Philip Van Munching sounds like a pretty cool dad. True, he'd rather his daughters steer clear of drugs and alcohol and avoid having sex until after he's dead, but he's well aware of the fact that they're living in the real world. In Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (so they can look up your skirt), this father of two offers practical advice to teenage girls in a series of fresh and funny chapters on everything from Fate to Faith to Boyfriends, The Internet, and How to be Happy. Consider what he has to say about Tattoos: "If you ever seriously think about getting one do yourself a favor first. Go to the drawer where you keep your T-shirts and take a good look at them. What's on them? Got any designer names or funny sayings? Or do you have T-shirts with pictures of cartoon animals? Wait, of course you don't: you had the animal T-shirts a few years ago, but you've gotten rid of them. You outgrew them." To further prove his point, he suggests checking out "your folks' old high school yearbooks" for more evidence that what's cool today won't be forever. One thing his girls can likely count on to remain constant, however, is their dad's obvious love and respect for them, as Van Munching appears infinitely curious about their current lives and the challenges they will face in the future. -Patrick Jennings.

Book Description

Life can be pretty tricky when you're a teenage girl.

New things matter: Clothes. Parties. Boys. Suddenly being liked and being popular don't mean the same thing. Your parents get completely bizarre when the subject of dating comes up. A friend you've had forever stabs you in the back for no good reason. Everybody you know seems to feel free to comment on your constantly changing body. Drugs and alcohol go from being what you see "bad" kids doing on television shows to what you see your friends doing when no adults are around. How are you supposed to deal?

Since life doesn't come with a set of instructions, it helps to turn to people who have been through the stuff that you're facing. Even parents can help. (Really!) In Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (so they can look up your skirt), former teenage boy -- and current dad of two daughters -- Philip Van Munching helps guide you through some of life's most confusing topics. From Beauty to Grief, from Sex to Fate, Van Munching covers the things you most want to know about and, in his wise, warm, and funny way, offers advice on how you can become the young woman you most want to be.

1 out of 5 stars Dads, talk to your daughters...........2007-07-10

This is pathetic. Cute. Funny. But should never be a substitute for developing and nurturing a relationship with your daughter. As 1 of 4 girls growing up and the mother of 2 daughters, I know what a girl needs: open communication with her father; unconditional love and support; and the self confidence it takes to judge each situation rationally and self assuredly. Dad, if you have to give your daughter this book to read so she knows what to do when the S-word becomes an issue, then you're NOT doing your job as a parent.

Not to mention that my son (whose older sisters, mother and father certainly made sure he respected girls!) would be totally insulted to know that any one would think he is only interested in the opposite sex so that he can get take advantage of her?? He and his college buddies think girls are great just because they are. And once he's read it, I'm sure he'll be happy to share his opinion!

This book is pretty much for silly parents who aren't comfortable raising their kids. Or for woman who are NOT ok with making sound judgments about men and simply saying, 'no, thanks'. It is certainly not appropriate as a 'advise handbook' for young girls.

4 out of 5 stars I read it to my 2 1/2 year old~!.......2007-01-26

Although my daughter doesn't quite appreciate nor understand it, I enjoy reading this simple yet touching book. Yes, most of it is common sense, but not everyone has the mind to write a book of sound advice for their kids.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2006-12-08

Funny, yet interesting. It opens up lots of topics for discussion with my daughter. Really a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for pre-teen and teenage girls.......2006-11-03

My daughter really enjoyed reading this book. He helps young girls to see that they are valuable and important and should examine what boys are thinking and saying to them carefully. Although it's nice to feel boys find you attractive, he helps them understand in a really clean way why its more important to feel attractive from the inside out. It is a book that can help your daughter feel stronger about herself and her place in the world of dating and boys. It is probably more helpful for older girls but my preteen daughter got a lot out of it. I will save this one for her to read again when she is a little older becaue the advice will still apply. Overall, it's a good book because its says what most parents would like their daughters to hear if they could just get them to really listen--it's so much nicer when you have a nice, funny book to help you.

Okay, I just turned thirteen. So for my birthday, I get to go to B&N. (I'm a book worm) As I'm looking through the teens area, I notice this book. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek, Right? Wrong. Hurt very much. That is to say that I was Laughing so hard, I was sure my sides were going to split. My dad is a major Worry Wort. I understand why he worrys, though. This book is just like my dad, only much funnier. And my dad is pretty funny. So this book is great. I highly recomend this for teen girls. No I'm not saying you have probs, but if for nothing else, It's a funny book. The things he talks about in the book ARE important, and it is important to wipe the tears out of your eyes so you could read it. My mom was busting up and nodding her head at the same time. My dad aproves of it as well. My sis is eight, and I'll give it to her when I'm done with it. So it's good for every one. I don't think boys will like it very much, though...

Every now and again something wonderfull comes into our lives.
For this grandfather, at first, it was my own three boys. Then it was my four grandsons. And now it is this grand book that helps me relive thoes God given moments.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for the Little Guys from Seven to Seventy.......2006-03-17

While many of the captions and poems are sometimes a bit banal to an adult, they were fresh and new for a child. The little boys (and girls) in my life really enjoyed them and the book is a great read for little kids. They and I particularly love the artwork, which is superb.

5 out of 5 stars what little boys are made of:loving who they are & who............2000-02-01

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book, which is full of sweet and humorous short paragraphs about little boys. The darling illustrations actually had me mildly yearning for a 'little blue bundle' despite the fact I have (and thoroughly enjoy) little girls. This would be a perfect new baby gift.

Book Description

A chronicle of the struggles, bravado, and irrepressible sexuality of young men.

Will McBride, an American who has spent his adult life in Germany, has made one of the great extended photographic portraits of male adolescence, created over the course of his forty-year career as a photographer. In his studio work and in his reportage for such magazines as Twen, McBride has focused on young men as they come to terms with their inner and outer development.

McBride creates a portrait of the young male that is more revealing than those available in countless books, plays, movies, and television shows. In his work, young men discover the power of their own sexuality, fall in love, suffer the imposition of the regimentation of study and religion, seek comfort, flaunt their courage, and play with the unfettered, goofy energy of boys. Clearly made in collaboration with his subjects, McBride's photographs are as telling and sensual as they are unforgettable.

1 out of 5 stars not so good.......2007-09-10

I made the mistake of ordering this book without reading any reviews. I too was expecting a book about teens becoming men but was very disturbed by see naked children fill its pages. Maybe it's just me but I don't find that kind of art appealing. I emailed the seller and asked if i could return this item and was never replied too.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-03-13

This book was ok. It was not what I expected it to be and hoped for more pictures and more in depth study of the subjects. It was a wide generalized pictoral/essay. I dont think I would buy the book again. The front cover was very nice but not much else in it.

1 out of 5 stars Very Misleading.......2006-11-26

I was under the interpritation that this book would be a photograph filled book of boys becoming men the struggle of puberty and etc. But the unsettleing thing that I did not think of was there are pictures of naked children in this book. I appriciate art very much but to me naked children whether it "art" or not is till considered child pornography.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant tribute to the lost art of ritual and manhood.......2006-05-10

One of the reviewers below - interestingly the one with the longest tirade and the most misspelled words - sadly reflects the puritanical revulsion and hypocritical rebuke of so many works of art that involve male nudity. The poor guy actually exposes more of his own internal sexual disorientation than he probably realizes. His psyche is disrobed when he protests that Will McBride's photographic journal is "sexual and the only real purpose would be to get people hot and bothered."

Reviewer C. Greene is obviously a true Son of the South. Shackled with so much sexual repression, he can't help but accuse Will McBride of leading him into temptation. It's really rather funny when you think of it.

C. Greene's accusation that a book's intent is to get people "hot and bothered" says everything about C. Greene's internal world and nothing at all about Will McBride.

4 out of 5 stars Thinly veiled, if.......2006-03-24

I purchased this book to procure images for a sociological survey on attitudes toward pornography. The book does not disappoint.
There isn't any text with the images, besides some poetry, but there is a lengthy introduction (as introductions go lengthwise), which I read most of.
As you might expect, the introduction, by Guy Davenport, is basically a very suave attempt to distractthe viewer/reader from the fact that when it comes down to it, this is a book full of photos of naked teen boys taken by a man throughout his lifetime. At times the photographer was 5 years older than his subjects, and at times the photograpgher was 40 years older than his subjects. The introduction talks about the "hidden emotional lives" of teenagers, and how McBride has gained their trust enough to enter that private world and photograph it. To this end, looking at the photos of a naked boy holding a soccer ball, I find myself thinking I don't know if I've ever known or even heard of anyone playing soccer nude on a balcony; that's not a private emotional moment, it's engineered. I have heard of men getting close to boys and coaxing their clothes off for photos, though, and then for sexy photos, and then for sex. In fact, if you know your predator psychology and practice, or even if you've just been watching the news lately, getting close and gaining trust is exactly what predators do.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not accusing Will McBride of having sex with any of his subjects, or with young boys he didn't photograph. But that doesn't mean that it isn't a possibility, or a likelihood.
The introduction brings out the big guns and starts talking about Twain and Rockwell, too. He uses one whopper quote from the Twain novel Tom Sawyer Abroad: "Clothes is well enough in school, and in towns, and at balls, too, but there ain't no sense in them when there ain't no civilization ...and fussiness around." That's cute, because it's a sly way of equating boys skinny dipping in 1850 to Americans abroad photographing Germans in locker rooms (where one is supposed to be naked, remember) in 1980. There is no comparison. The intro writer also brings up Henry Tuke and the fact that some of his boy nudes hang in famous museums and houses of the world. Tuke I can accept; he truly went out to the coast and painted boys doing what they did every day. To my knowledge, he never went to a sculptor's studio specifically because there was a naked boy there posing. I don't believe the introduction brings up Baron von Gloeden (who produced literally thousands of tintypes of nude Itallian boys, and was the lover of a few) or Oscar Wilde, which is also very crafty.
In this whole discussion, culture cannot be overlooked. I have spent little time in Europe myself, but I am fully capable of understanding that different peoples have different traditions, and that Europeans, in general, are more accepting of nudity than we Americans with our stout protestant background. The introduction brings up some silly little African tribes, some sect in Japan, etc. Once again, the comparison is not there, though. A native people living unchanged in the middle of ancestral plains not wearing clothes ever at all is different than a Post-Modern Age 9th grader being stripped and placed in an arrangement of cardboard boxes with 15 other naked men and boys.
The last big punch in the introduction is also the most predicateble: "if you don't like the images of nudity in this book, then you're ignorant and proodish." I don't have a problem in the world with nudity. I have a problem with the exploitation thereof. I have a problem with a 50 year old man photographer getting naked with a 16 year old boy and taking photos together.
If we want to let people do whatever they want to do with a camera, then let's do it and call it what it is. Because I know that as sure as the sun rises every day, if I take my Kodak EasyShare and pay some skaters to toss off their clothes and stand really really close to each other, then I'll get arrested. It's sexual and the only real purpose would be to get people hot and bothered.
Also, if you're planning on buying this book, be aware that it's physically a big book - like 11x13, so be sure you've got somewhere to put it.

Book Description

"Mayday! Landed on river. Engine out.
Floating toward the falls."

When the engine of their float plane fails during a water landing near the head of Canada's monumental Virginia Falls, what began as a sightseeing detour turns into a survival mission for two high-school students and their elderly companion.

With the brutal sub arctic winter about to fall like a hammer, Gabe Rogers, his boarding-school roommate, Raymond Providence, and Raymond's great-uncle, Johnny Raven, are trapped in a deadly wilderness. Braving icy rapids and desperately hunting for moose in their struggle to fend off starvation, all three travelers must rely on the others' knowledge and courage, or survival is out of the question.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wilderness Survival.......2007-06-30

Gabe's father works as a diamond excavator in Canada. Gabe decides to go to boarding school nearby in order to be able to see his father more often. His roommate is a native Canadian, a guy named Raymond who has trouble adjusting to the school routine after living in a small village his whole life.

Gabe is interested in going in a small plane to see the scenery in the area. His father arranges for him to ride along when one of Gabe's classmates and a village elder are flown to their home. Not until that day does Gabe find out that his roommate Raymond is dropping out of school and going home again.

On their way to Raymond's village, the pilot goes off-course and ends up dying trying to save the stalling plane. Now Gabe, Raymond, and the village elder, Johnny, are alone in the wilderness and fighting to survive. With winter coming on and temperatures well below zero on a daily basis, things are getting desperate.

I liked the information about surviving in the wilderness, although I don't expect I would ever need it. I also liked the growth of the characters and their process of learning to rely on themselves and on each other.

However, this book was pretty close in plot to some of Gary Paulsen's stories, which I think are better written.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!.......2007-05-29

I bought this book to use in a literature unit with two 8th-grade homeschoolers, one an avid reader, and the other a very reluctant reader. The book was a hit with both! The reluctant reader even started reading ahead on his own because he wanted to find out how the story turned out. The story stimulated some great discussions on literary technique (foreshadowing, cliffhangers), social and cultural ideas, wilderness survival, making choices, and gaining maturity through adversity. There were also lots of opporunities to expand the boys' vocabulary.

We highly recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Far North .......2007-02-06

This is the best survival book since hatchet. The characters are likeable and it has a good plot. Unlike the earlier reviewer, who said they had everything to survive, they did have all the right gear, but they were not experienced outdoorsmen. They had a gun, but no ammo.(until later, and even at that they had only three bullets...) This story is realistic and enjoyable. I hope that someone wll make a movie out of it...If you are a survival/action/adventure book reader, or any book reader for that matter, I would read this book. Its educational, realistic, and a really enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Far North.......2006-06-09

Gabe Rogers and Raymond Province must depend on each other for their very survival. As much as they despise the idea they must rely on each other to live another day. Will the harsh weather defeat them? Or will the wildlife devour them first? Read Far North by Will Hobbs to find out. I would recommend this book to all thrill/ adventure readers.

The first reason I would recommend this book is for its never ending thrill ride. For Example when Gabe and Raymond on a plane over the harsh environment of Canada their pilot decides to land. But when they try to regain altitude the plane breaks. Another example is when they must find food without any weapons and to survive the cold nights with little clothing.

The second reason I would recommend this book is for its unpredicted suspense. Such as when they first set off to look for food but get chased by a pack of wolves. Another example is when they find a shotgun in the supply box in the back of the plane which they use to fend of the wildlife.

The last reason I would recommend this book is due to its very close relationship with reality. Such as when the author chooses to use 2 high school kids instead of body-builders. Another example is when the author uses fierce and very hungry animals instead of animals that want to have tee parties. Another example is when a plane that transports people over vast expanses of harsh and fierce habitats carries a gun for protection.

I would recommend this book to all people that enjoy adventure and don't hesitate to face a challenge. This book, like many others of Bill Hobbs, has action, adventure, and a realistic basis. This book will keep you up for hours on end. Not to mention the fact that it will not put you to sleep.

Nathan K.

4 out of 5 stars Good Story.......2006-05-13

I'm an avid reader, and I like survival stories a lot. Far North is a good example of one! The writer really creates the feel and emotions of the different stages that Gabe and Raymond, two high school students in the wilds of Canada's Northwestern Territories, go through in their epic journey for survival. Compared to similar stories (like Gary's Paulsen's books) Far North is somewhat predictable but has just enough twists and turns in the plot to make it interesting. The only reason I rated it 4 stars was because I expected MORE action (it did have some) and I could predict a few parts. Other than that, it was pretty good! If you're just looking for a book to read, I would recommend giving this one a shot.

Among the most persistent European myths about Africa, explain the editors of this anthology, is that homosexuality is "absent or incidental" in African societies. Since black Africans were felt to be the most primitive of people--the closest to nature--it followed that they must be the most heterosexual, their "sexual energies and outlets devoted exclusively to their 'natural' purpose: biological reproduction." That the field work of early anthropologists didn't always support this assumption merely led researchers to suppress their findings, or to fail to inquire too closely of subjects who were reluctant, in any case, to discuss their sexual lives with outsiders. The contributors to this volume argue convincingly that even native denials of homosexuality are often politically motivated (the sexual values of the West having permeated most of these cultures), and should be regarded as skeptically as the accounts of Western anthropologists, who in most cases have not seriously investigated same-sex patterns, "failing to report what they do observe, and discounting what they report." In the essays collected here, dating from the colonial period to the present and covering the major regions of black Africa, evidence of same-sex marriages, cross-dressing, role reversal, and premarital peer homosexuality challenges the myth and calls for further study. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Claims concerning the presence and status of homosexuality in historic African cultures have become central points of contention in debates among contemporary African Americans. Some of those involved in the debate have even asserted that the original languages of Africa contained no words for gay or lesbian, therefore concluding that they did not exist. As the first work of its kind on the subject, Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands answers an urgent need for accurate, well-researched, and balanced work on African sexuality. It offers perspectives from the fields of anthropology and history, along with extensive evidence from ethnographic and literary sources. The essays explore such topics as woman-woman marriages, early reports of Malagasy "berdaches," male homosexuality in contemporary West Africa, alternative gender identities among the Swahili, the regulation of sexuality in colonial Zimbabwe, and the portrayals of homosexuality in modern African literature. Bound to be an invaluable resource for discussions of traditional and contemporary African cultures, Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands is a book whose time has clearly come.

*~*

"Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities" is a wonderful resource for those interested in learning African homosexualities. I gave it four stars because there is little about Somali homosexuality but the book is perfect. It goes from coast to coast and all in between.

I didn't know much about African homosexuality before I bought this book. Now I'm familiar with my home continent's homosexual "tendecies." :-)

I bought a few copies for friends as gifts and they loved it. Some of them have told me it read more like novels than a cultural study, which it is. It is fascinating to the last note. Enjoy, darlings.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Book.......2000-04-28

Here is a book with oral histories and folklore tales from ethnographers that went to Africa. The book is an eyeopening one into the sexuality aspect of Africans often challenging theories of sexuality. It is an excellent book to answer to the question of How & Why Does Same Sex Sexual Behavior Varies Cross Culturally? It was writing an essay on this topic that got me to this book, I have always wanted to know about this issue since there has been a lot of denial from African colleagues but once I have read the first few pages of the book that 'denial' and "shh" feelings that exist within many Africans, was brought to light. The same smoothness and revelation is experienced throughout the book. The book seperates Africa into four regional sections to illustrate the diversity of African culture within that vast continent. It is very easy to read and simple too. If you are a book worm, you will love this one. It is the book for History, Anthropology or Gender Study students or those with interest in the above mention + Sexuality. The book now occupies a special place in my selective collection, get one too, I am sure there will be no regrets!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome geographical and historical range!.......1999-11-30

The first book to attempt to survey homosexualities across (sub-Saharan) Africa is also a very good one. At a time when certain East African leaders are trying to hold onto power by scapegoating homosexuality as "un-African," Murray and Roscoe show that there are and have been a wide range of roles in "traditional" African cultures for those who love persons of their own sex. Once this is established - and it is established beyond any reasonable doubt - most readers will probably be more interested in the parts of the book dealing with contemporary individuals (including a young Kikuyu's male's memoir, Amory's chapter on the changing conceptions on the Swahili coast, and an explanation of the view in Lesotho and elsewherre that two women cannot have "sex," so that their physical relations are not seen as "sexual").

The book concludes by looking at the "social construction" of homosexualities by cross-tabulating societies with a kind of homosexuality (with relationships structured by age, structured by gender, or more-or-less egalitarian ones) with other structures (e.g., of inheritance, postpartum taboos) in the same societies. No absolute, categorical patterns emerge. I.e., there are correlations, but no clear "if x, then homosexuality y" conclusions.

Andy is in a
world of trouble.

On the last day of a sea kayaking trip in southeast Alaska, fourteen-year-old Andy Galloway paddles away from his group to visit the nearby site where his archaeologist father died trying to solve the mystery of the first Americans. A sudden, violent storm blows Andy's kayak off course and washes him ashore on Admiralty Island, an immense wilderness known as the Fortress of the Bears. Struggling to survive, Andy encounters a dog running with wolves and then a man toting a stone-tipped spear. The wild man vanishes into the forest, but the dog reappears and leads Andy to a cave filled with Stone Age tools and weapons. Running for his life, Andy retreats deep into the cave, where danger, suspense, and discovery await.

Book Description

While the women's liberation movement produced dynamic changes in society's assumptions about girls' roles, little has changed about our attitude toward the role of boys. Yet the cycle of violence and oppression will not stop until boys are raised to become part of the struggle to end it.

Boys will Be Men is for all parents who have a vision of a society where peace and justice exist; for parents raising their sons in economically disadvantaged communities; for feminists who feel confused about raising their sons, and for parents of color who need to add their sons' strength to their communities.

5 out of 5 stars How to Raise an Excellent Son.......2006-11-01

I actually unexpectedly met one of Paul Kivel's [grown] sons after reading the book. He is a living testament to the teachings in this book. Obviously Kivel's ideas work as he did an excellent job raising his son who is intelligent, emotionally intelligent, compassionate, strong, socially aware, an activist, and a leader - no such nerd or wallflower as some other reviewers implied would happen if you raise your son according to the tenets in this book. His son cares about the people in this world, treats people with respect, and does what he can to make the world a better place. I would be wary of people who don't want to raise their sons in such a thoughtful manner.

1 out of 5 stars Please, Mr. Kivel, stay away from my son.......2005-10-15

I'm steering a middle course between the extremes represented
here.
I don't hold with the 'you have to fight to be a man' school,
but I'm certainly not on board with Kivel's "there are no inherent differences between boys and girls, only societally programmed differences." I managed to get through the book with difficulty; his obvious distaste for any school of thought which presupposes some behaviors as innately masculine stuck in my throat.
I was a boy, my son is a boy - he's not the way I was at his age, and that's fine by me. He likes to run and yell and make messes - but he also likes chess and math and playing the saxophone. I don't try to smother his behaviors based on whether or not they meet a predetermined template - either Iron John's or Mr. Kivel's. The curious thing is, Kivel is just as dogmatic about what constitutes 'acceptable' behavior as James Dobson - a comparison which would no doubt dismay both men.

5 out of 5 stars Ask yourself?.......2005-02-18

All of Kivel's review ratings are extremely high on Amazon except for the one's that deal directly with confronting socialized male behavoir. My fellow reviewers have not only expressed fears about their son getting beat up and not surving in a man's world, but have justified violence as biological. I think there is a symptom at work here and it isn't our genetic make up, but our society's complete inability to question male dominance and hold men accountable for their behavoir. Men choose to hit their wives and claim they had a bad day at work -why not hit your boss? Domestic and sexual violence are considered "women's issues" and yet the overwhelming majority of cases are caused by men. But even worse is that we don't take a look at why we do this, we defer the blame to someone else, justify it away, or claim that this is the only way to survive as men - and so we pass it on to our children for them to repeat our mistakes.

1 out of 5 stars Don't you love your son?.......2002-01-11

Don't you love your son? Don't you want him to be happy and successful? I beg you, please don't destroy his life by submitting him to the tripe espoused by Paul Kivel!

Allow me to explain what will happen to your little man should you proceed with this purchase and embrace the philosophies within. First, he's going to get beat up. A lot. After you explain to him that "violence doesn't solve anything" and you refuse to let him retaliate, he will grow confused and his grades will begin to suffer. (After all, violence solved the little dilemma about what to spend his lunch money on, didn't it?). Having already fallen out of favor with his classmates for being a sniveling coward, his teacher will now begin to harrass him about his classroom performance. And the poor little guy will have to go home to you telling him to quell every urge and instinct that he has as a male. He will feel afraid. Lost. Unaccepted and ostrasized at every turn. He will grow quiet and shy. He won't be able to use the restroom with the other boys watching. And he will retreat further and further within himself, which will cause him to get beat up more, which will cause his grades to suffer, which will invoke still more of your flawed philosphies about child-rearing........and the vicious circle continues.

At best, he will grow into a "geek" and be capable of interaction solely with computers. He will never have a date, a first kiss, a son of his own. His lack of social skills will relegate him to the janitorial profession. His life will pass without love or friendship or acceptance or understanding.

At worst, the term "loner" will be applied to him after yet another school tragedy.

Surely you'd want to avoid either of these scenarios, right?

If you are a single mother struggling with how to raise a boy, I am sympathetic to that. But instead of filling both your minds with senseless garbage about "equality" and "racism" and "homophobia", I suggest that you go out and get yourself a man. And I mean a real MAN. The kind that can kill a saber-toothed tiger with one blow from a stone axe. That's what the both of you need: a proper role model for your young son, and someone who can protect and provide for you.

However, if you ARE married, please march up to your husband right now and explain to him why you want to turn his strapping young man into a frightened, insecure loser.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding anti-violence resource for schools & parents.......2000-05-26

Paul Kivel has done it again with this excellent, pragmatic piece on how to challenge the forces that harm young men (and young women) in schools and families. As a professor of school and family counseling, I am always searching for pragmatic, effective, down-to-earth resources that will assist students, parents, counselors, teachers, and all others concerned about our youth. Kivel brings his substantial experience as an anti-oppression educator and activist from his work with the Oakland Men's Center into his latest work. Having seen him do his workshops live, knowing his unique abilities to affirm boys and men across all cultural identities, this work continues his excellent pragmatic scholarship in creating safe schools and families for all. Highly recommended and I have adopted it for use in my school counseling courses.

3 out of 5 stars Jackson's book.......2007-08-08

I'm not sure if this is the book that Jackson had or not, as this was published in 2004 and the book taken from Jackson's residence was collected in the 1993 raid. Unless this is just a new edition of the same old book. Jackson's version also has a different cover.

In any case, this is the inscription written by Michael Jackson in his copy of "Boys will be boys" (State's Exhibit #841):

"Look at the true spirit of happiness and joy in these boys faces, this is the spirit of Boyhood, A life I never had and will always dream of. This is the life I want for my children.- MJ" (page 9150 of trial transcripts, lines 25-28)

I think that says it all.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this beautiful book.......2005-05-13

Well, the previous reviewer is wrong because YES this book is one of the books that were presented by the D.A. in Jackson's trial. ONLY a TWISTED mind can see something wrong with this book. And the twisted mind is NOT MJ, but Sneddon... I just bought it and I loved it! Very good book, very inspirational. 5/5
BTW I believe Michael is Innocent of all charges.

2 out of 5 stars The book for the Michael Jackson Trial?.......2005-05-02

Are we sure this is the book they are refering to that they found at Neverland as presented as part of the Michael Jackson trial?

5 out of 5 stars lol.......2005-05-02

I'm inclined to believe that anyone who thinks this book is appealing to 'prurient interests' is speaking from their own issues. So children are supposed to be covered up in sacks - oh I know lets put all the children and women and anyone who might inspire aesthetic or sexual interest into purdah....My siblings and I wore a lot less during the summer of 1966 playing in the swimming hole and we were accompanied by adults that took joy in our joy.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Michael Jackson, bad!.......2005-05-01

Whatever you say Dennis McBride. Check out the cover, the kid is totally wearing daisy dukes. If thats not appealing to the prurient interests of underage children than what is??

Book Description

With the publication of Finding Fish, his memoir of a childhood spent in foster homes in and around Cleveland, Antwone Fisher shared with the world his story of perseverance, determination, and courage. And he also showed that within him beat the heart of an artist -- a major factor in his resilience and recovery.

Now with Who Will Cry for the Little Boy?, his first collection of poetry, Antwone Fisher reveals the inner truths that took him from a tumultuous childhood to the man he is today. The powerful poems presented here range from impressions and expressions of Antwone's years growing up to the love that he has gained from the family he made for himself as an adult.

From the title poem -- which is featured prominently in the movie Antwone Fisher -- a plaintive, haunting tribute to a childhood lost to abuse and neglect, to "Azure Indigo," the uplifting and touching poem about his daughters, many readers will find their own feelings and experiences reflected in this lyrical and passionate collection.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Would give it negative stars if I could.......2007-03-23

Although I love rhyming poetry, this book is overly simplistic. The poems are short, there are too few of them, and they are poorly written from a structural perspective. Elementary school children could write more complex poems. The biggest disappointment is that the title poem from the movie is excellent; however, there were no other outstanding poems. It is not worth buying this book new or used to read a "one trick pony."

4 out of 5 stars Rags to righes poet.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent acccompanyment to his autobiography. I think his autobio is really superb, it is one of the only ones that goes into sexual practice, a missing in most.

5 out of 5 stars Who Will Cry for the Little Boy?............2005-07-05

After watching Denzel Washington's film, "Antwone Fisher", and hearing 'Who Will Cry for the Little Boy' on the movie; I was deeply moved by the poem that I started looking on the internet for any of Antwone Fisher's published work(if there were any at the time). Surprisingly, there was and this was one of the books that I picked up. The book covers a wide range of emotional poetic works that anyone can definitely relate to. I have to admit, Antwone is one of the most talented writers that I've ever read in my time. I look forward to more of his thoughts, feelings and poems if he decides to continue writing.

Who Will Cry for the Little Boy is a must-read for anyone with a love of poems or not. This is really good stuff.

3 out of 5 stars good!.......2004-02-02

i thought this book was extremely touching and those of you who say he hasn't had any experience in poetry, well what do you expect? If you saw the movie you would know what I am talking about. His style of using simple words adds to the beauty and story behind his poems. Who said poetry has to be confusing?

4 out of 5 stars Treacherous Gold Rush.......2007-07-01

Jason's parents died when he was young, and he has been living for the past few years with his two older brothers, who both work in a sawmill near Seattle. Jason is only fifteen and too young to be hired by the mill, but he has earned his keep for years in other jobs, contributing to his small family. He is a restless sort, though, and doesn't want to get stuck in a dead-end job for his whole life. He decides to take off on his own for awhile, and he promises his brothers he'll be back in a year. Jason treks across the country, walking and stealing rides on trains to get from place to place. He is in New York selling newspapers on the street when he first reads a story of a new gold rush up in Alaska.

This gold rush seems like just the thing Jason needs in order to make enough money so he won't get stuck in a job he doesn't like, so he immediately makes plans to head back home and convince his brothers to pool their inheritance to send him to Alaska to strike it rich. By the time he gets home, though, his sensible brothers have also been struck with gold fever--they borrowed his share of the inheritance and set out to join the rush only a few days earlier.

Even though he has no money, Jason is convinced that he will be able to catch his brothers and join in their partnership before they get too far. But he is struck by bad luck almost every step of the way. Will he ever be able to find his brothers? Will all of the gold be gone before he gets there?

I thought Jason was a great character. He was realistic and sympathetic, and I enjoyed reading his story. I also liked the secondary characters and the way Jack London was inserted into Jason's story. I also liked what ended up happening when Jason finally met up with his brothers, and what they had done with the hand they were dealt.

1 out of 5 stars YO YO YO SUP.......2007-03-30

YO, YO, YO, SUP

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. First, I found it boring to read. I didn't understand why Jason would leave his home in search of gold. It was dangerous and he could have got hurt or killed. There was one part when bears attacked Jason and his dog. Jason's dog protected him and scared the bears away. It was a lot of action and I did like that part. I would try another book by this author, but with a little more action.

The begining is just OK because it is slowly paced, but speeds up after the first ten chapters. the middle is GREAT because of the page turning action and plot twists, and the end is full of happiness and rejoice.

5 out of 5 stars a no-putting-down page-turner adventure book.......2006-03-05

This book is about a boy named Jason Hawthorn who must beat all odds to get reunited with his brothers and possibly find gold. First of all, gold is the reason that everything in this book happened. Second, I think it is what drives the reader to turn the pages. I constantly found myself wondering if he was going to find any gold. What also makes this a page-turner is that Jason gets seperated from his brothers because they left a couple days earlier than him and I wanted to see if he finds them.
Overall, he hops a train to Seattle, stows away on a ship headed for Skagway, and makes the treacherous 500-mile walk to the gold fields. He will meet some friends, have even more hardships, and find out what it means to "be out in the sticks."

Will Hobbs has definitely hit the spot with me on this book. I think that's because I also like to explore and hike and because it is easy to visualize what is happening in this book.
Although, besides the explring and hiking part, I can't relate to this book very much. Jason did a lot of things I might not have done. I would have thought about them, but not done them.

I recommend this book to everyone, and especially people who like to be outdoors!
