Book Description

While there are many volumes that survey the burgeoning field of family therapy, FAMILY THERAPY SOURCEBOOK provides something different: a roadmap to both classic and state-of-the-art information on the foundational issues related to theory, research, and practice. More than a textbook or a summary of primary sources, this volume is a comprehensive guide to original source materials for the student or teacher of family therapy.
Bringing together a wealth of information previously unavailable in a single volume, the book covers the traditional family therapies and more. In each chapter, the authors present a selective annotated bibliography, define key concepts, highlight current research issues, and propose creative teaching strategies. By including helpful assignments and experiential activities for educators, the authors share their own valuable expertise gained from years of teaching.

    Book Description

"Edith M. Freeman's Substance Abuse Treatment is long overdue and warmly welcomed. . . . The book offers a refreshing examination of both life cycle and multicultural aspects of substance abuse treatment, all cast within the family systems framework. . . . This book should go a long way in guiding social workers and other professionals who are increasingly dealing with substance abusing clients toward integrating family and family systems into their practice with this population." --Bradley Googins in Social Work in Health Care "Attention to diversity issues enriches the variety of family structures, functions, and forms that are considered. Each chapter also contains helpful case examples and specific recommendations for practitioners. A person-in-environment approach is consistently maintained, and a strengths perspective is endorsed--a helpful antidote to the usual addiction material that emphasizes individual deficits and sanctions in the medical model. . . . The book would be valuable as a text in a course on family interventions or as a supplementary text in courses on practice and addictions." --Rita Rhodes in Families in Society Edith M. Freeman's pioneering effort utilizes a family systems perspective as a framework for understanding, treating, and preventing substance abuse. Without minimizing the importance of the biological, social, or psychological theoretical explanations of substance abuse, Substance Abuse Treatment explores the myriad variables that are needed to provide a richer explanation of any phenomenon pertaining to substance abuse. Such topics as treating substance abuse across the life span, multicultural approaches, and co-dependency are discussed in detail. Each chapter includes a case study or vignette that highlights individual and family life cycle issues relevant to substance abuse treatment. Written by an outstanding blend of practitioners and educators, this thoughtful, challenging, scholarly but practical collection of articles is a major contribution to the substance abuse and family therapy fields. "Freeman has assembled an impressive array of contributors in a volume that contains theory, practice, and research in family systems approaches to substance abuse. . . . The book includes practical information, suing a person-in-environment focus that is applicable to research and practice. It is a valuable addition for all who work with substance abuse problems." --The American Journal of Family Therapy

        Book Description

The author, a noted therapist and educator of therapists presents a jargon-free, practical guide to marital therapy. Broderick advises on how to remain fair to both sides, how to establish your status as a therapist even when the couple is working to subvert it, how to diagnose the couple's problems, and how to establish a therapeutic contract. He describes successful methods for changing behaviour, perspectives, or feelings. He also advises on perhaps the most painful step of all -- dissolving the therapeutic triangle.

          Book Description

The classic and critically acclaimed book Family Therapy with Ethnic Minorities, Second Edition has now been updated and revised to reflect the various demographic changes that have occurred in the lives of ethnic minority families and the implications of these changes for clinical practice.

Family Therapy with Ethnic Minorities provides advanced students and practitioners with the most up-to-date examination yet of the theory, models, and techniques relevant to ethnic minority family functioning and therapy. After an introductory discussion of principles to be considered in practice with ethnic minorities, the authors apply these principles to working with specific ethnic minority groups, namely African Americans, Latinos, Asian/Pacific Americans, and First Nations People. Distinctive cultural values of each ethnic group are explored as well as specific guidelines and suggestions on culturally significant family therapy strategies and skills.

          Key Features:

          • The revised text reflects advances in family therapy scholarship since the first edition thus ensuring for readers an up-to-date treatment of the topic
          • Accents and extends current critical constructionist theories and techniques and applies them within a culturally specific perspective
          • Pays special attention to the issues of â€~historical trauma’ (referred to as â€~soul wound’), especially in work with First Nations Peoples and African American families

          Praise for the First Edition:

"This well-organized and readable book deals with theoretical and practical issues in working with ethnic minority families in the U. S. . . . I am impressed by the author's ability to minimize the stereotyping involved largely through the richness of the clinical material. . . . This is a very interesting and informative work written by a family therapist with extensive experience in working with minority families."

              Book Description

Bring a Sensory Garden to life in a structured therapeutic horticulture program!

Intergenerational gardening programs bring the generations together. This book presents a tested, hands-on, easy-to-use activity plan that benefits the development of relationships between adults over 70 and school-age children. It shows how to limit frustration for both groups, how to plan activities that are functional and non-contrived, and how to assure that the interaction between elders and children is rewarding and pleasant for both. The activities rely on inexpensive, readily available tools and resources available throughout the growing season.

While other books have discussed designing a Sensory Garden for people with disabilities, Generations Gardening Together applies the Sensory Garden design to a specific population, with a focus on the human senses that are stimulated by the garden. This unique sourcebook shows you, step-by-step, how a Sensory Garden can come alive in a structured therapeutic horticulture program.

Generations Gardening Together shows how to create a Sensory Garden that will stimulate young and old gardeners alike. It outlines a six-week program curriculum that has been used and developed over ten years to use gardening as a program to bring generations together. You'll learn therapeutic techniques that benefit elders by promoting self-esteem, creating feelings of pride, competence, and satisfaction—both from creating a garden and through passing on their knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation, inspiring them to use both their long-term and short-term memory skills, increasing physical stimulation, and providing the comfort of familiar plants and their aromas, which can trigger memories of people, places, and vocations.

The activities in the book also benefit children through the establishment of a safe environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can come together—an ideal social situation in which youth can seek the wisdom of elders. Children learn important lessons about accountability, nurturing, and responsibility, for working in a garden teaches youth about life, death, hope, patience, and beauty.

Each activity session described in Generations Gardening Together includes the following information:

title—describes the content of the program

general statement of purpose—identifies the intent of the program

goal(s)—outlines the expected outcome(s) of the activity

program procedures—provides a detailed description of each step and the order of the program's activities

evaluation—includes what and how therapeutic program goals are to be measured and recorded

materials and equipment—identifies all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to facilitate the program activity This important resource shows how to provide appropriate (separate) orientation to seniors and children, what to emphasize and what to avoid in creating a program in your community, how to create garden themes that reflect the interests of the participants (ethnic foods, bird and butterfly gardens, planting to attract wildlife, etc.), how to decide what activities are appropriate for the developmental level of the participants, and much more. Generations Gardening Together is an essential resource for therapeutic recreation specialists, occupational therapists, therapeutic horticulture professionals, activity coordinators, master gardeners, and anyone working in an environment where elders and children come together.

Family studies scholars describe the use in therapy of techniques for the assessment of family characteristics and problems. Each author was given an outline to follow in order that a wide range of theoretical or therapeutic approaches would be coherently presented. Evidence for the validity of each assessment technique, suggestions for its practical administration and interpretation, illustrations by case example of its function and utility, and the actual questionnaire itself or instructions on how to get it are provided. The use of third party observers, and techniques for getting information from the family itself about marital relations or the full family structure are described.
