5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-04-22

This book is another great in the series of A Baffled Parent's Guide. These books are thorough and complete - a coach's bible, especially a new coach. The book covers everything from basics of the game to working with the children and dealing with the parents. I highly recommend books from this series.

5 out of 5 stars good book for beginning coaches.......2002-06-23

I have yet to coach a girls' softball team, but I am really interested in doing it. This book has some great advice on how to handle beginner players and their parents. The thing about this book that I found great was that it told you some characteristics to look for when selecting a pitcher, something that I would not have had a clue about doing. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner or experienced coach.......2002-05-11

This is an AMAZING book! Even if you have never coached, played, or even heard of softball, it helps you out. It breaks every aspect of the game down and puts it in simple terms so you can explain it to your team. It gives you practice advice and schedules as well as drills you can use for team members to improve, or establish, softball skills. It also gives you advice on how to become the best coach, dealing with gender issues and how to handle difficult parents. This book is a MUST for EVERY coach!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coaching Book for New Coaches.......2001-04-28

I am not a parent but nonetheless, this book is excellent! This book gets right down to the heart of coaching. It tells you step by step how to teach someone how to throw, catch, pitch, hit and play every position. It also tells you what type of girl would be good for positions of pitchers and catchers which is important since most girls at this age have no experience in many positions. The drills have diagrams and there is glossary in the back to help with the terminology. There are not that many good softball coaching books (believe me I've looked), so grab this one!

5 out of 5 stars Toddler Fun!.......2007-09-13

My then 18 month old and I took "My First Art Class" at our local community center this past summer--it's a class created by the author's of the book. She had a great time with many of the activities and now that I'm back at work for the school year, I wanted to be able to continue her art experiences. This book is very easy to read, breaks down all the activities so you know how long it will take, if it's messy, etc. We made homemade playdough and have great plans for the other projects. Lots of neat ideas!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome resource!.......2007-08-29

I am a Stay at Home Mom who likes to keep her toddler busy and who hosts playgroup craft days. This books is WONDERFUL! It has so many good ideas that are actually usable for toddlers. I have read so many art books geared toward toddlers that more suited for preschoolers (this art book would be good for preschoolers too) but this book is great. My number one art resource!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2006-12-07

What an excellent idea for a book! I have only used 2 of the recipes in here, the feely goop and the stretchy dough. But, my 2 year old loved both of them. They were easy to make-with things I usually have around the house. Although, I have since begun buying things that are used in some of the other recipes in here. The stretchy dough is similar to playdough-I think it's better, myself. But, the author says kids won't eat it once they have one bite because it's SOOOO salty. My daughter, however, tried to eat it several times-and said yummy after her first bite. So, to each his/her own I guess. Nevertheless a great resource for parents of the toddlers and twos set.

5 out of 5 stars I think this book will help me find the true Zen of parenting.......2006-07-06

I love this book. I checked book after book of toddler crafts and toddler play out of the library, but most of them made me think, "hmm, anyone could have thought of that." This is not one of those books.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but this book is helping me be a better parent. There is nothing like the total absorption of an art project to help me be fully present with my daughter. Other times I might physically be with her, but my mind is at least partly elsewhere, thinking adult thoughts, worrying mostly, I suppose, but while doing these art projects, I truly am with her in the moment, and smiling and laughing more than I have in ages.

The author encourages the parent or teacher to present the art materials to the child and accept whatever way the child chooses to use them. That was a very helpful suggestion. It reminded me that there is no goal except exploration here.

The first project we did was finger- and sponge- painting. My daughter (19 months) made paintings, and I showed her that she could make prints of them by putting another piece of paper over them and pressing. I also provided her with some circular objects from around the house for printing on her art. Although it wasn't the goal, it's helping her learn her colors, and now she knows the shape "circle." The little paintings are also lovely, much freer and more asymmetric than I would do as an adult.

Yesterday, I was inspired for us to make "rubbery flubbery dough." It involves cooking salt and water on the stove and adding a cornstarch/water mixture, and then cooking some more. I didn't have enough salt, and I didn't have food coloring, either, but I had read the recipe for "feelie goop," made with jell-o, so I added a packet of sugar-free green jell-o for color and extra goopiness. Oh my gosh, the stuff was SO goopy, stretchy, sticky, green, funny, and fun. My 19-month-old daughter felt it, smeared it, stretched it, flung it, rubbed it on her dress, and wiped it on my back. (We did the whole project outside on a hot summer day so we could hose off after). My husband took a video of us, and I must say, I haven't seen a happier video of ME in a long time. Oh, my daughter liked it, too. We were so excited that we went to the discount store and bought 25 lbs of salt, a couple pounds of cornstarch, 25 lbs of flour, 4 big bottles of food coloring, and ran right home to make the "rubbery flubbery dough" properly, including coloring it and scenting it as the author suggests. I can't wait to pick my daughter up at preschool today to play with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for everyone who knows a toddler!.......2006-06-25

I love this book - it offers wonderful open-ended art experiences for young children. The art ideas are all developmentally appropriate and engaging for ones and twos. Every toddler classroom could use this as a guidebook. I have given it to teachers to help them begin the journey away from product oriented art to experiencial art.

Book Description

From the renowned infant psychiatrist and author of the classic Diary of a Baby comes the first book to address the unique psychological transformation that occurs in women when they become mothers.

According to Dr. Daniel Stern, pregnancy and motherhood can have an enormous psychologically transforming effect on women, who find themselves guided by new hopes fears, and priorities. Yet these dramatic and frequently overwhelming emotional transformations often go unexplored in favor of discussions of morning sickness, exhaustion, and the relative merits of nursing and bottle feeding.

Based on interviews with hundreds of women, The Birth of a Mother paints a wonderfully evocative portrait that gives voice to those unexpressed thoughts, feelings, and fears that accompany motherhood. The book is an invaluable sourcebook for new mothers, validating the often confusing emotions that accompany the development of their new identities, as well as a resource that helps prepare pregnant women for the life-changing journey they are about to begin.

5 out of 5 stars An important contribution to the literature about parenthood.......2005-03-07

"The Birth Of A Mother" is an important contribution to the literature about parenthood. How rare and wonderful that a book about mothering (and fathering) embraces the challenges of bonding with and raising a child with special needs. The authors help us consider how through the entwined mysteries of love and biology, an ordinary man and woman procreate a child. What is less obvious but no less profound is how a singular child gives birth to two parents. For at the moment of birth a woman becomes a mother, a man becomes a father, and two new fundamental identities begin to emerge. The heart of the book is the enchanting description of the psychological birth of the mother in the months that precede and follow the birth of her baby.

Through hundreds of interviews with new mothers and decades of clinical experience, the authors demonstrate conclusively how a woman's mental life changes fundamentally with the arrival of a baby. The striking change in perspective includes the shift from being a daughter to being a mother, becoming a part of the broad community of mothers, seeing one's husband become a father, forming a mother-father-child triangle, and an altered set of sensibilities that are brought to bear on every sight, sound, and smell of the new mother. In today's society, the new mother balances baby and career as she also finds a new role in her family of origin. A new era begins in the mother=s life as she counts time with a private calendar that is marked with her baby's age and developmental milestones.

Parents, clinicians, researchers, and academicians will all find lasting value here for their day-to-day lives. Uniquely in this volume, any reader can conceptualize the parents of children with special needs within the developmental spectrum of the parenting experience. In a broad sense, no child is perfect, and it is the bond that attaches the parent and the child that will sustain families over the long haul. How these passions develop has uniqueness and similarities for parents with children developing typically as well as those with special needs. In all cases, the infant cradled in the parent's arms is different to some degree, small or large, from the child fantasized in the mind, and the reconciliation of these images is central in the daily work of parenting.

Robert Naseef, Ph.D. is a nationally recognized psychologist specializing in families of children with special needs. He is the author of the highly regarded "Special Children, Challenged Parents: The Struggles and Rewards of Raising a Child With a Disability" (2001, Brookes Publishing). Special Children, Challenged Parents: The Struggles and Rewards of Raising a Child With a Disability

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!.......2004-11-01

If you have any doubts about buying this book, this review is written for you. I read this book in about 1 hour the first time and have read it about four more times since. I loved it! It's truly one of a kind and extremely enlightening. As a new mother, you are overwhelmed with so many thoughts and feelings and this book helps you feel normal and helps you understand yourself in a new way...as a mother!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2003-01-24

This book offers much valuable information about what goes on emotionally when your expecting a child, and once you've become a mom. It helps you to understand many of the "why's" about what you may be feeling or thinking. While most books offer information on pregnancy, labor and delivery, they leave a very important subject untouched...the psychological and emotional side of it all. This book is all about that and definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and Informative.......2001-01-10

Although written by a man, this book seems to grab the psychology of a pregnant woman quite successfully. The writer asks the accurate questions and enlightens the reader with the detailed and satisfactory answers. This is not a text book though, it is like a complete novel of the journey of becoming a mother. Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars A chef d'oeuvre..........1998-07-24

I bought the book today and I finished it. Sterns did a great job. They explained a highly complex developmental theory very simply for everyone who want to learn something on motherhood. I am psychologist who has been interested in their theory in a very sophisticated way for a very long time but I felt that I learned a lot while reading the book. Everyone should read this 'tour de force' to understand themselves, their mothers, their chilhood, their motherhood and also their 'fatherhood'. Congratulations Nadia and Dan !

Book Description

The book that applies Dr. Greenspan's developmental theories to a child's everyday life-with practical, delightful, deeply insightful observations and advice.

Every parent wants to raise a bright, happy, and moral child, but until Stanley Greenspan investigated the building blocks of cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development, no one could show parents how and when these qualities begin. In this book Dr. Greenspan, the internationally admired child psychiatrist, identifies the six key experiences that enable children to reach their full potential. In Building Healthy Minds, he draws upon discoveries made in his research and practice as he describes the many ways in which games, fantasy play, and conversations with and without words encourage this development. No one has looked so deeply into the very earliest stages of human development, and no other book makes such vital and effective information available to every parent.

5 out of 5 stars Huge Contributor To Our Parenting Success.......2007-06-14

This was the #1 most helpful book with our parenting. Agree with all the positive reviews.
As for the negatives, yes, it is intuitive to a certain extent, but how often have you questioned your own judgement? Is it always right? And what about people for whom 'obvious' parenting does not come naturally? Nice to get the affirmation on the behavior that does work!
Also, of course it's repetitive to a degree. By definition, growth is building so you'd have to re-establish the baseline definition of an early phase to adequately compare the later one.
Also, and perhaps most helpful about this book, there are hundreds of specific examples of how you can promote healthy growth for each stage and you do have to read thoroughly and carefully to get them. A table-of-contents review would be missing 2/3 of the most useful info in the book.
I hope you buy and enjoy as much as we did. It's been immensely helpful to us and we can't recommend it enough!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-10

Really interesting reading. It helped me with my 4-year-old development. I highly recommend it!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A lot of this advise seems intuitive.......2005-07-13

This book offers what seems like sound advise, however, for me, it all seemed intuitive. All the suggestions on how to interact with your baby, I was already doing. So there wasn't a lot to disagree with, but there wasn't a lot of eye opening info either. This may be better for parents who are dealing with a colicky infant or an infant who has trouble engaging with the world due to sensitivities. I didn't have these problems with my daughter. I would check this book out of the library versus adding it to my personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Another Terrific Book by Greenspan.......2005-01-23

I read this as a borrowed book and I agree with the majority of the previous reviewers as to its incredible value to parents. I completely disagree with the reviewer who recommended "The Continuum Project". That book describes a nice general theme but doesn't get into specifics. Greenspan's book is just the opposite...raising a caring child is truly more complex than just holding them 24/7.

My problem is that, as a teacher, while I am held solely responsible (see "No Child Left Behind") for a child's academic struggles...reality suggests we can only deal with that which families and/or society delivers to us...in short, we are not miracle workers or human laundry mats where children enter school one way and somehow come out "clean" on the other end. It's so much easier to attack education than it is to solve issues dealing with the family isn't it? As one researcher pointed out...we don't have a crisis in education...we have a crisis of the family...how true. In his books Greenspan clearly holds parenting responsible and, most importantly, recognizes (as most good teachers do) that a child with emotional deficits will hinder their academic gains...No Child Left Behind conveniently separates the logic from emotion as we have done for years...BUT, as Greenspan points out wonderfully...emotion always leads learning.

We each come at books, music, movies, and so on and define it by our own experiences. I come from the perspective of a parent and a teacher who sees the results of all types of home environments. From this experience I can honestly say that this book, along with many of Greenspan's other books, should be a must read for all parents and caregivers.

1 out of 5 stars Building Healthy Minds: The Six Experiences That Create Inte.......2001-04-13

Very disappointing. Whilst I agree with the underlying concepts, the book is repetitive and arduous. New chapters, with interesting headings, merely repeat what was said in previous ones. The contents page tells the story and time spent on reading the detail reveals little new information.

Whilst not disputing the author's experience, as a mother, my intuition will stand me in better stead than the instructions of a strange man. I recommend that other disappointed readers purchase Jean Liedloff's "The Continuum Concept". More concise, thought-provoking and stimulating.

Book Description

Driven by the desire to help her three-year-old daughter settle down into a peaceful night's sleep, Maureen Garth devised meditations that would help her daughter feel secure and cared for. Starbright is a collection of the stories Garth created as her child grew older. These innovative meditations are simple visualizations parents and teachers can read to their children to help them sleep, develop concentration, awaken creativity, and learn to quiet themselves.

"Unfortunately, a lot of children have trouble learning these techniques by the time they are seven or eight," writes Garth. "Relaxation and visualization, if taught at an earlier age, could enhance not only children's school work but other areas of their lives. Their concentration would improve; their artistic abilities would develop; they would feel more centered; their daydreaming could not only bring joy, but be constructive."

In her engaging, warm, and personal style, Garth teaches parents how to help their children relax, concentrate, and develop artistic and mental abilities, as well as enjoy a good night's sleep.

5 out of 5 stars a must for your spiritual child's collection.......2007-05-31

I purchased this book for my 9 year old daughter who was trying to make the transition back to school this past fall. She had become very anxious and I wanted a way to help her calm herself before she went to bed each night. Together we read the stories and she just loved them. She even brought the book to school to share with her teacher and fourth grade classmates, who loved it too. I really feel it has helped her! (Since then we have given even copies as birhtday gifts with handmade beaded bookmarks.) Overall, Big Hit!

4 out of 5 stars Child begs for reading nightly.......2007-02-02

Before obtaining Starbright, my 6 year old has asked about fires and bombs (school fire drills & TV news)before being tucked into bed. He now insists on being read about the gardens so he doesn't have bad dreams. In the morning, he relates more and more positive dreams.

I am relieved to have his fears reduced in a few short weeks. I think the "sequel" Moonbeam is next on our list. Thank you Ms. Garth.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all children.......2006-12-15

This book and the others by Maureen Garth have been a blessing in our home. My 6 and 8 year old love them. In fact, I'm not sure they can sleep without them anymore! They are quick to jump in bed and settle down so that they are able to find out what happens in their garden each night. Their imaginations are growing and they are relaxing. Both kids have a history of terrible nightmares and neither have mentioned a single bad dream since we begun these exercises. I'm growing in confidence, too! The other night, I actually made up my own garden story and it's been one of their favorite's so far!

For those of you who are concerned about compromising your faith with these books, don't be! On the contrary, the focus on light, growing your heart in love for all people and feeling safe with a guardian angel are all wonderful images and fall right in line with our Christian faith.

I love these books and I have even begun buying them for friends. What a great gift to give a child: the gift of peace, relaxation, imagination and a good night's sleep filled with pleasant dreams.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this!.......2006-11-10

I had no idea that my kids age 3 and 4 would love meditating this much I am very happy that I purchased this book along with two of her other meditation books. Moonbeam and Earthlight are also fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Written!.......2006-10-29

I was looking to relax my child before bed and found this to be the best one I found. Very relaxing, imaginative and well written. Gets my daughter set in a good dream mode.

I read this book with my first child and I would highly recommend it to anyone! It is valuable information, especially for a first pregnancy! I was armed with enough information to make informative decisions and have the natural birth that I wanted!

5 out of 5 stars fear, uncertainty and doubt .......2005-05-16

The cultural view of 'childbirth as a near death experience' in the U.S. is very real, so I thought I'd comment:

How to read a book: with a mind open to learn. with research abilities. with a desire to explore further when something presented swirls up strong FEELINGS within, the stronger the feelings -> the more is required of self to face an honest effort to discover truth.

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt: culturally, we have slaughtered the truth that pregnancy is a normal state and childbirth is a normal function of the mature female body. The best kept childbirth secret is that normalacy IS safest for mother and baby, as well as most satisfying....and that for the majority of mothers it really isn't difficult "to have it normal". Yes, there ARE deviances from normal, as well as actual complications, that may place a different spin on the nature of the experience of childbirth, and which may cause normalacy in childbirth to be more difficult or impossible to achieve safetly or with desire. How often does that occur ? Depends on who you ask ! There really is a difference between being delivered (and the support is for the medicalized experience) and giving birth (and the support is for keeping mother comfortable and confident).

Normalacy in childbirth is attainable, is protective and provides A Best Birth, A Safest Birth. To step forth with a bit of free-mind effort in the pursuit of discovery of why this is so~ there are questions such as: What IS normal ? Why is it protective ? What causes some women enjoyment of childbirth without drugs or surgery, while some scream asap (before labor !) for elective paraplegia (aka: epidural) or elective surgery (aka: just take it out) ? Why does the World Health Organization urge the U.S. to return to a midwife-based system of maternity care ?

A Good Birth, A Safe Birth, as well as Obstetric Myths VS. Research Realities and The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth (to name a couple) will provide assistance in gaining a meaningful education on the subject of birthing normally.

1 out of 5 stars Biased and Outdated Work by Unqualified Authors.......2003-06-13

The title requires some translation: by "a safe birth," the authors mean "safe from the interference of doctors and nurses," and by "the childbirth experience you want," they mean childbirth with a minimum of interference from doctors or nurses, which they claim is the way most women want it. If you already know that's what you want, this book may seem a bracing pep talk on how to talk back to the medical establishment. However, if you're either unsure how you feel or, worse, if you actually think you'd like some medicinal pain relief during what's widely agreed to be the most painful experience in most women's lives, this book is not for you. I'm not sure how they selected the women they surveyed on birth preferences, but considering that they quoted only about 1 woman who actually wanted drugs rather than having them forced upon her by evil doctors, I have my doubts about their selection methods. In my own experience, I have yet to come upon a woman who got the sort of athletic satisfaction out of the unmitigated pain of labor that seems so common among their interviewees. Most of the women I know seem to think pain hurts, and it'd be nice to have less of it.

The authors claim that interventions by doctors (all sorts of pain medications, inducing labor, episiotomy, and especially caesarean sections) only make childbirth more dangerous for both mother and baby. This seems highly dubious to me, because far more women and babies died during childbirth before these techniques were invented. They back up all their conclusions by citing scientific studies, but neither of them is a scientist, a doctor, a nurse, a public health specialist, an epidemiologist, or a midwife, so I doubt they really have the qualification to do the kind of scientific analysis of birth technologies that they claim to be doing, and I strongly suspect them of cherry-picking studies that support their ideological convictions and ignoring evidence to the contrary.

In addition, a book written in 1992 about childbirth choices is likely to be completely outdated for women giving birth in the age of Damaged Care, I mean Managed Care. To give you a hint of the problem, while the authors mention HMOs, they feel the need to define the term. The health care world has changed, and many of the options they describe may not be options any more.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2003-06-01

I'm pregnant with my first child, and this book did a very thorough job of explaining what to expect in the hospital, why they do the interventions they do, why these interventions might not necessarily lead to the most positive birth experience, etc. I feel more prepared now for what that might come my way during labor, thanks to this book. Anyone who claims that this book is 'unbiased', however, is sadly mistaken! The overwhelming tone of the book is 'hospitals and doctors are evil and must be destroyed'. I agree that the medical establishment intervenes too much in a natural process, but the bashing gets to be a bit much. Also, I found that much of the book's assertions are based on studies from the 1960's and 1970's...I'd like to see something a little more current. A lot can change in 30-40 years!! I still recommend the book, but I wouldn't make it the ONLY childbirth book that you pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Put this on top of your list.......2003-04-24

There are so many (too many) how-to books for pregnant moms to read, and each seems to have a bias, a slant, a message to sell. This is the book you need. I was a midwife in Berkeley for 15 years, and I always included A Good Birth, A Safe Birth on my recommended reading lists for clients. It doesn't preach. It gives straight, evidence-based information. Most of all, it helps women to know what questions to ask - and how to ask them so they'll be assured of straight answers.
Valuable information for everyone associated with childbearing, from moms to doulas to nurses to midwives - and darn, I sure wish a few obstetricians would climb out from behind their desks and read it, too!
Buy it, and buy another one for a pregnant friend.

"Every happy family is alike, and every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," wrote Leo Tolstoy. Families dealing with a child's homosexuality are certainly forced by a homophobic culture to experience a whole range of unhappiness. Beyond Acceptance deals with a variety of issues facing heterosexual parents of gay children, from facing what the neighbors will say to worrying about AIDS and social ostracism to feeling angry and guilt-ridden.

Various people speak about how they came to their misinformed views about gayness, their religious beliefs, their fears that friends will abandon them after finding out about their child's homosexuality, and their anxieties about AIDS. Often people find similar solutions to their problems, and sometimes different ones, but in all cases the message is that understanding, love, and a need to own up to, and dispense with, ignorant homophobic attitudes can bring families back together in a wholesome and nurturing manner. Frank, informed, and filled with insights and practical suggestions, Beyond Acceptance is a fine addition to the literature on homophobia and families. --Michael Bronski

Book Description

"Mom, Dad, I'm gay." When a parent hears these words, the initial shock is often followed by feelings ranging from anger and denial to fear and guilt. It's also the beginning of a difficult journey that, with understanding and emotional support, can lead to acceptance and beyond. Now fully revised and updated, Beyond Acceptance is a ground-breaking book that provides parents the comfort and knowledge they need to accept the gay children and build stronger family relationships. Based on the experiences of other parents, this book lets them know they are not alone and helps them through the emotional stages leading to reconciliation with their children.

5 out of 5 stars A most important book........2000-11-07

Beyond good, this book is important. A book from the voices of parents who have lesbian and/or gay children. We have "heard" plenty from lesbians and gays, pleading for understanding and acceptance, so this book gives the readers a voice from "the other" side.

With frank interviews and conversations, we are let in on the angst, the suffering, the fears and disappointments from parents. It covers many aspects of our lives. Most often, the burning question from parents is "what did I do wrong?" Religion, health, acceptance etc....all the way to "should the neighbours know?

This book is honestly written from the hearts of the writers, parents who have been through all of that and more. We learn of how they cope or didn't. The journeys they have taken and what the effects are with a lesbian/gay in the family unit. A must read, not just for parents, but also for lesbians and gays, and their siblings. And for everyone else too - I recommend this book. It creates understanding, not answers, through the conversations with various people. In all, it is almost like sitting in a crowd and listening in on an interesting discussion or conversation and gleaning knowledge and understanding!!

There is an earlier editon from 1990. Try to get the lastest one, I think 1996/7, with updates on issues like AIDS etc...

Buy or borrow this book, read it again and again. Pass it on. For everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book before you come out to your parents........2000-05-31

I told my parents I'm gay this past weekend. It went much better than expected. Friends said that there were books on the market that could help. I checked out Amazon's selection and found _Beyond Acceptance: Parents of Lesbians and Gays Talk About Their Experiences_ to be the extremely helpful in the coming-out-to-your-parents experience. The book was, for me, accurate in "predicting" my parents' reactions, down to the questions they would ask, the emotions they would go through, etc. It was touching, and inspiring as it brings you from the initial coming out event all the way through to parents who have taken action in their communities against homophobia. The book doesn't pretend that all parents will change so drastically, but it shows what's possible.

Note: While the book draws from the experiences of predominantly caucasian, middle-class families, the parents were from all across the country and from various religious backgrounds, i.e. Jewish, Christian, Catholic, agnostic, etc.

The book covers an amazing array of subjects including: Issues regarding your partner and the difficulties and triumphs in bringing partners into the family, the grandparents and extended family, the church, the sense of loss experienced by parents when their expectations for their gay child changes, the paradox of the general acceptance of married heterosexuals who don't have children versus gay committed, monogamous relationships, the fact gays can lead happy and full lives, gays in the military, about whether gayness is caused by nature or nurture or both, about whether being gay is a mental illness, about the removal of homosexuality from the APA's list of mental illnesses, about the failure of all forms of "treatment," and the list goes on . . .

I also enjoyed and drew wisdom from the Bernstein book, _Straight Parents, Gay Children: Inspiring Families to Live Honestly and With Greater Understanding_, but found _Beyond Acceptance_ to be better organized.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Coming Out Tool.......1999-09-11

This book is written as a resource for parents. I bought and read it before coming out to my parents. Insightful and careful writing to help you understand what your parents might feel when you tell them. Then give them a copy when you have the big discussion. The authors use loads of real-life examples from many different people and situations to help parents understand and relate.

5 out of 5 stars Great review of coming-out issues from a parent's perspectiv.......1997-08-19

This book is like having someone hold your hand as you accept the news that someone you love is gay. It is written by parents who share what were their reactions, questions and fears upon learning that their son or daughter is gay. Is is my fault? What will the neighbors think? What will my church think? The book presents parent's own answers to these questions and refers to current outside writing on the subjects addressed. It's "must read" for anyone trying to understand homosexuality, coming-out and how to best understand and love someone who is gay

Book Description

This monumental book traces the complex issues involved with the intergenerational transmission of competence and unveils some astonishing predictors found in the simple interactions between parents and their 1- and 2-year-old children. Meticulously recorded data, presented in detective-like style that grabs each and every reader, provide the scientific evidence underlying an alarming gap between the vocabularies of children from educated, advantaged families and children from families of low socioeconomic status -a gap that translates into widely different academic and intellectual performances as the children grow. As its many endorsers attest, this book is an absolute requisite for professionals in psychology, child and social development, speech and language, education, and early intervention, as well as critical reading for concerned families and the nation's policy makers.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Insight Into The Differences In Language In SES Homes.......2007-04-14

Here's some not-so-new news: Poor and rich families talk to their kids differently which may result in why the later group does better academically than the former.

Hart and Risley's book thoroughly investigates what is said in poverty, low SES, professional, and elite families over 10 years (both data compilation and analysis). Most interestingly is the nature of the TYPES of utterances said. The prevalence of directive (i.e. giving orders or chastizement over misbehaviors) dialogue increases as the SES of a family decreases. On the other hand, the prevalence of conversational (i.e. exploration, discussing about things, and problem solving dialogue) talk increases as the SES increases and decreases as SES decreases.

As an early childhood professional, I think it speaks volumes to experts in emergent literacy and parent education. Parents MUST talk to their children as intelligent adults would talk to them--not as babies or in a condescending way--if they are to promote optimal language, literacy, and communication proficiency for later life.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand research.......2007-02-22

I bought this book by mistake, as it was removed from the required textbook list for a class I registered for. In spite of not being needed for the class, I still read it. I enjoyed the level of detail and the identification of control measures for minimizing observer bias. The research and conclusions are very helpful to anyone who works in the early childhood development arena.

3 out of 5 stars too academic.......2006-07-28

This is an academic study, presented in a scholarly manner. While it is very good, it will only hold the interest of those who want to read scholarly jargon.

5 out of 5 stars Of critical importance to parents, policy makerers, and edu.......1998-04-05

Hart and Risley have created an easy to read volume that speaks readily to parents, policy makers and educators. This book is a must for anyone who truly wants to understand the relationship between the way we interact with children and the evolution of their intellectual development. If you are interested in poverty prevention, early literacy intervention or the impact of family based literacy on childrens' academic success, you will be inspired by the work of Hart Risley.

5 out of 5 stars Serious implications for early child intervention efforts.......1997-03-28

This book is one of the by-products of one of the most dedicated efforts to understand variances in the development of language. One of the reviewers of the book states that the work "...is a detective story of the most serious academic kind." Yet the book is written in a manner that would allow it to be required reading for "Parenting 102" if not "Parenting 101". The implications for parenting and public policy are profound

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing, my son reads the words in two languages.......2007-07-14

I got Doman's book when I attended a seminar on early childhood education in Jakarta, Indonesia. At that time, my son was 5 months old, and I was still wondering how the book would affect our life.
I taught my son when he was 6 months old, and kept teaching the words without any doubt. The most important is never ask your children any questions, let's say we would like to test him with the words.
Fyi, all the words were in Indonesian. Then we moved to U.S. 2 years ago, we began to learn all English words.
I bought Brand New Readers Blue Set (Brand New Readers), and I made flash cards for each word. I taught the words first, then I read the book for him. One month after, he could read 20 books by himself. He is 4 now, and he reads everything. He also likes Google Earth, to learn about Geography.
Thank you Doman. You have made our life so easy. It's so easy to teach him anything he wants to know because he can read.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't do this to your children.......2007-02-07

I was taught to read this way. It was very detrimental to my later emotional, social and even intellectual development. You are not giving your children an edge up by teaching them to read too early. I feel very strongly that this is a very bad idea.

Let them be children. Read to them, and if they pick it up early without flashcards, great, but if you just read to them enough they will become good readers when it's time. Please. Don't do this to your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Doman's Reading book and Math book turned my baby son to be a .......2006-05-12

I was so lucky to read this book and 4 other books by the same author when my baby son was 9-mon, I spent 5 nights to read Doman's 5 books, and started to teach my son with Doman's method immediately. I started with 25 words and add 5 new words every day, 1 second per word, 3 times a day. To my surprise, my son absorbed every thing so quickly and after 3 weeks, he started pointing to the right objects so often when I showed him the word! However, two months later, he lost the interest of reading cards completely. I had to stop the reading program for a while, and put words stickers on every object possible in the house plus using picture cards and posters.

When my son turned 18 months old, he can accurately name and read every part of the world map puzzle, he can read all other body and organ parts words and flower/tree parts words and other 1,000 words cards. When he is 21 months old, he can read dozens of children books. When my son was 25 months old, I am starting teaching him the elementary curriculum for 10 to 20 minutes every day.

I attended Dr. Doman's "How to multiply your baby's intelligence" baby brain development course in his "The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential" in Philadelphia in order to meet those experts and little geniuses in person. The Institute is for both well babies and brain injured babies, which was founded by Doman 50 years ago. It is a non-profit organization. [...]

We saw all those 4-6 year-old kids and other 8-12 year-olds in their Institutes could read more than 3 languages, read many big thick books, do Math, science and encyclopedia, gymnastics, swim, play violin in almost professional high level!!! They were taught by their parents who most of them did not have any foreign languages and musical background and etc. Everybody in the class was astonished, thrilled and speechless; many were cried in the very formal graduation ceremony.

My son is just an ordinary child, if you think he is a GENIUS, then every baby is a GENIUS including your baby, as stated in Doman's theory, because every baby is able to read and do math if you prepare such an environment and opportunity for him to learn. And babies love to learn, it is fun and it is their surviving skill...

You do not need a college degree to be able to send your child to college or even Harvard, the love with all your heart to your child makes the real difference when you decide not taking the chance of winning a baby Einstein lottery that might be related to your family Genius Gene. Every hard effort you put to your baby, God knows, and your child knows.

Do not waste your baby's precious first 6 genius years! I highly recommend this book!

It might be too overwhelmed to spend weeks to cut and write hundreds of words cards and math cards, you can buy a set of "Teach your baby to read within one year kit" for $9.99 on eBay. You can type the keyword "Teach Your Baby to Read within 1 Year Kit / Montessori" on eBay to search for the kit and the relevant subjects' material.

2 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as the review.......2005-09-29

I've read through this book although not the whole page and find it over-rated.

The REAL contents are really little and there's no useful info until Chapter 7. All it does is just tell you WHY it's important to start baby to read early(like i don't know that) and it is POSSIBLE(maybe back in 64", people didn't think it was possible..but hey, this is 2005, there's no point putting half of the book on justification now to convince modern parents). I think this have to be one of the most over-hyped books for decades!

It's not the whole book is crap. It DOES have it contents, but which is not too special and probably any child expert can give you a hint or too...and sometimes, common sense.

All in all, i'm not impressed. Definitely NOT a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Doman Success.......2005-08-19

I was born in 1964 and when the Doman system first came out, my parents went to work with it. I vividly recall the pleasure of sitting with my father, when he came home from work, reading the cards with the big red letters! By the age of two, he and I would split up the newspaper every evening and I would read the front section, while he went to the stock reports!

We got the morning newspaper delivered at home, so in the mornings, my father would drive me to daycare while I read him the front page of the paper in the car.

Upon entering kindergarten, my reading and math skills were already at or beyond 3rd Grade level. In 1st Grade, I entered our school spelling bee and finally was beaten by a girl in 7th Grade.

I have loved to read all my life, did well at school and at university and now, with teenage kids of my own (both of whom are avid readers!) I am pursuing a career as a writer.

Personally, Glenn Doman has been a hugely positive influence on two generations of our family already.

With regards to the application for brain-injured children, I have friends whose son was cerebrally palsied at birth. At an early age, they introduced him to the Glenn Doman system, and were highly successful. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 20, but only after having spent a lifetime reading avidly. The internet was his favorite stomping ground and his quality of life would have been greatly diminished had he not been able to read.

Would I personally recommend the Glenn Doman system? The answer can only be a resounding YES!
