Welcome Guide for Parents.......2007-09-19
Having read a number of books on parenting, this book was found to be the most inspiring in terms of causing us to reach to God. As Christians we are called to walk by faith in every area of our lives. This book shows us how to be loving and strategic in our parenting whilst reaching to God in faith believing for our children also to walk with Him.
Teenagers.......2007-08-09
Reading parenting books takes time of which parents have little. This book has been encouraging and convicting- well worth the time. I highly recommend Age of Opportunity to any parent!
Parenting Teenagers.......2007-07-09
GREAT BOOK.
If you enjoyed "Shepherding a Child's Heart" and desire to train your children to be thoughtful and caring of others in their heart - not just training behavior - you will love this book. It looks at the great opportunity we have in the teenage years to help them see their self-centeredness and trust in Christ to be transformed.
Get to the heart of the matter.......2007-01-30
This is the best book I've read on parenting teens from a Biblical perspective. Tripp helps parents think about what the heart issues are, not just control the external behaviors. If you're interested in taking the time to use the trials of life to point your child to the gospel of Christ, this book is for you.
Great Resource.......2007-01-19
As a young pastor who does not have any teenagers of my own, this book has been a great resource to hand out to parents. Tripp's book has really helped open many of our parents' eyes to the wonderful opportunity for discipleship through the teenage years.

Informative.......2007-05-31
In this book is proof that almost every woman is in the same predicament. It is entertaining to read as well.
Good for some audiences.......2007-05-06
This is a well written book. It is, however, for a specific audience. The overall theme of the book is ways to relax and get in touch with your body. There are ways to do that, that one might not have thought. It is very basic. I'd already done 99.5 % of the stuff in there, and it wasn't working, so although the book is good, it did not work for me. This book is based on very traditional sex, very traditional sex roles, and more towards the romantic, and "making love" instead of purely physical f***ing. This book would be good for women who see alot of sex topics as taboo, and are not comfortable with their bodies, or expressing what they want out of sex.
Just what I was looking for........2004-01-23
This book was just what I was looking for. I didn't want some preachy book about how women have been opressed for so long. I didn't want someone to talk to me in a condescending way, or make assumptions about me or my partners. I wanted something concrete-a program or steps that I could follow. And this is exactly what I found! The author offers a step-by-step program, which guides you to orgasm by taking "baby steps" to get there. The program has helped my relationship immensly, and I know it will be a very rewarding journey all the way through to the last steps!
good book.......2001-12-19
It seems that most of the sexual guides out there are geared to giving the man pleasure. In my experience that has never been a problem. The guides that are geared toward woman are usually filled with stories about muti orgasmic woman sharing their adventures. If you are a woman who really wants some clear cut advice that really works given in a friendly chatty kind of format this book is for you. It is written by a woman who had the frustation of regular unsatisfying sex herself and tells how she learned to overcome this. It was not written by some clinical doctor. The program teaches you how to be in control of your own orgasm in bed not be dependent on the abilities of your partner to have one. It's empowering. I definately recommend this book.
the most subtle and positive feminist approach ..........1999-12-12
Of all how-to-do sex books for women, this one is the best because it focuses on the intimate relationship of women to their own sexuality. More than just giving techniques, Rachel Swift leads the reader to a very natural change in the everyday behavior, focusing on how to gain control in sexual (but it extends to more ...) situations by learning to develop the ability to satisfy oneself and to get familiar with one's own fantasies.
Book Description
This new Chicken Soup book offers a heartwarming and uplifting collection of stories that celebrate the lifelong bond of sisterhood. Whether they share this special connection with someone through genetics or the heart, only a sister can understand the complex, deep and dynamic relationship they share with loved ones as they journey together through the stages of life. For younger sisters who look up to an older one, older siblings who tolerate a younger sister tagging along, or the brother who knows full well that girls can wrestle as well as any boy can, this book celebrates the sisters in our lives. It conveys how sisters influence us during life's most defining moments: helping us face the schoolyard bully; providing wise counsel during our first crush and subsequent comfort after the breakup; and refusing to reveal intimate secrets to parents or friends. With real-life stories from celebrities and everyday sisters-next-door, chapters include: On Love, Insights and Lessons, Sibling Rivalry, Overcoming Obstacles, The Bond Between Sisters, Sisters by Heart, On Family (Brothers, Too!), and Special Memories and Traditions. While they may not live under the same roof, act in the same manner or even get along without an occasional spat, nothing creates a more special and lasting bond than sisterhood. Now there's a book to celebrate that bond.

Sisters Chicken Soup.......2007-01-10
I bought the book for my 3 sisters and me. I gave them to my sisters for Christmas and asked them to let me know when they read certain stories that reminded them of things they remember. I haven't heard from them yet, but I know I will, as all 4 of us are close at heart though miles apart. They all agreed it was a perfect gift.
Sister to Sister.......2006-11-17
I bought this book with the intention of giving it to my sister when I asked her to be my maid of honor at my wedding. I had forgotten that I already bought this book for her (I kept this copy for me). I marked a touching story in the book having to do with a wedding. She didn't get the meaning behind it, but it made her cry anyways and the best part is that she said yes!
chicken soup for sisters.......2006-03-05
I was bawling by the third story in the first chapter! This book is a real tear jerker.
Another great chicken soup book in the series.
A must to share between sisters and friends. There is a chapter dedicated to brothers as well. I would have to say this is probably the best chicken soup book i have read by far!!!
The Chicken Soup that "Touched Me"........2003-11-04
This book really touched me. It taught me to love my sisters whenever they are mean or do bad things. One of these stories was the most awesome story ever! I said that this one girl's sister had cancer and lost all of her hair. When she went to visit her sister she had a hat on that said "having a bad hair day," but when she took the hat off she was bald, she shaved all of the hair on her head off so her sister woulnd't feel bad about having no hair. That was the story that touched me the most.
Excellent Read.......2003-04-14
My First Chicken Soup book that I have read, and this was simply excellent. I laughed, cried, and it brought back all my childhood memories.

Unconditional love is something we should all aspire to........2003-11-17
I was given this book and thought "yea right" it lay under the car seat for years. I discovered it there at a time when I'd run out of reading matter. It's a top book. Up there with the "Tao of Pooh". Read it!
Steps you can take right now to improve your relationship.......2000-05-10
This book has a lot of easy techniques for improving your quality of life in a relationship. It talks about converting "addictive demands" to "preferences", accepting your partner and creating an "us" relationship. Just practicing the first two techniques can completely change the feeling in your marriage whether your partner reads the book or not.
The book borrows from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques (many of which have good experimental efficacy studies) but is written in an easy to understand, interesting and readable style.
A life-changing book if ever there was one!.......2000-03-28
I highly recommend this book to anyone in his/her journey of self-actualization. Mr. Keyes speaks of the "aha experience", and I must say that I had many while reading it. You do have the power within to be happy and to have rewarding relationships. This book gives you the tools to get started. I can't say that I'm all the way there, but it's nice to have a reference place to remind me where I'd like to be.

Put More 'I' in Your Life.......2007-10-08
When I read a book that inspires me, I mark the pages that I want to go back and study again. Of the 232 pages in 'The Dance of Anger', I turned down over 50 corners.
My first reading was in 1989, and I still go back and find reasons why this book made such an impact on my life. The biggest lesson was to put more 'I' in my life. Then, to remember, that I have a right to my thoughts and feelings; that no one else will take responsibility for me; that I cannot change other people; and, that the only person I have power over is myself.
The 'Dance' has to do with becoming your own person without losing others. 'Anger' is a tool for managing our relationships and helping us become our best.
I have recommended this book to many friends who are angry - at themselves, at their partners, at their families, at their employers - and, who have expressed a desire to improve their lives.
The book offers many excellent suggestions such as 'The Plan for Reshaping': think about your problem; seek temporary distance from it; don't place blame, be vague, or tell others how to feel; appreciate everyone's differences; speak up for yourself; and, use 'I'.
Take the challenge. Read the book. Become your own person.

For Once a Useful Self-Help Book!.......2007-10-07
I bought this book on a recommendation by a psychologist I was going to for help in my marriage. After I bought it I read it so throughly that I used a yellow highlighter to mark pertinent parts that really applied to the status quo of not only my husband, but my parents and the ways the under-functioning / over-functioning dynamics worked in various relationships.
In fact, after having this book as a tool to apply to my life, I didn't need to see the therapist anymore- the book gave me more direction than therapy did!
I told my fellow co-workers (mostly female) about this amazing book, and lent it to one, who then passed it on to another, and so on and so forth. When I got the book back afterwards, I was interested to find out that each one had used their own highlighter (in a different color). The book was a rainbow of colors from all the different passages that stood out as they pertained to each one.
I always point people I know to this book. No matter that everyone has different issues, this book can help clarify those persistent problems that never seem to get resolved no matter how hard you try.
I have read Ms. Lerner's other books, and although they are good, they don't really hit the nail on the head like this one did.
positive, understanding guidance.......2007-09-09
A book for everyone, those hurt by their own anger or struggling with someone else's.
This is a classic for a reason!.......2007-08-15
There is so much sense in this book. It is good advice for men too.
Very Insightful and Provocative.......2007-07-03
My counselor recommended this book to me when I was going through a separation and divorce. I recently bought this book as a gift for a friend who is going through a difficult time. Lerner's experience and insights are very helpful. The concepts presented are provocative in that it will make the reader think about how their family of origin's relationship dynamic can often be seen reflected in the present. A must read for anyone wondering why they keep making the same choices in partners and how to break the cycle.

Book Description
Over the last forty years, the number of American households with a stay-at-home parent has dwindled as women have increasingly joined the paid workforce and more women raise children alone. Many policy makers feared these changes would come at the expense of time mothers spend with their children. In Changing Rhythms of American Family Life, sociologists Suzanne Bianchi, John Robinson, and Melissa Milkie analyze the way families spend their time and uncover surprising new findings about how Americans are balancing the demands of work and family.
Using time diary data from surveys of American parents over the last four decades, Changing Rhythms of American Family Life finds that--despite increased workloads outside of the home--mothers today spend at least as much time interacting with their children as mothers did decades ago--and perhaps even more. Unexpectedly, the authors find the increase in mothers' time at work has not resulted in an overall decline in sleep or leisure time. Rather, mothers have made time for both work and family by sacrificing time spent doing housework and by increased "multitasking." Changing Rhythms of American Family Life finds that the total workload (in and out of the home) for employed parents is high for both sexes, with employed mothers averaging five hours more per week than employed fathers and almost nineteen hours more per week than homemaker mothers. Comparing average workloads of fathers with all mothers--both those in the paid workforce and homemakers--the authors find that there is gender equality in total workloads, as there has been since 1965. Overall, it appears that Americans have adapted to changing circumstances to ensure that they preserve their family time and provide adequately for their children.
Changing Rhythms of American Family Life explodes many of the popular misconceptions about how Americans balance work and family. Though the iconic image of the American mother has changed from a docile homemaker to a frenzied, sleepless working mom, this important new volume demonstrates that the time mothers spend with their families has remained steady throughout the decades.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful Tool.......2003-11-11
I personally believe that this book does a good job on breaking all of the information down. It is more of an overview of the family, which I think is helpful for an introductory course. I think it is a good book!
Don't bother reading this book.......1999-12-12
I read this book for a Sociology class and was not impressed. The book contained many factual errors. More importantly, the book is offensive to any moral person. The author took every opportunity to beat up on religious people and their beliefs.
I don't think that it's unreasonable to assume that the author is a devout socialist. Furthurmore, the author did a good job of accusing white Christian males of causing all of the world's problems. I would highly recommend that you don't read this book.
Limited textbook on marrige and the family.......1999-02-19
This is the standard textbook for studying marriage and the family, unfortunately. It is quite a good introduction with interdiscplinary perspectives from thee authors, but their underlying definition of "family" is inherently flawed. The traditinal "family" definition is not covered, nor are alternatives to contraception and abortion like chastisty and nurturing women who want to keep their baby.
Someone needs to write a similiar textbook without this underlying bias. I hope there is a publisher out there that will agree.
Book Description
Family Communication: Nurturing and Control in a Changing World thoroughly reviews the traditional family communication theories of roles theory, family systems theory, and rules theory in an engaging, non-traditional way. This book uniquely organizes the study of family communication around the concepts of
nurturing and
control in all family relationships, across all family forms, and their relationships to psychological processes and communicative outcomes in families.
Key Features:
- Looks at Family in All Forms: Traditional nuclear; non-traditional nuclear; bi-nuclear families; cohabitation, single-parent households; step-family and blended configurations; gay families; couples with no children; and extended families are all examined. While not all families fit neatly within any of the traditional definitions, this book articulates a sentiment that most students can resonate toâthat all family forms include some form of nurturing and control.
- Explores Sociological and Psychological Factors: Various forces such as governmental, religious, media influences, and social science research, cause us to assume most families are traditional and nuclear, using biological, legal, and sociological definitions. In addition to the sociological and psychological bases of developmental processes, the development of parental attachment is fully discussed, showing how nurturing and controlling communication processes encourage socio-emotional competence in children.
- Explicates New Research Findings: A new family communication theoryâ
Inconsistent Nurturing as Control Theoryâexplores the ways in which family members attempt to change the undesirable behaviors of a particular family member (e.g., substance abuser, eating disordered individual, gambler, depressed person, violent individual) through their use of nurturing as control.
Intended Audience:
Perfect for the introductory undergraduate course in Family Communication; as well as courses in Sociology, Social and Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Family Counseling, Family Education, and Home Economics

From the Author.......2005-11-24
They MADE me put a rating -- what could I do -- I wrote it!!
Okay, so YES, this is a textbook aimed at juniors or seniors in college. Hopefully, however, it also includes information which is of interest to those of us who live in families. Besides all the academic stuff highlighted above by the publisher, this book also includes chapters on:
Dating/Serious Dating/Cohabitation/Engagement/Marriage
The Impact of Adding Children to Nuclear and Step-families
Raising Children (including the effectiveness of various
parenting styles/encouraging higher self-
esteem/encouraging mastery orientation/logical
versus natural consequences)
Maintaining Closeness in Married Couples
Self-disclosure
Affection
Emotional Regulation/Expression
Supportiveness
Sexual Communication
Dealing with Conflict
Styles and strategies
Violence
Handling Substance Abuse/Eating Disorders/Depression in Families
The Power of Thought and Communication in Families
I tried to cover the research but still write in an approachable manner, so hopefully, it will be readable and have something interesting to say to anyone who is interested in families and how to live and communicate within them.
Also, on a personal note, after reviewing this literature for this book, I decided to return to school to get a masters in counseling psychology so that I can get a marriage and family therapist license. I think this book would be of interest to anyone therapeutically inclined because it explores the full range of family types and the processes that occur within all levels of families (married couples/parent-children/step-parent - step-child/siblings). Understanding the family context along with an understanding of the current U.S. mosaic of families will provide useful "normalizing" information for family members who are trying to cope with the normal processes that most family members experience.
May you too find something of relevance to you and your family. Improving family communication is certain to have long lasting effects on your family satisfaction AND stability -- both goals that most of us will hold in common.
