Great guide, but needs further revision........2007-01-29
Out of all the pregnancy books that I own, this is by far my favorite. The layout is easy to read, which a logical, and for the most part, sequential way to present information. I would have rather the book be further divided into two sections, one of the month-by-month stuff, the other into interesting reference items that do not need to be in any kind of order. I felt that the were some things on month seven that I wish had been there earlier, and such things as multiple births (which did not apply to me) could have been elsewhere. But overall, a very useful guide.
An easy, smart read!.......2005-08-12
I have to say that this book is great for the first time mom or a mom with lots of experience. It is broken up by month, so you can see "in print" what you are going through and how to deal with it. I have purchased another book on breastfeeding, just as a "refresher course" but this book does touch on it briefly. I have a few pregnancy books, but this one is by far my favorite read.
Great, if you want to be more scared than you already are.......2005-01-25
I would NOT recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant for the first time. When you're in a state where you feel a confusing bunch of things and are hungry for information, you need to read materials that will comfort and empower you, NOT books as alarmist and cold as this one. In the first 20 pages alone, there were at least five separate paragraphs of all the horrible things that could happen if you do or don't do one thing or another. When you're in those first stages of pregnancy, when you're nervous enough as it is, you don't need a book to freak you out any more than you already are. Yes, you have to be careful, and knowing what is good and bad for you is important. But there are ways to convey that message (with warmth, humor, or a sense of comfort), and this book doesn't do any of those things.
Amazing Book!.......2003-09-26
This book is amazing! It is easy to read and you don't have to be a doctor to understand it. Instead of having to go to 1,000 different places to get the information I needed, I found it all in one place - month after month. It is great. It has been very helpful to me. I highly recommend it!!
Smart, Friendly -- Kind of Book You Want During Pregnancy!.......2003-09-10
Great book. It's written in a friendly, easy-to-read style, but is packed with the kind of practical, reassuring, and helpful information a pregnant woman craves.
I thought I'd read all there was to read in the various pregnancy books, but this latest edition with writer Paula Ford-Martin has a wealth of new information, and there are many informative tidbits throughout that add to its usefulness.
I really found the month by month format particularly helpful and easy to follow.
I highly recommend this book, good gift for a newly pregnant friend or family member. (There's also some great info for the father-to-be!)
Book Description
It should be a time of joyous anticipation–the happiest time in a woman’s life. But for many women, the joys of pregnancy are clouded by feelings of fear, sadness, and confusion. And unlike postpartum depression, which is widely portrayed in the media and embraced by the medical community, depression during pregnancy has been rarely discussed and often misunderstood–until now. In this groundbreaking book–the first to focus exclusively on depression in pregnancy–Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri, a leading reproductive psychiatrist, draws on her twenty-five years of clinical practice and research to offer hope, help, and healing–as well as a provocative, myth-shattering examination of a subject that has too long been shrouded in darkness.
The numbers are surprising: up to 70 percent of pregnant women experience some degree of depressive symptoms, and of those, 12 percent meet the diagnostic criteria for major depression. Although it is at least as common as postpartum depression, which occurs after a child’s birth, pregnancy-related depression is often cloaked in silence, shame, and denial. Pregnancy Blues lifts the veil on this heartbreaking–and very treatable–
illness, examining the key social and biological factors that can come together during pregnancy to create a climate in which depression and anxiety thrive, as well as offering the many effective treatments that are available. Discover:
• How to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression–and know when to seek help
• The role of female hormones: why women are more vulnerable to depression than men
• How depression can “hide” behind physical complaints, such as back, stomach, or even chest pain
• The unspoken connection between infertility and depression
• The antidepressant controversy: the facts on specific drugs, their safety–and when medication is the right choice
• Breastfeeding and medication–the risks and benefits
Plus helpful self-tests and resources, information on alternative treatment options–from therapy to acupuncture–and much more. A work of daring and compassion,
Pregnancy Blues challenges the underlying traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy and motherhood–and explores how those misconceptions have led to the drastic underdiagnosis and undertreatment of depression during pregnancy. A must-read for women and those who love them,
Pregnancy Blues is at once an extraordinary roadmap to healing and an eye-opening report on a medical issue that no woman can afford to miss.

never got through it.......2007-05-08
My friend recommended this to me, and I began reading it about mid-way through my pregnancy. Instead of being informative, I found it very depressing! I decided to stop reading it and looked for more positive ways to address my depression, like exercise and visiting with friends. For those who enjoy lots of information and statistics, you may appreciate this book. I, however, did not find it useful.
Informative And Beneficial.......2006-10-29
Dr. Misri has done an excellent job of educating women and men about depression in women in general, depression during pregnancy, and depression after pregnancy. She clearly shatters the myth that pregnancy is a time of joy for all women by offering stories from her clinical practices, research, and lectures. She offers the pregnant woman and couple at large a thorough education about the risks and benefits of continuing or even starting treatment during and after pregnancy. She also made sure to stress that depression doesn't discriminate and even affected a social worker who used to remove infants from parents, a well known OB/GYN, and a Therpaist! Any one can experience it, there is nothing to be ashamed of, but the good news is that she explains your many options along with your many possibilities. And finally Dr. Misri does indeed value her patients and all women as she states that she finds hope and encouragement in her patients, and respect them seeing them as courageous people trying to manage an emotional illness in addition to other challenges of pregnancy and parenthood.
Amazing Essential Reference Plus enjoyable read.......2006-06-22
I love this book. There are others that have gotten awards for pregnancy and depression and I don't know why. This is the A#1 book. It is written from a multi-cultural perspective. It is not fear based but filled with great information. I have not read any other book by anyone with as much experience as this author. She sees over 3,000 women a year in her Canadian based pregnancy depression clinic. She has so many resources to share. She treats depression as a regular normal health condition. She does not act like all medicine is bad. She does not make you feel evil for selecting to take care of yourself. She is just lovely. This book has a fantastic balance of clinical information - in easy to understand language and cultural nuances of birth and pregnancy. It really takes in the whole person. I love this book. I wish I would have had it before I got pregnant or I would have had an easier pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Real World Advice and Anecdotes.......2002-06-03
After the surprise announcement by my wife of "I'm pregnant" a couple of weeks ago, I knew I needed to get some accurate info fast. Especially since this was our first and our wife is in the "high risk" catagory. After reading reviews on Amazon, I chose this book and am very happy with my selection.
At work, had I mentioned that my wife was pregnant with our first child and a male co-worker with 3 sons started laughing and giving me advice. His first was that Lamaze was a waste...his wife was in labor and Lamaze coaching lasted for about 2 minutes until she screamed at him, "Stop telling me to breathe and just rub my back!" He then proceeded to tell me several items they had purchased and had only used once or twice.
This book arrived a week later and I brought it to work. The same co-worker grabbed it and said, nothing in this book will tell how it really is like. Then he read an anectdotal story of a wife telling her husband to stop with the Lamaze and just hold her hand. He kept reading and agreed that it gives real world advice and is a great book.
My wife is reading and enjoying it too. You won't be disappointed.
Inspires Confidence! A book for every new dad!.......2000-11-15
If you know anyone who has just found out their wife is pregnant....this is the book they absolutely will need. So many mom's have showers and receive gifts for the baby. Why not include this book for the dad! Not only does this book enlighten fathers, mothers will want to steal this book to refer to all the great sections on baby/toddler development. The charts on page 52 and 66 organize the developmental advances a baby goes through.
The first chart shows everything from how newborns communicate to when you can expect your baby to take their first steps. The Toddler chart spans the time from 15 months to 5 years and discloses when your child will enjoy rhyming games or when they will start to name everyday objects.
Many of the sections in this book are very thoughtful and encourage a dad to consider the child in his life and make this new life a high priority. This book is also filled with humor guys will really relate to.
Through the seven chapters, men will learn what it takes to be a dad, how to be a good prenatal dad, what to expect at the birth, what changes to expect in the first two weeks and then what to look for in the first year and toddler/preschool years. The "Many Faces of Fatherhood" is a modern look at fatherhood. Adoption, divorce, unwed fathers, stepfathers and widowed fathers are also given some great advice.
"The most important thing you can do to ensure your child develops good emotional health is to show your love for him or her. Do this, and your child will feel valued, loved, and respected." --page 68
The last chapter is "For Mom's Eyes Only." It explains the "Myths" of parenting and how to deal with them in a logical way. Mothers and fathers will also love the "10 ways to make time for your children" list on page 13. Turn the page over and you will see why a good marriage is so important to a child. The Index is great for the busy parent who wants to find answers fast. Look up everything from car seats to language skills.
This book gives real world tips from fathers on how to be a positive influence in the life of their child. It guides men through pregnancy and childbirth and has practical advice on how men can help care for an infant. Truly, this is moral support to encourage men to become the best fathers they can be.
I purchased this book to give to my cousin's husband. They are having their first baby in December and I could not think of a better gift to give to a baby! Yes, this is truly a gift for the child. A dad who has this information is going to be one of the most enlightened dad's on the planet! For mothers, look for the New Baby Book, created by Mothers for Mothers. These books present parenting as an exciting journey. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to start reading this book as soon as they start to consider having children. If you just found out your wife is pregnant, or if you are the new mom who is buying this book for your husband, Congratulations! You are going to love this resource.
Practical.......1999-10-27
Most of the parenting books I've looked at take a lot more text to get across the same amount of content. I liked the friendly, relaxed approach. Most of all, I liked the specific ideas and suggestions for me as a father.
Finally....a helpful book for new fathers........1999-10-11
As a clinical psychologist who works with children and families, and as a father myself, I applaud the authors' encouragement of fathers to actively participate in their children's lives. This book offers a wide variety of practical and useful tips and hints on how fathers can interact with their young children, how they can play a meaningful role in their children's lives, and how they can work together with their wives in day-to-day parenting. I enjoyed the developmental perspective, as the authors discuss fatherhood from the mother's pregnancy through the preschool years. I also appreciated the special chapter, "The Many Faces of Fatherhood", acknowledging fathers in circumstances that are different than those of married, biological fathers. The authors use good humor in their easy-to-understand, commonsense advice throughout the book, and cite research-related information when appropriate. I would highly recommend this easy-to-read book to any new father (and even perhaps to fathers who already have children) and I plan to recommend this book to families that I work with in my private practice.
Dr. Horn gives some helpful tips to new fathers........1999-09-23
I like the fact that Dr. Horn discusses the importance of including fathers in the birth, infant care and child raising process. This book will help fathers define themselves and expand traditional roles.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Superb!!.......2007-09-18
I can't say enough good things about this book. The menus alone make the book worth the purchase price!!! If you can find it, buy it. The author knows what a pregnant woman needs to eat, and why, and what proper nutrition can prevent - eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, toxemia, underweight babies, poor breast milk production etc. This is a fabulous book. I read it first when my sister was pregnant in 1991. I've kept a copy ever since and given copies to several pregnant friends and relatives. Bravo!!!
Read This One.......2005-09-06
When I was pregnant with my first child (25 years ago!) I read a gazillion books about all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. This book would be at the top of the list. The information about diet and nutrition for pregnant women (particularly in the prevention of toxemia) was easy to understand and backed by solid research/clinical observations. Assuming this edition is similar to the one I read, it also included a thorough list of the nutritional content of common foods.
Highly recommended!
Avoid toxemia.......2003-01-30
Learn how to avoid toxemia (pre-eclampsia) in pregnancy. The main point is to eat salt and eat enough protein. The author's doctor husband did research for decades and cured toxemia by simply supplying the salt shaker and adding meat to the diet. Read the details. Get some recipes at the end of the book. Read example stories.
THIS BOOK SAVES THE LIVES OF WOMEN AND UNBORN CHILDREN..........1999-09-30
This book discusses the REAL cause of preeclampsia-protein calorie deficientcy. It discusses the how and why and what to do for preeclampsia prevention. Any respectable midwife already knows this, and if you can find this book, you can too. If you've had preeclampsia and want good advice on not geeting it again call Dr Brewer at 1 802 388 0276.This author and retired obgyn is glad to get the word out on prevention of this lifetaking pregnancy complication.

Book Description
Drawing on her experience as a mother, a yoga teacher, and a physical therapist, author Judith Lasater, Ph.D. presents a comprehensive and easy-to-follow program of yoga poses and breathing practices. These will help the mother to stay flexible and healthy throughout the pregnancy, remain present during the challenges of labor and delivery, and care for herself during the postpartum period. In addition, the author has created a special section called "Mantras for Mom and Baby," where the mother can explore heart-centered practices, one for each month during pregnancy and baby's first year.
Customer Reviews:
Not much there.......2005-03-18
I'm a yoga teacher, about to teach a prenatal class. I bought this book because Judith Lasater is an excellent teacher and I hoped to get some ideas for my class. The 23 pages of this book devoted to prenatal yoga were quite helpful. I just expected more. This is billed as a Rodmell Press "Yoga Shorts" and it is. The book would probably be most helpful for a pregnant woman who is new to yoga. She would learn 6 poses, 3 of them supported. For everyone else, I'd recommend going with Lasater's RELAX AND RENEW.
Book Description
T. Berry Brazelton, America's most highly regarded and deeply valued pediatrician, is a national treasure. Millions of parents and physicians have used and praised his groundbreaking books on infancy, parenthood, and early childhood. What Every Baby Knows is without question Brazelton's most exciting and valuable book.
In What Every Baby Knows, Dr. Brazelton takes five families and really opens the doors of their private lives. In the course of the family histories and in the follow-up visits that Brazelton pays to each family two years later, we come to know these parents and children as individuals -- their stubborn worries, their struggles to adapt to change, their successes at resolving problems. These family histories serve as the framework for Brazelton's illuminating discussions of such crucial family issues as:
--sibling rivalry
-- divorced parents
-- prematurity
-- colic
-- encouraging independence
-- late speech development, and more
What Every Baby Knows offers every reader answers to their questions about the real, day-to-day issues that his or her own family faces. The problems Brazelton identifies in the lives of his five families are the universal problems of family life. And the resolutions he describes are as reassuring as they are workable in all family situations. What Every Baby Knows will help all families share the rewards and happiness of life together.
Customer Reviews:
If I were to recommend one book on parenting.......2003-04-01
this is the one. Dr. Brazleton difers from most self-proclaimed baby and parenting "experts" in several respects. Firstly, he not only advocates that parenting each child is unique and needs to be individualized, he encourages that this philosophy be put in practice. In contrast to, as an example, the Sears, who state that the methods they proscribe are the only good and valid methods and that anything else is tantamount to abuse or neglect, Dr. Brazleton actually encourages that parents develop a relationship with their children based on the rhythms and nature of the child. The nature of the parent is not brushed aside but, instead, is recognized as an equal part of the whole relationship with the child. Secondly, Dr. Brazleton's professional reputation and expertise are exemplary and encompass a vast amount of direct contact with children and parents, clinical and research experience. Dr. Brazleton does not fall into the Sears trap of "Research shows..." while failing to provide any sort of evidence that research DOES show, or that there is even any research. Dr. Brazleton balances practical perspective with that of clinical and research perspective and provides supporting sources for his claims. He also recognizes the limitations and conditions under which his claims hold, and those under which modifications are necessary. If you are looking for one book on parenting and children, start here. My bet is that you'll be very glad you did.
Common sense information and advice.......1997-12-12
Dr. Brazelton has a loving, common sense approach to infant development. He offers constructive advice and reassurance to new parents. This book is extremely helpful to first time mothers.
Book Description
With Run, Baby, Run, Eclipse Award-winning author Bill Heller issues a hard-hitting call for action to the Thoroughbred and Standardbred industries.
Heller examines Lasix® studies done by veterinary researchers; talks with top breeders, owners, trainers, and race officials from the Thoroughbred and Standardbred industries; and looks closely at the recommendations of the AAEP. He explains why horses bleed, and explores the effectiveness of Lasix and its questionable use in Two-Year-Olds. He addresses the issue of whether the drug is used for other purposes as a masking agent for other drugs, or as a speed enhancer and seeks the answer to the questions of how Lasix impacts racehorses.
This book is a must for every racehorse owner, breeder and handicapper. In a study of more than 48,000 Thoroughbred starters, Heller reveals that more than 92 percent raced on Lasix, a potent diuretic which can cause a horse to lose as much as 20 pounds before a race.
Ostensibly, Lasix is used to stop a horse from bleeding in its lungs, a common problem. But Lasix does not stop bleeding and, in some horses, doesn't reduce it. Lasix can, however, improve performance drastically from weight loss alone, flush other drugs out of a horse's system and mask others that remain by diluting them. Even more troublesome is that Lasix use may hide a horse's physical problems while doing nothing to heal them.
The argument to allow Lasix on race day in the United States centered on the idea that by helping bleeders, they would be able to race longer. Instead the opposite has happened.
Average starts per runner went into a precipitous decline just as Lasix became popular on the backstretch in the early '70s and, in 2001, reached a new low.
Many horsemen believe Lasix should not be used on two-year-olds or allowed in stakes races. There is a mountain of evidence to support them. Now, for the first time, that evidence is here.

Great Resource, If You Haven't Bought It Already.......2007-08-18
Written as part of the "Everything" series of books, the "pregnancy" volume attempts to cover all topics "pregnancy" related, and it does. The problem is that it has been done, several times before. I do like the layout of the book and found it very easy to read. The best part was the little aside pieces of information that are found in the "diaper pin" graphics. There are some really neat pieces of information for a new mom.
Updated 2nd Edition Now Available.......2003-10-04
A completely rewritten and enormously improved second edition of The Everything Pregnancy Book is now available. The new book is by Paula Ford-Martin, with Dr. Elisabeth Aron, and is available on Amazon.
Misinformation and inappropriate recommendations.......2003-03-05
I read the first several chapters of this book and found several errors and some misinformation. For example, the book warns that marathon runners raise their core temperature an average of 37.4 degrees farenheit. Really? My core temperature when running goes up to 134.9 degrees? Wow. The consulting doctor also gives a recommendation for women to only gain 20 - 25 pounds during pregnancy so they can go back to prepregnancy weight "at delivery". Not only does this go against the recommendations given by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (average weight gain of 25-35 pounds) but going back to prepregnancy weight is unhealthy and impractical for women, especially if they plan to breastfeed, in which case they NEED fat stores so that their milk is healthy. I will be returning this book and will go back to reading "The Pregnacy Book" by William and Martha Sears.
Check everything out with your doctor.......2002-06-10
I was very disappointed with the book and found that a lot of the information was completely contradictory to advice from my doctor and mid-wife. Of course, when pregnant, you should always check info out with your doctor, but of all the literature I have read, the advice in this book was most often out of sync with the other literature and professional advice I received.
A Decent Book For Needed Infomation About Pregnancy.......2001-12-21
I enjoyed this book a great deal. I found it not only to be on the level of a person who may not know a lot about human physiology, but also for people who may have a background in that area. (So many pregnancy books are patronizing.)
I think this book does a great job of explaining how to cope with morning sickness, backaches, and other small ailments associated with pregnancy. We all have little worries about our unborn baby and this book offers information that can help ease the mind. Plus it is nice to be able to walk into the doctor's office armed with some knowledge and knowing what questions to ask. A confident woman can have a confident labor when she knows what is going on.

My son loves this book........2006-08-17
We are getting ready to have our second baby & bought this book to help prepare my toddler son. He wants to read it almost every night!
Great Illustrations! .......2006-05-28
This is my favorite book for introducing young children to having a new baby in the family because it is completely unbiased towards birthing options. Any mother could read this book whether she is planning a homebirth, birth at a birth center, or in a hospital. Since my births fit in all three categories, I appreciate having a book that doesn't tell my kids that birth has to happen a certain way. The book also talks about after the birth: how children can help their mommies, how mommy will feel, etc. which hasn't been something covered in other books I've looked at. My daughter really enjoys this book, especially with the nine-year old illustrations!
