Book Description

With motherhood comes one of the toughest decisions of a woman’s life: Stay at home or pursue a career? The dilemma not only divides mothers into hostile, defensive camps but pits individual mothers against themselves. Leslie Morgan Steiner has been there. As an executive at The Washington Post, a writer, and mother of three, she has lived and breathed every side of the “mommy wars.” Rather than just watch the battles rage, Steiner decided to do something about it. She commissioned twenty-six outspoken mothers to write about their lives, their families, and the choices that have worked for them. The result is a frank, surprising, and utterly refreshing look at American motherhood.

Ranging in age from twenty-five to seventy-two and scattered across the country from New Hampshire to California, these mothers reflect the full spectrum of lifestyle choices. Women who have been home with the kids from day one, moms who shuttle from full-time office jobs to part-time at-home work, hard-driving executives who put in seventy-hour-plus weeks: they all get a turn. The one thing these women have in common, aside from having kids, is that they’re all terrific writers.

Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley vividly recounts how her generation stormed the American workplace–only to take refuge at home when the workplace drove them out. Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minsky describes what it felt like to hear her kids scream “I hope you never come back!” when she flew to L.A. to launch the show that made her career. Susan Cheever, novelist, biographer, and New York Newsday columnist, reports on the furious battles between the stroller pushers and the briefcase bearers on the streets of Manhattan. Lois R. Shea traded the journalistic fast track for a house in the country where she could raise her daughter in peace. Ann Misiaszek Sarnoff, chief operating officer of the Women’s National Basketball Association, argues fiercely that you can combine ambition and motherhood–and have a blast in the process.

Candid, engaging, by turns unflinchingly honest and painfully funny, the essays collected here offer an astonishingly intimate portrait of the state of motherhood today. Mommy Wars is a book by and for and about the real experts on motherhood and hard work: the women at home, in the office, on the job every day of their lives.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept .......2007-07-16

But it got a bit repetitive after awhile as all of the excerpts were from writers, many who attended ivy league and lived on the east coast. What happened to the single mom from Deluth who had to work her way though business school or the mom of twins from Seattle who gave up her career as an nurse to be at home for her kids? I think the concept for this book is a good one but I think it needed more of a variety of women, both economically, geographically and education wise.

4 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Title Masks a Book that Has So Much Heart.......2007-05-08

Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families is a gut-wrenching collection of 26 essays that go far beyond the usual tirades of working versus stay-at-home moms. The authors in this collection shine a spotlight on the essence of motherhood in chapters that will have you nodding your head, rolling your eyes, even shedding tears.

The writers, including Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley and Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minksy, run the gamut in their approach to motherhood. One mother wanted to work, but her husband made her feel so guilty that she walked away from a lucrative assignment. Another woman put away her briefcase upon learning her son's diagnosis of autism.

Other women could not imagine not working, including the book's editor, who had an abusive first husband and needed to know she could always provide for herself and her kids.

The stories in this book are fascinating. One black woman, married to a white man, calls herself "bicultural". She writes that historically, black women have worked to augment their husband's salaries. Her black friends never ask her about being a working mother; her white friends constantly discuss it. Another writer says that affluence contributes to the "mommy wars", because the working class, well, work, without so much handwringing.

The essays carry many common themes. Was your own mother happy, or not? Was your childhood happy, or not? Would you want you as your own mother? Are your choices working for you? Because if so, then it doesn't matter if another's choices are different.

This is a book that drives home how hard women are on one another, when they should be compassionate. It also stresses the fleeting years we have with young children, and how we need to be prepared for our lives post-kids.

Iris Krasnow, who is credited for kicking off the stay-at-home trend in 1997, writes about having older kids, kids heading off to college, and how time has mellowed her views.

"Who will I be when they're gone?" she writes. "What am I supposed to do with 126 Beanie Babies, including the Princess Diana bear we paid fifty bucks for and waited in line three hours to buy? My later book...explores the importance of developing ourselves beyond our families. Children do leave. Parents die. Jobs change. We can count only on ourselves."

This is a book all parents, fathers and mothers, should take to heart.

4 out of 5 stars It Could Have Been Called "Editor Wars".......2007-04-14

This book is really pretty good, both informative and entertaining, but I don't think every essay needed to be written by a high profile professional writer or editor, most of whom wrote for The Washington Post or TV shows at some point in her career. That got old. I mean, how many people would rave about a similar book with mommy essays written by a bunch of lawyers, for example? I wish the author had mixed it up some.

5 out of 5 stars Sensationalized title but solid book.......2007-04-03

Let's face it: the title of this book was chosen to exploit the whole media hype surrounding women at odds with each other-- in this case, a stay-at-home mommy vs. working mommy version of "Mean Girls." Open up the book though and you'll find a completely different message. The essays presented here are unflinchingly honest, no holds barred accounts of how stay-at-home moms and working moms really feel about their choices. There is no cat fight to be found here, which is a refreshing relief.

Some of the criticisms of this book have been that all the women are writers. That's not actually entirely true; while most of the women work or have worked in some form of media/publishing/writing, there are still others represented. The problem is that when looking for women to write essays that are going to be well-written, enlightening and enjoyable, it would be hard to randomly assign essays to women in all different fields-- you just wouldn't know what you would get. When you assign an essay to an established writer, you know you have a much better shot at getting something good. That said, I still felt that although the women represented here were largely writers, their feelings on motherhood and working (full-time and part-time) were completely universal. True, most of the moms represented here were also middle to upper middle class and therefore their decisions to work or not were largely internal and matters of self-esteem rather than financial necessity, but their guilt and/or ennui were just as powerful as anyone's. And several of the stay-at-home mothers did report that the decision to stay home did impact their finances negatively (although not direly) and tough financial decisions had to be made.

As for the essays themselves, most of them were excellent, but the themes did tend to get a bit repetitive at times. The book could have easily been 50-100 pages shorter and not suffered at all. There were several "perpective" essays that I imagine the editor included for variety, but which didn't necessaily belong in the group and only served to make the collection feel too long. For instance, there were two essays by women who don't yet have children which the author set up by asserting that though these two don't have children yet, they have a lot to say. The fact of the matter is that anyone who has kids knows that no matter how you thought you'd feel before having kids, it has little or no bearing on how you feel after having them. You just cannot intellectually prepare yourself for motherhood and how you will feel once you're holding that little baby in your arms. There were also a couple of irritating essays, like one by a working mother who feels so not guilty and is so tickled pink by her mothering skills, that it just doesn't feel honest at the end of the day. Not as compared to the other essays by women who bared their hearts and souls. There was also a "feminist viewpoint" essay by a woman who is now a grandmother which really shed no light on anything. But those essays were the clunkers in a series of wonderful, illuminating essays, where every page turn is another "a-ha! I feel exactly the same way!" moment.

This book does an excellent job of presenting both sides of the equation in a way that both sides can understand and empathize with. The stay-at-home moms can discover that the busy, self-important looking working mom is really torn as she drops her kid off at preschool and can't stay to schmooze with the other moms, and the working mom can discover that the smug seeming, "I'm better than you" stay-at-home mom is often bored out of her skull having to spend all day entertaining a toddler. The book is also enhanced tremendously by the editor's two essays which bookend the rest, wherein she admits to her own insecurities about her choices.

The women in this book stand by their choices, but pass no real judgement on others' choices, preferring to turn the light inwards and explore how being a working or stay-at-home mom makes them really feel. Though most are content with their decisions, they have no problem listing the pitfalls along with the highlights of the consequences of their choices. The Mommy Wars are not with each other, as it turns out, but within each of us.

5 out of 5 stars Sobering, Profound and Moving........2007-03-29

It's a decision all mothers face, at least in theory. For many, of course, staying home is not an option. But even when it is, life doesn't become perfect overnight - especially when one is "working from home," the third reality for mothers.

Steiner's title would have us believe we're going to watch an argument. Instead, we're treated to thoughtful, thought-provoking essays by a wide variety of mothers and journalists. Sobering, profound and very moving.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for someone planning to be a single mother........2007-01-16

This book answered a lot of my questions and gave me a lot to think about. I enjoyed all the different opinions and situations. It was also a great read. It would be wise for all single women who want children to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Choosing Single Motherhood: The Thinking Woman's Guide.......2007-01-09

This book, in my opinion, is a good reference for every woman considering single motherhood. Mikki Morrissette, makes it a point to bring examples from real life when writing about issues such as becoming pregnant by a donor sperm or adopting a child.
I found the book helpful in not only as a guide for all options of single motherhood but also as a thought tool to the many issues that single motherhood's entails.

4 out of 5 stars Informative book for single women considering DI or adoption.......2006-07-23

Single motherhood is a profoundly life altering decision. This book helps women considering single motherhood by choice to take a realistic look at their options and the possible complications and difficulties. The interviews with "grown - up" children is a bonus and fairly reflects the perceptions of the majority of the children raised by single moms by choice. Single moms by choice or by chance will also want to check out The Complete Single Mother, recently published in a completely revised third edition.

5 out of 5 stars Finally...Expert Advice on the Tough Realities of Choice Motherhood.......2006-03-09

Speaking as someone who has already accomplished choice motherhood, the best part of this book is the expert advice addressing what the tough issues are and ways to solve them.

Raising a boy as a single mother isn't easy. There are obvious and (as I learned from the book) not so obvious reasons why children need both same- and opposite-sex role models. I really had never considered that rough-housing could be a teaching mechanism rather than just a testosterone-laden way of bonding! Mikki has included research from many different child experts and provides a concise synopsis of ways to lessen the effects of the tough realities that we can't avoid.

This book is a must-read and has a place of honor on my reference shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A review from Australia, February 2006.......2006-02-28

A fantastic read for anyone who is considering choice motherhood or has chosen choice motherhood and is interested in hearing about others experience. As someone who has already chosen the Single Motherhood route using DI I have found this a great resource.

The experience of mothers and children was of most interest to me and I think the book has been the best on the subject that I have read over the last five years. It includes information on mourning the dream, deciding to make the choice, conception choices (open identity, anonymous, known donor, adoption etc), budgetting, support systems, community reaction to name a few. The research for the book has been extensive and includes interviews with women who made this choice many years ago and now have teenage or young adult childen, along with interviews with the children brought up by Choice Mothers.

In short a very valuable book whether you are yet to make the choice or if you are already down the track and looking for a resource to add to your knowledge.

Helping the Stork The sourcebook for all the information parents-to-be need to know about the choices and challenges of donor insemination Each year donor insemination (DI) offers a pathway to parenthood for the hundreds of thousands who turn to family-building alternatives. Although DI is considered as often as adoption, couples facing male infertility, as well as single women and lesbian couples, have had few places to turn for information about this method, which has been shrouded in secrecy. In Helping the Stork, parents-to-be, as well as friends and family, doctors, and counselors, can explore the choices and challenges raised by this alternative to overcoming childlessness. This comprehensive handbook moves through each step of the process: reaching a solid decision about whether donor insemination is the best choice for a family's future; handling the difficult issue of privacy; selecting a donor and getting started; and learning to thrive as a family meeting DI's added challenges. Full of wisdom from medical and mental health experts, Helping the Stork is also enriched with stories from many families who share their insights and experiences. This book is a reassuring, supportive, and helpful guide that no one considering or going through the process of donor insemination should be without. Visit us online at http://www.mcp.com/mgr

5 out of 5 stars Thank good ness for this book!.......2003-06-03

This book was a wonderful tool for my husband and I when we were exploring DI as an option. This is the one book that truly addresses our unique infertility situation. None of the other infertility books spend more than a page talking about using donor sperm. This was wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars A great book to help with the loss!.......2002-10-31

I am a DI adoptee and I recommended this book to my mother. She really felt validated by the book. As an DI adoptee I also recommend "Adoption Forum" by Kasey Hamner. It covers DI from all angles. And those touched by DI are represented in many of the other topics. Oh, and remember, always disclose!!

4 out of 5 stars Helped me feel less unique.......2002-10-15

I agree with other reviewers that this book focuses more on the emotional side than the technical. However, I can get all the technical information I need from my doctor. What this book gave me was a sense that there are a LOT of others out there who are doing what I'm doing. It also helped me focus on and deal with all the stress that the process brings with it. I think you can get a lot out of this book even if you are not the hetero couple that is more targeted by the examples. You still have to deal with the issues between you and the child and the donor, no matter what your relationship is, and those chapters were very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A Godsend for us!.......2002-10-02

This book was an ENORMOUS help to my husband and me. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it is focused more on the emotional aspects and couples dealing with male infertility and may not be such a great help to single mothers and lesbian couples. But there ARE those of us out here in that category of couples with male factor infertility. My husband and I had already tried unsuccessfully to conceive through ICSI and could not afford more attempts. Donor insemination was our only other option besides adoption. This book focused on EXACTLY what we needed. What are the pros and cons, tell or don't tell others, tell or don't tell the child (I felt they were pro-telling, but discussed the positives and negatives of each choice), known donor or anonymous? These were some of the many issues we were concerned with. I didn't need a biology lesson to learn how it's done - I had other books on infertility to explain that. I didn't need a cost rundown - it varies so much, my clinic could answer those questions. After FOUR years of agonizing over whether or not to do this, this book FINALLY helped us make our decision and decide how we would handle all of the ensuing choices. I felt the authors did a great job of presenting all sides of the issue in an honest and fair way. I highly recommend it to other couples in our situation.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful info but not quite enough detail.......2002-03-27

While this book gave me an overview of the basic process of donor insemination (DI), its pitfalls and successes, I found myself wanting...more. More information, more details on exactly how it all works, why, statistics, etc. This book is, in my opinion, more focused on the emotions of dealing with infertility -- complete with little vignettes *ad nauseum* from DI parents -- the DI process and dealing with postpartum DI concerns. (While those issues are indeed important and that info useful, it wasn't really what I had expected the book to be majoratively focused on.)

For single women choosing to parent alone or for lesbian couples, you may find this book a little tiresome, as a good 90% of the language and content addresses couples and nearly every vignette/personal story (perhaps 98%) is from a DI couple. The authors are very upfront about this right in the foreword for the book, but they should perhaps be more forthcoming about that fact on the bookjacket/editorial description, as by then you've likely purchased the book. :-) In the meantime, I've ordered Single Mother by Choice (by Mattes) and have higher hopes.

5 out of 5 stars A compassionate guide.......2007-05-10

We baby boomers may have thought we were the most informed generation of all time, but no one I know was prepared to deal with aging parents. Stella's book is a gentle study of the process physically, emotionally and spiritually, full of forgiveness and gratitude along with information you can use right now. It has been extremely helpful to me and my family, and I've given "Eldercare" to many friends who share my appreciation. Thank you, Stella.

5 out of 5 stars The Eldercare Handbook.......2007-03-15

Stella Henry has answered so many important questions about how to deal with our aging parent's needs as well as our own. This is a MUST READ for every adult child with a parent that may need our help. She deals with the emotional and physical aspects for both the parent and adult child's needs. The insite into how and when to choose a care facilty is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone with aging parents.......2007-01-04

Great resource. Read it before you NEED it. But let's say you're like me, you've waited too long and you're up against a wall, it's still helpful. Get tips on the fine legal issues, get support and guidelines for decision making.

5 out of 5 stars A Straightforward, Understandable Handbook.......2006-11-11

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone facing the challenge of managing the care of their elderly loved one! Ms. Henry speaks as a professional who has also experienced this from a personal level. It is a straightforward guide written so that the layperson can easily understand. I am purchasing this handbook for my sisters to have as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Eldercare from the Heart.......2006-07-20

What an eye opener! Through this book, Stella Henry holds the hand of the reader and says, "I've been there, what you feel is normal, you can do this, and here's how." Gently, she explains the joys, challenges and pitfalls of caring for the elderly. She unfolds the changing relationships between parent and child and illuminates shifting sibling roles. Perhaps most importantly, she tells the caregiver (usually a wife, daughter, or daughter-in-law) when it may no longer be safe to care for a loved one at home--when creating a hospital at home still cannot give a loved one the care he or she needs. At the same time, she warns that not all nursing homes and assisted living facilities are created equal and that we need to become sophisticated, knowledgeable consumers in order to choose an appropriate care center. The Eldercare Handbook answered questions before I even thought of them. I have already given this book to six friends.

Book Description

The bestselling author of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy offers a powerful approach for helping troubled teens.

During his decades-long career as a therapist, Dr. William Glasser has often counseled parents and teenagers, healing shattered families and changing lives with his advice. Now, in his first book on the lessons he has learned, he asks parents to reject the "common sense" that tells them to "lay down the law" by grounding teens, or to try to coerce them into changing their behavior. These strategies have never worked, asserts Dr. Glasser, and never will. Instead he offers a different approach based upon Choice Theory.

Glasser spells out the seven deadly habits parents practice, and then shows them how to accomplish goals by changing their own behavior. Most important, however, in Unhappy Teenagers, Dr. Glasser provides a groundbreaking method that all parents can use with confidence and love to keep a strong relationship with their child.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. I can't wait to read more from this brilliant psychiatrist, and talented author.......2007-05-13

Easy to read, provides a practical approach to a very challenging problem. Offers a workable, actually enjoyable way to improve every kind of relationship, not only those with teenagers. Since reading and discussing it with my family, we hear far less shouting in our house.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource.......2004-11-06

If you are the parent of a teen who is having developmental problems of any sort, then you need this book. This book takes the essence of Choice Theory and applies it to the relationship between teens and their parents. The book consists of a number of case studies featuring the stories of typical young adults with all different sorts of problems ranging from anorexia to poor performance in school. As he is relating the story behind each case, the author will frequently turn to a brief discussion of various facets of his Choice Theory and how they apply to the case at hand.

Glasser's enlightened discussion of the Quality World concept of Choice Theory is central to the book, and how this applies to the teen's relationship with his/her parents. Coupled with this are discussions of the concepts of control and choice. Relinquishing one's control over a teen, and gently guiding them toward making better choices is another common theme running through these case studies.

My advice is, if you have a teen, or young adult, and you are experiencing some turbulence (and who does not?), buy this book, read it, underline the passages that strike you as most important (there are many), then keep this book at your side, within reaching distance, as you navigate these years. It is well worth it to be able to reach for this book in times of trouble, when your relationship with your teen or young adult seems to be deteriorating, to open a page at random, and just read. Very often, you will encounter an extremely important insight that can guide you forward.

Thank you Dr. Glasser for helping us parents to understand that the relationship is everything.

Book Description

Reading THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is like having your own personal herbalist and midwife at your side. Expertly written by Aviva Jill Romm, who has been providing family-centered natural health care for almost 20 years, it was one of the first books to explore botanical medicine and pregnancy. In this revised and updated edition, Ms. Romm thoughtfully follows the woman's journey from conception to birth, focusing on natural health. She describes herbs that can promote and maintain a healthy pregnancy (along with those you should avoid during your term) and the basics of a healthy diet, with an emphasis on natural foods. THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is a complete guide for the woman who envisions a safe pregnancy without technological intervention, as nature intended.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Women Geared Toward a Natural Pregnancy and Birth!.......2007-10-04

Aviva is able to write a book that is specific to each woman. I felt like the book was written just for me, but I know that anyone else who reads it will feel the same way. She is very supportive and has a way with making you comfortable about your pregnant body. The information in this book alone should be worth much more!!! A must have for any pregnant mama!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME !.......2007-04-04

This book is great - so much better than some of the others on the market. It offers thoughtful advise and a non-traditional approach to a health pregnancy. I love this book and refer to it almost daily during my pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars A MIDWIFE IN THE PAGES.......2007-02-13

I bought this book as soon as we found out we were pregnant and were constantly rewarded by the abundance and relevance of the information contained within. The true test of the book came unfortunately, when we miscarried at 13 weeks - it was then that the author seemed to step out of the pages and hold us to guide us through the transition of losing our first pregnancy. What a comfort and a joy to have a book that seemed to mirror our experience while supporting and advising on our path of action. She is brilliant and the book is a wonderful guide to our intrinsic knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Natural is the Best.......2007-02-11

For those wanting to research natural birth options, this is the book for you! It is very concise and thorough about all phases and steps of your pregnancy, using natural remedies and methods. I especially enjoyed the sections on nutrition and herbs. Amazing! Finally a book that doesn't just rely on medical drugs and such. And there is even an appendage in the back that instructs you on how to make your own herbal teas and tinctures, for optimal health for both you and your baby. Women have been having babies for thousands of years successfully, so I definitely think we are perfectly capable of having them in this time without medical intervention.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book you need.......2007-01-31

When I got pregnant and I wanted a natural, holistic birth I bought every book I could get my hands on on the subject. However I could have saved myself a lot of time and money with just having this one and "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" but Susan McCuatcheon.

This book is excellent for pregnancy, explaining what need to know, all the way through the birth process. My husband also read with me and it was extremely helpful and interesting for him as well.

I highly recommend this for all pregnant women who want to understand what is going on with their own bodies rather than being a passive participant in the process.

5 out of 5 stars Communication that creates connection.......2006-06-26

Would you count to three if your best friend didn't do what you asked? Ask the parent of any teenager if counting at them still works. In this powerful and practical little book, that every parent has time to read, Inbal Kashtan teaches us "another way" by brilliantly applying the practice of Nonviolent Communication to the everyday parenting struggles that tempt us to resort to coercion.
I recommend Parenting From Your Heart to all parents who are striving to move from parenting through coercion and fear to parenting through love and connection.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent parenting resource - don't miss it !!!.......2006-01-25

This little gem is filled with great practical advice and mini-worksheets that help you understand how to apply the ideas offered. I wish I would have had this from the start of my days as a parent.

If you're interested in this one then check out the companion NVC parenting title "Raising Children Compassionately" by Marshall Rosenberg.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting parents and children.......2005-03-30

This book follows the methods described in Marshall Rosenberg's book about non-violent communication. I highly recommend this book for parents even if you have not yet read the Rosenberg book. The book is short (43 pages), yet it clearly describes the application of the non-violent communication technique to communicate, motivate and develop mutually empathic relationship with your child. It is a win-win relatiohship where the feelings and the needs of both the child and the adult are met without the use of the emotional blackmail of shame, guilt, blame or rewards. Inbal Kashtan described the communication method with lots of examples and exercises after each chapter so you can practice and reinforce the method. Incorporating this simple but powerful method of communciation between a child and a parent allows the child to develop self motivation, the ability to express feelings and needs and empthatically connect to self and others even in an emotionally charged environment. Its something we all strive for and special gift that you can give and share with your child.

Book Description

Barbara Harper outlines the elements of gentle birthing: support from loved ones, a reassuring and quiet environment with soft lighting, and minimal medical intervention. She shows you how to plan a meaningful, family-centered birth experience and discusses the many alternatives available, providing a new model of maternity care that reduces the need for high-tech crisis intervention and focuses instead on preparation and good health for mother and child.

With Cesarean section rates in some hospitals at more than 50%, women are acknowledging that childbirth reform is an essential aspect of reclaiming responsibility for our bodies and our lives.

Includes information on:

•  Giving birth in a freestanding birthing center, at home, or in a hospital birthing room.

•  Finding a primary care-giver who shares your philosophy of birth, whether midwife, doctor, or both.

•  Deciding how to best use current technologies.

•  Practical advice for couples wishing to explore the option of waterbirth, a choice  that maximizes the attributes of water as a natural, pain-relieving relaxant and an alternative to drugs and their unwanted side effects.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about reclaiming birth.......2007-07-02

When I was pregnant, I read many books, wanting to explore the many options that I had. I ultimately decided on birthing in a hospital, but with a doula and a midwife. While I knew that both would work to assist me in a natural birth, I still felt unsure of whether or not *I* could handle it. Often, pregnant women are told horror stories of the pain, of how most women are "screaming" for an epidural, of what can go wrong in labor. Very rarely are gentle, beautiful birthing stories told.
For me, this is where this book comes in to play. I did not read this book looking for knowledge and factual information on birth, I'd already gleaned that from several other books. I read this book wondering if a gentle birth was truly attainable.

I read this book a few weeks before my due date. After finishing it, I truly felt at peace with my body and with my decision to pursue a natural birth. Sure, I still had my doubts, but after reading about all the women who had NCB in many different settings, I felt strongly that I could do it. And a few weeks later, I DID. Once labor began, I probably forgot everything I read, but what I didn't forget was the sense that I was just one of many women who embarked on a journey toward a gentle birth, and that if other women could do it, SO COULD I. My memories of my son's birth are gentle and peaceful, most of it spent in the water with my midwife holding my hands and my doula massaging me through contractions. My only regret is not having my husband read this book, too, as I think he was more nervous than I was. The accompanying DVD is also something I found immensly helpful. Neither my husband nor I had ever seen birth, but this DVD gave us an idea of what to expect. While it helped to calm me, it really helped my husband when I was actually in labor because he knew that what was happening was normal and natural.

Should this be the only book you read while pregnant? NO! But then, I don't think there is any one book that really covers every little piece of information about pregnancy. Do I think this is a book that should be read by every pregnant woman? Yes, I do. Perhaps if more women read this book, pregnant women would no longer be treated to horror stories about birth, and instead, would know that, in most cases, it can be a gentle, loving process.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2007-03-28

I did find this book very informative. I feel like it made me think or ask questions about why we tend to trust doctors more than our own bodies. Don't get me wrong I think doctors know very much what they are talking about most the time. But it did make sence to me how the book talked about how a normal healthy pregnancy many times is rushed or sent in for a c-section all for the sake of time. There were a few biased oppinions in the book. And some sections seemed repetative ( this is the reason for the 4 ) But I think over all it was not a waist of time. And as I do with all information I recieve it was taken with a grain of salt. Additional advice: try checking it out at the library before you decide to buy it or not. Depending on your beliefs this may or may not be the book for you.

Book Description

A woman's decision about what kind of childbirth experience she wants to have is central to her politics, identity, and personality. Today's moms and moms-to-be are better informed about their options than ever before, but, perhaps not surprisingly, they confront rigid judgment from women who choose a different path. Women who opt for home birth are criticized for being reckless—what if there's a medical emergency? Women who opt for elective C-sections are considered selfish—their life is so busy they have to schedule an appointment to give birth?

Deliver This! provides a thorough overview of today's options: home birth; birthing centers; vaginal birth in a hospital (with or without anesthetics); elective and medically necessary C-sections. Author Marisa Cohen, who delivered both her daughters in a high-tech hospital, is both engaging and curious in her quest to understand why women make alternative choices—and why they feel fiercely defensive about them. In interviews with over one hundred women, Cohen listened to the debates over the best birthing experience, and explored creative solutions that bridge seemingly conflicting goals.

Smart, appealing, and personable, Deliver This! is equally valuable for first-time moms and those who are pregnant with their second or third child.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-18

I bought this book when I was starting to think about and plan for labor. It does a great job reinforcing that a successful birth is one that results in a healthy baby. I had been reading books on natural child birth and so many of them seem to have the bias that a medicated birth or a C-section is a lesser experience.

Reading this book prepared me to expect the unexpected during labor and to not feel bad for asking for drugs or feel devastated in the event of a C-section.

The personal stories from women who have had babies all sorts of ways are a great resource when one is sorting through all the material out there.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy Your Baby's Birth and Do it YOUR Way........2007-05-01

Confused when friends tell you to "..just get the epidural as soon as you can.." while others are ecstatic over their "orgasmic" natural births? This book helps you sort out your options by using witty, judgement-free story telling as well as examining how and why women make the choices they make. Deliver This! is the perfect example of presuming that every woman is smart enough to follow her heart, gather the information or stories she needs to make her decision, and then decide what is best for her and her family. Marisa Cohen is an excellent writer and is able to take a values and judgement-laden topic and deliver her information without, well, values and judgement. Nice wit and humor as well. Fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars Great, informative read.......2007-02-07

I'm not even expecting, but I thought this book was a great read. My husband and I are at the point of figuring out when to have a child, and a friend loaned us Marisa Cohen's book, "Deliver This." It sure opened my eyes to the world of birthing! I had no idea how many options were out there, and it was interesting to read from all different perspectives. I also enjoyed the writing of Marisa Cohen -- easy to read, easy to relate to. The closer we get to deciding when to have a child, I'm going to re-read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and reassuring.......2007-01-14

Since I am expecting, I figured I should figure out how I want labor to go. As far as I could find, this was the only book out there on childbirth options. The book was funny, I esp. enjoyed when the author told us she hissed like a demon at her husband before she got the epidural. She educates you about the options - the arguments for and against the options and reasures you that all will be ok. She also gives helpful tips about how and what to discuss with your Doctor, midwife, doula, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative - covers ALL the options without judgement.......2007-01-12

My wife and I are expecting twins this spring so we both read Marisa Cohen's book and found it extremely informative and engagingly written. There's really nothing else like it out there. And now I even know what a post-partum doula is! I will be miles ahead of all the other fathers-to-be at child birth class. Whatever decision my wife makes for her delivery, Ms. Cohen has given us the real scoop on all the available options, from all-natural home birth to elective C-section, and everything in between.
