Book Description
What does the atonement mean, practically speaking? How is Christ the answer to a strained relationship with a spouse, child, parent, or sibling? What if I am being mistreatedhow can the atonement help me cope with that? How can I discover the desire to repent when I don't feel the need to repent" And how can I invite others to do the same? These are the challenging, difficult questions of daily life, questions to which the gospel must provide answers if it is to have living, cleansing, redeeming power.
The Peacegiver is a book about the answers to these questions. Unlike other books about the atonement, The Peacegiver is written as an extended parable. It tells the story of a man struggling, with the help of a loved one, to come unto Christ. IN reading the rich details of his often difficult journey, we find ourselves embarked on a personal journey of our own. His questions are our questions; his problems, our problems; his discoveries, our discoveries. Along the way, the truths of the gospel are unfolded with surprising clarity and power, illuminating aspects of the atonement that few of us have ever heard or considered before. These surprising implications show us the way to deep and lasting peace in our hearts and homes.
"My peace I give unto you," the Savior declared. The Peacegiver explores in a deeply personal way what we must do to receive the peace he stands willing to give.

Excellent analogy of the atonement.......2007-10-05
It started as a story I could relate to. But then it got a little odd, but I pushed through it and it came together and the concept was worth the approach.
I thought I understood the atonement, but not like this. There was an example provided that explained the atonement in a completely new way--it was one of those rare occasions where there was a dramatic paradign shift and my traditional understanding was blown away.
This new understanding takes away some of the pain for being wronged by someone dear to me and makes it easier to forgive that person.
This is a must read! Absolutely amazing. .......2007-07-29
This is a must read for every Christian who really wants to understand the atonement of Jesus Christ. I am not a big book reader, but when I read this I could not put it down. I have it on CD and have listened to it three times since I read the book. The doctrines are ones that most Christians (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are Christian)know but have never thought of in this context. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has not read it.
The Peacegiver: How Christ offers to Heal Hearts and Homes.......2007-05-10
Excellent book to give perspective to your relationships. Helps in the thinking process of "What would Christ do?" I highly recommend the book to everyone.
can't say enough about this book!!!.......2007-05-08
Excellent read. I was pleased with the way the author tied the gospel of Jesus Christ into simple, easy to understand principles. I have recommended this to several friends. Don't hesitate to buy it.
5 stars doesn't do this book justice.......2007-01-30
This is simply one of the very books I've ever read, of any genre. It's been out for quite some time but I recently pulled it from the shelf and re-read it. (I think I've read one or two books more than once in my life.)
Whether you're married or not, whether you're active in your religion or not, this book will force you to evaluate how you interact with those you love. This book was simply a mirror for me. Perhaps that's why I needed to read it twice! There were lessons for me on every page.
The book is a glorious lesson on (and testimony of) the Atonement of Christ. That's the best review I can think to give.

Book Description
You speak for all of us who are tearing our hair out about the generation that separates us from our beloved grandchildren. Grandma Sally, Moorestown, New Jersey Being a grandmother, writes Bryna Nelson Paston, is not one of life's free choices. You can pick your pet, your alma mater, and your spouse. You can decide when to have kids and how many, if you're careful. You can be a doctor, lawyer, mountain climber, or plumber. But when and where you become a grandma is your kids' decision.
Becoming a grandma is like getting a subpoena. You don't expect it. You don't know how to respond. You know you must be mature and accept it. Being a grandma, though, is as close as many of us ever get to perfection. There is only one little problemthe generation in the middle. Dealing with your child and his or her spouse while you become the most relevant person in your grandchild's life is tricky at best and downright impossible at worst.
From that unique point of view, Paston has written a delightful book that explains the rules for grandmothers to assure they will be an important part of their grandchildren's lives. We have a window of opportunity as grandparents, she writes, usually five years, or maybe more if you're lucky. So you have to make your move fast and decisively. Your kids and their spouses will intrude, interrupt, and interfere. But persevere. Circumvent them, do exactly what you want, and liewith dignity, I might add. Whatever it takes. Promise anything, but get the kid.
How to Be the Perfect Grandma is a humorous, anecdotal gift book for grandmothers, grandmothers-to-be, grandmother wannabes, anyone who has a grandmotherand, of course, grandfathers. FAMILY; GRANDPARENTS ILLUSTRATED 51/2 X 61/2, 144 PAGES HARDCOVER

Finally - 'Nana' gets it!.......2007-05-18
This little book was very helpful with my frustrations and gave me a better understanding of where my place is. It made me laugh and gave me several ah-ha moments. I was extremely close to my own Mother-in-law, so I couldn't figure out why things were going as they were when my son had children. This is a must have for the Grandma on Daddy's side.
Perfect Mother's Day gift.......2004-05-04
It's the perfect gift for the daughter or daughter-in-law in your life. This amusing and realistic set of incidents illustrates the dynamics of extended family life from a grandmother's viewpoint. It will make the reader laugh and cry. It's more than a one-time read. It's the book you will look at over the years to always find a new insight into living with grandchildren and their parents. "Perfect grandmas" always buy this book for adult children and their spouses.
Great Gift for New Grandmom.......2004-04-13
I bought this book and fell down laughing, so I bought it for all my friends, new grandmas, experienced grandmas, even one grandma-to-be.The author has shared her anecdotes and they are hysterical. In the mix, are tips on grandmothering and advice on how to follow the rules laid down by our grandchildren's parents without losing our minds. If you like humor with an edge, you'll love this book.
I beg to differ...this book is not that funny.......2003-09-19
I bought this book, planning to give it to my mother-in-law, who is a grandmother-to-be (I'm 3 months pregnant). It had gotten positive reviews from others, and sounded cute and humorous. After reading it, however, I did not find it cute or humorous. It is basically a collection of one grandmother's anecdotes about two of her grandkids, along with quasi-generalized advice about being a grandmother. I understand that some of the book was meant to be written with a satirical tone, but advice such as, "never let anything bad happen to the kids on your watch...but as we all know bad things happen to good grandmothers...if it's just you and the child, lie," and "check with your grandchildren to make sure you are winning the grandma race [against the child's other grandma]...if...they say they like the other one better, buy them something they've been wanting..." just doesn't strike me as being very funny--more like irresponsible and mean-spirited. I suppose some readers will find this humorous, but this definitely is not my brand of humor.
Giggled out loud..................2003-08-20
while reading this book---I didn't put it down once I started...very short reading..only about an hour or two. I especially like the chapter about how being the Mom's Mom gives you automatic rights to the child! Since this is my first Grandchild, and it is my daughter giving bith, I'M IN!!! Loved it!! It is a perfect little book for a Grandma-to-be....I've already passed it along to a few friends.

Product Description
Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07
The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.
Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10
John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.
When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.
Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.
This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26
As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.
Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.
Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18
I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.

The Most Craziest Story.......2007-06-15
Twelve year old Gretchen and her annoying stepbrother Clark go to live with their incredibly annoying grandparents. Gretchen's dad and Clark's mom are leaving for Atlanta to do some work together. While on the way to their grandparents house, which by the way is on a swamp, the two young ones complain on how they have to stay there. They do not want to stay their because of their grandpa Eddie and grandma Rose's smelly swamp. So many things went wrong; Grandpa Eddie was completly deaf and they could not hear a word they said. There were so many rooms to explore; so many creatures were crawling around in them. But let me stop now i will just let you read the book to find out the rest of the horrible things that happen in this excellent book!
I like this book because it was full of laughter, scarieness, and adventure, lots and lots of adventure. Actually all of R. L. Stine's books are full of adventureand are also intriguing and excitement.
If you like adventure or you think Monsters are real or cool, How to Kill a Monster is the perfect book for you! Make sure you tell a friend!
A Chilling story.......2006-05-07
How to Kill a Monster is a fabulous book. It is a spine tingling, heart breathing, and breathe taking scary book. It is about two is my favorite o kids, Gretchen who is 12 and Clark who is 12 went to visit their grand parents. The grandpa is my favorite character because he is nearly deaf and the grandma just likes to cook. The two kids had some trouble getting there thought. At the house, they found a locked door and wanted to check it out. However, their grandparents tell them to stay away. Can you guess what happened? Yah they open the door and something comes out. When Gretchen and Clark go downstairs, they are locked in. Do they get out? You will have to read the book to find out. In my opinion people 9 and up should read this book. I just thought it was a wonderful book.

Although there is no real way to tell someone how to cope when they lose a grandchild, this book is a good start down the path. I can't write too much about this - too painful. But if, God forbid, you find yourself or someone you know in this terrible situation, there is not a lot out there for the pain of grandparents who grieve for their grandchild and for the pain their child is experiencing - this book WILL help. Highly recommended reading for all grandparents!.......2000-03-05
In The 12 Rules Of Grandparenting: A New Look At Traditional Roles And How To Break Them, Susan Kettman examines the "rules" of grandparenting and seeks to clarify, explain, and reform in a non-threatening way what should be expected of grandparents -- and what not to expect. Advice is offered on such sensitive subjects as developing a positive grandparenting attitude while maintaining a life of your own; babysitting (and how to say "no" when necessary); fun projects and activities to enjoy with grandchildren; giving to grandchildren without spoiling them; techniques for scolding or disciplining without hurt feelings; involvement in situations of divorce, custody or illness. Enhanced with an appendix of grandparent support organizations, The 12 Rules Of Grandparenting is "must" reading for anyone who has become a grandparent and wishes to fully enjoy the experience, or must deal with disruption in the lives of their grandchildren and in need of sound advice on what to do.
Hit the nail on the head!.......2000-02-20
This book tells it like it is! Ms. Kettmann takes twelve common cultural beliefs about grandparenting and turns them upside down, challenging the reader to either accept or reject the ideas based on their own value system. Her background as a child development specialist really comes through. This is not just a book of opinions. It is a collection of ideas that span her long career working with families. A dynamite section on things to do with grandchildren is rated by cost, age and attention span. After twenty years since having kids around the house and I am not ashamed to admit that I HAVE forgotten how to juggle it all. For anyone who wants to grandparent without guilt and get through the difficult issues (discipline, spoiling, difficult parents this book is a must!

While it's easy to say, Write a letter, pick up the phone, send an email, it's difficult to know what to talk about with a three-year-old grandchild who lives across the country or a nine-year-old who's too busy with after-school activities to keep in touch. This guide to long-distance grandparenting is full of ideas for maintaining relationships with far-flung grandkids. A new chapter gives ideas on using the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
Grandma Hall of Fame nominee!.......2003-01-13
I found this book at the library when I most needed it, and could hardly believe my luck - I'm buying a copy from Amazon to send to my parents, who feel they have little connection to our daughter despite our visits to Europe, exchanging of photos, etc. They are "deeply hurt" that she shows little interest in coming to the telephone when they call and give me a guilt trip about it, which I refuse to pass on to her. Guilt trips do not make for good heirlooms! I am open to suggestions however, and in this book Mrs. Wassermann offers the kind of priceless wisdom that I thought only exist in stories, and her ideas are wonderful and very easy for all parties to use. They can also be applied to a long distance relationship with a niece/nephew - I have a niece in Europe and was happy to read that I have been doing exactly what Mrs. Wassermann suggests. Respect & No guilt are the two key phrases here. Grandparents need to respect their children and grandchildren, and in return they will most likely have a wonderful long distance relationship with everyone. If there were more people like Mrs. Wassermann, surely there would be far greater numbers of happy families. The edition I checked out at the library is from 1988, and apparently the 1st edition - I am happy to see that there is now a 4th edition: Mrs. Wassermann struck a nerve back then, and her book is truly timeless.
Note: My parents both speak decent English, albeit with an accent, but there is not the language barrier that other overseas grandparents might have with their grandchildren.
An outstanding, readable book for grandparents, near or far........1997-07-11
This book is a wonderful guide to creating good relationships with grandchildren, even if they live in the same city with you! Mrs. Wassermann's ideas are creative, simply expressed, and easy to implement. They are not expensive or elaborate, and anyone can be successful at them. I have used many of her ideas with my own grandchildren and have given this book to many friends. It makes a great gift for new grandparents, too

Simple and Inspiring.......2001-04-22
I read an article about this book in the Dallas Morning News and bought a copy. I recommend it highly! The ideas and tips offer something for everyone. I loved thinking of myself as a VIP after I read the chapter "Why Grandparents Are VIPs", and the chapter on the Life Lessons of Grandparenthood is very inspiring. I don't live in the same city as my grandchildren, but this book is helping me maintain a close relationship with them. Every grandparent should have a copy of this gem.
It's All You Need.......2000-05-25
As a grandparent with too many things already to keep on top of, what a refreshing find is "How To Build the Grandma Connection". I looked at other grandparenting books and they just seemed too big and overwhelming. This book is a concise guide to the essentials of grandparenting. Everything you need is here. And, if you want more information, the author points you to many more quality resources at the end of the book. Start with this book and you just can't go wrong!
How to Build the Grandma Connection.......2000-05-24
As an enthusiastic grandma and co-author of another new book for grandparents, "Grandloving: Making Memories with Your Grandchildren" I'm delighted to recommend Susan's book. It's wonderful to see others who are also supporting and encouraging the grandparent/grandchild relationship with super ideas!

Book Description
The Grandparent Solution is a groundbreaking book that gives you the tools you need to build a “family team”¾the optimum family arrangement that offers your children loving support from their grandparents and gives you (busy and stressed-out parents) the practical and emotional support to do the best job possible. Based on more than thirty years of medical research, the book reveals how to overcome common barriers to creating your family team and offers specific guidelines and techniques to deal effectively with the many challenges you will face along the way. Dr. Kornhaber also stresses the importance of personal attitudes and values, of drawing the line between love and intrusiveness, and devotes special attention to help you find the appropriate degree of involvement for grandparents in helping you raise your child.

A must for every doting grandparent who cares!.......2000-06-15
My wife and I had oftened talked about how much we love our grandchildren and were concerned about some of their problems...Little and some larger ones....At least we thought them to be...but really did'nt want to interfere.....so looking for a guide line we came upon "How to Grandparent" and were so happy we did.....The Author, A World Renown Psychologst has hit the nail on the head by answering all our quiries......We are long distance Grandparents and were amazed to find an interesting chapter on this and almost any other subject we wanted....It took our fears away and led up down the path of the correct ways to handle any problems....We have 4 Grandchildren...one is just 1 in a few months and the older will be 18 in June.......The book covered the entire spectrum from 'goos' to 'pimples'......It is engrosssing with it's tales of other Grandparents.....a fun book to read together......It showed us the Grandmothers and Grandfathers really do have a second chance! We loved it!
