Book Description

The story of a remarkable woman's rise out of the foster-care system to attain the American dream—and of the unlikely series of women who lifted her up in marvelous and distinctive ways

Born as a ward of the state of Maine—the child of an unmarried Yankee blueblood mother and an unknown black father—Victoria Rowell beat the odds. Unlike so many other children who fall through the cracks of our overburdened foster-care system, her experience was nothing short of miraculous, thanks to several extraordinary women who stepped forward to love, nurture, guide, teach, and challenge her to become the accomplished actress, philanthropist, and mother that she is today.

Rowell spent her first weeks of life as a boarder infant before being placed with a Caucasian foster family. Although her stay lasted for only two years, at this critical stage Rowell was given a foundation of love by the first of what would be an amazing array of women, each of whom presented herself for different purposes at every dramatic turn of Rowell's life.

In this deeply touching memoir, Rowell pays tribute to her personal champions: the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, teachers, and sisters who each have fascinating stories to tell. Among them are Agatha Armstead, Rowell's longest-term foster mother, a black Bostonian on whose rural Maine farm Rowell's fire to reach for greatness was lit; Esther Brooks, a Paris-trained prima ballerina, Rowell's first mentor at the Cambridge School of Ballet; Rosa Turner, a Boston inner-city fosterer who taught Rowell lessons of independence; Sylvia Silverman, a mother and teacher whose home in a well-kept middle-class suburban neighborhood prepared Rowell for her transition out of foster care and into New York City's wild worlds of ballet and acting and adulthood.

In spite of support from individuals and agencies, Rowell nonetheless carried the burden of loneliness and anxiety, common to most foster children, particularly those "orphans of the living" who are never adopted. Heroically overcoming those obstacles, Rowell also reaches a moment when she can embrace her biological mother, Dorothy, and, most important, accept herself.

Ultimately, The Women Who Raised Me is a story that belongs to each of us as it shines a glowing light on the transformational power of mentoring, love, art, and womanhood.

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-09-07

This was a well written book. The author gives a heartfelt account of her life in foster care. She begins her story as a small child in rural Maine and concludes as an adult actress in Hollywood. This is a great book that deals with foster care, mental illness, achievements, and adversity in a young woman's life.

2 out of 5 stars Wanted more of an autobiography.......2007-08-16

I know the title says the women who raised me, but I really wanted to read more about how she got into acting, what it was like to be on the young and the restless and work with dick van dyke. She spends many chapters about her ballet years, but doesnt mention what it was like to get into tv acting, which is really her career, not ballet. She is known for being a TV star. She did a great deal of research into her families/friends - I think too much. I had to skip many many pages because it got boring. She mentions her marriage, but never talks about getting divorced. I never knew if she married Wynton or not, had to look it up on the net. She doesn't get into her relationships with men much or her children. I got the impression Wynton was raising her son? but who knows. She seems very multi talented though and it was great that she put so much time into writing a book in addition to her other charities/career.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing,surprising insights about foucs & tenacity.......2007-08-10

This is an exceptionally touching journey through the life of a foster child that was exposed to a number of phenomenal women.

All their lives were woven together beautifully by the author [Rowell]and revealed that despite backgrounds that were so different, these women all exhibited determined, giving spirits through their own talents.

A must read!!

5 out of 5 stars The Women Who Raised Me.......2007-07-28

A very touching story , well written and informative. So sad at times. I loved that there were pictures of these incredible women to put faces on the heroes! Inspiring too, that with love and guidance, our children can thrive in difficult life situations.
As a grandmother to a mixed race child, very distubing also, that we still have so far to go in the US.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2007-07-01

I could not put down Ms. Rowell's life journey. I knew very little about her, only that she was an actress in a soap opera. She is an incredibly strong woman. I have great admiration for her. She could so easily have turned her back on her painful past and distanced herself from orphans; but she chose not to. She embraces her birth mother and all who assisted her.

3 out of 5 stars Good for familes but not babies.......2007-01-12

This is a good book if you are looking for recipes for a family, however, I thought that it was lacking in recipes and information as first solids for babies (which is what I expected). I think it's it great for families with children 2 years and older. The recipes are focused on adults first, then younger children, then babies. So, if you are looking for recipes exclusively or primarily for babies-- this is not the right book.

2 out of 5 stars not for me.......2006-09-23

I was hoping for something with easy recipes that the whole family could enjoy together, but this is not it. A lot of the recipes are really unsuited for babies, and they instead give "baby" versions at the end that consist of reserving one of the ingredients (e.g., brown rice) and pureeing it plain--not exactly nutritious. (These are often followed by "children's" versions that necessitate picking out selected ingredients that may--or may not--appeal to kids.) There are too many grain-based recipes for my taste (deep-fried millet croquettes...red bean quinoa chili) and a lot of nuts (bad for babies), sea vegetables and permutations of soy (tofu, tempeh, tamari) which I personally am not interested in serving due to all the recent scrutiny of soy products as hormone disruptors (also a possible allergen for babies). It is really sort of an Asian-inspired/macrobiotic vegetarian cookbook (Tempeh Bacon is one of the recipes). "Whole Foods," in my mind, should feature fresh, minimally processed, natural, localized ingredients, but this seems to require endless trips to the health food store to purchase products such as seitan and kudzu. There is a lot of great nutritional information at the beginning of the book discussing babies and breastfeeding mothers, and some seemingly good sugar-free desserts, but I am sort of disappointed that the majority of the recipes are not palatable for the whole family (or easily modifed so that older babies can enjoy what everyone else gets).

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.......2006-08-11

"Feeding the Whole Family" by Cynthia Lair really is for the WHOLE family - and that includes infants and young children. Lair, a certified Health and Nutrition Counselor, devotes a whole chapter on starting your baby on solid foods. From there, she gives practical tips and advice on how to attract your children to healthy food. Lair also discusses the importance of whole, organic foods and well-balanced meals.

And then it's on to the recipes. A cool feature is that almost all of the recipes give suggestions for how it can be prepared for a baby. Many also include variations to make the dish more appealing to children. The cookbook includes the following sections:

Basic Grain and Bean Cookery: A good reference for basic cooking of whole grains, pastas, and beans.

Bustling Breakfasts: Recipes include Whole Grain Baby Cereal, 5-Grain Morning Cereal, Nut and Seed Granola, Buttermilk Banana Pancakes, Tofu Vegetable Breakfast Burrito, and Tempeh Bacon - no eggs here!

Lively Lunchboxes: This section has great ideas for kids lunches. We loved the Sesame Noodles and I am looking foward to trying the Tempeh Avocado Sushi Rolls, Mad Dog Rice Salad, Quick Lemon and Garlic Quinoa Salad, and Apple Miso Almond Butter Sandwich.

Soothing Soups: We loved the Red Lentil Soup with East Indian Spices, Split Pea Soup with Fresh Peas and Potatoes, Creamy Broccoli Soup. I still want to try the Thick Potato Cauliflower and Dulse Soup.

Substantial Suppers: The Pan-Fried Tofu and Greesn with Almond Ginger Drizzle was a huge hit with my family. Still on my list to try is Polenta Pizza, Black Bean Tostados, Nut Burgers, Seitan and Shiitake Mushrooms in Cashew Mirin Sauce. This section does contain some non-vegetarian recipes for salmon, shrimp, rainbow trout, and chicken.

Vital Vegetables: There are lots of recipes for greens as well as many salads. Our favorite so far is Susan's Succulent Supper Salad. The dressing is so good - actually it has become my staple dressing.

Fresh Breads and Muffins: I just made the Homemade Whole Grain Bread yesterday and that's when I knew I had to get this review written. It was probably the best bread I have ever made - soft, light but still hearty. It rose perfectly and tasted great. There are also some recipes for muffins and pizza dough.

Sauces and Stuff: Recipes for sauces, gravy, dressing, marinade, ghee and curry paste.

Wholesome Desserts: Lair gives an explanation of alternative sweeteners, plus tips for replace eggs and white flour in baked goods. The Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies were great - crispy and delicious. I'm dying to try the Blueberry-Strawberry Tart but the kids keep eating the berries before I get around to making this. There are lots of cookie and cake recipes. The frostings are kind of unusual - I haven't tried any yet.

Natural Drinks and Brews: Teas, nut milks, cold and hot drinks.

As you can see, this a very comprehensive cookbook- full of helpful information and delicious recipes. Though it is mostly vegetarian, there are a few meat recipes - so this cookbook is great for anyone wanting to eat a whole foods diet.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy for Your Lactobacilli.......2006-07-25

In the foreword by Annemarie Colbin, CHES, of The Natural Gourmet Cookery School in NYC, there is the suggestion that shifts in customs around eating have contributed to the breakdown of our society, "could it be that by our dietary customs- consumption of unnatural foods and large amounts of meat and milk from animals raised on antibiotics and hormones- we are building a new kind of human being, one that has little connection with the healthier ways of the past?" I'd have to say... No. I don't see that as being a simple cause and effect, but I'm with her in spirit. I'd see both our diets and our lifestyles as being downstream effects of animals living in a very different kind of environment than the one we spent the overwhelming majority of our species-span evolving in. It doesn't matter whether she overstates the case or not, the bottom-line is still correct, we are Paleolithic hominids with Paleolithic-tuned bodies stranded without our tribes, alone in our urban institutions. By finding ways to recreate customs that resonate with a deeper part of our evolutionary past, we stand to not only enrich our lives but also improve our physical and mental health.

What do you know, it does take a village. But the villages are gone (and the old ones had their down sides, they weren't as kind to ostracized outliers as the anonymous urban mesh). Still, we can recreate the best of The Village without holding on clumsily to the parts that don't fit just out of fretful superstition. So, live in co-ops, teach your children and your neighbor's children in co-ops schools, plant a garden with friends (oops, I've gone outside the scope of a review again, thanks for all your lovely email reminders. Don't worry, I'll get us back on track, watch.) And lovingly prepare homemade meals from whole foods for your whole family. (ah, nicely done)

That's where Cynthia Lair's wonderful recipes come in. While this book does do some educating on whole foods and some philosophizing on the importance of healthy eating, the strength of this book are great and simple recipes, conveyed with love and enthusiasm.

If I had to say how this book has changed my life in two words, I'd have to say "Quinoa" and "safflower oil." Oops, does that count as three words? I'm cooking with new ingredients, eating lower on the gylcemic index, and I've given up bacon. Okay, that last one is a lie. I can't seem to give up bacon. Our little secret. Don't tell my vegan friends and don't tell my rabbi. But I feel bad when I eat it, and that's a start.

Cynthia Lair includes a nice little chapter on reducing flatulence. Beans are high in Oligosaccharides that pass all the way to the colon undigested. They sit in your colon with your colonic flora and ferment, produce that famous vegetarian flatulence. Personally, I'm not sure why you would want to reduce that, that seems to me to be at least half the fun of being a vegetarian. My buddy, Greg, in college could release a deluge of potent raffinose and stachyose byproducts in such a forecful way that the couch would shake. And not just the couch he was sitting on, but our other couch, which had to be at least a yard away. He had another trick, too distasteful for this format but remind me to tell you later.

I do have a personal connection, I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Ms. Lair when I rotated through Bastyr University. She was great, taught me the proper way to chop cilantro. She coaches with all positive reinforcement, and has an infectious smile. You can see it on display in photos on the back cover. Bright countenance. Mild exopthalmous, but captivating. And the recipes are really inventive and very tasty. Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2006-03-24

I met Cynthia Lair while I was a student at Bastyr University. I was fortunate enough to take her semester long, whole foods cooking class. Boy was she difficult! She took her whole foods cooking VERY seriously. I'm grateful now for the experience as it started me on a wonderful journey of whole foods preparation. I loved the book then and I love it even more now because it's given me lots of ideas to feed my little one wholesome foods. I've tried about 90% of the recipes through the years and can honestly say I've never made one I did not like! Thanks Cynthia for all you've taught me!

Although Amazon.com lists this 58 page book as for young adults, young children have appreciated having this book read to them. The title is a good example of the style used by this a child psychologist as he speaks to children and teens. With children and teens or young adults, I suggest reading and discussing it together. There are some pointers for older adults as well.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff is Hot Stuff.......2005-11-23

What a wonderful book. I read the reviews here before purchasing and my only reservation was with the "sarcastic" humor in the book. Actually, it is the humor that makes this book work. It was the bait that got my son hooked on the book.

I bought this for my 8 year-old son. He started to read it immediately. The book is a book and a workbook where you do some introspection. When he saw there were places to write down his responses, he ran and got a pencil. The first day he (we) spent nearly an hour reading and answering questions before we told him he needed to put it down and go to bed.

The book does a good job of validating the feelings that a child (actually all of us) has and gives great ways to deal with those responses. If you have ever encouraged your child to say "gooz fah bah" (from Anger Management the movie), then this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars I Wanted To Like This More, But...........2004-09-01

This book was difficult to use with elementary age children, especially those who are K-4th grade. Some of the sarchastic humor and tongue-in-cheek humor was very tough for younger children and/or kids with lower intellectual functioning. When I tried to use this several times with kids; the concepts did not engage them and seemed to go above their heads. I would also like this book more if it was sectioned off in short activities and lessons.
Although I do not have any teenage clients at this time; I imagine that this book would work very well with adolescents. I will continue to try and use this book, however. It may just be my current caseload that is not responding....

3 out of 5 stars Needs some modifications!.......2004-07-13

I bought this book for two preteen boys I provide skill/therapy sessions with. It was hard for them to understand some of the sarcastic humor in the book - however if this had been left out it would have been a great book for them. Ideal for a parent, or professional to spark conversation with children.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Girls!.......2006-11-10

This book is a must for all young girls. This book is "real" and is a great foundation for developing character for young girls who must deal with the rough tough meaness of the female world. It validates the sad reality and garbage stuff that's really going on among young girls.

4 out of 5 stars Author RETURNABLE GIRL.......2006-11-01

As a therapist who works primarily with teen girls, I applaud any author who writes on this topic, to give insight and help to many girls who are struggling with these issues. It's the reason I wrote my young adult novel, RETURNABLE GIRL, about a teen in foster care and her journey to adoption, amidst the bullying of middle school. [...]

1 out of 5 stars A load of crock........2005-03-16

This book takes heartfelt letters written by girls trusting their most private experiences to a complete stranger (the author) -- and dissects them like a dead frog, telling the girls what they did "wrong" and how they "should" be acting, feeling, behaving if they want to a get a good grade, because this book GRADES every girl in their "First Person" segments.

The book's so-called solutions to complex friendship problems are condescending, written in wittle gurl speak, as if all of the challenges that a teenager faces can be cured by reading one saccharine-sweet paragraph.

This is a great book to give a teenager if you want her to come out acting like a little eye-batting robot who likes to give her friends lectures or follow lemmings over a cliff. Otherwise, I'd recommend books that don't gloss over problems or treat teen's issues like a pre-packaged slab of meat. I just read "Odd Girl Speaks Out" which quotes girls' full experiences without giving too much of a dumbed down response.

It too, however, may not have the answers to life's toughest questions -- but few (if any) books do. For the hardest or most dangerous issues, the best thing you can do is turn to a live person -- and keep turning until you find someone who actually listens to you.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK!.......2005-03-11

well, i bought this book cos i needed to know a little bit more about teenage behaviors and alittle of their psychology and stuff.

well this is a book well written for girls between 12 and 15 it lets u know why girls behave one way and some others differently, it also says some good ways to deal with them or avoid them etc.

it talks about, the bully, the drama queen etc etc. so its a nice book, i rate it with 4 because is not like a book to read is more like a manual.

4 out of 5 stars One caution!.......2007-04-02

My Wife and I ordered this book for our teenage daughter. I have only scanned through it but my Wife has read it from cover to cover. Our only real concern is that on page 99 the author emplies that there is only a 1 in 600 million chance of being born since only 1 of the 600 million sperm is used to fertilize the ovum. The authors discussion makes it seem that it is hard to get pregnant. ITs not that hard to get pregnant! That does not mean more did not reach the ovum, but only one is used.

Also the 600 million number does not match what I find as a "normal sperm count" , which I find to be 40 and 100 million (20 million per milliliter of semen with 2 to 5 ml as a normal volume) Search the web on the quoted text above.

That is just not a reasonable statistical analysis. And in the easy reading format of the book I believe that a teenager could be mislead into believing it is hard to get pregnent.

If half stars were available I would have given it a 4 1/2 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced, Realistic, Comprehensive.......2006-11-06

I've reviewed about a dozen teen sexuality education books for my practice and while there are a few good ones, this one by far leads the pack. - Pertinent topics of interest to teens and parents; easy-to-read format; an abundance of good illustrations; accurate information combined with realistic advice - just a great resource for teens, parents and practitioners like myself.

1 out of 5 stars There is nothing underground about this book at all........2006-07-31

Basso's book is intended for younger teenagers, but it promotes abstinence, and is not reality based at all. As a high school teacher, he has to be conservative in this society, but today's teenagers will not accept his message, nor should they. The book is really sex-negative, and as such, it is not very relevant to today's teenagers, especially those 15-19.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-03-18

Michael Basso does a masterful job of taking a sensitive topic and breaking it down into laymans terms for broad understanding. He uses science, reality, ethical values, and an obvious profound knowledge of what teens are looking for, what they need, and how best to communicate these messages and lessons.

This is an excellent resource for low-level readers, parents, educators, physicians, and most importantly, teens. I enjoyed reading this and now use it within my medical practice with young people. I am also purchasing the Spanish version.

A useful guide about contraceptives, barrier methods, waiting/abstinence, and general questions surrounding sexuality. This book presents itself from a teenage perspective and can be useful to reacing out to this demographic, especially when it comes to explaining things that parents find it difficult to talk about.

Building on the success of his guide to raising healthy young boys (The Wonder of Boys, Michael Gurian has written the next chapter--a book focusing on the much-maligned adolescent male. Gurian asserts, "We do not understand adolescent-male development, and therefore are unable to give our adolescent males the kind of love they need to become fully responsible, loving, and wise men." Adolescent boys may appear to be self-sufficient, but Gurian asserts that they actually need their parents and elders desperately. The author carefully illustrates what we--as parents, mentors, and educators--need to know about male adolescents, and what we can do to aid them on their journey to adulthood.

In the face of many sociologists and scholars who strongly declare the contrary, Gurian claims a biological basis for many male behavioral traits. In A Fine Young Man, he employs convincing data from scientific studies on neurological development to assert that female and male brains have significant differences, and that testosterone plays an important role in male development and behavior.

But A Fine Young Man offers far more than theory. Gurian's arguments are firmly rooted in reality, and he offers specific suggestions for typical family dilemmas. He breaks down the stages of development into preadolescence, early, middle, and late adolescence; discusses education and the role of the media; and suggests ways to keep aggression (caused in part by the testosterone flooding the adolescent male brain) from becoming violence. In a social sense, Gurian says, adolescent boys are our most undernourished population, and A Fine Young Man encapsulates his hope that our neglected young men receive the nurturing they need. --Ericka Lutz

Book Description

The author explores the unseen problems and marvels of maile adolescents, showing parents, teachers, and mentors how to shepherd boys through the challenging ages of ten to twenty.

4 out of 5 stars A tool that parents, teachers, and community members can utalize.......2006-12-12

This book was written not only for youth but as a tool that parents, teachers, and community members can use to engage in the difficult task of guiding youth, especially young men. The author states that "Adolescent boys may appear to be self-sufficient, but they actually need their parents and elders desperately." This profound statement by the author summarizes the book in the fact that without mentor's youth can not survive. Besides providing information for family and community members the book also addresses many male behavior traits by describing biological reasons behind them. Scientific studies conducted on neurological development have asserted that female and make brains have significant differences. Within males testosterone plays a much more profound role in male development and behavior which sheds some light into the aggressive actions of male youth. However, the author doesn't simply focus on neurological development as a means to scapegoat the fact that males tend to be more aggressive then females thus their behavior should be excused, but rather suggest that this theory might explain in more depth the reasoning behind typical family dilemmas.

The book outlines ways that parents, mentors, and community members can keep aggression from becoming violence, such as focusing on education and how the media effects aggression in young men through development from preadolescence to late adolescence. The author states that adolescent boys are society's most undernourished population in regards to mentoring and that focusing a little bit of time and effort is going to pay of immensely for these young men and how they ultimately affect society.

This book was clearly written for individuals who want to broaden their knowledge surrounding at risk male youth. It has clear goals which are outlined throughout the book and it provided a solid basis for understanding what needs to be done in ones home, community, and elsewhere to aid in the development of at risk youth.

Even though at times I did not agree with the physiological causes for assertive male behavior I was able to understand that extensive research within this area has been completed and this book is based on that research. Although the neurological development of males is drastically different then females, I believe that it does not excuse aggressive behavior. Overall I thought this book was well written and had some excellent alternative view points. I would definitely recommend it to another mentor.

1 out of 5 stars Makes Boys Sound Like Wreckless Hormone Driven Monsters,.......2005-01-17

Basically to make a long story short he gives boys
*bunk" all the traits of monstes which have to be controlled by
channeling boys even further into this behavior by saying it's
"normal".In REAL life there are plenty of quiet, well mannered
boys and sex crazed rocus girls. This book has nothing to do with
reality, and is based on Gurian's subjective beliefs about
boys or as he puts it "male brains".Brains are brains and they
vary from person to person, once more he doesn't seem to understand their is more to a ^BEING^ than mere biology.
People can teach their children, both boys and girls that they
have self controll and will to succeed. Both girls as well as
boys need information which will lead them toward success in
life, not just boys.Much weight to succeed is put on boys in
his realm. This ideal of 'masculine' *gag* perfection is not good for boys, because it's a ONE SIZE FITS ALL type of
mentality.
What he's doing to kids and also adults is criminal.

5 out of 5 stars A Clinical Psychologist's View.......2002-04-06

I find Gurian's cross-cultural perspective fascinating, and he does a better job in this book than in "The Wonder of Boys" of suggesting actions that can be taken and changes that can be made to help our young men. As a mentor and a clinical psychologist who works with children and their families, I see far too many boys trying to figure out how to become men with little or no input from men. Growing up just happens as boys grow older, but maturing is another matter; maturing or developing into adulthood requires guidance and/or examples to follow. Mothers do all they can, but boys need men they respect who will teach them how to become men, or at least lead by example. This is highly recommended for mentors, educators, and parents.

4 out of 5 stars Good but left me longing for more.......2001-07-21

I have 2 boys 12 and 14. I hunger for books on this subject. I liked this book better than others. I chaff at the sterotypes necessary in this sort of book although Gurian handled this issue gracefully. The book is dense on theory and philosophy and more articulate and complete and thought provoking than most. I liked his list of characteristics and attributes of the fine young man. The sections on practical hints, while much more complete than most other books on the subject could certainly bear some fleshing out especially for parents who not are well connected with adequate male models. It made me grateful I have a great husband and a circle of good friends.

5 out of 5 stars A practical book substantiated through scientific research.......2000-08-17

One of the best features of this book is the fact that Michael Gurian. having lived in other cultures, researches his material through the scientific process aas well as by investigating other cultures in how they relate to boys. In so doing Gurian discovers some common elements and some differences. Some of these differences are surprising and offer our own culture something to thnink about. It is hard to focus on what is good about this book because one would have to summarize all its chapters. Perhaps a strong element of "A Fine Young Man" is the structure of those chapters. Guriam presents the thesis of the chapter. He presents cross-cultural references, scientific reseach and personal histories. He then offers some practical "how-to's". For those of us who work with boys, especially adolescents, this practical aspect is quite important. While Gurian's style makes this "easy" reading, one finds oneself pausing numerous times and talking to oneself about what one has just read. Gurian inspires the reader to bring "his" own life to the process. I thought this book would be a releif from the spiritual and theological reading I have been doing. Yet I found myself reflecting frequently on Gurian's insights, the implications of the research he discovered and the stories he presents. I found myself journaling about these times.

This book has solid practical value, but it also has a deep spiritual challenge to those of us to want to help our young men grow into healthy and faithful adults.

5 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!.......2007-01-15

I ordered this book at the recommendation of the psychologist who tested our daughter for ADD. It is written for older children and teenagers who have ADD or ADHD. My daughter, age 17, found it interesting. It helped her know that she was not the only one with this condition and gave her many tips for coping with life. Although I found much of it redundant, the book helped me see ADD from the perspective of a teenager.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for parents and educators.......2006-08-06

This book is a must for parents of ADHD children as well as educators. As both a parent of an ADHD child and a teacher, I found this book enlightening as well as practical. It is a very easy read, in fact, I read it in two days. It is easy to understand and is written in layman terms not scientific/medical jargon. It explains so many aspects ADHD is language that parents can understand and offers some sensible solutions to everyday problems. This book has become by ADHD bible.

I bought this book on the advice of my son's psychologist and it was worth every penny. I am also a special ed teacher and will recommend it to every teacher I know.

this book is the best insight for a parent dealing with the frustrations of a bright teen struggling with ADD issues. The opportunity to read the words of teens who have dealt with the struggle give moral support to parents that there is hope. This is a must buy!

Book Description

No Parent or Educator Can Afford to Ignore This Groundbreaking Work!
Bestselling authors H. Stephen Glenn and Jane Nelsen have helped hundreds of thousands of parents raise capable, independent children with Raising Self-Reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent World. On its tenth anniversary, this parenting classic returns with fresh, up-to-date information to offer you inspiring and workable ideas for developing a trusting relationship with children, as well as the skills to implement the necessary discipline to help your child become a responsible adult.
Those who think in terms of leniency versus strictness will be surprised. This book goes beyond these issues to teach children to be responsible and self-reliant—not through outer-directed concerns, such as fear and intimidation, but through inner-directed behavior, such as feeling accountable for one's commitments. Inside, you'll discover how to instill character-building values and traits in your child that last a lifetime.
"During these turbulent days when families are in disarray and children are getting the short end of the stick, this book can be very helpful to parents who are struggling to bring up self-reliant children. Even after raising five of my own and becoming a grandfather for the seventh time, I got some new ideas out of it!"— Art Linkletter
"An inspiring, workable formula for developing closeness, trust, dignity, and respect . . . a real gem."— Becky Ridgeway, School Social Worker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my kids are the best because of it.......2007-04-26

I was given this book by my mother when my daughter was 2 and my son was 10. We were beginning to have problems with my son and my daughter was just a challenge, period. I fell in love with the book from the first page. They said they would solve my problems, and they did.

As the authors say, its more work the older your kids are, and its true. My son dragged his feet but eventually became the model child. My daughter became the angel I always knew she was. I kept a cheat sheet with me at all times with the questions to ask and the steps to take for the first few months. It was difficult to remember all the key words and phrases off the top of your head. After that it was a natural thing to do.

My kids are now, 22 and 15. My son is a wonderful, mature, loving, well rounded man. Your basic, responsible adult who thinks before he acts and behaves more "grown up" than many grown ups I know. My daughter is more mature than me! She is growing up in a tough world, as are all our kids, and she is handling it with grace and poise. I had some friends ask me recently what I use for discipline with her as they were looking for knew ideas. I thought for a moment and realized that I dont have to discipline her at all! She is the model teenager. She communicates with us, does her homework without complaint, cleans her room when asked, does chores and is willing to discuss anything with us. I told the other moms that it was due to Self Reliance. I believe that with all my heart.

I think my kids started out as good kids, as most do, I had good clay to mold. But, I knew nothing of raising kids, not good parenting role models to fall back on. I had used P.E.T. prior to this and found it to be effective. However, Self Reliance became the backbone of my parenting and we raised some fine people that will make a difference in the world.

I have also used these techniques with the adults in my life. I used it in my marriage (he caught on after a while), I use it in my business and personal life with great results. They translate to all things and have had them used on me also to good affect too. You know you are being "Relianced", but, it helps you come around to what you need to see to.

5 out of 5 stars Veeteetoo is Beyond the Left Field..........2006-05-04

I have had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Glenn at a number of seminars and look forward to taking the Developing Capable People workshop so that I may lead parenting classes for our school district (check the research on test score improvement in school districts providing families with these skills). My only "complaint" is that I did not have access to this material while raising my own children. I DO raise 32 a year and have used the seven steps for developing capable people as the basis of my philosophy for teaching. Over the last 19 years there have been but a handful who did not respond to methods suggested in this book - two were diagnosed as having severe psychological disorders. It is NOT a cookie cutter solution to raising children, nor is there any inference that parents don't DO for their children. It is about HOW we do for them - it is a guide to help you hear yourself and THINK about how and what you communicate to your children. I don't subscribe to any philosophy that is extreme in either direction, and I never felt that message related in this book. What is HAS done is remind me that my job is to help a child see himself/herself as capable - to develop intrinsic motivation. It is a HUGE job today when so many young people see themselves as lacking in academic skills. While their parents undoubtedly love them, they are often ill equipped to effect change. This book provides such a well written, easily understood narrative that one cannot help but come away with a better sense of "how to" and a set of skills that will be useful, even if only a few steps are implemented. It is a book I give to every new parent as a gift, one that I will continue to purchase with my own money for ANY parent who struggles and is concerned about his/her child's well being.

If I were emperess of the world, it would be required reading before taking a new baby home from the hospital (and certainly one for young single mothers choosing to raise their babies). I'm willing to step out and even suggest it be made mandatory for all educators too! Don't miss this book! I am about to purchase my 50th plus copy.

5 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shifting Book!.......2006-04-20

This book was recommended reading for a behavior management class that I took for my Master's Program. At the time I was teaching, but had no children. This book totally changed the way I approached discipline in the classroom. Since I wasn't a parent at the time,I would often lend out this book to parents of students and very often never got it back. I just kept buying more copies because I really felt that this book was something that all parents should keep and refer back to through the years.

I am now buying another copy for myself and my husband. We have 4 young children and I'm feeling I need a "refresher course" and I'm hoping my husband will read it so that we can be on the same page when we are discipling the kids. You might consider buying two copies, one to keep on your nightstand, and another to lend out to your friends. It's really that great!

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Motivational........2006-04-16

The first 25 pages or so make the case that today's families are more dispersed and isolated than they were pre-WWII, that our nation's growing affluence has led to self-indulgence, and that technological advances have dramatically increased isolation within nuclear families.

The result of this shift is "American children at the onset of puberty (who) face and incredible smorgasbord of opportunities with a deficiency in capabilities. Self-confidence, self-validation, self-discipline, good judgment, and a sense of responsibility are all lacking..."

The authors state that there are "four critical factors that demand our attention" networks, meaningful roles, on-the-job training for life, and parenting resources. Parenting resources is scarcely addressed at all, and networking is given just a couple of pages.

The bulk of the book is about how to provide meaningful roles and on-the-job training for life by providing an apprenticeship in thinking and problem solving. The authors discuss how to understand and strenthen a child's perceptions/thought processes, how to communicate effectively with your children, and how to strengthen various life skills in a meaningful, real-life way.

For me, this book is a real paradigm shift. I've read many books focused on a single aspect of this book - books about affluenza, family meetings, social skills, natural consequences, anxiety, parenting, even books about RDI (Relationship Development Intervention for Autistic Children, which is VERY MUCH in sync with this book), and so on. This book ties all of those facets together and shows how they are related and why they are important to equipping kids to deal productively and effectively with life in the real world.

As I read, I realized that I often step in for my children in the name of expedience - pouring juice for them because I don't want them to spill it, choosing clothes for my daughter because what she chooses doesn't always match, regluing the notes on music flashcards I was making because my 3 year old slapped them on in a very crooked fashion. Now I am considering the unspoken messages of "you're incompetent" that my words and actions unwittingly send my kids. I am consciously trying to take advantage of real, meaningful situations that come up to help my kids perceive themselves as capable.

And that is just one small gem in this book.

The most helpful part of the book is the examples of families putting the author's ideas into practice in specific situations. I personally am having difficulty putting some of the theory into practice - I would have loved examples of how parents can coach elementary aged kids through a massive screaming fight, for example.

All in all, one of my favorite books about raising children.

The bottom line on this book is that you should stop doing everything for your children. Coddling can cripple a child for life. That's a pretty easy premise to accept. However, some of the promises made by this book are not so easy to accept. The authors seem to imply that parents who follow their time-tested strategies can bring all children around. They act as if all children are cut from the same mold and will behave reasonably when treated reasonably. Unfortunately, this isn't necessarily so. On the other hand, regular family dinners and meetings probably won't hurt, either.
