Book Description
A master class in family therapy—now updated with an additional ten years' case experience
Few people have had as profound an impact on the theory and practice of family therapy as Salvador Minuchin. As one commentator put it, "Memories of his classic sessions have become the standard against which therapists judge their own best work." This new edition of the classic, Mastering Family Therapy, offers beginners and experienced practitioners alike the opportunity to learn the art and science of family therapy under this pioneering clinician and teacher.
In elegant clinical interplays, Minuchin, his colleagues Wai-Yung Lee and George Simon, and eight advanced students provide answers to such critical questions as:
- What does it take to master the art of family therapy?
- How do I create an effective personal style?
- How can I become an instrument for growth for troubled families?
This updated Second Edition features:
- An overview and critique of new models of treatment in the field, especially evidence-based models of family treatment
- New case material highlighting the impact of societal context on families
- Minuchin's conceptualization of a four-step process of family assessment, including how history can impact current family functioning
A new and thoroughly revised version of the classic text, Mastering Family Therapy, Second Edition is essential reading for all those who practice, study, or teach family therapy.
Book Description
Beset by chronic pain, Phillip Aronson found himself battling the crippling effects of clinical depression. For his wife Emme, it was one of the toughest challenges she would ever face. Told in their own voices, this is the true story of a couple who endured the ravages of clinical depression together, and emerged stronger and more in love than before. It is the story of Phillip, whose family had a history of the illness-and of Emme, who remained by his side even when their world seemed to be falling apart. But most of all, it is a story of hope for those who suffer from clinical depression, as well as their loved ones.

Great Book About Depression.......2007-06-09
This was a very well written book and very hard to put down. He hit the nail on the head when describing what it feels like to be beyond the pit of hell of depression. The only part that saddens me is that there was never any blame put on the flouroquinolone antibiotics, pain killers, Ambien and Xanax as possible causes of this black hole depression. They are all central nervous system depressants and I'd blame them before I blamed 9/11 and the other life stressors. I wish he and Emme would have researched the dangers of these drugs and they would have found that they often cause people to spiral into mental illness. Stopping and starting psychiatric drugs without slowly tapering also sends the brain into chaos, and leads to treatment resistant clinical depression. Phil, please don't ever think you can simply stop your medications once you believe you are well. You must taper them over periods of months and even years, or your depression will surely return ten-fold and be harder to treat than ever before.
Thanks for sharing your story and dampening the stigma of depression.
Mirrors my experience almost to the letter!.......2007-06-01
I found out about this book when watching Oprah, and bought it the next day.
After living with a depressed husband since January 2006, I finally found a book that gives me insight into how he is feeling and validation for many of my feelings. So much of this book is exactly what we have been going through although the ending to our journey has not surfaced as yet. I wish I could sit down and talk with the Aronsons, especially to thank them for sharing their horrific experience so honestly.
I have read many, many, many books about depression in the last year and a half, the only other one I would recommend is "When Someone You Love is Depressed" by Laura Rosen, Ph D. and Xavier Amador, Ph.D.

Very informative and honest.......2007-02-20
This unique book gives insight from both the patient and caregiver's perspective on Phil Aronson's bout with major clinical depression. While their story was difficult for them to live through, as you read through the book it becomes obvious that this book would not have been written if Phil's depression had been "ordinary" and not lasted so long. Out of their ashes has come the fruit of hope for the rest of us. As of now this is easily one of the top five books available for men with depression.

LITERAL LIFE SAVER from Mirel of Ca........2007-01-13
This book is a literal life saver. I had just finished reading this book about a week ago. It was an opportunity to learn first hand what a person experiencing clilnical depression feels and acts on.
Then, I got an urgent call from my neighbor -- she had just received a desperate phone call from her daughter-in-law. My friend's son tried to leave their apartment and said he planned to jump off the bridge. My friend was shaking and crying out of control. I ran back to my apartment, grabbed Phillip and Emme's book. I told her about the book and there was hope for her son.
We quickly consulted the resource references in the book for help for this young couple. I am confident they will now be able to get the guidance they need to work through this crisis.
I want to express a heartfelt thank you, Phillip and Emme, for showing the way to other people to save the life of a loved one, or someone they don't even know personally. This book is an outstanding contribution to the world.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!.......2006-12-30
I could not put this book down. It is an insightful, honest account of a couple's experience to the depths and back up again. It is written in such an engaging manner that you just have to keep reading until you finish. This book gives strength and encouragement to anyone touched by depression, or any other major life struggle. (and who hasn't??) Thank you to Phil and Emme for bringing this topic out into the open and to the front burner. We can all benefit from this wonderful book!!!

Just a few months shy of his 20th anniversary at RCA, Sandy MacGregor got his pink slip. Once the shock wore off, he and his wife, Marilyn J. Abraham, then a vice president and editor at Simon & Schuster, did what any rational couple with more than fifty-two combined years on the corporate fast track would do: they traded in the boardroom for the open road and embarked on a four-month trek across America. First We Quit Our Jobs is Abraham's account of their odyssey. Granted, a Winnebago was not their first choice when the bad news came, but after an attempt to buy a small publishing company in New England fell through, MacGregor and Abraham packed their bags and went in search of their destiny.
Part travelogue, part meditation, and part guide to "the road not taken," First We Quit Our Jobs is a charmingly written chronicle of discovery. As MacGregor and Abrahams began to depart from the way they'd always assumed their lives would go, they found the freedom to shape the way they'd like their lives to be.
Book Description
What happens when two executives leave their jobs, friends, and the city behind to hit the road in a twenty-seven foot RV? America the beautiful becomes a place of sights, foods, people, memories, and a little wisdom.
After fifty-two combined years in the corporate fast lane, Marilyn Abraham and her husband, Sandy MacGregor, embarked on an adventure that every work-driven professional dreams about but hardly ever has the courage to realize. They quit their jobs and hit the road in order to retrain themselves in the art of living. For almost a year, the couple traveled nearly 20,000 miles to thirty-one states, including Washington, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Tennessee, and through seven Canadian provinces to Alaska, in the hulking RV they named Sue.
More than just a travelogue, First We Quit Our Jobs is the story of recreating one's life and discovering what is real, what is true, and what is important. Filled with visions of Americana, this personal and touching memoir traces the author's search for meaning in this modern day.

heaven on the road.......2007-03-27
A very enjoyable read of a couple's escape from New York, demanding jobs and responsibility, to a vacation on wheels. Recommended.
Enjoyable read.......2005-09-03
This is a nicely written account of two people quitting their jobs and traveling accross the country and into Canada and Alaska. This is not a book to use as a reference source for full-timing in your RV, but it did have a few tips and is an enjoyable book to read.
Full time RVing - best choice we ever make.......2005-02-15
We loved the book title and a great book, it is hard to do when we and most people think our / their lives are the job and career. It takes a force change like a job layoff like us to pick up the new adventure. We created ours and so can anyone who want it.
It does take courage and think out of the box. The life style is not for everyone. But for those who has the wander spirit, this is the only way to live. Forget the negative thoughts that you cannot do it. Just like anything else, plan and execute.
Power vacationing.......2004-04-04
This book is more like a glorified vacation than a real life changing tale. Working in high stress, high paying jobs with incomes to match; I do not think these folk have much to tell the rest of us. Sure they can go buy that Class A and have a fine time for a few months. Why not, it is well within their means. Shut the house on the lake for a while; take a few months to see the US. Have a great time. For most of the population quitting jobs and traveling for several months would be a huge undertaking, Many people go entire lives, until retirement without the means to walk away, from their employment, leave their house vacant and travel. I do not think this author has much useful advice for the average person. If you want a book on an RV journey, read Barb Thacker or Sharlene Minshall or Steels on Wheels or Ray Parker. If you want a pleasant read about a rather extensive vacation, buy this book. The writing is pleasant, the story is enjoyable, and I do not regret reading the book. Nonetheless I did have a feeling I was adding to an already hefty bank account. The author is from the publishing field and knew how to turn this trip into a paying venture.
Yuppies travel West.......2002-01-21
I picked this book up at Borders', intrigued by the title and happy to take an armchair vacation across the west. While I enjoyed their travels, sympathized with their need to abandon the corporate world, I must admit I was a bit nauseated by the replacement of one chic place for another (Santa Fe). It wasn't like they had exactly abandonned or developed new life styles and an appreciation of the "simpler life." Sure, they were giving up a "Manhattan high stressed life" -- after all it was killing them. Who could live that world very long? But their materialistic superficial values continued. They still live in a glossy unreal yuppie world (Santa Fe). However, on the up side, I did enjoy their travels with all the comforts of home built in.

Book Description
Intimate relationships form one of the basic elements of human interaction, yet they certainly defy easy explanations. Drawing on the latest research in areas ranging from social psychology to biology and anthropology, combined with the experiences of therapists and other observers of human behavior, the authors of this volume provide a remarkable synthesis of theories and data that make the best attempt so far at explaining the mysteries of love, intimacy, and relationships. Using a style that draws students into the ongoing inquiry into how intimate relationships work, Love and Intimate Relationships investigates the life cycle of relationships, influences that affect them, theories behind them, and ways to improve them. Dozens of stories from students themselves, case examples, and over 150 tables, figures, and cartoons help bring the material alive.
The book is also unique in exploring aspects of human relationships not covered in other textbooks on the subject. Norman Brown and Ellen outcomes of divorce; to the relationship issues confronting children of divorce, an ever-growing percentage of today's young adults; and to developmental, interpersonal, and social aspects of homosexual relationships. It also explores biosocial theories of human relationships, using the latest research in biology, evolutionary psychology, and interdisciplinary human sciences. Finally, a biosocial explanation of affective dynamics furnishes keys to understanding male and female socialization, shyness and infatuation, jealousy, emotional disconnection, anger, and violence.
Together, these elements help bring the complex issues surrounding intimate relations into focus for students from diverse backgrounds. The multidisciplinary perspective of the textbook make it ideal for courses in psychology, marriage and family studies, communications studies, and interpersonal relationships.

Next I'd like a movie made from this book.......2006-09-20
I'm so glad a friend told me about this book. I love the paintings - so clear and fresh; simplicity with depth of meaning.
It is gratifying that the author was able to compile such a detailed record of the Roerich's life, work and travels. I enjoyed traveling in my imagination by way of the diary entries - and to places I would NOT want to endure physically - 17,000 foot mountains, for example.
The entire book stretches my imagination - that Helena received so much direction and information in non-physical ways, all the miracles of perfect timing, the pull of India and how they overcame obstacles to visit and live there.
Truly it reads like a novel for which a movie script will be written - their story is so rich, their lives so full of adventures, and alas, there is also a betrayal - just like the movies. Plus, an index - a librarian's dream!
I recommend this to anyone interested in world history, the search for peace, and the development of spiritual understanding.

An adventure of two exceptional souls.......2006-08-03
The life of Nicolas and Helena Roerich has been veiled by various conflicting assessments. Some coming from guru worshiping admirers others from sceptics or jealous opponents. In her book, Ruth A Drayer's vivid text is that of an intelligent observer showing the reader a dispassionate canvas yet fully aware of the amazing quality of these two people who are still an inspiration to artists and esotericists from all over the world. I could not put the book down and would invite anyone not to miss the reading of a very special journey--an adventure of two exceptional souls.
Moved to tears.......2006-08-03
I just finished reading "Nicholas & Helena Roerich: The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists and Peacemakers," and want to express my appreciation for your book. Although I knew how it would end, I was moved to tears when I read of the passing of Nicholas and Helena. I have been a student of the Roerichs for over 30 years and I greatly value the love and consciousness your book embodies. Thanks and blessings to you, Ruth.
Nicolas & Helena Roerich exemplify the power of the human spirit.......2006-08-02
The lives of Nicholas and Helena Roerich as recounted by Ruth Drayer have enlightened my being. Just as the Roerich's used their artistic genius and clear intention to discover inner peace and create a world where the kernel of spiritual peace could live in all humanity, this book demands that one look inward and ask the question, "How can I make a difference in my life?". Helena and Nicholas will touch your heart, stir your dreams and remind you of the power and perseverance of the human spirit.
A shared journey.......2006-07-06

Book Description
Tired of the frantic activity of society, and, more troubling, growing tired of each other (and their inability to have a child), Alan Kesselheim and Marypat Zitzer decide to take unusual steps to avert a crisis in their marriage. They escape on a year-long canoeing expedition.
They begin paddling at Grand Cache, Alberta, on the Smoky River. Following old fur-trade routes, they travel northeast, to the far end of Lake Athabaska. Their first summer’s paddling done, they dig in for a long, lonely winter in a tiny cabin in a deserted fishing camp. It is here that Marypat discovers, against all expectations, that she is pregnant.
When the thaw comes, they resolve to press on into the Northwest Territories, north of the tree line and beyond the reach of medical help, to try to reach Baker Lake – although, assuming all goes well, Marypat will be heavily pregnant by the time they reach their destination…
The heart of Going Inside is not the adventure of white-water rapids or the ferocious storms and numbing cold, but rather Alan Kesselheim’s deep joy at the beauty and healing power of the natural world – discovering fresh wolf tracks, looking an otter in the face, observing the ever-changing character of a river each day, seeing the slow stirring of the natural world as the hard grip of a northern winter begins to ease.
In this environment, what seemed important back in civilization becomes trivial, and the natural cycle, so easily ignored when insulated by modern living, becomes profound.
With rare grace Kesselheim enfolds his reader in this world and portrays the universal drama of two people learning how to get along.
