fascinating.......2007-08-06
I loved this textbook. I read it for an Infant & Child Development class and found it interesting, clear and helpful. Anyone interested in childhood development should definitely read this book!
This is NOT the textbook!.......2007-03-10
This is a workbook that goes with the textbook, Infants and Children, by Berk, 5th Edition. It is NOT the actual textbook like it seems to be. No one mentions this and I ordered it thinking it was the textbook. It was not clear on the Amazon site, so just be aware!
A Diamond Second Bester...But By A Micro Eyelash.......2006-08-10
From my experience, no other book--at this time--can upend Gonzalez-Mena's INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND CAREGIVERS. In it's seventh edition, it stands as the most near perfect infant/toddler textbook ever created.
Now...Berk's book is probably the best "second-best" textbook that I have found.
She goes from history/theory to basic foundations to each era of children from birth to Age 11. The book is filled with color pictures and color charts along with plenty of special interest sidebar accounts on subjects like the negative side of extended infant child care.
So why is it the second best? It just doesn't cover infants and toddlers exclusively. Instead, it exists as a superbly written book on early childhood growth and development...which isn't such a bad thing.
Check it out if you either can't get Gonzalez-Mena's book or if you just want a second opinion on infant/toddler concepts.

Book Description
Current research increasingly highlights the role of early literacy in young children's development--and facilitates the growth of practices and policies that promote success among diverse learners. The Handbook of Early Literacy Research presents cutting-edge knowledge on all aspects of literacy learning in the early years. Volume 2 provides additional perspectives on important topics covered in Volume 1 and addresses critical new topics: the transition to school, the teacher-child relationship, sociodramatic play, vocabulary development, neural imaging work, Vygotskian theory, findings from international studies, and more.

Handbook of Early Literacy Research, V2.......2007-09-02
I received this product in great shape and in a very short amount of time.
Wonderful Reference Book.......2006-02-24
This book is an excellent reference, with up to date research results pertaining to the area of early literacy, by authors who are specialists in their field. While many research books are difficult to read unless you have the technical background to understand typical research jargon, this book is easy reading, with fascinating topics for those in the field of early childhood education. The topics are current, with a focus on what the burning issues are today. I have to admit, this is one of the best research books I have purchased in a long time. I would highly recommend this book.

Book Description
The author of this successful text shows that the most powerful disciplinary tool for young children is a caring relationship. Drawing on her experience as a psychologist, academic, consultant, and parent, Louise Porter offers a wealth of practical guidance that is effective, sensible, direct and always empathic to young children's needs.
Book Description
To abuse or neglect a child, to deprive the child of his or her own identity and ability to experience joy in life, is to commit soul murder. Soul murder is the perpetration of brutal or subtle acts against children that result in their emotional bondage to the abuser and, finally, in their psychic and spiritual annihilation. In this compelling, disturbing, and superbly readable book, Dr. Leonard Shengold, clinical professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, explores the devastating psychological effects of this trauma inflicted on a shocking number of children.
Drawing on a lifetime of clinical experience and wide-ranging reading in world literature, Dr. Shengold examines the ravages of soul murder in the adult lives of his patients as well as in the lives and works of such seminal writers as George Orwell, Dickens, Chekhov, and Kipling. One hopeful note in this saga of pain is that a terrible childhood can, if survived, be a source of strength, as Dr. Shengold finds in the cases of Dickens and Orwell.
Provocatively original in its approach to literature and psychology, unsettling in its vivid portrayal of the darker side of human nature, far-reaching in its conclusions, Soul Murder will stand alongside such works as Alice Miller's The Drama of the Gifted Child as one of the most important studies of the psyche to appear in decades.

Not for normal people.......2007-09-16
I gave up on this book. To me it is an intellectual exercise where 1 word is stretched to about 200 words. The author is very much anal (literal) focused and for some reason likes to write about rats. One story, which had nothing to do with anybody who was abused as a child, details how to kill a man by using a rat. Huh?
If you're like me and want to understand the inner healing necessary to get beyond the past then I don't think this book is helpful. If you want to know the inner nuances of Oedipus and Orwell, or need to discuss Freud for some reason then there is some secondary value.
I particularily did not like the fact that he took the book's name from an earlier child abuse book, which I thought was tremendously better written and more to the point.
So, while I consider the time I spent reading this book as wasted and worse, I am glad I got it in the used bin for $5.
Excellent insight into the damaging abuse process.......2004-10-27
This is a landmark book, many papers written based upon this book are now famous. For those well read in child abuse psychopathology, this book explains how and to what extent the damage is done to children of abuse.
The Title speaks volumes: Soul murder...what more can be said?
This is indispensible for therapists, parents of damaged children
and adult survivors of child abuse.
Caveat Emptor.......2001-11-06
Although deeply literate, thought provoking, and full of interesting and penetrating observations, formulations, and interpretations, I recommend this book only to those who already well-read in the area of childhood trauma.
My reason is that the book is imbued with a traditional Freudian understanding of the mind. A central statement of the author's view in this matter can be found on page 33, where Schengold refers to the "pathogenic power of fantasy." What a concept! The idea that one's imagination can make one sick! Such ideas have, in my opinion, no basis in fact and no place in a modern work on trauma.
Schengold certainly does not deny the pathogenic power of concrete childhood realities--in fact, that is his emphasis throughout the book and he has much of importance to say about it--but the Freudian taint could still, I think, mislead those who have not thoroughly thought through the issue. For this reason, I recommend this book only to those who are already well-read and well-thought in the area, and can therefore identify and disregard such notions; for such readers, the work is a stimulating gem. (I do not mean this to disparage Freud's contribution to the field of trauma, which was huge--see, especially, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, disregarding his notion of the Death Wish, for a brilliant anticipation of modern concepts of post-traumatic repetition--but other dimensions of Freud's undestanding are insupportable and should be discarded, including some contained in Schengold's book.)
Also, for persons looking for clear and unencumbered penetration into their problems, or for therapists working to devlop a clear and cohesive understanding of the impact of childhood trauma, I consider this work too literary and too abstruse, even aside from it's unsupportable Freudian overtones.
Books that I consider essential works on trauma include: those of Alice Miller (Banished Knowledge and others); J. Konrad Stettbacher (Making Sense of Suffering; don't be put off by the inelegant style, and pay close attention to his ideas on the the notion of a child learning to "fear his own needs"); Jenifer Freyd's Betrayal Trauma; Morton Schatzman's Soul Murder--out of print, but one of the great works in the history of psychology (libraries can get it--will certainly come back into print when the level of understanding about trauma increases among professionals). For a simple-to-read and popular-in-style paperback that nonetheless goes right to the heart of the matter read Susan Forward's Toxic Parents--"unsophisticated" yet profound.
Having read what I've written, I feel that I should reiterate that Schengold's work really has a great deal of penetration and value for some readers. I certainly was educated and stimulated by it.
a map of the badlands.......2000-05-10
I've read this book several times, and find it very useful to understand and to undo the effects of trauma. Shengold speaks to me personally as the one-time member of an abusive family, and professionally as a psychoanalyst who works with people who have been abused. This book is painful to read at times, and is probably better read in small sections at a time, so that it can be felt and digested.

New Mom.......2007-03-08
As a new parent, I have found this book helpful - especially since I haven't spent a lot of time around other children. It provides great suggestions on optimizing your child's development & helps parents have a sense of what is normal and what to expect during different phases. I like how it is written in a somewhat "text-book like" style and not anecdotally like many parenting books.
A Good Handbook.......2005-10-26
This book is good at summing up the different stages your child's development. Every age of your child's life has milestones and challenges. This book helps parents to keep things in perspective and helps reduce the stress of parenthood.
Ages and Stages.......2004-02-23
This is an average book. I personnaly don't think it worth the price. I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for development of your child, I suggest that you read Louise Bates Ames serie: Your one-year-old, Your Two-year-old, etc. even if it is a little bit outdated.
If you are lokking for discipline, then I recommend: Kid Cooperation: How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading and Get Kids to Cooperate. By far the best parenting book that I have read.

Great resource for what's "normal"!.......2001-08-22
This book is great for sorting through what's normal age appropriate behavior and what's not. It helped put my mind to ease! It's grouped into four stages; 0-18 months, 18-36 months, 36 months to 3 years, and 6-10 years. Under each stage are sections on Emotional Health, Cognitive Development, Family and Peer Pressure, Personal Growth and Character Formation. It gives tips on how to encourage development in the different areas, too, which I found helpful. It has a very "positive parenting" feel to it!
Book Description
Class does make a difference in the lives and futures of American children. Drawing on in-depth observations of black and white middle-class, working-class, and poor families, Unequal Childhoods explores this fact, offering a picture of childhood today. Here are the frenetic families managing their children's hectic schedules of "leisure" activities; and here are families with plenty of time but little economic security. Lareau shows how middle-class parents, whether black or white, engage in a process of "concerted cultivation" designed to draw out children's talents and skills, while working-class and poor families rely on "the accomplishment of natural growth," in which a child's development unfolds spontaneously--as long as basic comfort, food, and shelter are provided. Each of these approaches to childrearing brings its own benefits and its own drawbacks. In identifying and analyzing differences between the two, Lareau demonstrates the power, and limits, of social class in shaping the lives of America's children.

Unequal Childhoods Well Written and Well Researched .......2006-07-11
Everyone knows that socioeconomic status is related to academic success, but not many books have examined the lives of kids outside of school in detail to reveal how differences in social class are related to differences in use of language, organizing time, dealing with authorities, family disputes, and doing homework.
I'm a professor in a graduate school of education, and it was important to me that Lareau was a careful researcher as well as a clear and lively writer. She studied 12 families, each with a fourth-grade child. Half were white, half were black. Half were from low social positions, and half from relatively high social positions. Lareau found that the upper-middle class families deliberately stimlated their child's development and conveyed a sense of entitlement, whereas lower class families believed that kids matured "naturally" -- regardless of race. I found it so persuasive and well-written that I'm assigning it to my students.
"Unequal Childhoods".......2006-05-11
I read this book for a class about the achievement gap. I really liked how this book examined the achievement gap from a socioeconomic point of view. Lareau's case studies of families from varying races and social classes made her research easy to read and interesting. Her analysis of two different parenting styles-concerted cultivation and theory of natural growth-points out the implications each style has on children's performance in school, their interactions with adults, and later success in searching for jobs/careers. This was a great read for school or just for fun.
A great look at parenting differences across different economic backgrounds.......2006-04-21
I was asked to read this for a class assignment and was delightfully surprised at what a great book it was! The different case studies about different families were very insightful into different types of parenting as well as how parenting and economics may impact children's achievement both in school and in extracurricular activities. A good read for those in the education field or for a parent interested in seeing how other families deal with the busy schedules of their children and how that may impact their family life.
engrossing discussion of class-based childrearing habits.......2006-04-14
The book is worth reading for its fascinating case studies and for the very convincing discussion of the two very different types of childrearing habits: "concerted cultivation" for the middle and upper middle class and "natural growth" for working class and poor.
I am not convinced that the middle class "concerted cultivation" childrearing habits provide the benefits that the author suggests. "Concerted cultivation" is pretty new so there is no real evidence that a "concerted cultivation" childhood will benefit someone independent of socioeconomic status and genetics.
It is still a five-star book. It ties together things about modern middle class childhood that I wouldn't have thought to be related at all.

Book Description
Authoritative yet accessible, Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the newest evidence about early brain development and how children learn to speak, think, get along with others, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the surrounding context-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.
Are the early years a time of vulnerability or resilience? To what extent are our future prospects constrained by how well we navigate them? How can we get all children off to a good start in life? When should we worry? The committee provides a framework for approaching such vital questions and explores how scientists know what they know about childhood development.
This timely release will be important to all those who care about children and their families: policy makers, educators, researchers, program administrators, advocates, journalists, caregivers, and parents.

I received the book in in a timely fashion, and the book is in great condition.
super terrific.......2006-10-24
This book is a staple in the early childhood mental health field. It represents everything good in the promotion of social-emotional development in our society. Creating neurobiologically friendly environments for young children is a crossroad our society faces in an effort to have a positive impact on the mental health for our time. Implications for risk and resilience research contributions are included.
Review of From Neurons to Neighbourhoods........2006-08-04
I purchased this book, because I am doing a Graduate Diploma in Maternal & Child Health in Australia. Many of our lecturers were taking quotes from this book and referring to Jack Schonkoff's remarks contained within, pertaining to new evidence on myelination and the importance of interaction and stimulation of small children and the relationship between this and brain growth. It is easy to read and I am confident that both the lay person and health professional alike will glean valuable insight. I find myself constantly referring to this book and know that this will have an effect on my future practice as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse.
Great resource!.......2006-03-27
An amazing breadth and depth of neuroscience and its implications for how we treat children. Must reading for anyone wishing to get beyond prejudice and rhetoric to the core of what needs to be done in public policy to protect and preserve childhood in modern America. Should be 5 stars, but now a little dated, although references are excellent and it's not hard to follow the themes into the most recent research.

It takes guts to write a book like this..........2007-05-31
Can't imagine what the negative reviewers are talking about. This is a brilliant book - as brilliant as all of Dave's. The writing is vivid, fascinating, excrutiating. Bravo to Richard for having the guts to be completely honest about his feelings for Dave at the beginning of the book, and his total honesty about what happened to him when David left. There has to be a special place in Hell for all the "do-gooders" who returned him to the monster called "Mother." Although I hated her, I felt more revulsion for the system (or lack of one) for failing all of the Pelzer children, again and again. And I don't have any sympathy for their father. He was an utter failure - despite Dave's nearly-miraculous ability to love and forgive him, I don't have to. I loathe his total, weak, cowardly abandonment of the boys who needed him. Frankly, I picture him as a kind of worm. Sorry, Dave and Richard, but I think he's the worst one of all - how could he?

A Brother's Journey: Surviving a Childhood of Abuse.......2007-05-06
I enjoyed this book very much.. Iy makes me sad to think that a mother or father or anyone for that matter could abuse a child in the way that this one did. I am impresed that he got help and was able to go forward with his life.. I would recomend this book to everyone.
Horrible!.......2007-03-06
To think that someone could do these things to a child is horrible. This book made me want to cry. Another book that will grab your heart is This Can't Be Love! by Patricia Goins. You won't be able to put this book down.
Another viewpoint.......2006-10-29
After having read the 3 books by his brother David, it was very interesting to read the story from another child's viewpoint. And a reminder to we adults that events affect many others, whether intended or not. And how much influence we have on a a child's actions when they look upon an authority figure, parent or otherwise, as being an example to follow.
Book Description
"Parents, teachers, students, and scholars alike will welcome this fascinating and richly diverse collection of sources and reflections pertaining to the experiences of children and childhood over the past four centuries. The challenge of reconstructing the history of American childhood will be greatly enhanced and encouraged by this collection." --Philip Greven, author of Spare the Child
"The many faces of childhood as seen through the eyes of historians, novelists, humorists, psychologists, legal scholars, and the like come alive in this remarkable collection of new and familiar writing. A treasure house of original sources that comes at a time when children finally have our attention, and a very important contribution to understanding and safeguarding our future and theirs. Highly recommended." --Judith Wallerstein, Ph.D., author of The Good Marriage: How & Why Love Lasts
"Childhood in America undertakes a significant and timely task: it documents how radically concepts of childhood have changed over the course of history. By bringing us the voices of parents, "experts" and the young from the 17th century to the present, this book helps us to confront the problems of our own era free of mistaken assumptions about childhood in past times." --Arlene Skolnick, author of Embattled Paradise: The American Family in an Age of Uncertainty
"At a time when children increasingly enter our thinking about everything from sexuality and rights of privacy to social welfare and commercialization, we need perspective on childhood in all its guises. This anthology, so wide-ranging and full of surprises, gives us that insight and understanding." --Gary Cross, author of Kids' Stuff: Toys and the Changing World of American Cbildhood
Collecting a vast array of selections from past and present- from colonial ministers to Drs. Benjamin Spock and T. Berry Brazelton, from the poems of Anne Bradstreet to the writings of today's young people- Childhood in America brings to light the central issues surrounding American children. Eleven sections on childbirth through adolescence explore a cornucopia of issues, and each section has been carefully selected and introduced by the editors.
