This has a lot of interesting explanations on how the oils mix, about synergistic blends. It is a great overview of aromatherapy.

However, I find the book to be a little bit too preachy. When the author wrote this book, did she consider the audience? Every other sentence explains about the toxicity and the poisons of our every day products. It's a bit much. One doesn't need to convert the choir. They are already converted, at least part way. One can do without such overt preachiness.

My second criticism is that the book is designed for a beginner. As a beginner, it seems to me that the recipes should be a little more basic. While in the beginning, she discusses the 10 essential oils that everyone should have in their basic care arsenal, the other recipes often go far beyond those 10. As a beginner, I have yet to acquire all of these costly oils, and then some. It would be helpful to have recipes that didn't contain 6-10 different oils. An example would be: these two oils is a basic recipe for this, and if you really want to go further, add these as well. (There are a number of recipes like that, but they are far and few.) Also, it would be nice to know why one essential oil was chosen over another for a certain mixture. Is it for anti-inflammatory reasons? For general antiseptic? Anti fungal? One has to do a lot of guessing. This is supposed to be a beginners book, after all.

I usually use Gel Candles to fragrance my home. My daughter first told me about all types of Essential Oils and what they can do. So I went into the Internet and found this great book. It explains everything there is to know. For example, what is safe to use in the home, around children and pets. Its also explains what the scents are, which I plan to use to making greater Gel Candles. Most Important, what not to use cause it can be dangerous to your health. I really recommend this book.

The information and rememdies in this book are good but I found very important information on toxicity of oils to be lacking. In short, I tried a remedy for bunions by following the instructions given in the book, but I started feeling very strange and it wasn't until I read another reference book on essential oils that I found tagetes oil is listed on the toxic oil list. The warning is to use it only very diluted (which her recipe was NOT)and for only two weeks. There are some other oils in her recipes that are photoxic for the skin but there is no mention of this in her book. It's of vital importance that the consumer know the complete information about all the oils they will be using. I would recommend buying a complete reference book of esential oils as a companion to this one.

"CMAOD dot com" offers every kind of kung fu form and style you would ever wish to learn from beginning to end: traditional hong gar, almost all styles of Shaolin, Dim Mak, traditional hong fist, animal styles, many fighting self-defense videos, wudang, er mei, and dozens of other complete systems of kung fu, including weapons, forms, and self-defense. You name it, you can learn it, without having to spend thousands of dollars to learn from phony kung fu teachers. This is an excellent book, not only for the beginer, but also for those who have been studying Shaolin for many years! It is very informative about the history, phylosophy, and tecnique of Shaolin kung fu. It's a great book for doing cross-refrence on different training and also has many inspiring stories in it. I'd recomend this book to ANYONE interested in Shaolin!

This book has EVERYTHING you need to know to be healthy, happy, and most importantly fit. It has great detail (which it not boring nor complicated) that is very thorough. This book is much better than the magazine. I workout off an on maybe 3 times a week and really need motivation to workout. After the first few pages of this book I wanted to work out everyday to my full potential. You don't need a personal trainer to look like a goddess. With the illustrations and chapters in this book. You will have all the tools and motivation to do it yourself. Whether in shape or someone just wanting to better their health it's a definite reference book you want to have in your home library.

This book has answered so many questions for me. Being overweight it was important for me to understand why I was doing what I was doing and how each change would effect my body. This book helped so much that I lost 80 lbs. I had gained some of this weight back and was getting very discouraged. I pulled this book off the shelf again and reread all the information I needed to motivate me.

Every women wants the answers and know how to speed up their metabolism and want to know what to eat before and after their workouts. Everything is here. Plus, do you know how hard and how long you need to workout to burn fat vs. build muscle or stay burning suger. This book will tell you. I could never say enough about this book!! It makes you understand what you should do and tells you how you can acheive it.

There's nothing more frustrating than diligently adhering to a fitness regimen and not getting the results you expected. If this has ever happened to you, you must read this book.

So many times we start with good intentions but bad advice. Or our bodies work differently than we expected them to. Knowledge is very powerful, and it helps you take control of your health and really understand your body. Instead of getting frustrated, blaming yourself, and giving up, get some facts.

Here are just a few of the fitness issues this book resolved for me:

Q: How long do I need to do aerobics to burn fat?
A: (p.160) 15-25 minutes for men, 25-40 for women.

Q: Why aren't my muscles getting big, like men's muscles?
A: (p.147) Women's muscles get denser, not larger.

Q: How often should I strength train?
A: (p.113) Two or three times per week, for 30-60 minutes.

Q: What is this pain I get down my arm during lateral raises?
A: (p.79) Sounds like impingement syndrome, a swelling of the rotator cuffs.

I have yet to approach this book with a question and come away without an answer.

I respect Dian Dincin Buchman's research on water healing. So much so, that I mention her work twice in my book, "The Holy Order of Water". While speaking before audiences, I remind them that "water" was once the universal medicine of all people on Earth. Today, water has become more of a "secret" medicine used by those of us who do our reading or who have contact with hydrotherapy in some form.
In my mind, water is being rediscovered as a healing agent for our bodies; mental and emotional health, and souls. In fact, I firmly believe the future of our civilization will be determined by our evolving relationship with water.

Here's a workout with one big difference from all the others: it uses a ball. Among others, the kind of lightweight vinyl ball you often see stacked up in huge cages in toy stores (perhaps the cheapest piece of workout equipment ever). Zake, a yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner, began developing her techniques 20 years ago to help herself recover from a hip injury. She believes that rolling on the ball in various ways stimulates muscles at their origins, causing them to relax and elongate; at the same time, the gentle pressure increases circulation to the muscles and tendons. This book is not a good intro into body rolling if you are a lay person. It is designed to present routines to be used as corrective exercises and for training her instructors.

For a good intro, buy the kit and the DVD and the newer book.

If you are really "motivated" and understand what the muscle origin and insertion is and are interested in rolling through and releasing various levels and layers of muscle tissue, then buy the book. I own both books, and unlike most authors, did not find any redundency between the two.

This is a technical book, as mentioned by the other reviewers. I am a certified personal trainer but I had to think pretty hard sometimes to visualise where I was supposed to be during the exercises. Due to that fact I also purchased Yamuna Zake's second book 'The Ultimate Body Rolling Workout' to fully understand the exercises in lay terms.

I cannot express enough how wonderful Zake's program is. For years I have been working out religiously at the gym but have seen more results in a month of rolling than in a year of cardio, weights and yoga. To think all this time I could have been way ahead of the game if I had known about body rolling.

When I studied for my certification I learnt about self-myofascial release to undo muscle spasms and relax muscles. Zake's work is an extension of that, but by using a ball instead of a foam roll, one can really work muscles that have ceased to function optimally. If you have cellulite you will finally be able to get rid of it as you massage over the connective tissue and break up deposits.

Not only are the physical benefits of body rolling impressive but your emotional wellbeing will be high. After a body rolling session, especially for the back, you are left with an amazing sense of relaxation and a release of all tension.

One can use sports balls to do this workout, however, I recommend purchasing a body rolling ball from yamunabodyrolling.com to get maximum benefit from the program. The balls are very durable and are made of thick rubber - they are much thicker than a regular inflatable ball.

So, I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 because of its very technical nature. However, I give the body rolling workout 10 stars for what it has done for me. Get Zake's second book and you will be very, very happy.

5 out of 5 stars A breakthrough in self-exploration.......2002-02-02

This book is not for the person who wants an easy fix. But for anyone willing to put in the time it is just this side of miraculous. You will likely add inches and flexibility to your ribcage - increasing room for your lungs and other internal organs (I added 1-1/2 inches in 3 weeks). Your posture will improve, and as a result, you will likely add to your height (I added 1/2"). But best of all, you will look and feel rejuvinated. I have done yoga, weight lifting, walking, running - all the normal stuff. Body Rolling beats it all hands down for relaxing and energizing your body (and face - I added a face routine of my own based on the same principles.)

It helps to have a knowledge of anatomy, but, with one of the anatomy books she lists at the back, this can definitely be acquired as you work through the protocols. This will increase the time it takes to learn these routines - I found just working the back to take about 1-1/2 hours the first time or two. But now it takes about a half an hour. Additionally, in areas where you are very stiff, ie: the rib cage, you may end up very sore for awhile, requiring ice and heat, but stick with it, the results are more than worth it.

I figured out on my own that rolling on a ball was a very effective way to deal with my back problems. According to the book I even figured out the exactly correct size ball for my size. I figured that this book would provide some great additional info. Frankly, it probably does, but the terminology and assumed knowledge of anatomy is so great that I quickly got glassy-eyed.

Bottom line: The technique is great, and the book is informative, but unless you have a technical background in body work, or are highly motivated to learn about this technique on your own, it's too difficult of a read to get a lot out of.

This book was not written for the lay person. It was meant for Therapists or anyone else with a good working knowledge of Anatomy. Seek out someone certified in Body Rolling if you don't have these requirements. Make your life easier. Or wait until they release a Video. The basic idea behind Body Rolling is to work from the bone to the tendon to the muscle. Working from the origin to the insertion creating length. It has great therapeutic uses. Don't judge it until you've tried it.

and was used as part of the required reading and foundation of a yoga fitness instructor certification that I took. As a group fitness instructor and instructor trainer, I found the information provided by James Hewitt to be a comprehensive background into the three focus areas of yoga and the information provided was very helpful during class with my students. There were only two drawbacks to this introductory book in my point of view. One was the quality of the illustrations which reminded me of something that had been photocopied and the second was that while interesting, I will say most of the Yoga of Meditation section's information was very foreign in concept to grasp.Perhaps it designed that way on purpose to provide a spark of interest in the reader to pursue further indepth study. Overall, an excellent primer into Yoga theory and practice.

As a newby to yoga one can get lost in the large aray of yoga books available. The complete yoga book is just that "complete". From someone who started out with little knowledge of this art i found the book very easy to read, very informative and very easy to employ the techniques. I would highly recomend this book for one to recieve a thorough grounding in the art that is Yoga.

I got this book to help me choose a suitable color scheme for my office, to improve productivity and provide harmony and contentment.

I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, as the chapters on office colors are not detailed enough for my required purpose, but I found so many other interesting things that I kept it anyway.

Having more than a passing interest in Feng Shui, and aromatherapy, this book was quite entertaining reading, but quite honestly, I didn't dwell too long on the sections on the healing powers of color.

It is well presented, and well illustrated, and covers a wide range of topics related to color, and some you didn't realise were influenced by color.

This is a nice book for anyone interested in learning more about Reiki from a straight forward book with reliable information. The book begins with an explaination of universal life energy, then a nice little history of the Usui system (the traditional system of Reiki healing). The book goes on to give practical advice for new practitioners including a detailed section of b&w photos for hand placements for self, others, as well as animals. The book concludes with the authors' personal Reiki stories which are quite interesting.

    This is a well written and beautifully illustrated book on tai chi. The paper is the nice, glossy type so the photos and illustrations really stand out. But there is a lot of good information here too. There are the usual discussions of tai chi's health and spiritual aspects, but for me the best part of the book was the presentation of the Hou style short form, which I hadn't seen before, and the comparisons at the end of the volume where the author contrasts the different styles, such as Wu, Yang, Sun, Chen, Hou, and so on. Although brief, this gave me a better understanding of the origins, similarities and differences of the major styles. Much of the first part of the book is taken up with discussions of physiology, which, as a physiologist myself, I could have done without, but for the general reader there's some useful information here. One interesting feature is there are about a dozen interviews with different people who have been practicing tai chi for months to many years about how tai chi has helped or influenced them. Overall, a good book for a beginning to intermediate student.
