"Facing the Wolf" by Theresa Sheppard Alexander.......2000-08-21
This is probably one of the best books on Primal Type Therapy available today. While Arthur Janov's books reached a large number of interested readers, promising early "cure" for neurosis, he never explained the actual process of the therapy. As a result, a number of people who tried to go through it alone, were very confused. Some of them did well, but others (both patients and therapists) misunderstood the therapy and landed up in difficulties. Ms Sheppard Alexander's book is unique in that she describes the process, step by step in a way that the unsophisticated reader can understand, and the professional can find meaningful and helpful. I have personally passed this book on to several clinical psychologists and their response has been most enthusiastic. Lay people who I have shared it with have also found it moving and helpful to themselves. The writer describes her own childhood traumas in a way that anyone can understand and identify with. More importantly she talks about how, through the therapy, she was able to start working through these traumas, and transform her life from being a frightened, bewildered 20 year old, who dropped out of college, into the successful mature professional she is today. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in the 'deep feeling psychotherapies'. - Pat Torngren
A personal look at someone confronting their worst fears........1999-03-11
Its just a very good book. Its not just for those in pain. Thersa Alexander had a horrible childhood, and yet she came out alive and well, and has thrived as a thearpist and a person. I highly recommend this book.
A sensitive, inside view of deep feeling therapy........1999-03-03
Theresa Alexander documents her own Primal Therapy experience in a direct narrative form depicting her intital three week intensive. Chapters alternate between client point of view and therapist point of view. Insightful, poignant, and ultimately hopeful. I cried my way through the book, and sighed at the end.

Jamie.......2006-07-24
Though there have been quite a few books published on innate health and the Principles of Mind, Consciousness, and Thought, this is the first that I know of geared towards the youth and teen population. The author does a wonderful job of sharing these profound principles in a form that is easy for the average teen to digest. The language and metaphors/analogies used seem to be relevant and less forced than many books written for this specific population. In my practice as a therapist with teens, this book has played a key role in sparking insights leading to lasting change.
In addition, it has also opened doors for further exploration of this understanding by some of my colleagues not yet familiar with the principle-based understanding.
This book is a must read!
Excellent Book for Positive Youth Development.......2006-04-26
This book is an excellent tool to help teens realize their innate wisdom. It equips them with a strong sense of self and helps them resist negative peer pressure that is contrary to their "gut" instincts. It was particularly helpful to a one teen who has been in therapy. She realized that she has the innate ability to deal with life and that she is not defined by the past, but can use her innate mental health to be happy with herself. I have used the book in working with both youth and adults. Though written for teens, adults find the text both enlightening and liberating. I strongly recommend it for families and youth groups of all kind.

Book Description
Mandy and Tracey have never met, but they know everything about each other. Connected through a pen-pal ad, they exchange frequent letters, writing about boyfriends and siblings, music and friends. They trade stories about school and home. They confide their worries and hopes. It almost makes it easier, and more special, that they’ve never met—they can say whatever they want in the safety of their private world of letters.
But that private world may not be as safe as it seems. Can Mandy trust Tracey to be who she says she is? What secrets hide between the lines of their letters?
Customer Reviews:
Lousy Ending.......2007-07-01
Tracey placed an ad in a magazine for a pen pal. Mandy saw the ad and decided to start writing. The two girls, both in high school, begin writing to each other on a regular basis. Tracey writes about her boyfriend and her rich parents and the exciting places she goes on the weekends. Mandy writes about her family. She likes them except for her brother who is often violent and sometimes scary. She is not as rich as Tracey but has a pretty good life.
Then Mandy begins to see holes in Tracey's story, especially when she finds out that Tracey doesn't go to school where she said she did. Under pressure from Mandy to tell the truth, Tracey finally reveals that she isn't who she said she was. In fact, she is in a maximum security prison for girls under 18. When she turns 18 she will be transferred to a real prison for a couple more years. She doesn't want to talk about what she did to get into prison; she just wants to hear what things are like in the real world, on the outside. Mandy talks about what it is like to live a normal teenaged life, and she does her best to boost Tracey's spirits about her situation.
Tracey wants Mandy's life to be perfect, but Mandy is growing more and more worried about her brother. Will Tracey's friendship be able to help Mandy the way Mandy has helped Tracey?
I liked reading this story from two points of view, especially when the characters were going through such different things in their lives. I especially liked seeing what Tracey's life was like while in prison and the way she came to lean on Mandy to help her cope.
However, the ending of the book was horrible. There wasn't really any finality, leaving the reader to wonder about what happened. I also didn't like that there was no real difference in writing style between the two girls, so it was confusing at the beginning, trying to keep straight which was which.
Letters fromthe Inside.......2007-06-29
This really was a great book. It starts out with a girl named Mandy who starts writing to a girl named Tracy (it's in letter format) who seems the ideal life................ or does she?
Letters from the Inside has to be one of my favorite books by John Marsden, the onlt thing about it is, and I don't know if this is a bad thing or not, but it ends with such a cliffhanger it's terrible (not the book, the suspense) in the end you don't really know what happens.
What a waste of time.......2007-01-06
This book was totally not worth reading. It was basically a bunch of pages full of PenPal letters.
Good Read.......2005-10-20
I read 'Letters From The Inside' in French, French is not my first language so some parts I didn't fully understand, but the story is really great. For those of you who haven't read it, it's the story of 16 year olds Mandy and Tracey who start to write to one another after Tracey places an ad in a magazine. Their letters are at first quite normal but soon take on a more intimate quality. They get more then they expected when they each discover shocking truths about their new friend, but they also discover a real friendship. The book ends with an abrupt, emotionally charged ending that's sure to make this novel one you won't forget.
John Marsden has an undeniable talent for writing, and it shows in this novel. He captures the readers attention with his superbly written characters, the subject matter and his genuine, un-cliched way of approaching this unique topic. The ending is chilling, but it fits the book remarkably.
The Ending Is Like A Stealth Bomber Attack.......2005-08-26
I think some of today's best writing comes from the "young adult female" (i.e. teen girl) genre. I'll unabashedly say I read a half-dozen of these books a year, though I left membership in that demographic in the last decade.
Australian John Marsden's novel might stun post-teen readers with how good it is. Not a cliché in sight, the writing is not watered-down, and it's more intelligently plotted than most of what's published for "adults".
This is an epistolatory novel, set over one year. Read between the lines: that's where the true story lies. Things start when sixteen-year-old Mandy answers an ad placed by Tracey, another sixteen-year-old, seeking a pen-pal. At first letters between this pair are the expected mélange of teenage thoughts and goings-on, but rapidly we get the hint that matters aren't as idyllic in Tracey's life as Tracey leads on. No, this isn't another after-school special where one girl rescues another from abuse, drugs, or any other calamity accounting for most of the fare in teen stories. This is different. It does not slip the reins of realism for one second.
If you want to be surprised, stop here. Otherwise....
....I'll finish. See, Tracey is not truly living the idealistic life about which she first tells Mandy. Tracey's incarcerated for a violent crime that shames her. She faces a sentence that will keep her behind bars well into adult life. Mandy on the other hand comes from a middle-class background with married parents and a brother who .... is not well-adjusted. As the letters come and the story unfolds, we begin to understand that Mandy needs to tell Tracey her problems probably more than Tracey does Mandy. Though they've never met, this is a friendship with great meaning to each of the girls. Over the year, we really get inside their minds and feel for them. We want Tracey to have a second-chance and the future Mandy, free in the outside world, can have. And we want Mandy to never outgrow her friend who is far away and miserable with the circumstances her actions have put her in.
We want a lot of things to be different from how we learn they are.
Let me end by confessing that this book delivers one of the most emotionally-wrenching conclusions ever written. No, I don't exaggerate. I'll offer this advice: don't read Marsden's book if you think you might not be up to a suggestive ending that hits very, very hard. You're warned.

Book Description
Body image, visitors, children, animals, shopping, careers, parties, holidays—and yes, grumpy old men themselves—are all very much on the list of what today's mature woman finds a source of concern. From the series producer and stand-up comic Judith Holder, this book incorporates material from the new series "Grumpy Old Women," which features a diverse, colorful, and very grumpy group of celebrities, including Janet Street Porter, Jenny Eclair, Ann Widdecombe, Germaine Greer, Kathryn Flett, and Jilly Cooper. Written with wit, style and sympathy, the book is sure to be a source of both amusement and comfort to women everywhere—grumpy, old, or otherwise.
Customer Reviews:
Not For Export.......2007-08-12
Usually I'm a pushover for BBC comedies, especially the ones that are exported to the U.S. Grumpy Old Women hasn't made it over here yet, and I'm guessing that it won't. If this book, based on the TV show, is anything like the show, we aren't missing much.
I had high hopes for the book when I saw some of the women included: Annette Crosbie from One Foot in the Grave, Arabella Weir from Posh Nosh, and Germaine Greer were the ones I recognized. But their brief contributions didn't make up for the overall dreariness. These women really ARE grumpy. And they aren't very funny. There's a lot of complaining about how men never do any housework and how getting older is no fun. You've heard it all before.
In addition, this is a very British book. I thought that would be no problem for me, I've spent the past thirty years reading English books and watching British movies and TV shows, looking up the references I don't understand. Over time I've learned about Blue Peter, the Black & White Minstrels, the Magic Roundabout, The Bay City Rollers, Acker Bilk, Duncan Sandys, Terry Wogan, Richard & Judy and a host of others. But Grumpy Old Women left me stumped several times. The oddest may have been an entry in a list of how you know you're getting old: you buy a pleated skirt. That doesn't seem particularly grumpy to me, or old. Pleated skirts remind me of Catholic girls' schools. Maybe it's just a British thing.

Customer Reviews:
A delightful, entertaining collection.......2002-02-04
Richard Carlson's The Feelings And Imagination Of A Barefoot Boy Still Inside My Head! is a delightful, entertaining, and highly recommended collection of poems and short stories for children ages 9 to 12. The topics of these pieces range from family, falling in love, and imagination, to yelling, bicycles, and kissing. I Loved To Walk On My Bare Feet: When I was a young boy,/I loved life and felt great joy./I untied and my little shoes off I took./At my bare feet I wanted to look./It felt really neat,/Walking on the grass and soil in bare feet./I breathed in the spring air through my little nose,/And in the mud puddles, wiggled my little toes./I would play and daydream./Life was wonderful to me it did seem.
A cool Book.......2001-08-05
This was a book of poems and short stories. Mr. Carlson writes really good poems, I liked them all. Some of them were about Jeremy Grabowski's Crazy Summer In Stormville. I thought that was neat. Some were about life in Tucson Arizona. That was cool because I've never been there and it was fun to read about a different place. The short stories were all great. I liked all of them too. I think you will really like this book. Both boys and girls will.
Nathaniel
P.S. Kevin Carlson is Richard Carlson's brother. His pictures are terrific! People are really hard to draw, I know, I try to all the time! He does a really great job!
Imaginative! Very highly recommended.......2001-08-04
Author Richard W. Carlson Jr. Brings echoes of maturity to freshly imaginative short stories and poetry in THE FEELINGS AND IMAGINATION OF BAREFOOT BOY STILL INSIDE MY HEAD. The sparkling ingenuous voice of remembered youth sparkles, recapturing the best of childhood and strongest of memories in a startling original record certain to please young readers. The rhythm and rhyme keep the tempo steadily on high, recreating runaway frogs, black eyes, broccoli and walking barefoot with equal vividness. Accompanied by simple, yet skillfully drawn illustrations (by the author's younger brother), this marvelous lark comes highly recommended.
Read an online review of my book:.......2001-07-08
THE FEELINGS AND IMAGINATION OF A BAREFOOT BOY STILL INSIDE MY HEAD by Richard W. Carlson Jr. is just as the title suggests--feelings and imagination, as well as hopes, dreams, and just plain fun wrapped into one book!
His wonderful poems were a treat to read to my children, and the charming hand drawn illustrations caught and kept my children's attention as I read, bringing forth tons of questions about the picture.
Mentioning frogs, wishes, brothers, sisters, yelling, cheating, animals, first kisses, and black eyes, would only scratch the surface of all the comical poems and short stories within the books pages. All of Mr. Carlson's poems and short stories in THE FEELINGS AND IMAGINATION OF A BAREFOOT BOY STILL INSIDE MY HEAD will surely entertain and delight the children, as well as the parents. I know we loved it!
The author, Richard W. Carlson Jr. known to live in an imaginary world of his own as a boy, he now lives in the real world and successfully writes book and poems for children that teach valuable lessons. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.
Mr. Carlson's vivid imagination runs wild in each fascinating tale. The important lessons, both realistic and proper, are taught in a fun and attention-grabbing manner. They are exactly what the youth of today need, and what they will enjoy reading at the same time. His ability to tell it like a child is something that every child's book writer struggles for. The poems aren't too long, and drug out, nor are they preachy--perfect for the age of children it is intended for.
My favorite poem: I LOVED TO WALK ON MY BARE FEET is about a little boy who loves to look at his bare feet as he walks.
Find your favorite Richard W. Carlson Jr. poem today!
ASTORYWEAVER'S Book Reviews highly recommends THE FEELINGS AND IMAGINATION OF A BAREFOOT BOY STILL INSIDE MY HEAD by Richard W. Carlson Jr. for you and your children....
Poems and Short Stories from a Young Man's Perspective.......2001-06-19
Many books written for youngsters have a problem. To get the skill to create the work, the author has had to practice . . . and that meant getting older and further away from feelings of the young readers. Richard W. Carlson, Jr. has overcome that problem here in a powerful way, and brought me back in touch with experiences I haven't had in over 45 years. The interesting poems and short stories carry important lessons for the practical and moral development of the reader. The youthful perspective is perfectly captured in the poetic style that successfully mimics what a talented 10 year old might produce while having extra smoothness most of the time. I especially liked the illustrations by Mr. Kevin Carlson. Mr. Carlson has an ability to capture stories, emotions, and situations in simple illustrations that make the point of the stories clearer.
The poems and stories are very short, well-suited for the attention span of youthful readers. One interesting element is that the book contains both poetry about Richard W. Carlson, Jr. as well as fictional versions of the same incidents describing Jeremy Grabowski's Crazy Summer in Stormville. You and your children can enjoy talking about which versions you like better, and what roles fiction and nonfiction play in helping readers.
I generally liked the poems about discovery best. When we are young, everything that happens (even setbacks) is absolutely fascinating. Junk and joy go together just as well as gold and joy.
I also liked the way the short stories took the potential for fright and turned it into potential for fun. Mr. Carlson has an unusually positive attitude that anyone can learn from. Children need more encouragement than criticism, and he carries that point forward rather well.
I suspect that most readers will take even more delight upon rereading the book than upon first reading it. I hope you will take the opportunity to do both. Although written for children, the book has much of the appeal of Who Moved My Cheese? for adults.
"Who lives in your world that's wonderful and so much fun?
You might be the only one!"
Those two lines may be the best encouragement for budding writers that I have ever seen. Be sure you children have the chance to read them.
After you finish this delightful book, I suggest you think about why you no longer find discovery as fascinating as a little boy picking up his first horny toad. How can you recapture that delight and its benefits? How can you be sure that your children and grandchildren delight in discovery even more than you did at their age?
Retain the mind of the three year old . . . and your mind will be always filled with riches.
