Book Description
It's dress-up for grown-ups, and the liveliest, most imaginative collection of Halloween costume ideas--447 costume ideas to be exact--from two hip, inveterate lovers of all things Halloween . . . plus dozens of other ideas for enjoying the holiday.
Bridie Clark and Ashley Dodd are the dynamic duo, in or out of capes. For every level of interest, time--and irony--they offer suggestions. There's the ultra-quick: Pin several pair of underwear to a shirt, and voilà, A Chest of Drawers. With a bit more time, wrap yourself in aluminum foil and don a beret--mmm, French Kiss. There are Angels and Devils, all with variations (add roller skates to your Satan costume, and go as Hell on Wheels). Come Hither costumes--Lady Godiva, Chippendales Dancer, Stripper Emerging from a Cake. Celeb sightings, from the Dalai Lama to Madonna (six Madonnas, actually, from all of her phases). Costumes for couples--Sweethearts Caught on Lover's Lane, Fred and Wilma Flintstone--and costumes for whole groups of friends, including how to appear as the Sopranos or the hapless castaways on Gilligan's Island. And for the children, check out Nursery Rhymes, Fairy Tales, and Other Costumes for the Young and Young at Heart.
Finally, for the friend who just can't bear the thought of dressing up but still wants to join the fun, suggest the Time Traveler from the Day Before Halloween.
Customer Reviews:
Cover is Deceiving.......2007-10-11
The cover is the best thing about this book. I felt deceived when I opened up the book. I thought I would find real how-to-do costumes, instead it is filled with a lot of movie clips. Not very practical. A few good ideas but they are hard to find.
the book is okay.......2007-07-06
I was searching for costume ideas and there are undoubtedly a lot of costumes in the book. I think I was looking for costumes that were home-made that looked more store-made. I read the book last Halloween when I purchased it and will most likely pull it out again this Halloween to see if it sparks any ideas.
Quick, easy, fun but some good ideas.......2007-05-23
Some of the costumes in this book are corny, cheesy, and just plain boring BUT there are some fun, creative ideas. There are no real big instruction lists but they are good ideas. I loved this book so much when I checked it out at the library that I had to buy a copy!
447 (Quick and Dirty) Costume Ideas.......2006-09-17
This should only be considered as an idea or concept book for quick or last minute costumes. All are quick and simple so as not to need instructions. If you want an elaborate or detailed costume collection, look elsewhere.
Showcases 447 do-it-yourself costume concepts.......2004-10-12
The collaborative effort of Halloween costume experts and enthusiasts Bridie Clark and Ashley Dodd, The Halloween Handbook: Dress-Up For Grown-Ups showcases 447 imaginative, easy-to-make, do-it-yourself costume concepts. From traditional favorites such as Wonder Woman or Peter Pan, to more eyebrow-raising unique costumes like the One-Night Stand (the costumegoer appears as an actual stand with lampshade over the head, bra and pantyhouse dangling on the tablecloth) or the Green Card (wearing a large green sandwich board humorously displaying a parody what a real green card looks like). Black-and-white photographs illustrate fun, zany, sometimes edgy ideas with practical suggestions to efficiently and frugally make a Halloween guise to remember. Especially recommended not only for Halloween, but as a source of ideas for costume parties year round or even school and community theater apparel.
Book Description
Halloween was once considered an adult practice referred to as "going a-souling," but it was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money. The tradition of trick-or-treating can be traced back to the early 1900s, but the decorations of all things scary began much before that. Some time around the late 1800s pumpkins, witches, black cats, and ghouls began appearing in parades, adorning city streets, and decorating homes.
Mark Ledenbach shares his collection of vintage Halloween collectibles for the first time in this new identification and price guide. Nearly 1,250 vintage collectibles are vividly displayed in full-color, with the majority of them having never before been published in previous works profiling Halloween memorabilia. Each masterfully photographed item includes manufacturing country, company, and dates; specific measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch; and reproduction alerts, item iterations, and more.
* Nearly 1,250 collectibles displayed in full-color * Features captions with manufacturing data for each item displayed * Includes different marks and packaging used by companies, such as Beistle, Dennison, Chein, US Metal Toy, T. Cohn, and Kirchhof
Customer Reviews:
Top Vintage Halloween Guide.......2006-08-26
When I started discovering vintage Halloween items, I came upon Mark Ledenbach's book. It became my leading guide while investigating on eBay. On his web site I could contact him an ask for advice. He was very friendly and helpful. The photos and lay out of his book are fantastic and it is better organized then other books I own. I could not have enjoyed the beautiful graphics and usual, rare items if it were not for this book. You must purchase this whether you are a serious collector or not. Have fun!
The Best Halloween Collectibles Guide.......2005-07-17
Price guides frequently suffer from poor photography. This book breaks the mold showing clear color photographs of amazing piece's in Mark's Collection. Halloween ephemera continues to be a popular collectible and this book should be part every collectors library.
Fabulous reference for the seller!.......2004-11-16
What a wonderful book! I sell on ebay and found the book to be highly informative and the prices pretty accurate for most of the items I have come across. A must have resource for anyone who buys, sells, or collects vintage Halloween!
Extremely well researched book- beautiful!.......2003-08-13
As a collector of Vintage Halloween, this is the most comprehensive and well researched book on the topic to date that I have found. The layout is spectacular and well thought out. Photographs and descriptions are superb. The "tab" index that identifies the chapters makes it easy to find a particular item and the rarity rating is a wonderful addition for serious collectors. Almost all of the items pictured are in first-rate condition, well-described and logically grouped. If you are going to buy one book on Vintage Halloween, this is the best!
A Guide for the Rare and Unusual in Halloween Collectibles.......2003-07-20
I am impressed with this book. The research and documentation is so thoroughly done that I feel I can use this as the definitive guide for my Halloween collection. I like also that there are things in this book that I haven't seen anywhere else. This is a great catalogue of an extensive collection, and is a must for anyone who collects antique Halloween. Well done!

Book Description
A whimsical array of ghosts and goblins, spooks and skeletons, vamps and vampires parade through this unparalleled collection of more than 100 years of American Halloween attire. From Little Bo Peep with lamb in hand to beatniks and pirates, from monsters and witches to clowns and animals, this veritable "carnival" of costumes visually captures All Hallows' Eve like no other book before.
In her celebration of Halloween revelry, photographer Phyllis Galembo never settles for the ordinary; here instead are evocative scenes of dressed-to-scare young trick-or-treaters "modeling" their disguises, of undead spirits haunting their surroundings, and of costumes spanning over a century that take on an eerie new creepiness thanks to special lighting effects. Accompanying the costume shots is a history of this always-popular holiday and an essay placing the work in the wider context of fashion and costume. Of interest to enthusiasts, designers, and students alike, this devilishly diverting book is the perfect gift for all Halloween aficionados.

Customer Reviews:
George and the Man With the Yellow Hat Go to a Halloween Party.......2007-10-09
Illustrated by Martha Weston in the style of Curious George creator H.A. Rey, Curious George Goes to a Costume Party follows George and the man with the yellow hat as they attend a Halloween party at Mrs. Gray's house.
What Mrs. Gray forgot to tell them, though, is that it was a COSTUME party! Mrs. Gray takes George upstairs to look through a trunk to find a costume, and George tries on many of them!
Will he be a ballerina? Nah, too silly. What about Frankenstein? Nah, too scary! What about a firefighter or a rabbit? No...one was too big and the other too small.
Which costume does Curious George ultimately select? And what happens when a white ghost goes sliding down the bannister to the surprise of the guests waiting below?
You'll have to read Curious George Goes to a Costume Party to find out!
If your child is a fan of the Rey books, as well as the PBS series, they'll no doubt enjoy this delightful book celebrating Halloween.
Typical Curious Fun!.......2002-09-23
At first I was a little suspicious about this book, "illustrated in the style of H.A.Rey by Martha Weston." I didn't want anybody messing with my dearly loved friend, Curious George! I am glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This book tells the Halloween adventures of our curious little pal, as he and the man with the yellow hat go to a costume party. At first, George finds it a bit scary because he doesn't understand about make-believe dress-up, but then he gets into the fun of it. They need to borrow costumes from the hostess of the party and George has lots and lots of choices. Due to George's typical curiosity, the party becomes much more lively than the hostess intended! The story and the illustrations are true to the style we know and love from the original Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey. The pictures are brimming with action and excitement and colorful fun. This story has the added benefit of introducing some Halloween characters that little ones may be frightened of and showing that they are really just pretend and taking the scariness out of them. It also shows fun Halloween customs like jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples and other party activities. This is a real treat for Curious George fans and for fans of Halloween. Don't miss it.
nice halloween alternative, with George.......2002-07-08
This Curious George book is a nice alternative to other Halloween books, because it explores Halloween traditions other than trick-or-treating.
Curious George and the man with the yellow hat go to a friends house for a Halloween party, and it is a costume party. George and his friend have to borrow costumes from the hostess, and of course George's curiosity gets him in trouble. The guests play games like bobbing for apples.
This book is funny, like most curious george books. Children aged three and four who are just becoming familiar with Halloween will appreciate George's antics, and learn about halloween and costume parties at the same time.
There is nothing in this book that scared my son, aged 3. I don't think there is anything in here that would scare the average child of 3 or 4 years old. It's wholesome Halloween fun.

Customer Reviews:
Halloween fun for the family.......2004-09-11
There are a number of Halloween books out on the market for decorating, baking and costume making, but this is one of the few that actually has something new in it!
The crafts are clever, but actually look doable wtih things you might already have on hand. The costumes ideas are fun and innovative, the food ideas are also really cute, but not overly-complicated. While some classic ideas never die, this book puts a nice twist on things like "body parts" games.
Of course, the ideas come from the monthly magazine that Disney produces, Family Fun, and if you get the magazine, you'll have already seen alot of these things in print or on their website. Still, the book is nicely layed-out, easy to flip through and a good resource of party and costume ideas for both kids and their grown-ups.
Very Pleased.......2001-10-16
This book is an awesome resource for make-at-home costumes and decorations. The ideas are so cute, easy to follow, and where else can you find a recipe for slime?
SADLY DISAPPOINTED.......2001-09-29
If you own the Disney Family Fun Crafts book and the Family Fun Parties book, you have seen most of the ideas in this book. I was really excited to get this book but there werent many new ideas. :(
Great Ideas.......2000-08-09
This was great! My daughter & I love Halloween and when we saw this we bought it right away. There are so many wonderful ideas. A must have! There were a lot of spooky things to do with foods and great little ideas for those little helpers to decorate your home with lots of memories! You have to get this one!

Customer Reviews:
Celebrate Halloween With Dora.......2005-09-08
Dora's favorite part of Halloween is dressing up in a costume. She's very excited because today is Halloween, and she and her family are having a costume party!
However, Boots can't figure out which costume to wear! He's debating between a clown, a super hero, and a baseball player. Which one will he choose for the costume party?
Dora visits her friends and helps them find items missing from their costumes. For example, Tico wants to be a cowboy...but he's missing his star badge and cowboy hat.
This story encourages children to:
*Locate missing items
*Identify squares, cirles and rectangles
*Learn Spanish words such as una fresa (strawberries) and las uvas (grapes)
*Complete a 3-color pattern
*Count to 5 in Spanish
Dora's Costume Party! is an engaging paper back book following Dora as she interacts with her friends, parents, cousin, grandmother, and baby twin siblings. My son has asked me to read this book to him every night since we got it, and I'm sure other youngsters will love it, too.

Great Disguises.......2007-05-13
I will be using disguises in a summer program at the library. The instuctions for the glasses and beards are very easy to understand and the pictures are fantastic.
Not inspiring.......2007-01-04
The book contains great illustrations and instructions to create several costumes, but we were uninspired to create anything from the book or based on the book. I was looking for more inspiration, tips and tricks to create other costumes. This book wasn't what I sought.
Not just for Halloween.......2006-10-20
This is a wonderful book for the creative spirit or crafty mom. Instead of spending your hard earned cash on flimsy costumes that may get only one wear, you can make your own. It includes a multitude of colorful photos and easy to follow, step-by-step instructions to make many exciting and unique costumes. Some of them include: a king, robot, knight in shining armour, magician, cowboy and hula girl. This would be a great book to use for Halloween costumes as well as for dress up and role play. Many of the costumes can be made by kids themselves. It will save you money and the kids will have a great time.
Clever Ideas using Recyclables.......2005-09-20
I enjoyed this book because most of the items for making the costumes you can find around the house.

Gilbert.......2007-10-06
Let me tell you a feel-good story. It involves love - the love of a mother for her daughter, and a child's passionate, exhilarated, uncomplicated love for books. This is the true story of Deb Raymer, and her daughter Sabrina, and how I came to know them. This holiday season, I am grateful that Deb has shared parts of her story, and that through her mom, Sabrina has shared a wonderful cast of characters previously unknown to me.
A couple of months ago, Deb asked me to help her find a series of books. All Sabrina wants for Christmas is "Gilbert". Deb needed to order multiple copies of each book in the collection, she explained. Sabrina loves the "Gilbert" books so much, that she reads them to pieces. Literally. While I am always thrilled to see someone who loves books that much, that's not even the best part of the story. Sabrina is mentally and physically handicapped. She has a job at Partners in Progress that she enjoys. Whenever she rides to work on the bus, she has a "Gilbert" book - or two, or three - in her bag, and she "reads" them to the other passengers. Sabrina has memorized her favorite books. Her mother needs to keep buying new copies of them because Sabrina pages through them so much and so often that they fall apart.
Gilbert, the hedgehog, and his sister Lola, are creations from the paintbrush and pen of Diane de Groat. This author/illustrator started working in children's literature by doing the artwork for some well-known children's authors, such as Lois Lowry and Eve Bunting. De Groat started on her Gilbert series in 1996 with "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink", which is still Sabrina's favorite.
I hadn't heard of de Groat, and Deb gave my literary ego a boost by reassuring me that I'm not alone. Often, when Deb and Sabrina have searched for Gilbert in libraries and bookstores, he is nowhere to be found. So, it's time to spread the word. Diane de Groat has created a fun, inexpensive series with sympathetic characters, situations that kids can relate to, and a little lesson that doesn't come across like a 2"x 4" to the forehead. The titles themselves produce a smile for kids and adults alike. Now there's a Gilbert for every season in a child's life. A reader can start school with Gilbert in "Brand New Pencils, Brand New Books" and end the school year with the companion volume, "No More Pencils, No More Books! No More Teacher's Dirty Looks!" In these final months of the year, we have been enjoying "We Gather Together, Now Please Get Lost" for Thanksgiving, and "Jingle Bells, Homework Smells" for Christmas.
The Gilbert books have been so successful that now his sister Lola has her own series, books for slightly younger children, that often include Gilbert, but from Lola's point-of-view. When Lola can't decide what to be for Halloween, she finally decides to be "a Gilbert", because she knows he's an original. I think Sabrina and Lola are on to something good.

A Three-Year-Old's Favorite.......2002-05-11
This is a terrific book, and not just for Halloween. The story of Gilbert the opossum and his mishaps was cute enough to reread several hundred times. I know this because my 3-year-old fell in love with Gilbert and Lola and we're still reading the book in May. I'm looking forward to reading deGroat's other Gilbert books, but it took me a long time to find them online. If you're looking for more Gilbert books, here's the list: Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink (1996), Happy Birthday to You, You Belong in a Zoo (1999), Jingle Bells, Homework Smells (2000), We Gather Together...Now Please Get Lost! (2001), Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite! (2002).
