Customer Reviews:
great baby journal!.......2007-08-28
This is a great journal. So cute. I looked at and bought many of these and this is the best one. Not too much detail but enough..easy to write it. Pockets for keepsakes. Came with scrapbooking picture frames for photos. I can't say enough good things!!
This book is great!.......2007-08-27
I was looking for a baby book that would provide some versatility with what could be written. This book delivered. The pages had things like "some thoughts about before you were born" as opposed to "this is how I found out I was pregnant" - etc. It gives you a lot of room to write, but isn't overwhelming. It is cute, fun, and a great value for the price. Highly recommend!
Great overall baby journal.......2007-08-20
i was skeptical about buying this because of what i read from the reviews about it having bible versus and being a somewhat religious baby journal. i do not consider myself religious by any means and none of the versus or quotes bothered me at all. yeah it does say a few things about heaven and being gifts from god and such but its nothing too extreme. if you're a pessimist when it comes to religion then you might not approve. it had places for everything i had wanted to remember for my daughter, and overall i like it very much.super cute.
Very cute with great pages.......2007-08-13
I have enjoyed this book very much so far. There are all the "good" pages for baby memories and none of the frivilous ones, plus it goes out a few years.

Make a Difference During the Most Important Years of Your Child's Life
The months leading up to the birth of a child are filed with joy, dreams, plans—and a few worries. As a caring parent, you want to start your child out in life on the proper foundation. But where do you go for the answers to such questions as: How do I communicate with an infant who doesn't understand words? How can I effectively teach boundaries to my toddler? Should I ever spank my child?
Over the years, millions of parents just like you have come to trust
Jane Nelsen's classic Positive Discipline series. These books offer a commonsense approach to child-rearing that so often is lacking in today's world. In
Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, you'll learn how to use kind but firm support to raise a child who is both capable and confident. You'll find practical solutions and solid advice on how to:
·Encourage independence and exploration while providing appropriate boundaries
·Use non-punitive methods to instill valuable social skills and positive behavior inside and outside the home
·Recognize when your child is ready to master the challenges of sleeping, eating, and potty training, and how to avoid the power struggles that often come with those lessons
·Identify your child's temperament
·Understand what the latest research in brain development tells us about raising healthy children
·And much, much more!
Containing real-life examples of challenges other parents and caregivers have faced,
Positive Discipline: The First Three Years is the one book that no parent should be without.

Every parent should read this book!.......2007-07-15
This is one of my new favorite parenting books. The authors do a great job of teaching readers how to have a mutually respectful relationship with their children that promotes cooperation. They give great communication tips and reasonable suggestions to help parents talk to their kids. They help parents understand child development so they can avoid putting their children in situations they are not ready for which leads to melt downs. They promote consistency which is so important with children. I will be recommending this book to all the parents I see in my psychotherapy practice.

Great advice and examples for parents who don't want to use corporal punishment!
Insightful.......2007-05-07
A must read when you have a little child or take care of one or just want to know more about how to raise emotionally healthy and well-balanced children. Jane Nelsen is a phenominal insightful expert when it comes to parenting. I started giving this book to new parents as a gift as I have raised my own children by this method and the parenting job has been enjoyable throughout all years due to the positive discipline method. The book is an easy read and simple to follow. Although, the greatest benefit arises by actually applying these brilliant principles.
very good for little ones.......2006-11-13
great resource for small children, but would
recommend instead the book for preschoolers
which has more information and techniques for
toddlers.
Important topics did not jive with my child rearing ideology........2006-07-30
When I first began reading I found the stories to be unrealistic but thought that it may still be worth reading. For Example: The man who hits his child because the child said they had gone to a specific place only last night when they actually had gone days/weeks ago. His claim was that the child was a liar. Anyone who is interested in bringing up a well child would not behave that way and certainly a person like that is not interested in reading a book to improve their parenting skills. Anywho, I thought this book would give me creative ideas with discipline when the book is really about, as Tucson Toddler Mom said, common sense ideology.
I was most disappointed in their advocating "crying it out" (Yes, H. King they did advocate - check the "Sleeping Single" on pg. 130) and their bias against co-sleeping. They cite Alfred Adler as their co-sleeping "expert" who wrote junk psychoanalytical theories in early 1900s. In the section "sleeping with Parents" on pg 136 the writers write: "Some people believe children feel more loved and secure when they sleep in their parents' bed. Other experts believe children become demanding and dependent when they sleep with their parents......." Note the "other experts" as opposed to "some people" They are using the ole' "people in white lab coats" ploy to tilt you to their opinion on the subject. Shame on them! This is when I quit reading. They don't want you to hit your kids but it's ok to leave them crying and alone in another room for no good reason.
Of course, you probably now know that my husband and I are a co-sleeping, non hitting parents and IMO, babies were not intended to sleep alone. Otherwise the dingos would drag them away and eat them! More seriously though, I believe as some EXPERTS do: Co-sleeping has far more benefits than negatives and I don't believe that "crying it out" is ever an option. If you differ then this is the book for you ;)

Customer Reviews:
Practical and program-free!.......2007-05-25
This is a great book based mainly around real life observation of real kids and families. There's no parenting program that's being forced down your throat and White allows for many different parenting styles. Baby's life is broken down in stages and the chapters about those stages are superbly organized beginning with a description of the developments baby will experience, a description of what activities you can engage in to encourage healthy development, and suggestions of toys and other items that will stimulate baby. The best thing about the book is that it gives you so many options, and doesn't make you feel like a complete failure for not playing 24-7 Mozart while carrying your baby around in a sling and tending that organic garden full of healthy veggies.

Outstanding read for parents of children 0 - 4 even 5.......2007-01-15
This book focuses on the critical development of the first years of a child's life. Mr. White discusses child rearing, nurturing, even tasks that require little effort by the parent on helping their child's mind, vision, and learning grow.
I highly recommend this book for parents who are expecting or who have just had a child and consider what is presented are developmental improvements that will help your child forever!
Great Book!.......2006-06-15
White does repeat that all babies are different and it's perfectly ok if your baby doesn't have all checkpoints met at the time he says they will. I have found this to be true for my daughter. She is so advanced in some areas whereas some of her new abilities are in a future chapter, but the ones she hasn't mastered, within a week of getting past the section she was just in, she starts doing the things he said she would. Now, my baby is still just 3 1/2 months, but this book has been extremely helpful, because I am a mom who really wants to know what my child will be up to. I want to look out for all her milestones. White's timeframe may not be right on the money for a lot of people, but he knows what he's talking about, that's for sure.
Another Excellent Book by White.......2006-02-18
This is another must-have' book for parents from Burton White. It examines the first three years in stages and helps you figure out the best strategies needed to help your child develop into a wonderful kid. From birth to age three, you are dealing with extremely high levels of stress and change that will never occur again. It is well worth the money to purchase this book which can serve to help you understand what is happening with your child and give you concrete information on how to best facilitate proper development and - most importantly - to keep your sanity. I highly recommend this book to any mother who is about to have a child and to all families who currently have a child under 3 years old.

Book Description
Australopithecines, dinosaurs, trilobites--such fossils conjure up images of lost worlds filled with vanished organisms. But in the full history of life, ancient animals, even the trilobites, form only the half-billion-year tip of a nearly four-billion-year iceberg. Andrew Knoll explores the deep history of life from its origins on a young planet to the incredible Cambrian explosion, presenting a compelling new explanation for the emergence of biological novelty.
The very latest discoveries in paleontology--many of them made by the author and his students--are integrated with emerging insights from molecular biology and earth system science to forge a broad understanding of how the biological diversity that surrounds us came to be. Moving from Siberia to Namibia to the Bahamas, Knoll shows how life and environment have evolved together through Earth's history. Innovations in biology have helped shape our air and oceans, and, just as surely, environmental change has influenced the course of evolution, repeatedly closing off opportunities for some species while opening avenues for others.
Readers go into the field to confront fossils, enter the lab to discern the inner workings of cells, and alight on Mars to ask how our terrestrial experience can guide exploration for life beyond our planet. Along the way, Knoll brings us up-to-date on some of science's hottest questions, from the oldest fossils and claims of life beyond the Earth to the hypothesis of global glaciation and Knoll's own unifying concept of ''permissive ecology.''
In laying bare Earth's deepest biological roots, Life on a Young Planet helps us understand our own place in the universe--and our responsibility as stewards of a world four billion years in the making.
Customer Reviews:
Highly enlightening, balanced, clear, and thoughtful.......2007-09-08
Want to know about the earliest living things? Read this book. The writing style is direct but lively with appropriate allusions to popular culture. Some of the topics are highly controversial and Knoll does a great job of telling you the relevant facts so you can reach your own opinion. For this alone, I would give the book 10 stars if I could. Still I wish it had more illustrations and a better description of how research is conducted and how rocks are analyzed. Potential readers should be warned that Knoll assumes the reader is generally knowledgeable about Biology and scientific terminology.
Excellent introduction to early earth geology.......2007-03-18
Well written and complete. Could have used a glossery.
Tremendous fun.......2007-03-17
A lively account of the first three billion years of life, starting from the first chemical traces of biological activity and ending with the Cambrian explosion of fossil forms.
Knoll introduces each key geological period with an account of a visit to a site with relevant exposed strata, followed by a careful description of the geological and chemical analysis of the strata and the biological implications. This is particularly interesting for the oldest sites where geologists and biologists must work from limited chemical traces and faint shapes.
Knoll is willing to become fairly technical, especially in explaining the various interactions between biological processes and ocean chemistry and geology. But his explanations are well written and lively throughout.
Overall I found this tremendous fun to read, with a good balance between interesting anecdotes, detailed facts, and the broad evolutionary picture.
Evolutionary page-turner.......2007-03-16
This is a wonderfully well-written book that details the development of life from its earliest indications through the Cambrian radiation that set the pattern for the living things we know. Surprisingly, it is a compelling read, the sort of book that keeps you up late so you can find out how it ends. Makes you appreciate the miracle of life!
Life on a Planet.......2007-02-19
This is really a great book. Truly inter(trans) disciplinary, measured and still visionary.
If you read this and Lynn Margulis/Dorion Sagan What is Life? You cannot miss the awe around you nor real appreciation for your geneology--i.e. the microbes.

Book Description
In their first three years of life babies face the most complex learning endeavor they will ever undertake as human beings: They learn to talk. Now, as researchers make new forays into the mystery of the development of the human brain, authors Roberta Michnick Golinkoff and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, both developmental psychologists and language experts, offer parents a powerfully insightful guidebook to how infants--even while in the womb--begin to learn language. Along the way, the authors provide parents with the latest scientific findings, developmental milestones, and important advice on how to create the most effective learning environments for their children. This book takes readers on a fascinating, vitally important exploration of the dance between nature and nurture, and explains how parents can help their children learn more successfully.
"This is a great book. It's an important addition to any parent's library." --T. Berry Brazelton
Download Description
Did you know that a fetus can distinguish between similar sounds? Or that a four-month-old can recognize her name? The culmination of years of research, How Babies Talk explains exactly how babies learn language in their first three years of life. This accessible guide for parents outlines the milestones babies reach and how parents can help their babies reach them. It shows what they can do to facilitate the language learning process, how to use simple at-home tests to measure their child's progress, and what warning signs might indicate a problem. Few books have explored the incredible feat of learning language in such fascinating detail, and no other authors are as well qualified to explain it. A critical contribution to the literature of parenting and child development, How Babies Talk will serve as the premier language facilitator for generations to come.
Customer Reviews:
A big disappointment.......2006-05-11
As a new parent with an interest in linguistics, I was really looking forward to this, but I was disappointed to find it boring, repetitive, and sometimes sloppily written. Parents worried about a slow talker will be made more rather than less concerned, as this book almost never acknowledges how much different children vary in the timing of developmental milestones. Those interested in an overview of language acquisition will be disconcerted by the slap-dash summaries of important findings, which often feature startling logical lapses in their explanations (there is, though, an extensive bibliography--the one aspect of the book I find praiseworthy).
The babies in the condescendingly described made-up illustrations of experiments are almost all sterotypically white and middle class (judging from their names), monolingual, and cared-for-only-by-the-mother. Perhaps this disconnect from the lives of many readers is supposed to be compensated for by the numerous "try this at home" style "experiments," which are unrealistic bits of padding that repeat points from the text (which have often been repeated at least once already).
In all, a frustrating and condescending book that makes a fascinating subject less interesting. A better introduction is the relevant chapter in Lise Elliot's "What's Going On in There: How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life," a book that, much like this one, could have used some serious editing, but that is light-years better in its presentation of the material. William O'Grady's "How Children Learn Language" looks pretty good, but I haven't read it yet because it is so ridiculously expensive.
I have been waiting for this!.......2003-08-12
I looked and looked for a book like this. I just wanted to learn how a baby manages to learn language - and why my daughter's first ten words included such irrelevant words as 'duck' and 'buckle.'
The book does an excellent job at explaining just how scientists believe a child is learning at each stage. It also explains the experiments that they use and how the conclusions are reached - fascinating.
This is NOT a book to help you guage whether or not your child needs assistance. This is NOT a book to make your baby into a super-baby. This is a book that gives you clear insight into how his mind is developing. I would buy this book for anyone with a baby.
An outstanding and credible book.......2001-05-25
I found this book extraordinarily helpful in understanding and tracking my daugher's learning. I gained three valuable insights from this book: (1) a clearer understanding of how language acquisition occurs (2) specific examples of how I can assist my child with the language acquisition process (3) a valuable insight to how much my daughter can understand prior to her ability to communicate it.
This book brought additional enjoyment because after reading this book, I immediately noticed additional examples of my daughter's progression in language learning that I'd previously overlooked.
Additionally, the book contains a balanced mixture of research and specific examples. This combination makes it both credible and readable. I actually found it hard to put down, which is very impressive for a research based book!
I'd also highly recommend Baby Signs by Linda Acredolo
If you have a late talker not the book for you.......2000-06-10
My son is 16 months and this book was helpful in pointing out to me that he was saying things, I just was looking for better formed words and not listening very well (chalk it up to first time mom)!
However, the book states that the average age a baby talks is 12 months, but can go to 24 months. There was a study mentioned in their book that stated the average first word in the study was produced at 13.5 months.
I do not think this book is helpful for parents trying to find encouragement and answers as to why their child isn't talking. Most of the examples they give of first word talkers at 12 and 13 months. There is mention of a 17 month 1st word talker, but their reason was because he had ear infections.
I would have liked to read more examples of later talkers without any "ear infections" or disabilites being the case.
Help for the new parent.......2000-02-08
This book offers a parent some insight into the processes involved for a baby learning to speak. I have found myself rereading each age-related section as my son ages. More than anything, I think this book helped me to relax about my son's learning to talk; speech development is occuring even though it might not be verbalized at the moment. The references to the various research studies offered me some ideas about methods of communicating with my son without the aid of his speech. His glances, his reactions, all are methods of communicating with me, as long as I'm receptive enough to pay attention!

Information is not up to date.......2005-08-18
I expected good things from this book, since it came from a Montessouri publisher and was given to me by a parent I respect. However, the information is out of date. For instance, this book suggests beginning the process of weaning an infant from breastmilk at 3 months, starting with giving juice. The AAP and WHO both suggest breastfeeding for at least the first year (the WHO strongly encourages BF for the first two years) and no solids or other liquids (besides breastmilk or formula) before 6 months.
The writing in this book is awkward as well, and parental roles are gender stereotyped (one of my favorite sentences in the book is that the father introduces the baby to "mastering his world" - something a mother apparently cannot do).
I would suggest looking at Dr. Sears Baby Book instead to learn about the first years and infant development.
A wonderful book for anyone interested in infants.......2003-03-26
This is a truly wonderful book. Easy to read or skim, you won't be disappointed by Dr. Montanaro's exploration of the world of the infant, from the prespective of Montessori philosophy. This book would make an excellent gift for expectant parents!

What a disappointment!.......2002-08-23
I had such high hopes for this book, but found myself sorely disappointed. Yes, it's a quick read (as one of the other reviews noted) -- that's because there's hardly any information in it! It basically offers the information one could find in just about any issue of just about any mainstream baby or parenting magazine: that children's intelligence is a combination of nature and nurture and that to maximize your child's brain development you should offer them a loving, stimulating environment. ... I find it difficult to imagine that any parent motivated enough to buy this book doesn't already know all that. There seemed to be very little practical advice (certainly almost nothing beyond what one could glean from common sense and a cursory reading of a few elementary magazine articles).
In short, spend your money on something else. Maybe a book to read with your baby...
Great book for all new parents.......2002-02-20
This book is terrific! A very quick read (especially important for new parents!) and full of very valuable information. This book is great because of the clear cut advice and practical, specific suggestions for enriching your child's early development.
Many of the suggestions are simple and easy to do, but will make a big difference in the lives of your children. Written with a respect for children that is often lacking in the way people tend to treat young children. This book is not about pushing your child to get perfect test scores. It shows how raise a child that is happy and secure who will want to pursue knowledge and creativity on their own.
Great Starter Book.......2001-08-17
This book is a quick read and wonderful for getting started on learning how to help your child develop into the best person they can be.
This book deals with the first three years of your child's life. It gives you ideas from playing with your children to sending your child to music classes. It breaks down the types of learning and how best to incorporate all into your child's daily activity. It also helps to break down the activities that are best for you child at certain ages.
I definitely suggest this book for parents beginning guide to the development of a child's learning processes.
This is also a great book for the parent who says they do not have enough time to read anything regarding their new baby. It is a quick read and very educational.

Book Description
Parents are faced with hundreds of questions in their child's first years. Breast or bottle? Comfort a 6-month-old child now or let her cry? Allow some TV or none at all? But how meaningful can the answers be when they're offered by someone who doesn't know the parent or the child? Instead of offering answers that apply to "most" families, experienced child-care specialists Claire Lerner and Amy Dombro explain
1. How parents can understand their own parenting style and its effect on their child, 2. How parents can observe their child to understand what she is feeling and thinking, and 3. How to use those observations to make healthy and effective decisions.
With this easy, 3-step approach, parents can learn to become experts on their own child's healthy development.

Bringing Up Baby.......2005-09-13
As an early childhood teacher educator and new gramma I was very excited to find this down to earth but parent sensitive guide to the perplexities of raising babies. The book is very specific about what parents might see and then do with their child as a result of observation. A positive investigative attitude in parents is valued with developmental characteristics of children as the jumping off point. The reader can't miss the authors' respect for parents and their joy in the baby raising task. I'm glad my gandson's parents have this book as a resource to support them. I have to confess that I use some of the examples in my college classes too.
A different sort of child care book.......2005-08-01
Instead of telling how to take care of a baby in general, this book helps you figure out what will work best for the unique combination of you and your child.
The first section helps you take a look at yourself -- your hopes and fears for your child, your own childhood experiences, your personality or temperament, and your limitations. The second section focuses on your child -- how to understand his behavior, what his developmental stage is, and how to figure out what his personality is and what that indicates. The third section puts the two previous sections together and helps you "find your fit." Then the fourth section addresses making parenting decisions with your spouse, and how to resolve differences of approach.
The back of the book has a handy quick-reference chart, set up in columns of "When your child... (does a, b, or c)" "Your child might be saying... (a translation into adult-speak)" "What you can do." Then there is an appendix of common questions and answers.
This is a different way of looking at child-rearing: not by-the-book but recognizing that both you and your child are one of a kind.
Who You Are Is How You Parent.......2005-06-25
This book helps parents take a closer look at who they are and how their personal style and temperament influences the way they parent. The 3 step approach offered in this book helps parents increase self-awareness, gain a better understanding of the cues given by their child, and make parenting decisions that are responsive to the child. I found the authors' examples to be very helpful and often applicable to many different situations. The questions to the reader, offered in each section, tended to interrupt the flow of the book, but are great points of discussion for parents. Overall, this book approaches parenting with a true sense of respect, both for parents and children.
Well Written, Practical, Easy to Understand.......2005-03-22
As a preschool teacher, I am often asked by parents about what books I would recommend for them to read in regards to many different parenting issues. When I came across this book I immediately added it to my list of exceptional books for new parents. It is well written, parent friendly, and full of quality information about developmental issues that occur during a child's first few years. I even purchased a second copy to give to my daughter and her husband who just became parents for the first time. If you are looking for a clear, well written, easily understandable book...this is the one for you!
Thoughtful and insightful!.......2005-02-25
As an early childhood educator, I am always looking for new materials to help educate myself and the families I work with. I found this book to be very helpful because it offers a framework that parents (and other caregivers too) can use to help make wise, thoughtful, and developmentally appropriate descisions about caring for children.
It's very sound advice in an easy to read format.

Book Description
Generations after generations have been living and dying on this planet for millions and millions of years. These ancestors have built societies, created cultures, and produced technologies. Yet many questions still remain about our ancestry and what relevance, if any, these past cultures hold for us. Patterns in Prehistory takes an in-depth look at humankind's first three million years. From the origins of early hominids several million years ago to the evolution of the first great states and civilizations, this comprehensive survey of world prehistory also confronts important philosophical issues about the study of the past. The author reflects on the archaeological methods and theories of the 1960s and 70s while reviewing the methodological revisions of the 80s and 90s, relating the archaeological data from hundreds of sites to the great questions of prehistorical change. He focuses on the four great transformations in the history of our genus: the evolution of culture itself; the first appearance of us, Homo Sapiens; the evolution of agriculture; and the first appearances of cultural and social complexity in the form of the great civilizations of antiquity. Thoroughly revised and updated, this fourth edition incorporates the most recent archaeological discoveries and addresses the insights and limitations of the new wave of "post-processual" or "cognitive" archaeology. It incorporates the latest research, particularly the new discoveries in Mesoamerican sites, Peru, southwest Asia, and Egypt, as well as new scholarship and theories on the origins of complex societies. Wenke also places more emphasis on gender, race, ideology, and religion. Ideal for courses in world prehistory and archeology, this new edition has been shortened to be more accessible to students.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and Well-Written.......2002-06-09
I found myself listening to people whine and complain about the detail that Wenke goes into when discussing a topic. As compared to a textbook such as Fagan's 'People of The Earth', 'Patterns in Prehistory' certainly is rather long-winded in some regards. When cramming for a test, it might not be the best, yet I thouroughly enjoyed reading through it. It feels as though you are having a discussion with Mr. Wenke himself, not trudging through the required reading before a lecture. It's the kind of textbook you take with you to a comfortable chair and read leisurely, not one with which you come armed with highliter, expecting helpful 'test terms' and colorful pictures. I'm glad I was able to use this textbook as opposed to Fagan (which I've glanced over). I feel that I have come away with a much better understanding than those who failed to get past the small print and long chapters. And compared to other textbooks, it's a steal pricewise. Mr. Wenke is an excellent writer with an obvious passion for his field, I thank him for a solid read.
Good, but not great........2000-08-18
This is a suitable textbook for an introductory class on world prehistory. Comrehensive in scope, it goesd from australopithecus to the pre-contact in the New World. Wenke's writing is simple and straightforward, so even generalists with no archaeological background will be able to follow easily. The writing is even occasionally enlivened with Wenke's oft-present sardonic wit, although this falls flat a lot of the time. However, the sheer timespan covered by this text prevents it from going into any interesting detail, leaving the surface barely scratched. While easy to read, it's of less use, the further up one goes in the field of archaeology. It's also rather difficult to take notes from, and contains pages of daunting, unbroken texts. Some neat charts to break up the flow would help students. Perhaps because I have gone beyond this level now, I'm an arky snob, but I was less than impressed with this book.
