Found our baby's name in this book!.......2007-09-11
This is a great book for the analytical choosy type. We went through every name in the book and actually found the name for our son. We wanted to make sure we picked a rare name, and this book is a BIG help in finding those rarely used names.
boring.......2007-09-09
too long. i have no idea what the point of this book was. i hated it so much i couldn't get through the first chapter.
addictive reading.......2007-09-08
Much more helpful than a simple catalog of names, this book also makes extremely interesting reading. Why are some names ragingly popular, and why does a name appeal to us? How has a name historically risen and fallen in popularity? I can't begin to count the number of hours before bed I've spent reading this book.
Naming a child is a lovely responsibility. I think this book helps more than any other in making a decision that respects the individuality of the child, as well as the indulgences of the parents.
Very helpful.......2007-08-21
I loved this book. I went through so many name books before I found this one. The categories are fun to read through. I did not know that my name and the one I was considering for my daughter were highly popular in the 70s. All my Aunts' names were the "happy" names of the 50s. This book has very few uncommon names. If you are looking for something ethnic, this might disappoint. It didn't even have "Jolene" but it's pretty easy to guess what the meaning of that is. Because I was looking for a more normal name (even Anica, which I loved, sounded too foreign for my girl) this book was refreshing. I found the perfect name that fit all the categories I liked: Heather.
Great book!.......2007-08-17
I love this book! The author does more than define the names listed. She categorizes them, she shows recent trends, lists similar names to suggest alternatives, and she gives her opinion of each name without insulting or talking down to the reader. It's a great book for soon-to-be parents or anyone that's interested in names. The only slight problem is the fact that the book has been out for about two years, so the trends shown may no longer be entirely accurate, but you'll still be able to get a general idea of the popularity (or lack thereof).
Book Description
This is more than your average baby name book: unlike the dozens of mass-market paperbacks available, Town & Country Baby Names has the style and elegance to make an exquisite gift. Stunningly designed and produced, with charming line drawings throughout, it’s a lovely and useful resource at an excellent price. The introduction provides guidelines to consider when naming a baby, from researching the family tree for names to knowing the pitfalls of choosing a unisex or trendy name. Each entry includes the name’s origin and meaning (Claire comes from Latin, and means “clear and bright”; Stephen, from the Greek, means “crown”), and special features suggest possibilities such as Favorite Names from the Garden and Beloved Names from Children’s Literature.

Ordinary Baby Name Book.......2007-05-13
This book is definitely for the "Sarah and David" set. We were looking for something with a little more "panache" for our daughter and found the names in this book to be the requisite classics that you would expect from a book compiled by the publishers of "Town & Country" magazine. I will say that it was organized very well into specific sections, but I do recommend that if you are looking for a more original children's name, that you look at the "Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana" book.

Learn to listen for the ideal name!
The Perfect Baby Name is the first book of its kind-providing parents with a creative approach to selecting first and middle names that sound good with readers' surnames. A good combination of names is pleasing to the ear, easy to remember, and can help a child be popular and successful in life.
Utilizing the techniques found in poetry and phonetics, parents will discover how to examine a surname by the sum of its parts-and match it with the perfect first name. With this unique new method, parents can choose the baby name that everyone is looking for: the perfect one!
Here's how it works with the surname Green:
Break down the sounds: G, R, long E, and N. These are the four different sounds (or phonemes) in that name. Now refer to those four different lists in the back of the book.
The G list has names like Hugo and Morgan...
The R list has Rex and Aurora...
The E (long) list, Eli and Alicia...
The N list, Nathaniel and Lindy...
All of these names sound good with the surname Green, so now it's just a matter of personal preference. Readers can scan the lists for the name they like best and choose the perfect match!

If you buy one baby name book -this is it!! .......2007-03-31
With all the on-line resources finding a baby name was soooo overwhelming. This book broke down into simple guidelines what makes a name sound good with your last name -or at least sound better than other names. You don't need an alliteration -Jennifer Aniston was one example. I started going through the guidelines and found that almost all of my friends and family had followed these rules/guidelines without knowing them. It was a great way to help us wade through the tons of names out there!!
Something to think about.......2007-02-13
Although we didn't end up choosing a name directly from the book, the book helped point out a few things to think about while selecting a name. It gave great lists of names for specific sounds that we might have been going for. I thought it was useful, and we bought it for naming our second child which was definitely harder for us.
Not impressed.......2006-09-01
I was unable to read this book past her premise- make sure there is alliteration in your baby's name. What? I don't think that alliteration is necessary to make a nice sounding name, Whitney Walker! I guess it is nice to be memorable but frankly, I am more concerned about the cadence of a name (and how it flows with the last name) and the "feel" of a name than alliteration. Scrap this book and try The Baby Name Wizard by Laura Wattenberg first.
Not quite what I expected.......2006-02-23
This book was good...in that I understood her point. Some names just roll off your tongue and others you stumble over. But I found the endless lists hard to follow after a while. I guess I was expecting a more detailed formula and not just sounding out my own last name.
WAY TOO COMPLICATED!!.......2006-01-31
I guess the other people who reviewed this book paid far more attention in English class than I did. I find this book's instructions difficult and time consuming. It seems like you have to do an awful lot of work on the different sounds, syllables and stresses in your last name before you can begin to look for a first name. Then comes trying to find a middle name that fits into the phonetics and poetry rules the book tells you to follow. WAY TO DIFFICULT! Just give me an old fashioned baby name book any day.
Amazon.com
A chatty, opinionated book listing a huge number of unusual names and their derivations, as well as helpful lists of the most popular names from each decade. If you're thinking of naming your baby girl "Alonsa," it might be useful to know that it means "ready to fight."

It's OK.......2006-06-22
I'm not sure what to make of some of the reviews. I paid very little for this book so I was willing to take a chance. I figured out of 25,000 names we could find something that would appeal to us. I think it is a useful name book. It is true that they have a variety of names from very different origins i.e African, Japanese, Hebrew, Greek, etc. However, in our case we weren't looking for a book that would give us Amy, Jenny, Bob, Jack and James. We are familiar with those common names already. So for us it will do the job. True, there are some names in here that I can't believe anyone would ever name their kid but I think that I could say that for any name book. If you are looking for a common name then there probably are better books out there. If you want a name that is a little more unique then you will probably be satisfied.
Worthless.......2005-04-25
Maybe one out of every 100 names in this book is a name I've heard of. There must be over 20,000 of the 25,000 names that are Hindu, Arabic, Hebrew, African, Thai, or Czech. The first 10 girls' names listed are Aaliyah, Aanandini, Aba, Ababuo, Abagbe, Abam, Abayomi, Abebi, Abedabun, and Abegaila. Abagbe???!!!
If you're looking for a simple book of names to peruse, this is not the one for you.
...but do you really need EVERYTHING?.......2004-06-05
This book is completely out of control.
Any reader, or thumber-through, or this book, who will (of course) be looking for ideas on what to name an upcoming addition to her family, will be completely snowed under by the absurd profusion of exotic names contained in this book, and will end up wasting approximately 90% of the time spent poring over this waste of paper. The emphasis here is overwhelmingly on sheer quantity of information, rather than quality. I was not surprised to read from some of the other reviews here that the author has played fast-and-loose with meanings and authenticity of certain Japanese names, and this flaccidity-with-the-facts undoubtedly runs throughout the entire course of the book. As well, one might expect such a voluminous catalog of (to say the least) UNUSUAL names, to provide a pronunciation key for those parents-to-be who might actually take some of the suggestions seriously, but this book has no such help. As such, the information that is here, undoubtedly error-ridden to begin with, can be nothing more than an idle curiosity.
Above all, the vast majority of names in here are just so outlandish that NO ONE would begin to consider them. Dead set on a girl's name that begins with the letters "Tz"? No fear: there are OVER A DOZEN of them in here (I swear I am not making this up).
This book is a perfect example of the worst excesses of both reality-immune multiculturalism as well as the make-a-quick-buck-off-new-parents industry. Undoubtedly, Lisa Shaw never had in mind to put together a book that would actually help parents decide on a name for their child. Presumably, such a book exists, but this is decidedly not it.
Don't trust her foreign names!!.......2003-11-02
I can't believe she has actually published this book without doing more research! Almost all the Japanese names listed there are useless - I would feel sorry for your child. If she is so inaccuarte with Japanese names, I wouldn't trust any of other foreign names listed there. The author should be more responsible if she was going to publish something. Do more research, please!
Great Name Book.......2003-05-01
I found this book to be just about everything I was looking for in a name book. It gave a wide variety of names along with their meanings and origins. There were also lists included of things like what celebrities are naming their children, flower and animal names, etc. The book was well structured and easy to navigate which is a plus when going through it with my husband. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thorough name book.

Totally worth it - the best book of them all.......2007-09-22
Hi -
I own no less than 5 baby name books and this is the one I keep coming back to. It is sooooo important what you call your baby. I knew that I wanted a good name before I read the book, but now I know what makes a name good:
In my mind, the 2 most important factors you can learn about in this book are Fit and Goodwill (Uniqueness is also described in this book, but I sort of intuitively knew that one before). In a nutshell, think about fit with your family & your religion, maybe your race. Goodwill is really a bit like a "credit score" for the name ... it all makes more sense in the book, but it is an easy read I recommend this for every parent ... you can't afford to miss it.
Must-read baby name book.......2007-08-29
Yes - I actually said must-"read" because in contrast to most other books, this one actually has something to tell you, instead of just listing thousands of names (which you can get for free on the web, just Google "baby names").
The left-brain baby book.......2007-08-13
When I first read the subtitle "scientific guide" I was a bit taken aback - how can someone try to bring cold science into something as emotional and cuddly as picking a name? I was afraid I'd get a boring treaty with little practical application.
Turns out, I was wrong. I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it (it's a quick read, which helps). I think the author strikes a good balance between scientific facts and examples how to use them in your "name hunt". For anyone with left-brain tendencies, this is a welcome change from all the other baby books (I own a few).
What I think could be better: more charts in the back of the book (I had to go the website for nearly all of my name ideas), more information on family traditions and their impact (I liked the chapter about "Junior"), better discount at the website for buyers of this book.
Overall though, 2 thumbs up.
I like the website.......2007-08-12
I am not typically writing reviews but I think some of the older posts don't do this product justice - I liked it and found it really useful in my decision making process.
There are a few reviews that complain about missing features on the website: I've both read the book and looked at the website and ALL THE FEATURES mentioned in the book are there. Maybe they've added them in 2-3 months since the other reviews were written; however that may be, I could find them easily (even though some required me to go through a - lengthy - registration process).
I liked this book because it was a true eye-opener in many aspects. I would never have thought about memorability of a name, for example, or how I should think about avoiding fads.
I also liked the reports that are available on the website, but unfortunately you get only 1 free one.
I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have strong family traditions that guide the name, because it helps you think about a lot of thinks that you just wouldn't come up with on your own. However, don't buy it as a "baby name list" book, because there are only a few hundred names in this book compared with the literally thousands in some other ones, which are also much cheaper. For a pure list book, I recommend Best Baby Name Book In The Whole World which you can pick up for only $5.
Not what I was hoping for..........2007-08-07
I purchased 4 baby names book, and this one did not contain any actual names to choose from but rather the theory behind choosing them. I would have been happy with this except that in order to get any reports or suggestions based on the theory, you have to purchase a membership on the authors website for $[...]. And the real problem was that website was terrible. The name suggestions generated based on a list of some my existing favorites were completely off. For example, I listed the names Electra, Luna, Kiera, and Elle. Yet, it gave me these names as "recommendations" that I would like: Mary, Nicole, Louise, May. Not even close! They need to improve their site, and without the site, the book isn't that valuable. Oh, here's another tip. You can read most of the contents of the book from the website [...]

Awsome Book!!!.......2007-01-08
This is one of the best book about baby names. There are very nice categories which help to choose the best name for you baby. I'm pregnant with my second child but I wish this book existed earlier because I could use it to name my first child as well. If you buy this book you won't need any other. I've bought many baby name books and when my husband saw that I have a new one he said "Oh, the next useless book about names.", but when he took a look at this book he said "Hmm, finally you got something worth to read". I can proudly say that my second baby will be named with a name from this book. I'm also planning to have more kids, so I won't need other book because I got the best here. So ladies, what I'm trying to say is that if you wonder which baby name book to buy, you should definitely buy this one! Recommendation from a happy family.
FABULOUS BOOK!!!.......2006-11-20
This is the most wonderful baby-name book I've ever read. It's very fun to read. It's well-written, incredibly helpful and insightful. It goes into much more detail than the books that just list names. Beside the thousnads of names there are also very entertaining categories like : numerology, first letter meanings, popular names, tips on naming, and history/origin of the names, celebrity names and many more. I recommend it to all future mothers. I am sure that you'll love this book. It's really perfect book with perfect names and I am glad to have it! I'M A VERY HAPPY PREGNANT MOTHER WHO RECOMMEND THIS WONDERFUL BOOK TO ALL PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE WORLD! I value only high class books and this one is the best!
The ultimate book of baby's names!.......2006-11-09
This was one of the most useful and interesting baby naming books I've read! This book is a jewel of a find! I've flipped through and purchased countless baby name books. This is BY FAR my favorite. It's perfectly organized, well-written, insightful and incredibly helpful. It goes into much more detail than the books that just list names. It includes thousands of names from all over the world with absolutely accurate meanings, most popular names, tips on names, first letter meanings, numerology and a lot of entertaining material. Other books I've seen just give you an alphabetical listing of names, the origins and it's specific meaning - how boring! It's really unique among all other baby name books. A great book for yourself to read as you select a name for your child or as a fun gift for expectant parents. I highly recommend it!
I would have given it a 6+ if it was possible! +++++++
First Class - A Real Baby Name Encyclopedia!.......2006-11-03
This book took the stress and indecision out of the baby name process and gives first class guidance in what is probably one of the most important decisions you'll ever make.
Whatsmore far from being a task, this book was fun too. I looked forward to resuming where I left off.
Its a big book and a sound investment in your baby's future. My baby is worth it and I'm glad I made it.
Terrible book - why all the positive reviews?.......2006-10-02
Are these reviews from the author's friends and family? This book is a joke. No offense, but it looks like info culled off the internet and copy-pasted into a word documented, printed to an inkjet, photocopied and bound. Even worse, much of the information is inaccurate. I showed some of the foreign name sections to native speakers, and they laughed at some of the ridiculous errors. Buyer beware -- do not name your child based on this book without confirming elsewhere. I would hate to have children named based on false information.

A fun read!.......2005-09-09
I've seen more exhaustive name lists in other books, but this one is definitely one the most interesting and fun-to-read name books I've come across.
Top of The Top 14.......2005-08-09
A Very Topical Name book With creative Name groupings. pretty good meanings and creative listings. Very historical and Nature friendly names a good gift for a mom or dad to be.
Highly usefull.......2004-10-04
I enjoyed this book and I found it to be very usefull. It did not take long to go through and it introduced me to names I hadn't heard of or thought of before and introduced me to some old names I thought of before. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it didn't have same names in it that are more popular now in 2004 versus when it came out and was republished in the 90's. I highly enjoyed it and recommend it but it is not really updated to the times.
the best baby name book out there.......2001-11-14
When I had my daughter in 1993 I bought this book after careful perusing in the store in which I bought it. It was important to me to find a book that listed MANY names and that it had correct meanings attached. My daughters name was found in this book as well as all three of my sisters children and a few other friends have looked it over in the process of their own pregnancies. I am actually going to buy a second copy, for myself...as my original is dog-eared and has many notes in the margins.
With names like Nani, Kalea, Logan, Danica, Oriana, Sheena, and Dara (some of the children I personally know who were either named from this book or whos names are included inside) you cant go wrong, in fact I judge how good a baby name book is by these names..if they are not there..it is not a complete enough book...and this one has them ALL! As we go through the process of finding a name for our newest addition, this book is a great resource, and will be in our family for generations.
A Great Guide.......2001-01-08
When I became pregnant with my first child in 1996 I immediately began thinking about what I would name my unborn baby so my father gave me this book of names to help me decide. This book is a great read for parents that are not really sure what to name their kids. It is also great to find out what your own name really means and prevent yourself from making the same mistakes some parents have made naming their children. I think I have memorized the entire book. I have become a bit of a name nut since I received this book. If someone needs help with a name - they just call me. Hopefully my children will appreciate my dedication in searching for their names. I certainly appreciated the help.

The Perfect Name - The Perfect Book.......2005-09-25
I recieved this book as a gift, normally I wouldn't purchase a baby name book so I guess that's why I was given it as a gift. I have to say that I'm very impressed with this book. I love that it does more than just give you a list of baby names. It gives you lots of information about everything leading up to choosing a baby name, the traditions, the dilemmas of name choosing, finding out the sex of the baby beforehand and so much more. I like the others have mentioned love the color coding.
The only down side for me as one of the others mentioned was pronunciation, I have a hard time figuring out how to actually say some names and it would have been helpful however for me that doesn't knock off any stars I still rate it a 5 because I found all the editorial about naming babies very informative and interesting unlike the simple list of baby names books on the market!
A wonderful guide and name dictionary!.......2005-07-17
When I was pregnant with my first child, I was mostly disappointed with the baby name books I found. Now pregnant with my second, a friend suggested I check out The Perfect Name, and I am so glad I did!
Like the reviewer before me, I really appreciate the color coded pages. It makes for easy scanning and flipping. But that's not really what distinguishes this book.
First, there are so many names to choose from. Admittedly, they aren't all names I'd consider, but I was surprised to find names I hadn't considered, but now might. Second, I love the quotes, facts, statistics and lists interspersed throughout. I found myself reading through the boys names, even though I'm having a girl, simply to read these lovely additions. Finally, I appreciated the naming insight in the beginning and the step by step exercises provided in the back. This enables indecisive parents, like my husband and me, to focus in on their top preferences and ultimately find a name they both love.
If you're looking for a baby name, make sure you check out this book!
The Perfect Addition to the New Parent Bookshelf.......2005-04-26
At first I didn't want to buy a baby name book. I had tons of ideas in my head. But when my boyfriend suggested we purchase one and cuddle on the couch perusing the pages- I couldn't resist.
We actually headed to a local bookstore to purchase this- and when I was looking on the shelves, I noticed a difference in the baby name books. Many were thin, almost like pocket dictionaries- so I assumed they were condensed versions that would not be as fun to look through. Also, many books I found seemed to read like a dictionary. While I'll confess to reading old Webster prior to a Scrabble match, it's boring. Pregnancy is exciting, and I wanted an exciting and helpful baby name guide- not just a list of names and meanings.
Then I saw Jeanie Cox'x The Perfect Name. The book for starters caught my eye by its colors. The top of the book's pages are color-coded so you can easily navigate through the boy and girl names. What I enjoyed even more than a huge, coloful dictionary portion, was that there was lots of parenthood/name quotes of famous people next to their names, as well as other trivia points.
But- this book is more than just a dictionary- it's a binch of meanings sandwiched between some helpful content. The first 50 pages are dedicated to how to cooperate with naming the baby between mom and dad. Then, the steps they list are accompanied by worksheets that are in the back of the book. First, you pick out names you like off the top of you head- then she tells you to play with alliteration, acronyms, and names from the bible, Shakespeare, nature, new age, places and surnames as first names. This all opens up your creativity and lets you find names you may have passed over. Finally, I love how it helps you narrow down the names by letting mom and dad join in together.
The only reason I gave this book four stars is because I felt it was missing something very important- PRONUNCIATION!! I know how to pronounce Tom, Dick and Harry- but not Rheged, Aegidius and Rocico! That would really help people who are looking for very unique names, especially Indian names.
Good luck to all the other new parents out there!

I wouldn't name my dog anything from this book........2007-01-30
This may be the perfect book if you want your kid to be picked on and teased mercilessly. They say it builds character. However if you'd perfer not to have your children curse your name even after you've gone skip this piece of trash. If you want a book with normal names in it definitely skip this. example from the k in girls koruna, kosma, ksena, kuma, kuni, kupona, kura, kuri, kyla, kymberley, kyo, kyra, kyrie, kristine, krystal. Just a little example of the normality of the names.
Not a typical name book........2005-12-02
Like a previous reviewer, I have loaned this book out and not had it returned - people who have it don't like to let it go. Rather than a simple list of names and variations, this book goes to a lot of effort to explain language variations and histories for a lot of common, and unusual, names. The advice on creating new names is unlike anything I have ever read in any other name book. The downside of this book is that if you buy one copy, you'll no doubt be buying more if you make the mistake of lending it out ;)
Not the Same Old Stuff.......2003-10-25
I have lent and LOST 3 copies of this book to the borrowers! Interesting names abound...the "usual" ones are there too, but De La Paix even gives unexpected foreign variations of THOSE, so your kid won't be the 6th Ashley or 4th Sam in class! Some light-hearted trivia about many names; hints on how to create an original. Cool African tribal, Asian, Native American, Celtic, Gaelic names; learn "June" or "May" in 15 languages! It'd be 5 stars if it had 40,000 instead of 30,000 names --- couldn't get enough.
Unusual.......2003-01-07
If you are looking for names that are different or ethnically oriented, this book offers plenty of choices. If you are looking for ordinary or old-fashioned, there is a list that is repeated frequently. I, personally, didn't find this book useful.
If you enjoy name books, you'll like this.......2002-07-06
I love names, and I'm always looking for books on the subject. This book has the right amount of both boys and girls names. Just The Perfect Name is the perfect book for someone trying to come up with the right name for their baby, or for someone who simply enjoys names, like I do.
