5 out of 5 stars Worth the read... For the real dad to be... (moms to be can read too...).......2007-08-27

Firstly, ignore the TWO, yes TWO, negative reviews... There is always the couple of folks who "just don't get it." I picked this up a Baby's r US and thumbed through it while waiting to go on the "baby shower registration" escapade... I enjoyed the book so much, I bought it from Amazon.com. (only one copy at the store and it was beat up.)
The author talks writes in lingo that is not meant for the "wimpy" guy or the guy is so full of himself that he honestly believes that his stuff don't stink. This is written for the Football/Hockey watchin', beer drinkin', pool playin', laugh out loud kind of guy. The survival tips listed, both before and after the birth, were actually covered in our hospital's childbirth class... Reinforced actually, as I had already read them all here... This isn't an owners manual for your NFU (new family unit), but will show you some great (and some not so) things about to come your way.

5 out of 5 stars Girls like it too........2007-06-25

Guys aren't the only ones that like potty humor. I got this at my baby shower and read it out loud. We all laughed like hell, and there wasn't a drop of wine in the house! DH liked it too, BTW. ;-}

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Dads to Be.......2007-03-19

I bought this for my husband. It is the first baby related material that I have seen him read willingly. He chuckles out loud and actually starts conversations with me about the material. Good info, put into words that a guy can relate too. The humor takes away some of that aprehension that a lot of new dads face.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC HELPER FOR DADS.......2007-02-20

I've gone through a number of these types of books and this one is by far the best one out there. The author keeps it light, at the same time conveying what's really important to the new dad with honesty and a brutal sense of humor. It makes the new dad feel like he has some company in this new and alien experience of having kids. After reading it, I recommended it to all my buddies whoare in the same boat. It truly takes the edge off of first time fatherhood. Nice job!

5 out of 5 stars Good satire and short on the new-age stuff. Perfect for guys........2007-02-15

I got started late on the whole fatherhood thing. I retired from the USAF at 39 and had my first daughter shortly thereafter. I got this book and a few others from my girlfriend and this one is my kind of read. Nothing wrong with new-age books, but they just aren't for me. The humor is spot-on and clearly a jab at military lingo, which deserves jabbing. This is definitely not for the stiff-neck Frank Burns-types. Also, the definitions in the back are excellent. I knew nothing (and I mean nothing) about babies and now I've got a whole new vocabulary. One warning..if you're extra sensitive, don't buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's Book with a message.......2007-02-17

This book is an excellent book to read your children. Not only is it entertaining, it actually has a valuable message for your children. Imagine being able to entertain and teach at the same time. What a novel concept!

5 out of 5 stars Love these books!.......2007-02-01

I've been reading them since I was a child, now my little girls have all of my old ones and we continue to add to the colection. GREAT BOOKS!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Book - a review of "The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings".......2006-02-18

I am totally baffled as to why this Berenstain series is called "First Time Books". Nothing could be further from the truth. The vocabulary is sophisticated (words like 'Killer Koyote', 'Avenger', 'Equestrienne') and there are way too many words per page to make this appropriate even for a first grader. [In fact, at least one of the kid's reviews here was written by a 10 year old!]

Note: Take a look at the page offered in Amazon's "Search inside this book" feature to judge for yourself.

And while I like the moral of this book, I find that it suffers from a reversal of heart at the end. In this case, after having made the point (very well I thought) that children *should* be thankful for what they have; the story suddenly reverses course and has Mama and Papa caving in and planning to buy the desired toys anyway. What gives?

To me this counters the good message of being thankful, with the supposition that if they `just wait' children will eventually get what they desire.

from the book:

So while Papa set the table and Mama started supper,
Sister went upstairs to play with her Bearbie doll, and
Brother tried to reach the next level on one of his video
games.

"You know, my dear," said Papa. "There are birthdays and
Christmas coming. Do you have any ideas for the cubs?"

"I thought perhaps a Just Married Bearbie for Sister and
a couple of video games for Brother might be nice," Mama
said. "What do you think?"

"I think we should count our blessings too," said Papa.

I don't know what other children make of this mixed message, but mine were happy that the cubs were going to get what they wanted.

Four Stars. [B-] The book starts off very well. It *does* convey the message that we should be thankful for what we have and not want new things all the time just because our friends get/have them. But in my opinion, you will have to have a discussion about the ending to make sure that message sticks.

3 out of 5 stars Counting blessings.......2006-02-04

I think that this book was good. i thought that this book was good becauseit was mabey helping poeple count there blessings.I think that you should read this book if you want to read a little kid book.It is a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Not the first time........2006-01-04

This book is ok, but I think they've already learned about "counting their blessings" in "Get the Gimmies." That's why I gave it a three!

5 out of 5 stars Reward Jar.......2007-07-25

Sister Bear bites her nails. She finds it hard to quit. An idea is come up that every time she does not bite her nails, she gets money put into a jar. Then that money is hers to keep.

5 out of 5 stars child guidance is suggested.......2007-06-12

i find the berenstain bears book collection educational. this one was (surprisingly) an eye-opener for me as a parent as well. i followed the tip given here to stop my child from bitting his fingernails - and it worked.

3 out of 5 stars Good children's book, but puts ideas in kids' heads.......2004-07-20

As always, Stan and Jan Berenstain do an excellent job writing an entertaining children's story. They add a lesson to it, but I wouldn't feel right not saying this book can actually put the idea of nail biting into a child's head. I am a 20 year old confirmed nail-biter, and reading this book in Kindergarden was my first introduction to it. I still rate it 3 stars because it is well written and entertaining, but this lesson may entice some children rather than get them to avoid a bad habit.

4 out of 5 stars Hard To Break........2002-09-09

Bad habits are hard to break is a lesson that many adults don't even know very well. Most young children don't even have a clue what a habit is, let alone know the difference between a bad habit and a good one. This edition of The Berenstain Bears not only explains what a habit is, it also illustrates the difference between good and bad habits, and offers a helpful way how possibly to break a bad habit youngsters may have.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and meaningful!.......2000-09-23

Once again Stan and Jan have made a complex issue simple for the child. I love the way they explain what a habit is and why it is hard to break. Sister's bad habit is biting her nails but we substitute whatever we want (nose picking etc.)and our children (age 2 and 6) roar with laughter as they learn that a habit isn't easy to quit...but you can do it with practice. We love this book. I even gave it to a college student who bites her nails and she loves it too.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A change of perspective........2002-09-09

The book opens with Papa and Mama Bear in grumpy moods. Papa yells at Brother for taking the sports section of the paper, Mama yells at Sister for talking on the phone too long, Mama and Papa yell at the cubs for playing with their food and for not giving them notes from school on time. The cubs go to school the next day and have to prepare for the Parent's Night Talent Show. After talking with their friends, they decide to put on a play called The Trouble With Grownups, which is the hit of the night. The show reminds the parents what it was like to be a cub. In the morning, the parents switch roles with the cubs so that they can see what it's like to be a parent. At the end they remind the cubs that they will probably be parents someday too, which gives the cubs something to think about.

The book never explains why Mama and Papa are so grumpy. However, most children can probably relate because people don't always explain why they are in a bad mood. However, Sister Bear's creation of a bowl from mashed potatoes for gravy was a brilliant example of creativity and it seemed more confusing to me that she got yelled at about it.

As a sidenote, I enjoyed this book a little more than I thought I would because it also briefly explains all the work that goes into putting on a play.

Overall, this is a good book for both parents and children to read together; it may help children see what it's like to be an adult and it may help parents remember what it's like to be a kid.

4 out of 5 stars The Trouble With Children.......2001-04-27

The Trouble With Grownups is a good childrens book that every child must read. It will teach them the importance of respecting their parents and show them that even though they may think their life is hard.Their not alone parents also can have a ruff time. In this book brother and sister bear learn this and learn how they've been acting. Their parents start acting like them to show them what it would be like the other way around. I to read this as a child and I to learned my leason. Kids have it to easy these days maybe if they read this book it will teach them the importance of parents and respect.

4 out of 5 stars The Trouble With Children.......2001-04-27

The Trouble With Grownups is a good book that every parent should read to their child. Brother Bear and sister bear feel that their parents are to hard on them and let them do nothing. Like most kids they don't relize that it's hard being a parent to. Brother Bear and sister bear get a taste of their own medicine when their parents start acting like them. Finally the cubs relize what things their parents can go through. I think this is a good book because it can teach a child the means of respect in words they can understand. This is a fully illistrated well written book. I to read this as a child and it help me understand the importance of parents and respect. Every child should pick up this book and read it because maybe it will teach them to me a little better to their parents.

3 out of 5 stars Trouble With Kids.......2001-04-27

The Trouble With Grownups is a book that teaches you about the hard leason every child has to over come, that yes sometimes their parents will say,"No" or "Don't Do That." This book is a great book to read to your child. It will help them understand that parents have a hard time as much as children do. It is a fully illistrated book that has a great story that can capture the child's imagination. I to read this as a child and it helped me to respect my parents and family. The greatest part in this book is when the parents turn around and start acting like children, to show the cubs how hard it is to be a parent. Maybe, if every parent did this we would have more respectful children. All in all this is a great book to read and highly recomend people to read the other Berenstain Bears books.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable.......2001-03-15

This presents the kind of "moral lesson" familiar to those who have read other books in the series. (The moral is presented as a rhyme on the title page: "Grownups and cubs get quite a surprise when they see themselves through the others' eyes.")

The book opens with some very grumpy parents getting angry (and petty) with their kids: Brother: "What eating him?" Mother: "...and furthermore, I'll thank you not to refer to your father as 'him.'" Five pages later, Father "roars" at brother, "Food isn't supposed to be interesting...it's supposed to be food."

The kids, who "had no doubt that their parents loved them, [but] they were a little difficult to get along with sometimes," then enact a play to show their parents what it all sounded like to them. Fine, and there's a few nice lines about getting costumes ready, but then the adults give their kids the same medicine they received: The next day, wearing oversized version of Brother and Sister's clothes, they complain, scream, jump up and down, and leave things strewn all over the living room. Yes, sinking to the children's level is ALWAYS a mature, adult way to handle your kids. (Please note sarcasm here.)

It's not exactly harmful, nor does the book pretend to be a parent's guidebook, but I found this version of "perspective-taking" contrived and annoying. The book isn't very clever, and the pictures are flat and lacking in imagination. Only for a real Berenstain Bears fan.

Dr. Miriam Stoppard is one of Britain's best-known childcare and health experts, and the American edition of The New Parent is bound to please an eager readership. Like so many books from DK Publishing, this Essential Guide for All First-Time Mothers and Fathers is a delight to the eyes. A large but not unwieldy hardcover, it is simply much more elegantly designed than most books in the parenting genre. Color photographs and top-quality charts and diagrams set off text that has been grouped into useful, easily digestible chunks. Topics on every new parent's mind are featured in double-page spreads with titles such as "What Happens in Labor," "The First Day," "Breastfeeding," and "Emergency First Aid," accompanied by well laid-out information on a baby's physical, emotional, and cognitive development through the first year. At times, the text may be a little too simplistic, and there are heftier parenting titles that carry more detailed information. The publishers may also have underestimated the jarring effect of inserting American text into a British book as a means of creating the U.S. edition. Essential information--for example, on maternity rights--has of course been rewritten entirely for the U.S. audience, but some recommendations, such as when to start giving solid food, are sharply different from standard American practice. And besides, American strollers just don't look like that! Nonetheless, The New Parent is a useful introductory book for parents expecting their first baby. --Richard Farr

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not near as good as all the reviews say.......2007-03-04

It's true that this book is wonderfully organized, and the colorful pictures are great. It's full of a lot of correct information. But for me, the bad outweighed the good.

1) Grammar is horrible in this book. Sentence structure is almost non-existant. The person who proofed this seriously needs more practice.
2) some of the advise was completely off the way. You would just have to see it to believe some of the advise.

All n all, I say spend your money on another book!!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for moms AND dads!.......2001-04-24

This is my favorite Dr. Miriam Stoppard book because it is wonderfully organized and has plenty of great photographs and colorful blocks of information. The charts on everything from "What diagnostic tests are," to "What to look out for as your child develops," make this book the most practical book I have seen.

If I had to buy one book for a new parent, this would be it. I love all of Dr. Stoppard's books, but this one is truly a book for mom and dad. This is also a book that focuses on the needs of the parents as well as the needs of the baby. The first-time parents concerns are examined and Dr. Miriam deals with every aspect from preparing for pregnancy to bonding with the baby as a family. The father's role in the childcare is also discussed in more detail. This takes a look at how parenthood will change your life and it offers constructive help on keeping your relationship alive.

This book includes information on the needs of working women, house husbands and single parents. You will learn how to be a caregiver, supporter and teacher, as well as a loving partner. What I love most about this book is that it focuses on the "decision to become a parent." This is much more than just deciding to have a baby. This is about bringing a child into the world and about creating an entire new person.

The process of pregnancy is also fascinating. You will want to check this section throughout your pregnancy. Issues during pregnancy are discussed in great detail. On many of the pages you will also find a block that gives information about how fathers can take an active role.

There is a section on "Sex and Parenthood" which gives some sage advice if you don't want to immediately become pregnant again. A section is devoted to PPD (Postpartum Depression) and explains why this happens and how to deal with it. The best part of this book is the large charts which show the development of your new child. It focuses in on "mind, mobility, coordination, social skills and speech." In this way, you can keep track of how your child is developing and the beauty of these charts is that there is a whole section on "How You Can Help."

This book shows you what it is really like to have a baby! Highly recommended if your goal is to enjoy life and have the knowledge you need to enjoy life as a family.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book I have been looking for!.......1998-12-13

I had been looking for a book that will help in showing me all aspects of being a new parent. This book covered it all and then some. I am planning to have children in the next few years and this book has helped with all of my questions. I think the veiwpoints for the fathers makes this a book even the fathers will be excited to read. I have already read it many times and I keep it close by so I may just thumb through it. I just lent it to a friend and I am already missing it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crazy quilts!.......2006-06-22

Mama Bear has decided she wants to open her own quilt shop because she loves to make quilts. Plus, she is very creative and tailors each quilt to fit the person. (Brother has an airplane quilt.) This book teaches little ones that you can achieve what you love to do. Just like Mama Bear.

5 out of 5 stars Mama Bear rocks!!!.......2006-01-12

Unlike one of the previous readers, I am thrilled to know that Mama Bear has been able to start her own business as a quiltmaker as well as rear her children and maintain her home with Papa Bear. Because Mama is using her skills and talents as a quiltmaker, she is able to work for herself, create her own hours and still be there for the cubs; which UNTIL they are grown and on their own, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT job she could have. If she had become a "brain surgeon", she would definitely have to put her family on the backburner for patients and others. Mama is a true hero, an example of a woman who knows how to prioritize her life, and still be independent. Family first, career later. Way to go, Mama!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Eva.......2001-09-16

This book is a true classic. Everything about it raises the standard for all other works of literature.

4 out of 5 stars Quilters will get a chuckle out of this.......2000-06-30

Like most of the Berenstain Bear books, the main subject is a matter that worries children or parents. In this case, the stay-at-home mama gets a job, classically over the objections of Papa. The children, excuse me, cubs, express their concerns about this major change and mama tells them how she hopes to cope. Cope they do, and Mama is very happy with her decision to open a quilting shop.

The amusing part is that Mama gets a lot of quilting done as she prepares to open her shop! How does she do it? Most of us find it tough to parent two children and sew, let alone finish a half dozen quilts at the same time as we clean up a shop and organise a business.

The small flaws of this book, as with the rest of the Berenstain Bears books, don't discourage my daughters, and don't detract from the main thrust of the discussion. That is the point of this series, after all.

5 out of 5 stars The Berenstain Bears and Mama's New Job.......2000-05-29

The Berenstain Bears and Mama's New Job is but another great book from the Berenstain Bears series. In the beginning, the cubs are a tad apprehensive about the idea of their mama leaving them to start a career as a quilt-maker. But, with a little time and thinking, the two realize they are not losing their mama when she ventures into the career world after all. This book is great and has a wonderful message, as do all the books in the series. The illustrations are wonderfully done as well. I would recommend this book to anybody with children.

      Book Description

What happens when Sister Bear noticies that Mama's lap is shrinking? No, it's not that Mama is eating too much salmon and honey comb. Mama is going to have a baby! With a little help from Mama and Dr. Gert, Sister learns about the birds and the bees...and sonograms, too!

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Worst birds and bees book I've ever read.......2004-03-26

I love Berenstain bears! That said, I couldn't believe how horribly they muddled a topic like birds and bees. If they didn't want to write about it, then they shouldn't have. Instead, they have mother have sister ask the doctor about it. It is a touchy enough subject without books like this implying to kids that it is such an embarassing topic that mothers shouldn't even talk to their kids about it, only doctors! The doctor then answers her questions vaguely by saying the baby comes out the "birth canal". Like that tells sister, or any kid reading it, any more than they already know! Then it ignores the topic. Jan and Stan could have easily written the book by glancing on the topic, and made a good book leaving out asking the doctor questions that weren't really answered. If they were going to talk about it, talk about it, instead of leaving parent and kid with a bad taste of - oh this stuff is too "embarasing" to even mention in a book. Nothing wrong with not mentioning it, just shouldn't mention it if they're just going to blush and avoid it. I think it makes the idea of the birds and the bees even scarier than our culture already has. It does not do this out of respect or sacredness of the topic, as it delves into it, just doesn't say anything about it, but lets talk about this topic but it's too scarry to really talk about in anything but vague terms. (giggle giggle) The way it is written reminds me of a bunch of middle schoolers trying to talk about something they feal they shouldn't and are to embarassed to say anything about!

3 out of 5 stars Cute intro to adding a baby to the family, but..........2000-03-25

I read this to both my girls, and the beginning is wonderful and age appropriate. However, in the middle of the book it goes into a birds and bees explanation that was completely confusing my daughters (4 and 7). They wanted to know what that had to do with the baby in my tummy. The answer is nothing, really, I felt it muddied the issue rather than clarifying. I also thought the cliffhanger was sort of a cheap trick to get us to buy another book.

      4 out of 5 stars Baby Berenstain.......2000-03-03

I would give this 5 stars if they hadn't made it a cliff hanger. All in all it's a great book. Asppecialy if your pregneant with a baby and want to share this special time with your kids.
