"The simple truth about elders is this: they want their lives to be validated, and they do not want to die alone," writes eldercare consultant Joy Loverde in her preface to the second edition of The Complete Eldercare Planner. While that desire is entirely valid and compelling, there is an equally real parallel reality: caring for elders is a formidable responsibility, a sometimes daunting maze of financial, medical, personal, legal, and logistical issues. Acutely aware of both truths, Loverde's goal is to provide the caregiver the support and efficient, practical guidance he or she needs to be able to enjoy the often-rewarding and moving experience of caring for an aging loved one. And in an era when the fastest growing segment of the population is those 80 and older (among those, the majority are women), it becomes increasingly important for caregivers, who are themselves one day going to need care, to be informed about eldercare facts.

With a clarity and authority that comes from years of consulting experience, Loverde shares techniques and step-by-step tactics for all aspects of eldercare, from how to first broach the topic with an elder that he or she needs care and finding the best insurance coverage to emergency preparedness and managing the process of dying. Thirteen chapters are organized by a series of plans that instruct and advise the caregiver on how to research, prepare for, and manage a particular issue. An "Action Checklist" and, when applicable, a list of low-cost or free resources punctuate each chapter's end. The chapters on legal matters (estate planning, insurance fraud), money (cost-cutting strategies), and insurance (options beyond Medicare, supplementary coverage, long-term policies) will be particularly helpful to those first grappling with their elder's financial position. While on occasion Loverde's recommendations may seem vague--in some cases there are too many variables for the author be more specific without sacrificing relevancy to all readers--The Complete Eldercare Planner is an accessible, comprehensive, and thoughtful resource that will inspire caregivers in their pursuit of quality health care for the aging. --Rebecca Wright

I ordered copies for all of my siblings. Best resource I found on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Overwhelming Help in a crisis time of need.......2005-07-22

7-22-05 -- Recently I found myself along with 3 other siblings and spouses thrust into new uncharted waters in a totally new season of our lives. Suddenly and without any training we were and continue to this day having to take care of my aging parents. I for one will freely admit that as a child I was never trained, prepared, nor exceptionally gifted to undertake such a task. It is just not the type of thing that you can ever really get to a line and say ready...set...go...and do it very well. Elderly health care in 2005 does not always afford us the luxury of any long preparation either emotionally or financially.

Suddenly unmercifully and usually without warning you hear over the phone in the midst of a busy American routine those words you dread. It's Cancer, a stroke, or replacement surgery, just minor or major operations which means weeks of homecare and hospitalization's, etc., You are suddenly no longer swinging a few bats warming up in the on deck circle there in safety at a bit of distance. But you find yourself thrust into the batters box. You are no longer the stand by just in case fill in player who dressed for the game just in case you would or might be needed. But suddenly with a phone call, you find yourself thrust without any prior warning into the batters box. You are to take charge with 3 others voices and votes, your parents primary healthcare.

Now, if you call a frantic call for "HELP" in the middle of the night when just the week before things were okay a warning, well then, you're doing better than we were. You find yourself suddenly up at the plate with bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the ninth your teams behind 3 runs. To top it off you're facing a 94mph fastball pitcher who also throws a mean slider called the reality of life. You have never been good at hitting these kinds of pitches. Much less being the homerun hitter the team needs at this moment and are all looking to you now for. Then you hear through your wife there is a book available on just such a thing. It allows you to calmly and logically check out all of your options. It tells you in simple language just how you go about walking through this difficult mine field you've been thrust into without training or any real prior warning. It tells you how to do this without losing your mind, your family unity, and most of all your parents dignity.

I found myself literally reading the pages of Joy's, "Elder Care" wonderful "How TO" book on the plane going headed to Florida. I was then going there for my Dad's 80th B-day party as well as a visit to help out for 10 days at my elderly parents. Little did I know then, that I would see those 10 days turn suddenly into 46 long and hectic days I ended up spending there. Little did I realize as I paged through this how to book on Elderly Care that it would be like a daily Bible to me. I was literally reading a chapter ahead of the events as they unfolded in the next days. It was giving me the answers to question I had not yet asked, but found myself doing so in the next days to follow.

As a former Eagle Scout, USMC SGT., Police Officer, Business owner, 20 years as a Lay Minister and being Happily Married to the same woman for over 26 years now, I'd received lots and lots of great training. Even you will have to admit that this background covers a lot of diversified and really good training. But nothing, absolutely nothing, but my Faith prepared me emotionally, physically, or all of us financially for the events that would suddenly and totally unwelcomed show up in the middle of the night. They just seem to attack you without ceasing on these issues when it's "Your Mom or Dad."

Thank you Joy, for the time it must have taken you and the wealth of information this book contains. I personally know that it was truly a Godsend at a time of crisis in our lives. It still today continues to guide us along these slippery slopes. But because of this well timed work of Mercy and Grace, we have maintained as a family, and continued to allow my parents their Dignity and somewhat their independence. I believe this book will help answer the question of the heart on elderly care and give you practical and timely information to steer you to through the minefields of elderly care life. You should have a copy on the shelf in your own homes and be reading it now, if your parents are near or reaching retirement age.

We waited and it caught us totally by surprise. But it didn't catch Joy by surprise...I personally believe that she was obedient to the Spirit of God to produce this work for a time such as this. Our generation will Thank Her one day I believe for her unselfish actions in writing this Elder Care "How To Bible" for the uniformed. The Word of God says that "...my people perish for a lack of knowledge..." I believe that this book is full of knowledge that will help us all in our moments of crisis and bring life and health to all who read it.

Thanks for listening to my lengthy review and a very special Thanks to You Joy. You just keep on writing Joy and we will keep getting filled with the great knowledge we all need and can practically use for our loved ones. God Bless you and again... Thank you from our families hearts to yours.

God Bless You,
David D. Spaulding

My mother in law needs so much care and we had no clue on what to do. We bought this book and we bought the 36-Hour day. We are completely sure now that we are making the right choices because of the tips in both of these books. I recommmend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Professional Resource.......2005-04-30

I work for an area agency on aging in Oregon and do some work in our Title IIIE family caregiver support program. Unfortunately, in these shaky economic times, the State is on the verge of cutting a large number of our Medicaid clients from nursing home and community based programs -- and we are expecting much more of the burden of caring for the elderly falling to families than is even now the case -- so the more resources that can be made available to them, the better. Joy, keep up the good work! I also appreciated the chapter on caring for difficult parents (I've got two of them, ages 81 and 90, living in a mobile home park in Peoria AZ) -- in fact I lent the book to my sister who lives in Virginia and she found it very helpful during a trying time she had with them last spring.

Kids are the ones that hurt the most in a divorce. They don't have the coping skills to deal with the trauma some of these cherubs experience. They can't comprehend the various facets of divorce. Therefore, this book will help parents and grandparents explain about divorce and resolve those difficult feelings or questions the children may have.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Families and Clinicians.......2007-08-09

A very insightful book on understanding the important aspects of Asperger's syndrome. This is a well-written and easy-to-read book. I highly recommend this book for parents, families, and clinicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for those interested in Asperger's.......2007-08-05

This is a great book, incorporating answers to the 300 most common questions asked by parents of children with Asperger's Disorder. I work as a clinician and highly reccomend this book for parents of kids with Asperger's, as well as clinicians and mental health care providers who interact with this population. A great resource!

5 out of 5 stars best book out there on asperger's.......2007-08-05

Dr. Ashley did a wonderful job of creating a well researched, up to date, easy to read and very informative book on Asperger's. I work in the clinical psychology field and Dr. Ashleys book is the best I have yet to read on Asperger's syndrome. I recommend this book to all without any reservations!

1 out of 5 stars The author treats all AS children the same and acts as if they all have the same exact profile.......2007-07-24

I found that the author was rather black and white in her descriptions of children with Asperger's Syndronme which she refers to as Asperger's DISORDER. All children with AS do not have the same sets or degrees of difficulties and the author would make statements that led one to believe otherwise. I found it unhelpful and would not want someone else dismissing a diagnosis based on this book. An example would be that the author states the AD child DOES NOT: show much interest in other people or share in the interests of others. That is untrue in many cases. Some may have difficulty with it, for others it may be impossible, but for others yet, they may seek out others and friendships and have plenty of empathy for those they care about. Read Tony Attwood's book instead to give you the answers you need to understand the SPECTRUM of Asperger's. The author here does nothing to qualify her sweeping statements and treats all Asperger's children the same. I have read upwards of twenty books on AS, and I was the least impressed by this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great find.......2006-11-15

I have struggled to find answers about this condition since my son was diagnosed 3 years ago, thanks to Dr. Ashley's well written and informative book I now have tools to help my child.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful book.......2006-11-28

I, too, feel this book has some merit. It is a quick read that can be given to friends and family have little knowledge about adoption and the adoption language and ways to talk about adoption with children and others. Most people don' t want to read lengthy books and this short but concise book would be perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for friends/family unfamiliar with adoption.......2002-02-13

I disagree with the previous reviewer. I have found this a helpful little book to share with friends and family. It is especially helpful to those who have children who ask questions about their adopted friends. It allows those parents to answer the questions using the correct terminology and avoiding the myths of adoption. It is easy for the adoptive parent to customize to their family situation and preferences.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Book.......2001-09-14

This is a very disappointing book. The answers to common questions are oversimplified and clinical, rather than thoughtful or creative. The book also overgeneralizes and does not provide answers for the myriad of situations in which adoption can arise. There are many wonderful books on adoption, but I was looking for something that might be helpful to friends and family who might not want to read a lengthy tome on the adoption process, etc. This book is not the one. Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

What does God want us to do? Why did God take Grandpa to heaven? What is evil? In this wonderful collection for curious little people--part of a series with over 500,000 copies sold--you will find straightforward, biblically-based answers to over two hundred actual questions children asked about God and His heavenly kingdom. Amusing illustrations imagine a child's view of how things might be, and then a concise and loving answer follows, along with a key scripture verse. This helpful guide for parents can eventually become a reference book for children to call their own--one that will reinforce the beliefs of their faith as they grow in it.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Biblically supported and wonderfully simple..........2007-05-08

I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. A life of faith means living according to God's word. To be a Christian means to accept Christ as the one True Savior. The Bible is God's word, and we need know nothing more or nothing less than is in it. Those seeking a more academic bent will not be satisfied with this book because it adheres strictly to Scripture in giving its answer. God Himself tells us to seek Him as children, and the answers given in this book respectfully and beautifully follow that mandate. Things of faith simply can't (and shouldn't) fall into academic frameworks, aside from learning Bible history or the particulars of the events and/or people presented in it.

The previous reviewer mentioned that many of the answers seemed to stem from the same idea: "God is infallible." Therein lies the answer. God IS infallible, and thus should be trusted even beyond our human capacity to trust. I believe it is incredibly important for children to know this, above all, if they are to live lives rich in faith. Believing in God means completely trusting that His word is the ONLY word. This book does a beautiful job of reminding children (and adults, too!) that God is constant, faithful, and unchanging, and so is His word.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't attempt to give real answers.......2003-12-30

This book won't suffice to answer the questions of a truly inquisitive, curious child. It's full of circular reasoning. One of the questions is essentially "How do we know that what the Bible says is true?" The answer, of course, is that it is God's Word. Q.E.D. And how do we know it's God's Word? Bible citations. Another quibble: It neatly skips around the issue of nonbelievers going to hell by saying that only Christians will go to heaven, so wouldn't it be a good idea to tell all your friends and neighbors about Jesus now?--implying, but not willing to put it down on paper, that your kid's Jewish best friend or agnostic Aunt Martha are headed for eternal hellfire. You'll be in trouble if your kid takes the conversation in that direction and you're relying on this book to help you "explain" things!

The essential answer to *all* the questions in this book is "because God is infallible." That's fine for some people, but, as I said, it won't satisfy a child for whom these questions are more than idle curiosity. I don't expect such a book to give scientific or non-Christian answers, but I didn't see much discussion of *faith* at all. That, to me, would have been a much better answer to many of these questions, and would be of such greater value to a developing child than, essentially, "because I said so." Who needs a book to tell them how to give that answer?

Note: Catholics will want to stay away from this book--it is of an evangelical cast and I noticed at least one question/answer which contradicts Catholic doctrine.

5 out of 5 stars conversation starter for all ages.......2006-06-14

I have borrowed this book from our local library twice and will be purchasing it. My three boys, 2nd-5th grade, love this book. During dinner we ask a question and all discuss it. It is a great conversation starter. One question can last all dinner!

My daughter and I love this book. She's 4 years old and I am amazed at the level of conversation we have using this book. Asking her the inquisitive questions brings some of the most hysterical answers from her. You will be amazed at what your learn about your child from such a simple action of "Asking".

    5 out of 5 stars a great parent-child conversation starter.......2004-01-30

Each page of "Ask Me" has a question and a funny, intriguing, or funky picture to go with it. The idea is simply to turn to a page that you and your child like, and talk about it. Questions are things like: What makes you laugh? What makes you really mad? What will you keep forever? What do you put on to look good? The real magic of using a book like this is having both the parents AND the children answer the questions. I use this in a school setting with first and second graders and their parents, and they LOVE it. The pictures really make this book. I would highly recommend this book to parents who are looking for entertaining ways to connect with their kids.

201 Questions to Ask Your Kids

    Join the club.

Unfortunately, communicating well with kids is something every parent desires but few achieve. We love our children, but talking to them in a meaningful manner isn't always easy.

The questions in this book are designed to help.  No matter what age or sex your children, no matter how many children you have, no matter how good or bad your current parent/child relationship, this simple "game" will get your family talking more.  And when you're talking--really talking about emotions and fears and attitudes--you'll be learning about each other as individuals and growing closer together as a group.

    An Introduction For Kids

Wouldn't it be fun to find out more about what your father or mother was like when he or she was a kid?  Or get to tell your parents which of their friends you think looks dorkiest?  Wouldn't conversation be more interesting if you and your family traded unexpected questions and answers at dinner rather than just talked about what homework did or didn't get done?

There are a lot of great things to talk about that no one ever brings up because we usually think conversation is serious rather than a way of being playful.  Of course, conversation should be about serious things some of the time--some of the questions in this book are about very serious topics.   But other times, questions should be asked just to create new ways to think about things, look back on our lives, or imagine what life would be like if we could design in any way we wanted.  In fact, I wrote this book because I think talking can be terrific fun, and even talking to your parents and brothers or sisters can be a kind of great game.  Everyone can get to know each other and laugh a lot--and be amazed from time to time.  No one wins or loses, but there is an element of surprise in finding out personal information about parents--and sharing some of your ideas, daydreams, and opinions with them.

My idea is to think of some of the world's most interesting questions that parents and kids could talk about and give everyone the chance to pick the ones they'd like to hear about.  Each person picks a question to ask and then answers a question when his or her turn comes around.  All you have to do is choose from the list under 201 Questions to Ask Your Parents and ask any question you want.  Your parents can take as long or as short a time they want to answer.  Any you can all discuss the topic if you like.  But then they go into their section of the book and ask you questions.  Some of them might not be so interesting, but others--like asking you who is the meanest kid you know--might be cool to think about and share with them.  They'll learn a lot about what you think are ways kids act nasty!

You can wiggle out of any two questions that don't interest you or are embarrassing--but no more than that.  It's good if a question makes you squirm a little; that means you either haven't thought about it before, or you have but you haven't wanted to deal with it.  But why not try out and answer?  Pick a set length of time to play for--and my guess is you'll want to extend it.  These questions get addictive!  You can play them at the dinner table, or after dinner, or on a car trip, or anytime you feel like hearing what your parents say about something.

So, this is a book about how to have intesting and often funny conversations with your family.  It's a way to avoid dead, boring silences and fill the time instead with questions and answers that everyone will enjoy thinking about.  I know that in my family, it is too easy for us to get stuck talking about praqctical things like who has to be taken where the next day.  That isn't particularly fun.  It doesn't let me in on what my kides are thinking, and it doesn't help my two teenagers learn things that might help them understand me a little better.

An ingenious book that speaks to both parents and their kids. 201 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KIDS/201 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PARENTS is two books in one. Open it from one side, and it provides parents with 201 questions for their children intended to spark discussion, help reveal who their children really are, and help children think about themselves and the world in new and useful ways. Turn it over, and there are 201 questions children can ask back to their parents. Devised as an interactive "game," this is a book that can get any family talking-really talking about facts and fears and attitudes. An ingenious book that speaks to both parents and their kids. 201 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KIDS/201 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PARENTS is two books in one. 5 out of 5 stars Fun for Everyone.......2005-09-21

We keep this book on our nightstand or in the kitchen and will simply pick it up for a moment of fun and interaction. My 8-year old loves to ask parent questions and is learning to answer questions more thoroughly and thoughfully as a result of being asked the kid questions. This book is a lot of fun!

    5 out of 5 stars Teen won't talk?.......2003-11-04

Our communication with our teen usually consists of her blaming us for her life and then storming off to her room. So I was a little doubtful when I bought this book, not to mention desparate. One day after dinner I announced we were playing the question game. My daughter spent half an hour asking us questions from the book, and even answered a few. It was a nice break from the usual communication and gave us some interesting insights into her thoughts. I recommend it for even the worst cases.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Tool for Communicating with Your Child!.......2001-11-13

My 10-year old son and I LOVE this book. He is eager to answer the great and varied questions. You really find out things you DID NOT know about your child before. And my son loves to ask me the questions for parents. This is a MUST HAVE book for parents eager to communicate more fully with their children. I'm buying this for Christmas for my friends who have children.

5 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Way to Revive Family Conversations!.......2001-03-13

My brother-in-law pulled this book out after a family dinner, with three generations present: grandparents, two sets of parents, two kids (teen through college-age) and a friend. We passed the book around several times with each person picking anyone at the table to ask a question to.

It proved to be a highly entertaining evening, ranging from the hilarious to the historic to true confessions.

In this day when our culture seems to have lost the art of conversation, this book would be an excellent way to revive meaningful interaction within families. I recommend this book, but be careful, you might be asked an embarrassing question or two!

4 out of 5 stars Great communication tool.......2000-08-17

Dinner time and road trips are fun with this book. The questions lead to great conversations that I may not have had with my chldren otherwise. The questions for parents can sometimes be tough, which is probably why my oldest loves to ask them. It is geared for children of a junior high school age or older, yet my four year old enjoys playing as well. If you have a tough time getting more than one or two word responses when talking to your children - this book is for you. Not only will it help you to get to know children's thoughts a feelings a little better they get to know you better too.
