Book Description

Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites--often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.

Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include:

-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

It's a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.

This is a great way to give your kids the vitamins and nutrients they need until they realize that fruits and vegetables actually DO taste good.

4 out of 5 stars Good for moms.......2007-10-16

This idea is very good as it gets veggies into our children's diet. Americans still eat far too little in terms of fruits and veggies than most of the world, which is why I started Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids www.hhhkids.com. We offer FREE weekly quick tips to parents dealing with finicky eaters. This book is right up our alley as it is similiar to our Cooking Incognito recipes we showcase in our tips and monthly newsletter.

5 out of 5 stars Simply terrific.......2007-10-14

This is an awesome book. My kids just love the food, and don't even know they are eating healthy.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME idea and the food actually taste good too!!.......2007-10-11

I LOVE this cookbook!! I have made many of the recipes and they have all been a huge hit with my family. The burgers are fabulous and the sloppy-joes - which I have NEVER liked before - are now one of my favorite meals. You cannot go wrong with this book!! One of my kids is a great eater while the other won't eat veggies for anything. Now, he's eating veggies with almost every meal (w/o knowing it, of course). I have baked things for friends and for my kids' classes ... and everyone loves it!! The only thing we didn't like -- the cupcakes were horrible!! I am going to try to make them again ... I must have done something wrong. There is no way we could love everything else in the book but hate the cupcakes so much. :o)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-10-10

Two out of my three kids are picky eaters and they ate all of the meals I made from this book! It feels good to know that they are getting added nutrients that they wouldn't normally be eating. It does take extra time to prepare some of these recipes but it is worth it to me if my kids are getting nutritious meals. Great book!

Pretend Soup has rapidly become the children's cookbook classic, and no home or daycare center should be without a copy. Mollie Katzen, author of the Moosewood Cookbook, and educator Ann Henderson have created a masterpiece formatted for grown-ups--with written instructions, suggestions, and caveats--and for kids--with illustrated, easy-to-follow pictures. The recipes are both tasty and healthy, and the quotes from kids are very funny (Matthew: "This is so good, I can't even say a word.") While safety is stressed and tips and warnings are included, Katzen and Henderson always stress the fun in food preparation. "Spills are what sponges are for. So keep plenty of sponges around, and a good time will be had by all!"

Book Description

A Cookbook for Preschoolers & Up

Together with her co-author, educator Ann Henderson, cookbook author Mollie Katzen believes it's never too early to introduce children to the creative world of cookery in a fun, healthful way. For small children, exploring food and cooking is not just about eating, it can be a playful activity and a way to learn new skills. As an educational experience, consider all the things a child can learn in the kitchen: counting, symbol recognition, reading readiness, self-confidence, use of tools, food literacy, and more.

Pretend Soup brings the grown-up world of real cooking to a child's level. Each vegetarian recipe is presented on double-page spreads, two per recipe. Full of Mollie's well-loved warmth and whimsical artistry, the first spread details the ingredients, safety tips, and a familiar version of the recipe for the prep cook: the adult. The second spread presents the recipe pictorally for the child and introduces a few easy-to-read words - your child moves from the usual role of helper to head cook.

5 out of 5 stars Little ones will love the pictures!!.......2007-09-12

My son, 4, loves this book! He loves that he can follow a recipe without having to read and he loves the outcome. Really helps kids get in touch with how food is put together and the joy of the process. The pictures are cute and colorful and the recipes simple and delicious. With most food coming in boxes and bags, this a great way to introduce kids to home made food.

5 out of 5 stars My son has me read it to him cover to cover!.......2007-06-06

My 3 (and a 1/2) year old son LOVES this book, LOVES IT! He really does sit me down and ask me to read it through as if it were a story book. We also cook out of it. He is always thrilled to make a new recipe. We've made 7 of them, and we've only had the book for 2 months. He can't get enough. Buy this book, really.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Mommy 'n Me Cookbook.......2007-03-07

I bought this for my daughter years ago and she still loves it! My only complaint is that she always wants to cook from it, and I'm not always up for it. I gave it to her friends, along with an apron, for Christmas and it was a big hit. Very easy for young kids to follow and be inspired!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-02-11

This is a great introduction to following directions and cooking methods. Many of these recipes are not quite for preschoolers since some stove top cooking is required, but safety tips and suggestions are included. The drawings are simple enough for my three year old to understand. We are looking forward to experiencing this book together.

4 out of 5 stars Yummy family cooking time.......2007-01-22

Mollie Katzen is well known in the food world for her involvement with the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, New York. She has been creating recipes and writing vegetarian cookbooks for adults for many years. However, until she witnessed her son's preschool class making applesauce one day, she didn't think her three-year-old would have an interest in preparing food.

When she talked to his teacher, Ann Henderson, she discovered that the class cooked weekly. Something clicked during this conversation and she remembered her "play cooking" as a child, with her mother's old bowls in the backyard.

Several years later, Mollie and Ann teamed up to write a cookbook for parents and their preschoolers to use to experience the fun of early cooking at home.

Because this unique cookbook is designed for both adults and preschoolers, it does not follow traditional cookbook layout. First, the recipe is written traditionally for the adults to go through. Next, the recipe is written in a pictorial version for the kids to use. The authors also give tips to make these more fun and safe for the children. Ideas such as colored tape on the handle of the butter (or plastic) knife to teach them which end to hold, and creating a cooking station at the kitchen table where it is safer for the kids to reach using an electric skillet. Each recipe is presented in a colorful way, with ideas on how to introduce young and picky eaters to try new foods.

Recipes such as popovers, green spaghetti, bagel faces and pretend soup are simple enough to not confuse young cooks, but complex enough to inspire their imaginations and leave them with good, healthy fun food to eat. Each of these recipes has been made and taste tested by Ann's preschoolers and the book is peppered with quotes from the kids on what they thought of the foods that they made.

I'm looking forward to spending some time with the preschoolers in my life and trying out some of the fun food recipes found inside this fun little cookbook.

My son is getting interested in cooking and I wanted a simple cookbook for him. This one is filled with how to be fit articles and some recipes. I wish there were more of just the recipes and without wheat germ type substance in them.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book!!!.......2005-09-13

this book is wonderful!!! i have a five year-old who loves helping in the kitchen and a two year-old (and a husband) who are both realatively picky eaters and this book pleases all. the recipes are completely healthy, which i love...and delicious to boot!! each is rated east, medium, or difficult (kid-wise), which is very helpful. the chapters are divided by the part or the body/body function that is most applicable. each chapter includes simple science experiments to bring another angle to this books education value. i have more than a dozen cook books, and this is the one i keep coming back too. i love it so much i am getting copies for my nieces and nephews for christmas!!

This book contains great ideas that are also tasty. My picky eaters enjoyed the Breakfast No-Bake granola bars, the Awesome Banana Berry Pancakes and the Creamy, Dreamy Yogurt Orange-Banana Frozen pops. We are excited to try many of the other great recipe ideas. The recipes in here are easy to follow, and taste great!

Book Description

Childhood is a pivotal time for good nutrition. Organs and blood streams nurtured with junk food cannot build a foundation for good health and longevity as an adult. Drs. Joseph Mercola and Ben Lerner believe profound inactivity, addiction to electronic media, and diets of super-sized fast food and sugar-laden beverages have created a national emergency. Generation XL is a clarion call and a detailed guide to giving your child a vibrant, successful future and a healthy, wholesome, invigorating youth.

As children riddled with pain, illness, learning disorders, and even depression begin to show up everywhere, rather than looking at brain development, nutrition, and lack of movement as the culprits, concerned parents are turning to more and more medications. Think about that. Is that how we were designed? To make medication a way of life and to be drugged early on a consistent basis?

What does the future hold for us when kids are overweight, out of shape, and taking medications for the effects? What kind of children are we creating?

This is not a diet book-far, far from it. Dropping another diet book into the same culture will do nothing but take up more room on your shelf. Generation XL shows you how kids were created to eat, breathe, sleep, run, and live. At the same time, Drs. Mercola and Lerner help you change your family culture and recognize where the culture around you isn't working so you can avoid it or help to change it.

Since prevention is always easier (and wiser) than cure, incorporating the lifestyle changes suggested in Generation XL gives your child a realistic way to reach and maintain a healthy weight; dramatically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other health risks; and build a strong body and positive mental attitude, maximizing his or her IQ and giving the best chance for success.

2 out of 5 stars Yumm... trans-fats!!.......2007-06-26

Wonder when trans-fats became healthy - there's so much margerine called for in this book you'd have to buy half a case! Sure, you can substitute butter, but fat is fat is fat. On a possitive note, the recipes come out well using reduced fat peanut butter - also used butter in half the amount with some success. Not thrilled with this book.

1 out of 5 stars Healthy?????.......2007-02-09

When was margarin healthy??? I just looked inside here at Amazon and all the recipes started with MARGARINE!!! Margarine = Trans Fats!

5 out of 5 stars Picky Eaters Beware!!!.......2005-07-17

I am the Mom of a very picky eater & I am purchasing this book from Amazon after trying it out from the library.
I think it has a lot of great ideas & also catchy names for the foods, which really baits the kids into trying something new!
I'm just taking a batch of the "Bunny Hopper" cookies out of the oven right now...

2 out of 5 stars Too much fat!.......2003-09-18

This book contains way too many recipes with high fat items. It also doesn't contain the nutritional info for the finished items, which makes it useless to me. If you're thinking "healthy" means moderate to low fat/calorie, then this isn't the book for you!

2 out of 5 stars Should be called peanut butter snack book!.......2002-01-10

I was hoping to find some help in the snack dept, as I have a limited variety of ideas for my partially food-allergic kid. He is allergic to a few items -- one happens to be peanuts, the other egg whites, but that's it. And unfortunately, 80% of the recipes in this book include peanut butter, nuts, or eggs! Nothing more original. I expected some of this knowing kids love PB, but most of the recipes are inclusive of one of the 2 allergens my son has, so this book was a huge disappointment.

If you're child is allergy-free, this book is for you. Nevertheless, it's still peanut-butter heavy. Given the incidence of kids with allergies in today's world, it would be great if more cookbook authors gave a section/chapter of their work to allergy-free recipes for kids.

I was very disappointed in the recipes in this book - I would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, practical corkbook that's well within reach.......2006-03-06

I love this cookbook & use it all the time! My daughter has many allergies (tree nuts included) so we haven't been able to use all the recipes, but those that we have are wonderful! I keep checking back, hoping to see another book by this author, but haven't found any so far. As for the "rantings" spoken about in another review....I read the book cover to cover and didn't find anything that fits that description. I enjoyed Ms. Meyer's stories of her children and her 'journey' and appreciate her having shared it. Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars This book did not meet my expectations. .......2005-07-13

I wanted to like this book, but just can't. The author is condescending at best and downright insulting at worst. I think it's safe to assume that anyone buying a cookbook can um - cook! She also uses butter in every other recipe, but according to the book her kids are allergic to dairy. I don't get it. She's also a little off the deep end, she basically goes off on the entire food industry as if they are trying to kill her little darlings on purpose. Then there is a section where she goes off on a tangent about the dangers of using a grill - then she actually has the audacity to provide a recipe for grilling hotdogs and hamburgers! As if I need a cookbook for that. The other problem that I have with the book is that nearly every recipe centers around a sauce made with dijon mustard, olive oil and copious amounts of lemon juice. I'm very allergic to lemon juice, so in all honesty my ability to use this cookbook is almost non-existant.

5 out of 5 stars Good recipes even in non-allergic kitchen.......2004-10-16

This cookbook is simple, easy to follow and encourages you to cook from scratch without giving you a guilt-complex. The stuffed-cabbage recipe alone is worth the cost. I'd never done it before, got a wild hair- tried it and we loved it. My kids like making their own cokes, too. Basically, they like to make just about anything and this was the cookbook that convinced me to bring them into the kitchen. I originally bought this to cook for my grandma (celiac) but it is a staple in my kitchen even though nobody's allergic. Not every recipe works for us, but most do. I think it's a great "family" type cookbook. We are by no means health-food nuts either- if anything more junk-food nuts. FYI- I have a (picky) teen, (super picky) toddler and a (eat anything but peaches) baby. I encourage you to try this cookbook, especially if your kids are allergic. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite resources for my severely allergic child.......2003-05-18

When my child was first diagnosed I ordered twenty different recipe/cookbooks for special diets/allergies. This is one of 2 that I actually use frequently. The recipes are simple and my child likes them. The information on substituting ingredients and creating safe versions of forbidden items is excellent. Most of all I found the author's attitude and sense of humor very liberating and empowering. Reading this book always makes me feel that I can do this. It's an excellent starter book to help a parent or the newly diagnosed person with food allergies to get control of their diet and attitude. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

In 1996, shortly after best-selling author Judy Mazel released the sequel to her original book The New Beverly Hills Diet, Dr. John Monaco, a pediatric critical care specialist and former "fat kid," turned to Mazel's program to combat his own critical weight problem and improve his health. After achieving great success himself, he decided that where adults succeeded on the program, kids could, too - perhaps even more so. Most important, Dr. Monaco realized that obesity among children was the main factor precipitating life-threatening diseases among them - such as asthma, diabetes and clinical depression - as well as other serious, though not potentially fatal, problems like excessive strain on bones, joints and muscles.

Mazel and Monaco have teamed up to offer parents Slim and Fit Kids, a one-of-a-kind approach to raising healthy, well-adjusted children. Combining Mazel's successful twenty-plus years of experience with food combining with Monaco's pediatric expertise, this book will teach parents everything they need to know about nutrition, digestion and nutrient absorption. This compelling book provides easy-to-understand information on the science of pediatric nutrition, as well as down-to-earth reminders on children's natural eating habits, making it easy and fun for parents to teach healthy nutritional habits that will last a lifetime.

Divided into parts, the first focuses on children's obesity. Chapters in this part include an overview of the problem of obesity in children and the diseases and disorders it engenders; Dr. Monaco's discovery of the Beverly Hills Diet and his idea to adapt it to children's nutrition; an overview of the digestive process; a summary of developmental nutrition, explaining the nutritional needs and issues of each age group; and personal accounts of the childhood obesity problem. The second part shows parents the practical steps to incorporating the nutritional principles they have learned into a daily program for their kids.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At last, a fun and healthy approach to weight loss!.......1999-10-23

I read this book in a night and at 5am excitedly began trying some of the exercise examples. My son, who was "camping" in the living room for the week-end, opened one eye warily and asked me if I'd lost it? Before I knew it however, he began showing me the movements. At last, a practical book that details an approach to weight loss that eliminates hunger, promotes self-determination without the negatives and creates a fun and healthy new lifestyle for the whole family! Judy Mazel's approach to weight loss in "The New Beverly Hills Diet" had helped me lose 17 lbs. almost overnight, but the simple modifications to the plan in "Slim and Fit Kids" creates just enough flexibility to make it easier and all inclusive. More importantly, Dr. John Monaco's medical expertise clearly supports July Mazel's approach to weight loss and answers many of the leading questions about obesity, lifestyle and 'food stuffs' that currently plagues American society today. In addition, the exercises, recipes and the positive psychological support presents an unbeatable package. I highly recommend "Slim and Fit Kids", not just for families with overweight kids, but for everyone who is concerned about their health.

Feeding your family a healthy diet (in the real world with real kids and real food) can be a challenge! Parents are trying to follow current nutrition guidelines, teach their kids healthy eating habits--and avoid too much junk food.
