    Book Description

First published in 1968, The Battered Child quickly became a landmark work. Our awareness of child abuse today is due in no small part to the remarkable impact of its first and subsequent editions.

The new edition of this classic text continues the legacy. While updating and significantly adding to previous editions, the fifth edition retains the multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach that initially set the work apart. This new edition contains chapters from professionals in such diverse fields as pediatrics, psychiatry, legal studies, and social work that reflect the past decade's extraordinary advances in research and techniques. Twenty of the book's 30 chapters are entirely new, while the remaining material has been extensively revised.

Part I provides a historical overview of child abuse and neglect as well as background material on the cultural, psychiatric, social, economic, and legal contexts of child maltreatment. Part II discusses the processes of assessing cases of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect from the unique perspectives of all the professionals involved, including teachers, pediatricians, and social workers. Part III describes intervention and treatment, focusing on legal issues, investigative procedures, and therapeutic processes, while Part IV addresses prevention and policy issues.

Previous editions of The Battered Child have earned the labels of "a classic" and a "Bible." With its up-to-date information, unequaled scope, and contributions from experts on every aspect of child abuse, the fifth edition of this cornerstone text is even more essential to the field than its predecessors.

"Comprehensive and up-to-date."—David Cottrell, British Journal of Psychiatry

"A valuable contribution to the field of abuse and neglect"—Prasanna Nair, Journal of the American Medical Association

For every parent who has ever felt helpless to protect a child from abusive individuals, this resource book offers empowerment. In plainspoken language with an easy-to-follow format A Parent's & Teacher's Handbook on Identifying and Preventing Child Abuse explains what is and in not abuse, and describes in detail the physical and behavioral indicators of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. If offers practical strategies for introducing the subject of personal body safety with children and outlines clear-cut steps to take when a child discloses that he or she or a friend has been abused.

Drawing on the advice of real families who have dealt with abuse, the handbook describes legal and social system processes for child abuse cases, helping parents understand "what happens now".

Stressing the importance of prevention, this book offers guidance for everyday life decisions, such as, how to choose a daycare or babysitter, how to keep discipline from becoming physically or emotionally abusive and how to deal with abusive ex-spouses or relatives. A chapter on the Internet familiarizes parents with cyberspace and how molesters use chat rooms and web sites to contact children. 5 out of 5 stars "Must" Reading for Anyone who Works with kids...........2001-08-08

This book is "must" reading for anyone who has children or who is working with children. Written in a clear, concise style, the book is an easy reference to determining IF you are seeing child abuse symptoms, and HOW to deal with the situation if child abuse is present. Written by an M.D., the author is well qualified to show examples of "abuse" wounds versus regular scrapes and bruises a child would suffer. There are excellent drawings to illustrate those areas of the body which would show physical or sexual abuse. Not only is this an excellent reference for detecting abuse, this book gives the reader good advice on how to deal with the situation, who to contact, how to verify what you are suspecting, etc. I found this book to be the best reference document yet on understanding this most sensitive subject.

"A Practical Guide to the Evaluation of Child Physical Abuse and Neglect is an excellent work of several young and dedicated authors who have studied child abuse and now stand ready to help others. . . . It stresses the recognition and initial management of child abuse . . . and is written clearly and succinctly. It follows a logical pattern that helps the practitioner in what is often a difficult and emotionally charged clinical situation. Although it is a compact reference, it is comprehensive and meticulous in its attention to detail. It is a book that will help the reader. . . . I congratulate the authors on their outstanding accomplishment and the publisher for its continued dedication to helping the helping professionals deal the complex and challenging field of practice. All have helped children and their parents, there can be no more noble or important a goal."

--from the Foreword by Stephen Ludwig, M.D., F.A.A.P.

"This book is a major contribution to the field of child maltreatment, as was its predecessor on sexual abuse. These two comprehensive, concise, up-to-date volumes will be widely used by health care, legal, and social work professionals to guide their work in assessing allegations of abuse and neglect."

--Amy C. Richardson, M.D., Director, Case Western Reserve University

Child Protection Resource Center, Cleveland, Ohio

        and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics,

        Case Western Reserve University

"A Practical Guide to the Evaluation of Physical Abuse and Neglect" by Angelo Giardino et al. is an exceptionally comprehensive text to guide practitioners in the assessment and understanding of the various aspects of child abuse and neglect. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the general evaluation, with specific how-tos for taking a history, doing the physical examination, and documenting possible injuries. In addition to chapters covering different organ systems, there is a chapter that identifies other patterns of injury not commonly addressed in other standard approaches to child abuse. A wonderful description of a childs’ development as well as child interviewing techniques are included in the psychosocial assessment chapter. The text concludes with a very useful section on legal issues and documentation. This is an excellent book for clinicians and practitioners who have the potential to see children who have been possible victims of physical abuse or neglect."

--Jean C. Smith, M.D., Associate Medical Director, Child Medical Evaluation Program, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

        Book Description

Posttraumatic stress, clinical dysfunction, behavioral and emotional disorders--these are but a few of the problems faced by children encountering violence within the home. Until recently, however, most studies on spousal abuse have focused on adults, not children. Now, in Children of Battered Women, three distinguished researchers offer a detailed examination of what is perhaps the darkest side of family violence. After presenting a brief historical perspective, the authors consider the devastating impact of family violence on children, the links between violence and spouse abuse on child development and clinical dysfunction, children's views of violence, and strategies for intervention and prevention. Several key topics are addressed including methods for assessing children and families, obstacles of identifying children, the roles of institutions and service agencies (including shelters), the courts, and the schools. The authors weave poignant cases, conceptual models of abuse and dysfunction, and empirical research to portray the scope of the problem. In addition to a review of several intervention strategies, the authors offer details on an intervention they have developed. The scholarship and sensitivity with which the topic is approached make this book an invaluable tool for researchers and practitioners working with these children. As such, psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals, lawyers, and policymakers will benefit from this impressive volume. "Children of Battered Women gives an informative look at the effects of domestic violence, intervention strategies, and preventative strategies. Educators, parents, and professional service workers would benefit from the information presented by the authors of this book." --Family Violence Bulletin The first to focus exclusively on the characteristics and the needs of the children of battered women. The authors' longstanding history of work with children who have witnessed violence, attests to the appropriateness of their position as spokespersons on this issue. . . . Children of Battered Women makes a significant contribution to theory and intervention in the field of family violence. --The Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health "It usefully organises theoretical aspects around clinical findings in children who, as part of the spectrum of victims and survivors of abuse, form a significant part of clinical practice but often an insignificant part of standard textbooks. Adult mental health workers would find it equally useful as a reminder of the importance of this problem and its relevance to psychological functioning." --British Journal of Psychiatry "A useful addition to the literature on domestic violence. . . . Recommended to all those working with families where spouse abuse is an issue." --Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry Newsletter "Children of Battered Women successfully presents the latest in theory, research, and practice on the topic. . . . It is of practical use to both academics and practitioners in the area of family violence. It is well documented, synthesizing the research of the past 15 years on family violence as it relates to child psychopathology. . . . Illustrations help the reader to understand the often unique difficulties with which children of battered women must cope. . . . [It] would be a good addition to any clinician's library. In addition it would be useful in clinical social work courses that focus on childhood psychopathology and treatment." --Affilia "A brief, straightforward book that both reviews the research to date on children who have witnessed violence between their parents and discusses intervention strategies and primary prevention ideas for working with this population. Insofar as the authors are clinicians as well as researchers, their views are strongly influenced by a clinical perspective, a major strength of this work. . . . A highly useful book that should be welcomed by researchers with a particular interest in this topic but also by anyone who works in a domestic violence shelter or who works with children in any capacity." --Journal of Interpersonal Violence "The most outstanding feature of this slim volume is its excellent review of the literature on family violence generally and child witnesses specifically. . . . One could read this volume with little prior knowledge of family violence and understand the dynamics of the violent family quite well. . . . An excellent resource for researchers, educators and clinicians who are concerned with child witnesses of spousal violence. It expands the body of knowledge concerning family violence and draws attention to a formerly overlooked victim of spousal violence: the child who directly or indirectly witnesses the violent act." --Families in Society "A welcome contribution to the growing but still meager literature on the effects on children of observing family violence. . . . An important addition. . . . Should generate a lot of research on children as additional victims of wife battering." --Gloria J. Palileo, University of South Alabama "The book offers valuable understanding of the plight and service needs of a long overlooked and underserved population--children, the hidden victimes of domestic violence." --AWP Newsletter "Highly recommended." --Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin Book Club

          4 out of 5 stars Child maltreatment.......2007-10-11

This is an excellent book, not only for mandated reporters, but also for those in the investigative, maltreatment forensics or evaluation fields. Social workers, teachers and case workers among others may find this good introduction. WARNING: At times it is somewhat graphic with photographic illustrations.
