An elementary teacher's best friend..........2004-01-22
This book is a teacher's dream come true. I am a fairly new teacher and don't have a lot of time to research all of the behavior issues that have come up in my classroom. Dr. Shore's book was recommended to me by another teacher in my school and I purchased it the next day. I immediately found several good suggestions for dealing with some behaviors that had been troubling me since the start of the year. Dr. Shore's suggestions are straightforward, practical and take into account both the teacher's and child's points of view and needs. Sometimes the advice seems obvious--as in "Why didn't I think of that?--but Dr. Shore's clear explanations helped me to better understand not only what strategies are more effective, but why. Best of all, the book is filled with a wide range of valuable information that is extremely easy to find and use. Every time I have opened the book, I have been able to find what I need in a matter of minutes. That's great news for a new teacher like myself. Thank you Dr. Shore!
Guaranteed to help you in the classroom........2004-01-02
I own Dr. Shore's other book, Special Kids Problem Solver, and found that really useful working with kids with academic, behavioral or medical problems so when I learned that Dr. Shore had a new book out about discipline I was eager to get it. I was not disappointed. It tackles about 70 different problems that every teacher will eventually have to deal with and gives very practical, very helpful strategies. For each problem there are maybe 8 to 10 suggestions and you can almost always find some strategy that applies to your situation. I've been teaching for 14 years and have found many strategies that are new to me. Whether you're a new or veteran teacher, get a hold of this book. It will save you lots of frustration and help give you the time to do what you were trained to do --teach.
Highly recommend this book!.......2003-12-03
EVERY teacher should have this book. This is the first book that I have found that gives practical methods to work with each unique child. Dr. Kenneth Shore covers just about every concern a teacher will encounter in the school setting. This book does not simply cover "problem" students but also gives advice on how to help students with other concerns such as low self-esteem, lack of friends and disorganization. As a special education teacher I have had the opportunity to help students overcome academic difficulties and now with this book I hope I can help them with other difficulties. I just wish I had this book when I first started teaching!!!!!
Very helpful and readable book on school discipline.......2003-11-04
I heard the author on the radio and he made sense, so I bought the book. I am really impressed with it. It takes about 60 different problems that all teachers face and offers many different approaches to dealing with them. The variety of approaches is important because everyone has their own preferences and style, and there are many good solutions to try. The layout makes the book very easy to use (the discipline problems are listed in an A to Z format), issues are explained in clear English, and the suggestions seem quite practical. A very useful book for teachers and others dealing with children.

big help.......2001-04-15
this book was very useful for giving me tips regarding how to stock a pond with fish and keep the water healthy and clean.
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures and accurate info.......2002-04-05
It's a good book if your not looking for specific info on a specific fish or invert. This book generalize a family of fish or inverts. It has very indepth info on equipment, but has no recommend setup. This book also include some nice ideas about ridding deritus.
Good Book for Those Planning to Have A Marine Aquarium.......2001-03-01
This book has the same contents as "The Questions & Answers Manual of the Marine Aquarium: Practical and Expert Advice on Keeping Fish and Invertebrates" by the same author but published by Salamander Books Limited (ISBN: 0-86101-861-3).
It covers a good introduction of the various gadgets (filters, protein skimmers, ozonizers, etc.) and explains the purpose of such devices. Tank set-up and care are also covered. Common fishes and invertebrates are covered, each in two or three pages with colorful, good quality photos of the creatures.
Q & A approach makes reading a breeze. Highly recommended for beginners
A Great Start.......2001-02-17
This book does a wonderful job of explaining all the basics of marine fish, and reef keeping. If you want to know what all the gagets are, and what they do, this is the book for you. It gives a good general description of all the equipment and how each item is used. It does not support any one tank set up method. It throws all the information out there and lets the reader sort it out for themselves. It's also a nice quick reference for fish/invert compatibility, tank, and feeding requirements. Great for the beginner!
accurate and informative text, a necessity........1999-09-14
this book has to be one of the most informative, accurate, and comprehensive book on BOTH corals and fish I could find. There were numerous occasions where we had opportunities to verify firsthand the advice contained herein, and much to our astonishment, the author was truly on point.
Good useful information for the novice and the buding expert.......1999-03-28
Easy to understand and utilize, sound information all presented in a clear and articulate manner. Those starting in the hobby will find this a useful tool before graduating to more complex reference books. Well presented photographs are also a added treat. The expert reef keeper however, maybe left wanting something a little more profound.

This Book is GREATTT!!!.......2007-04-20
I am now finishing my thesis about collaborative problem solving and the IDEAL Method is the central methodology behind it. This book has also improved my day to day problem solving, at the beginning it may sound like a waste of time; but the bottom line is: IT REALLY WORKS!!!! So I recommend this book to ANYONE who wishes to improve it's ability to solve problems, critically analyze arguments and improve it's memory
An IDEAL Approach.......2007-02-28
Over the years and the editions, the authors have honed their ideas into an exceptionally useful tool. The first section describes a clear and logical method for solving problems and for evaluating the results. The second part touches on applied logic and indicates a few of the major logical errors and pitfalls which some might encounter.
In all, this is a superb book on how to think about problem-solving, a book which provides a handy and continuing reference, one which can be referred to time after time.
It's a keeper which belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in solving problems.
The IDEAL book for Thinkers, Learners, and Problem Solvers.......2000-06-22
Certianly the best text I've read in years. The book is concise. A tool for all who manage, supervise, and simply want to be a more creative thinker

Anyone raised on Hints from Heloise who has an eye toward creative, homemade solutions to problems will love this book. The subtitle is "Substitutes, Shortcuts, and Ingenious Solutions For Making Life Easier" and that sums it up quite neatly! With hundreds and hundreds of ideas, diagrams, helpful advice, and economical solutions to everyday problems, any household would benefit by having this book at easy reach.
Customer Reviews:
This Book is Okay But It's a Little Dated!.......2005-10-17
I agree with the other reviewer about this book. We have this book too and some of the ideas are good, like some of the cleaning tips and cleaning remedies and some of the home remedies are okay but some of the ideas are a little weird, including some of the home remedies like some of the ideas for getting rid of hiccups are kind of weird and seem very far fetched and the book has some tacky ideas too like some of their ideas about making makeshift book cases and coffee tables using cement or glass blocks and a wood board are outdated and kind of tacky! Well anyway the book is an interesting read that has some good pratical advice and also has some ideas that are kind of strange and dated so the most I can give it is 3 stars.
a quick thinking quick solution bible.......2004-04-29
I really love this book and use it all the time. It has a great index and easy alphabetical look up for nearly everything you encounter in your household. It is filled with so many great ideas for using everyday things to solve simple household problems. I just wish there were more books like it!
Some good ideas, some strange ideas.......2000-06-21
This book has five main chapters: Problem solver's dictionary, which contains answers to problems. Charts & Checklists: to help things go smoothly. Alternative uses for common items. Recycling & renewing. Formulas & Recipes. The book is okay, but it seems more of an "Oh, I didn't know that" and less practical than it is made out to be.
Everything you need to know to save money or reuse Stuff.......2000-05-04
This is an easy-to-use guide for anyone who is looking for a quick reference on a variety of subjects. I am saving for a house and love books on saving money in unique ways and reusing what you have. For example: you will learn alternative easy to make coffee tables out of strawberry pots, or make bulk homemade brownie mix to store or give as gifts. This book has good and easy suggestions on decorating, crafts, nutrition, and practical advice on saving time and money. If you like the "Tightwad Gazzette" you will like this book. The advantage to this book over the Tightwad is it is quicker due to alphabetical order of the subjects and I think it has more suggestions!

Customer Reviews:
Informative and authoritative.......2000-11-19
This professional-looking hardcover is fairly small and not at all intimidating in appearance. Instead, the Reptile and Amphibian Problem Solver is a practical and readable reference for the beginner as well as an expert. A decent amount of space is allocated to selecting vivaria and substrates, creating an ambient atmosphere, and heating/lighting (although more information would be appreciated on the former, especially on the subject of keeping the vivarium cool, which is a constant challenge in the warmer climes). Reptile and amphibian care is listed separately. The entries are organized according to classification, similar species listed in a single group. Each entry is accompinied with brilliant photography, a Q&A section, and useful (although cluttered) rubrics concerning minimum vivarium dimensions, appropriate diets, temperature ranges, etc. Some entries also have breeding data rubrics. Common as well as fairly exotic species are covered (the book keeps an appropriately cautious tone when describing the exotics, which are likely to be captured in the wilderness and thus sometimes unsuitable for keeping). As an endorsement, I must say that after reading the Problem Solver I was confident enough to go and buy my first reptile.
exelent for reptile and amphibian keepers.......2000-06-06
I work in a large pet store and every day we have questions on reptiles and amphibians. Whenever I cannot answer the question, I go get this book from the shelf. Most of the time I find an answer in it. I find answers to almost Every question from "what should this animal eat" to "Help my animal is sick!" If you are a new reptile owner or just have questions, get this book.

new to horse care, or just a needed refresher.......2006-06-06
i have loved horses all my life, but watching TV doesnt give you anywhere NEAR the insight you need when actually owning, caring for, sometimes first-aiding horses.
this is a very good, easy to understand horse care, attitude, modest training book. this isnt how to break and make a world class horse, it is how to handle common problems that are almost universal in horses. i have learned so much by using this and other books, i have to recommend to ANYONE who hasnt owned a horse, or has but is only after many years getting back into it, to re-read this and other books like this. rather than state specific detail, just understand this book hits on some of the real everyday problems all horse owners will or have or are facing. it isnt an extremely indepth coeverage of each area, it is more of a " ok,, lets FIX the basic problem now, which will make it easier to get more advanced later" kind of book.
so in that sense, it is ideal. i do wish it was a little longer, or i would give it 5 stars, as there is a few minor areas ( or just ones i am interested in, like foals from newborn to a few months ) that i wanted more depth, BUT, if it covered everything, it would be 1500 pages long, and cost $300..
i recommend this book for anyone who really isnt a genuine expert in most areas of horse care.
Excellent help for first time horse owners........2000-05-01
I have browsed through another horse owner's book and I liked what I saw so I ordered this for myself. It has all the answers to questions that I, as a first time horse owner, have asked. I cant wait to read my own copy in depth. Some of the questions that were answered for me are how to know if my horse is sick, proper shoe care, and other health related issues that i feel are most important.

Excellent resource for Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Roses care and maintenance.
Solving flower garden problems organically.......2000-05-02
If you consider yourself an organic gardener, this book is for you. There are three main sections to the book. The first part lists specific plants and is divided into chapters for annuals, perennials, bulbs and roses. Each flower has the following information: description, ideal environments, propagation, general care, most common insect pests and most common diseases. This is the part of the book I've found most helpful when there's a problem with a plant. Just look up the plant and locate the problem signs and the book gives suggestions on how to solve the problem organically. The second section has three chapters; Insects, Diseases and Animal Pests. Here pests are described, and information is given as to most obvious symptoms, best control strategies, monitoring, preventing damage and plants affected. The last section is a chapter on gardening basics. There are two things I don't like about this book. As many pests affect more than one type of plant, there is a lot of repeated information. A much greater variety of plants could be included if, when listing the symptoms, the author referred you to the pest section for problem solving. The second is that it would be nice to have pictures instead of line drawings to make identification easier. Overall, I enjoy this book and refer to it frequently to solve garden problems.
