Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when she developed carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain and concerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue and developed a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching in this way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionally overworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, her stretching program again relieved her pain.
The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger than steel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked at an uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) In people who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury. Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tense up and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up and become trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed on the affected body tissues.
Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit your needs. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or all three? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or if you're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalized stretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs to choose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way to do it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Great book - the stretches work!.......2007-04-25
I'd only be repeating the praises others have given this book, but I just want to say I highly recommend this book. The stretches are explained clearly and simply and they do work. I've bought this book for friends and when they follow the exercises, they get relief. Another plus, is doing the stretches FEELS so good and it only takes maybe 15 minutes.
Excellent set of stretches for large variety of carpal tunnel types.......2007-03-15
This book was loaned to me at my job as a computer engineer. I had carpal tunnel affecting my wrists & forarm. Excellent, easy stretches which really relieve the pain. I recommended it to a friend who cleans houses for a living, and she was able to stop wearing the arm brace. Great for those tiny, hard to stretch muscles.
Great self help book!.......2006-11-10
Excellent guide to conquering several medical pains/problems that most doctors would have to diagnose.
ESSENTIAL for me, but maybe not just this book..........2006-06-17
I have been experimenting with many strategies to get rid of carpal tunnel in my right hand, including learning how to write and do housework with my left hand. I do the exercises for both hands at the same time so that my left hand doesn't develop the same problem. With these exercises
and a hand brace when sleeping, pain at night went away. But if I forget to do the exercises on one day, I pay for it the next day through pain and decreased range of motion so I know they are essential. The carpal tunnel has not all gone away after several months of doing the exercises, however, just improved. Perhaps I need to do them more often. Be careful when you do them - she is not kidding when she says go GENTLY. More force is worse. The other thing that seems to be helping me is pilates.
A helpful book for anyone with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. .......2006-03-17
I ordered this book for my wife, who has had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in her right wrist for some time. It recently got worse after she fell off her bike and broke a couple of bones in the same wrist. The bones have healed, but the accident somehow increased the CTS symptoms: tingling sensations, numbness and a general increase in CTS aggravation. She has found this book, Conquering CTS, informative and helpful. After reading it and doing the excercises, for about a month now, she has found that not all the exercises suit her particular condition. So, she has, through trial and error, found which excercises in the book are helpful. They work, and help relieve the sypmtoms. So, I would recommend this book to anyone who has CTS. It is not a cure-all, in my wife's case, but it has made a difference. I would buy it, read it, try the exercises and find which ones work best for you.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Service.......2006-11-24
Dr. Pascarelli has done us all a great service by explaining the various mechanisms of
RSI. He has done it in a way that makes a great deal of sense to the layman and has
been very helpful to me personally. Kudos to Dr. Pascarelli for writing a book for the
patients and sufferers of RSI, and not another book that only doctors can understand.
An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book.......2004-09-26
In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage. Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc. You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic.

Book Description
There are more than 500,000 carpal tunnel surgeries done annually in the United States but approximately 30 percent of these patients will be no better as a result. The truth is, most physicians are too quick to consider surgery as the first line of defense against carpal tunnel and other repetitive-strain injuries. In this comprehensive guide to recognizing and treating these debilitating conditions, Dr. Scott Fried takes a strong position against surgery and offers self-healing alternatives that have better results. From understanding the signs and symptoms at an early stage to modifying work and lifestyle; from proven alternative therapies and helpful medications to nutrition and exercise, The Carpal Tunnel Helpbook provides authoritative advice and practical, up-to-date information to spare many patients the ordeal of surgery to treat their injuries.

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor (and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and related conditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these terms sound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.
Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss many of the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical and occupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting to living with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive.
This is also the RSI book if you're looking for information on the psychological ramifications of RSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office.

Every computer user has the potential for repetitive strain injury and should heed the advice in this book." Robert Dieterich, Managing Editor VDT News "Easy-to-read, expertly illustrated, and filled with hundreds of commonsense explanations and practical suggestions for those suffering from all types of repetitive strain injuries. Customer Reviews:
Buy this book if you are paining at work.......2007-01-10
This book is easy to read, has good illustrations, symptom descriptions, and suggestions for diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
good.......2003-07-26
I found this to be the best book as far as having pictures to show how to do stretches and on good typing technique.
Other books I would recommend are:
`The Repetitive Strain Handbook by Robert M Simon, MD and Ruth Aleskovsky'.
`The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies'
`Living Better Every Patient's Guide to Living with Illness by Carol j. Langenfeld'.
Good comprehensive introduction to RSI........2003-07-20
"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years.
Straightforward and helpful.......2002-08-08
This book is the single most useful collection of practical RSI information I've found. Highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out how to stop hurting themselves when they're working. I have bought four copies for friends.
Reader in Ohio.......2001-07-19
After years of extreme pain caused by ...poor working conditions ..., I ended up disabled. I found this book four years later. In that time, I had seen two M.D.'s, three chiropracters and two orthopedic surgeons. I was diagnosed as having a pinched nerve.
After reading this book, I made an appointment with Dr. Pascarelli. I was the last new patient he took before retiring.
He diagnosed me as having thoracic outlet syndrome, and wrote up a script of physical therapy treatment for me, which I took back to Ohio and showed to the doctor's here. I still live in constant pain because of permanent muscle damage in my upper back because this wasn't diagnosed sooner, but at least the pain is bearable. I also have problems using my arms and hands. But, today I'm partially disabled instead of totally disabled.
Maybe, if one of the doctor's that had examined me before had Dr. Pascarelli's knowledge, I wouldn't be living in pain today. Or, if I had the knowledge this book provides....
If you use a computer, read this book and follow the advice. You don't have to end up living in pain.

Book Description
This helpful guide tells how to prevent and treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in just fifteen minutes a day. This proven twelve-step routine of adjustments, stretches, and exercises can eliminate CTS pain without surgery. Illustrated and indexed.
Customer Reviews:
Pseudoscience, no data, even if well meaning.......2007-06-17
This book means well but is not based on sound medical principles. It criticizes other methods ("the failure rate for steroid injection is...about [sic] 75.6% of all patients"; "for surgery...the average failure rate, which is very conservative, is 57%...after 6 years the onset of these symptoms can [sic] reach higher than 90%". No references are given for these precision numbers, which are higher than typically quoted values.
In marked contrast, Ms. Montgomery cites no data whatsoever on the success rate of her own trademarked therapy. Instead, the book is well endowed with glowing anecdotal testimonials. She is described as a naturopathic doctor, and holistic health practitioner. She uses hair tissue analysis to evaluate nutrition. She is not a medically trained person.
From the very beginning, this book (like some others) conflates carpal tunnel syndrome with repetitive stress injury. In fact, the cause of carpal tunnel problems is varied, and not always from RSI. For example, the NIH Carpal Tunnel Factsheet on its website states: " Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. Other contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist that cause swelling, such as sprain or fracture; overactivity of the pituitary gland; hypothyroidism; rheumatoid arthritis; mechanical problems in the wrist joint; work stress; repeated use of vibrating hand tools; fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause; or the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal. In some cases no cause can be identified. There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome."
Check high-quality sources on the Internet, and evaluate the likely benefit of various treatments before proceeding with recommendations from a source of this kind.
This program works........2005-10-04
I do a lot of knitting and fibercrafts and had to take long breaks from it to recuperate, sometimes days. With these exercises my hands feel fine even after many hours of knitting.
A great resource for repetitive strain injuries.......2005-06-13
I am an Occupational Therapist who specializes in Hand Therapy. Kate` Montgomery's book is a very helpful resource for anyone suffering from repetitive strain injuries. This wholistic approach is a good blend of techniques from various health traditions. It is written in layman's terms with excellent illustrations that help you understand the cause of the pain and why you should follow the suggested program of stretches and massage. The self-massage techniques and exercises are especially helpful for those who need visual reminders of how to perform the various massage techniques and stretches. This book is a good supplement to treatment for those who are currently under the care of a health professional as well as those who are not in treatment. It is self-empowering for those willing to take responsibility for their health and follow the suggested 12 step corrective program on a daily basis. The sports balm is a helpful addition that promotes healing and relief of pain.
This book is a must if you have wrist problems.......2004-06-18
I've been playing drums for 10 years and using a computer intensively for the last 4 years for both study and work. About 12 months ago i decided i hadn't been practising drums enough and started to play again like i had before i started using computers - BOOM!!! Within 2 weeks i realised the occaissional pain i felt in my right wrist and hand after a long day on the computer wasn't the same as sore legs after going jogging. I've had semi-permanent pain in my right wrist and hand ever since and i've been extremely depressed and freaked out about it.
I stopped playing drums all together and started to use my left hand for essential computer mouse use (ie work only). I thought eventually my left hand would get problems and i'd have lost playing music and my career as a web designer.
Recently i discovered Kate Montgomery's book, and after reading it i feel there's hope i'll be able to heal myself by following her program. One day i'll be able to play drums again like i could before, and i'll still be able to use a computer to earn my living. Kate's book teaches you about how your arms, wrist and hands work, what causes wrist and hand pain, and how you can restore them after RSI related damage. The illustrations are excellent, and i feel confident i am doing the exercises correctly. Once i recover (i now believe i can) i will use Kate's preventative program to keep my wrists and hands healthy so i can play drums all my life. If you use your hands to earn your living and/or to do the things in your life that you love then Kate's book is a must. Kate is the Yoda of healthy hands!
Tired of Chronic Pain? This Book is a Must-Have!.......2003-05-09
As a flutist and music therapy major in college, I experienced chronic wrist pain because of countless hours of practicing several instruments, typing papers, and hauling equipment for music therapy sessions. I had been to see a physical therapist during school but was not satisfied with the answer: "Quit practicing." Last year, tired of the physical and mental strain of chronic pain, I tried Kate's book in order to take control of my pain. With daily practice of the exercises illustrated in this book, I was ecstatic with the results. I could not remember the last time my hand was free of pain! Since my livelihood depends on using my hands, knowing I could stay virtually pain free with daily exercises was a huge relief. The trigger point releases and self-massage techniques in this book, help me to release the daily tightness of muscles in my hand and feel great. The range of motion exercises and stretches are quick and easy to do throughout the day. Without this book, I would still be a victim of chronic pain. I have been more than pleased to find a way to strengthen my wrists and hands to prevent further damage and pain. If you are ready to take and active role in decreasing hand and wrist pain and preventing further problems, you will not regret purchasing this book.

Book Description
Release Your Pain presents ART (Active Release Techniques) as a new approach to addressing such common repetitive strain injuries as carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, knee and shoulder injuries, and back pain. Based on case studies, the book shows how ART locates and breaks down scar tissue and adhesions that cause pain, stiffness, weakness, numbness, and physical dysfunctions associated with repetitive strain injuries. Topics include how and why these injuries occur, which treatments to avoid when possible (including surgery), and how noninvasive methods succeed where others fail. Each chapter includes black and white photo sequences of therapy techniques and stretches.
Customer Reviews:
Not a manual but a brochure.......2007-09-16
I'm returning this book as this is more like a brochure advertising this special 'patented' technique. I understand you can't learn this type of thing from a book but still i would like to see the actual techniques in there. Its just advertising for this special 'patented' technique which i'm not going to waste anymore money on.
false advertising.......2007-04-04
I thought from the title of this book that it would be like a synopsis of how to do the ART technique. Instead, most of it was info about how wonderful ART is with some useful information about injuries in general. It does inform about specific anatomy but I didn't really need that part, although it was nice. I just wanted to know how to use the techniques, and I was a bit disappointed.
Excellent Resource.......2007-04-02
If you're interested in ART as a treatment- this is a wonderful resource. But, much more than that- it's a great resource for you to understand the cause of the problems. Also, any rehab exercises that you can do to prevent the problems.
Good overview of the technique.......2007-02-16
No, this isn't a manual of how to perform ART! That's many binders worth of material. This is to acquaint the patient with ART, how it can be applied, what to expect, and the common causes and effects of problems.
If you have chronic joint and muscle pain (I rehab old houses, so it's an occupational hazard for this middle aged man), it's well worth perusing. Just taking Ibuprofen for my plantar fasciitis (flat feet) was not an option, and ART has helped a great deal. This book helped explain the cause and treatment.
Marketing Rhetoric.......2006-05-27
This book is nothing more than a lengthy brochure written by chiropractors to promote the sale of continuing education seminars to other chiropractors. As one of the prior reviewers stated, there is NO INSTRUCTION on how to provide or perform an "ART" technique. The bulk of the book is simply a review of common repetitive strain injuries and treatment options which are common physical therapy techniques.
"ART" itself does not appear to be anything specifically special other than a type of manual technique designed to release adhesions in soft tissue, of which there are many. All that is presented here is a treatment technique that has been labeled as something specific so that is could be legally protected as a specific type of treatment, then marketed and sold to other chiropractors. Indeed, the foreward is written NOT by a neutral third party but by the actual chiropractor who markets and sells the technique via seminars. The actual authors are people that have taken his course, become instructors and have basically written a text to support the marketing of the continuing education classes. There appears to be no actual scientific studies that prove "ART" techniques are any more successful than other manual techniques. The only supporting evidence provided in the book is done through case studies. Other than the promotion of "ART" and how is it "superior" to other treatment options, the remaining information in the book is again, actually common physical therapy treatment techniques (which is the book's only redeeming quality). This book and others like it would like you to think that "ART" and other "patented" techniques are something new. Most, if not all of these type of treatments, are nothing more than modifications of existing tried and true techniques that have been renamed, repackaged and sold to newer generations of clinicians. Indeed, as some chiropractors are moving closer to mainstream medicine, they are incorporating techniques used commonly in physical medicine/physical therapy but most chiropractic schools/chiropractors would never admit this, so the end result is that existing techniques are given new names so that they can be marketed with a chiropractic twist from whomever is promoting it at the time.

Book Description
A proven recovery plan for the over 8 million sufferers of repetitive strain injury, and a guide for the prevention of future injuries.
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a painful, potentially disabling condition that most commonly stems from damage to the upper torso. Long-term misuse or overuse of everyday tools like computers and cash registers results in the painful hands, arms, and neck that are symptomatic of RSI, a condition whose incidence has increased 80 percent in this country since 1990.
The Repetitive Strain Injury Handbook is a unique, user-friendly guide that is broken into two parts: (1) the 8-step recovery plan and (2) an RSI prevention guide. The 8-step plan moves RSI sufferers beyond the common denial of this ailment and into a diagnosis and treatment plan with a doctor. It provides:
o Nutrition advice
o An exercise program
o Breathing tips
o Traditional and alternative pain management suggestions
o A holistic maintenance plan for long-term health
The second section is filled with suggestions, stories, and tips for RSI sufferers that will help them live pain-free at home, at work, and in their social and intimate lives. There is also a special section of information on women and RSI, since pregnancy, PMS, osteoporosis, mastectomy, and menopause can all aggravate this condition.

Best section available on "coping" strategy.......2000-12-23
If your repetitive strain situation has gotten to the point where you need primarily information on coping with the pain and inconvenience, possibly from surgery, this book has the best coverages of that aspect, among the 6 books I've read. The non-MD author appears to have written approximately 1/3 of the book from a non-technical viewpoint, describing the life experiences and ideas on coping, down to the most intimate issues. Easily worth the "price of admission" for any of the ideas you might pick up.

They go by many names--tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, forearm tendinitis--but these injuries all have a common origin: our work and play. Whether it's computer programming, carpentry, food service, or bookkeeping, many jobs today require people to hunch over into unnatural positions and then perform the same tiny movements over and over again throughout a workday. And the sports we pursue often aren't much better--tennis, golf, and racquetball all involve repeated elbow- and back-straining movements.
The solution, author Timothy Jameson says, is not to exclude any potential treatment: medication, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, or acupuncture. A problem like carpal tunnel syndrome could be rooted in multiple factors--occupation, weight, stress, disease (including diabetes), previous injuries--and, chances are, no one discipline can find and treat all of them. Jameson also recommends making dietary changes, shifting to a
Zone-type diet of 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat, mostly from unsaturated or polyunsaturated sources.
Repetitive Strain Injuries is about as user-friendly and complete a book as one can imagine. For example, early in the book, Jameson includes anatomical charts pinpointing areas of pain or abnormal sensations, and shows which chapters to turn to for information about them. Also helpful is the menu of alternative treatments, from chiropractic care to lesser-known movement techniques such as Feldenkrais, and biofeedback and guided imagery. --Lou Schuler
Customer Reviews:
No good.......1999-11-30
Since I got RSI myself, I've read a number of books on the subject, and of all I've read, this book was at the bottom of the barrel. I'm not saying it is completely without merits, but most of the good advice are available in all other books I've read. I do, however, fail to see advice about meditation and guided imagery as relevant to RSI.
Very good book.......1999-03-01
It's a great adjunct to my treatment with my chiropractor. My chiropractor told me that a lot of patients do better when they eat more protein. It wasn't until I happened to open to the page that discussed protein, carbohydrates and insulin (around p.122)that I understood why that is true. The book is helping me to learn more about taking better care of myself during my recovery.
I like the pictures that show me how to do the exercises properly.
The part that seems to need improvement is something like information on the Alexander Technique, and some of the other methods. But things that are familiar to chiropractor such as nutrition and chiropractic methods are excellent in this book.
It gives ideas on how to deal with this disability.......1999-03-01
You actually learn! It gives ideas on how to deal with the disability -- and the psychological part, too. It's a wonderful book!
Alternatives in RSI treatment.......1998-07-25
This book provides information on RSI that includes alternative treatments, in contrast to (or to complement, I should say) Pascarelli/Quilter's standard-med emphasis. The difficulty in treating RSI has prompted a great deal of interest in alternative therapies.
I think the real strength of what Dr. Tim has written is his emphasis on an interdisciplinary treatment approach. In contrast to consulting a single practitioner who may have limited perspective and treatment preferences, Dr. Tim advocates for a team effort that *includes* standard medical professionals but brings in other practices such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and others. Also, I think the book gives a decent basic rundown on the physiology of RSI, and includes good rehab information. While I consider some of the therapies presented here to be very questionable, at a minimum you will learn what each method claims to achieve for you from a writer who is not trying to sell one of them over! the other but hopes to draw something from each.
