Sufferer of postpartum Anxiety.......2007-04-03
I can honestly say that I have purchased about 15-20 books regarding PPD in the last year and this book has been the most informative, encouraging and beneficial to me, along with being easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from PPD, or a spouse/friend of someone suffering from this. When you are a sufferer, you find yourself agonizing over why you are feeling the way you do. Finally, someone has written a book that answers all the questions you are asking. This book will help you get through your day, this book will help you realize that this dark cloud will not stay forever, this book will help you get better.
Very practical to the point information that doesn't create anxiety.......2007-01-16
Being a PPD survivor, I feel that out of all the books I read, this one was the best. It provided stories I could relate to, factual information about postpartum mood disorders, questions about medication and separate sections for family and healthcare providers.
It is presented in such a way, so that if one is feeling vulnerable it won't create added anxiety.
I still reference this book for education purposes.

very helpful and easy read.......2006-07-16
so many folks fall into depression during or shortly following pregnancy. changes in the body, hormone levels, neurotransmitters, SLEEP DEPRIVATION, changes in perceptions of who we are, what is expected of us, finances, support from family and friends, our bodily image, realization of the seriousness of the new responsibility ... it's natural to feel this depression, for many folks, for the first time in their lives. this book takes folks for where they're at, provides numerous treatments / techniques / exercises that many people have found helpful in pulling themselves out from post-partum depression. this was a fairly light read, welcomed, and motivating! good to very good content. many people have reported to me that this book has been helpful to them. i think that it is a very good book and is worth the price. some folks, especially those who've had episodes of depression or family histories of perinatal depression might consider reading the book as a way of reducing the likelihood of onset. it offers some helpful information for family and friends.
A good start.......2006-07-12
A great unbiased view of prenatal and postpartum depression. Well written as a good start for anyone looking for information on this subject.

Book Description
In 1992, Brunner/Mazel published the first book ever written on the subject of applying hypnosis in the treatment of depressed individuals. Hypnosis and the Treatment of Depressions, by Michael Yapko, not only withstood the test of colleagues previously dismissive of hypnotherapy's value as a tool of treatment, but thrived in the face of it. The ideas and methods of the book overcome a previously skeptical audience and are now frequently taught at workshops and conferences by professional societies. In 2001, Yapko published a second book on the subject with Brunner-Routledge, Treating Depression with Hypnosis, which was later awarded the prestigious Arthur Shapiro Award from the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and named "the best book of the year on clinical hypnosis."
Now, Yapko proposes a book intended to diversify the range of topics to consider and increase the number of knowledgeable contributors on the subject of treating depression with hypnosis. The book will feature chapter contributions by experts on using hypnosis to treat specific forms of depression, with assessment and intervention strategies as well as sample transcripts of the use of hypnosis in therapy sessions. As a practical guidebook for clinicians looking to add to their treatment protocols, Hypnosis and Treating Depression: Advances in Clinical Science will provide an updated and comprehensive volume on therapeutic use of hypnosis in the treatment of depression.

Breaking the Patterns of Depression

Book Description
Depression is a debilitating human condition and a common cause of suffering worldwide. This elicits a sense of urgency for mental health professionals to meet this challenge of the treatment of depression. Hypnosis plays a vital role in that treatment and in the efficacy of psychotherapy.
This book focuses on the structuring and delivering of hypnotic interventions for major depression, with a substantial use of concepts and techniques from cognitive-behavioral and strategic approaches as a foundation. Current research on depression is used in this book to emphasize the still-growing knowledge of depression. Hypnosis has shown itself to be effective in not only reducing symptoms, but in teaching the skills (such as rationale thinking, effective problem-solving and coping strategies, and positive relationship skills) that can even prevent recurrences. Mental health professionals will find the detailed examples of hypnotic strategies invaluable to their own practice and application of hypnosis in the treatment of depression.
Customer Reviews:
A Valuable Resource for Mental Health Therapists.......2007-03-07
This book is a follow-up to Dr. Michael Yapko's original text, Hypnosis and the Treatment of Depressions. It further expands and refines his ideas, presenting a theoretically sound approach for utilizing hypnosis as a vehicle for the delivery of well-researched treatments for depression, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
I found this book to be a valuable resource, full of relevant information presented in a concise and coherent manner, and easy to read. It reviews what is known about depression, discusses hypnosis and its clinical applications, and examines how to engage clients hypnotically while addressing issues that often contribute to depression. Such issues include client attributional styles, ambiguity, negative expectations, perceptions of controllability, and coping styles. The book also includes two-column transcripts of actual therapy sessions, wherein session content is presented side-by-side with explanatory commentary and analysis. Studying these sessions enhanced my understanding of the ideas presented in this book.
This book is most helpful for readers who already have clinical training and experience in both psychotherapy and hypnosis. As a Psychotherapist (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist), and a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, I consider this book to be essential reading for therapists working hypnotically with depression, along with other texts by Dr. Yapko, specifically Trancework and Hypnosis and the Treatment of Depressions.
A helpful clinical guide.......2002-05-12
This is a readable book on using hypnosis as an adjunct to cognitive, behavioral, or interpersonal therapy of depression. The author's views are sensible, balanced, and clinically relevant. He references the clinical and research literature to butress his arguments. The book is a bit skimpy for the price. The author refers the reader to his other books, CDs, and tapes for futher information, making this a bit like an infomercial. In addition, the author sometimes sets up a straw man to make his points. For example, he writes about therapists who tell their clients to "get their anger out" by pounding a chair with a bat. This example sounds like a caricature of therapy and I can't believe anyone but the most incompetent novice therapist would take such a stance -- but living on the East Coast, I may be ignorant of how therapy is practiced in California where the author resides. Nonetheless, the book contains valuable insights for clinicians who treat depression. It is also one of the few books that deals with the use of hypnosis in depression, which used to be a strict "no-no" according to traditional schools of hypnosis. In that sense this book is a breath of fresh air in the often dogmatic and opinionated world of hypnosis.

Book Description
Until the early 1980s, there was no official diagnosis for depression in children. But children can, and do, become depressed. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health now estimates that 2.5 million youngsters under eighteen have experienced clinical depression--and the real number may be higher still. "Help Me, I'm Sad" discusses how to tell if your child is at risk; how to spot symptoms; depression's link with other problems and its impact on the family; teen suicide; finding the right diagnosis, therapist, and treatment; and what you can do to help. For parents who have--or suspect they may have--depressed children, here is practical, easy-to-understand information from a compassionate and trustworthy source.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2005-02-15
I found this book to be very informative and highly recommend it to anyone concerned with how "sad" or withdrawn their child is.
Gotta Start Somewhere.......2001-11-16
Although adult depression has been recognized for decades, childhood depression has only been considered since the 1980's. Previously, it was simply thought that children couldn't be depressed. Perhaps this is because (as is learned from this book) the lethargy and weepiness that adults and adolescents experience during depression, in children is often expressed as hostility. The depressed children may in fact be the troublemakers and the discipline problems.
This book reports on few case histories, but because only twenty years of research are behind this subject, that isn't surprising. Most of the descriptive text looks at the stages of childhood depression, and what to expect from various treatment options. The authors do suggest that while several stressful situations such as parental divorce, or placement in foster care can lead to childhood depression, in most cases, there will be no single, obvious, precipitating factor, and parents should not look for one.
More than once, the authors state that depression is not the fault of the parents, or the result of bad parenting. Of course, what are they going to say, if they want parents to buy their book? Parents don't want to be blamed. At any rate, if they are voluntarily looking for help, the family is probably at a point where placing blame will not solve anything, so the authors are undoubtedly correct in this approach. The problem is that this approach appears to slant the book toward physiological causes of depression almost to the exclusion of environmental factors.
Nonetheless, the information presented is readable, clear, and written in a soothing narrative voice. Just reading the book may give relief to parents who are concerned about a child.
The book neatly describes external symptoms of childhood depression, offering a great deal of help to parents and people who work with children in identifying children who may be depressed. Much of the book is given over to choosing a therapist. This is so thoroughly commendable, I don't know where to begin, because it is not uncommon for people to walk into a therapist's office, and immediately turn over all their power. This book will help families hold onto themselves until they are certain they have the right person, not just for the child but for the whole family.
I would recommend this book over most of the others addressing this topic.
A valuable resource for families of depressed children.......2001-09-21
This is a very valuable book for families of depressed children, and I highly recommend it. It contains essential information, thoroughly and clearly covered. One section I particularly liked discussed the effect a depressed child has on family members and family dynamics.
"Help Me, I'm Sad" first addresses diagnosing depression in a child, including what I had never seen before: symptom lists specific to children at different stages of childhood, infants to teenagers. Companion illnesses that might indicate depression are also discussed as part of the diagnosis section.
The treatment section covers how to find effective treatment, whether therapy, medication or both, including questions to ask a potential therapist. The last section, on preventing depression, contains suggestions on how to raise an emotionally resilient child. All in all, a complete, compassionate resource for parents and others who have a depressed child in their lives.
Most Comprehensive Book for Parents with Depressed Teens.......2000-07-11
Dr. Fassler and Miss Dumas do an amazing job at organizing this book in the most efficient manner. The doctor with utmost clarity lists the symptoms of depression for each age group up to and including young adulthood. He does justice to new research revealing that symptoms may be dependant upon the patient's age. Moreover, he highlights the long-avoided fact that even toddlers can suffer from clinical depression. He also briefly examines the various related affective disorders common among young people and how they can be detected also. The chapter on suicide and suicide recognition and prevention is well-written in that it provides all the vital information without going into graphic details. In addition to discussing all forms of treatment types, schools of thought, and classes of mental healthcare professionals in an easily understandable manner, the doctor offers pragmatic advice on seeking help for the child and the child's family. All too often the devastating effects of depression on other family members are ignored with tragic consequences. Dr. Fassler makes sure that this point is stressed. He also helps the reader choose a good therapist and treatment plan for his/her child. Finally, he discusses ways in which depression can be prevented, and how good parenting can affect the child's chance of growing up to become a healthy adult. The only thing I found disappointing was Dr. Fassler's bias towards the physiological nature of affective disorders. Understanding the biochemical aspects of depression is crucial in effectively treating the illness for much of the symptoms are linked to somatic disorders in the brain.
A reassuring and thorough guide for parents and pros........1997-10-29
If you're the parent of a depressed child -- or think you might be -- this is a must-read. It's a reassuring, gentle but completely informative guide to all aspects of childhood depression. The part I liked best? How to get help for your child. It includes the best discussion of medications and other treatments I've ever read. This book makes an extremely sensitive, scary and complex subject easy to understand.

Customer Reviews:
Not Bad.....BUT................2003-12-26
This book was OK but I have a few complaints that really bothered me. First, it's written in almost too easy to read language (5th grade-ish). Second, some of the illustrations are laughable (lifting soupcans). Third, the references to training programs that coincide with cars (SUV training, Truck training...). Fourth, too many stories about Joe So-and-so (who did this and that) to illustrate points.
From chapter 3 up until the chapter titled, "Your Exercise Prescription" I was pleased, but the points I mentioned leave a somewhat bad taste in my mouth.
The Healing Power of Dr. Linn Goldbeg: Why i am so moved........2000-05-05
Once in a great while a book so powerful comes along that it moves our lives in a new direction and reinvigerates us towards action. Dr. Goldberg's book is just such an example. With fluid use of language and stunning insights into what we can do better as humans, along with usefully displayed examples with true models, Golberg shows us how to conquer the obstacles that have become the bain of 21st century American existence: disease riddled lives due to the inactivity and complacency that surrounds modern humanity. This monument of a work clearly puts Goldberg in the small group of modern American doctors such as Dr. Ruth, C. Everett Koop, and Dr. Dolittle that have had such a surprisingly significant impact on everyday life while coming at their topic from the field of medicine. I praise this giant piece of work and the equally large man and his effort that went forth towards its' creation. God Bless Linn Goldberg. Cheers.
Insighful and Extremely Helpful!.......2000-05-03
Not only does this guide give extremely helpful ways and tips to improve your health significantly, but the author's use of prose is remarkable and captivates the reader. Furthurmore, the exercise models and pictures are well placed and are invaluable to this mastery of literature.

A truly important guide for patients.......2007-07-25
Orthomolecular treatment of physiological and psychological problems attempts to heal the patient by normalizing the body's natural balance of nutrients (and other essential molecules), especially the amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
Nutritional specialist and chiropractic physician, Dr. Rodger H. Murphree advocates orthomolecular treatment for anxiety and depression after carefully weighing the odds of conventionally used anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. In his book Treating and Beating Anxiety and Depression with Orthomolecular Medicine, he informs about the less-known but paralyzing harms of antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs. By comparing these with the innocuous orthomolecular medicine, Dr. Murphree advises all sufferers of anxiety and depression to heal better and completely with natural medication.
The book has detailed information about the way our body and mind work, and the causes of anxiety and depression. It is an easy-to-read book, not demanding a background in medicine or biology. Book Description
Late-life depression can be addressed. This practice-oriented, research-based casebook draws on the authors' extensive clinical and academic experience to provide an essential resource for practitioners and researchers.
Not only is depression among the elderly treatable but, given its increase in incidence and a rapidly aging population, it is a critical issue for the mental-health and medical communities. The authors review the range of late-life depressive syndromes and the strategies for assessing and treating them, and illustrate the problems and principles with fourteen extended case studies-rare in the geropsychology literature and the core of the book. They also provide a guide to medications, screening tools, innovative models, and supplementary resources, invaluable tools for mental-health professionals and medical practitioners alike.
