Book Description
When feeding babies, parents need to think outside the boxor the jar. Infants develop more rapidly in the first two years than they will in any other period of their lives. Over processed foods containing chemicals, preservatives, pesticide residue, and genetically engineered ingredients cannot nourish a growing baby. Infants need fresh, natural foods just like the rest of us.
Eating well can be easy, fun, and inexpensive. "Simply Natural Baby Food" gives you practical recipes to prepare whole foods that won't tie you to the kitchen. Best of all, your children will learn good eating habits that will last a lifetime. There is a chapter for each stage of a baby's eating development from first solid foods to fun recipes for toddlers. Tips are interspersed throughout the book to give the reader advice on cutting preparation time, helping baby to gain feeding independence, and getting maximum nutrition into baby's meals.
The book contains detailed recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, desserts, and beverages, including infant cereals, whole-grain crackers, sugar-free sweets, and non-diary nut and seed milks. Parents will appreciate the imaginative ways vegetables are incorporated into meals. For the child with allergies, many wheat-free, diary-free, and egg-free recipes have been included. "Simply Natural Baby Food" promotes a plant-based diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, sea vegetables, nuts and seeds are emphasized. There are recipes containing dairy products, fish, and poultry because, eaten in moderation, these foods contain important nutrients, but vegetarian and vegan alternatives are provided for virtually every recipe.
Find out how easy it is to prepare your own baby food. You'll save money and give your child the best possible start.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Gift for New Moms.......2007-09-20
The book is petite, as it should be; yet the writing is large and easily legible. Cathe's format emphasizes the simplicity of the recipes (that moms can literally whip up in minutes and freeze in batches for later use). Nonetheless, while the recipes contain just a few ingredients, Cathe emphasizes the importance of nutrition, and ensures that her recipes are well rounded from a nutrient perspective for each stage of an infant's development. In fact, there are numerous healthy tips and the chapters are broken down by age.
Actually, I found several of the older baby recipes (apple oat pancakes and pineapple carrot cake) and toddler recipes (whole grain waffles and minestrone soup) enticing myself! Really, the recipes cover breakfast to dinner tastes, and everything in between. This book even offers recipes for homemade animal cookies and graham crackers!
Worth noting, no diets are excluded from this handy guide. While there are a few omnivorous recipes (with meat), most of the recipes are vegan/vegetarian or offer easy alternatives. Along those lines, there is a plethora of dairy-free, wheat/gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, and nut-free recipes for any child born with allergies or other diet-related autoimmune condition. Cathe does use some unique ingredients that are popular within the health food movement, yet they are becoming easier to find, and could easily be omitted if you don't feel like seeking them out. The only thing that I think would help this book is a food allergy index.
It was hard for me to believe that over 150 recipes were packaged into this easily manageable cookbook, but after perusing the contents I was sold. Each of my expecting friends will be getting a copy!
A good recipe book for a healthy baby.......2007-09-14
I have tried most of the recipes in this book and all of them have turned out very well. Both my daughter and I liked the recipes. My daughter has managed to maintain a healthy weight throughout after eating food prepared by me using this book as a reference. Very good buy.
The food is definitely tastier than the store bought ones.
we absolutely LOVE this book!.......2007-05-15
It's a wonderful little book with great recipes. Our family found this book to be invaluable as our middle child was a bit of a discriminating eater at first. Ms. Olson's recipes helped her become the decidedly UN-discriminating eater she is today! Highly recommended.
Great Simple Recipes.......2007-05-07
This book has delightfully simple recipes that my baby loved. I also own Cathe Olson's Vegetarian Mother cookbook that I used while I was pregant & continue to use while nursing. I found that both books have nutritious & tasty recipes that aren't too time consuming. I'm very happy I bought it!
Some good ideas.......2007-04-03
Like many reviewers, I'm not big on the organic, make-your-own-baby-food stuff either. But this book is very helpful if your child can't or won't eat dairy products. There are a lot of ideas and recipes for non-dairy sources of calcium.
There were several recipes that my daughter liked when she was a year old but soon outgrew. Now at 2.5, when she is refusing to eat almost everything, there are still 3 recipes in here that she absolutely loves, and for those alone I'm very glad I bought this book. (The recipes she likes are vegetables with bread crumb topping, Almond Butter Noodles and nut butter chews. Even when she won't eat other vegetables, she'll gobble down broccoli with bread crumb topping and ask for seconds.)
There are also some good recipes for healthy desserts (i.e. low sugar and even some nutritional content), which have been popular at family gatherings.

Love this book.......2007-07-08
Granted, I don't have children (yet) but I am a picky eater. This book is wonderful for making simple and yummy recipes. I also really like the fact that each recipe includes each nutrient your getting and how much. Below the recipe gives you calories, carbs, fiber, etc. This book is an easy read and very informative, for the new or old vegetarian/vegan person.
Raising Vegetarian Children : A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony .......2007-01-19
This is really wonderfull book for all caring parents and a really helpfull guide to rising a compasonate, responsible and happy little people from their birth on, as well as perfect gift and reading for all people who are involved with children, no metter if they are vegetatian or not.
If you are vegan or vegetarian parents (or just think about becoming one) this book will also give you valuable advices on how to manage (respectfully) with realatives and friends who are not vegetarians/vegans.
This book is my favorite on this subject!
Really great book for anyone who is raising a veg kid, whether having just begun or long time vegetarians........2006-08-31
I am really impressed with the thoughtful ways that the authors have addressed raising vegetarian children in our culture. I am familiar with other books by both authors and so I surmised that the book would be about a pure vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, though those who include dairy and eggs in their diet will absolutely benefit from reading this book (nor is there any preachy tone about different choices). The authors have done a great job of helping find ways (some creative, some straightforward) to deal with family concern/conflict over diet and there is extensive nutritional information which is laid out in a readily comprehensible manner. The recipes are great- I hadn't expected so many recipes to be included with this book and I am grateful that they have been. My son and partner have loved everything we've prepared from this book! (Try the Tri-Color Quinoa Corn Salad!!) Growth charts...advice for ages infant to teen...comprehensive information on every page-- all written in a friendly and intelligent way. I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource for families raising vegetarian or vegan children of any age.

GREAT.......2007-10-03
Very good book on raising a veggie baby. It gave alot of great statistics and facts that helped me feel reassured that raising my son veggie was the right thing. Great ideas on feeding too. Would be a great book for anyone who is worried that being vegetarian might be unhealthy or to give to others who feel you are doing the wrong thing. :)
Good Information.......2007-01-04
Once you get past the beginning part of the book that is pretty much tables and charts of nutrients, this book gets quite interesting and actually readable. This is a terrific resource for parents in need of support when choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for their child.
great book, yummy receipes.......2006-11-07
As a vegetarian mom I worry about doing everything right for my little 5 month old. It's nice to read so many pros and get some good info on what to look out for.
Great Reference.......2003-01-07
This comprehensive books guides parents who are raising vegetarian children. Especially helpful is the advice for vegans who must be especially conscientious in making sure their children can all the necessary nutrients and calories. This was an invaluable source when writing my cookbook, Simply Natural Baby Food, as I wanted to concentrate on vegetarian and vegan recipes.
Great reference, not only for vegetarians.......2002-01-25
I just finished reading this book, and I wish I had it when my daughter was born!
We becams vegetarian (nearly vegan) over the last year or so, and that's why I decided to read this book: even though my daughter is no longer a baby (she's 2 and half), I wanted to start from scratch with the info on vegetarian nutrition for children.
This book offers a wealth of information on macro- and micro-nutrients and on all staple foods for a vegetarian/vegan baby. There's plenty of info on grains, vegetables, beans and nuts, fruits, and all vitamin and minerals necessary for a baby to thrive. I found the info on grains particularly interesting, as it went into grains I have never heard of or was not very familiar with and showed the ideal sequence to introduce the various grains, from the lightest and gluten free to the more common, glutinous corn and wheat.
Because even in omnivorous families, meat is one of the last items introduced to a baby, I think this is a great resource for any parent, vegetarian or not, as fruits, vegetables and grains are usually introduced first in any case, and this book will explain you how and when it's best to introduce each of those foods, also taking into consideration the prevention or spotting of possible allergies or intolerances.
The book also offers ideas for menus for your baby, and at the end there is a useful FAQ section.
A great book, which I am planning to buy as a gift the next time a friend is pregnant.

Helps Parents and We Need It!!.......2003-11-29
Anything that can help a parent is a great resource to have nearby! I like the sections on quick meals for working families and alternative Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas celebrations. Very interesting!
Also, the interviews with vegetarian parents are a great sharing of information and experience.
From the mommy of a 2yr. old and 4yr. old!.......2002-12-11
I really, really love this book. As a matter of fact, I do not know what I would have done without it when I transitioned my children to a vegetarian diet.
A vegetarian myself, I finally decided it was time to introduce this lifestyle to my kids. The catch was, I wanted to do it right. I wanted to KNOW what I was doing and how to do it perfectly so that not only where my children experiencing the healthiest diet, but also so that I knew my "stuff" when I would most likely be harrassed, or at least questioned by family, friends, or anyone about the way I chose to feed my children (and trust me, I was on all accounts).
Anyway.... I found this book, and invested my dollars in it, hoping to find all the info I needed. And I did. This book is complete with nutrition tables informing you of requirements in all vitamins and minerals, weight and height charts for kids of all ages, special considerations to be taken for veggie parents, and more. There is a section that concentrates on studies done for the past several decades, and an explanation for each.
All in all, this is a great book to have if you need some help and info about introducing and raising your children vegetarian. I reccommend it highly. If you would like a veggie kids cookbook (recipes that most kids LOVE), I also highly reccommend "Better than Peanut Butter & Jelly". Perfect duo!
A GREAT BOOK!.......2000-03-28
As a new parent, and vegetarian, I found this book very helpful in how to deal with outings at other people homes, etc. It also deals with the validity of raising vegetarian children, a plus considering my family is supportive of our choice. A great book for anyone raising a vegetarian family!

Customer Reviews:
Decent for food, so-so on other suggestions........2004-08-28
The focus of this book is primarily introducing foods to baby and keeping the food choices vegetarian. It also offers some other baby care tips.
Perhaps it is different in England, but some of the foods she suggests (carrots, spinach) are not recc. in the US for home preparation because of the nitrate content.
Attachment parenting fans will find some suggestions iffy. For instance...
The suggestion that potty training is not possible before 18 mos. runs contrary to what we're doing with our duaghter. Infant potty training is possible (see: Laurie Boucke's books). You can start to potty train any time you are ready to teach.
The book also suggests modified "crying it out" for getting the baby to sleep, and seems to lean to moving the baby into the crib and sleeping independently sooner than is reasonbable. Co-sleeping families are not addressed.
Weaning is suggested at 4-6 mos. and although she includes nursing in her schedules, I don't feel like the tone of the book gives terribly strong support to nursing to the year or beyond.
I found the suggestion of giving a baby carrot or apple to chew on but staying nearby in case they break a piece off a choke silly -- just don't offer it in the first place! They do make teething rings that do not break!
Some of the suggestions were useful -- keeping baby in simple clothing, avoiding too fancy party frocks, not fully bathing a newborn daily but every other day and "top and tail" on the non-bath days, freezing food in ice cube trays, etc.
On the food chapters -- the recipes suitable for freezing are marked with a star, and there's a nice variety to the recipes. Be cautious about allergenic foods -- I feel these aren't marked well enough.
Overall -- a decent book for vegetarian babies, but it takes careful reading. "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron would be a better pick.
A decent guide with practical recipes, though some flaws........2003-03-09
This book has many good tips and is quite reassuring. I do have some concerns, but the "Revised and Updated" version I have may not be the most recent, as the latest copyright date I see in it is 1996.
One concern is that she suggests peanut butter and peanut recipes for infants and toddlers, which is currently NOT recommended due to serious allergy risks. Another concern is that she discusses weaning fairly early, at 3 to 6 months. While this is an option for many mothers, it is not optimal and the Peds people are now recommending delaying the introduction of solids until *at least* 6 months (again, allergies). Also, the first suggestion she provides for 4-6 month old infants is juice, which is not usually not very healthy (unless you make your own or buy flash pasturized, etc.).
These are just a few issues I had with the book that I recall off the top of my head. Still, I think it has many great recipes. Hopefully the newer revision(s) addresses these issues.
good and bad.......2002-07-02
Although this book does give many good recipies and great meal plans for mamma and baby, I found some of the advice to be not so helpful. "Don't ever heat your baby's food in the microwave..." Then YOU come over and entertain my child while I light a safety candle underneath the pot to heat up his lunch! Also, some of the advice contradicts many pediatricians with regard to when one should introduce certain foods into a baby's diet. You must use your common sense here. Finally, I think the author should stick to meal plans, recipes and nutrition and leave the babycare advice to someone a bit more qualified than a vegetarian astrologer.
vegetarian mother and baby.......2001-10-19
This is the only book any mother, vegetarian or not, will need for navigateing the mysterious world of feeding babies without depending on commercial baby food. Rose Elliot's book is clearly divided into easy to read and find sections for age appropriate foods, cautionary foods, nutritional requirements and even complete menus with quick recipies.
I successfully used this book to start my first (non vegetarian) daughter on the road to good nutrition and now 14 years later, I am relying on it again for my 2nd. daughter.
This book is helpful in its simplisity and reassuring in its detailed nutritional information. Without any extra time or trouble any busy mother can use variations of the same foods listed in this book to wean her baby, feed her toddler and serve her whole family tasty healthy meals. This book would make a perfect shower gift!
Vegetarian Mother & Baby Book.......2000-06-21
This book had some good info about nutrition, and good sample recipes, but I thought a lot of the info was too general - it covered a lot of things that I wasn't interested in. Never went in depth enough, just kind of short blurbs on general baby care, which is not what I was looking for in this book. It also seemed a bit dated, and used a lot of British terms, rather than American.

Raising Vegetarian Children : A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony
ASIN: 0399522719 |
Amazon.com
For many people, vegetarianism is a moral choice, rather than one determined by the pursuit of health. Either way, one of the perils of vegetarianism is that today's children live in a hamburger and hot dog world. This book presents the vegetarian life from conception forward: how a pregnant woman can get enough of the proper nutrients, how children can be raised beeflessly, how to argue against those who try to steer you back to the ways of animal flesh, how to cook food that won't make your family secretly yearn for Big Macs. Those parents who aren't already committed to vegetarianism won't find particularly compelling arguments to do so here, but for those who are, this is an indispensable guide.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2001-04-03
I expected more information on vegetarian nutrition & recipes. Though this book presents some of the social obstacles of a living as a vegetarian with children, it offers little in the way of solutions to obstacles - just "arguments" for "defending" vegetarianism. If you wish to argue & defend, you should read this book. Education & information about sound vegetarian nutrition and reasons for living a peaceful vegetarian lifestyle are much better to help justify choices than the information that this book offers.
dissapointing.......2000-07-17
I was looking for more information on healthy nutrition for vegetatarian children. This book offers information on attitudes toward vegetairan families and a few nice recipes, but no basic nutrition information. If you're looking for a book to comiserate with your woes of people misunderstanding your wish to raise your child as a vegetarian, then this is the book for you. If you wish to learn about vegetarian nutrition for children, then try Sharon Yntema's books - they are great !
informative, helpful reading.......1999-04-17
I really enjoyed this book. I've tried 5 or 6 of the recipes in the back and they are fantastic. It really helped get us out of the mealtime rut we were in. I recommend this book to any parent of vegetarian children.
A comprehensive guide to raising the vegetarian child........1998-11-21
The author put this book in an easy-to-read question and answer format. It covers all ages and a wide variety of subjects, from how to deal with unsupportive families to nutrition for the young bodybuilder. There is an excellent recipe section at the end. It's a fun read that offers sound advice and support for the parents of vegetarian children.

Some are YUCK! but others are YUMMmm!.......2000-06-02
I got this book when my son was about 8 months old. He may not be typical, but by 9 months old he insisted on feeding himself rather than eat things offered on a spoon. The recipes in the 8-18 month chapter of this book are mostly soft, spoon-offered dishes which didn't get past his lips too often.
HOWEVER, the 18 month and beyond chapter is a real winner. Some of these dishes are so tasty I've served them to guests!

A little confusing.......2006-06-16
I like this book for the most part and have gotten some good ideas from it but I only gave it three stars because it's confusing.
For example, in the 9 to 12 month section there is a recipe for honey glazed corn. Both of which are potential allergens. I'm pretty sure the US recommendation is not to give kids raw honey until after a year. There's also a lot of cheese, butter and milk in recipes in the 6 to 9 month section. Also confusing to me. Other books I have say to avoid dairy, especially milk until after a year.
The author is British, so maybe things are different over there? Whcih I also find confusing. The whole allergy thing is confusing to me and the introduction of certain foods. No baby food I've read does an adequate job of explaining the introduction schedule. Is the delay of certain foods because of the likelyhood of survivial if the baby has a serious allergic reaction of is it more to do with the ability to disgest certain foods due to maturity of the digestive system? Does any one really know? I've heard that in India watery peanut butter is baby's first food!
But any way, there are some good ideas in here, although I have largely ignored the age sections.
I also agree with the other posters and would like some healthier ideas, including more vegan alternatives and baking with whole wheat, flax, less sugar! How about no sugar.
Cathe Olson's books: Simply Natural Baby Food has some great ideas and she also has a good family cookbook called Vegetarian Mother's... something. Good healthy ideas for the entire family.
I love, love, LOVE this book!.......2005-09-19
I read and re-read this book for the first year of my son's life. I got wonderful recipe ideas and advice on freezing, too. My son enjoyed my purees very much. I always get compliments on what a "good eater" he is.
As we're not vegetarians, I also used, "Healthy Baby Meal Planner". These two books were a perfect pair for me.
A very pleasurable, informative book. When I have number two, I'll go right back to page one..no new books necessary!
I have a different idea of healthy babies and children..........2001-03-16
When my family and I became vegan, I needed some help with recipes for children. I found very few specifically vegan resources, and hoped that this book might have some vegan recipes.
It doesn't, and since it doesn't claim to be vegan that isn't a problem.
The problem, for me, is that the ingredients butter, cream, whole milk, and cheese are all throughout the book, most recipes containing more than one of those ingredients. I really can't imagine a baby or toddler being healthy eating SO MUCH saturated fat and cholesterol. Yes, their dietary needs are somewhat different from adults, but not so very different.
I was not able to try the recipes, but I rather think it should be a recipe book celebrating dairy and eggs. If you want to feed your kids lots of full-fat dairy and egg products, this is the book for you whether you are vegetarian or not.
If you want low-fat, whole-grain, vegetable-containing foods children will eat, skip this book altogether.
Pretty Book with interesting recipes.......2000-06-14
I was given this book by my lovely sister in law for my 2 children. Unfortunately, whilst the recipes sound lovely and they do work out, my family disliked all of them! I liked them but I am the only vegetarian in the house. I guess it depends what type of food you like. If you like the ingredients you will probably like the recipes. So if you are a vegetarian you will probably think it is great! Otherwise you may have a lot of converting to do.
Charming collection, but could be improved.......2000-04-18
Cute little drawings all over, easy to read. No nutritional info for each recipe. The recipes are organized by age of the baby. For instance, one chapter is called "First Flavors: 4-6 months" and another is called "Texture and Taste: 6-9 months."
The basic baby purees are pretty much vegan. Once you get into the recipes at 6 mos and over, there is a lot of egg, milk or dairy and will require adapting for a vegan family. Some of the adaptions are simple -- just using rice or soy milk instead of cow milk, others will require more experience with vegan cookery to make it come out right like in the baked goods.
I wonder about some of the selections because they use strong tasting ingredients like cabbage, curries, etc. An adult might enjoy them but I wonder how agreeable it would be for a baby? There is an effort though to keep the tone of the recipes simple and appealing to the average person.
The little smiley and unhappy faces with the boxes under each recipe is useful to check off how baby reacted to the food for future reference. Not a whole lot of margin space to write adaption or more comments though. Because a babies tastes change over time, I would have liked more space to note when I tried it again how baby reacted. Maybe several lines of happy and unhappy faces with a space to add the date?
Overall, it's a cute collection, and looks fun, but while I appreciate the effort to put together something that babies could deal with and create meals for adults that "pull out baby portions" easily for a toddler, I would have found it more useful if it had these things:
Notations for nutritional info per recipe.
If the recipe was vegan, ovo-, lacto- or lacto- ovo- with some kind of symbol
If the recipe freezes well with some kind of symbol
Space in back to write down allergies, etc.
More margin space to write down comments
