4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2005-01-07

Though it is written from a womans view, the author did a pretty good job. I bought the book for my father because my mother just passed away... he hasn't gone through the book yet so I started reading it. A lot of the things in the book don't pretain to him and he isn't going through what others in the book have gone through. But the book is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Special, Well-focused.......1999-11-10

I found this book vitally helpful in understanding the unexpected differences in the ways men grieve a loss--myself, as an example--but it also helped me powerfully in dealing with grieving male friends. It comes in chapters that allow selective reading. But it's very well written, and once you start, you'll want to go on. I strongly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars other resources are available now........1999-10-25

I read this book when it was first published in 1991. Since then the topic has been developed and more valuble resources are available including Golden's "Swallowed by a Snake: The Gift of the Masculine Side of Healing."

4 out of 5 stars Well written and useful.......1999-10-20

If you liked this book, also try "The Healing Journey Through Grief" by Phil Rich. There is also a Clinician's Guide available. This book is one in a series of self help journaling books designed to help people through life issues, and breaks the process into clear cut stages with information and journaling exercises throughout to help people understand, write about, and work through their issues and difficulties. The other books in the series, all by Phil Rich and other co-authors)include a book on journaling for individuals (The Healing Journey) and one on journaling for couples("The Healing Journey for Couples") and others ("The Healing Journey Through...") on divorce, menopause, job loss, retirement, and addiction.

5 out of 5 stars This story is so beautiful.......2007-01-12

A Christmas tradition to be read every year. I must point out that this edition does not include the CD (which you definitely need to have!) but if you like to play the songs yourself, it includes the score. Nice print, comfortable to read... Just great.

5 out of 5 stars Not Forgotten Carols.......2007-01-10

I got tired of our son borrowing ours and not returning it until after Christmas so we got him his own...finally. We love this story.

5 out of 5 stars Best Christmas Story.......2006-12-06

For a long time this has been my favorite Christmas story. It brings back Christ in Christmas and teaches us that it isn't about the material gifts we are given but the spiritual. You can't go wrong with this book. We read it every year.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring story that our family cherishes........1997-12-20

This book releases a joy that we should experience year 'round. Each Christmas my family and I travel to see our extended family across the State. For the past several years the tape of "The Forgotten Carols" accompanies us. It has become as much a part of our Christmas as our other coveted traditions. No matter how many times we listen to this story, we marvel at the joy it inspires in us all. My children are 13 and 11 and still request this wonderous story. Thank you for shareing such a delightful story that has enriched our lives! Merry Christmas. --Inpost

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, humbling,.......1997-10-08

Michael McLean has taken those whose stories were never told about the nativity and put them to music. He as also presented their personalities and feelings - like the innkeeper, the shepherds. He continues on to encourage our brothers and sisters who are homeless, by reminding each of us that Christ too was without a home, yet accoplished so very much. Personnaly, Brother McLean brings to life the feelings of a barren women like myself, the pain that we've felt, yet the joy we have as we share in the lives of others children. An absolutely inspiring, encouraging and humbling book - so creative, in that it is not only a story book, but is complete with sheet music and a tape is available to play while you read it.

    Book Description

Much has been written about the modern caregiver who, more often than not, is an older woman assuming the care of parent, spouse, or child. But in recent years the demographics of caregivers have changed. More men are taking up the roll of primary care provider for a loved one. Recent studies estimate that between 14 and 18 percent of men ranging in age from nineteen to later middle age are providing care to a family member or friend with a serious illness or disability. And in men seventy-five or older, there are more husbands caring for wives than vice versa. Much more needs to be learned about their experiences and the challenges they face.

Betty J. Kramer and Edward H. Thompson Jr., both experienced researchers in the area of men as caregivers, provide an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the topic in this collection of articles from various experts in gerontology, social work, psychology, and sociology. Special consideration is given to gay male caregivers of partners with AIDS, men who care for a family member with dementia, fathers of adult children with mental disabilities, spousal care of women with cancer, and sons caring for parents.

This valuable collection of current research addresses a much neglected but vitally important area of caregiving.

    Book Description

Today, more and more caregivers are male. Despite this fact, the vast majority of research on caregiving has centered on the experience of the female caregiver. This volume addresses the fundamental gap in our knowledge in theories about the growing male subpopulation of caregivers. The authors identify the serious limitations that result from viewing male caregivers through the lens of women's experiences and call for an unbiased and fresh prespective in future research. Special consideration is given to men who care for a family member with dementia; father's of adult children with mental retardation; gay male caregivers with partners with AIDS; and sons and parent care.

3 out of 5 stars forgotten men in an important role.......2003-08-24

As this book notes, one-third of all caregivers are male, yet they are either ignored or assumed to be just like their female counterparts. This book peels the onion on the dynamics of men are caregivers. The first section details their existence in this important activity. The second describes how men differ from women while performing the role. The final section looks at special topics and populations of male caregivers. The first two sections are more for academics and the last section may be more suited for clinicians or lay readers. I applaud the editors for seeking multiple audiences. More importantly, this book looks at differing male caregivers (gay as compared to straight, sons as compared to husbands/partners, etc.) Further, the discussion of various diseases (Alzheimer's, breast cancer, etc.) may be of interest to caregivers of either gender or individuals in the medical fields fighting those diseases. At times, this book gets bogged down in statistics and scholarly jargon. Still, this was an important contribution to men's studies and public health literature.

      Book Description

Based on videotaped home observations, Dr. Geiger examines the unique and interactive effects of the gender of the caregiver and the primacy of the caregiver role on parent-infant interaction. Dr. Geiger observed 56 parents of different gender (father-mother) and caregiving role (primary-secondary) interacting with their infant in a non-stressful situation. Then infants were placed under stress in a modified version of the Strange Situation. A gender X caregiving role analysis of variance indicated no gender or role effect for parents' and infants' affiliative behaviors under nonstressful conditions except for fathers' rough tumble play. A caregiving role and/or a gender X role interaction effect was observed on the attachment behaviors of parents (caregiving and displaying affection) and of infants (displaying affection, clinging, moving away, and exploring). Infants' play interaction was most synchronous with that of primary caregiving fathers. Finally, the caregiver role effect indicated on all infants' attachment behaviors under stress showed a distinctive preference for primary caregivers (fathers or mothers) with disregard for gender. Dr. Geiger's study indicates that primary caregiving fathers can be as competent as primary and secondary caregiving mothers. They were more affectionate, and despite an increased amount of assumed caregiving and household chores, primary caregiving fathers were more involved and in greater synchrony with their infant's play activities than primary or secondary caregiving mothers. This study challenges sex-role stereotypes and suggests benefits of modeling a more egalitarian upbringing. It presents strategies to resolve the dilemma of day care for infants. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars, and other researchers involved with early childhood education, socioemotional development of children, and developmental psychology, especially once it is acknowledged that father care in the home for infants less than one year of age has become the most common form of primary nonmaternal care arrangement (21.6%) adopted by employed mothers.

5 out of 5 stars You have got to read this!!!!.......2005-11-14

I first heard The Forgotten Carols when I was about ten or so. My sister read the story out loud for a friend, and I just sat there and listened too. My favorite part is when Uncle John shortens Consatance's name to Connie. The characters are heart warming and the story and the music is beautiful. By the second time you listen to it you'll be singing along.
It is a story you will never forget once you hear it. You'll sing the songs in August and get some really strange looks!!!!
I don't think this helped a whole lot but I had fun writing it^.^
Hope you enjoy the book!!! ^.~

      5 out of 5 stars A New Classic.......2003-05-18

This story, though short is due to become a classic Christmas story much in the same vein as "A Christmas Carol"
Constance is a hurting soul even though she would deny it.
Working as nurse in a city hospital, she is given a special assignment to watch over Uncle John while his family is away for the holidays. What Constance thinks is going to be a routine assignment turns out to be anything but! And what you think is a routine Christmas story is anything but!
I never saw the outcome ahead of time and read it through eyes brimming with tears. The CD is a wonderful additon and gives life to the written word. I will buy this for mysef and for some well chosen friends. We often get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday, and setting aside a special evening to read this book and listen to the music, will center you and prepare your heart to receive the most wonderful gift of all... Christ's love.

5 out of 5 stars A great tale of what CHRISTmas is all about!!.......2002-10-26

I first heard the musical CD in about 1992 and I thought that It was ok, not great. Well about 3 years ago in christmas 1999 I found the book that goes along with it. Once I read the story behind the songs and heard the songs again I was truely touched. It help me put christmas in perspective, and why we celebrate christmas. It is a wonderful book and CD are well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Charming even if a little melodramatic.......2002-03-01

He lays it on pretty thick at points, and can get really sappy. The theology gets pretty weird at times too. Still it does a nice job of cutting through the clutter of Christmas and bringing back a focus on the kind of "person" God is. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Addition to Christmas.......2001-08-15

The story of the Forgotten Carols rekindles the true meaning of Christmas. The book is based around a nurse who doesn't believe in anything that has to do with Christmas and has no family. Her hospital assigns her to go and take care of one family's aging uncle, John. As the story continues, John introduces her to his carols about the forgotten parts of Christmas and the people who played roles that many forget about as they head to the department stores to take part in the materialized part of Christmas. Some of these characters include the innkeeper and the inn, the shepards, and Joseph. This book has been in my family since it came out and we read it many times every holiday season. If you purchase this book I recommend the audio cassette to accompany because it is read by the Glen Yarbrough and it include the Forgotten Carol songs such as "I cry the day I take the tree down," "Joseph:I was not his father, he was mine," and a great rendition of a Messiah medley called "Handel's Dream." This book is a must and will be the perfect addition to your Christmas

            Product Description

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, it is vital that the men in their life move beyond traditional roles, adding new responsibilities like that of caregiver and nurturer. They can be crucially helpful with treatment, recovery and dealing with a myriad of issues that are sure to arise.

Some men will take to the challenge fairly easily. Many more will have doubts, questioning whether they are equal to the uncertain and serious task ahead. Every man will need information, advice and support.

To meet this need, and offer men the assistance and tools they will need to successfully confront the challenges ahead, Men Against Breast Cancer produced a guidebook for men.

This handbook is a no-nonsense highly-focused essential manual for men who are serious about helping women recover from breast cancer. It is invaluable in helping men develop needed skills, and reach new heights of awareness and effectiveness, maximizing the potential to be both stronger men and more compassionate human beings.

This step by step problem-solving approach will enable you to be helpful to the woman in your life who has been affected by breast cancer.

With the right tools, knowledge, skills, and attitude, all men can be extremely helpful in supporting women affected by breast cancer. This survival guide distills what is most important to some key strategic interventions that will lead to a deeper understanding of what the woman and you may experience and more importantly, to meaningful activities.
It is not a long list of superficial social niceties and personalized emotive stories, but a highly structured road map based on many years of practical clinical experience and scientific research as to how men can best help women to negotiate the many complex problems and disruptions caused by breast cancer.
