Book Description

The infant management concepts presented in this book have found favor with over two million parents and twice as many contented babies. On Becoming Babywise brings hope to the tired and bewildered parents looking for an alternative to sleepless nights and fussy babies. The Babywise Parent Directed Feeding concept has enough structure to bring security and order to your baby's world, yet enough flexibility to give mom freedom to respond to any need at any time. It teaches parents how to lovingly guide their baby's day rather than be guided or enslaved to the infant's unknown needs. The information contained within On Becoming Babywise is loaded with success. Comprehensive breast-feeding follow-up surveys spanning three countries, of mothers using the PDF method verify that as a result of the PDF concepts, 88% breast-feed, compared to the national average of only 54% (from the National Center for Health Statistics). Of these breast-feeding mothers, 80% of them breast-feed exclusively without a formula complement. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The mean average time of breast-feeding for PDF moms is 33 1/2 weeks, well above the national average. Over 50% of PDF mothers extend their breast-feeding toward and well into the first year. Added to these statistics is another critical factor. The average breast-fed PDF baby sleeps continuously through night seven to eight hours between weeks seven and nine. Healthy sleep in infants is analogous to healthy growth and development. Find out for yourself why a world of parents and pediatricians utilize the concepts found in On Becoming Babywise.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous and manipulative.......2007-10-16

I bought the book, I read the book, I threw it in the trash.

When my son was born I followed his cues and fed him when he was hungry. Over the next month I could see a sleeping and feeding pattern emerge. He ate and slept at around the same time every day, within the hour, and that was fine with me.

My sister-in-law used Baby Wise with her son, born a few months before my son. She was so hung up on keeping him on a schedule that when mealtime came around he was famished, and would suck down his formula so fast that she would have to give him more. At two weeks old he was taking six oz. of formula - the dr. had to tell her to cut back. By two months old he was enormous and has been ever since. Before a year old he was wearing a size 5 diaper - and no, there are no giants in our family. I'm not talking bone structure, I'm talking fat. So please take note that this method can also result in over-eating.

Certainly it is important to learn to distinguish hunger cues from other types of behavior. The book says to feed your baby when he's hungry, but at the same time emphasizes and reiterates the importance of a feeding schedule. If you are following hunger cues then you should not be worried about watching the clock.

The language of this book is manipulative. The authors present scenarios of a baby fed on demand and a baby fed using the Babywise method. Of course the on-demand baby spiraled into misery while the Baby-wise baby slept all night and bonded with her family. The authors give no evidence to back up the claims they make in the book.

Do yourself a favor and follow the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, or books such as the "What to Expect" series which follow AAP guidelines. Anyone can print their own book making any claim, as these guys have done.

1 out of 5 stars God gave you instincts - trust them not a book.......2007-10-15

Like many first moms looking for a plan to care for this new life, I read this book over and over, before my child was born - and after. I knew of the controversy that surrounded it, and was comfortable to follow the book anyway. I asked many moms who followed this book for advice and did follow it for a time. Our son is now 7 months old, and I feel compelled to write a review, even though I have never done so for any book in the past. There are some good ideas in this book, but my best days came after I finally put the book aside and learned to parent my baby by trusting my God-given instincts. Ask yourself this question: is getting your baby to sleep through the night the main goal of parenting an infant? If so, give it a try. My son did sleep "through the night" as defined in the book by 8 weeks by not following the plan, but his own cues. I found, though, that concentrating on that aspect of his development as baby-wise subtly proposes really distracts from the blessing of enjoying the miracle of a baby. Consider what other goals of parenting an infant you might have. The author of this book refused to be held accountable by his church for his parenting books and course, and therefore the church has released a public statement about not supporting this book, stating their concerns with the material. Look it up first! There are also many former teachers of this material who now publicly voice opposition to the methods after having a child that it didn't work with. Find out why! From my experience, parents with easy babies do use this and have much success. There is nothing wrong with that! Schedules are great. If your baby is not a 'text book baby,' enjoy him/her and relax while he/she develops. Don't miss out on those precious first weeks and months by trying to squeeze him into a mold. I read at least 7 books about babies and sleep from all ends of the spectrum, and it seems that there are some developmental problems with baby wise. We have let our baby cry at times to learn to settle himself - once he was old enough to understand cause and effect (an important developmental necessity). I believe that it should only take a couple times if the baby is developmentally ready, not weeks and weeks. (And our baby was colicky!) Some babies do not have self-soothing skills until 4 months old. (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child). I did find that feeding on a schedule was helpful, but our baby really was hungry after 2 - 2 1/2 hours. We did not feed at every cry, but did feed when he was hungry. So all of Ezzo's ideas are not crazy, but there are good reasons why Focus on the Family, the American Academy of Pediatrics, his own home church, and many other sources do not support this as a parent guide. Do your research first. But first and foremost, enjoy your newborn and do not confuse the process with this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book should be burned.......2007-10-14

Babies have died from parents following the advice of this godforsaken book. It is awful and a selfish way to raise your baby. DO NOT buy this book. Follow your instincts, trust your gut - feed your baby when it is hungry, sleep with it, she or he will grow up secure and healthy.

I wanted to give this zero stars but that was not an option. If you see this book at your bookstore, ask them not to carry it. If you see it at the library - mis-shelve it or better yet - throw it out!!!

'Babywise' advice linked to dehydration, failure to thrive
Matthew Aney M.D.

Expectant parents often fear the changes a new baby will bring, especially sleepless nights. What new parent wouldn't want a how-to book that promises their baby will be sleeping through the night by three to eight weeks?

One such book, On Becoming Babywise, has raised concern among pediatricians because it outlines an infant feeding program that has been associated with failure to thrive (FTT), poor milk supply failure, and involuntary early weaning. A Forsyth Medical Hospital Review Committee, in Winston-Salem N.C., has listed 11 areas in which the program is inadequately supported by conventional medical practice. The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County, Calif., stated its concern after physicians called them with reports of dehydration, slow growth and development, and FTT associated with the program. And on Feb. 8, AAP District IV passed a resolution asking the Academy to investigate "Babywise," determine the extent of its effects on infant health and alert its members, other organizations and parents of its findings.

1 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2007-10-08

This book and it's theories is definitely not for everyone. In fact, my wife and I have yet to find anyone who has tried it and been succesful with their child because of it. For some babies what this book recommends will work very well but for many others, such as my daughter it will only result in a lot of tears and frustration. The recommendations in this book are very inflexible. The theories make sense only if you assume that every baby has the same requirements for sleeping and eating. As adults we don't all have the requirements or follow the same cycles, so why should babies?

What we ended up doing is trying to follow a routine of eating, followed by playing and then sleeping as the book recommends but using cues from our daughter to determine when she eats and sleeps. Our daughter has her own internal cycle and by following it rather than the clock she has been a much happier baby.

Since its publication in 1942, The Runaway Bunny has never been out of print. Generations of sleepy children and grateful parents have loved the classics of Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd, including Goodnight Moon. The Runaway Bunny begins with a young bunny who decides to run away: "'If you run away,' said his mother, 'I will run after you. For you are my little bunny.'" And so begins a delightful, imaginary game of chase. No matter how many forms the little bunny takes--a fish in a stream, a crocus in a hidden garden, a rock on a mountain--his steadfast, adoring, protective mother finds a way of retrieving him. The soothing rhythm of the bunny banter--along with the surreal, dream-like pictures--never fail to infuse young readers with a complete sense of security and peace. For any small child who has toyed with the idea of running away or testing the strength of Mom's love, this old favorite will comfort and reassure. (Baby to preschool)

Book Description

Clement Hurd redrew some of his pictures for this new edition of the profoundly comforting story of a bunny's imaginary game of hide-and-seek and the lovingly steadfast mother who finds him every time.

5 out of 5 stars How strong is a mothers love?.......2007-09-18

A sweet tale, that reaches to illustrate that uniquely elusive bond between mother and child. It's just this type of love that promotes meaning and purpose into the lives of our children. A must read! It will surely tug on your heart-strings! Author/Illustrator

5 out of 5 stars profound and solid expression of parental love.......2007-09-12

Enchanting and delightful expression of the devotion of motherhood, and a gentle answer to something every child at one point says they will do "I'm going to run away!" And this is the point.....at some stage children discover and become more deeply aware that they are separate beings from their closest family, and this is both a frightening and inspiring idea. Even today our own political debates on libertarian verses communitarian policies is but this idea write large. And yet in "Runaway Bunny" this idea is not writ small...for the Mother Bunny always replies "if you run away, I will become...." Acknowledging the child's growing ability and independence, but also expressing devotion, attention, and care.

Margaret Wise Brown is an unacknowledged genius of American letters and child psychology and I highly recommend her works, and especially Runaway Bunny.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for kids!.......2007-08-26

This is a wonderful story for the whole family. My son loved this book when he was little, and our daughter now enjoys it too. We love reading it because of the beautiful story.

5 out of 5 stars The Runaway Bunny.......2007-07-29

This is a favorite of mine. If you are religious, this book is similar to Psalm 139 in Hebrew Scriptures. For that reason I am very fond of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A story every child deserves to be told, with wonderful images, and in perfect size.......2007-06-08

I bought this book for my son when he just over a year old. I read to him ever since he was born, and he loves books.

This book is a good size for small hands, and very resistant for toddlers due to the cardboard pages. I was always able to let him hold it because of that, without having to tell him to be careful with it. And because of the beautiful and colorful pictures that the book has on every other page, he has always been inclined to take the book himself.

The story itself is beautiful. It speaks of a little bunny at a "silly" age, where he tells his mother all the things he will do to get away from her. The mother answers each of these "ideas" to run away, lovingly and patiently, telling him HOW she will always run after him, no matter what. The last idea that the bunny has "gets him caught", and he then gives up the thought of running away. The mother's reaction to this is to warmly welcome him back with a homely gesture that is to give him a snack.

My son was first drawn to the book by the pictures and the rhythm of the words... and well, he has always loved the "bunny" and "mommy" voices that one can make while reading it aloud. But now that he is almost three, he tells ME the whole story, and starts to giggle when we get to the page where the bunny gets caught. He loves it when I hold him in my arms and start tickling and kissing him at that point.

This is definitely his favorite bedtime book.

It's a book that has helped strengthen the mother-son bond in my family. It also teaches both mommy and son, if you read between the lines: unconditional love and patience.

I already have my older son's copy, but when I have my second son/daughter, I will get him/her a copy of their own. It's a book that belongs on a night table, and that every child deserves to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this book, if you love your child.......2007-10-09

This author wants parents to ignore all instincts and for women to ignore their maternal instincts (i.e., nursing on demand, nurturing your child as they need to be and picking up on child's cues to nurse and be held). This book is all about how to force babies to adapt to parents lives pre-parenthood, without asking parents to adapt to their babies. I think this is an unfortunate book and dangerous to children and parents everywhere. Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Babies are not animals.......2007-10-09

This kind of "baby training" makes me sick. Babies are PEOPLE, not animals who need to be trained like dogs. They know when they're hungry, they know when they're tired, and they know when they need to be comforted. A sweet little baby spends 9 months nestled inside the warmth of his mother's body. We shouldn't expect a baby to come straight out of the womb and immediately adjust to sleeping in a cold, hard crib away from his mama. When a baby is "crying it out," the only thing she is learning is that she has to depend on herself for comfort because she can't trust anyone to come help her.

People who are considering buying this book should do themselves a big favor and buy some Alfie Kohn books instead. Search "attachment parenting" here on Amazon, and you'll find some worthwhile reading material that will benefit you AND your baby.

I bought the book, I read the book, I threw it in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2007-10-07

I have seen lots of negative publicity regarding the BabyWise books that are unwarranted. The book does not tell you to only feed your baby at certain times and ignore the crying, nor does it tell you to leave your baby in a playpen for an hour at a time. What the book does tell you - is to feed on a "schedule" BUT to also be watchful of cues from your baby that they require more feedings (ex/ # of pee/poo diapers). It also tells you to introduce the playpen for 10-15 minutes at a time, 2 times a day - gradually increasing the time to what you feel comfortable with. The book helps you see the common sense in parenting. It is great! I got lots of huffs from people who didn't agree with what I was doing but anyone who meets my daughter says that she is one of the happiest and most contented babies ever. My baby is about to turn a year this month and has done awesome under the philosophies I used from BabyWise I and II. My pediatrician (who didn't know that I was doing BabyWise) said that I was doing a great job with my daughter. Read the book for yourself and decide if it is what you want to do - it is worth it to look into!

2 out of 5 stars Should be a pamphlet, not a book.......2007-09-26

Babywise offers some useful advice, but Ezzo shoots himself in the foot with his arrogant, negative, manipulative tone.

I had to force myself to finish reading this book so that I could write a complete review. I lost patience within the first 50 pages; the author spends as much time and effort railing on attachment parenting as he does explaining and defending his own theory. He blames attachment parenting for almost every problem in society: obesity, learning disabilities, even postpartum depression and child abuse. His hatred of this parenting method seems totally irrational, and oftentimes he doesn't even have his facts straight. He repeatedly asserts that attachment parenting is rooted in Freud's birth trauma theory, but I have read a great deal about it and have never come across anything mentioning to Freud or birth trauma.

Ezzo calls carrying one's child in a sling an "extreme" behavior. He spends a paragraph arguing for circumcision with incorrect and unreferenced "research." His comparisons between "Chelsea," a baby raised on the babywise method and "Marisa," a baby raised on attachment parenting's principles, are so exaggerated that I couldn't take them seriously. Clearly not all attachment-based children turn out like the nightmare child Marisa- if they did, attachment parenting would have disappeared long ago.

The book is also poorly edited. I found numerous spelling and punctuation errors, not to mention common typos. Not only does Ezzo lack any real credentials, but he also didn't bother hiring even a freshman English major to check his writing for common errors.

If you choose to buy and read this book, keep in mind the fact that you will just be reading 211 pages of some guy's opinion. Ezzo is not a doctor, nor a qualified childcare expert of any kind. If he would have left out his ultraconservative, arrogant views and simply published the essence of the babywise method, this book would be 50 pages long and maybe a worthwhile read.

Book Description

The Story of the World CD audiobook is a collaboration between Jim Weiss, whose voice is "liquid gold" (CNN TV), and Susan Wise Bauer, whose writing has been described as "timeless and intelligent" (Publishers Weekly). These spirited readings of the last volume in Bauer's history series bring to life the stories and records of human history from ancient times to the present.

Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, this volume of the popular Story of the World series weaves world history into a storybook format. The fourth volume covers the major historical events of the last 150 years, from the American Civil War to the presidency of Nelson Mandela.

This audio CD edition may be used along with the print books, as a supplement to a traditional history curriculum, or independently. 11 audio CDs.

Theologian Gary Ezzo and pediatrician Dr. Robert Bucknam set off cries of alarm in their highly controversial 1995 publication On Becoming Baby Wise by arguing that some crying is natural and healthy for babies. In this updated edition, Ezzo and Bucknam present a comprehensive method to encourage a full night's sleep for the seven- to nine-week-old baby. It's easy to read, easy to follow, supported by research and by testimonials from parents and pediatricians, and includes suggestions for making the process fit into the reader's lifestyle. The authors believe a consistent sleep routine leads to happier, more responsible, and better-adjusted children. But a full night's sleep is just the short-term goal. The long-term goal is training parents to bring order and stability to their families through nurturing the marriage, providing a loving structure for one's children, and allowing flexibility in the process.

Twelve chapters cover feeding philosophies, monitoring baby's growth, establishing baby's routine, handling multiple births, and the ever-controversial chapter on when baby cries. The 52-week method involves four phases, beginning with "Stabilization" from birth to week 8. During weeks 9 through 15 ("Extended Night"), babies learn to sleep through the night. Ezzo and Bucknam attempt to teach the difference between a baby's many cries and advise parents on various responses to these cries. Critics dislike Ezzo's strong belief that "child-centered parenting" (feeding baby whenever it cries, sleeping with and "wearing" baby) fosters demanding, insecure toddlers. But for parents who are tired of being tired--or whose previous experience with child-centered parenting supports Ezzo's theory--it may be worth a read. --Liane Thomas

4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read .......2007-09-12

I've been following the BabyWise methods for the past 5 days, and last night my 6 week old infant slept 9 hours straight. He had been waking 1-2 times a night up until then. I don't know if it's just coincidence, or the BabyWise schedule, but I'm happy. If you are not willing to let your baby cry, and don't mind having your daily schedule dictated by your baby, this book is not for you. I lived that way for 6 weeks and it didn't work for me. This book has offered my family consistency and predictability in our daily routine. The book does not advocate letting your baby go hungry, nor is it anti-breast feeding. It simply offers a guide for how to get your baby on a "somewhat" predictable schedule, with the added benefit of good sleeping habits. Hundreds of people have given this book positive reviews based on the fact that the advice worked for them, and I don't think any of those people starved their babies!

1 out of 5 stars not helpful.......2007-08-18

Although this book was recommended to me by my peds Dr., Baby Wise did me absolutely no good! I got it because at 4 months, my child was still waking up every two hours. The first thing I read was that I was a horrible mother because my child, unlike the 96% of normal babies, was not sleeping for 8 hours straight in the first weeks of his life. I tried really hard to use the strategies in the book, but after almost a month, his sleeping patterns were worse, and I was exhausted. We resorted to crying it out (which worked like a charm). I wish I had not wasted my time with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mom with experience.......2007-07-20

I am looking at rebuying this book now that I am expecting my 4th child. I had 2 children with whom I read and followed the advice of Dr William Sears. By the time the second child was 6 months old I was a nervous wreck and had not had a full night's sleep in over 2 years. It led to complete insomnia which took me a year to break the cycle. When planning our third child my only reservation was handling sleep deprivation again. I knew I could not go through such a dark period again while being mom to 3 small children. I was very skeptical of this book but decided to give it a try. My baby was extremely happy during this time. He and I both were able to sleep and rest. I never had to allow long periods of crying - nor would I have. It seemed that following this method during the first few weeks of his life promoted security in him. He continues to be happy, well adjusted and a good sleeper 4 years later. The book also helped me to be better able to read the "cues" that babies send. Creating a loose schedule for a mother and baby helps both of them whereas a frantic, sleep deprived mother never knowing how to fully meet her baby's needs other than nursing creates an unhappy home for the whole family. I know some of the previous reviews are very negative, but I would recommend talking to some other mothers who have used this program before writing it off. The other reviews did not seem to come from parents who had tried this method but from people who were looking at it from an academic standpoint. Good Luck and God Bless.

3 out of 5 stars NIce book for new parents.......2007-05-14

This is an excellent reference book for new parents. It gives you the ranges of parenting without dictating what kind of parenting you should use.

5 out of 5 stars To all the Naysayers...........2007-04-12

I was given this book as a gift before my first child was born 13 years ago and read it along with all the other parenting books and magazines I had accumulated. I was a new, nervous parent living far away from the help of my mother or sisters, or any close friends to turn to for everyday advice. This is the one book that seemed to ring true for me, and I followed it - it was a Godsend! I now have two well adjusted, bright children who thrived as infants. As a first grade teacher, I continually see the products of over-indulgent parents, and children who by the age of 5-7 still do not have proper sleep habits, and no sense of security that consistency brings. I am not bothered that the 'newest trends' don't support the theories of this book, we have all seen 'new trends' turn out to be dangerous (doctors and nurses at one time even endorsed cigarettes!), or at the very least, ineffectual. And to comment on the arguments against the author's credentials - the only credential necessary to give advice to a parent is having been one yourself!

Amazon.com Reviews

Sonia Choquette is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher who has taught individuals as well as corporate staff members to claim and understand their intuitive and creative potential. (Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, considers Choquette her personal mentor and teacher.) Over the years, students have often asked Choquette how they can foster their children's innate intuition and creativity. This book is a welcome answer to this parental quest.

Choquette has divided this outstanding resource into three sections--each part representing the three stages of nurturing intuition. The first section teaches parents how they can awaken and commit to their own intuition, spirituality, and creativity. The second stage focuses specifically on "Embracing Intuition." Choquette discusses energy fields, children's auras (and the need for after-school aura cleansing), and fostering children's imaginations and inner guidance systems. Lastly, Choquette offers parents specific tools for gaining support from spiritual guides, teachers, healers, and helpers. Parents who long to discuss and learn more about raising spiritual beings will be greatly satisfied with this intelligent and altogether wise family resource. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

"Connecting to our intuition unites us with both our soul and the soul of the Universe, Divine Spirit. It takes away our fearful sense of isolation and inadequacy. It replaces fear with a sense of spiritual direction and safety. The world becomes friendly, nonadversarial, and welcoming. Life becomes joyful, amusing, generous, and abundant. This is the divine plan. The intuitive life is one of confidence, inner peace, and creative expression. What better gift to ourselves and our children?"

How can I help my children to thrive and prosper? How can I ensure that they will not become unhappy and frustrated as I have been? These are the questions that inspired Sonia Choquette to write this profound and accessible book explaining--through spiritual principles, modern-day parables, and practical exercises--how even busy parents can help children connect to their own source of divine guidance.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Children to Turst Themselves.......2007-03-20

This is a book from a many generation psychic on how to cultivate a home where children are trusted and are taught to trust themselves. Choquette herself was raised in a nurturing home by a mother who honored the six sense. If you have a sensitive child then this can help you create a supportive environment so that a child learns to trust themself and stay out of trouble. Children who are allowed to grow in their inner wisdom are more likely as adults to choose wisely compared to counterparts who are cut off from their gut.

On the flipside: Do you due diiligence on the credentials, even at the Ph.D. level of other more woo-woo writers on this field of energy and intuitive healing .... before you listen to their counsel. Many of them have Ph.D.'s from unaccredited places ... which means they didn't go through the same kind of rigor. Sonia is one of many popular New Agey type writers along with Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, John Gray, Barbara De Angelis, etc .... who are examples of Ph.D.s whose source were unaccredited universities. Please keep this in mind when venturing out to learn from an inuitive healer ...

4 out of 5 stars Helped me get closer to my children.......2006-08-01

At first I thought this book would be too "fruity" for me. I am not particularly New Age, and the talk of aura cleansing and energy fields was a little offputting to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway. My daughter, who is almost 3, has an almost eerie insight into the way others in our family are feeling, and I wanted to explore and nurture this facet of her personality. I am glad I did. I have reread this book several times now (something I rarely do) and the exercises at the end of each chapter have led me to do a lot of personal reflection on the way I was raised and the way that in turn affects my relationships with my children. I feel that as a result of those reflections I am not only nurturing my daughter's intuition but I am closer emotionally to her, and a better parent to her, as a result. Pick up a copy and give it a read; you may be surprised at what happens in your family.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Trust Comes From the Start.......2005-02-22

It is said that before children are trained to become human beings they are so truthful. Why? They are not yet trained in the art of denial. Their minds are clear enough to know an innate truth. Children have a wisdom all their own. Kids may be little but they are far more in tune with the what's so than adults. The Wise Child is a a program about nurturing this gift because the payoffs for a heightened awareness is positive. Being in tune is about going towards the positive and getting away from danger fast. Parents who believe in having an intuitive child will love this book.

I've also considered this a book for those who were somehow taught to shut down their intuitive abilities at a young age. So if you feel like reparenting your inner child towards a state of inner knowing ... this may be for you too.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to create an environment that honors intuition!.......2001-04-04

The author has written such a beautiful book - filled with information, tools, reflections, and "exercises" -sure to help you (and your child) expand your awareness of intuition as well as how to embrace and share those "gut feelings". My favorite tool in this book was learning how when I'm apart from loved ones, I can imagine a protective light surrounding them, that keeps them safe and sends them my love. This book is truly a powerful, nurturing guide. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for parents!.......2001-02-01

This book has truly changed the way I am interacting with my children. I originally bought it because people have told me my second son (of three) is extremely intuitive and I should learn some special techniques to use with him; however, what I love most about this book is that it applies to ALL CHILDREN and will help any caring parent create a more loving environment for their family. And, I have read it twice already (something I rarely do...) I have pages marked, paragraphs underlined, and notes in the margins. I even made a "cheat sheet" to hang on the fridge for quick reference. I was going to loan it to a friend but I don't want to let go of my copy, which is why I am on this site; I am ordering it for three friends!!! This book is worth every penny and more. Read it!

Book Description

Drawing on their own and others' research on decoding, Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness developed a highly successful reading method, entitled Phono-Graphix, in their first book, Reading Reflex published by Free Press, 1998. This reading method has a much higher success rate than phonics, and it is now being used in many schools in the U.S and other countries and by a large number of reading remedial specialists. Unfortunately, once a child can decode a text, there is no guarantee that she will then necessarily understand what she has read, and, to date, there have been few, systematic, research-based methods for teaching comprehension. To develop their path-breaking Language-Wise approach, the topic of this book, Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness looked at a wealth of cognitive development research related to comprehension. Verbal intelligence, they show, requires the following: good vocabulary, adequate memory, a knowledge of grammar, strong logical reasoning skills and some measure of creativity. Carmen and Geoffrey developed a series of approximately forty lessons to help children, from six and up, develop these skills. The lessons are fun and can be incorporated into whatever the child is currently reading. The lessons are also accessible & hands-on so that both parents & teachers can easily implement each lesson plan.

I never recieved the book and it was cancelled eventhough I wrote a note to Amazon informing them that my address is in the Virgin Islands and the order was sent to one of the ststes. I was very disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Basically a waste of money..........2006-08-11

...the first half of the book can be summarized as an argument that thinking about what you read will help you understand it better and thinking before you write will help you write better...I doubt anyone would argue with that...in the process they attempt to introduce various aspects of thinking that may help...most of the concepts, however, probably are ones with which you're already familiar...not surprisingly they manage to plug their other books, their website and their training seminars every few pages or so...and like many similar "pop" psychology type books there are many "anecdotes" of various indivdual successes they've had...the last half of the book is devoted to various "verbal intelligence activities"...unfortunately the activities are presented only in the most general fashion...for example, "Guess What" is nothing more than a guessing game where the teacher is supposed to provide clues to the pupil as to an object the teacher has in mind...no specifics as to what sorts of items and what sorts of clues would be best or most interesting -- it's up to the teacher to figure out should be chosen and how the clues should be presented...and this is the case in every activity...I don't know but if the teacher happens to be your average parent I seriously doubt they will possess either the time, energy or initiative necessary to come up with all the ideas required for the activities...moreover, I doubt that many would have sufficient training to know what ideas would be appropriate for a given age group, what ideas would be most interesting to a given age age group, etc...also, frankly, most of the activities presented seem quite boring...for example, one activity involves the teacher providing two words (e.g. cramp, lagoon) which the pupil is to use in a sentence...I just don't believe many kids would rise to the occasion for that sort of challenge...in summary, I seriously doubt anyone will find this book to be very useful -- either theoretically or practically.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book-but not the workbook.......2004-06-30

I think that Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness have hit the nail on the head when it comes to both teaching decoding skills and verbal intelligence. These books have been a great help teaching my dyslexic son to read and comprehend. I finally found a system that worked!

But, the "Language Wise Support Manual" that goes with this book is pricey (about 3 times the price of the book) and unnecessary. While it might help a classroom teacher who needs worksheets that he/she can send home for the student to work on, a parent can just use notebook paper to do the activities.

For example, to go with "Using Elaboration in Writing" page 234 in the book, the workbook simply as a sentence at the top of the page that says "Fill both pages on the topic of________", followed by two pages of lined paper. A great number of the pages are like this.

5 out of 5 stars If I hadn't found this book my son might not be able to read.......2003-08-03

This book gave me my first insight how to overcome difficulties associated with learning to read. The phonemic breakdown of the English language is remarkably well laid out and easy to understand. The precision of the text and user friendliness helped me find my son the help he needed to read and helped me be his coach to help him not just read better but comprehend more thoroughly and accurately. He read the latest Harry Potter book - almost 900 pages - in a week. He is 10. This book helped me understand that although some kids more intuitively make comprehension decisions while reading or listening, those critical evaluation skills asscoiated with language can be optimized by practice and breaking down the process to help a child take it one step at a time.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2000-04-12

Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness have added the perfect complement to their first book, "Reading Reflex." I have previously believed that there are two components for reading, decoding and comprehension. I now believe that they should be decoding and language development. Through my already extensive involvement with the "Language Wise Method", I am convinced that comprehension is a byproduct of verbal intelligence. I have witnessed it with my own eyes. Understanding what one reads proliferates when syntax (the categorical and functional relationship of words), vocabulary, attention, memory, logical reasoning and creativity improve. But verbal intelligence is not limited to producing comprehension, but has manufactured writing skills, communcation skills, memory and much more.

The comprehensive presentation concerning what verbal intelligence is, human motivation, the nature of language, vocabulary, comprehension, attention challenges, memory, logical reasoning and creativity, make up the first section of the book and supplies the reader with a solid foundation of knowledge about the real issues. Section two presents an aggregate of about forty activities that all team-up to produce the end result, verbal intelligence or making one language wise.

Having read, studied and applied this book to numerous children, I have obtained outstanding results to date. One example is a tenth-grade girl, comprehending at first-grade level who reached grade-level in 15 one-hour sessions with me.

The efficacy of this program is due, in part, to the way in which children are taught. Most of us are aware that when a child discovers something, the likelyhood that she has learned it increases. Through implicit/discovery learning, children are engaged in problem solving, connecting words, analyzing, metacognition, increasing their own vocabulary, and more.

I give "How To Increase Your Chid's Verbal Intelligence" a five star rating. It works and it's a blast.

2 out of 5 stars Not for younger children.......2007-09-27

Now, keep in mind that I have not read the book and have no idea how good it is for older children. This is specifically for younger children. I bought this book to read aloud to my 5 year old thinking it would be a fun way to introduce her to ancient cultures in our homeschool. Boy, was I surprised when it arrived and it was just a normal sized paperback with no pictures! It is not something that any but the most cerebral 5 year old would sit through. So it will sit on my shelf collecting dust until she is ready for it. Also, considering that it is just a paperback with no pictures it is really not worth the price even for older kids. Maybe grab it from your local library, but don't buy it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best children's narratives on the market.......2007-08-17

In my mind, S. Wise Bauer has attempted and succeeded: She has made history fun again. The children reading (or listening to) the books will not be writing a dissertation based upon what she has written-- but they will be inclined to pick up another history book, and another... Her writing will get them thinking and talking about history beyond dates.

That's why I like this series. I believe some of the negative reviewers have lost site of the purpose: To engage readers on an elementary level. If readers are following the classical model, they will see more detailed information about the events again (probably twice). This first go round just provides a point of reference for later study.

Examining historical events does not begin and end with one book or source. A true historian will pull together many resources in order to form a composite.

In defense of Bauer's writing, I think that some reviewers are expecting a grammar stage history "holy grail" of some sort. I have yet to find one. Every history book has it's pros and cons. In my mind, this one has more pros than cons.

Bauer does not claim to be the final resource or authority for grammar stage world history. As a matter of fact, she provides extensive lists of additional resources in her other books, like the Well Trained Mind and in the companion workbook. This is the main reason I give this book 4 stars. I wish I could give 4.5. Perhaps an abbreviated version of the resource lists should be included in each volume as an appendix if it is going to stand alone.

Overall, I think it's great for what it aims to do: spark discussion and develop life long learners.

2 out of 5 stars Liked the format and presentation - not the facts.......2007-06-27

I was looking for a history book as I homeschool my daughter. I was very happy with the workbook format and projects as well as history presented in chronological order. As I am not a history scholar, I was enjoying learning the history along with my daughter up until I was reading her chapter on Christianity. Being a Christian who has studied much of the bible, I am familiar with a good amount of these facts. Some of the facts she presents are so wrong that now I question many of the facts she presents from other cultures. If you are looking for an easy read and presentation of different cultures this book is good. I will continue thru the series as I do like certain things about it, however, I am now aware of its weakness and will use other books to supplement the fact presented so the information will be more accurate.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but I'm wishing for more.......2007-03-22

My expectations for this book were too high, based on some reviews, although I was worried about comments about inaccuracies. I found it disappointing.

I think what I react against is that this book is just one of many which seem to say the only ancient history that's at all important is what happened in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. There is a chapter on India and a chapter on China, but they are hat-tipping kinds of chapters that don't give the awesome breadth of those amazing cultures. And I was super disappointed with the chapter on the Americas. Mexico, according to this book's geography, is part of Central America. North Americans are all termed nomads, as if they were wandering around aimlessly instead of in the amazing variety of communities that they really lived in - some villages, some awesome cities, and others who didn't settle in permanent villages still had definite territories they exploited.

There is actually more material given on characters of the Bible, which are not labelled as from the Bible but treated as actual historical characters, than there is on the ancient Americas, or ancient China for that matter.

This really doesn't seem to be the story of the world, but the story of western civilization, with a smattering of other cultures thrown in as an afterthought.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent World History Primer.......2007-09-21

There is no doubt that this series is well written. My son read each of the four books in the span of less than a week. They really piqued his interest. These books will let you know what really turns on your child, but you'll need to go on for further, more in-depth review.

Can't recommend this series enough for the pre-teen set!

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and Informative!.......2007-08-27

This is our second purchase of the Story of the World series. All three of my school age kids (6,8,10 yrs.) just love to listen to these tapes. It is giving all of us (mom included) a much more comprehensive picture of all the parts of history we have learned with other books. We highly recommend this product for your family as a history program or just for listening to in the car for fun. The acitvity book is also full of great ideas for making this as involved or as simple as you would like it to be.

I got what I wanted, at a fair price, exactly as described. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product.......2006-11-04

The history is in a story format that kids can relate to and understand. I homeschool 3 children and absolutely love this curriculum. The story pages to color help my youngest follow along as the older ones read. We have the activity book and there are supplementary books that we get from the library. The quizes also help alot!

3 out of 5 stars Everyone liked this but me..........2006-08-15

I think I kinda jumped the gun, I bought this for a first grader and I think it is for older kids.. it seems um, like a nice book. I'm used to KONOS and well, this didn't seem to make any history information fun... so, it depends on your teaching style.
