside. When he dropped his toy into a hole in the floorboards, his signing conveyed to me what had happened (since I didn't witness it.) When he got cactus thorns in his hands and was, naturally, screaming as I took them out, he signed "water." I got him a drink of water and he calmed down. Without the ability to make that request, he would have kept screaming (I never would have thought to give him water.) Some people have questioned if sign language at our level will delay speech. I asked a developmental pediatrician about that. She considers children who sign bi-lingual. Bi-lingual children often do have slight delays in their speech. However, the brain development that occurs is so beneficial that it is better for the children. At 19 months our son has his 70 signed words and about 20 spoken words. He spends much of each day repeating a verbal word he is just now learning (dishes is one of his favorites.)
Easy to understand and follow.......2007-05-07
I bought this book to help me with simple signs to teach children under 2 years old who are not hearing impaired. I found the alphabetical listing made it easy to find words I wanted to use and the simple illustration made sure I was making the sign correctly. I think this book would work very well for someone wanting to learn basic signs for young children whether hearing impaired or not.
Wonderful Signing Starter Book.......2007-03-24
We have been doing sign language with both of our babies since around 6 mos of age, and this book has been priceless. Very easy to use, very informative.
Excellent.......2007-03-09
This book is basically a ASL dictionary. It is excellent for looking up signs for young child related items, instead of making up signs. I keep my copy in the diaper bag for easy reference in and out of the house. I recommend it to anyone trying to teach a young child ASL sign language.
Great reference guide.......2007-02-14
This is a great reference guide to everyday signs. Exactly what I was looking for to look up, learn and refresh daily used signs. It's alphabetical with letters and words, perfect for quickly looking up the sign you want to use. The signs are in picture form as well as an explanation of the proper action of the hand for signing. Quick, easy, fast and straightforward.

Book Description
A "Girlfriend's Guide" for the new millennium-the one book every working gal needs to read before, during, and after she experiences new motherhood
You're an independent career woman suddenly dropped into the chaos of Babyville. You have a newborn to care for, three months (if you're lucky) of unstructured time to fill, a work decision to make (to go back full-time? part-time? job share?), childcare to acquire, and family finances to balance. You need someone to make you laugh during the hard times, a doctor to call in the middle of the night, and a good career counselor to boot.
Never fear! Sure to become the gold standard resource during that crazy first year, The Working Gal's Guide to Babyville combines stories and sisterly advice from the trenches, infant care information and tips from a pediatrician, and career and budget guidance from a pro. From getting baby to sleep through the night to making the most of maternity leave, from weighing work options to finding childcare, from networking with new parents to emotionally transitioning from "Ms. Independent to Mom," it offers desperately needed, easy-to-execute strategies and expert solutions on all manner of Year One issues. The essential guidebook for today's busy career moms, it's every bit as hip, smart, and savvy as the women who'll be reading it.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-05
I picked up this book without much research/reading reviews, but was so happy I was lucky with this one. This book is very informative and is funny in tackling tough issues. I particularly enjoyed the parts of the book on making the most of maternity leave, which had useful advice for not feeling alienated or frustrated in the early days. Great for any smart, busy woman who is worried about her new life as a mom!
For women who work in white collar jobs, this is for you!.......2007-07-10
The audience this book is aimed at, to me, seems to be mothers that want to go back to work, but really don't have to. On the plus side, there are great guidelines for dealing with separation anxiety and breastfeeding in public. There is even a highly detailed chapter on how to hire a nanny and get green card clearance. To me, the book is only addressing white collar working women who, honestly, would not suffer much if they'd just stay home and put the same energy into raising their children instead of their tax bracket. So, in the end I give the book an "O.K." rating because of the slanted way it's written. In a way, it's offensive to me.
Straightforward Advice.......2007-05-13
Thought this book was a real help. The author uses great everyday examples when transitioning between topics and illustrating points. Appreciated that the author used a medical professional to aid her in delivering some information. I have read other books where advice was dispensed, and I know my doctor would not agree.
This book saved my life!.......2007-03-30
As a working mom, I was so relieved to find this book that addressed perfectly what I was feeling after my son was born. It really helps you to get through maternity leave. This is great for ANY new mom. But as a working mom, it was exactly what I needed.
A Must Read for Working Moms-to-Be.......2006-12-04
This is the best book I read during my pregnancy/new Mom period. I bought this book while I was 7 months pregnant and so tired of the preachy tone of most of the other pregnancy and baby books that I had read. Yes, this book has great advice on sleeping, feeding, etc, but even more impressively, this book (a) talks about issues that no other books talk about, like reconciling your old self image with your new "Mom" image and (b) tackles issues from deciding between breastfeeding and bottle feeding to deciding whether to return to work in a helpful way that doesn't have any particular agenda. The book is practical, funny, extremely readable, and one that I will recommend to all of my friends.
