As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. In Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Mary Shomon outlines the most common of these--too little thyroid hormones in the body. Weight gain, depression, fatigue, and what patients call "brain fog, Brillo hair, and prune skin" result. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism mimic so many other conditions--chronic fatigue, PMS, clinical depression--it can be very tricky to diagnose, especially since patients with HMOs may not get the thorough testing they need.
Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)
With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.
Shomon creates a sense of community by excerpting e-mails from her vast network of patients--voices that bring a sense of humor so often missing from health books. One quibble: she could have avoided the antidoctor stance in the beginning of her book, where she blames physicians, rather than incomplete science, for the misdiagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. --Rebecca Taylor

A must have.......2007-09-03
I think this book is great for patients that are undiagnosed. I suspected my sister was hypothyroid like I am but her doctor never tested and had her scheduled for a ton of specialists. I sent her this book and she had a diagnoses within the week. It helped her understand her test results and gave her the confidience to push for thorough testing. The symptom section is great. I prefer Ken Blanchard's book for understanding treatment options.
Great Informational Book.......2007-08-09
I have had hypthryoidism now for 5 fives. This book is so informative. I have referred back to it a million times. The one thing I would like to stress is the fact that doctors only check TSH and/or T4. Somehow, this standard has to change. I asked my doctor to give me a complete test, he refused stating that I only need TSH/T4. Yet I have lost about 1/2 of my hair even though my TSH level is within "normal" limits. I am searching for another doctor who is alittle more open to different approaches. Thanks Mary for the insight!
Great book.......2007-07-23
This is a book that every Hypothyroidism people should have. My suggestion is read this book first before you go to see a doctor. Knowledge you learn form this book will help you in many ways, and many years.

Was very excited to find a book, broken down for us patients whom have hypothyroidism. Not just for doctors only.I will use this for reference and questions for my doctor, from time to time.It helped me understand why things are happening to me.I thought it was part of getting old.Now I know better. And I know this is related to my fibromayalgia&vice versa. It is well worth the money to spend if you or a family member,or close friend has fibro or hypo.

One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yet most don't realize the mental and emotional components of this condition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden suffering that many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book to provide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promises author Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalance affects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to cope with the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent case studies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, and questionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier to check the medical information against your own situation. Each chapter ends with "valuable points to remember," making review easy. If you suffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you might, this book could be a valuable resource. --Joan Price
Book Description

At any given time, millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid disorder and experience a chronic mental anguish that almost certainly arises from the very same source. The Thyroid Solution is a must-read for anyone who suffers from a thyroid condition. It's the first mind-body approach to identifying and curing thyroid imbalances. Written by a medical pioneer and leading authority in the field of thyroid research, this groundbreaking book offers Dr. Ridha Arem's practical program for maintaining thyroid health through diet, exercise, and stress control--and through his revolutionary medical plan, which combines two types of hormone treatments with astounding results. Very helpful.......2007-08-23
I have hypothyroid and have found this book to be a helpful resource to which I refer frequently.
This should be one of your reference books if you have thyroid disease.......2007-05-16
This book is really a great source of introductory information on Thyroid function, disorders, treatments, and risks and failures of some treatments. I would also recommend Elaine Moore's books on this subject, but this would be a good first read. It will prepare you for her more advanced introduction of information. One of the highlights of this book was the constant sharing of personal experience stories that you will definitely find useful. The frustration of not being diagnosed until the symptoms kick your physician in the knee is lessened somewhat when you read of all the other people who've had similar frustrating experiences. This book will also arm you with an understanding that will help you spot disorders in your friends and family, quite possibly sparing them the long term of frustation and confusion.
I would be the first to suggest that endocrinologists and doctors in general will not spend the time to help you find out the cause of your thyroid disorder. For instance, is it bad or is it under an autoimmune attack? If the latter is the case, killing the thyroid alone will not address the autoimmune attack on other organs in your body. You really want to know how to intelligently ask your doctor questions like, "What happens to the parathyroids when you irradiate my thyroid?" "Can you guarantee I will not know the difference between what my thyroid used to produce and what some synthetic drug will do on my mind and body?" etc.
I'm not saying that Radioactive Iodine is terrible or in some situations, it may even be the best solution-- it is just not the only solution to these illnesses and for some reason, in the USA, RAI is the first option they always discuss using. Once Radiated, your thyroid is gone forever.
If you want to understand your illness so you can be your own advocate, this book is a great fist step. It is also quite inexpensive, compared to most special interest books on this topic. Scotty/Sioux City
The secret of the "Thyroid solution" is T3.......2007-03-13
This is the most comprehensive book about thyroid diseases on the market. Hypo and hyperthyroidism and their treatments are covered in great details. The author pays particular attention to the mental aspects of these illnesses.
Arem Ridha is way ahead of his colleagues in his recognition of T3 as a crucial ingredient in hormone replacement. 20% of the thyroid made by a healthy thyroid gland is T3. Yet when it comes to thyroid hormone replacement T3 is not prescribed by most doctors. If you've been on Synthroid and not feeling well, talk to your doctor about either adding the missing T3 or using the natural thyroid that contains T3 and T4 in one pill. There's a reason why the T3 containing preparations work better. I admire the authors admittance of not being able to treat patients despite the normal blood tests and his willingness to search for the solution for his patients. T3 is the secret ingredient of the "Thyroid Solution" described in this book.
The only shortcomings are limited coverage of Hashimoto and adrenal insufficiency (which often goes hand in hand with the thyroid disease). The thyroid resistance (Hypothyroidism Type II) isn't covered either. The author seems to be on the fence with the TSH. Some parts of the book question whether TSH is the golden standard and whether its wide 'normal' range can be trusted; other parts of the book advise to go by TSH. Will see where the author stands with his next edition.
All in all, this is a wonderful and much needed book!
This book contains far more thyroid hormone information than most physicians know........2007-02-05
The Thyroid Solution is the best single book I have read discussing thyroid hormone replacement. Dr. Arem Ridha provides a thorough explanation of the various thyroid hormone tests, including T4, T3, TRH, TSH, TPO, Antithyroglobulin, Antimicrosomal Antibody and TSab. Numerous case histories make the book more readable and understandable.
I was very impressed with the discussion of pins and needles pain and carpal tunnel syndrome correlations with hypothyroidism.
I especially enjoyed his discussion of the historical impact of hypothyroidism, upon Napoleon, Boris Yeltsin and the Bush family.
This book contains far more thyroid hormone information than most physicians know. This is a controversial statement, but it is based upon listening to the stories of many patients, testing them and observing them rapidly improve, after they received effective thyroid hormone replacement. Sadly, one of our fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue patients reported a seven year quest, involving 36 different health care providers, who finally treated her with thyroxine. Although she finally received a hypothyroidism diagnosis, she only had energy for two hours after awakening, before needing to return to bed. After Florida Detox correctly treated her with T3, Cytomel, she had energy for 12 hours daily.
Another patient reported he had to consult five health care providers, before finding one who would prescribe desiccated Armour Thyroid extract for his aging mother. He thanked me profusely, explaining her depression and brain fog lifted 48 hours, after receiving a mixture of T4 and T3 thyroid hormone. He reported she began feeding herself and smiling again.
Almost without exception, our Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients regain energy for eight to twelve hours daily, when treated with liothyronine, T3.
If you are weary of physician after physician telling you your hypothyroid symptoms are "all in your head" and you need to see a psychiatrist, read this book and find a physician willing to prescribe a trial of T3 thyroid hormone. ZRT Laboratory, in Beaverton, Oregon has a blood spot finger prick test available to the public, which can measure T3, T4 and TPO. If you can not convince your doctor to order thyroid testing, you can call ZRT Lab (866 600 1636)and ask them to send the test kit to you. Perhaps, when you have the actual test results, you can find a physician knowlegeable enough to prescribe the hormones you need.
Many patients are placed on antidepressant medications which accelerate weight gain and obliterate libido, when they actually need thyroid hormone. Many others are placed on expensive statins, to lower cholesterol, when thyroid hormone would work better, with fewer side effects and many additional benefits.
Undiagnosed and inadequately treated hypothyroidism is epidemic, in the United States and contributes heavily to our obesity epidemic and spiraling health care costs. Many environmental factors contribute to obesity, including pesticide, hormone and plastic residues, in addition to overuse of antibiotics. Polychlorinated Biphenyls can interfere with thyroid hormone receptors.
If you are attempting to avoid pharmaceuticals and other non natural treatments, please realize thyroid hormones are natural to our bodies.
You no longer live in a natural world, unless you grow your own food on an organic farm, in New Zealand, Switzerland or some other remote location. You are probably drinking chlorinated, fluorinated water or bottled water contaminated with bis phenol or other estrogenic plastic residues.

I think this book has helped me alot........2007-02-01
My Dr. recomended I read this book when we found out I had low thyroid. It was amazing, it was almost like this book was written about me!
Book Description
From patient advocate Mary Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, here is the first book to tackle the weight factors specific to thyroid patients and detail a conventional and alternative plan for lasting weight loss.
An estimated 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease––most of them women––and for the majority of them, losing weight is mentioned time and time again as a primary concern and chief frustration––a challenge made more difficult due to the metabolic slowdown of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. For these thyroid patients, treatment alone doesn't seem to resolve weight problems. Further, they may struggle with raising basic metabolism, resolving underlying nutritional deficiencies, treating depression and correcting brain chemistry imbalances, reducing stress, and combating insulin resistance.
o The Thyroid Diet will identify these factors that inhibit a thyroid patient's ability to lose weight, and offer solutions––both conventional and alternative––to help. It will discuss optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low–glycemic, high–fibre, low–calorie diet, eaten as smaller, more frequent meals to balance blood sugar. The Thyroid Diet addresses the use of various herbs, nutritional supplements, and prescription weight loss drugs, outlining the necessity of exercise, and drawing together all information into an integrated diet and exercise plan. It contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems.
o Mary Shomon has been praised by doctors around the country for her medical knowledge and sensitivity to patients' needs. She will be receiving similar blurbs for this new book. There are no other books on controlling your weight problems if you have a thyroid condition, yet over 40% of overweight people have evidence of a thyroid condition, and the weight loss problems facing them are unique and need a specific approach.

The Thyroid Diet: Manage your Metabolism.......2007-10-05
What a disappointment. Expecting something new here, but didn't get it. Basically this is the GI diet - and if that doesn't work for you then there are a whole host of other well known diets suggested. Though the book begins by giving numerous examples of people who seem to eat little but get/stay fat, it goes on to trot out the usual 'eat less and exercise more' advice.
The Thyroid Diet, By Mary Shomon.......2007-09-24
This book, is wonderful, whether you are a long time thyroid patient or just starting to underestand your thyroid...this book and her many other titles that Mary J. Shomon. She gets you to understand things that a/your doctor talks you into circles. or you have tried everything in the world to get your body moving, this is the book for you. this makes a great gift too. i highly recommend this book, or her many titles that she offers.
try it, and you'll be the best buy you have ever done...
thanks to Mary J. Shomon the guru of Thyroid.
Eye Opening.......2007-08-23
Although I am reading this book in stages, it has already given me so much information. I have started a new regime of supplements that has been approved by my doctor and I think I'm begining to see results. It is nice to know that I am not the only person having problems losing weight with a thyroid problem. I started to feel that it was only happening to me.
Thank you Mary J. Shomon
Not a diet.......2007-07-07
This is not a diet, it is an overview of all the other stuff Shomon has out. It is a recommendation of how to manage your thyroid, if you haven't read anything or are just finding out about a thyroid problem, it has lots of information, but if you have had thyroid problems and know about them, it is the same stuff you've always heard. I didn't learn anything new, and it really isn't a diet............is was disappointed. No new answers for those of us who are being treated with medication. If weight is a problem, as I have with thyroid problems, this is not the answer..........
Outstanding & such a relief.......2007-06-12
I literally cried as I read this book on hypothyroidism. I had radioactive iodine treatment in 1994 to treat Graves Disease. I guess the disease has been in 'remission' all these years. A few years ago I started feeling lousy. I was gaining weight no matter how active I was plus I was eating way healthy. I was losing energy almost daily, no matter what I did to try to energize myself. I had leg cramps; my cholesterol (the bad stuff) went up; blood sugar levels went up; I became iron deficient. All in a matter of a few months. My medical doctor harped on my weight and lack of physical activity. Mary Shomon's book liberated me, made me feel sane again, helped me realize that I am OK, I will survive, and that what I am experiencing is not all in my head. Thank you, thank you, thank you SO very much.

Thyroid Making You Fat book.......2007-02-16
I just got this book out of storage to re-read and I realize it's wasted money. I am already on natural thyroid replacement and with that I have lost a lot of weight but to follow a 1000 calorie a day diet (in one place he says 800 per day) is impossible for me. My doctor wants me getting highly nutritous foods and there is no way on this amount. Plus, how many of us are willing to do this for not 1 week, not 2, but for 4 weeks! AND when I was doing aerobics religiously and following 1000 cal per day, I didn't lose weight but this is what he recommends. Never again.
I gave it 2 stars because it did convince me, a couple of years ago, to find a doctor who uses natural thyroid instead of just synthetics. If the synthetics work for you, hooray but they didn't for me.
No help.......2007-01-10
I didn't find this book of any help. I was also already diagnosed but hoped to find a way to lose weight after 15 years of gradual increase in weight due to an underactive thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis). I couldn't possibly stick to this diet and decided that it wasn't worth trying anyway, just to find out what I know already. I had hoped it would teach me a way to eat that would help me lose weight, but it does not. It might just be of use to people who haven't yet been diagnosed, but I doubt it, because if the doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet, he is not going to do so on the basis of a book.
A Great Book To Fill in the Gaps That Your Doc Doesn't.......2007-01-07
After struggling with a low thyroid condition for 9 years, this book gave me information that was very helpful in understanding the reasons that synthetic thyroid hormone was no longer working. This book taught me that my weight is more of a reflection of how my thyroid gland is working more than what I was eating. It also helped me to understand why, that while eating 600-800 healthy calories per day and exercising 1 hour per day...I still wasn't loosing weight. Wish I would have read it a year ago!

Everything Health Guide to Thyroid Disease .......2007-09-06
It has now been a year since my initial diagnosis of hypothryoidism and Hashimoto's Thryoiditis in July 2006. In my intial year, I have read many articles and research on thryoid disease, but most did not answer all my questions. I recently came across this book during my initial appointment with Dr. Friedman in July 2007. This book not only answered my questions, but it answered other items I did not know. This book has a lot information, but it is basic enough for all levels to understand. I highly recommend this book for those with thryoid problems and/or family and/or friends with thryoid problems.

For anyone with a thyroid problem, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! I wish it could have been published years earlier when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Dr. Friedman and Winnie Yu have put together information that is easy to read and understand. As the title implies, they have included everything you will need to know. The more information and knowledge you accumulate about any condition you have, the better able you will be to get proper treatment. I thought "life" was really slowing me down, but it was really my thyroid!

Comprehensive, practical, and easy-to-understand guide to thyroid disorders.......2007-05-07
This is an excellent layperson's guide to thyroid disorders. It is written in a technically accurate yet easy-to-follow style. The book combines explanations of the known thyroid disorders together with practical advice on diagnosis and treatment for patients.
As well as discussing current medical knowledge of thyroid dysfunction in a succinct yet comprehensive manner, this book also touches on issues yet to be fully resolved. For example -- the reference range for TSH, the controversy over treating subclinical hypothyroidism, the use of pig gland extracts of thyroid hormone (Armour) versus synthetic T4, and the possibility that prophylactic T4 therapy or selenium supplementation may be useful for patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.
Overall, this guide is highly recommended for those who have -- or suspect they have -- a thyroid disorder.
Much more than just thyroid.......2007-04-14
Dr. Friedman's latest book (The Everything Health Guide to Thyroid Disease: Professional Advice on Getting the Right Diagnosis, Managing Your Symptoms, And Feeling Great) is much more than just about the thyroid. He explains how the thyroid is affected by other parts of the body, especially the endocrine system. He talks about the management of the thyroid hormones and how other hormones can influence each of these. He shows the reader the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, and how each of these three influences the other. Not only is the book comprehensive, it is well written, well organized, and easy to understand.
Dr. Friedman and Ms.Yu bring to the reader the latest research, reasons why our hormones can get out of kilter, and ideas to take to one's own physician for better, informed medical care.

"Toxins, which are all around us, are at the root of many auto-immune diseases. They lurk in our clothing, our furniture, and in the products we use every day. Our bodies make heroic efforts to eliminate the toxins, but sometimes the burden is just too much. Get the facts on: . Bottled water: Toxins from the plastic bottles can leak into the water. Use a water filter instead. . Plants: Did you know pollution-reducing plants, including mums and spider plants, can remove chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air? . Toxins in your home: Carpets, furniture, plastics, foam rub-ber, upholstery, tiles, linoleum, paint, and varnishes emit hazardous chemicals into the air. . Safe pest controls: Use boric acid and heat instead of toxic pesticides. . Radiation: Protect yourself from the dangers of microwaves, computers, cell phones, televisions, power lines, heating pads, electric blankets, and more."

The "trick" to the "drug free" therapies for each category listed is basically the same, and people concerned about what they eat and personal health already know this stuff. Searching the internet for information on these disorders is more helpful than this book.
Alternative Treatments for Autoimmune Conditions.......2007-03-01
For me, this book was a more holistic supplement to Mary J. Shomon's book, Living Well with Autoimmune Disease. It is logically formatted and is an easy resource for the specific condition about which one wishes to learn. The plus is it offers medical treatment and counters with non-drug treatment options for autoimmune conditions. A glossary and an appendix add to its value as a resource.

Excellent book.......2006-05-05
Don't let the previous review scare you. The quackwatch guys are the quacks themselves. Barrett, who heads up the quackwatch "research", is not a board certified doctor of anything and has been sued a bunch of times. The book itself is excellent and describes a treatment protocol that works. This protocol brought me back from near death when no local doctor could even figure out what was wrong with me. The protocol has also significantly helped our son who has autism. The "best" specialists told us there was no treatment for our son's autism and he would be permanently institutionalized by the age of 7. However, like many autism kids doing biomedical treatments, including those listed in this book, he has almost recovered. He's now 8 and attends a regular school where he performs on grade level. The treatments in this book work. It's definately worth a look.

This believable book is authored by quacks - read this website first http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/edelson.html I thought this book would help my daughter but instead mislead us. The Edelson Center is closed and the doctors are being sued.

Thyroid health and psychological health are often linked in ways of which many people are not aware. As a person develops a thyroid condition, he or she often becomes depressed. This depression can lead to more problems with the thyroid which, in turn, lead to further depressiona vicious cycle that is difficult to treat unless the problem is addressed on several levels.
This book offers an overview of what the medical community knows about dysfunctional thyroid. You'll receive an introduction to thyroid disorders, what the thyroid hormone does, and how it functions in relation to their psychological well-being. Of particular concern, they learn, is hypothyroidism, the name for a lower-than-normal production of thyroid hormone that most often leads to depression. The book proposes a number of diet and lifestyle changes you can experiment with in addition to conventional medical treatment to try to correct a thyroid condition, as well as cognitive techniques for overcoming depression.
