GREAT babyshower gift........2007-06-27
Newborns and 4 year olds all love these books. I give them to all of my friends as a baby shower gift.
We
<3 Karen Katz.......2007-05-16
These are, hands down, our daughter's favorite books. She enjoys them over and over. The illustrations are bright and cute -- highly recommend these books -- especially the lift the flap -- she LOVES them.
Baby's Box of Fun.......2007-05-13
I purchased this book set for my grandson when he was 12 months old. Listening to books is the only time he actually sits still. His favorite book was Toes, Ears, & Nose although he likes all the books because they are interactive. The only problem with the books is if he is left unsupervised or even when holding him, he rips off the flaps in the books. We have had to glue them back on numerous times. I would highly recommend these books but you must be careful with babies that are aggressively interactive with the books.
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!.......2007-03-28
This item was received as a gift and my 2 yr old loves her lift the flaps books. Her favorite out of this collection is "Where is Mommy". I have also purchased them for my friends children and they love them.
Never received mine, bought from 'oktrbks'.......2007-01-05
I bought this from 'oktrbks' and never received.
Contacted the seller and was asked if I want another copy so I said 'yes'
I have not received this yet. I was waiting for this because I believed the seller will send me an another copy. But now It's been more than 90 days so I can not even get my money back.
Not a big money but doesn't feel good at all about the seller's feedback.
Will see if the seller will contact me about this item or not.
I sent an memo to seller today again.
Book Description
A perennial bestseller, now revised and updated for a new generation of fathers, this readable, inspiring guide to the world of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is an indispensable treasury of advice, ideas, and suggestions.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-10
This book has helped me understand babies and become more of a father figure. I recomend this to anyone who is to soon become a father.
Must read for expecting dads.......2006-11-05
This book targets guys and their way of thinking really well as it gets to the point and includes a lot of practical pointers for everything from pregnancy to all the changes that occur after the baby is born. My husband has volunteered information he has learned from this book and is reading it of his own volition.
Informative and helpful for first time dads.......2006-05-08
My partner is a savvy, well informed kind of guy. I had some fear that he would think this book was lame or at least unhelpful when I gave it to him when we were a couple months pregnant. He read the book and sang its praises for the practical ideas and advice it gave for dads to help mom in pregnancy and things to do with the baby when he/she arrives. It's not just pregnancy or baby focused, but includes ideas and activities for dad throughout baby and childhood.
accessible guide to responsible fatherhood.......2004-11-21
The author is a father of two sons and a child-center volunteer, but this book is not just one random guy's ruminations on how to be a better father. The author is also an experienced book editor, and he uses those skills to blend the experiences of nearly 50 other fathers of various backgrounds as he compiles this almanac of observations and seasoned advice.
The style is matter-of-fact yet sympathetic; pragmatic, down-to-earth, and engaging. The content is fair and balanced, offering varying points of view on many details of child-rearing, and does not preach. And while fairly nuanced in this way, on the other hand, it's not wishy-washy and "anything goes" about things -- it's also crisply authoritative in areas where there is just one no-nonsense way to go. E.g., the dangers of older cribs and the maximum recommended gaps between slats, or other safety issues not really open to much experimentation.
Overall though, the book is refreshingly descriptive rather than prescriptive. It's a nice mix of specific, often creative suggestions along with a general philosophy of caring, healthy, and personally appropriate/satisfying fatherhood.
The Almanac will make an excellent gift for fathers of newborns or young children -- up to approximately kindergarten, I'd say, although some of the material is appropriate for even slightly older children too.
Note: although even the more recent edition feels slightly dated simply because the pictures are old, the material itself is all still relevant as far as I could tell.
ONLY THE BEST ON THE MARKET.......2000-08-27
I raised my daughter by this book, and then gave it away to a young father who has raised his son on it. I am an Infant/Toddler teacher and am familiar with very very many many books for parents ... and as far as I am concerned this is only the best book of its kind on the market for fathers.

I expected better.......2007-03-19
It's allright. I've had trouble getting into it - I've found I get better ideas and a better workout from pregnancy fitness videos. Aesthetically speaking, the black & white photos on the the inside are not inspiring.
Overall: not impressed.

A companion to the popular One Yellow Lion and Fuzzy Yellow Ducklings, Matthew Van Fleet's Spotted Yellow Frogs is an engaging fold-out book for babies and preschoolers. Each spread introduces a new pattern, 3-D shape, and color. For example, one set of pages has the words "Striped Orange" on the left, and on the right is a striped orange cube entitled "Cube." Fold out the cube, and voilà! A pride of tumbling, striped-orange tigers appears. Young children will love the peek-a-boo approach of the book, but parents and teachers should let kids know that the patterns shown in the book are not necessarily the only patterns one might find in the animal kingdom. For example, beetles are not always "zigzag red" and butterflies aren't always "swirly purple." The book closes with a 36-inch-long, fold-out page featuring all seven shapes. Readers are asked to call out the names of the shapes, colors, and patterns, and to guess which animals hide behind each. The flip side shows a jumble of all the animals, so kids can pick out which animals are matched with the "wrong" pattern. Spotted Yellow Frogs is an excellent learning tool, and a book that children will want to read again and again. (Baby to preschool) --Aimee Damman
Book Description
Once again this best-selling author-illustrator delights toddlers with an irresistible lift-and-peek format that turns learning into pure fun. Each spread features a colorful geometric shape sporting a distinctive pattern. With the flip of a gatefold, the patterned shape becomes a merry troupe of similarly patterned animals engaged in giggle-producing antics. Peek under a striped orange cube and discover a striped orange tiger daddy overwhelmed by playful cubs. A swirly purple wedge reveals a bevy of butterflies, swirly purple wings aflutter as they vie for a sip of nectar. And while toddlers explore the eye-pleasing visuals, they'll take an important first step toward reading as they begin to associate pictures with words. Spotted Yellow Frogs introduces a new animal, pattern, shape, and color on each of its eight fold-out spreads. Two bonus spreads containing eight more lift-and-peek opportunities unfold to over three feet long and provide hands-on guessing game fun and a spot-the-errors challenge. Matthew Van Fleet lives in Chappaqua, New York.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for kids and grandmas!.......2007-01-10
This book is not only educational for children but an entrancingly visual experience for anyone. My just-turned two-year old granddaughter loved it and had no trouble opening the shapes. Definitely another Van Fleet classic!
Van Fleet can't be beat!.......2006-02-04
All of this author's books are great fun. Check out "Tails" and "Fuzzy Yellow Ducklings"-- my favorites.
The illustrations are warm, funny, friendly, and interesting. What a great way to introduce help your kids learn to love and treasure books! :)
a 2 year olds favorite.......2003-10-09
My son calls it the sticky tongue book. I like to call it a wonderfully illustrated and educational book for young children. 3d shapes are shown in different colors and patterns and then open up to show a scene of different creatures underneath. A red zig zag ball turns to a family of red zig zag beetles tickling each other and playing, one is eating and one is sleeping. My 2 year old loves the humor in the pictures. He asks to read this book every day.
Perfect for squirmy babies!.......2003-09-06
We got this book with a bunch of other hand-me-downs, and now I'm planning on getting the others from this author. My daughter is almost a year, and she gets squirmy every time we try to read any book but this one. With this book, she sits still, and looks so intently at the pages, laughing as we open each flap. Every time I say "the end", she signs "more". She could sit and read it over and over. While the shapes are more advanced than a baby will understand, I highly recommend this book for little ones, as well as preschoolers!
My 3 year-olds new favorite.......2003-08-31
It's a good thing I love this book, because I've had to read it every day for the past two weeks and there is no end in sight to my son's enthusiasm. Not only is it a good introduction to complex shapes, but the illustrations are phenomenal. The animals are drawn with complex emotions on their faces that are fun to discuss with my child. From bored to exhausted to annoyed to surprised to delighted to perplexed and on and on, with small details in the background that my son loves to look for over and over. This one will be a gift to other children from now on.

A Must-Have for Interactive Reading.......2007-09-20
These books are a must-have for all babies! The artwork is adorably colorful, and the interactivity of the flaps makes reading more fun; it gives baby something to do while you read.
Great books.......2007-05-25
Our daughter fell in love with these books around 6 or 7 monhts and still gets excited and selects them over others at 14 months. She has learned so much through them too! We have many of Katz board books with the flaps, and are so happy the author is so prolific. Our daughter likes them all, but the 4 here are her favorites (and "What Does Baby Say?"). Keep them coming!
Great for the family.......2007-05-21
These books are a great way for everyone in the family to feel appreciated and loved. They make the reader (grandmother for example) feel even more special. I love them.
They're also sturdy enough for my 9 month old to play with and chew on. These aren't his favorite books (that's Violet's House) but they're still great.
And I love that it's cheaper to buy the set than it is to buy the books individually! :) I love book sets.
karen katz books.......2007-03-21
My daughter is 14 months old and she LOVES these flap books. She has many books, but these are her absolute favorite. We have several sets in fact. I carry them with us in the diaper bag...there are some in the car...at Grandma's house....she never gets bored with them. We read them several times a day!!!

Customer Reviews:
Wasn't Helpful.......2007-09-03
Got this for my hubby for Christmas last year. He opened it a few times. Was not impressed with the "games" they had in there. Pretty obvious type things, or variations of the same game, or just strange ones. Wish I hadn't spend the $$ on this, as it's just sitting on a shelf.
Perfevt gift for new dads.......2005-08-22
This book was a gift for my friends husband, as they just had their baby. He really does like the book. I thought it was a good idea to buy, as it gives new dads some good ideas what to do with their newborns, other than stare at them :-)
Poorly Laid out but some good exercises.......2004-02-01
Most of the exercises are good and one usually comes to them naturally. It's a good reference to get a base set of things to do with your child. The only problem is it's poorly laid out meaning some of the sets are birth - 3 months with another set being birth to 6 months. Why not have them birth, 3 months, 6 months etc. The pictures are somewhat useless as well in that they show a guy and a child smiling. Diagrams with how the exercises should be performed might be a bit better.
Rookie Dad.......2002-06-16
My husband is going to be a first time Dad this September.
For Father's day I chose this book as a little guide for him to enjoy.I know he is going to be a fantastic Father but wanted to give him some fun games to enjoy with the baby.I love the way the book explains all the exercises incorporating the whole sporting theme. The pictures are also fantastic.I just know my husband is going to gain so much from this book in turn enjoying his time with our child.I am pleased I chose this book for his first.
A must buy.......2002-04-04
If you are looking for a book with tons of fun games and excercises to do with your infant, this is the book. I swear by it. We were trying to help my daughter crawl and I found an excercise/game in the book that had her crawling in days!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great for any age........2006-04-30
This book is filled with fun things to do at any age and for anyone who has some time to spend in the L.A. area. We visit there often and sometimes we are looking for more to do than just the big theme parks. There are so many things that I wouldn't have known about, much less how and where to find them. A treasure for anyone, local or tourist.
Not your typical guide.......2005-03-04
Baby's Day Out in Southern California provides a wide range of age-appropriate excursions. Crammed to the bursting point with places to go, things to see and do, special events, ideas for activities and related reading, this excellent book is one of the most innovative, detailed and practical guides around.
Although the contents are arranged by type of place (i.e., museums, aquariums, farms and ponies, flying), it also offers site maps, making it easy to plan a day around a particular location or a specific interest. Listings include physical and Web addresses, phone numbers, directions, what to see and do, hours, parking, admission and membership information, related locations, nearby places and blank space for your own comments. Additional sections contain events by the month, packing lists and road games.
Its most valuable feature is its ability to look at potential places from a child's perspective. Among the 224 sites listed in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Santa Barbara/Ventura counties are fire stations, school bus yards, museums, libraries, gardens and nature centers, truck stops, farms, theaters and convention centers.
This is one of the best travel reference guides you could acquire if you have young children.
Great resource for any location.......2004-05-04
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and never knew about 90% of the places suggested in this book! In addition to the usual spots (Disneyland, parks, etc), the book suggests creative places like the schoolbus depot and construction sites (from a safe distance, of course!). "Baby's Day Out" really made me look at the world through my babies' eyes, where everything is a new and fascinating experience. For example, when I drive on the highway now, I point out the trucks passing by to my kids and they love watching the different sizes and colors. Before this book, I never would have thought about trucks on the highway as a field trip experience. This book is also very practical, providing all the necessary information, including Thomas Guide map pages, hours, prices, parking, everything! As an added bonus for me, Holt even tells me when they're enough room for my double stroller (with twin 18-month old boys, that is a big plus for me). I live in New Jersey now and bought this book while on vacation in Los Angeles. I wish they would write a book like this for us folks in the east coast.
Southern California tour guide especially geared towards par.......2003-09-30
Finally there is a Southern California tour guide especially geared towards parents of babies and toddlers. Your children learn best through first hand experiences and Baby's Day Out is chock full of great places for the young (and not so young) to experience the things they love like animals, trains, parks, aquariums, tide pools, hands-on museums and more. My 10 year old and 61/2 year old twins still love to visit many of the places listed in JoBea Way's comprehensive guide. They also have a list of many new places for us to visit as well.
The book is broken down into eleven chapters covering major areas of interest for young children: Museums, Our City, Gardens and Nature, The Zoo, Aquariums, Trains and more. There are over 224 separate sites reviewed. Locations covered include the expected Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos as well as many less well known places like the Goodyear Blimp Airfield, Tierra Rejada Farm and Pasadena Unified School Bus Lot.
The book includes many helpful tips for making outings more enjoyable and each review contains a concise description, directions with Thomas Guide page references, and cross references to both similar sites and nearby attractions. Easy to spot icons let parents know if the locations can accommodate single and or double wide strollers (most do), and whether gift shops, snack shops or picnic areas are available so parents can plan accordingly. I love the lists of children's books on topic related to each entry and the special pages with simple graphics of animals or things that go, etc. These pages are designed for young children's use before, during or after their visits. For example, the first picture pages are of cars and trucks children might see on the way to their visit.
The final chapter includes a month-by-month "Things to Look For" section featuring holiday, special events and seasonal changes to watch for geared to Southern California. There are comprehensive listings of Fourth of July displays, Holiday lights, Farmer's Markets and more. These lists alone are a great resource whether you have young children or not.
The number and variety of places listed is truly impressive. Our family has been enjoying working our way through the book and finding many new favorites. I plan to give this book as a shower gift to all my pregnant friends and think the book is a great resource for parents of school age children and teachers also.
A Survival book for the S. Cal. Parent.......2003-07-31
Whether you are from S. Cal or just visiting, this is the book for anyone wanting to have an enjoyable day with their children in Southern California. It is filled with ideas and facts about more than just the usual L.A. attractions. And it is geared toward the parent with young children and what is fun and appropriate for them. After I used it once, I don't go anywhere without this book. I just leave it in the car. You'll never be at a loss for places to go and the best way to see them. It is obvious that Dr. Holt did her research and has been to all of these places firsthand. There are no blind recommendations and her ideas for fun and free adventures really inspired me to get out there and explore with my children. Buy this book and you are on the road to years of hassle free outings with your kids.

Book Description
New mothers and health care practitioners alike will benefit from these postpartum exercise ideas. Photos depicting full-body stretching and strengthening workouts are complemented by helpful advice on tightening abdominal muscles; squeezing in workout time; spicing up routine exercises using an exercise ball; exercising with baby; and improving posture. Female "taboo" topics are boldly addressed, including urinary incontinence and cesarean and episiotomy scar tissue. Included are 18 unique workouts, 40 strengthening exercises, and 17 stretching exercises, many of which can be performed within 24 hours after giving birth. A flow chart helps users keep track of progress, and a glossary assists with medical terminology.
Customer Reviews:
Much different than other exercise books, a must-have.......2002-08-18
This is a gentle, flexible exercise routine that begins with exercise routines suitable 24 hours after birth that start off with 5 minutes of floor exercises (with no balance ball or other equipment at this point) and 5 minutes of walking.
The goal for the first level of exercises is not to lose weight but to enhance the mothers' physical condition and to enhance recovery after childbirth. There are special exercises to help heal c-section incision area and simple things to do to help prevent c-section scar adhesions. Other exercises help episiotomy site healing, separation of diastasis recti (abdominal muscles) due to pregnancy and exercises for recovering from urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence (which has been linked in a study to be caused by episiotomies).
Another important focus of the book is the goal of not having back pain. The book teaches prevention of back and shoulder injury by teaching proper positions for holding baby, breastfeeding, and lifting baby up, such as when lifting out of crib. Using a stroller is discouraged if the woman has carpal tunnel syndrome due to pregnancy as pushing the stroller can further aggravate the pain and the condition. Use of a front pack baby carrier is recommended as a back-healthy way to carry baby and proper usage of it (so it is comfortable and doesn't cause back pain) is outlined by the author. I have witnessed many people wearning their baby carriers in a way that causes back pain, I encourage everyone to read the manufacturers directions and this authors' directions so using this style baby carrier doesn't cause you pain!
The program progresses in stages up to a 5-star difficulty rating, as the woman desires to get into physical shape with increased aerobic activity designed for fat burning, weight loss and increased muscle strength.
The book features cutout one-sided pages that illustrate an entire workout by name, order, and illustration so the mother can carry it with her for reference rather than propping up the book and trying to keep the book open during the workout. Later in the book are the longer, detailed instructions for each exercise.
There are loads of references to studies on everything from why a vaginal birth is easier on a woman's body to why an episiotomy can cause a woman physical problems to why breastfeeding is beneficial. I was surprised to see so many studies cited throughout the text and in side bar quotes.
Other than some stretching exercises, breathing and abdominal exercies, the baby is incorporated into the routine (but it looks to me that this is only possible when the baby can strongly hold up his/her neck), which is great because doing the exercises won't require mother and baby separation. The exercises can be done in short segments multiple times during the day when the busy mother can carve out these small time segments.
Breastfeeding is portrayed in a positive light, including a photo of the author breastfeeding and with tidbits of positive research about breastfeeding's health benefits and personal opinions of the author about enhancing bonding between mother and baby.
An attitude and emphasis on the woman being the expert of her body is throughout. It begins with self-tests for separation of abdominal exercises, Kegel muscle self tests, etc. and urges the woman to listen to her own body. Using the information in this book the woman can design her own workout schedule and assess her own body's strengths, weaknesses and areas that would benefit from exercising. This book does not promote reliance on exercise clubs, gyms, etc. so this is a low-expense workout. The balance ball that is used in later parts of the text costs about $30 and can be used in the home (which is far less money than most exercise shoes cost).
I especially appreciated that this book does not portray pregnancy or childbirth in a negative light. It is not like other books that almost treat pregnancy as a bad thing for making the woman gain weight and other body changes occur that are negative. It does *not* have the attitude that as soon as the baby is born a mission must begin to get in shape and lose fat. There is no negative language about the physical appearance of the body while pregnant or after the baby is born. The book is more focused on feeling good, developing strong core muscles, and being able to live pain-free.
This is not a killer-workout that requires huge amounts of time and energy; it is definitely do-able at all the stages of difficulty, and will definitely help any mother who uses it.
Recommended for young mothers who may feel overwhelmed.......2002-05-06

Therapeutic, as well as fun for everyone!.......2001-11-24
I highly recommend this book! As a middle-aged grandma, I was initially interested in this book for myself, as I will soon have an abdominal hysterectomy, and will be needing some gentle, yet effective post-op abdominal exercises. I am also an RN/certified fitness trainer, so I have used Caroline Creager's books in the past. I am finding this book to be an excellent source for my clients, especially new moms, and people like myself, needing strengthening after surgery. The section on diaphragmatic breathing is essential for the post-op period. Although this is a postpartum program, most exercises could apply to anyone, as they emphasize strengthening the core, which is fundamental in beginning an exercise program. The exercises and stretches using the Swiss ball would benefit anyone, young and old, as they are safe, functional, and help to improve posture and balance.
But first and foremost, this book is a must for the new mother, full of fun, energy-efficient workouts, demonstrated by Caroline and her baby. There is emphasis on posture, as well as the proper body mechanics in lifting and carrying baby to support your back and prevent injury. The exercises are beneficial to baby as well, aiding sleep, improving strength, balance and socialization. What a great way to interact and bond with your baby! This would be a unique and much appreciated gift for mom and baby.
A great program.......2001-11-21
Finally an excercise program that is written by a mom who understands, that working out is not a priority. Caroline fully understands the time limitation of moms. This has been a great program to get me going again, I feel good about myself. I kept thinking I would start working out, tomorrow, next week, next month etc., but this program makes working out attainable by working it into my day. By starting out with just 10 minutes a day I felt like I was accomplising something, now I do it twice a day and feel like I can add more time. THANK YOU - this is the best and strongest I've felt in a long time!

Customer Reviews:
Even better than I expected!.......2007-07-23
I appreciated all of the reviews below. I purchased this book and found it to be EXACTLY what I wanted.
Pros
-Compact
-Free format pages
-Simple to use. A few words completes the page to explain the event.
-I've found that I've written a couple of wordy stories I didn't expect to write and this book even had the for that space!
-I LOVE the color design and colors.
Cons
-I simply find it odd that all the baby name and birth info is in the back.
-A couple of the pages in the back could be better formatted, in my opinion. Examples - sleeping should include associated feedings and songs should include space to describe how the baby participated in the song.
I plan to order the same book for my next child. (It would be nice if another cover design or color scheme of the cover was available to more easily differentiate the books for the kids.)
Great shower gift!.......2007-07-22
Now pregnant with my second, I realize that time constraints of recording all of those precious and funny moments in babyhood. With my first, I resorted to scribbling on scraps of paper and filing them away in a photo box. Then I found this book, and gave it to a friend (although I secretly wanted to keep it for myself!)...I have since bought over 5 copies for shower gifts (and have ordered one for baby #2!). This book always gets attention at showers too!
Easy!.......2006-03-09
I love this book because it's quick and easy for me to fill in. I have been filling it in monthly for my 20 month old son and am ordering another copy for my new baby....due now!
A STRESS-FREE way to record all of the IMPORTANT details!!.......2005-10-13
BRILLIANT! Many other baby books left me with the thought, "How in the world will I ever find time to fill in all of these blanks?!?!" This book is perfect! You just write in it when you have time or when something important or funny happens. It takes VERY LITTLE TIME to fill out an entire page, and each page lends itself to recording many notes so you won't forget things later. It is a guilt-free, stress-free, FUN way to record a ton of memories and I know my son, now 10 months, will appreciate all of the details.
What I like:
- Flexibility: You can record a page for any month from 1-24 months. Including quarter, half and three quarters of months.
- Plenty of pages.
- The places on each page for likes and dislikes (which change constantly).
- There is a place for height and weight on each page (which I don't always fill in, but it's nice that it's there).
In the back of the book:
- You can draw in and put the date of teeth as they come in. Too cute!!
- There is a place for recording baby's reaction to first foods and songs.
- There are pages to record the big important hospital info as well as "names we thought of for you" and "what we called you before you were born"
- There is a place to date when baby startstalking, clapping, walking, etc. and a place to record and date first words.
- I could fill this any for two kids at once, because it's so quick.
- It's fun to read and to have family read. It's fun to see how the baby has changed.
- The artwork is cool.
- It's thin and hardback, so it's easy to travel with.
- It skips the things I didn't want to have to fill out in the other books and focuses on your baby's development.
Bummers:
- It only goes to 24 months.
- I wish there were more space for foods.
- Sometimes I can't fit everything on one page...when this happens, I just use 2 for the same age. :)
I also use this to make notes of trips that we have taken or the first time our son was babysat. I plan to supplement this with a simple photo album or a scrapbook if I have time some other year.
You won't regret this buy!
