Massage is important for everyone but especially for infants. After looking at a number of books, I was happy to find this one as gift for new parents. Its many black and white photos make learning to massage a baby look easy and natural. The book is clearly written, helpful, and well researched. If I had a new baby, I would love to receive this book.

5 out of 5 stars massage book.......2007-03-25

The book was in excellent condition and was just what I was looking for. Thanks

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect..........2006-12-28

I really enjoyed using this book with my babies. The pictures were informative and explanations were simple enough. The only trouble I had was getting the book to stay open so that I could look at the examples while practicing on my baby. It would be much better in a spiral-bound form.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2006-06-08

After looking at nearly every massage book out there, I decided to buy this one and have not been disappointed with my choice. The main thing that clinched it for me was the fact that it is illustrated so well - every stroke has a photograph and a detailed description, making it so easy to follow. I found that many other books have line drawings rather than photos for many of the strokes. I also like the fact that there is not too much information. It is clear and concise - just what you need when you're holding the book open with one knee while attempting to massage a wriggly newborn!

My 2 month old daughter absolutely adores massage time, and has done since the day we brought her home. This book is my number one "must have" for all parents. Massaging your baby is a wonderful bonding experience, and one which can be continued into the toddler years.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video. (I'm very visual.).......2006-01-14

This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject. I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff. I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Massage: The Calming Power of Touch.......2002-10-18

This has been one of the best purchases I have made since the birth of my son nine months ago. It has taught me how to massage him in a way that has helped me gain his trust. Not only does it relax him before bed, but it gives us some precious bonding time that can't be matched! I sing his favorite song while I do it, and someday, when he can talk, I'm sure he will sing along. I have suggested this book to all of my 'Mom' friends, and I urge all Mom's (and Dad's) to buy this one!!

Book Description

This unique first book shows, through pictures and step-by-step instructions, how to give a baby or small child a full craniosacral treatment. The authors approach babies as conscious beings who endure enormous stress during the birth process. They show how CS therapy can help restore the correct alignments in babies' bodies, freeing them to grow and attain their maximum potential without hindrance. The book focuses on what a trained CS therapist can do to remove the blockages that often arise during birth. It addresses both hands-on techniques and awareness of how to interact with a baby and what responses and effects to expect. Based on the authors’ extensive experience, this guide can also be used by parents or caregivers interested in knowing what babies need in order to be whole and healthy, and how to prevent problems — including hyperactivity and ADD — that could become serious and require medication later in life.

5 out of 5 stars Add this book to your library!.......2007-09-23

This book is beautiful! The text, the pictures, the authors have captured the very essence of a craniosacral session. Their thoughts, intentions and flow of a session are easily followed but at the same time you feel as if you are watching such a private moment. Not very technical, assumes you already have that background and if you do you are completely in the moment with them. If you don't have a long background with CST, you'll still LOVE this book. It speaks to your mind, heart and soul about craniosacral therapy as it unfolds. Felt honored to read and now own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Craniosacral therapy.......2007-09-01

awesome pictures, wonderful words, encouraging for those of us who work with babies on a regular basis

5 out of 5 stars Excellent support for CST practitioners.......2007-04-01

This was an excellent support for my work with infants. It gives many practical suggestions and insights. The pictures are phenominal!!!

5 out of 5 stars Infants are conscious too?.......2007-03-06

This is just a really nice book, solidly in the tradition of, "YOUR INNER PHYSCIAN AND YOU".

It's written in a soft, intimate yet delightful one-on-one voice much like Viola Fryman, DO, or even better, a Children's Story book, and oozes with sensitivity.

I would recommend for anyone who has performed CranioSacral for Pediatrics, and especially, for any worried mothers in the USA or Abroad who don't know where else to turn for thier little ones.

It is refreshing to see an infant or toddler treated in the medical literature as something other than a piece of meat to be poked, prodded, and put away. Here, the little one is allowed to express as a conscious, sentient being.

(Parents of Autistic children rejoice!)

Etienne and Neeto Peirsman know what they are doing with infants in crises. This becomes very clear in their generous case histories, especially, "Where, Dear Soul, Do You Come From?" It's not always so easy as we grown ups may think.

If you're a CranioSacral fan and enjoyed the ease of reading Upledger's, "YOUR INNER PHYSICIAN AND YOU", you'll love this!

Well done.

3 out of 5 stars Heart In the Right Place.......2006-05-04

The intention of this book is nice. The content is just too much! The onesie is cute - for a few washings, and the print is so small - hard to read. I know the subject is important, I just think it could have been delivered in a much more concise manner. There is a newer book out there now by Suzanne P. Reese titled: Baby Massage - Soothing Strokes For Healthy Growth, and it's compact, easy-to-read and she gets right to the point without the need for so much text before you finally get to the strokes.....and Ms Reese's book has photos of real babies - not drawings. Much cuter and fun to look at!

This book and the onesie that comes with it are so helpful to me now that I have a 4 month old baby. I was pretty timid when it came to touching my new baby because she was premature but I learned how to use the techniques in the book . The shirt made everything so easy. I recommend this book to everyone with a baby!

    5 out of 5 stars Must-have Baby Book!.......2004-04-20

My sister gave this book to me after she saw it on the "Live with Regis and Kelly" show. My baby has colic and the book taught me some ways to help soothe her. The cute onesie has all the directions on the shirt so I could just follow the arrows to give my baby a massage. It was so easy and I have to say that it worked! I highly recommend this book and baby shirt to all moms.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful techniques for health-conscious parents.......2001-04-21

This book presents massage techniques for a variety of common childhood complaints (colic, teething, cough, and so forth) and I was amazed to find something so simple to be so effective! As a society, we tend to run to the medicine cabinet for every little thing that's not right, and our "experts" (and advertisers) reinforce that; but Ms. Mercati offers simple, easy-to-implement suggestions that seem to provide relief of common ailments (at least for my kids). The book is laid out well and information is easily accessible, with clear illustrations and well-written instructions. This would even make a nice baby shower present for a new mom.

A parent's loving touch is healing in and of itself, but this book makes yours more so.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Approach to Healing or Preventive Medicine.......2000-07-10

This is an informative book on Chinese massage therapy. It has massages that treat problems from abdominal pain to the common cold. Plus it has a general infant massage for a healthy baby. The reason why it earned 4 stars, instead of 5, is that it could have better drawings of the massage movements.

5 out of 5 stars This author understands how early infancy affects preschool success.......2007-09-14

I recommend this book for all new moms as well as anyone caring for infants. I have been a pediatric therapist for 30 years. Many babies who do not get adequate floor play with tummy time and belly crawling do not develop adequate tummy and back muscle strength. It can affect everything including learning ability, speech, and behavior. The techniques in the book are so logical and easy to follow. The title is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars short, easy read PACKED with great info.......2007-08-08

This book contains a lot of insight about infant development and easy to apply techiques for parents. A must read for those working in early intervention settings and new parents!

    3 out of 5 stars a little extreme.......2007-07-29

This book is a good example of a little too much knowledge causing extreme ideas. The author of this book is a physical therapist, and her extensive knowledge has clearly caused her to have some extreme ideas about child development. Her idea that babies should be held by a parent or loving caregiver, carried in a sling, or lying on their backs at all times until they are able to sit or move about on their own is overly idealistic. She also claims that using bouncy seats, booster seats, swings, or activity centers can cause developmental damage or delays for a baby. I wonder how much time she has spent with a 4-6 month old baby. My 5 month old daughter wants to practice sitting with help either from helping hands, a bumbo seat, or any other kind of help and would have a fit if she were not permitted to do so.
This book does offer some good ideas for enhancing playtime and what to expect at different developmental levels as far as play and motor development and for that, it was worth the money. Just take the rest of the ideas with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal shower gift; every new parent needs this book!!!.......2007-03-30

I give this book to everyone I know who is going to have a baby. It is easy to read and follow, and explains why you don't need all of the baby toys designed to entertain your 1-18 month old child. Besides using the ideas and techniques with my typically developing son, I also share it with the families whom I work with as a pediatric Occupational Therapist for special needs children. When infants are provided with the right environment and stimulated with the right activities, they develop the body awareness and sensory-motor skills foundation needed for learning throughout their lives. This book is key to our ability to get control of the growing numbers of children with learning disabilities, attention difficulties, and developmental delays. Our state (Idaho) is even bringing the author out to speak to the Department of Health and Welfare Infant-Toddler Program!
