Book Description

This leading-edge CD by Esther and Jerry Hicks, who present the teachings of the nonphysical entity Abraham, is about having a deliberate intent for whatever you want in life, while at the same time balancing your energy along the way. But it's important to note that the awareness of the need to balance your energy is much more significant than goal-setting or focusing on ultimate desires. And it is from this very important distinction that this work has come forth.

As you come to understand and effectively practice the processes offered here, you will not only achieve your goals and desired outcomes more rapidly, but you'll enjoy every single step along the path even before their manifestation. As such, you'll find that the living of your life is an ongoing journey of joy, rather than a series of long dry spells between occasional moments of temporary satisfaction.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best I've heard from Abraham-Hicks.......2007-09-25

I have listened to a few recordings by these authors and find this particular recording not as superior as Ask and It Is Given, Part II, The Processes. I would not purchase this item again if I could do it over.

5 out of 5 stars Abraham & Vibrational Energy Concepts .......2007-09-05

This is a very good book on CD, and is life-changing material, if you are willing to believe in something that may sound VERY different to you. Most people do not believe in this way. "The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent" is the entire CD. Part 1 is "Living the Art of Allowing" and is a collection of 4 CDs, narrated mainly by Jerry Hicks. Part 2 is "Living the Path to Joy Through Energy Balance" and is a second collection of 4 CDs. You really want to buy both packages to get the entire book.

Abraham is a collective consciousness who speaks to Esther. She then relays the material. The material speaks primarily of metaphysical energy and its relationship to all that there is. It goes in-depth into manifestation by aligning your personal vibrational energies to match what you really want. Again, I know that's a hard concept to swallow, but that is the Law of Attraction. You really DO get what you think about. I have been studying metaphysical energy for about the last 7 or 8 years and I have seen the evidence soooo many times. Unfortunately, because of fear and control and many other negative personal vibrations, people usually think about what they DON'T want and that is what they manifest. Put simply, instead of seeing their car running smoothly on a log trip, they worry "What if it breaks down?". Instead of thinking about money in a positive way, they usually think of a LACK of money, and generally worry about it. So, they usually get what they do NOT want.

Anyway, this set of CDs not only explains the concept very well, but gives real-life examples and examples of the proper (aligned) thinking versus the non-aligned (improper) thinking, so you can begin to change your vibration to attract what you DO want. Like I said though, you need both CDs and an open mind, a VERY open mind. You also need to really work at this vibrational change to achieve successes with it. Even when you do achieve successes, it's hard to believe because we were just not conditioned to believe this way.

All that said, it's a great product and these are not the only authors talking about vibrational energy matching to manifest. What they say is right on target.

CD1, this set is slightly less than 2 and a half hours. The other CD set is slightly more than 2 and a half hours. Both sets together total over 5 hours of audio book material which you can easily listen to in the car on your way to work. These 8 CDs have the potential to change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Further Insight Into The Laws Of Attraction.......2007-08-08

I have purchased and listened to all the Abraham-Hicks material available and next to the actual "Laws Of Attraction" CD, this CD has to be the most insightful in furthering the distinctions of the actual Laws of Attraction. It has been very useful to me as a coach of the material and has helped my clients immensely. I would recommend it to any student of the Laws of Attraction to help give them a better understanding of how the laws work.

3 out of 5 stars More Positive Abe.......2007-07-31

This a good continuing series of workshop excerpts on various challenging life situations. Read by Jerry, this adds a little more color and warmth to the material.

This is a wonderful tool, it helps you stay focus. I recommend it to everyone.

Book Description

Originally published nearly ten years ago, Peace, Love & Healing offered the revolutionary message that we have an innate ability to heal ourselves. Now proven by numerous scientific studies, the connection between our minds and our bodies has been increasingly accepted as fact throughout the mainstream medical community. In a new introduction, Dr. Bernie Siegel highligths current research on the relationships among consciousness, psychosocial factors, attitude and immune function.

"Love and peace of mind do protect us," Siegel writes. "They allow us to overcome the problems that life hands us. They teach us to survive...to live now...to have the courage to confront each day."

5 out of 5 stars Change the mind, change the body--and get well!.......2007-05-09

I've submitted essentially the same review for Love, Medicine and Miracles as for Peace, Love and Healing. I read Love, Medicine and Miracles first and then Peace, Love and Healing and also recommend that others read them in that sequence: Peace, Love, and Healing is very much a continuation of the earlier book. Having said that, the most important thing is for anyone facing a health crisis to read them both. The sequence in which they're read is less important than that they be read--and absorbed.

I was introduced to these books shortly after having been diagnosed with cancer by another person who was (and still is, unfortunately) dealing with some major health issues. Although I've read tons of stuff relating to cancer and, especially, treatments of various types and stripes, I can't think of anything that provided greater value and (even) guidance to me during those challenging days, mainly because getting the "head" right is half the battle--and the half of the battle that far too many completely neglect. One of the things that Bernie makes imminently clear to the reader is that he/she, the reader, has a great deal of power over the course of his/her illness. That's an important message to someone feeling powerless. Plenty of powerful examples, thought exercises, etc. The messages are uplifting, hopeful, life-affirming, empowering, and above all, realistic.

Although I was vaguely aware of the mind-body connection before reading these books, I now understand that psychoneuroimmunology (if that is an unfamiliar term, you will become familiar with it by the time you've read Peace, Love and Healing) is real and can potentially be harnessed to the patient's great benefit: change the mind, change the body.

Naturally, I can't do justice to these books with a few short sentences here. But here's the bottom line: these books should be read by anyone facing a health crisis who sincerely wants to get well. But they should also be read by anyone who has a friend or loved one facing a health crisis. Read them yourself before you send them on to the friend/loved one. You'll find them valuable both for yourself and also for helping your friend/loved one deal with it. The books should be read by anyone facing a life-threatening illness, but their value transcends cancer (or other serious illness) self-help by a long shot, valuable as that is. Even if your present health seems to be good, you should still read these books. They will help you live more effectively even if you never get sick. And they will surely equip you to deal with a major illness if you ever have to face one.

5 out of 5 stars Bernie, you're great!.......2007-04-03

I just love Bernie Siegal, and admire his openness and willingness to speak out and risk the ridicule of the traditional medical community. It seems his ideas really are important in healing!

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for everyone's health.......2002-02-28

Bernie Siegel writes in a very conversational-easy-to-read style in a book packed with information, facts, and understanding which is helpful for everyone regarding the connection between mind-body healing. Bernie Siegel helps us to take responsibility for our own health and to work as a team member with medical professionals in a co-operative style of relating.
Having fairly recently been diagnosed with an advanced cancer this book helped me to see cancer in a new light.
Everyone would bemnefit from reading this book for their health in general.

Join Deepak Chopra on a wondrous journey. . . "The Path to Love." Philosophical, inspiring, and ultimately very practical, The Path to Love is a book that can change lives as it invites the spirit to work its wonders on the most complex and richly rewarding terrain of all: the human heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars DEEPAK GOES DEEP.......2007-01-21

Deepak is always inspiring - and backed up by good science and the golden heart. Fascinating and uplifting. I also got a lot out of Harold Klemp's writings on the HU sound - also opening the heart to divine love.
Here's a favorite quote from Klemp on the off chance there's an interest:

"If life's too hard,
try singing HU*. It's a love song
to God. Sing it for ten minutes.
Sing it quietly in your bedroom
so no one will disturb you. Or
if you must, sing it silently inside,
when you're among people. Then
trust God to give you the answer
to help you with your problem."

~ From Wisdom of the Heart, Book 2 by Harold Klemp ~
(*HU sounds like the word "hue"; you can simply close your eyes
and sing it gently, over and over.)

2 out of 5 stars Comments from the spiritual reviewer.......2003-04-21

Chopra tells us "there is a fundamental mystery to the soul, that its integrity is not violated by merging with another person. The blending of two spirits brings more to the union than each person started with." (pg 158) This idea is thousands of years old, predictable, and still very popular. But if spirit is already whole, perfect, and needing nothing, how could it be made more perfect by merging with another? Chopra further asserts that "when they are fully committed in love, the husband sees God in the wife and the wife sees God in the husband." (Pg 160) Yet for many people romantic relationships distract from and substitute for God. This fundamental problem is not addressed.

Even more importantly, Chopra does not directly explain how to deal with the presence of hate in the mind. As we all know from our own first-hand experience, there is nothing quite like a close personal relationship to bring out disillusionment and hatefulness. From a spiritual perspective, the path to love must be strategically and relentlessly concerned with the undoing of hate in the mind that we all hold for self and others. It is only by transcending or transmuting hate that we are able to know self as a loving being and to extend unshakeable love for others.

The bottom line: Chopra presents a complicated and confusing message about love which makes it difficult to get reading traction. The Spiritual Reviewer gives it an overall score of 3.4 on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high).

5 out of 5 stars Full of insights about the Self, Love, and relationships.......2003-02-25

Being unfamiliar with the writings of Deepak Chopra when I first got this book, I didn't think, judging by the size of it, that it would take me that long to read, or that I would have any trouble understanding some of the concepts that were presented to me. Boy, was I wrong. This book is so full of knowledge that you will have to read it a couple of times to get the full understanding of what the author is saying. Not that this is by any means a bad thing. I have been reading the Conversations with God series on and off for about five years now, and every time I read it I learn something new. It is quite similiar with this book. Like anything, though, you have to approach it with an open mind, otherwise the overall message of the book will be lost. Still, it provides many unique insights into what love actually is, how to attain bliss within a relationship, and several meditations that will help you achieve what the author is talking about at the present time. For instance, when talking about how the ego influences needs within a relationship, a meditation will be presented to you whose purpose is to try to chip away at the ego.

Again, this book is full of information, and will probably keep you busy for a while. Learning these concepts takes a while, but once you get them, you will most likely see a change in your life, relationships, and viewpoint of what love actually is. I know I did.

5 out of 5 stars Journey of Self into the Path of Love.......2003-01-05

This book should be mandartory to read. Chopak walks us through a light that we all have within us but so few of us truly find. A Path of Love is not a religious book nor self help, in my opinion. It is a philosophy that we all have yet many of us tread the earth feeling lost. Love and spirit joining with the centre of our beings...our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars The East-West path to Love.......2002-05-22

A wonderfully healing book combining Western psychological insight and Eastern spiritual wisdom to unlock and unblock the heart and overcome the mental and emotional obstacles to manifesting soulful, spiritually loving relationships and sustained passionate romance that can last a lifetime.

Good exercises and step-by-step guidance to discovering and unblocking your true feelings and looking within your own heart and soul to find your "Path to Love".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Valuable.......2004-08-03

Dr. Mayer brings numerous perspectives (Western psychologist, storyteller, student of Greek civilization) to his 30+ years of practice of Qigong to deliver an easy-to-read guide to this Chinese method of healing. His broad learning allows Dr. Mayer to share insights and ideas that help both novice and experienced practitioner obtain a deeper experience of the stances and movements that he clearly describes (with accompanying photos). His academic training shows through the logical and systematic development of ideas and exercises in the book. Overall, it was really easy to read, and also easy to use as a guide to various "sets" of Qigong methods for "bodymind healing". The appendices which give a guide to exercises for self-healing and research are useful for quick reference, as well. A great buy.

As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King

Book Description

The Nature of Animal Healing is a groundbreaking, inspirational contribution to animal care. Dr. Martin Goldstein, one of the most successful and best-known holistic veterinarians in the country, offers here, for the first time, invaluable insights into how to give our pets a healthy, happy, and long life.

Dr. Goldstein--a graduate of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine who runs a renowned clinic in South Salem, New York--begins by explaining his approach to alternative treatment: what it is, how it works, and why it's especially important that animals be treated holistically. Holistic pet care essentially revolves around the notion that the best way to cure an animal who is ill is to help the animal cure itself. We are not the true healers of our pets--they are. By treating the root of the problem instead of its symptoms, holistic medicine enables our pets to regain and maintain their own health.

In this comprehensive and accessible book, Dr. Goldstein not only shares his philosophy of how animals should--must--be treated, but also shows us exactly what to do. With moving and often entertaining examples from his years of practice, he offers prescriptive advice for the pet lover of every stripe: why we shouldn't feed our animals commercial pet food; why vaccines can actually do more harm than good; how acupuncture and homeopathic medicine can be used to help our pets; why pets need to experience a "healing crisis" in order to get well; and much, much more.

In his practice, Dr. Goldstein has had extraordinary success treating cancer and leukemia. Here, he begins to decipher the riddle of those killer diseases and shows us how best to treat them, as well as how to prevent them from occurring. Included is the exhaustive "Alphabet of Ailments," a list that tackles common afflictions one by one--the most useful guide ever published in a book on animal care.

Dr. Goldstein also turns to the spiritual realm, addressing how the emotional bonds we form with our animals have the power to provoke and cure disease. In his smart, helpful, and comforting style, he tells us how to deal with the inevitable death of a pet--both physically and psychologically.

Finally, there is an indispensable source guide: a complete listing of pet health-care centers, doctors, and products. So wherever you live, you will be able to act on the advice and recommendations you are sure to take to heart.

The Nature of Animal Healing is a revolutionary guide that no pet owner should be without.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Book!!!!.......2007-10-01

This book truly makes alot of sense, and has opened a whole different perspective in pet health for me.I found it very hard to put this book down after I started reading it.I have to agree with other readers, that, you will never look at your pet's health and well being, the same again.Every pet owner should read this book!!!! I think it would make a really great gift for others as well.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!.......2007-09-16

This book is very informative,if just for reccommended feeding guidelines and vaccination awareness.Every cat and dog owner needs to read this and be aware of whats in our pets food.

5 out of 5 stars Real Food for Pets!.......2007-08-23

From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.

For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.

She was also going blind.

Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)

She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet

5 out of 5 stars a must have for all pet owners!.......2007-07-09

Dr. Goldstein's book truly changed the way I care for my companion animals. It sheds light on a new approach to caring for your pets. I found it very readable and clear. I especially liked the information on diet, and made changes to my pets foods that have already caused positive changes in their health. I recommend it uncondtionally.

5 out of 5 stars The old Knowledge.......2007-05-15

If the human race could knoww the ancient knowledge it will be easy to live in peace, as a family between us as a real family and with respect to the Mother Nature, learning from Her EVERYTHING, specially, humility.

5 out of 5 stars Native American Paths to Healing.......2006-07-08

Eagle Man (Ed McGaa) shares his knowledge of Lakota Sioux spiritual practices as a way to include everyone who wants to heal our world. He calls those who revere Mother Earth and want to ensure her continuation, Rainbow People. He writes in an intimate way, as if talking with friends. He describes the meaning of the various rituals and myths and shares helpful information about how non-Native people may or may not participate. In addition to his personal journey and the sacred practices, he details techniques for building a sweat lodge, making a peace pipe and more. A fascinating book which has earned a place in my personal library.

Easy to read and understand. Very "down to earth". A guide book to preparing the necessary items and tools of the Native culture. Very well written.

If you're interested in Native American Spirituality then I would read most all of Eagle Man's books. He provides great insight into the Native American beliefs and customs.Personally I believe his books should be used in high school and colleges to allow others the opportunity to understand our Native American Indian brothers and sisters.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2005-11-17

I read this book while spending the summer backpacking around the Rocky Mountains. Anything that you carry around in a backpack for that long has to be worth the weight and this one definitely was.
Thanks Eagle Man! :)

4 out of 5 stars My bible.......2007-07-21

I truly love this book. It makes so much sense to me that IC is not just a bladder disease but the result of a toxic body. I reaize how toxic my body has felt in the last few years and how now I can change that. My only wish is that she would have included information on diet. She has so much knowlwdge and I would love to hear how she feels diet plays a roll in healing. From all I have read, diet is a key factor in healing.

5 out of 5 stars Along the Healing Path.......2006-08-06

This is a great book that offers many alternatives in treating interstitial cystitis. It's very helpful! It gives many, many tips on how to recover from this awful disease. I also recommend her other books "To Wake in Tears" and "Awakening through the Tears."

5 out of 5 stars Hope.......2006-05-06

I read the 1st two of her books; I will get the third in a couple of weeks. I have IC and I know I wouldn't be where I am without reading these books. They offer more hope than anything I've read. These are must read books. If you know of someone who has IC, buy them this book as a way of offeing them hope. They offer a way out, of what looks like, a no win situation. Thank you Catherine for writing these!

5 out of 5 stars Along the Healing Path.......2006-02-11

This book is both very illuminating and comforting. There are options one would not likely have found elsewhere. It gives hope that there is indeed light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. Written in a down to earth, warm style the book is like a welcome letter from a close friend. I am anxious to get started on Awakening Through the Tears.

4 out of 5 stars IC CONTINUED.......2005-10-09

This book I also found to be informative to IC patients. I think it provides us with another way to view this painful disease whether we agree with it's perspectives or not. I know a lot of things made sense to me, and some I am even willing to try, as I have lost faith in the medical community after battling this for 7 years. Good luck!

Book Description

Don't Waste Your Pain

None of us escapes the heartache and disappointments of life. To live is to hurt, and we all have the wounds to prove it. Regardless of how we've been hurt, we all face a common question: What should we do with our pain? Should we stoically ignore it? Should we just "get over it"? Should we optimistically hope that everything will work out in the end?

If we fail to respond appropriately to the wounds that life and relationships inflict, our pain will be wasted; it will numb us or destroy us. But suffering doesn't have to mangle our hearts and rob us of joy. It can, instead, lead us to life--if we know the path to healing.

Healing is not the resolution of our past; it is the use of our past to draw us into deeper relationship with God and his purposes for our lives. If you're ready to shape a future characterized by love, service, and joy, now is the time to step out onto The Healing Path.

5 out of 5 stars Great author, great book!.......2006-02-17

This is a very interesting book--after I read it I wanted to read all of Allender's other publications. He is a great author and this book was very hard for me to put down once I started! A great book for any Christian who has ever faced challenges in their life.

5 out of 5 stars Biblical Sufferology.......2005-11-07

"The Healing Path" traverses the middle ground in biblical sufferology (a theology of suffering). That is, it accurately avoids two common extremes as Christian writers attempt to address suffering: a.) the extreme of staying stuck in the past by blaming the past, b.) the extreme of denying the past by ignoring the past.

Instead, Allender, as his subtitle suggests "How the Hurts in Your Past Can Lead to a More Abundant Life"), explores what the Bible says about using your past in constructive ways. He divides his thinking into four primary categories: the experience of suffering, the exposure of evil, the enticement of redemption, and the empowerment of spiritual friendships.

A previous review, I think, misses the point when he bemoans the lack of exegesis of one central passage. While exegesis of one passage or book is always a core process, Allender takes the systematic theology approach by developing a comprehensive biblical model of suffering. It is obvious that Allender has done his homework by exegeting many passages, however, he prefers presenting the overriding concepts that he has uncovered, rather than a blow-by-blow commentary on how he discovered them.

The same reviewer, in my opinion, again misses the point in chastising Allender for a lack of practical relevance. Consistent throughout Allender's writing career is his belief that theological concepts distilled from Scripture and explained with relevance offer the reader the foundation needed to make specific application. Allender finds little usefulness for a series of secret steps, preferring to renew the mind, knowing that mind renewal leads to behavioral maturity.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction", "Soul Physicians," and "Spiritual Friends."

2 out of 5 stars Not much to say..........2005-02-01

"Don't waste your pain", says the publisher's note on the rear cover of "The Healing Path", a recent offering from the prolific and popular Dan Allender. Allender suggest that life inevitably entails suffering, and that the key is to suffer successfully. Suffering leads to redemption and life, but most suffer pointlessly and unconstructively, not knowing how to suffer properly.

Healing Path wanders about to a great degree, as Allender ranges over what seems a disconnected landscape in what must be taken as his current reflection on the nature of the world and its suffering. He addresses in turn, 1) suffering as a sacred activity, 2) its pervasive nature, 3) aspirations toward healing, 3) the pain of betrayal, 4) the ubiquitous mistake of suffering improperly, 5) the value of living existentially, 6) the pain of powerlessness, 7) living with ambivalence, 8) fighting doubt with faith, 9) "redemptive living" at arms-length from conventional church forms, 10) a diagnosis of modern evangelical enfeeblement due to centralization, and 11) immersion in provocative cultural conversation as the best means of redemptive change. The result is a fairly incoherent and chaotic ramble through Allender's musings on the nature of a sinful world and his attempts to find integrative principles.

Healing Path offers little by way of substantive reflection or practical remedy. The treatment of redemptive living makes almost no reference to Christ; indeed the entire book could have been written by a conscientious Mormon or moralist, so sparse are any references to Christian theological frameworks or Scripture. Allender attempts to integrate the discontinuous series of chapters by running a few anecdotes across the spans, but this effort largely fails.

He captions subsections with such embarrassingly gushy titles as "Hearts That Embrace-The Dance of Passion", and follows with observations that seem to evidence his mood on the day he drafted the chapter. Some chapters read as if you found him sitting in the bright sunshine of his study with an inspirational piece of music playing. Other sections sound like you caught the author entrenched in morose reflection on a rainy Monday afternoon. In all, the tone is uneven and the purpose is difficult to detect.

Allender may have reached the point in fame and stature where popular Christian culture requires nothing more of him than regularly released, mass-market soft-cover publications, offered in tandem, of course, with a small group study guide.

"My calling is to intrigue, disrupt, and invite the other person to consider his heart," says Allender. Far better for pastors and congregations would be a rich exploration of 1 Peter, where Christian suffering is seen to precede a staggering, disproportionately large recompense, and promise conformity to the delightful countenance of Christ.

5 out of 5 stars In the top 3, most profound books I have ever read.......2000-05-25

As a Christian for 30 years and an evangelical pastor/US Army chaplain and licensed Therapist, I have read lots and lots and lots of books. This book by Dan is truely one of the most profound books that I have ever read. It is worth reading and re-reading. His stories and narrative portions put images and real-life flesh and blood on our living out the true power of the Gospel and Christ's love into our own real-life worlds.

5 out of 5 stars True Healing and Preparing for a better place........2000-01-07

Chapter 8 has so much to offer. Hope in the biggest since. I love what Dan Alender does with words. Some things require deep meditation. As I read I feel myself coming alive in a way I never knew before. And as I read I think of all the hurting people I know who could be helped by reading, actually taking in this book and allowing themselves to be consumed by it. True healing does come and joy returns, or for some who have never experienced true joy, will expereince it for the first time. I think everyone should read this book. I want to put it into the hands of all of my loved ones. It has done me good. I wish to share the good with others. Thank You Dan Allender, you are my hero.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but Only a Start.......2006-05-06

As a Jew who is liberal both in theology and politics, I expected to enjoy Lerner's book. Instead, I found myself frustrated by its limitations. Lerner seems confident that he has come up with enlightened, left-leaning views on a wide range of issues, but I found the defenses of his positions unpersuasive. I saw little willingness to grapple with the best arguments that can be raised against his own preferred views. Similarly, he doesn't sufficiently acknowledge the questionable assumptions that any theologian must make before taking a position on these ever-so-difficult issues. I cannot imagine that he was successfully preaching to anyone but the choir, and if that is true, what's the point?

I sympathize with Lerner that Judaism -- indeed, ANY of the great organized religions -- is in need of the spirit of renewal. More specifically, he should be congratulated for leading a movement to inject into Judaism a warm, communal spirit that is willing to embrace change and actively seek peace. But Jewish Renewal advocates need more effective spokespeople than Lerner. They need writers and leaders that come across as more humble and self-questioning, and more willing to deal with ambiguity.

I look forward to hearing from other voices who claim to be Lerner's disciples but whose methods of communication are very different from their mentor's. Perhaps Lerner is a modern Abraham, but his movement is still awaiting its Moses.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag--but worth reading on balance.......2000-06-25

As another reviewer wrote, this book is a meal of several courses that don't always blend: in other words, a mixed bag -- but on balance, one worth reading.

Lerner's ideas about religion are often interesting. For example, Lerner tries to make sense of Abraham's almost-sacrifice of Isaac by suggesting that when Abraham heard the voice of God telling him to sacrifice Isaac, he was merely experiencing a delusion -- but when he stopped, THAT was the voice of God. Lerner's discussion of Jewish holidays is eloquent.

When it comes to politics and history (even religious history) Lerner is on shakier ground, and wrote some things that gave me pause. To name a few:

1. Lerner's criticism of Rabbinic Judaism on issues like homosexuality doesn't fully grapple with the views of his intellectual adversaries. Lerner reasons: The rabbinic authorities changed the plain meaning of the written Torah all the time, therefore we can do the same today when we deem it ethically appropriate.

What Lerner should be aware of is that some Orthodox Jews think that the rabbinic authorities themselves spoke with divine authority, because they were repeating an oral tradition ("the Oral Torah") which itself (due to a divine miracle) was passed down unchanged from Mt. Sinai. It follows that if you believe the Oral Torah doctrine, the Jewish position on homosexuality and a whole lot of other things must be written in stone--- or in other words, if its in the Mishnah and the Talmud (the leading documents of pre-medieval rabbinic Judaism), God said it.

I don't expect Lerner to endorse the Oral Torah doctrine--but he should explain to his readers why he rejects it, rather than just pretending it doesn't exist.

2. His discussion of the Holocaust is tainted by his deemphasis on history. He talks a lot about how capitalism and the lack of meaning in Germans' lives created Hitler--but somehow he overlooks the two most immediate causes, the Depression and the Versailles Treaty. Talking about the rise of Hitler without talking about the Depression and Versailles is like talking about the American Revolution without mentioning George III and the Stamp Act.

3. Perhaps because he thought he was writing to an audience of the leftwardmost 1% of American Jews, Lerner has not come to grips with the collapse of Communism and Socialism. He admits that Communism did not quite work out early in the book, but then he repeatedly refers to Marxism as somehow a liberation movement (I wonder how high the death toll has to rise for Lerner to reconsider). But worst of all, he refers to Mao, the biggest butcher of them all, "liberating" areas from "feudalism." The idea of Mao liberating anything is just plain morally obscene. One might as well refer to Hitler liberating the Germans (say, from the Treaty of Versailles, which was about as popular with ordinary Germans as feudalism).

This nutsiness arises out of his hostility to capitalism. Without much discussion, he routinely equates capitalism with oppression, and he seems to think some form of global socialism is necessary to avoid ecological catastrophe. He doesn't really argue these points intelligently; my sense is he just kind of assumes them.

To sum up: Lerner's book was certainly worth reading, but it would have been much better had he run it by people whose views were not too close to his--maybe one who is religiously far to his right and another who is politically far to his right.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......1999-08-24

As an extremely devout, orthodox Jew, I am in wholehearted agreement with Dr. Lerner that Judaism is in need of renewal. The same is true for every religion! Over time, every religion becomes stale, and is in need of regeneration. After all, Judaism is a product of an agrarian/pastoral society, a society that could never have conceived of a world such as the one we live in today. They wrote the scriptures with no idea that we would live in a world where women were anything but child-bearing beasts of burden. So before getting your hackles up, read this book!

Unlike many (unfortunately) short-sighted religious Jews, who have apparently learned nothing from the Holocaust, Lerner openly supports the gay/lesbian civil rights movement and welcomes gays and lesbians into full participation within the Jewish community. Together with his other book "The Politics of Meaning", in "Jewish Renewal" Lerner is staking out important territory. Any thoughtful Jew or person, for that matter, needs to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Showed me Judaism in an entirely new light.......1998-03-22

This book had a positive impact on me, and helped to reignite my interest in Judaism. In fact, reading it made me realize how much I was never taught, and probably should have been taught, about Judaism growing up. Some of the book's ideas are no doubt controversial, which is its strength. For instance, it lays the groundwork for a Judaism which in some ways is more applicable to the world we live in than has been traditionally taught. But at the same time it retains an idealism that the religion can be used as a powerful tool to transform our world. It's enjoyable to read. The only drawback is it tends to be a little repetitive at times.

Book Description

Unleash the power of fasting to help you discover your sacred self.

A centuries-old tradition, fasting has historically been recognized as a way to heighten human sensitivity to all things-animate and insensate-in the universe. Ancient cultures understood the link between the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual experience and acknowledged fasting as a means for making this connection.

The Fasting Path is a guide to help readers safely and effectively use fasting to tap into the sacred energy of the earth. Author Stephen Buhner explains how fasting allows us to experience fully the intricate relationship of the mind, body, and the spiritual world. Step by step, Buhner leads readers through the fasting process, preparing them to embrace the physical, emotional, and spiritual healing resulting from this transformational phenomenon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Ever.......2007-01-14

This book really explains it all, right down to the basics of fasting and in great detail the physical effects of fasting which is why I was interested in the first place. I also found out that the emotional and spiritual side of fasting is even more important.

2 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor.......2006-06-05

I was not as enthralled with this book as these other reviewers. As an RN, I know a lot about nutrition, and have studied the subject for many years. I've also studied fasting quite a bit.

One of this book's strong points is the physiology of what happens when one fasts, but I must qualify that by saying that some of its scientific assertions are questionable, if not dangerous. For instance, he says it is fine for pregnant women to fast for 2-3 weeks. Most other authorities on fasting, many of whom are MD's, advise pregnant women not to fast, as it could result in brain damage to the fetus. It is certainly not something I would risk.

Other reviewers liked this author's exploration of feelings regarding food, and perhaps this is another one of the book's strong points. But again, some of his recommendations, in my opinion, are medically unsound. Two examples: First, he admonishes his readers to look deep into their childhoods,at parental attitudes, and relationships with food, while fasting, in the wilderness. It seems clear to me that looking deeply into one's childhood and attitudes would be better accomplished in formal therapy with a good therapist, than off by one's self in the wilderness. In fact, a wilderness setting wouldn't be safe. It is well documented that one can become dehydrated, or hypokalemic (dangerously low in potassium) during fasting, especially if one has a pre-existing condition. Someone doing an extended fast should be under medical supervision, or at the least have other people available. Secondly, one's thinking could become distorted while alone in the wilderness without food for weeks on end. It is the job of a therapist to correct one's distorted thinking in a supportive environment.

Another big problem I have with this book is the author's philosophical confusion. At times he endorses Darwinian evolution, saying we are "evolutionarily" adapted for fasting. Darwinian theory assumes there is no supernatural. But through most of the book this author rhapsodizes on his beliefs in Earth worship, and the "aliveness" of all things. Remember, he is founder of the Foundation for Gaian Studies (in case you don't know, Gaia is "mother Earth goddess"). He says that a main reason for fasting is to become open to what "the gods" have to tell you, especially about your purpose in life. How foolish to think one can find one's purpose from imaginary animistic sources. There is no purpose without God our Creator, who in the beginning, created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

Bottom line, I would certainly be careful with what this author says, and read other authors on the subject of fasting. I recommend chapter 5 of "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living," by Rex Russell,MD, "Fasting: the Ultimate Diet," by Allan Cott, MD, and "Fasting and Eating for Health," by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Also, go straight to the Book of All Books. Fasting is mentioned 74 times in the Bible. See especially Isaiah 58.

I read this book after I completed an 18 day Lemonade Fast. I wish I would have read it first though, because it concentrates on Water Fasting, whereas the other books I had previously read where strictly about Lemonade Fasting.

Don't get me wrong, Lemonade Fasting has it's place, but water fasting sounds superior and quicker if done properly. This book also covers Lemonade and Juice Fasting, and not only that, it covers in great depth, all the Spiritual, Emotional and Physical benefits of fasting.

An excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone that is on a journey of holistic healing.

5 out of 5 stars The Fasting Path..........2005-02-13

...might be my favorite book by Stephen. I appreciate his works so much because he is strongly grounded in the natural world, specifically with plants. He compassionately and lovingly shares the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of fasting. He is very straightforward about why fasting is important, what you can learn from a fast, and how your body responds when you willingly choose to suffer. This book is amazing, and if you are thinking of fasting, it will definetly pique your interest.

5 out of 5 stars the book I've been looking for.......2004-10-29

I purchased The Fasting Path based on reviews found on Amazon.com. I cannot say it any better than they do. I'm delighted I bought the book. This is an outstanding book -- very helpful to me.
