When doctor and author Rachel Naomi Remen (Kitchen Table Wisdom) was young, she was caught between two different views of life: that of her rabbi grandfather and that of her highly academic, research-oriented parents, who believed religion was the opiate of the masses. As Remen gravitated toward academics and serving the world as a medical doctor, her grandfather became an "island of mysticism in a vast sea of science." But over time, Remen discovered that two seemingly divergent paths could lead to the same destination, especially as she learned to blend her spiritual beliefs with her medical treatment.
Remen uses the heart-rending stories of her patients to teach readers how to follow in her example, that is, combining a life of service with a life of receiving and giving blessings (a combination that avoids common problems such as burnout, self-sacrifice, and navel gazing). Remen also includes personal stories of her grandfather, who showered the world with his mystical beliefs and wizened blessings. While this story-by-story structure is similar to the bestselling Kitchen Table Wisdom, it is still a tearful and satisfying formula. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.
There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.
Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

A truly inspirational book!.......2007-10-11
I was deeply moved and inspired by this book. I bought 3 more copies and gave them to friends and family.
Beautiful.......2007-09-24
I love this book - it's absolutely beautiful. The stories can help you grow. I would recommend this treasure to anyone.
A Blessing to Read.......2007-09-14
Easy to Read, Much food for thought.....Life lessons for all of us to learn and use. Short chapters with a new theme in each. Can read short snippets at a time.
A Blessing In Itself.......2007-07-22
I feel bad. Apparently, I'm only the 6th person out of 47 people to give this book anything less than a 5-star rating. And there's only one reason I did that. As a writer myself, I feel that there are too many stories in this book. Some of these little narratives just aren't as powerful or focused as others. And I would have left them out. But please don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment of this wonderful work. It is every bit as inspiring, uplifting, and profound as most of the other reviewers say it is. I especially like the common theme I see running through most of the pieces presented here. And that's the idea that the wholeness of an individual not only includes his or her health, talents and accomplishments, but his or her pain, suffering, shortcomings, and illnesses, too. In life we are called to embrace it all, and resist nothing. And that is the key to a life that is truly fulfilling and rewarding.
Steven Lane Taylor, author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow
One not to be missed.......2007-05-19
I have found My Grandfather's Blessings to be among the most moving books I have ever read. Each brief story can stand on its own. The author relates a simple incident, as many of us have lived, but then goes on in a simple and succinct manner to reveal a deeper meaning within the experience. Ms. Remen does not talk down to the reader, but rather sweeps us up into the experience with her. Upon finishing this book, I immediately ordered five more and sent them out to friends.

Abba's Child by Brannon Manning.......2007-09-19
This book has been such a blessing to my life. It has helped me know God's love for me and His awesome grace and reconciliation. I have read it at least twenty times and get something new every time as it challenges me to believe in ways that do not seem natural for me. I have shared this book with numerous others and most of them have told me that it has had a major impact on the way they see God the Father now. I can not recommend this book enough. Jack deFluiter
A Must Read.......2007-08-02
If you ever wondered why you behave or react to things the way you do this is a excellent book to help you understand why and how you got that way. I wish I had read something like this 30 years ago.
Once Again, Brennan Manning delivers!.......2007-06-03
I have to admit that I was skeptical in beginning this book. Could this really measure up to 'Ragamuffin Gospel'? Or would I be left disappointed? Surprisingly, I was not at all disappointed. In fact, I would even go as far as to say this book surpasses "Ragamuffin Gospel!" Manning beautifully describes the intense and fierce love of Jesus for us, and states the necessity of teaching the Church today this truth. I recommend, like Manning, to read this book slowly, meditatively, and prayerfully.
Abba's Child - Balancing the Criticisms.......2007-05-23
"Abba's Child" is, in my opinion, the quintessential Brennan Manning, though I recognize some may feel that is not necessarily a positive. I do understand and give merit to a few of the criticisms, especially of his use of Merton. However, I believe that Manning is writing here to a very real and very deep spiritual need, foundational to most other understanding of God. Something that Merton, regardless of other points of personal conviction and practice, understood well--something that many would-be theologians often overlook. Lest we forget, the Apostle Paul (likely educated under a Greco-Roman system as well as in Jewish theology) was a master and proponent of using secular philosophy and non-Christian religious writings to illustrate his points and to share the truth of Christ's love. If I am not mistaken, his contemporaries were critical of him for the same reasons many today are critical of Manning. Paul's use of what amounted to first century pop-psychology and non-Judeo-Christian philosophical elements did not, in any way, compromise the truth of his message. He used these things to illustrate truth in relevant and engaging ways; to break through cultural and intellectual barriers; and to single out truth.
So I say, before you make your case, test Manning. Test the truth, gentleness--the audacity of Father's love. Meditate on it. Take it in. Not necessarily following Manning's personal path, but certainly exploring some of the ways he suggests one might... can... should discover such love in truth. There is one way to God, through Jesus. But biblically speaking, I believe there were many ways in which people made their way to Jesus. Manning eloquently, passionately, poignantly speaks to the barriers that have kept many from Him.
By the way, "Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a student adaptation of "Abba's Child." While, in general, I am not a fan of audience adapted works, I found it to be equally as powerful-- not the least watered or dumbed down.
Great book.......2007-05-21
I have read nearly all of Brennan Manning's books. This is a great book about grace in our lives. It is definitely a good read.

Book Description
Building on the success of SarahÂ's previous books, Moving On expresses a new-age inclusiveness that allows people of all faiths and belief systems to enjoy her positive outlook on life.
Inspired by her own life experiences and requested by avid Ban Breathnach readers eager for another volume, Sarah helps readers to understand themselves and to use those insights to create a home that truly suits their spirits and their lives.
"We do not know how to move on," Sarah observes. "We have learned to let go, but not move on." This keen insight differentiates this book from other self-help books dealing with life changes.
Sarah helps readers cope with what she calls, "the myriad demands of uprooting oneÂ's life," and teaches them to not only move, but to finally create what she calls, "your own house of belonging."
Like the other books in SarahÂ's acclaimed Simple Abundance series, Moving On is what Sarah calls "part meditation, how-to-manual, and memoir."

A GREAT READ.......2007-09-10
Dear reader, I suggest you sit down with a cup of tea and get cozy --- this is the kind of read that will inspire you to make changes that will support and sustain as you move through life. Well done, Sarah. You've presented a very important, inspirational road map, especially for baby boomer women who are getting ready to clear out and move forward. Pamela D. Blair, Author, The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond
NOT Simple Abundance!.......2007-09-02
I LOVED Simple Abundance, but I just could not get into this book. I tried (repeatedly) to connect, yet the contents fell short. Too contrite, too flowery, too, too, too... Maybe it's me. Perhaps I have changed since 1996!
Moving On (book by Sarah Ban Breathnach).......2007-08-27
This book was about the authors life journey and what she has learned along the way. She is very well read and a great writer. Full of terrific quotes from a wide range of individuals.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-08-05
Fabulous memoir of SBB's life after Simple Abundance came out. I am a huge fan of hers and I could not put this book down until I was finished. Written with her usual dynamic playful use of words, Sarah fed my mind, body and spirit. I absolutely LOVE this book!! Get it!
There is a lot to love about this book...........2007-07-07
There were lots of aspects of this title that I adored -
I completely appreciated the idea of making my home one of my "sacred partners" - something that would shift so much of how I perceive this place I live. This was a powerful moment in the reading and really worth everything else - it is not that the everything else isn't quality, for the most part it is - but I was thinking if I bought the book to help me reorganize - the "how-to's" I would be at a loss.
It give sthe inspiration, it gives insights into the psyche and soul, but is lacking in some of the core nuts-and-bolts that would have made this into a five star book. Her spirit definitely gives the book soul, which makes me wish there was a half-star category or something.
I think her idea for a "house scrapbook"... a "scrapbook of home desires" is a good one, but for someone like me it might create more of a block than inspire action. It took me several years, for example, to paint a room because I thought I had to have the perfect ceilign fan, first. I know, weird, and I know, true. I can also see myself getting cluttered with all the "stuff" in such a notebook to the point of getting zero done.
There are prayers and quotes and lots of references.
It is easy to read, inspiring. I know I would like to have a home that is truly a sacred partner. After reading this book, I feel like Sarah believes in me doing just that... which I hope I can do without the scrapbook.

AMAZING!!.......2003-11-16
I was required to read this book for an intercultural communications class in college. Upon completion, I am now a communications major, and have completely changed my outlook on life. This is one of the best books I have ever read, but you have to have a open mind about the topics being discussed. It is definately thought provoking. This is not a text book, but a collection of stories about instances in peoples lives. I highly recommend it.

House of Belonging.......2007-07-22
This is a beautiful and personal book of poetry that explores the different people and places to which the poet feels a connection. He mixes metaphor, references to stories in literature and clear descriptions of events and feelings to poignantly communicate the way people and places have touched his heart.
I am alienated by poetry that is dense and too complicated to grasp on a first read. This poetry is opposite of that, I find it clear, accessible and moving.
His Poetry Makes Me Aware Of Myself.......2007-06-15
A few weeks ago I started listening to David Whyte's Clear Mind Wild Heart. I kept having to stop the playback to think about what he said, and rewind to hear parts again. At times I realized I had already heard one of the six CD's but it had so much depth in it that it was like listening to a new CD.
Naturally I wanted to read a book of his poetry (he'd read many of his poems in the CD's). I was not disappointed. Even having heard them, reading them to myself I was surprised that he crystallized and spoke what I was thinking and feeling, seemingly knowing it better than I myself.
As the title would suggest its predominant theme is belonging, and of coming to feel belonging by coming to recognize yourself, or the struggle to recognize yourself. His method is not to be obscure but to be observant and put that into language that you ... well I have a quote of his that says, "Poetry is the art of creating language against which there is no defense." He does just that. I am coming to understand more and more how he believes we must all set aside time to write, mediate, pray, or read poetry. They are all variations on the theme of observing who we are, the world around us, and how we can belong in that world and in our own skins. If you are on the journey to find belonging I'd whole heartily recommend the couple hours it takes to read this poetry.
House of Belonging.......2006-04-07
David Whyte has written a book that I can curl up in. The House of Belonging is so full of things I understand that I wonder that I didn't write it myself. But I don't have the gift to reach people in that way. Whyte has this gift. If you love Mary Oliver's poetry I think you'll be very pleased you picked this up for yourself.
Work that lacks the murky qualities of much poetry.......2005-01-17
We owe a debt of gratitude to David Whyte for work which lacks the obscure, murky, digressive qualities often associated with poetry and which are responsible for turning large segments of the reading public away from quality literature.
He writes with exquisite simplicity about life's monumental concerns: love, creativity, aloneness, beauty. These are the very things which, by virtue of their universality, should be easily perceptible, but which we have made endlessly complicated.
There is a pervasive, Zen-like aspect to Mr. Whyte's work. By following him back to the wild Yorkshire moors of his youth and forward to the vast potential of the land he adopted in adulthood, we are reminded to take note of each moment, to pay heed to even the most mundane articles of daily existence --- bees, trees, daisies, dishes, kettles --- because they are all facets of the ever-changing whole that is each life.
Whether dealing with the fullness of nature's many moods, or the long search for a special connection with another human being, his poems each hold at their core a lustrous pearl of truth.
He speaks to a generation now learning to accept the difficult, i.e., that not all dreams are possible but that new hopes can rise to take their place, that there is a continuance of life after what one believed to be an `only' love, and that solitude can be a genesis site for constructive activity, realization and joy.
Truly wonderful, inspiring.......2004-06-24
This is one of my favorite books of poetry -- ever. Like many other reviewers have noted here, Whyte's poetry lacks that murky and inaccessible quality that so many modern poets seem to strive for, as if they DON'T want us to "get" what they are trying to say. Whyte's poetry, on the other hand, is accessible without being simplistic. These poems celebrate the art and craft of a careful writer and a deeply thoughtful soul -- and they invite us inside. I love this stuff.

Book Description
Despite its centrality to the political life of India and Pakistan, Kashmir has met with rather perfunctory treatment from historians of South Asia. The few works of history and politics that have appeared on this region, moreover, insist on defining Kashmiri culture, history, and identity in
terms of the ahistorical concept of Kashmiriyat, or a uniquely Kashmiri cultural identity. This book, in contrast, questions the notion of any transcendent cultural uniqueness and Kashmiriyat by returning Kashmir to the mainstream of South Asian historiography. It examines the hundred-year impact of
indirect colonial rule on Kashmirs class formation. It studies the uses (and abuses) made of Kashmirs political elites by the state. It looks at the responses of Kashmirs society to social and economic restructuring. It shows that while all these historical changes had a profound impact on the
political culture of the Kashmir Valley, there is nothing very inevitable or quite definite about the 'political regionalism' and 'Islamic particularism' of this area. Using local language sources and every important archive, this major history of the formation of Kashmir shows precisely how the
Kashmir Valley assumed the position it has come to occupy in postcolonial South Asia.
Customer Reviews:
Deeply flawed analysis of recent Kashmir history.......2006-07-27
To understand the `making of Kashmir', it is important to discover the spirit and soul of this land with a history going back thousands of years.A scholar concerned with only a fragment of this long history must still take a holistic perspective in order to identify the unique character of the land. This book is a scholarly study of a relatively recent period in the history of Kashmir(1846-1953),the period of Dogra rule An overall perspective has not been provided and the reader has no opportunity to understand even the bare essentials of Hindu,Buddhist , Islamic and Sikh periods . Zutshi has glossed over or ignored evidence supporting the rich tradition of tolerance and mutual respect between Hindus and Muslims which survived several periods of persecution of the Kashmir Pandit minority.Based partly on unreliable sources and partly on flawed interpretation, Zutshi has made sweeping ,unresearched statements about the post-1953 period which is,in any case, outside the scope of the project.Consequently,a strong bias in favour of minority separatists permeates the book.

Book Description
Linking key debates about citizenship with discussions about migration and ethnicity, Citizenship and Migration examines the new challenges globalization is creating throughout the world. As boundaries are being blurred and nation-state powers eroded, millions of people have multiple citizenship and millions more lack citizenship of their country of residence. Increasing numbers of citizens do not "belong," thus undermining the national state as the central site of democracy. Particularly attentive to the impact of globalization on the conventional, legal definitions of citizenship, this study also recognizes that global integration has unleashed strong forces of multiculturalism.

For all those who have felt the tug of memory or a connection to some time and place that came before, this book explores the depths of one's connections to ancestors, to the land, to the mysteries of life. Continuing with themes from his first book, The Mist-Filled Path, the author brings readers along as he journeys to Ireland for a shamanic conference and shares his experiences and how they tie in to the meanings of Celtic traditions. Readers recognize connections to other spiritual traditions and shamanic teachings of other indigenous peoples. They also discover ways to reconnect with their own heritage and to cull the good teachings and incorporate them into their personal spiritual practices. Offering evocative writing, a fresh look at ancient ideas, practical exercises, and guided meditations, the book makes a perfect entry point for readers seeking shamanic wisdom and guidance.
Customer Reviews:
The Spiral Speaks.......2006-10-27
How rare it is to discover the voice of the Ancient Ones in modern writing. Truelly this is a book to reread and nurture over and over as your heart awakens from its own dreaming. I especially enjoyed the three segments as spirals of initiation for those called to the path of Celtic shamanism. My own experiences resonate with MacEowens as I too have walked backwards in time to remember from where I came. We are the ones we have been waiting for and may the Clan awaken globally.
Recently I have also read a book that has similiar energy and she too has some very amazing experiences from the days of old. Eclipse of Fate...my healing journey through past-life recall written by Barbara Burritt echoes the voices of ancient mysteries. Try it as well as Franks first book, The Mist-filled Path. Waiting to read your next one Mr. MacEowen!
An On-Going Journey.......2006-03-21
As someone who has some basic experience with shamanism, I find Frank's second book a most enjoyable and informative read. He takes us further along his personal journey and shares his well-researched material in a practical manner that we can easily integrate into our own practises and beliefs, whatever they may be. He has inspired me once again to explore my own Celtic Scotish shamanic heritage.
A wonderful spiritual journey!.......2005-07-21
I would like to recommend this wonderful book on Celtic Shamanism. The Spiral of Memory and Belonging is a journey of the soul, and our connection with the earth and spirit realms that our ancestors were attuned to.
There are exercises in here to help you get in touch with your ancestors, and explanations as to what a shaman really is. This book really opened my eyes to the Otherworld.
I bought this book to help me to understand the ancient tribes of Scotland. I found that and much more. I discovered my own hidden spirituality. It was a very inspirational book for me and written in a poetic style that made it a joy to read.
Compelling.......2005-06-16
The Spiral of Memory and Belonging is a good book but it is not a great book by any means. I was at first riveted and then the fire died down as the author plunged into fluff and repetition without going anywhere. Then the book redeemed itself at the discussion of the three spirals. I was slightly taken aback at the description of the downward spiral. I believe there are many reasons why someone could head downward. The threshold and upward spiral were also useful. I found the section on healing family/ancestral wounds also pertinent. Although I wanted more. I think the author has experienced much more and has a LOT to offer but this book only hints at it. Definitely worthwhile reading for anyone new to shamantic practise but it is still vague and full of fluff for those familiar with these experiences.
the spiral in terms of energy work.......2005-05-25
I am a reiki master. As I started reading this book I was struck by the simularities between Dana energy and Reiki energy. I believe them to be the same. This book explained some of the imagery in my initiation visions. It is a great book for energy workers and those who are begining or in the process of shamanic initiations. This book is more profound than his first book. It is more on am intermediate level. I strongly recomend it and for those more interested in Dana energies I recomend Reiki

Book Description
Veteran activist Mab Segrest takes readers along on her travels to view a world experiencing extraordinary change. As she moves from place to place, she speculates on the effects of globalization and urban development on individuals, examines the struggles for racial, economic, and sexual equality, and narrates her own history as a lesbian in the American South. From the principle that we all belong to the human community, Segrest uses her personal experience as a filter for larger political and cultural issues. Her writings bring together such groups as the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina, fledging gay rights activists in Zimbabwe, and resistance fighters in El Salvador. Segrest expertly plumbs her own personal experiences for organizing principles and maxims to combat racism, homophobia, sexism, and economic exploitation.
