4 out of 5 stars Excellent information and examples.......2007-06-01

This is a great book on depression, stress and anxiety. I had a little "baby blues" after my first child was born, so I checked this book out from the library. I liked it so much that I bought it for reference and to lend out to my friends and family. It is full of very good information on depression, and the examples are very interesting. It reads slowly at first because it is so dense with information and new ideas, but if you can get through the first 100 pages, it moves a lot faster. It seems like we all know someone who suffers from these problems, and we all have them ourselves from time to time. I recommend this book without inhibition to anyone interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars the instinct to love this book...........2007-05-25

Reading this book, reiterated a regimen I once used to follow. Taking fish oil, (as one of the procedures). Could not believe how effective it was. Here I am on one of the worst days of my menstrual cycle (usually) day 27, smiling, relaxed, and totally happy, without a care in the world. So unusual is that for me. This book has a few other solutions such as excercise and acupuncture, and one of them is bound to work for you as well. Thanks David Servan-Schreiber, for writing this book!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but slightly impractical.......2007-05-04

I really enjoyed reading this book & bought it for my nephew who is studying psychology, but I wonder if you would ever find a practioner of some of these methods?

Overall a good read to make you look at current psychiatric treatments from a different perspective: is there a better way than Prozac?

5 out of 5 stars The Instinct to Heal.......2007-04-10

So gratifying to read that science backs up much of what some of us have been doing for many years. Easy read for a sometimes complex subject.

5 out of 5 stars Opening to our healing powers.......2007-01-12

Having been aware of a life threatening illness for more than 15 years, comlementary therapies have been healing and empowering. Aware that we find our own path, but that it is enhanced when we are open to hear others, I have been drawn to many teachers and books, taking what resonates with me. I normally don't initiate others; interests, but if they want to know more about me, I share that. In the case of "Instinct to Heal", it is a book I am directing and giving to others, as i do with "Love, Medicine & Miracles". It is not a bookd only for those confrtoning depression.

Psychiatric syndromes like depression, anxiety, and bipolar are explained along with reasons why certain drugs are used instead of others.

About two pages are devoted to each medication. Common, expected side effects are described. For example, Paxil is said to take two to four weeks to cause improvement, even though side effects may appear in one to two days. Fatigue, weakness, and sexual dysfunction are the most common side effects. Your symtoms may return if you stop taking Paxil--even if taper off the medication gradually.

If you want to know how exactly drugs work, Appendix A shows the part of the synapse/neuron that is involved for each of the major classes of psychiatric drugs.

strong points: i'm a therapist who has many patients taking psychiatric meds, and while i don't prescribe them myself (nor have any desire to), i do need to know at least a thumbnail sketch about most of them. this book does the trick for me. it avoids the irrelevant and obscure detail of the Physician's Desk Reference and hits on the necessary basics (dosages, side effects, dangers, potential "benefits", brand versus generic names - and it has a good index!).

that said: this book, like all others of its ilk, almost completely avoids touching on the notion that medication in most cases can be terribly anti-therapeutic, and is prescribed by doctors for much the same reason drug addicts prescribe themselves the assortment of illicit drugs - symptom relief. these drugs cure no one, just keep people happily numb and in check, and are basically prescribed to help people improve their level of functioning IN THE SHORT TERM. if it were up to me, i'd restructure the whole system and do away with most of these meds entirely.

there's a funny thing i've noticed: when a patient comes to me and wants both therapy and medication (say, Zoloft), i can almost certainly surmise that he or she has less motivation for doing deep inner work (which produces the long-term gain) than someone who wants therapy alone and is resistant to taking medication. doing therapy (learning to know oneself at one's deepest level of being) is a painful process. medication takes away pain. you do the math.

and as for that idea that being on psych meds gives someone a "platform from which to do deep inner work"? as for evidence, i haven't seen it. but i do think it's a great rationalization!

For the person who is contemplating phsychiatric treatment, "medication" can have an intimidating impression especially if it is a foreign subject. The book will help you make you this important decision by giving you updated information on the newest prescription drugs. For those who are uncomfortable, alternatives and non-drug options are discussed as well. A wide range of psychiatric syndromes are covered: Anxiety disorders, ADD, Bipolar, Depression, Developmental disorders, Drug dependence, Eating disorders, Insomnia, Pshychosis, and even Alzheimer's Disease. A wide range is covered..

Book Description

Recent discoveries about the emotional brain show we can heal naturally from stress and depression. Award-winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., presents seven methods for faster, more dramatic, and permanent results for patients who want to leave suffering behind and live joyful, happy lives. The methods presented in this book, taken from case histories, have all been proven to work in clinical tests. They are based on the self-healing mechanisms of the emotional brain, which controls the body, as opposed to the cognitive brain, which manipulates symbols and language. Dr. Servan-Schreiber considers the influence of the heart upon the brain, explores the use of EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing) to recover from trauma, and explains how to reset your biological clock to avoid symptoms from seasonal depression. We learn how the biochemistry of touch and love can heal emotional wounds, and we also learn how to use acupuncture, nutrition, and exercise to control our moods. An international bestseller, this is the first book on the market to answer the public's questions about the new alternatives to conventional psychopharmaceuticals, as well as traditional talk therapy. By reprogramming their emotional brains, people struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression can rediscover the balance and well-being needed to transform their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The CURE for depression.......2007-03-20

I used to be severely depressed and non-functional for many years. I discovered on my own that Nutrition is the most important thing to cure depression. It's especially important to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. So learn a lot about nutrition! The second thing is to deal with your psychological issues. I recommend reading many, many self help books until your psychological issues are all resolved. I am 100% cured of depression now and very busy running my own business! And I did it all myself by eating very healthy food and reading many great self help books!

Drugs and talk "therapy" are NOT the answer. THEY DON'T WORK!!! THEY CURE NOTHING!!! They only make MONEY for the psychiatrists and psychologists! Books are SO MUCH better than worthless "therapists" that just sit there uselessly and listen to you talk and refuse to answer questions or give advice. These people are only interested in making a living! If they cured you, then they'd stop making a living, wouldn't they? So it is in their best interest NOT to cure you! And I have found in my experience that they truly do NOT want to cure you, they have no intention of curing you, and they expend no effort in looking for any cures!

3 out of 5 stars interessant mais lacunaire.......2005-05-20

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fascinating and well-researched information.......2005-04-14

I tend to be a bit skeptical of self-help books because I have seen so many sloppy "new-age" versions, but this one is definitely on a different plane. Using the workings of the limbic (emotional) brain as his organizing principle, the author covers the therapeutic effects of diverse topics, from acupuncture, exercise, diet, light therapy, enhancing communication skills, and community service, to the lesser known practices of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and cardiac coherence. All of the chapters are very well presented with generous reliance on scientific information and studies, so that even being a skeptic accustomed to picking apart scientific literature, all the approaches struck me as at least worth exploring. Because many of these therapies are inexpensive, take time to explain, and are not capable of being patented, the business and medical establishments tend to underplay them. Many a time I have gone to the doctor for some problem or other, and left with a prescription for a medication that gave me side effects worse than the underlying condition. If this book were taken to heart, many people who go to their internist with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and pain, would get a prescription to exercise and meditate, instructions on how to eat more beneficially for their brain chemistry, and advice on how to reduce interpersonal conflicts. Even if you're not depressed (I am not and bought the book for someone close to me), it is a fascinating and rewarding read, and suggests many ways (some extremely simple) in which we can enhance the quality of life for ourselves and those around us.

5 out of 5 stars First Book To Help Me.......2004-11-25

I have been battling depression (aka: The Big D) for over two years - since I was riffed - and this is the first book to actually help me. A lot of the books on depression seemed to be too academic. Or they focused on somebody else's depression. This book really talked to me. There are valuable suggestions, lots of practical advice, enough experimental data to make it sound like it might actually work for me, and no preaching. I highly recomend it to anybody who is fighting depression or knows somebody who is.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, alternatives that I can live with.......2004-07-23

Dr. Servan-Schreiber walks you through various, alternative methods for dealing with depression. He explains everything in easy-to-understand language without talking down to the reader. He combines common sense approaches such as nutrition, exercise and meditation with more state of the art methods such as EMDR, dawn and stimulation therapies. He also makes a solid case for acupuncture, which I've always believed was great for alleviating some of depression's more stubborn symptoms. I recommend this on my Depression site at BellaOnline and just had to put my two cents worth in here. Buy this book!

    Book Description

The National Drug Control Policy has failed its two major functions (supply reduction and demand reduction) due to faulty assumptions regarding nearly every aspect of the alcohol and drug fields, charges author Fisher. Yet in spite of overwhelming evidence of this failure policy makers have strongly resisted discussing major changes to the assumptions that underly current policy, because of political pressure, bias and philosophical intransigence, he adds. Fisher discusses controversial topics and defends uncommon approaches in chapters focused on subjects including legalization, harm reduction, the futility of supply reduction, the problem of underage drinking and effectiveness of treatment and prevention. He proposes a new national policy for drug control, including elimination of the war' metaphor, inclusion of alcohol in the mandate, conceptualization of addiction as a public health problem, utilization of harm reduction principles to guide policy and discontinuation of approaches that isolate drug and alcohol problems from their connection to broader social issues such as poverty. In this work, the premises of the current National Drug Control Strategy are challenged, and both Democratic and Republican administrations across the last 10 years are critically examined. Statements of the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Strategy are critiqued. Major points include that there is no evidence the NDCS has achieved any of its goals, that harm reduction should be its guiding principle, and supply reduction should not be part of the national strategy.

4 out of 5 stars Criminization of drug abuse has created more problems than it solved.......2007-05-12

Unbelievable how unsuccessful our war on drugs is going! Not only has our drug containment policy failed but it has caused significant problems in countries where the drugs are grown. Until we address the biggest drug problem, alcohol with its special interest lobby, we will not be successful.

All drugs are not the same and using one approach does not fit all. Until we
try other approaches to assess which ones maybe a better alternative, we are stuck in this endless drug war.

      Book Description

How is a parent to know what to say-and when and how to say it-when talking to teens about all those big, scary topics that are tough to discuss? In researching this book for the past 3 years, 17-year-old Rhett Godfrey interviewed hundreds of teenagers about how their parents talk to them about 'the big stuff': sex, drugs, privacy, school problems, cigarettes and alcohol, divorce and remarriage, and self-expression. Now Rhett reports back-in frank and surprising conversations-how teens -really feel about these touchy subjects. What's more, he shares the best methods that parents have used to open up dialogue behind closed doors. Rhett's mother, #1 New York Times bestselling author Neale S. Godfrey (Money Doesn't Grow on Trees), then helps parents make sense out of what teens say they want from parents-from her own experience as well as from interviews with experts. In the first book to ever take us inside the teen mind to help us understand these topics from their point of view, parents will discover how to establish an environment of honesty and open dialogue in their homes so they can better guide their kids through the rocky road of adolescence by understanding: l Why teenagers think oral sex isn't -really sex and alcohol is not a drug. And how to convince them otherwise. l How to correct the most common mistake parents make in talking with their kids about drugs. l How to still be on good terms with your son after his mohawk grows out and piercings close.

The description of this book states it's for parents "whether they sobered up last year or 15 years ago".
The introduction says it will address families whose children were not affected by the addiction as well as those who were. It doesn't.
I got this book in the hopes it would help me with whether and how to talk to my kids about my addiction. It didn't.
I've been clean and sober for 15 years now and it's time to talk to my preteen kids before they get into the same trouble I did. Unfortunately this book focuses only on parents whose kids have suffered due to their addictions and not at all on those whose addictions predate their kids.
It may be a good book for some, but it wasn't at all what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars What Recovering Parents Should Tell Their Kids.......2004-01-13

Black, an addiction expert known for her work on the adult children of alcoholics (It Will Never Happen to Me), here shifts her focus to recovering parents, in turn addressing the needs of their children. Based on the sensible idea that parents struggling with addiction face unique challenges in fostering antidrug/alcohol attitudes, her latest book acknowledges the genetic component of addiction while stating that the process is not inevitable. Provided are useful tools for assessment (e.g., "the family tree") and remediation grounded in the 12-step program philosophy. Early chapters review current information on brain chemistry, generational vulnerability, and phenomena such as multiple addictions, tolerance levels, relapse, and blackouts. The emphasis then moves to straightforward and realistic advice about self-forgiveness, making amends for past behavior, and new ways of relating to loved ones. Personal stories drawn from five diverse families are used throughout; limited references are provided at the conclusion. This candid and hope-filled book merits strong consideration by large public libraries and specialized collections given the prevalence of some form of addictive behavior in families.

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have handbook for parents!.......2001-10-11

If parents play an active role in their children's lives, their children will come to know that they can depend on their parents, especially during times when difficult choices need to be made. Playing an active role involves discussing important matters, such as making choices about drugs and other important related issues that face our children today.

In the book, "Ten Talks Parents Must Have With Their Children About Drugs and Choices," parents are given many situations and examples to help initiate such important discussions with their children. Drug use, peer pressure, and other negative influences are covered, and examples from other parents are given so readers can try a variety of different methods with their own children. The book explains what drugs are, how they alter your feelings, about making choices, and more. Readers can find solutions by learning how other parents have handled similar situations.

My ParenTime recommends the book, "Ten Talks Parents Must Have With Their Children About Drugs and Choices" by Dominic Cappello and Xenia G. Becher, MSW, CSW -- it is clearly written and easy-to-understand, direct, and very helpful. Most importantly, it provides solutions on how to "teach" children how not to make negative choices.

5 out of 5 stars Great conversation starter.......2001-09-08

I have two high school boys who are impossible to talk to. But this book gave me lots of ideas for starting conversations about alcohol and drugs. Actually the book got me thinking about what my parents said to me (or didn't) about drugs! Worthwhile reading.

5 out of 5 stars I actually got my daughter to TALK!.......2001-09-08

Money well spent . . . I liked the no-nonsense approach. Tried several of the talks and SURPRISE my daughter actually responded. I also liked hearing from other moms about their experiences. It's a fast read and the illustrations are so much fun. I wish I would have had this book two years ago when my daughter started middle school and being exposed to drugs and whatever.
