Black presents The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book, a guide offering 125 recipes, lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid, and a full week of sample menus for summer and winter months. Written especially for individuals attempting to follow an anti-inflammatory diet who have trouble finding recipes to use, The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book offers entrees, breakfasts, salads, soups, and desserts that exclude common allergens and inflammation-aggravators such as fried foods, foods with hydrogenated oils, peanuts and peanut products, alcohol, juice, caffeinated teas and sodas, potatoes, tomatoes, wheat products, corn, sugar, pork, citrus fruits and more. Chapters also recommend foods that should be prominently featured in an anti-inflammation diet, such as pineapple (due to its content of bromelain), most fruits and vegetables, garlic, ginger, tumeric, flaxseed oil, and others. An excellent, health-promoting guide especially recommended for anyone coping with arthritis or other inflammatory illnesses.

One of the most difficult challenges I have faced when suggesting to my patients on dietary modifications is offering patients alternatives to their inflammatory menus. Not only has Dr. Black provided easy to prepare and tasty recipes, but the ingredients serve their purpose: they favor pathways that decrease inflammation. Hence patients with intensely inflammatory conditions, such as rhumatoid arthritis, have been able to experience relief, thanks to this cookbook. It offers recipes that appeal to kids and provides ample educational material for patients to resource. It is the ideal cookbook for all.

This book has been a powerful resource in my practice for many years dating back to its original self-published version. I have found that foremost in the process of restoring a persons health is inflammatory reduction. It is this inflammation which often initiates and propogates a disease process that eventually creates pathology. Dr. Black's book is an essential tool for implementing my recommended dietary changes on a practical level. It is full of helpful educational material and ripe with a multitude of savory and delicious recipes. This book will give you all the necessary information to begin a positive lifestyle change which you can then apply to your own cullinary creations. For those people looking to restore health naturally, Dr. Black's book will not disappoint.

I have been using the dietary recommendations outlined in Dr. Black's book for a number of years with my patients. It is so helpful to have a comprehensive cookbook that explains why people should eat this way and how they should do it! It really has made dietary changes less overwhelming for people that may have been intimidated to make big shifts in the way that they eat. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in addressing their health concerns from a foundational level.

The Harmonious Functioning Model of the relationship between thoughts and emotions provides a simple state-of-the-art model that readers can use to better understand and control their emotions.

The harmonious functioning model assumes that the brain is an information processor and assumes that the main functions of the cerebral cortex are (1) to learn at an optimal rate and (2) to carry out the executive functions of running our lives. Therefore, it should be no great surprise that learning and mental control are among our strongest [higher] human motives.

The primary function of the sensations--like pleasure and pain--is to provide feedback about the innate, lower need states [hunger, thirst, sex, etc.]. The primary function of the emotions--like anger, anxiety, depression, and happiness--is to provide feedback about the learned, higher need states information and managing our lives. For example, sex normally produces powerful, innate sensations of pleasure. However, the thought that one might get AIDS can overshadow any biologically-based pleasure and create emotions like fear.

Think of a time when you had a "peak experience." What was happening? What caused it? When the brain is learning at an optimal rate (when its inputs or tasks are optimally challenging at all levels), then it hums along in a state of harmonious functioning. Our mind is functioning in the way "it was designed" to optimally function. If we are overstimulated or overchallenged with too much input for our abilities, then we feel the overarousal emotions such as anxiety and confusion. If we are understimulated or underchallenged, then we feel bored or depressed.

Being "in the zone" of harmonious functioning creates the "Big 3" outcomes of peak learning, peak performance, and peak happiness. This model explains why people who seem to have all life's advantages are often less happy than people who have much less. It is mental control of events--not external control--that is the key to happiness.

Our happiness level tells us how healthily our body, mind, and "spirit" are functioning. Our emotions tell us if our lives are in proper balance and harmony. We cannot be maximally happy if we only live for today or only live for ourselves. An innate brain mechanism controlling our emotions scans our personal world and will not let us completely ignore important issues.

Knowing that in any situation we can choose one of many internal or external routes to happiness gives us optimism and confidence--mental control of the situation. However, all these routes eventually end in thoughts; thoughts measured by this harmonious functioning-emotions brain mechanism. Therefore, harmonious thinking--not just getting what we want--is the key to happiness. It is the match between inputs and our expectations, abilities, and other thinking processes that determine our emotional reactions. When the match is harmonious, the result is happiness.

Understanding and planning increase mental control of emotions. Chapter 8 summarizes six powerful mental control strategies for raising or lowering our emotional temperatures. It provides the reader with specific tools for "rising above" anxiety, anger, and depression.

Relationships and loneliness are key sources of happiness or unhappiness. Readers can learn how to overcome fears of rejection and criticism or unhealthy needs for acceptance or codependence. They can become more internally controlled and assertive. Chapter 6 tells how.

Finally, O-PATSM is a time and life management system that Dr. Stevens has taught to thousands of people through his workshops and has proven to help people reach their goals, get more control of their lives, be more productive, and have more fun!

Only read this book if you want to change your life. This book is for people who want to help themselves and believe that they have choices in their lives. As a therapist, I believe this concept is one of the most important awarenesses you can have. Once a person accepts this they know they can have more control over their reactions in every life situation. Dr. Stevens book is not to entertain but to give well thought out strategies for rising above difficult situations and moving towards "harmonious functioning", which he defines as having happiness and harmony in your life.

        I don't have much to add to the other positive reviews. This book is definitely worth reading, for all the reasons mentioned.

        This book caught my eye the other night and since I'm recently engaged I went ahead and ordered it. The book was not really a disappointment to me, but it wasn't exactly all that I had hoped either.

        I just felt that the writing style in this book was very cluttered and disorganized. Many, many times the authors repeated their points, paragraph after paragraph, just using different phrasing. I understand reinforcing ideas - but they went on for pages and pages doing this.

        The example couples they used were helpful, but not really very insightful. Mainly I found it hard to read because the editor of this book didn't worry much about tense and subject-verb agreement - the writing just isn't that great. They used the word empathic about 900 times.

        This book is average, in my opinion. I'm sure there are many people who would benefit from this book and the authors' ideas. It just didn't speak to me very much. A good Christian title that does follow very organized points and boasts excellent writing is "Love Life for Every Married Couple" by Dr. Ed Wheat.

        As a psychologist and relationship therapist, I think this is THE BEST BOOK for couples early in their marriage (or serious relationship) to help "normalize" their experiences, be respectful of the importance of their relationship, to face together the growth challenges, and to increase thier intimacy. Dr. McCarthy is wise, human, honest, and wonderfully insightful --> and helpful in practical ways. My full and strong recommendation. Buy this book (even if you've been together with your partner for a long time!).

          With 500 tips I have to admit that I found some good ideas but I didn't like the book. Whether he meant to or not Aslett comes off as that guy everyone in the office can't stand. Some of his ideas simply don't stand up to workplace reality and others were clearly written by a guy who hasn't sat in a cubicle in many years.

          Decent book, not quite up to par with Aslett's best books. Plenty of good ideas for minimizing overhead at work and concentrating on the "real" task that needs to get done. I take some exception at his recommendations to work evenings and weekends when needed - I think most purchasers of the book want to simplify their work life so they can get out of the office on time and enjoy the rest of their life. i.e. working overtime is one of the biggest components of a *non-simple* work life.

          I have been tired for most of my life. In college they used to prefix my name with "fall asleep as soon as she sits down girl". After numerous blood tests, a doctor finally reccommended nutrition. Pam's book really helped me understand the causes of my fatigue. I can't say I am full of energy now, but I am much more energetic than ever before and I have lost five pounds to boot! Thanks, Pam.

          Pam Smith has once again done a great job! The book explained so well what the pros and cons for every trend diet and how these do not work. I, myself am a living testimony of that. I look forward to staying and keeping on a steady track to achieve my maximum health level. The Diet Trap lists out the meals, snacks and even a shopping list of all that our bodies need. A great book with wonderful effects.

          This book was so full of information for an easy to follow plan for your diet and your life! I couldn't put it down! I wanted to know more! I wanted to get up to practice what I was reading and she was right. No frills, just practical information you can use. I knew she was a Christian and I could tell the influence on her book. Very balanced and enlightening!
