1 out of 5 stars This book was of no use to us.......2007-02-01

We made the changes that were suggested, but found no effect on our child's behavior (which is only mildly hyperactive).

It appears some people have success with this, and that's great. Note however: it is VERY difficult to follow this diet in a family where only one child might need it.

Personally, I believe that following your kid around and critiquing every morsel of food that goes into his mouth, drives everyone crazy.

5 out of 5 stars Why Your Child is Hyperactive.......2005-09-12

It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

5 out of 5 stars The Feingold diet saved my child's life.......2005-04-05

Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS TOOL NEEDED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS.......2004-04-19

Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book! My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, or listen for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience! I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help. No specialist was able to help. I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes. Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!! I explained what I did: exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated. THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!! From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!! She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!! This is the complete truth. I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it! The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!! Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!!

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ THIS BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR CHILD ON MEDICINE.......2003-09-20

I came across this book a few months ago while researching about hyperactive children. My son is 5 years old and he started showing signs of adhd when he was 3. He has had trouble staying in daycares due to his behavior problems and just recently started school and began seeing even more problems. Tried natural drugs and nothing worked till I read this book and changed his diet like this book says. I can not begin to tell you how much this has changed my son. I only wish I would of come across this a few years ago. If you are thinking about putting your child on prescription medicine then please try this first. I would recommend it to anyone!!

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating!.......2007-06-09

This book leads you to believe that you will get instructions on "What to do with your brain injured child." I found it was more like one man's personal story of the development of a therapy program and the his institute. Details of his analysis and people in his life get tiresome and I found myself often thinking. "Okay fine. I agree with the principle but what DO I DO?" There are some sketchy instructions, but I found myself at a loss for how to carry them out since my daughter doesn't understand spoken language. When you are desperate for instructions and frankly don't want to read a story, this book is frustrating!

1 out of 5 stars Use your own critical faculties! .......2006-09-09

My son has Down's Syndrome. My friend suggested I look into Doman's program as several people she knew with typical children were big fans. So I bought this book which offers no real practical advice at all but documents the history of Glenn Doman's research and treatment program. Doman claimed to have developed these treatments with his team in the 50's and 60's at which time other treatments for brain damaged children were completely unsuccessful or worsened the child's situation. Reading the book I thought it seemed authentic and the things he was suggesting didn't seem very different from the early intervention strategies that my son was already benefiting from in the state funded program. I thought perhaps Doman was an early pioneer of this now readily accepted treatment.
I asked my son's physio-therapist - provided by this state funded program - who has a PHD and did her research on children with Down's Syndrome (I know that she knows what she is talking about - I have seen it with my own eyes) - if she had heard of Doman, expecting that he would be a major name in the field. She turned quite white and told me that this program is dangerous. She said that she had seen children with dislocated joints from the treatments and that the program was so instrusive it would ruin our family life and my marriage.
What I think is most instructive is that when I saw one of the 'fans' that my friend knows - and I told her what the physiotherpist had said - she still offered to give me literature to join the program! - she was like some cult member. I am so happy with the state funded program - I don't understand why anyone who wasn't brain damaged/washed themselves would get involved with these people? Please use your critical faculties and check out any program fully before treating your child .

5 out of 5 stars How Could You NOT Do This For Your Brain-Injured Child?.......2006-05-07

This fantastic book taught me more in 2 days than I've learned elsewhere in 2 years. Finally actual help is out there, not just negativity. This is what I expected to learn from my developmental pediatrician, but didn't. It's wonderful to know there are people in this world who give so selflessly for our children. I loved this one so much I ordered "How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb" & "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" I can't wait to see some real improvement in my daughter!!

5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2006-05-03

I have a Down's child. I found this book to be very helpful. There was a bit of weeding of the history of the Institute to be done. But, by following the information I was able to create a program to fit our lifestyle. (It helped to read the other books by the author on Reading, Math, Physical Activity and Knowledge.) I read the author's other books first, and I felt that this book was the missing link I needed to create a program for my child.
If you are looking for a Step A, Step B... it is not quite that clear. This is a guideline...not child specific. But, frankly if it was specific I would be very skeptical. How could one program be good for the wide variety of "brain injured" children that exist?
If you want to help your child, it will take effort on your part. And, it can be time consuming, depending on how far/fast you want your child to advance. But, after only a couple of months mild/moderate effort, I have seen significant progress...and my son amazes his therapists.

3 out of 5 stars NOT a "how to" book.......2004-09-10

A better title for this book might be "How a wonderful, caring physical therapist labored on behalf of brain-injured children". It is an interesting story about the admirable life of Glenn Doman. It is NOT a book about what to DO with your brain-injured child. There was literally no specific information about therapy techniques or teaching protocols. It was not a wasted purchase because it is a beautiful story, but it does not fulfill the promise of the title.

Book Description

Evan, five years old, hardly stands, much less sits, still for more than a few moments. Jessie is eight -- she's adorable...she never finishes anything on time...she's a dreamer. Cal is fifteen -- he is so impulsive that his parents worry he'll try drugs on a whim.

What do these kids have in common? Do they remind you of your own children?

The most talked-about childhood syndrome of the eighties and nineties is ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). This developmental disorder disrupts a child's life and often results in low self-esteem, poor grades and even social and emotional problems. These problems usually are not outgrown -- without help. But does your child have ADHD?

ADHD is characterized by the following groups of behaviors:

Inattention

-- making careless mistakes

-- difficulty sustaining attention

-- problems with listening

-- failure to finish schoolwork or chores

-- difficulties organizing

-- trouble sustaining mental efforts

-- losing things

-- being easily distracted

-- forgetfulness

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

-- fidgeting/squirming

-- trouble staying seated

-- inappropriate running/climbing

-- difficulty playing quietly

-- being on the go/driven

-- talking excessively

-- blurting out answers

-- difficulty awaiting turn

-- often interrupting

All children display many of these behaviors at some point. But-according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, Fourth Edition, for a child to be diagnosed with ADHD, six or more of these symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity must have persisted for at least six months.

Is Your Child Hyperactive? Inattentive? Impulsive? Distractible? offers an invaluable step-by-step program already used by thousands of parents to help you change these behaviors at home. Don't just watch it happen; help your child help himself.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book on ADHD.......2006-06-15

This book is the only one I've found that includes practical exercises that REALLY help children, not only theories as other books I've bought. I highly recommend this excellent resource.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful, even for ADD adults!.......1999-03-27

OK, so you've read Driven to Distraction, and all the other classics you could find on ADD. You understand the problems that ADD poses, and the theories behind it's treatment, but you're still struggling to cope? Help is here! This is the only book I have found that provides what children and ADDults alike are searching so desperately for...REAL STRUCTURE!! :)

I am 33, was diagnosed 4 years ago with ADD/ADHD and even had to leave the workplace because I was such a mess. Like so many people with ADD, medication improved some of my symptoms, but that alone still didn't do it completely. Until I found this book, I was very frustrated by the "try and fail patterns" so inherent in this syndrome! With a little creativity, (and we ADDer's have a lot!) I found it quite easy to tailor the ideas in this book to fit my adult needs and lifestyle and am finding this book a real answer to prayer!

Regardless of the age of your children, every parent of an ADD child should have this book in their armory. I highly recommend it for ADD college students and homemakers as well, remembering what the lack of structure in those situations did to my grades and stress level!

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough! It covers some basic medical treatments as well, so if you can only afford one book, this should be it! (I found this book first at the local library and was so thrilled with it that I ordered a copy of my own. I would highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of it ASAP before it goes out of print as the original addition is nearly 10 years old! This text should be a classic!)

If you are an ADD adult, I would also highly recommend the following 2 resources also available through Amazon: 1)"Driven to Distraction" for a basic overview of how ADD affects our lives, and... 2)"The Sidetracked Home Executives" for homemakers whose homes are completely out of control. I guarantee that together, these 3 books will absolutely change your life, provided you put the tools they offer, to good use! (Prayer helps too!) ENJOY! :)

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I would like to explain why I didn't like this book..........2005-07-10

and why I did not find this book helpful.

My child is now eleven, the same age as Mary Fowler's child is at the end of the book. I picked up this book at the library because, after going through so many years, I thought it might be nice to see another parent's perspective.

Well, first it was nice to see that there is another child on this planet who is my son's twin! As far as behavior is concerned. That was *nice* to read about! On the other hand, her perspective is very different from mine on a lot of issues. She went a completely different route than we did - she had her child diagnosed with ADHD, and treated medically, and also she put him in a special program. We chose not do any of those things, but not because we didn't want to deal with it, rather, we felt a different approach would work better.

We did not want to go the medical route because we did not want to view him as "our child, the problem" and we wanted him to grow up normally. What we did do was all kinds of natural stuff, such as allergy testing, sensory integration therapy, physical therapy, but we kept him in a school setting. It was very hard, but we assumed that he would outgrow most of his more severe symptoms eventually, with lots of love, attention, and therapy. We also kept him in a regular school setting, and asked the teachers to accomodate him, plus got him help with homework, tutoring, etc.

I am not saying that our approach is better, simply that it was the approach that we chose. I don't think that anybody could make that decision for a parent, that is an individual decision that each person has to make on his own. But when I read this book, I knew why I made the decision that I did.

Throughout the book, Mary Fowler refers to her child as a "problem" child, with a terrible disease, ADHD. And it is so hard to have such a child, and nobody can understand how hard it is to have a child with ADHD, it is just so impossible. Well, I would like to say something. My child had severe ADHD, and believe me, it was not easy. However, in no way can the pain of having an ADHD child compare with the pain of a parent who has a child with cancer, for instance, or any other kind of severe medical condition. To call ADHD a "severe" medical condition is simply not true. The majority of the children with ADHD outgrow it as they get older, and almost all of them can lead normal, productive lives.

And even the behavior problems of a child with ADHD... well, I know parents who have real problems with their children, they are totally out of control, and these children - Surprise! - do NOT have ADHD. They may have anger management issues, depression - who knows? There are some children who are harder to raise than others. There are some children who really test every bit of patience that a parent can have. And there are children who are within "normal" range, and parents still have a hard time raising them. Even "easy" children come with their share of problems, too. So the attitude of "poor me" my child has a problem, and nobody can understand how hard it is for me to have a child with such a severe medical condition, well, I just don't go for that, I'm sorry. AND I am talking as someone who has gone through with my child everything Mary Fowler has, and more.

Sometimes we forget to remember the good parts of being a parent, the fun parts of just having a kid and enjoying him, sometimes we have to be reminded to just "enjoy" our children. A medical diagnosis, in my opinion, makes it too easy to focus on their symptoms - and you are constantly thinking in terms of how bad was he today? Is it time to adjust the medication? And you become so focused on constantly cataloguing all your child's symptoms, and you are also constantly reminded - my child has a problem, my child has ADHD, every time you have to remember what to say to report to the doctor, the therapist, whatever. And for me, by just focusing on my child as a kid, I think that it was easier for me, and easier for me to see all the good qualities that my child has, easier for me to allow him some slack (he liked to dig in the backyard all day? okay, some kids have more energy) and not looking at everthing he does as a symptom of a disease.

However, if the medical route is the route you wish to take, this book will be very helpful to you, as it has a lot of information as to what to do and where to go to get the most help.

But whatever you do, don't forget to sometimes just focus on you child's positive qualities (he has to have SOME positive qualities!) and just enjoy his childhood!

4 out of 5 stars A Helpful Guide.......2001-09-14

I read this book in two nights. I would recommend it especially to any parent whose child has been recently diagnosed with ADHD. Especially informative where chapters regarding working with the school system and educators. Clear and easily understood information regarding diagnosis, evaluation, the IEP process, IDEA, 504 plans etc. would be especially helpful to parents entering into the educational system. Chapters on home behavior management and techniques, and information to help parents better understand our wonderful children who live with ADHD will help any parent be a better advocate for their child. Highly recommended, an easy and informative read.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a parent's perspective........1999-07-02

A wise and interesting book, and one of several you ought to read if your child has ADHD. Ms. Fowler includes a wealth of information about ADHD here (relying heavily on Russell Barkeley), but it's from a parent's perspective rather than a psychologist's or doctor's. It is well organized and easily read and understood; the end of each chapter contains a summary (great if you're ADD yourself!) which I found particularly helpful because I'm always looking back into books to find something I read earlier. Ms. Fowler's point of view is refreshing, too. She readily admits her mistakes and valiantly tries to find a way to look at her son and her family that is neither pathological nor mythological. I found this book to be useful, interesting, and, ultimately, inspirational. The only (tiny) quibble I have with it is that the "case study" is only one child. If you read very much about ADHD or ADD, you quickly learn that it manifests itself in a large number of ways. Looking at only one child (who has a pretty severe "case") may confuse parents whose child shows different manifestations of ADHD or ADD and lead them to believe that their family will not be affected very much unless the child is on the far end of the ADHD spectrum. For this reason, I heartily recommend this book but also recommend reading other books about ADHD as well.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference book for parents of children with ADD/.......1998-03-28

Whether you just recently found out that a child you care about is impacted by ADD/ADHD, or if you have known for some time, this book contains valuable information on treatment, education advocacy, and dealing with the trials that can accompany parenting someone with AD(H)D. Perhaps the best part though, is the guilt-reduction that occurs as Mary Fowler takes you through her personal journey of loving, and raising her ADHD son. This book is a "must-have" for parents and teachers alike!

Book Description

John Taylor, Ph.D. is nationally known for his seminars on this subject. He is a clinical psychologist who lives and practices in Salem, Oregon. For many years he wrote an award-winning column on family relationships and mental health for The Oregon Statesman. He is the author of several books, including the highly praised The Hyperactive Child and the Family.
Helping Your Hyperactive/Attention Deficit Child is by far the most comprehensive book on the subject of hyperactivity. Most books take a one-sided approach, be it nutritional, psychological, or medical. Dr. Taylor, however, believes that hyperactive activity/attention deficit disorder requires using all the tools from every method available to achieve the best results for the child. This book reflects this multi-dimensional approach. Among the areas covered are:How to determine if your child has hyperactivity/attention deficit disorder; (includes the Taylor Hyperactivity Screening Checklist)
Approaches to treatment, including medical, nutritional, and drug therapy
The psychological factors, including the child's self-esteem and the impact of his or her behavior on family
Your child at school, including effective teaching approaches, getting help, instilling discipline, and play activities
How to start or join support groups
And much, much more!
If you are the parent or teacher of a hyperactive/attention deficit child or are in the helping professions, this book is essential reading!

There is just not enough good that I can say about Dr. Taylor's book. It literally saved my sanity when my daughter was diagnosed with ADD. Dr Taylor gives short answers to the real world problems associated with this disorder. It was as if I had found a care and feeding manual for this wonderful little girl who was just too much for me, and everybody else. I owe so much to Dr Taylor and I would highly recommend his book to anyone considering buying it. Even if your child has not been diagnosed, the practical suggestions will work for any child.

5 out of 5 stars This book offers real help for parents.......2001-08-19

As the parent of a child with ADHD, I've read a lot of books on the subject and on related conditions. I've investigated many different approaches and therapies. This one book could have replaced my years of research. Dr. Taylor gives the reader a clear, understandable description of why these kids behave the way they do, and of the major options for helping them.

Unlike many other authors, Taylor has dealt with ADHD as a parent, as well as a professional. He is able to see these challenges from the parent's perspective, and his compassion comes across clearly. This is a welcome change for parents who are very tired of being blamed for things over which they have little control. The author's bio notes that he has over 30 years of successful experience in helping families of these challenging kids...and it shows!

The book has a user-friendly approach that can be understood by the layman, but it also provides impressive documentation to support the science. After you finish reading it, I would encourage any parent to share it with their child's teacher. Or, better yet, donate a copy to the school for all the teachers to use.

We have applied Dr. Taylor's recommendations to our child. We did not discontinue the Ritalin. By applying Dr. Taylor's ideas on nutritional supplements, diet modification and sensible parenting together with the medication, our son improved his academic performance from straight "D"s on his report card to all "A"s, "B"s and one "C" in the same academic year. Needless to say we are very proud of our son and very grateful to Dr. Taylor.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and easy to read........2001-01-04

The first third of the book is devoted to explaining what ADHD is, the diagnostic process, and potential causes of the disorder. Any parent who feels that bad parenting is the cause of ADHD (which we often hear from the uninformed) can take heart in her findings in Chapter 3. Here she describes the differences in the behavior of children with ADHD and the typical interactions that occur with parents. But she presents strong arguments against parental behavior being a cause of ADHD. She does point out the negative effects that poor child-rearing practices--beatings, whippings, name-calling-- can have on a child's behavior, as well as the changes that can occur with consistent discipline coupled with respect for the child. This chapter also includes an interesting synopsis of current brain research done to try to determine if ADHD is caused by brain malfunction. She concludes with the results of recent PET-scan studies that involved the frontal lobes, which are involved in regulating attention, activity, and emotional reaction.

The remainder of the book is devoted to what you can do about ADHD. She discusses medical treatment (medication) and therapy (including behavior modification). She also candidly discusses special problems that often occur in children with ADHD like bed-wetting, habitual lying, and stealing. She devotes an entire chapter to discussing the role of the school system, the homework battle and she has suggestions for gaining school cooperation.

The section on Behavior Management Programs for Classroom Use is great if you can convince your school to implement it. But you can also modify it for home use. It describes three models: Currency-based Token Economy, Happy Face Reinforcer, and Contracts. You may also find the "attention tape" a great help for the homework battle. Using the home-school report may be a way to gain greater cooperation for the help you request from your child's teacher. It could even be written into the IEP. This report is one where you target specific behaviors (let the teacher pick 2 or 3 that really present problems at school) to work on together. This list goes back and forth daily and forms the basis for certain privileges. It is a great tool if all parties use it faithfully.

Overall, this book contains so many great tips that it is a must for the reference library of any parent with an ADHD child.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any parent of an ADHD child........1997-09-04

This book is a must for any parent of an ADHD child. This book should be a requirement for parents of ADHD/ADD children. It provides so much information and is a delight to read. Any parent of an ADHD child will find this book both entertaining and enlightening. As the parent of two ADHD children, this book has provided both valuable tools, techniques and insights on how to help my children grow and learn, and tidbits of wisdom and humor to help me cope and continue on. This book helped me stop beating myself and start helping my children and myself. Barbara's book has been a God-send to me and should be on every ADHD child parent's nightstand.

5 out of 5 stars His best first book to read for well kid parents!.......2001-07-23

For all parents, interested in Glenn Doman's techniques on how to increase any child's intelligence, this is the first book to read. Explains how it all begin and gives sample case stories. This is a fun read.

For the most dedicated parents, take the seminars. go to iahp.org

There is hope. Know a friend how's 6 month old was legally blind and doctor said no hope. 6 months later using techniques in this book and of course taking the seminar she can see and will have no problems. btw, she was reading at 9 months old, but no fair she had volunteers helping her 7 days a week 12 hours a day. Masking, Patterning, crawling, hanging, bits, dots, words, oh my.

Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars You CAN help your brain-injured child!.......2000-05-03

All of the other positive reviews on this page are 100% correct. The Institutes staff have been teaching parents of brain-injured children how to make those children well for 45 years. They, and the parents they have taught, already know what the rest of the world is just beginning to suspect: brain development is NOT static. It is an ever-changing process which can be stopped (as it is by traumatic head injury), slowed (as it is by mild head injury or lack of oxygen), but most importantly, can be SPEEDED. The brain-injured child's chief enemy is time. Don't waste any more of it -- read this book! At the very least, you will never look at your child in the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars "Do You Want To Make Your Child Whole?".......2000-01-18

Before you do anything else; read this book! You will not find another like it on the face of the earth; unless it is linked to The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. I'll wager that none of your child's doctors or disability representatives told you anything about The Institutes. I found out about them purely by divine accident. At age 2 1/2, I began some of their "Multiplying Your Baby's Intelligence," methods at home, and my son was reading by age 3 1/2; and his memory and focus have improved dramatically. We will be going to The Institutes later this year, and applying all of their suggested methods for our brain-injured son upon returning home. I will update this review in the future, to tell you how the methods worked out. I believe Glenn Doman and Temple Fay were inspired men who began their years of research with nothing more than a sincere desire to help hurt children become well. What they discovered is you CAN increase brain cell growth; and you CAN create new pathways around the injured area(s) of the brain. Come on, 100,000 hurt children can't be wrong! Yes, it requires a leap of faith; but I already endorse this book and all of their programs. Perhaps that's the first step to making our hurt kids well---by first believing that anything is possible!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE, MAGNIFICENT, EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!!!.......1999-03-23

"What To Do About Your Brain-Injured Child" is one of the greatest books written in the twentieth century. The writer, Glenn J. Doman, has come out with incredible breakthroughs which no one has come up with in the history of mankind. This book has saved lives and by doing so: humanity. This book has become a bible for parents of brain-injured children. Glenn Doman, through his books and his work, has truly helped in saving the world.

5 out of 5 stars I have seen it work first-hand.......1999-01-05

I attended the school at the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential between 1981 and 1984. Though I was not brain injured, I did have a learning disability that the staff of the Institute did help to "cure." I also spent much of my time in the clinic, along with the rest of the children in my class, helping the staff pattern and entertaining the hurt kids. Over the years I witnessed incredible things--children who had previously been uanable to sit upright were now crawling, identifying words and connecting with those around them on a meaningful level. Glenn Doman does not offer a miracle cure-all,and sometimes all he can do is offer the parents a kind word and an attentive ear; but for all of those parents who are now able to see their children succeed far beyond the expectations of doctors and specialists around the world, Doman offers something to the parents of brain injured children that is in short supply: Hope.

P.S. It is interesting to note that when I was younger, I had always just taken it for granted that the Institutes was a good thing. They helped kids--no question about it. It was not until recently that I heard about the controversy surrounding Glenn's ideas and I have to ask: if it doesn't hurt the child, it includes them in their surroundings, and makes them aware of their environment--what's the controversy over?
