Busy parents of toddlers to teens will get a lot out of Nancy Samalin's Loving Without Spoiling. The book offers 100 mini how-to chapters on a vast array of parenting issues, such as stopping whining, streamlining morning routines, encouraging honesty, and making an uninterrupted phone call. The information is not in-depth and is occasionally culled from other parenting tomes, but the book is an easy read and an excellent jumping-off point for parents looking for new solutions to any number of age-old problems.

Samalin has been leading parenting workshops for the past 25 years. Many examples and much of the good advice presented in the book are drawn from the experience of the parents in these classes, as well as from her own family. Samalin recognizes the intense love that leads parents to make their children happy at the risk of encouraging self-centered, spoiled, even bratty behavior. Loving Without Spoiling focuses on helping parents to exercise their authority and raise well-behaved children without being too strict or squashing a child's spirit. Samalin's frequent advice is for parents to let children take responsibility for themselves, particularly in managing their relationships with siblings and friends, as well as in hot-button arenas like eating and doing homework. Samalin advocates letting children make their own food choices, do their own homework, and learn from experience. She doesn't counsel parents to let children be in charge, but rather reminds us that making mistakes is a necessary part of learning and that fostering learning is a tremendous part of a parent's job. --Jennifer Lindsay

5 out of 5 stars Support and specifics.......2006-11-12

Sometimes I read parenting books for inspiration, other times for nitty-gritty advice. In a tone that's respectful of parents as well as children, Samalin delivers both. She is terrific at empathizing with a parent's perspective (she understands what it's like to be an overwhelmed parent), yet keeps the child's well-being in clear focus. I appreciate the specific, solution-oriented advice (for setting limits while remaining supportive of your child, for example), as well as the pat on the back from this friendly, often humorous author. As usual, Samalin contributes to the fun of becoming a well educated parent.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RELIEF!.......2006-11-04

Finally, a book I can actually use everyday! So many parenting books are great "in theory" but never work in practice. Nancy Samalin's book, Loving without Spoiling, saves my family from upset on a daily basis. I read parts of it over and over again, and it never fails to amaze me. I especially follow the "pick your battles" advice--this is so effective. Her simple suggestions to change the way you phrase requests are incredibly effective!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what the title says...and it works!.......2003-11-17

I read this book a few months ago and immediately took it to heart. It absolutely changed the way I think about discipline. The most interesting thing is that recently, I picked it up to browse through again, and was amazed at all the thoughts from the book that I have adopted as my own. So many tips I've used...so many anecdotes I've repeated to friends...so much GOOD STUFF that I've internalized since I read it the first time.

My husband read the book, too. He has for the past 4 years been a believer in the style of discipline promoted by John Rosemond: very authoritarian and a strict disciplinarian of the old school, "just like your grandmother." This style has become very popular lately, as American children seem to be more insolent, violent and disrespectful than ever before. A reversion to that old-time discipline seems, at first blush, to be the answer.

Although we certainly want our children to be well-behaved and respectful, we also want them to be happy and well-adjusted, not sneaky and defiant. After reading Samalin's thoughtful book, my husband and I have decided that we agree with Rosemond's goals, but not his methods. Samalin will give you options, and ways to be an authoritative parent, instead of an authoritarian one. THAT INSIGHT ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK, and there are many more.

I've never found one parenting book that has all the answers. In fact, the longer I'm a parent, the more convinced I am that there are no clear-cut instructions on discipline that are right for every child. But this book -- with its wonderful anecdotes, sample dialogues and calm, pragmatic suggestions -- is the one book I recommend above all others. I certainly wish my parents had read it.

5 out of 5 stars The best quick reference book on parenting.......2003-08-18

This book has become my most often referenced parenting book. Its format is ideal for 3-minute refresher courses on strategies. Today, I just re-read "End Morning Madness" and "Jump-Start the Dawdler" to help get ready for the first week of school. When you feel like there must be a better way to deal with a situation, but you are too stressed, distracted, or busy to calmly think it through, give yourself a time-out and run for this book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for parents.......2003-08-05

This is the book I would like to hand every new parent as they begin their journey. Nancy Samalin has provided a map for parents to help them navigate the bumps and blind curves on the road to raising happy, responsible children. Experienced parents will recognize and appreciate the jewels of wisdom in this practical and wise guide to parenting.

Book Description

How do we strengthen our children's souls?

How do we fortify them with a sense of obligation, hope, faith, trust, and a burning desire to achieve?

In this wise and important book, you will discover unlimited answers that are yours for the taking—the keys to raising children with strong values and a positive sense of purpose and identity.

Today's children—many of them blessed with more material wealth and education than any generation before—greet the world with a sense of uneasiness at best, and, at worst, a sense of despair. In The Ties That Bind, Dr. Joyce Ladner, an eminent sociologist, shows how we can empower more children with the self-confidence that will sustain them throughout their lives.

Keeping the promise of her own tradition-rich Mississippi upbringing, Dr. Ladner passes on the timeless treasure of African American values. A leading scholar and activist, she reveals how each generation taught the next a vital set of lessons in values. Drawing insight from everyday heroes, family stories, and personal experiences as a mother of a growing son, she brings those lessons to life and shapes them for our times.

Step by step, she teaches the authentic principles of the historic black value system. Finally, she demonstrates how you can pass on this legacy in a way that children will absorb through dozens of simple, everyday activities for home, church, school, and community life.

The Ties That Bind will help you give your children the foundation they need through their growing years and beyond. Let this enriching book with its healing lessons guide and nourish your family.

"A superb book reminding us of the critical need to impart to our children the traditional values that have sustained our people through centuries of struggle and pain. We forget or ignore all that we have long known at our peril, for these principles are our heritage and our hope for the future." —Marian Wright Edelman President, The Children's Defense Fund.

"A practical guide for today, and for a better tomorrow. Drawing from a rich personal and family history, as well as from over 30 years of academic endeavor, Dr. Ladner establishes the basic principles of the African American value system. If you care about African American people, then you must read this book." —Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole former President, Spelman College.

"A wonderful book. Evocative of my own childhood and upbringing, it recalls and catalogues those homey virtues that we need to figure out how to recapture in these different and dangerous times. Dr. Ladner's prescriptions are a major step in that direction." —William Raspberry The Washington Post.

"A crucial template for parents, youth workers, educators, and community groups working closely with young people. It outlines the essential elements necessary to center our youth and promote their healthy development and well-being." —Hugh B. Price President, National Urban League.

"A masterpiece of scholarship . . . drawing on history and culture, on biography and family studies, economics, politics, sociology, and religion." —Andrew Billingsley Professor, University of South Carolina.

"An inspirational and compelling book. Everyone committed to preserving African American values should read it. Lost values lead to lost children. Dr. Ladner offers practical guidance to ensure that black children thrive as bearers of our proud legacy. The Ties That Bind is a must for your home library." —Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D. Harvard Medical School.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2000-07-23

"The Ties That Bind" is an exemplary book. It is filled with rewarding guidelines that should be used daily. "The Ties That Bind" is a drawing force to what once was an accepted way of life and guidance in our families.

Dr. Ladner has touched upon some important aspects in the rearing of our children. As Proverbs 22:6 notes, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

For those who read "The Ties That Binds," you will understand that indeed there are values in life and we should want to instill these worthwhile values in not just our children's lives, but we should make sure they are embedded in our own lives.

"The Ties That Bind" is a rewarding book. It is a book worth reading. A book worth sharing with our friends and loved ones. "The Ties That Bind" is extraordinary!

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Joyce Ladner's book is a must read for all parents........1999-05-23

Dr. Ladner's book is an excellent presentation of ways to keep the family together. The traditional values that families imparted many years ago are essential today and must be called upon to deal with the negative impact of environment. This scholarly written book is inspirational and compelling. Dr. Ladner has effectively outlined strategies to help all parents deal with the difficult task of being a parent. I would encourage all parents to purchase this book and share the many lessons with family members and children.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly written, thought-provoking and seminal volume.......1999-03-03

"I just don't understand..." is the lament I've heard muttered over and over by the family and friends of many middle-class youth who have gotten into serious trouble in school, with the law, with drugs or who just seem to flounder hopelessly without any sense of direction. Whether this comment is uttered in reference to someone who is in his or her early teens or who is a young adult, a common thread exists. Invariably, the youth are bright and have parents who have gone to great effort and considerable expense to provide every social, cultural and economic advantage they could afford for their offspring.

In The Ties That Bind, Joyce Ladner has bored right to the core of the problem. She has identified the critical mistakes that we have made in our drive to provide our children with everything. What we have not always provided, though, are those "timeless values" that our parents drilled into us. In this dynamic book, Dr. Ladner doesn't just point out the problem - drawing on her own experiences, she has been able to supply concrete examples and explicit directions for raising self-assured and fully functioning youth. This is a must-read book for every parent!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful thought provoking read.......1999-01-13

The Ties That Bind is a timeless book that couldn't have picked a better time to be published. If one is looking for a title that deals with tangible yet spiritualy based bits of wisdom, lessons for family bonding and other ways to combat the growing feelings of isolation and moral decay in our world, this title is a must read that will be cherished and handed down from generation to generation. If you are black, white, male, female, married or not, The Ties That Bind will have a message for you in its pages.

Book Description

Knowing how to fold a paper airplane can make you a better parent!

Well, maybe not better, but you’ll certainly have more fun with your children, who understandably assume that you know how to do just about everything. If they only knew!

Catch a Fish, Throw a Ball, Fly a Kite is for parents who want to teach their children what they really want to learn--even the skills you never mastered or haven't practiced in a few decades. This book contains clear, simple, step-by-step instructions for teaching more than twenty little life skills that every child should know, including how to:

• Work a yo-yo
• Build a fire
• Eat with chopsticks
• Skip a stone
• Fly a homemade kite
• Throw a Frisbee

While you teach your children, you get to learn the skills too, or at the very least improve on them. Activities range from practical, like locating the constellations, to completely frivolous fun, like turning a blade of grass into a musical instrument. Some are simple enough for four-year-olds, and others will appeal to the most jaded adolescent. Each skill is illustrated and is rounded out with fascinating trivia (did you know that the world’s largest sand castle measured six stories high?) or funny jokes. Age-appropriate information is given for each skill, but they all have one thing in common: You and your kids can do them together!

5 out of 5 stars What every "old fashioned" parent needs!.......2006-07-06

This book is great- filled with 21 things that in the "old days" were just assumed everyone learned and knew. Now, this book is teaching my husband a few things HE didn't even know how to do, and he's showing them all to our daughter.
It's great for those old fashioned parents where XBOX & GameBoy do not rule your household.
Made a great Father's day gift (even though my husband hasn't even opened a book since College!).

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone with kids..........2004-10-21

I have a 4 year old. My father never spent much time with us doing stuff. Only around holidays. I learned to ride a bike by falling down. This guy actually found out there is a good way to teach kids to ride in one day! And he breaks down how to teach a scared kid how to throw a ball into managable steps. A MUST have for every parent. Most of the activities are suited for 5-8 year olds though, so my daughter is still a bit young. But I keep it near the front door for reference on the outside activity days. I will let you all know how the bike riding training goes.

I rate this a 5 out of 5. Very useful, easy to read, and a good reference that I will pick up again and again.

4 out of 5 stars A Village of teachers.......2004-07-22

I was so excited as I read through the pages of Catch a Fish. My boys and I are going to have so much fun together in the years to come. But it will take a village to teach my boys all the activities in this book! I read the exhaustive instructions on fishing. It was obvious Lee loves it, but I never will. So call all your village people to pony up and promise to teach the kids something! The memories made while learning are worth more than the skills themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and well written.......2004-07-13

This is a wonderful little guide, including not only the basics of 21 great things to do with children of various ages, but an important perspective on how to teach those things.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and Fun for anyone who loves kids.......2004-06-25

Dr. Jeffrey Lee has two daughters who have been granted the benefit of his youthful interest in being, as he puts it, an "all-American boy". Dr. Lee's Chinese born father had no way of knowing how to, say, throw a baseball but in the face of his four sons' interests read up on the subject and gamefully worked his way through. Lee thought he'd have it easier the first time he set out to teach his daughter something and he made her cry. But she eventually learned and they had fun together, but that beginning wasn't terribly auspicious. And so Lee wrote this book, so that we wouldn't repeat his mistakes but rather could have fun from the start.

In this volume that Dr. Lee offers step by step and well-illustrated instructions on how to make and fly a kite, bake bread, catch a fish, build a fire, make a pie, juggle, skip a rock and more. He notes early on that one doesn't need to be an expert to be a good teacher, a comment designed to calm adult fears of not being "good enough". Each chapter includes a briefing on what to know before you start, what equipment/materia is needed, a section on troubleshooting and even some jokes or theme-related funny stories and trivia.

This is a wonderful book for any adult who wants to enjoy the company of a child while relearning and/or teaching these ever so critical "life skills". Your kids already think you know everything, why not have a little fun?

Book Description

Recalling his growing-up years in Los Angeles following World War II, author James Pratt describes twelve lessons he learned from observing his father, an unpretentious and uneducated man who acquired little of this world's wealth but who lived an honorable life. "For some, these twelve virtues may seem antiquated, out of date, or hopelessly provincial," writes Pratt. "I don't see it that way. What my father practiced and conveyed to me were principles that made it possible for children to grow up in a stable, two-parent home, where there was a widely accepted code of decency, honesty, honor, and patriotism." This book recalls simpler times, when Southern California was still filled with dusty little towns and when a mand could have purchased the bean fields that have become LAX for $5 an acre - if he had somehow had five dollars. Readers will enjoy this loving retrospective, a fitting tribute to dads everywhere.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dad the Man Who Lied to Save the Planet.......2003-09-13

As an already established fan of James Michael Pratt's novels, I looked forward to the release of this non-fiction book. The advice that Grant Pratt gave his son was simple. But the simpleness is what makes it so universal. Not only was the book humorous but deeply insightful. Some of my favorite "virtues" include, "It's better to be kind than right," and "Remember, Son--There's no substitute for a good name." The words and traditions we pass onto our children will never leave them. Mr. Pratt's book reminds us of the truly important elements of life. And with the second anniversary of 9/11 just behind us, I think we'd all agree that we should, "Express your love while time is on your side. In the end, it will be the only thing that matters."

5 out of 5 stars Revealing the values of "The Greatest Generation".......2003-05-21

They suffered the greatest economic depression in America's history only to come out of it and take on the Nazi's and Imperial Japan. This book, an homage to James Michael Pratt's father, reveals ten core values which shaped his father's generation and helped them to take on and defeat two of the greatest challenges which have faced America.

With wry humor, Pratt reveals life principles which are both timely and timeless. A bargain at any price, reading "Dad" is nourishment to the soul. It is an ideal book for those who lived through this era, were raised by "The Greatest Generation" or, most importantly, would like to transmit these important values to their children.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for mothers and grandmothers. Makes a beautiful gift!.......2006-02-07

I have four daughters and this book has been on my bedside table since it was given to me by a friend. The book is not only beautiful, but the writing is heartwarming and interesting too. This is not your average "motherhood is wonderful - read my story" book. This collection is full of stories, peoms, photos, art, information about other cultures, and wisdom. I have loved it and given it many times as a gift to new mothers, old mothers, and many of my kid's teachers!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful resource for new moms and old moms alike.......2000-09-10

I wasn't a 'new mom' when i read this book, but found it helpful when doing research for a birthing ritual for a friend...it reveals so many views of impending motherhood from many different cultures...very informative and very touching. I wish i'd had it when i first found out i was pregnant!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-05-09

This book is a rare gem. It compiles many famous writers' comments concerning pregnancy and birth. It portrays pregnancy and birth as beautiful and spiritual.

It also includes different spiritual perscpectives on the different phases of pregnancy and birth. It incudes Native American, Celtic, Polynesian,...poems that describe pregancy and birth.

I used this book to find a poem for my sons birth announcement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Christian Parents.......2007-05-12

This is the best book of biblical names I have found yet. It includes all the classics plus some lesser known names all found in the Old and New Testament. It tells how to pronounce each name, the language or cultural origin of the name, the meaning, the spiritual connotation, and my favorite - related names and nicknames which help you be a little more creative with the more common Christian names. You also get the scriptural story that the name comes from and other information such as famous people who share the name. This is a great resource for parents who desire a Christian name for their child and who want a lot of options.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Practical Spiritual Devotional.......2005-08-11

I have read many devotionals that are geared toward moms and not one has exhibited the practicality and truth that this one does. In simple terms and examples that a busy mom can relate to. This book seeks to encourage and remind us that life happens one day at a time and everyday is a different circumstance each with its own needs.
At the end of each daily devotional the book offers insight on:
-what we can do to better our goals as mothers
    -how to apply this
-several scripture references that support the lecture read.

I am a single mom of two. An 11 mth old and a 5 year old. The phrase "Time is of the essence." never really had so much meaning until now.
This book is a quick great way to end my night and prepare my heart to open up in prayer before closing the chapter of my day.

    Cute little book!!!
You can also use all the insight after each devotional to write a bible study or class if you wanted to.
    Enjoy :)
