Book Description
The Essential Companion Workbook To The National Bestseller Raising Your Spirited Child,
In this companion workbook, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka brings readers into her world-famous workshops, where she offers parents and educators insights, emotional support and proven strategies for dealing with spirited children. The key word that distinguishes spirited children from other children is "more" -- more intense, more persistent, more sensitive and more uncomfortable with change. Through exercises, observations and dialogue from actual groups, Kurcinka helps readers learn to identify the triggers that lead to tantrums and challenging behaviors. Included are
- clues to help you identify the little things that can make or break a day
- tips for profiling your child's temperament and your own
- cues that indicate intensity is rising
- successful strategies for reducing and eliminating power struggles
By combining the intuition and compassion gained from parenting a spirited child with the wisdom of an expert who has worked with thousands of families, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka helps parents and educators view their unique challenge with perseverance, flexibility, sensitivity, and, most of all, enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic !!.......2007-01-12
This is a fabulous book. My child to a tee with great suggestions on how to raise these types of children.
Great.......2006-03-09
The first time I read the book, was without the workbook. I bought the book and workbook once I returned the borrowed one to it's owner. Great investment! Helps put everything into practice.
Does your childs have ADHD?.......2004-03-24
The author does not appear to have a real life understanding of ADHD. On page 35 she claims that "the difference between a perceptive spirited child and a child experiencing ADHD is that the spirited child will notice everything going on around her, but will be able to process it more quickly and ultimately be able to focus on and complete a task... A child EXPERIENCING ADHD (as if it is a condition that comes and goes) will not be able to process information quickly ...will be unable to figure out what is the most important information and will not be able to focus on and complete a task. In part I agree. Children with ADHD have a hard time selecting the most important facts to focus on. However, their brains process information so quickly that their brains have already moved on to another subject, questions, curiosity, etc. before their hand or mouth or body has caught up with it. When I read her viewpoints on ADHD I felt frustrated. It was very hard to take her advice to heart because she doesn't seem to have any real life experience with ADHD. Her books (I bought two of them) are currently sitting unused in my bookshelf.
My qualification to speak on this real life viewpoint... I am an ADHD adult with 4 children. Three of them have ADHD(2 w/hyperactivity and 1 w/inattentive). I currently homeschool them because the teachers could not meet their needs.
My "bible" on parenting.......2002-04-20
I have read the book twice and continue to reference it. This book has helped me understand my 7 year old son's behavior. I first read it when he was 4. My son is very intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and energetic. He cannot handle any kind of change if he is not forewarned. He notices every little detail, will argue till he is blue in the face, and cannot sit while eating at the dinner table!!
Now we are able to prevent many "blowups" because of the clues this book has taught us to look for. I even realized that I am a spirited person as well and that is why he and I were clashing w/ a lot of things unlike he and his father. I cannot praise this book enough. I will constantly refer to it and I plan on giving his wife a copy when he gets married!! Thank you Mary Sheedy Kurcinka!!
More practical books out there.......2001-06-28
I found the book 'Raising your Spirited Child' useful and helpful but did not find this work book very practical. It was mostly written in the setting of a class or workshop which made it ponderous to read. Although this was a very warm and personal approach it was just not very concise. I found there was too much emphasis on reasoning and adapting to the child instead of teaching the child to adapt. I realise that with spirited children a parent must be keenly aware of the childs limitations and that a little planning goes a long way in reducing stress. But I also think that a parent must be very careful not to go too far as to lower expectations and make the family child centered. You don't have to be your childs personal therapist in order to be a good parent.
This book does not cover the role of negative reinforcement which is so prevalent with spirited children who are misbehaving. Without this understanding we could not begin to address the issues affecting our own spirited child. For this I would strongly recommend any parent of a spirited child to read: "The Manipulative Child: How To Regain control and Raise Resilient, Resourceful, and Independent Kids".
This book does offer hope and encouragement which I guess we all need when struggling day to day with a demanding child. Nothing prepares a parent for dealing with a spirited child and they put every parenting assumption and technique to the ultimate test. Although my wife and I did not find this work book helpful for our situation, it does add to the first book which we found very helpful.
For our spirited child, the books "Ain't Misbehavin" by William P Garvey, and "Setting Limits" by Robert J MacKenzie, helped us the most. By teaching our child self control, it allowed the positive spirited traits to overshadow the negative ones.

Book Description
Maurice Ashley immigrated to New York from Jamaica at the age of twelve, only to be confronted with the harsh realities of urban life. But he found his inspiration for a better life after stumbling upon a chess book and becoming hypnotized by the game. He would eventually break the chess world's color lines by becoming an International Grandmaster in 1999.
Ashley realized that chess strategies could be used as an educational tool to help children avoid the pitfalls often associated with growing up. In this book, he serves up compelling anecdotes about how chess has positively affected young players. He also offers tips on technique, how to make the game fun for children of all ages and levels, and how to overcome the myth that chess isn't cool. Through his guidance, readers will understand how chess strategies can improve a child's mental agility, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Chess for Success is a much-anticipated resource for parents, teachers, counselors, youth workers, and chess lovers.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read.......2006-09-04
Before I read this book, I knew chess was a great game. What I did not know was what the author establishes to a high degree of probability: Learning, playing and studying chess can bring about a personal transformation as well as almost anything shy of a religious conversion.
My only strong criticism of the book is that there are a few howlers, such as the one on page 229 under Calculate: "Grandmasters can routinely see ten moves into the future of a position, even more in some situations." Yeah, right. Occasionally a grandmaster accurately calculates a ten-move-deep combination. Nobody routinely does anything of the sort.
Never mind the occasional feel-good sentimentality or factual error and just sit back and enjoy this book. I recommend this book to non-players at least as much as to hardcore chess addicts. You needn't know anything about chess to enjoy GM Maurice Ashley's book and his entire approach to the game.
New Life to an Old Game.......2006-01-04
Who better to write a book about chess than the first (and so far only) Black International Chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley? In CHESS FOR SUCCESS, he discusses the important role chess has played in his life, the history of the game, its impact on cognitive development, and its usefulness in educational settings. In addition, he debunks many of the common myths related to the game, allows some of his former students to share their experiencs in their own words, and provides tips for keeping the game fun and keeping children engaged.
Maurice Ashley's personal story is an interesting one. He was born in Jamaica where he and his siblings were primarily raised by their grandmother in poverty. His mother had left for the United States where she was working in order to help support her family back home and save enough money to send for her children. Maurice struggled with feelings of abandonment, all the while fantasizing about the wonderful life in America that would soon be his. After ten years of living apart, he was finally reunited with his mother when he came to live with her in New York City. Aside from the awkward period of adustment to living with his mother, Maurice also had to deal with the shock and disappointment when he realized that although he was now in the U.S., he would continue to live in poverty. As an intelligent young boy, he had little trouble adjusting to the new school academically. However, he struggled socially, as there was no real group with whom he fit. Maurice truly found himself when he ran across a book in the library about chess, this was but the beginning of a lifelong love.
The author also takes a list of 40 developmental assests (established by the Search Institute) and identifies ways in which the game of chess fits into many of those assests (he does a similar analysis using parts of Bloom's Taxonomy), such as self-esteem, sense of personal power, and achievement motivation. He also provides an overview of empirical research about chess and highlights some interesting chess programs across the country. While the book is heavy on research, it is presented in a highly readable and interesting manner. Further, it is supplemented by real life stories from students whose lives have been changed because of the game. These stories really drive the author's message about the usefulness of the game home. Finally, he provides activities, the rules of the game, additional resources, basically everything you need to get started with the game but the chess board. I am not sure what I expected when I picked this book up, but it far exceeded whatever expectations I had. He not only reignited my personal interest in the game, but has convinced me to introduce the game to my own son when he is older.

Coach, Maurice Ashley.......2005-08-12
Intended primarily for parents or educators whos kids are just beginning chess, and written at a level children themselves can find accessable, CHESS FOR SUCCESS is a unique kind of chess book. The book itself is not even shelved in the "chess" section of the bookstore.
The book is written as a kind of pean to the benefits of chess play for children, and Ashley lists the kinds of success chess has created for inner-city youth across the United States. There are testimonials (somewhat overdone), as well as sections where Ashley backs up these testimonials, citing specific studies. These studies include sections where Ashley regurgitates research on the psychology of "flow", as well as where Ashley presents digested explanations of chess's relationship to the "40 Developmental Assets" and to Bloom's taxonomy theory. With all the chearleading and feel-good stories, at times this book reads like a drawn-out Reader's Digest article, but the book has enough meat, however, to transcend that stereotype, and there are enough concepts repackaged and digested to make the reading worthwhile. Early in the book, Ashely presents the reader with a brief history of chess (presumably written to get the chess neophytes up to speed).
There is a well-written chapter on how to motivate young girls to play chess, and there is a final chapter where Ashley waxes philosophic about psychological aspects of chess play. This last chapter is the best, and reminds me of the interview Ashley gave in Chess Life, in 1999, right after he became a Grandmaster. In this last chapter, Ashley talks about how to handle "chaos" over the chessboard and how to "think like a child" again. The best written passage of the entire book is on the third to last page where Ashley describes how he (and I'm paraphrasing here) "saw a knight again for the first time." Compelling stuff.
If you're willing to plough through the feel-good testimonials and the occasional typo and punctuation error, I recommend this book. This is a quick read; Ashley is an inspiration.

Book Description
From Michael Gurian, the best-selling author of The Minds of Boys and The Wonder of Girls, comes the next-step book that shows how any parent can tune into a child’s unique core personality, hard wiring, temperament, and genetic predisposition in order to help that child flourish and thrive.
Based on the most recent brain research, Nurture the Nature features the Ten Tips for Nurturing the Nature of Your Baby, self-tests, checklists, and many other tools for you to help your kids get exactly the kind of support they need, from infants to adolescents.
While offering positive ideas for nurturing your child, Gurian also shows how to avoid the stress, pressures, and excessive competition of what he identifies as social trends parenting. Most parents know instinctively that their child is unique and has special potential, weaknesses, and strengths. No child is a blank slate. Gurian calls on parents to turn away from one-size-fits-all approaches and instead support the individual core nature of a child with effective and customized loving care.
Customer Reviews:
Nurture the Nature.......2007-06-13
Another great book from Michael Gurian. Its is a valuable book in addition to Gurian's other books on single-gender education issues.
Practical approach to child-raising.......2007-05-31
As he has done in earlier books and presentations Michael Gurian again exercises his unique ability to communicate the interlocking realities of nurture and nature in the daunting tasks of raising children. He combines experience and insights from his practice of family therapy, his own parenting evolution and the best thoughts of those helping us understand the rapidly increasing knowledge in neuro-science and gender differences. He presents the reader with an extremely accessible sequence of suggestions for helping children grow from pre-natal to young adult.
Using both his gifts as a story-teller and educator Michael entertains and inspires while providing the reader with specific ideas and methods to be explored. Nurture the Nature invites us to action on behalf of our child and children everywhere.
Michael offers a firm but gentle hand to help us surmount the significant hurdles contemporary life-styles provide. He may occasionally jar us from a treasured accepted practice and generally asks us to rethink our over-dependence on social trends as our primary reference but in it all strongly urges us to discover and nurture our individual child's inborn nature.
As a (not-so-great or grand) great-grandfather I am introducing this book to my extended family and all those with whom I work in education and family relationships. Thank you, Michael, for what has come before and now this wonderful addition to your wise counsel!
Larry Hackett
Perfect for Every Parent!.......2007-05-30
As an educator and school administrator for more than three decades and a parent of two college-age children, I wish this book had been available for the past 25 years. In Nurture the Nature, Michael Gurian gives the key to raising healthy and happy children: discovering, appreciating and following each child's basic personality. His suggestions are down to earth and just what parents need to hear in our media-dominated culture that sends many unhealthy messages to children and parents. The clearly presented information is carefully connected to scientific research and provides valuable tips for parenting children of all ages. Unlike most books written for parents, it will not overwhelm the readers with what they may be doing wrong, but instead give them the tools to meet the needs of each of their children. For parents, parents-to-be and anyone who works with children, this is a must read book.
If your life includes children, you should read this book.......2007-05-30
Michael Gurian has written a book that gives me the confidence to follow my parenting instincts. Many times, what I thought was the right course of action ran counter to the popular parenting theories of the day. I naturally assumed that I was wrong and gave in to what the "experts" were saying. In this book, Michael Gurian points out that our instincts are usually correct and he gives the scientific background to support this conclusion.
Children are not a "blank slate". They are born with natural tendencies and personalities. As parents, it is our responsibility to provide the support and guidance that allows the child's personality and abilities to shine through. As a result, the child is allowed to grow into the most capable adult possible. Gurian's book gives a parent the resources needed to resist "social trends parenting".
As an educator (I teach math), this book has given me a new appreciation for the individuality of each student. I am reminded that children do not come with a common template and that teaching them as if they did will, in most cases, miss the mark.
For parents, educators, and anyone who deals with children (which includes almost everyone), this is a most important book.
Understanding and supporting your child's is of extreme importance.......2007-05-28
I feel this book has greatly helped me understand my child better and I expect to be a better parent over the years because of it. Frankly I think I already see a difference.

Book Description
Introverted children are often misunderstood, even by their parents, who worry about them. Engaged by their interior world, they’re often regarded as aloof. Easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation, they can be seen as unmotivated. Content with just one or two close friends, they may be perceived as unpopular. Parents fret that they are unhappy and maladjusted. But the truth is quite different: Introverted children are creative problem solvers. Introverted children love to learn. Introverted children have a high EQ (emotional IQ) and are in touch with their feelings. They take time to stop and smell the roses, and they enjoy their own company. They are dependable, persistent, flexible, and lack vanity.
How can parents help their introverted children discover and cultivate these wonderful gifts? Help is here. Written by Dr. Marti Olsen Laney, author of
The Introvert Advantage with 74,000 copies in print,
The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child fully explains introversion as a hardwired temperament, not a disability, and tells just what parents need to do to help their child become the person he or she is meant to be—and succeed in an extroverted world. Beginning with a 30-question quiz that places a child on the introvert/extrovert continuum,
The Hidden Gifts shows parents how to foster a climate that allows introverted kids to discover their inner strengths; schedule ways for a very young innie to recharge those batteries and teach an older child to do it for him- or herself; create a harmonious household with siblings, and parents, of different temperaments; help innies find success at school, sports, parties, and other group activities.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for understanding adults and children.......2007-05-31
I bought this book to help understand my 10 year old daughter, who is an "innie". It has helped me understand her and my "innie" husband. It also made me realize you can't "convert" an "innie" to an "outie", and now I wouldn't even want to. The book helped me realize that being an "innie" is ok, even wonderful, in our "outie" world.
A must have for parents, teachers and families of introverted children.......2006-12-23
This a wonderful book! I feel that it has a great mix of scientific as well as real-life wisdom. Our 4 yr old son is very introverted and it was often hard for us to help him handle social situations. His personality can be hard to figure sometimes and this book is wonderful at describing the internal workings of an introverted child - and how to help them thrive. I am often referencing this book to help teachers, friends and family to understand his unique personality. I am reading this book for the second time...this time with a highlighter in hand to mark the many points that I often tell others about.
True...Completely True.......2006-04-11
As an introverted person, this is a very valid book detailing the characteristics of an introvert. I have gone through many of the situations decribed in this book. A must buy if you know someone with this personality. A++++ Book.
Good for parents and teachers.......2006-04-01
As an innie, I appreciate any resources that help others to understand the different learning styles and needs that introverts have from extroverts. I don't need a scientific explanation of why I am different, but do need to be understood for who I am. I am pleased to see that one of the reviewers found this valuable both as a parent and as a teacher. I wish more teachers would be open-minded toward our differences, and accepting of the different needs of different children. Too often children are expected to fit into one mold, and if they don't then they are labeled as difficult or uncooperative (or learning disabled).
Great for Parents!.......2006-02-05
As an extroverted parent, I was nervous when my son showed signs of being an introvert. I was worried that he wouldn't survive in our extroverted society. Even though my son is 9 mos. old, this book helped me understand and appreciate him. I don't believe the author's main point to this book is to scientifically explain the introverted child. I think it is to explain how to help facilitate our child's world so that it helps them be "them."
I can already see a difference in how my son reacts to me and the world. He is overall happier because I take the time to understand him. I am a teacher and it also helps me take another look at how I relate to my innie students.
If you are confused about your child's quiet behavior, I would definitely recommend this book to you!
BTW, I like that the author uses the term "innie" and "outie."

Building on the concepts put forth in their bestselling book Raising Resilient Children, leading child psychologists Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein follow up with this troubleshooting manual on the topic. The book assumes that readers are already familiar with their 10 essential parenting guideposts to nurturing resilience and launches into a detailed Q&A format that further explains how to communicate and show parental love effectively and how to foster self-discipline, self-worth, compassion, and competence in our children.
Based on real queries put forth by parents, educators, and professionals, the Q&A in Nurturing Resilience explains how parents can best help their children cope with specific adversities and serves as a reinforcement to get parents back on track when they feel that their efforts toward building resilience are backfiring. Among other topics, the discussion addresses how to teach children to be responsible without provoking a negative reaction, how to guide them to cope with frustrations and challenges without coddling or criticizing them, and how to promote compassion by modeling good interpersonal skills as parents. A helpful chapter on the parent-teacher alliance covers questions on how parents should tackle concerns with school problems and work with their school to find a solution. A checklist on positive homework skills and parenting homework practices lets parents know where there's room for improvement. The concluding chapter features a transcript of an interview with Todd Rose, one of the doctors' success stories of the resilience "program." This is a valuable supplement to Brooks and Goldstein's original text and gives helpful guidance in the tough job of raising children in a challenging and ever-changing world. --Cristina Vaamonde

If all parents could read this book we would all be in harmony!.......2007-08-24
There are many times as parents that we all feel a little lost raising our children. We question (or don't question enough) everything we do and say. This book is powerful! Every sentence, phrase, word in this book has a strong meaning. It gives you new ways of looking at the experiences that both you and your child are having from birth through adolescence. Our kids have so much pressure on them today. Helping them to build their resilience and manage stress is imperative. There is even a section just for kids which explains stress and gives real tools that they can use.
A wonderful book, a must to read!
This book has saved my sanity!.......2007-06-18
I have read Dr. Ginsburg's book "Building Resilience in Children and Teens" cover to cover and still refer to it constantly. He has a way of writing that gives us (parents) a sense of confidence in what we are doing right and elaborates on concrete ways to do it better. This book has completely changed the way my teen and I communicate. I now find myself in a better position to relate to my teen's point of view, and am able to talk with her in a way that she will relate to. I think many parents feel that the teen years are a time to clamp down on kids in order to keep them from problem behaviors. Dr. Ginsburg's book has shown me how to handle letting teens make their own mistakes while guiding them in the right direction. It is so very hard to watch your child mess up, but when you see how essential that mess is to their development, it becomes a little easier to watch and learn instead of worry and lecture. I have learned these years are a time to listen and support instead of trying to mold our kids into who we think they should be. This realization has opened new lines of communication, which is the foundation for everything to come. This book is the best 15 bucks (or less) you will ever spend!
I recommend this to parents of my adolescent patients.......2007-01-11
As an physician who takes care of adolescents exclusively, I am grateful for the resource that this book provides both to me and to my patients' families. Ginsburg's approach to understanding children and teens is fresh, realistic, and honest. He teaches how to understand kids and how to communicate effectively with them. He offers guidance on how to help children to help themselves, which is ultimately the skill they need to be well-adjusted, successful adults. Whether you are a parent or a professional, the insight provided by Dr. Ginsburg will change how you approach young people in positive, constructive ways. I keep copies in all of my exam rooms and in my waiting room, and I recommend it strongly to all my patients' parents. For my friends and colleagues, it makes an original and much appreciated gift!
A MUST have book for anyone parenting a teen! If you buy only one book on parenting -- BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-10-07
As a single parent of a fourteen year-old daughter and a seventeen year-old son, I see the tremendous stress that my children and their friends struggle with on a daily basis. They are striving to be strong and independent while trying to balance the pressure to get good grades, deal with peer pressure and friends who are exploring risky behaviors, handle family tensions, and just figuring out to grow up to be the adults they want to be. This MUST HAVE book for all parents provides a realistic and easily understandable method of reconnecting with our teens, and gives us the tools we need to teach them not only how to handle the stresses they face now, but how to grow into resilient adults who will be prepared to face the challenges ahead. In fact, so much of the advice in this book is about raising children of any age to become strong and resilient, that I wish that I had read this book 10 years ago, although as a parent of teens I am finding it incredibly helpful in our everyday lives right now. This book also includes a special section at the end - one for pre-teens and one for teens that they can read themselves, and worksheets they can use to build their own stress reduction plan. My kids actually read this section, and described it as "cool", but I like it because it reinforces the strategies modeled in the book. If you buy only one book on parenting -- BUY THIS BOOK!

Mom's read this book.......2006-10-02
As a wife and mom of 5 I've been a student of temperaments for years. I've read excellent material on the topic. Susan Crook's presentation of the DISC personality styles is one of the most comprehensive, encouraging, and accurate books available. As parents we are to be students of our children, observing them, understanding their particular strentghs and weaknesses, what motivates them or hinders their development. Studying temperament theories is such a practical means of accomplishing this goal. It's also fun, interesting, and exciting to recognize how our individual characteristics can contribute to our childrens lives in beneficial ways and possible areas of conflict and ineffectiveness we need to be alert to. The understanding of temperament is not limited to family relationships but can easily become some of the most useful knowledge to apply in all our interactions with others. The insights you gain will be invaluable.
A book with the answers........2006-09-18
After reading this book I have a better understanding of my child's personality and have learned the tools to help better myself as a mother. Children don't come with a manual and with having a 2 year old I found this book to have given me and my husband direction. I recommend to anyone with children to read this book!
A "must read" for parents and child caretakers.......2006-09-14
"Personality Insight for Moms!: Decrease Conflict & Increase Happiness Today" by Certified Human Behavior Consultant Susan Crook (with the assistance of Robert A. Rohm), is a handy illustrated, 319 page text to help moms understand their offsprings' baffling behavior. "Personality Insights for Moms" also helps moms understand and use their own personality styles, understand their children's ability to communicate better, handle conflict, and offer appropriate discipline, (or D-I-S-Cipline). Motivation strategies for different personality styles are offered. "Personality Insights for Moms" is a humourous, accessible book that will help parents ready to throw in the towel to hang on and keep on trying. The handy little lists, charts, graphs, and tools are quite practical and visually appealing as well. Symbols allow compressed information to be presented and humourous cartoons help to make the point memorable. "Personality Insight for Moms" is a "must read" for parents and child caretakers.
Personality Insights for Moms.......2006-09-10

Customer Reviews:
Good, quick, read........2005-09-29
Very good book. I also enjoyed the fact that it was a fairly quick read. You take the quiz, and then you read up on which personality style you are. It had great information, and a great prespective in all. And if you decide to (as I did) you can also read up on all of the other personalities, for more insight, and information. And with being a Mom of 3, it was great that I could read it, put it down, pick it back up and read some more, and not feel "lost."
GREAT PARENTING RESOURCE.......2003-09-02
Janet Levine is a master at translating Enneagram theory into practical application. Her previous book (The Enneagram Intelligences)on the learning and education styles based on one's enneatype is one of my favorite enneagram books. Her latest work will help all of us dealing with the greatest job in the world, parenting.
This book is short on complicated enneagram terminology and theory. It is definitely geared for a general audience. Even so, if you have studied the enneagram in depth, this is the most comprehensive treatment of parenting from an enneagrem perspective. It has a pragmatic focus on identifying your type and the issues it brings to the child rearing table. Very workable exercises and solutions are provided as well to help you grow past and from these.
I hope that Ms. Levine produces a complimentary volume dealing with raising children from their enneatype. That would be a welcome addition to any library.
A critical addition to your parenting toolkit!.......2003-03-31
There are so many wonderful parenting books that help advise and guide us to be the best parents we can be and to bring out the best in our child. However, Janet Levine's Know Your Parenting Personality offers something every parent needs...a blueprint to our personality and our children's personality and how they interact. Levine lays out a clear and highly accurate roadmap to navigating our strengths and developing our weaknesses so we can ultimately give our kids the best we have to offer without getting in our own way. For every parent who wants to connect with their children, reduce stress and be a source of life long support to their child, read this book... and keep it on your nightstand to refer to over and over again. You will benefit from the knowledge and your children will benefit for life.

Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.
Book Description
The spirited child--often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"--
can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate.Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more"--by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:
- Understand your child's--and your own--temperamental traits
- Plan for success with a simple four-step program
- Discover the power of positive--rather than negative--labels
- Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
- Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations
Filled with personal insight and authorative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.
Customer Reviews:
Strongly recommend.......2007-08-14
This book is one of the best parenting books available. It is one of the few books that actually offers substantive advice about how to deal with certain behaviors. Furthermore, it is the only book that I have read that maintains a positive outlook on "spirited" children. The book does not focus on ways to change the child and does not imply that the child has a disability. It simply teaches the parent how to deal to deal with behaviors and feelings of the spirited child. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the book is. I reread parts of it nearly every night.
Saved my mind.......2007-07-20
I was so sure my son was different in so many ways that I would never be able to keep up with him. This book helped me decide which of his spirits needed extra attention from me and how to direct that spirit once I identified it. Now when he goes nuts jumping up and down on the bed, I know it's because he has a lot of pent up energy from having to be still for a long time (i.e. school). When he gets very quiet and withdraws I know he is needing special one on one attention because something has bothered him too much and he's embarrassed by that. There are so many nuances for each of our children and this book really helps figure out the particular ones that your own child is gifted with.

The book was great. I was very please with it. I recomend it to everybody.
If you think you need this book, then you do!.......2007-05-21
This book is fantastic. I just can't say enough great things about it. If you think your child might be "spirited" do yourself a favor and give this book a read.
A great guide for the perplexed (parent, that is).......2007-04-22
This lady obviously knows her stuff, as well as her audience. Ms. Sheedy Kurcinka seems to be describing my child in some passages. I found the tips for heading off a meltdown quite helpful. And it's of course comforting to know I'm not in this alone! I'd recommend the book to any parent who's getting gray dealing with a "spirited" child.
