2 out of 5 stars Outdated. See Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs.......2007-07-19

Very limited information in this book and it is not up to date. A great deal of more recent scientific research is not included.

If you want this type of book, the expanded version published in 2000 titled < > is more complete, but it too has flaws, but not nearly as many as this book. I can't think of any reason to buy this book instead of < >, unless for legal reasons one wants just the information from the Commission E Monographs and nothing more.

One very important difference between the Commission E Monographs and < < Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs >> is the expanded book contains extensive references, photographs and additional resources. The Commission E Monographs contain none of the references used to evaluate the herb nor any photos.

Another related book is the < < PDR for Herbal Medicines (Second Edition) >> it has considerably more monographs (700 herbs), but one serious flaw is the references are only listed at the end of each monograph. There is no way to know which reference a particular statement of fact came from. Thus it is very difficult to very a claim. At least the < > cites the source with the body of the text so any fact or claim can be verified or clarified by going to the cited source. The PDR has more European references, especially German references (which will not be useful to the average non European unless they know German) compared to the Expanded Commission book.

Note, the third edition of the < < PDR for Herbal Medicines >> has the references cited within the body of the text and the monographs are much expanded from the second edition. A fourth edition will soon be available.

Other than the above I have nothing new to say that the other reviewers haven't already said. I have met Paul Berger and I agree one hundred percent with his review for this book. He is an experienced clinical herbalist and published author with an excellent reputation.

1 out of 5 stars Not useful in practice, outdated safety information.......2007-05-09

The German equivalent of the FDA has a special section that approves or disapproves herbal medicines for sale, and states what claims may be made, and what cautions should be issued. The process for approval began more than 20 years ago, and approvals were finalized in the 1990s of a set of herbs. This book is a translation of the herb reports. The book is interesting historically, and perhaps legally, because here we have a modern industrialized country approving herbs for use, and not declaring them automatically to be either ineffective or dangerous without review, as is done by the US FDA. The book is almost useless, and sometimes dangerous for either the consumer or the herbal practitioner. The arcane rules and regulations of the commission have led to a book with bizarre contradictions and inconsistencies. Echinacea purpurea is approved for use. Echinacea angustifolia, the stronger herb in practice is not approved. To make matters more confusing, although Echiancea angustifolia is not approved, it is listed as contraindicated in autoimmune diseases because it might aggravate them. Which is it? Either it is an ineffective medicine or it is safe, it can't be both. The book is riddled with such inconsistencies. In some aspects of safety, the book is actually dangerous. In North American and British herbal practice, it is a common understanding that emmenagogue herbs (which promote menstrual flow) are contraindicated in early pregnancy. Several emmenagogues are described in the book, but none have any contraindication for pregnancy. In another matter, input into the monographs in the book was cut off in the early 1990s. A large body of research into herb side effects, and especially drug-herb interactions, has been published since that time, yet did not find its way into the book. The safety information is seriously out of date and incomplete. For reliability of the information, there is no way to check. By German law, the scientific references for the monographs are not available for review. This may be an important text in the history of herbal regulation in the modern world, but it is not recommended as a reference for common use.

5 out of 5 stars What else one can say about this book?.......2007-04-30

If you work with Phythotherapy, you must have this book because it has real information. I believe that it is time to have the volume number wto. One is not enough.

4 out of 5 stars Natural Medicine Education.......2006-11-05

The Complete German Commission E Monographs is a reference book that anyone dealing with natural medicine should have.

The knowledge gained from this book give one the tools to administer natural medicine in a much safer manner.

The book gives the uses, actions, doses, side effects, interactions with other medicines and contraindications. It also gives the duration of use for certain herbs.I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Important work if one understands its place.......2003-12-03

This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

5 out of 5 stars Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine: by Steve Meyerowitz.......2005-08-15

Excellent book, I have marginal zone b-cell cancer and hep c from vietnam, I am currently working with my traditional medical Dr's. but also using as much natural medicine as I can find.
I 1st had to get my blood levels healthy enough to be able to be treated with traditional medicine, I believe this was done thanks to the info in this book helping me to process wheatgrass to juice and helping me to grow my own wheatgrass as it is not readily available in the town I live in.

3 out of 5 stars Over the Top?.......2002-11-20

It's hard to know what to say about this book. It includes research abstracts and practical advice about incorporating wheat grass juice into your diet, but it comes close to attributing mystical properties to wheat grass, which seems to me to be a little over the top. If you are thinking of buying this book, it is probably because you or someone close to you has cancer or some other serious health problem. If you want to add wheat grass juice to a good nutrition plan and good medical care, this book will be helpful. If you are looking for a magic bullet or a miracle cure, this book might convince you that you've found it.

1 out of 5 stars Lots Of Hype And Little Substance.......2001-09-26

When a book is entitled "Wheatgrass: Natures Finest Medicine" you expect the author to be enthusiastic about wheatgrass, but this book goes beyond enthusiasm and into cultishness. Other than a few tables of nutritional information, there is little factual information about wheatgrass. Nutrition isn't even discussed until the fifth chapter - after chapters extolling the great leaders of the wheatgrass movement and promoting the spiritual value of consuming wheatgrass, including comments about revitalizing your cosmic cell consciousness, and how Jesus (as recorded in secret gospels) encouraged his disciples to chew grass. Then there are the many true life stories of miraculous healings from cancer and spiritual awakenings obtained by eating wheatgrass, not to mention a lengthy promotion of various health and spiritual renewal sanctuaries and resorts. It may well be true that wheatgrass is a wonderful health food, but this book contains so much hype that even what substance there is becomes suspect.

5 out of 5 stars Wheat Grass: Sharing the news.......2000-05-22

Dear Steve, Thank you for writing this wonderfully informative and well researched book. The title is inspirational and the content educational. We were fascinated by the history section. My husband and I have both benefited so much from taking our precious "green gold" that we are committed to telling others about wheat grass and your book. We are sharing the information by loaning copies of your book to people who are part of our lives(we bought 40 copies). Your keen interest, knowledge and enthusiasm for the use of wheat grass to maintain health and prevent disease as well as it's therapeutic benefits is evident to the reader. Would you consider a sequel?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information.......2000-05-19

If you have ever been curious about wheat grass then this is a very good book. It's now the rage at all the juice bars even at the mall. The book explains the different types of grass, why one is better than another and what to avoid. I now have a much sharper eye and always demand to see the wheat grass before it gets pressed. I avoid the juice bars with ignorant kids working at them because they don't know what they are doing and so why waste my time. It's not preachy and I also appreciate that too.

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Chinese Medicine is a fine prescription for those tired of the bureaucracy or the ineffectiveness of Western medicine. It's also a good resource for those who are just interested in exploring ways to improve their general health. Replete with hundreds of color photographs that lucidly introduce and explain the arts of acupuncture, meditation, acupressure massage, and herbalism, the book includes fitness programs such as qigong and taiji, which help to unblock Qi (pronounced "chee"), the body's life force. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) focuses on Qi and maintains that imbalances of Qi cause illness. The Complete Illustrated Guide shows the meridians, or energy fields, that determine the placement of acupuncture needles to stimulate the Qi. It also explains shen the mental aspect of the body; jing, the constitution; and zangfu, the organ systems. Numerous case studies show how traditional Chinese medical techniques have been used to diagnose and treat patients with various complaints, including heartburn, PMS, and exhaustion. Overall, this is a solid, beautifully organized resource for the family that you'll turn to again and again.

Book Description

This beautifully illustrated, full-color book explains the basic principles of Chinese medicine, the causes of disharmony in the body that lead to disease and the Chinese approach to diagnosis and treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coffee table Chinese Medicine book!.......2007-01-22

Concise and clear introduction to Chinese Medicine. Easy to read and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for Chinese/Eastern medincine.......2005-09-22

This is an excellent book to have as a reference fo eastern methodologies in medicine and healing. Unfortunately it is long out of print, but if you can get your hands on a copy of this text, you will not be dissappointed. In fact, if you are unhappy with it, I will be happy to purchase it from you as I have many peers that would happily use it.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient tradition, many modalities.......2004-07-27

Over 3000 years old, Chinese medicine is based on the Taoist holistic vision of balancing all the body harmonies. This book is a lavishly illustrated and complete guide to every aspects of this tradition. It is not a self-help book, but a guide explaining the concepts and principles and providing a detailed description of certain therapeutic exercises that everyone can use to optimise health.

Part One explores the theories behind the medicine, including basic principles like Yi and Yang, the basic substances like Qi and energy flow, the meridian system, the zangfu system and the causes of disharmony.

Part Two considers the Chinese approach to diagnosis, including diagnostic techniques like looking, hearing, questioning and touching, and includes an overview of the patterns of disharmony.

Part Three deals with Chinese approaches to treatment, including the principles of treatment and diagnosis and specific modalities like acupuncture, herbalism, qigong and lifestyle factors such as exercise, diet and feng shui.

The Further Reading section consists of bibliographies under headings like general, herbal, diet and others. A list of useful addresses in various countries is supplied and the At-A-Glance Directory is an illustrative index to finding treatments. The book concludes with a glossary and index and contains full colour illustrations and photographs.

5 out of 5 stars lfoote.......2000-08-06

This book was loaned to me by a fellow physician and I had a hard time giving it back. It's a great resource for information that covers a little of everything in Chinese Medicine. I practice acupuncture and have found much of the information useful for preparing lectures, not only for the general public, but for other physicians as well. It's a versatile book good not only for it's comprehensive content, but also as a coffee table book as the illustrations are great. Would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the vast offerings of Chinese Medicine.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.......2000-03-08

As a physician who is studying and doing acupuncture, I find this a good basic introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is heavily illustrated, which helps the reader to understand some very difficult concepts, which are alien to the Western mind, especially for medical personnel. I can highly recommend it for someone who is interested in becoming familiar with Acupuncture and other Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable reference source.......2007-02-14

The Herb Bible is ideal for those who are interested in getting to know about herbal remedies and their benefits. It is not a detailed botanical work but intended for the average reader. Most of these herbs are available in pharmacies and health shops and are easy to use. The author explains what herbs are, their healing properties and how they work in the body.

He provides information on how to buy herbs, the shelf life of herbs, the correct amounts, plus a brief history of herbal medicine. Then follows the Hot 100 of the most popular herbs today, from Alfalfa to Witch Hazel. Every entry contains the popular name, the botanical name, facts, possible benefits, how to use it orally and/or externally, and cautions.

The familiar time-tested herbal remedies still in use today are discussed, and there is a chapter on herbs from around the world including remedies from India, China and the Americas. Other chapters deal with herbs that are specifically aimed at men and women. The preventive use of herbs, especially against heart disease and cancer, is discussed, plus those that promote blood circulation, boost the immune system, counteract the effects of aging, help liver function and improve vision.

A chapter is devoted to herbal grooming products. The author also deals with aromatherapy - the use of essential oils for healing. In the Resources section, details of professional and trade associations, mail order companies and suppliers of fresh herbs and plants are provided. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography and index. The Herb Bible is a valuable reference source for those who wish to take responsibility for their own health.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't touch all the bases.......2006-06-02

Good place to start, but even a novice like myself knows the dangers of using MAO inhibitors(like passionflower, yohimbe and St.John's Wort which are "covered" in this book)with fermented cheese, meat and beer and wine-Mindell doesn't even mention this-He also recommends a starting point for dosage as a tablespoon per cup(it's actually 1 1/2 teaspoons to be safe)-But,really,if you know nothing at all about herbalism, this is a good enough book.

3 out of 5 stars A good book but in no way a definite source.......2005-10-27

Earl Mindell's New Herb bible was one of the first books I bought on herbs. While this book is useful as a reference, it is in no way a definitive source that should be called a 'bible.' The writing is well done and simple, and the text and information aimed more toward a beginner in every sense of the word.

Mindell is more of a supplement expert, and it does show from time to time here. Some of his comments gave me pause though. For instance, he says "Homeopathic extracts used by homepathic practitioners are much stronger than conventional herbal tinctures and are strictly regulated by the FDA. They should only be used in conjunction with treatment by a homeopath practitioner." This threw me a bit, I'll admit it.

He goes on to say that herbal powders are common, yet does not mention that powdered herbs lose potency amazingly fast. When he said bitters can be nasty tasting and that some may prefer them in capsules, it's also left out that when you don't taste a bitter on the tongue, you don't get the effect, which is the point of taking a bitter. He also discusses Hippocrates as the father of modern medicine, a slight peeve of mine but no fault of the authors.

Chapter 2 is the point of the book - the 'hot hundred' Here Mindell discusses briefly 100 herbs. Some have one paragraph, others have six, with a listing of possible benefits, then how to use it, then cautions if applicable. As a quick reference for the beginner this is useful; however, it's also quite vague. Many can sit and say what an herb has been historically used for, what evidence may or may not show (using these words), but I never got the feel he put much faith into the herbs themselves.

Some of the cautions are a bit overdone as well, such as not to use blue cohosh because it could be toxic in high doses. Well....lots of things are toxic if overdosed on, does this mean we shouldn't use them in the right amount? On Cayenne pepper he states that people with gastrointestinal problems should not take cayenne and that you should be careful on the dose. Actually cayenne has shown much benefit in treating several gastrointestinal disorders and even if it feels hot going down, does not do damage or harm (or heat impact) internally. As to it causing kidney damage in high dosages? Never heard of this either.

However, this is not to say he is overly cautious about all, for he is not. He provides much of the information in a non-biased, fair way. He states the facts or studies on some herbs as they are, and then may put in his personal recommendation, such as on the comfrey controversy. His inclusion of "how to use it" for each herb came in handy as well.

From the hot hundred we go on to a listing of traditional favorites, broken down in the same way as above, then herbs from around the world (nice touch). Finally the herbal medicine cabinet has some basic and helpful remedies for a variety of complaints, from indigestion to colds and flu prevention. It ends with a chapter dedicated to women, then men, looking good, and aromatherapy.

In short it is a good book but because the scope was so large everything was kept short, basic, and simple...too much so. You learned a small bit about every herb, but not enough to really know the herb well enough. I would rather have a book that covered them in depth than barely brushing across them. All of it is generic, and cautious.

While good for a beginner, there are others out there that educate more and allow one to see the bigger picture of things. Sometimes people who are past the beginners stages take great joy and still learn from basic herbals, I know I do, but this isn't the case here. I'm afraid if you've passed Herbalism 101 you'll be bored soon with this. Stick to it if you only want to know the basics a small bit at a time.

5 out of 5 stars A broad survey of herbs from Earl Mindell........2002-09-27

Dr. Earl Mindell has performed an invaluable service by writing a series of authoritive books on the role of vitamins, minerals, and outher nutrients in human health. One such book was his original Earl Mindell's Herb Bible. Earl Mindell's New Herb Bible is a revised and more extensive book on herbs which is still authoritive and easy to use. If you are interested in the role of herbs in human health you should have a copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars all in all, a great book on herbs.......2001-09-25

This is the book to read if you are interested in herbs. Its well written, easy to read, and extremely informative. If there is anything that you need to know about herbs, you can find it in this book. Earl Mindel has presented the best work on herbs that I have read

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars.......2007-06-14

What can you say about a classic? This book was given to me by an MD friend who likes herbs. Now I even travel with it. It is heavy - over 500 pages, but I always make room for it in my luggage.

It has chapters on ginsengs and other herbal tonics that are a life saver for active, athletic people. Also lots of chapters on preventing and treating everything from colds and flu to depression. It's like a visit to your naturopath or herbalist, but better because Hadady gives you the tools you need to observe your own health improvements.

I always felt that herb choice and dosage ought to be individualized. The book gives you the traditional tools (like tongue diagnosis) to decide which food/herbs to use, when to use them, and when to stop their use.

I used Yunnan Paiyao (an entire chapter in the book is devoted to this super powerful herbal capsule) and it saved my face. I was robbed and battered. After I took this herbal pill, (also used by the Chinese army for gunshot wounds) my healing was fast and scars minimal.
Everybody should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Asian Health Secrets.......2007-06-13

I haven't gone through the entire book yet, but I'm willing to try some of the herbs mentioned. It's laid out very well, and I wish all doctors had this book so that they could look at this before they prescribed their deadly medicine that they are paid to prescribe from the pharmaceuticals.

5 out of 5 stars Asian Health Secrets.......2007-01-05

I am very interested in Eastern remedies and found this to be very imformative; easy for the lay person to understand and go to Asian stores and find the needed ingrediants for most of the recipes.
I have recommended to this to clients as I am a MT and many people that I encounter are interested in Holistic practices.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful...to a degree.......2007-01-01

Honestly, to start, I was torn with how to rate this book. I'll begin with the positives: there is a LOT of helpful information here. The facts, picked out, are solid and very informative, and as a whole the book is a great guide to Asian medicine.

The main negative, as I see it, is that the beneficial information is scattered throughout the book in such a way as to frustrate the first-time reader. If you aren't familiar with many of the basic concepts of Chinese medicine, such as warming/cooling herbs, you don't really gain an understanding of these things until about halfway through the book. There is no time spent in early chapters to acquaint the novice with the things that the author takes for granted.

On the whole, it's a great book with a lot of good info, if you've got the patience to read it a few times - which, really, with a good reference book, you want to do anyway. Personally I do say it's worth it, but I wouldn't treat this book as a simple reference to have on the shelves - it's for someone who either has deeper knowledge or is looking for it.

5 out of 5 stars We use this book at work.......2006-05-01

I am stationed in Iraq currently home on R&R leave. This book is like a Bible for us guys who need quick answers. We have our folks send the herbs and homeopathic remedies to us. I am bringing back a s--- load of herbal pills from Walmart back with me in my pack. That is the best way to take personal stuff to Iraq.Waiting for packages can take months.

Homeopathic belladonna was given to me by my medic and it brought down my fever. OVer there 100 degrees is a cool day. That is great news to have something that works well, fast and has no side-effects.

Asian Health Secrets should be on everybody's shelf. Yunnan Paiyao, a medicine made in China available anywhere chinese people live can save lives. It stops excess bleeding from wounds, bug bites--we have some incredible spiders in Iraq--and Yunnan Paiyao heals anything fast. It reduces pain and stops hemmorage. That information alone is worth the book. It is a great book. Buy it.

Not bad for your first herbal book. But it's visually cluttered and treads cautiously (and a little too cutely). A beginner doesn't want to tangle with bad or dangerous advice, though, so it's a good book to have in the bottom of your herbal book pile. As the best of medical advice and practice - "First, do no harm!"

You won't be sorry. Worth every cent. The herb store I go to also said this was a great book. I actually went to the dr and came back with a clean bill of health and I know it is from going by this book. Thanks Frankie.:)

4 out of 5 stars Not a how-to guide: more of a treatise on the dangerous effects of herbs.......2007-06-25

This book is very useful - in one way. It describes the darker side of herbs. The fact that you shouldn't take ginseng if you are taking insulin is a fact little known by many, including unprofessional herbalists. However, the entire book is about the dangers of the plants - the "suspected" medicinal values are listed in a tiny sidebar, yet the authors go into enormous detail about side effects, interactions and dangers. This information needs to be known, as it is important, but the book is negative in every aspect. It seems more than anything that the authors are trying to discourage the use of herbal medicine.
This book is not a reference for herbal medicine, nor will it tell you how to use the herbs for medicine. But it is good information to know.

3 out of 5 stars Herb Gyrl.......2007-01-19

I am an avid user of herbs for medicinal purposes and found this book to be very informative but not at all complete. It is missing a few key herbs that are used in many daily meditation practices.

3 out of 5 stars USEFUL BUT BRIEF.......2006-07-29

A COUPLE OF POINTS ARE MADE BY OTHER REVIEWERS I'D LIKE TO ADDRESS. LINKING PHARMACISTS TO THE GREEDY, UNSCRUPLOUS PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS IS DOING MOST PHARMACISTS AN INJUSTICE. MANY OF MY COLLEAGUES ARE WILLING TO USE ANY REMEDY TO PROVIDE OUR PATIENTS RELIEF FROM THEIR SYMPTOMS, PROVIDED IT HAS BEEN PROVEN SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. PROVEN IS THE KEY WORD HERE. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY WELL RUN AND DOCUMENTED STUDIES PROVING THE BENEFITS OF MANY HERBAL PRODUCTS BUT FOR EVERY ONE OF THOSE THERE SEEMS TO BE 6 OR 8 THAT ARE POORLY DESIGNED, OFFER ANECDOTES RATHER THAN PROOF, OR COME TO DUBIOUS CONCLUSIONS. THAT SAID, JUST BECAUSE A STUDY IS NOT SCIENTIFIC DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE HERBAL REMEDY IS NOT HELPFUL. AS A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WE MUST ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION... "FIRST DO NO HARM...". FOR A MORE BALANCED, MORE COMPLETE PICTURE SEE THE AUTHORS' WORK ENTITLED "PROFESSIONAL'S HANDBOOK OF COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES".

1 out of 5 stars Obviously written by pharmacists.......2005-10-21

This book was one of the few I first purchased when beginning my walk with herbs and natural healing. The introduction clearly states that herbs are a useful medicine, with Avila and Fetrow explaining why this is so, backing up their opinion, and stating why herbs have been turned away from.

Regrettably, their opinion seems to change once you actually read past the introduction.

95% or more of the book is a standard reference, listed alphabetically by herb. Every herb is discussed very, very briefly - this is a minimal reference guide at best. A paragraph is devoted to the herb, then a list of its use, then side effects, then the ending warning. That's it, really. It seems more like this is an herb-warning book than an actual herbal, as the bulk of the page will consist of cautions/warnings/contradictions, and not actual use of the herb.

Amusingly herbs are mentioned that every herbalist knows not to take without being extremely experienced, as the plants are poisonous. This book does not really mention that, instead making it appear like people and herbalists use these poisonous plants all the time and shouldn't. When it is recommended that an expert be consulted, very rarely does it say, "consult your herbalist or naturopath". Instead it's primarily "consult your physician."

I echo the reviewer who states they list any possible side effect, like 1 in a billion. You can read side effects here that won't be mentioned anywhere else, no matter how long you look. They also don’t seem too fond in listing that some of these side effects are extremely rare, or common in almost every pharmaceutical drug out there – such as nausea, headache, - or that the symptoms can be mild. Even herbs which list almost zero side effects, WITH research listed that backs them up, they still find a way not to recommend it! They may say, while research shows this moderately works and is generally safe, you can try a prescription drug that works better. Seriously! It’s a no win situation! To top even this off, they state in many herbs that no research exists, while I know for a fact there are studies out there.

Sometimes wording is effective brain washing. The first herb mentioned, Aconite, is toxic. It has been used by people in the past to commit suicide, as has every other poisonous substance. Yet they did not word it that way. Instead, “In fact, this herb was once used as a poison in arrows and has been linked to many suicides.” Linked how, as in causing them? Is this a warning against the herb, as if the suicides are the herbs fault? Even in Aloe Vera, they say that studies indicate Aloe may be useful for healing, but are quick to point out in the same sentence that studies aren’t well documented. And of course the standard follow up with the FDA recognizing the herb as generally safe, but not recommending it for any condition.

In the beginning of the book under general precautions, they state that one should not take any herb during pregnancy and that one should not take any herb for any serious condition. It would difficult to find many herbalists, homeopaths, naturopaths, or other natural care providers who agree with the above statements. Books have been written on pregnancy and childbirth involving herbs alone, and research really HAS been done. Claiming they shouldn’t be used for any serious condition is dismissing them as folklore, right up front, intended only to try on mild, harmless sniffles and bruises. It creates a mind set; a subtle one, but still a mind set.

I didn’t get the recommendation to never take an herbal cocktail, as they call it, where more than one herb is in a formula. They claimed experts don’t know how herbs mix. (?) Which experts? Surely not experts who study phytomedicine or other non-biased research in combining herbs. As most pharmaceutical companies seem to be trying to push to promote ‘drug based herbs’ they can have control and profit over, standardization is recommended in products bought. For some strange reason, it also says not to buy products over the internet, in magazines, brochures or broadcast media. Do they think Walmart grows and does their own herbs, or other natural stores? From my experience, most of the “supplements” sold in those places are the lesser quality found anywhere.

The book finishes with a few indexes of natural health supplements, including royal jelly, bee pollen, shark cartilage, etc, and recommends not to use any of these. One of the biggest slaps in the face was their stating on bee pollen never having conclusive research; it is amazingly simple for anyone to type in the words bee pollen research, or something similar, and pull up countless supportive studies.

Sadly, this book is written by pharmacists and it shows. If the pharmacist were not bias, I would welcome his/her contribution, but this is - again - not the case. It almost seems like people are hired by the drug companies to pen herbals to subtly sway people away from seeking out natural healing remedies. This should be one of the bibles for those kinds. One of my favorite things to look forward to in an herbal is personal experience a clinician has had, and of course none is found here. I would doubt the authors use many herbs at all.

All this being said, there are redeeming points here and there on this book. Some of the side effects really do exist and it is nice to see a book not run from listing a potential reaction of an herb. Some books praise plants so much they almost seem afraid of listing real contradictions and issues that can be found with them. This book also discusses a very large amount of herbs, a welcome change from those that discuss "30" or less. Each herb had a great wrap up, listing other names it's known by and commercial products it is sold as. AND, finally, the book is very reasonably priced.

If you are interested in herbs and just starting out, I recommend a much less biased book, something that's actually fair and not so one sided. This one doesn't go into enough detail on any herb - what it does and why, or any credible personal usage - and it doesn't take the time to explain much else. It's a good reference for those who are looking for a list of side effects and precautions, and that already know a little on herbs and have other herbals lining their shelves, but that’s it as a bare minimum.

4 out of 5 stars a very comprehensive work.......2002-10-15

First off, this is written by two pharmacologist, so they have a reason to scare you - medical prescriptions are BIG business for pill producers and doctors alike. They do not wish you to find there are things you can create and take yourself ( and with often much better results!!) because that cuts into their money!! So accept this book as written with prejudices. That said, it is still a good reference work for people wanting to know more about herbs. It details over 300 herbs, how they interact with drugs, a glossy for medical terms so you can full understand what they are say.
It has a nice little box that tells you why people take the herb, interactions, important points to remember, doses, what current research shows, other names and references for further reading.

A good work, when used as a companion piece for more balanced works and herbs and their usages.

Also a good reference work for writers using herbs in their books.

5 out of 5 stars The best home herbal I've found so far.......2007-04-25

David Hoffman's "The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal" is one of those rare books I keep nearby, as I'm constantly referring to it. Developed for the layman, Holistic Herbal provides sufficient overview of various herbal remedies to allow one to get their feet wet and feel competent while doing so. Part 1 of the book is a mere 16-page overview of the holistic concept - short, but if you weren't already sold on it, you wouldn't be reading the book, would you? Part 2 covers the practical aspects of herbalism, including the collection and preparation of the various herbs. This is one the areas where the work shines through, as Hoffman's descriptions and photographic accompaniments clearly and succinctly illustrate the process of making not only infusions, tinctures and decoctions, but also capsules, lozenges and suppositories. The latter part of this section also familiarizes the reader with the technical terms associated with herbalism, from abortifacients to vulneraries, in clear layman's terms. Part 3 begins the herbal itself, and its clearly expounded sections will have you referring back to it often. Each page has one to two herbs, with a photograph of the herb in question, a description of the parts used and their preparation, dosages and possible combinations with other herbs for varied therapeutic effects. Seemingly in recognition that this information could overwhelm the layman, Hoffman outlines on page 49 a home herbal medicine chest, with around 30 basic herbs as well as the (minor) equipment one will need in order to make use of them. The therapeutic index which lists the various ailments and their herbal remedies also emphasizes several herbal remedies within each category that are particularly efficacious for the ailment in question.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-05-22

What a SUPERB release. This is my medicinal herbal bible; it's quite complete, very nice graphics, and is easy to understand. It sits right next to my magickal herb books and has been an invaluable reference. HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2003-09-24

I own a later 2002 version of the 1996 book. Except for cover design the content has remained very much the same. That is one of the best available books on herbs and herbology. It shows the herb with a color photograph for those unfamiliar with what each herb looks like. It gives a detailed description of the herb amd exact formulas of how to use it singularly or in combination. There are other features like how to cultivate and dry the herbs and how it relates to a body system. One of the Best herb books available

4 out of 5 stars Well organized information, great pictures.......2003-02-17

The pictures and profiles on the herbs are a pleasure to read and look at. I would have given the book 5 stars, but there is a dearth of safety information for some herbs (e.g. comfrey, coltsfoot, lily of the valley, sassafras)which I feel is a serious omission. Someone just starting to learn about herbs may start consuming them on a regular basis before coming across the safety information elsewhere. Also, in the section on body systems, the recommended herbal recipes are accompanied by symbols which are not explained anywhere in the text (or if they are, the explanation is very well hidden because I can't find it!) Other than that, the book contains a great introduction to how the body's various systems work and also a lot of common sense advice on optimizing health (not just illness prevention). The philosophy of herbal treatment (treating the whole person as opposed to treating a symptom or a disease) is nicely discussed. Also the therapeutic index makes it easy to find herbs that you can try for specific health needs. A nice addition to the herbal library as long as you have other books that offer the safety info that this one lacks!

4 out of 5 stars a useful introduction and reference to herbal medicine.......1999-03-27

This work offers a satisfying introduction to herbalism for the general reader, and is enhanced by useful sections on medical terminology, when to gather herbs, useful addresses, and further reading. Medical practicioners will probably find that the book contains insufficient detail and inadequate references to other literature and experimental data.

The most useful part of this book - and the one offering the clearest exposition of the author's philosphy - is the 4th chapter entitled "Systems of the Body". This is the chapter that a reader with a specific complaint should turn to first. This includes sections on eleven bodily systems, including: the circulatory system; the lymphatic system; the respiratory system; ears, nose, throat and eyes; the reproductive system; and the digestive system.

Taking the digestive system to illustrate the author's approach, the whole section consists of 14 large pages. In the first two pages, the author explains with the help of illustrations the anatomy and function of the digestive system, and then gives general lifestyle advice on prevention of digestive disease. The next two pages are an introduction to the various kinds of herbs for the digestive system, among them bitters, hepatics, laxatives, emetics, demulcants, astringents and anti-spasmodics. The final 10-page subsection is titled "Patterns of Digestive Disease", in which Hoffmann offers his views on the nature of, and possible treatments for, problems as diverse as constipation, anorexia nervosa, mouth ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and gall-bladder inflammation. The herbs mentioned in this chapter can then be looked up in the preceding chapter, a traditional herbal which devotes half a page to each herb, mentioning the parts used; how and when to collect it; its chemical constituents; its actions; and preparation and dosage. I find half a page far too little, but combining this with the information in the rest of the book, the reader will usually find enough to suggest a possible remedy for common complaints - one that will usually require verification by a qualified practicioner.

The rest of the book includes chapters on "the holistic approach" and "practical herbalism". The latter explains how to gather herbs and make herbal preparations; the chemistry of herbs; the action of herbs; suggestions for a basic herbal medicine chest for the home; and a therapeutic index, which gives an alphabetical list of conditions with most of the potentially useful herbs.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2007-08-11

I was a "vinegar virgin" until I read Cal Orey's marvelous book and discovered all the wonderful uses for this common household product, both culinary and medicinal. This book is exceptionally well-written and well-researched. I was surprised to learn that vinegar can also be used as a household cleaning product and can even be of use to our pets. Thanks for writing this book that will help many of us (and our animal companions) achieve a healthier lifestyle and a longer life.

5 out of 5 stars so far so good.......2007-05-30

I've read half the book so far, bought it upon recommendation from a friend who has been taking vinegar for about 20 years since he comes from a family of diabetics and wanted to stave off its onset (he has done so successfully), i am looking to do the same thing.

Good book. Well worth the price.

I learned about the how vinegar helps to improve weight loss and digestion and can be used with pets and even as a cleaning product. This is a book that is a must-have for any health-conscious person's bookshelf. Thanks, Cal, for writing such a balanced, well-researched, understandable, and practical book.

I just got this book and it's great. I had a horrible headache when it arrived, tried the apple cider vinegar remedy and started getting immediate relief. It is full of information about the different types of vinegar and how they can help you. The range goes from home cures, household, and tips for pets and kids. The back of the book is full of really good recipes. This is not a skimpy book and it's very easy to read. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2007-02-24

I loved this book. It is well written and I've learned so much about the different kinds of vinegar. Especially great is at the end of each chapter there is a summary called "Important Healing Hints to Remember." Chapter 18 lists 55 Home Cures using vinegar and Chapter 19 lists many ways to use it around your home from cleaning and detoxing, to beauty tips, pets and more. The whole book is full of research and suggestions on how you can use and benefit from the use of versatile vinegar. I can hardly wait to try some of the recipes created by famous spa chefs at the end of the book!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must-have........2004-11-29

You will find beatiful picutures with no-bs descriptions, recipes, an overview of bodily systems and how to heal them, and quite a bit more - all in an easy-to-read and to-the-point manner. In comparison with other authors on herbs I would have to give Hofmann major credit for this book alone (he's written many other books on herbs). Buy this book if you're exploring herbs. You definitely will not be let down imo.

5 out of 5 stars A must for herbalists.......2002-07-02

I bought an earlier version of this book probably 10 years ago and have found it to be indispensible. I, however, did want a better updated version (newer herbs gleaned from research, etc) so I bought this latest edition. I am very pleased with the book, as it offers advice on preparation, harvesting, keeping all systems of the body healthy, just like the old book. It does have some improvements, though, too. This book is in color throughout, and beautifully laid out. Each herbal entry has a photo either of the plant itself or of the root. The information is very well laid out for each entry, noting each herb's properties, uses, harvesting tips, and so on. The only real quirk that bothered me at first, was that the herbs were not listed by common name, but rather by botanical name. But in the long run I'm growing to like this, as it's forcing me to better learn the Latin names, and I think it's a good safety feature, too, since the Latin name is really the only accurate one, with all the varied names gleaned from folklore, etc. Ultimately it makes finding the right plant easier and makes it safer since you're less likely to make an error in finding the right herb for a particular ailment or condition.
