3 out of 5 stars Pedestrian at best.......2007-10-10

Very few recipes, very few pictures of Elvis, very much a slap-dash cobbled together effort. Nothing unique here other than the wedding cake.

5 out of 5 stars Gladys's cornmeal mush......now at fancy restos they call it "polenta".......2007-02-08

Excellent recipes that surprisingly never call for lard. These are all wonderful, from the burnt-bacon BLT to the ham and apple sauce. The chicken-pot-pie, meatloaf and gravy, biscuits, fried chicken, and corn recipes are standard favorites. There is a false note in the "blueberry pie" recipe, since Elvis was from the river delta (the flatlands), not the hills (the foothills beginning near Jackson, Tennessee, where the author is from). The recipe for Elvis and Priscilla's wedding cake is no doubt attached for the "completists' only of Elvis fans, and adds little practical to the book, but is a welcome curiosity of kitsch. The famous fried-peanut-butter and banana sandwich (not deep fried, it is pan fried, BTW) is actually a common winter staple grilled sandwich for certain southern homes: a real kid pleaser. Banana pudding with Nilla vanilla wafers is here too (although true authentic details are left out). And Elvis's love of thick slices of fresh beefsteak tomatoes is alluded to throughout (the one food item everyone aggress on that he loved).

The combination of author's devotion and the wry art production make this an excellent example of hidden humor. Check out the recipe for glazed donuts and the photo of Elvis making the "ok" sign with thumb and forefinger, and you know for what to look for in the rest of the book. The spaghetti and meatballs recipe with Elvis giving a meatball smile is also too rich to ignore.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Useful.......2006-11-10

It was really fun learning about Elvis....Also, I have made some of the recipes and they were really good....I really enjoyed this cookbook....

3 out of 5 stars Old fashioned, deep fried goodness.......2005-09-10

Elvis loved to eat. Who doesn't know that? This was a good concept for a cook book, and the recipes are quite good. It's comfort food but they made a point to include a chapter on vegetables subtitled with "Yes, the King ate vegetables". There are many typically Southern foods (grits, biscuits and red eye gravy, fried chicken, etc.), but the main dishes are crowd pleasers.

What prevented me from giving this 5 stars is the fact that these recipes are old fashioned. Elvis lived in the days before time saving cooking devices (the microwave, for example) and a lot of prepared foods. No doubt as the child of sharecroppers in Post Depression Era Mississippi they probably spent a lot of time cooking, canning and storing foods than the average person would today. These recipes are more labor intensive than even the most experienced cook is used to.

It includes the famous peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Deep fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. This sandwich is the singular staple of Elvis's diet that has taken on a life of its own. They're good eating, for sure. Lisa Marie said recently about this odd phenomena that will this will never die, she never once saw Elvis eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich (at least not in front of her).

To me, the crowning achievement of this book was the release of the Elvis and Priscilla wedding cake recipe, but it was also the most ridiculous. This is a tremendous project, and they recommend that if you've never prepared something like this before to not only pick up utensils and ingredients at a wholesale bakery shop but to set aside at least 3 days to assemble it. Why someone who would want to replicate this would do this in their home kitchen is beyond me.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept.......2002-04-10

What a great time to be buying cookbooks! While we have for a long while had access to recipe collections and representations of the cuisine of various nationalities and popular restaurants, recently there has been a growing library of culinary tomes that give us the skills for producing creations of our own minds. Titles such as Sauces by James Peterson, the 1-2-3 series by Roxanne Gold, Culinary Artistry, Great Wine Made Simple, and now this book provide us with the information about tastes and combinations of flavors and textures to deconstruct, reconstruct, and just plain construct familiar and novel dishes.

Are You Hungry Tonight provides a brief introduction to the celebrity subject's theory of flavor. Editor Butler broadly groups flavors into four categories based on the purpose they serve in a dish. Thus, Tastes That Push represent the well-known seasonings that we use to balance sauces, for example: Salty, Sweet, and Picante. Tastes That Pull represent those taste elements that highlight underlying flavors. The authors include here Tangy, Vinted, Floral/Herbal, Spiced Aromatic, Funky (pungents or musky flavors), and Bulby (what have commonly been called Aromatics such as onions and garlic). Taste Platforms represent the textures upon which dishes are built. These include Garden Platforms, Starchy ones, Oceanic ones, and Meaty ones (what the Japanese call umami). Finally, the fourth category is Tastes That Punctuate, basically bitters that stop tastes and cleanse the palate.

This model is very useful one. Ms. Butler seems not to have done her research in examining precursors to this model, and makes little reference to other cuisines than the one Elvis constructed during his lifetime. She neglects to include several important items, especially in the Platforms section (breads, pastries, soy products, seitan, and mushrooms as a basis for other flavors, for example). There are similar, usually less complex models, already in the literature. Butler and Presley's model is more extensive than most, however. Surprisingly, there is little space given in the book to theory. The majority of pages is devoted to recipes that demonstrate their combining philosophy. Butler does not describe how Presley took the elements of taste and mixed them to concoct these dishes. (A reader must refer to Culinary Artistry for such guidelines.) She does, however, provide tasting notes after each recipe that dissect the elements used in the dish.

The recipes are very complex, involving multiple steps and sub-recipes. Even a cook enjoying kitchen challenges would be hard pressed to prepare a full meal using this book alone-- one would run out of burners and pans before the dishes were complete. For example, the Honey Glazed Celeriac involves making the glaze, which is a reduction of wine and acids with sauteed aromatics sieved and kept warm, plus Celeriac slices baked and then broiled, plus a garnish of sauteed zucchini with chives, plus Ginger Curry Sauce, a mayonnaise of reduced wine and aromatics whisked with other ingredients.

The writing is an interesting, not entirely successful juxtaposition of aw-shucks, down-home attitude, sophisticated epicurean philosophy, and fancy foods. The recipes are heavy on the Meaty and Oceanic food platforms, making this definitely a carnivore's cookbook. Produce usually stands as garnish and accompaniment to the flesh. In the end, the most special part of the book represent a few precious pages and is underdeveloped. Perhaps a follow-up volume will expound on this interesting culinary model.

When the pursuit of thinness becomes a woman's dominant activity, she not only loses pounds, she also risks losing her dharma, the inner driving force that cultivates genuine happiness. What Are You Hungry For? implores women to stop trusting in dress sizes and start approaching life with absolute consciousness. Like a pair of Zen masters, coauthors Lynn Ginsburg and Mary Taylor subtly squash Western woman's embarrassingly shallow (yet culturally ingrained) belief that looks count above all else. Theirs is an Eastern approach, where mind-body practices, including yoga and meditation, allow women to quiet the outer world, make peace with their present situation, and recognize deeper, more satisfying paths to fulfillment.

The key lies in refining one's habits and mastering techniques to tame one's urges--essential skills for approaching many aspects of life. Step-by-step instructions lead readers through over 20 consciousness-building practices, teaching effective methods for listening to one's body and utilizing its important feedback on hunger and satiation. Ginsburg and Taylor (who conduct workshops on this topic) also present a comprehensive yoga routine, complete with illustrations showing each pose. Throughout this gently empowering guide, the authors' spot-on advice and rationale ring with truth and hope for any woman ready to pursue her specific life's purpose, not merely some random number of pounds. --Liane Thomas

Book Description

Eating disorders, distorted body image, and an overemphasis on dieting-all epidemic among American women-can mask a deep spiritual emptiness. Women often spend precious time and energy focusing on an intense relationship with food when looking within is what's truly necessary to live a balanced and physically healthy life. Traditional diets fail to resolve food and body issues because they impose solutions from the outside. Using methods adapted from yoga practices, What Are You Hungry For? will show readers how fully attentive eating and a mindful relationship with food and their bodies can help fill the void at their cores.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A real winner An eye opener.......2004-04-11

'Accompanying this underlying sense of suffering is a feeling of emptiness. We feel something missing. Inside if us is a void, a longing deep within for some elusive satisfaction. This empty feeling is often experienced physically as gnawing hunger, as if we have a bottomless hole inside. If we fill this void, we must start by asking: what is the source of this feeling of emptiness? For so many women its a longing for spiritual fulfillment that leaves us always hungry and dissatisfied--- We define spirituality as a belief in that which goes beyond our material, corporeal existence, giving us faith that there's more to life than everyday experience. Spirituality is a faith in God, Nature, a higher consciousness, or any other power greater than our singular mortal existence --- When we've lost a spiritual connection in our lives, we may eat and eat in an attempt to fill our inner world. But satisfaction comes only when we're able to rediscover our connection to whatever holds deepest meaning for us'.

This part on page 5 is what grabbed my attention and was a light bulb moment. The only clarification I would make is where she writes 'Spirituality is a faith in God, Nature, a higher consciousness, or any other power greater than our singular mortal existence'. I would have noted any positive God, higher consciousness or power per se, since I think like has yin yang, sun moon, good bad equals or opposites.

I like how the author seeks to educate western women or American women on how and why women in other areas of the world do not have the obesity or eating disorder issues American women have. Like on page 7 'Traditional Western diets fail to resolve the food body conflict because they don't deal with the root cause'.

Page 13 'Growing up in Western society, we're programmed to believe that every problem has a quick and easy solution. Have a headache? Take an aspirin. Coughing? Take a cough suppressant. Feel over weight? Go on a diet. Problem solved.' Of course Americans want it 'now' They want throw away diapers, fast food, and a remote control that changes the channel before you even know what is on.

Beginning on page 101 she shares some easy to do yoga exercises that I have found really do help energize me as well as relax me. More relaxed and energized I am the less interested in between meal eating. I also like her section on page 154 on the importance on becoming still and thankful BEFORE one eats. Some call it saying grace, I call it simply giving thanks and reflecting on the hands that created and brought the food to my plate. I also like how the author reminds the reader that one eating schedule doesn't fit all. I have learned that five small meals per day are best for me, whereas a friend of mine finds two larger healthy meals with two snacks mid morning and mid afternoon work best. And as the author notes on page 158 'a balanced meal is one that fosters good health'.

And finally a reminder in Chapter Ten that 'You are a work in progress' so don't beat yourself up but when you fall, get back up, and keep going.

5 out of 5 stars There is hope out there............2002-03-27

"What Are You Hungry For: Women, Food, and Spirituality" is a true milestone. In a culture that seems to struggle daily with unhealthy, mixed messages, that cloud the perception of women and keep us from being all that we can be, this book cuts through the mire and offers us solutions to our own mental traps. Lynn Ginsburg and Mary Taylor don't merely stay in the "talking at you" mode either. they offer things that you can actually do - practical solutions if you will - that will gradually help undo unhealthy body image problems that many of us struggle with. It is worth noting too, that while the authors are quite serious about their subject, with good reason, they do not get bogged down by taking themselves too seriously. they are wry, witty, and in the process, quite wise. I highly recommend this book. It is certainly refreshing and altogether different than anything else that has been written on the subject of women and body image. It's a must have for women of all ages.

What Are You Hungry for? is a must on every womans bookshelf! Like every woman I know, I have experienced food /body issues. By opening the door to a spiritual healing ,Taylor and Ginsburg give me hope for a healthier future for myself and others. In following the body/mind exercises ,I am able to begin understanding my habitual patterns. As a result,I am changing a life time of unhealthy food /body patterns. As a mother of two; one being a daughter, I find What Are You Hungry For? ,invaluable for the future generation of women in America.Bravo!!

4 out of 5 stars this is a good book..........2002-02-25

...to get you thinking. The authors briefly share each of their previous eating issues and their recovery. They then carry you through the expirince of getting in touch with your deepest needs and desires, which begins with you identifying your "life purpose". You will then incorporate this purpose into the remanider of the exersizes in the book.

From a person who has battled body and food issues for some time, the authors present a new way of viewing my feelings and struggles. Take note that there are many exersizes (which they refer to as "practices") that are time consuming. In addition, to get the most out of this book, you have to be at a place where you are really ready to look at your food/body issues. It is not a diet book, it does not advocate weight loss. The goal, as I see it, is peace.

I personally have yet to follow all the exersizes but believe that when I am ready to truely confront my food/body deamons and take the time for the practices, this will be just what I need. (had i already done more of the exersizes I may have given the book 5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars What Are You Hungry For? provides real solutions!.......2002-02-14

I am thrilled to finally have read a book that examines the root causes of women's food and body issues in terms that I recognize. Finally I feel that I've read a book about what's REALLY happening in my mind as I struggle with dieting and self-image. What Are You Hungry For? closely examines the thoughts and beliefs that shroud women's perceptions of themselves. But the best part is that the book also provides easy, sound, step-by-step exercises with which to alter those perceptions and actually change your behavior, and ultimately your life!

This book gives you a chill up your spine. It's pictures and accounts are amazing and specific. I would reccomend it to any one intersted in the Holocaust period.

5 out of 5 stars A totally absorbing book that I will never forget........1998-09-05

This is indeed a very descriptive book of many pointless sufferings: starvation, humiliation, and torture{mental and physical}. It left a sick feeling in my stomach that such could ever happen just because Hitler wanted the perfect race. Who was he to say? These people were treated like animals. How lucky I felt to be alive and living in a democracy! The book has many sketches to give you a better picture of the horror Joseph Bau and his family had to go through. Even the cover sends chills down your spine. Once you pick it up it will be hard to put down.

Book Description

In Are You Hungry, Dear?, Doris takes her signature line from the show and makes it her own in a book that pairs hilarious episodes and dramatic turning points from her fascinating life with delicious recipes from her own card file. She shares the lessons learned in two marriages and numerous love affairs, her struggles with her own family, and her heroic efforts to build a career and raise a son on her own. Readers who love tough, feisty, judg-mental Marie Barone will see how Doris is all that and more: tough, sweet, brave, direct, and vibrant. Readers will embrace the un-for-get-table life of this very open star, and relate to the issues-like ageism in Hollywood, sex in the senior years, or her daughter-in-law's imperfect meat sauce-Doris cares about passionately.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Genuine and funny, like Doris Roberts herself.......2007-06-11

I've never watched an episode of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, but I nevertheless found it easy to recognize Marie Barone as actress Doris Roberts describes her character. Marie Barone is someone she loves, understands, and appreciates; but she's also who the real-life Doris Roberts flatly refused to become. Although she married at 18, desperately wanted a child and eventually had one, made homes for two husbands, and raised her son, she never once let go of her dream. She became not just an actress, but a Broadway actress. And then, when television called her name, an international star. That's the role in which I learned to appreciate her work: Mildred Krebs, secretary to Remington Steele.

What makes this actress, and her autobiography, so different from those of most other stars who decide to share their life stories? I'd say it's quite simply that this woman never lost her true, genuine self to the make-believe world of her career. She's lived a full and wonderful life as Doris, and that makes her book infinitely more interesting than others in the same genre. Its final segment, in which she takes on the myths that both show business and American culture in general perpetuate about aging, is one of the funniest and yet most telling discussions of this subject that I've ever read.

3 out of 5 stars An Inside Peek at Theatre and Life.......2006-06-09

Are You Hungry Dear is an easy read. Doris shares an inside peek of theatre, her early life as well as some recipes she recommends. I enjoyed reading about her childhood, complete with cold grandparents and a busy, absent mother. Her grit and determination to make a life for herself is truly inspiring.

She also shows just how very self-centered actors are, with no apologies. They crave the attention of everyone and always want the limelight. I would have loved to have read a little more about her son. I found there was not an over abundance of details about her personal life, more on the show business side of things.

1 out of 5 stars Violent and Depressing.......2005-11-11

In this gritty crime novel, author Doris Roberts tries to conjour the ghosts of the pulp greats of the past. Unfortunately her characters are wooden cliches and the action turns gruesomely violent quickly. Roberts attempts at stylish atmospheric flourishes are, frankly, laughable, and the whole thing smacks of the amateurishish ramblings of a freshman creative writing student. A for effort, D- for result.

5 out of 5 stars Hearty and Heart-Felt.......2003-12-29

Doris Roberts seems to be a very hearty, generally happy woman at least that's what the book conveys. A fabulous collection of her very personal memoirs and stories and advice, it's almost like having a conversation with the archetypical grandmother. But far from old-fashioned and foppish, Miss Doris is downright hilarious at times and speaks with the energy and zeal of somebody less than half her age (in fact, she puts most young people to shame when it comes to fully embracing and enjoying life). Her stories, taking place everywhere from New York theatre to Los Angeles tv to her bedroom, are all colorful and more entertaining than fiction ever could be. You can't make this stuff up! She opens herself up admirably, sharing her personal struggles and her darkest times as well as her triumphs and good days. Throughout, the conversational style of her and Danelle Morton's writing makes you feel more like you are spending time with a friend than reading a book. If you want advice from somebody who has been there before, or colorful tales from the world of entertainment, or a touching autobiography, or an endless source of laughter, or just some fabulous recipes (which the book is peppered with) then this book is for you!

2 out of 5 stars Not a Must-Read for Marie Fans.......2003-09-25

I love watching Everybody Loves Raymond. I love every character on the show, including Marie. And I've read and love the books by Patricia Heaton and Ray Ramano. There was no doubt in my mind that I'd love this book too.

I'm sorry to say this, but this book has been very disappointing.

The preface is good, where she makes the comment that "when you love someone you feed them." Fun reading. I enjoyed Parts One and Two, each (only) 3 chapters long, which deal with the tv show and motherhood.

That's why I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1.

But from Part 3 on, I've had trouble picking up the book to continue. It's not that it's bad, it's just boring. Much of her career has been in theater, so most of her experiences deal with people and shows in that field. (people I've never heard of.)

I have to be honest...I have not yet finished this book. If, as I continue reading, the book gets better, I'll come back and write a new review. But as of right now, I'm not even sure I'll be able to finish the book.

I was hoping for something more like the books by Patricia Heaton and Ray Ramano. Funny, remininds me of the show, and easy to relate to. This book is nothing like theirs. If that's what you want, don't bother with this one.

If you've been a fan of Doris Roberts for some time, if you know her work and the field she's most experienced in and you can take or leave Raymond, you may enjoy this book.

Gerard Thomas Straub has given us all a gift in the work of his book, When Did I See You Hungry? Through my eyes as a volunteer missionary nurse to many third world countries, I can attest to the visions one sees in this marvelous book. The pictures themselves tell the stories. As you look into the eyes of our brothers and sisters you see Christ. Straub has depicted this sincerely and with compassion.
I have given this book as gifts to many friends and family members. Some are saddened by the pictures, others are curious. A few are speechless.
It is not until you reach out your hands and touch the lives of those around you will you know what it is like to ask, "When Did I See You Hungry?"
After reading this book, if one does not find compassion deep within them, they are ones looking to be fed.

5 out of 5 stars Great approach to preventing food problems in children!.......2005-03-27

I'm a compulsive overeater and was really pleased that one of the authors of "Overcoming Overeating" had teamed up with another to give us their approach on avoiding food problems. With a 15 month old, I wanted to know what I could do to help my son avoid the same weight/food problems I've always had.

Bucking the conventional wisdom, their advice to feed when/where/what children want has a truth to it that feels very right to me. When you remove the mystic and allure of sweets and "forbidden" foods, they no longer are a scarcity to be consumed endlessly when they're finally available.

Now I understand why the eating disorder specialist I know has all kinds of foods (including candy) in her house for her 3 children.

My only complaint is that the sections on babies could use a little updating. Breastfeeding, including extended breastfeeding, are much more the norm nowadays and the book almost assumes that a bottle is being used. Only cursory attention is given to the role of breastfeeding in a baby or toddler's diet.

Great book, and hopefully a few years from now I'll be able to tell you how well it's working for my family!

5 out of 5 stars Raising Children Free of Food & Weight Problems.......2003-11-09

Eat when you are hungry, eat foods of your own choosing, and stop when you are full. That's the well-done message of these two authors, both of whom have experience with patients with eating disorders and compulsive eating.

These expert authors go over the "myths" of eating -- every meal must be balanced; if you eat now you'll spoil your appetite; you must finish what is on your plate -- in relation to how they affect our attitudes toward food.

Good case histories, anecdotes, and practical advice to make mealtime a pleasure again for all family members! Has one chapter on anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating for those interested in those subjects.

        Book Description

"...at the count of three, we can race for the food we like best..."

When two friends decide to go on a picnic, they never expected it to turn into a party. But gradually, ten more eager picnickers show up, each with an irresistible snack to add to the collection. And of course, as each new friend joins the crowd, calculations are in order: How much of each treat will each one get now? Just when everything is working out neatly, a thirteenth hungry picknicker shows up -- with nothing to offer -- and all the calculations are turned topsy-turvy. Should they let him join in? And, if they do, how will they divide up the picnic?

An uproarious introduction to simple division concepts, illustrated with delectable cut-paper artwork by Golden Kite Award winner Amy Walrod.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2002-10-26

"How Hungry Are You?" is a wonderful children's book. As a mother, I don't mind reading the book over and over again to my three young children. We enjoy the illustrator's colorful pages and find her method of character identification easy to read. The authors found a fun way to teach children about friendship and math. I strongly recommend this book!
