Sufferer of postpartum Anxiety.......2007-04-03
I can honestly say that I have purchased about 15-20 books regarding PPD in the last year and this book has been the most informative, encouraging and beneficial to me, along with being easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from PPD, or a spouse/friend of someone suffering from this. When you are a sufferer, you find yourself agonizing over why you are feeling the way you do. Finally, someone has written a book that answers all the questions you are asking. This book will help you get through your day, this book will help you realize that this dark cloud will not stay forever, this book will help you get better.
Very practical to the point information that doesn't create anxiety.......2007-01-16
Being a PPD survivor, I feel that out of all the books I read, this one was the best. It provided stories I could relate to, factual information about postpartum mood disorders, questions about medication and separate sections for family and healthcare providers.
It is presented in such a way, so that if one is feeling vulnerable it won't create added anxiety.
I still reference this book for education purposes.

very helpful and easy read.......2006-07-16
so many folks fall into depression during or shortly following pregnancy. changes in the body, hormone levels, neurotransmitters, SLEEP DEPRIVATION, changes in perceptions of who we are, what is expected of us, finances, support from family and friends, our bodily image, realization of the seriousness of the new responsibility ... it's natural to feel this depression, for many folks, for the first time in their lives. this book takes folks for where they're at, provides numerous treatments / techniques / exercises that many people have found helpful in pulling themselves out from post-partum depression. this was a fairly light read, welcomed, and motivating! good to very good content. many people have reported to me that this book has been helpful to them. i think that it is a very good book and is worth the price. some folks, especially those who've had episodes of depression or family histories of perinatal depression might consider reading the book as a way of reducing the likelihood of onset. it offers some helpful information for family and friends.
A good start.......2006-07-12
A great unbiased view of prenatal and postpartum depression. Well written as a good start for anyone looking for information on this subject.

Helpful.......2007-01-12
Bought for my daughter who is experiencing the awful pain of infertility and failed IVF. She read it twice and I am reading it now to catch up. The authors have been through the same, which was important to my daughter. They speak with love, compassion, professionalism and authority on the subject.
Unsung Lullabies: Understanding and Coping with Infertility.......2006-08-31
I can't say enough good things about this book. For several years,I have had problems mourning and moving past my infertility. This book helped me finally move on from the hurt and disappointment because it helped me realize that lots of other people feel the same pain and anger when they struggle with infertility. It made me realize that I am NORMAL and infertility is a devastating thing that should not be taken lightly. I feel so much better having read this book.
A must have. . ........2005-09-02
Out of all the fertility "help" books, this was our favorite. Not only was it informative but it helped us to feel 'normal' amidst a trying process. In fact we loved this book so much that we bought one for each of our parents. It's another tool to help educate them about the trauma we've experienced for over three years.
This is a simply wonderful book!.......2005-05-24
What can I say, having lived and struggled and finally come to terms with infertility; this book is flat out wonderful. I only wish it had been available 15 years ago! With incredible sensitivity, insight, and compassion Diamond/Diamond and Jaffe have created a reference work for both the lay public and professionals whose life work or lives cope and live with reproductive problems and their consequences. Unsung Lullabies is also a moving and illuminating "read" for those of us who are blessed with children, be they of our own making or adopted; fostered or cared for. Get it, read it, and grow; for it will open your eyes to parenting on a whole new level. Our world needs more inspiration like this. Bravo to the Diamonds and Jaffe for a terrific first book.
Book Description
Postpartum depression is the most common complication women experience after childbirth — nearly 700,000 new moms suffer from it each year. Yet this serious mood disorder, characterized by sadness, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness and guilt, insomnia, and thoughts of harming the baby or oneself, continues to be widely misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed. Venis and McCloskey cover topics including:
• the nature of PPD and how it differs from other perinatal mood disorders
• how to recognize and cope with the symptoms
• how to obtain an accurate diagnosis
• key risk factors and how to minimize them
• medications and therapies
• getting the support you need from your partner, family, and friends
• how PPD can affect your relationship with your partner and your baby
• nurturing yourself through recovery

Life-saving warning signs and advice.......2007-06-15
This book truly demystifies postpartum depression. The authors describe the warning signs and provide coping mechanisms to deal with PPD. Thanks to Joyce Venis, PPD is less of a stigma and is becoming more understood. A must read for pregnant women and for new mothers!
Not Only Women Experience The Effects Of PPD!!!.......2007-02-22
Men, this book is a must read for you as well. This will give you the insight to a better understanding of what it is that our "Moms" are going through. Moms aren't the only ones who suffer, we do to. Through Joyce's extremely hard work and personal experience, this book helps us better understand an illness, that many do not know exists. No one knows better than me the personal sacrifice, pain, tears and most of all, care that Joyce has dedicated to Moms out there through phone calls, support groups and her practice. It makes me VERY proud that she has finally put her knowledge/experience into words for everyone to read. She has spent a lifetime helping Moms everywhere and making this book happen. It's long over due. Like I said, no one knows better than me. Not only am I a PPD survivor, I am her son!!!!!
A must read for moms and family members affected by PPD.......2007-02-20
For more than 20 years, Joyce Venis has been known nationally for her work with families affected by postpartum depression. This book shares her vast knowledge and expertise with the world and is a must read for anyone who has been affected by PPD--moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, health care providers etc. With a book that brings this common condition out of the shadows, it is hoped that unrecognized PPD will be a thing of the past and the horrific tragedies that have left us asking 'why?' will be no more.
Inspired.......2007-02-19
I haven't even read this book, yet I know it's going to be fantastic. As a first time mom who thought having PPD was the end of the world, Joyce showed me that isn't true. Now, I can say, I have PPD, PPD doesn't have me. She's always there when she's needed. She goes above and beyond for her patients. Not only is she an expert in her field, she's a good friend to alot of moms. Including this one. Emma and I love her.
Amazing Help for All Mothers.......2007-02-17
Joyce Venis is truly the authority on postpartum depression. From her clinical and personal experience, she has touched the lives of so many women and helped them through such a trying time in their lives. Through this book, she is able to spread her wisdom and strength to a much broader audience, hopefully helping all mothers out there to be the very best they can possibly be. As a PPD survivor myself, I truly know how helpful Joyce's advice and stories can be. Reading her book will make all sufering mothers feel more normal, know they are not alone, and help them begin on the path to healing. Well Done, Joyce!
Book Description
One in four babies born in the United States and Europe comes into the world via Cesarean section. Yet this procedure has been described by critics as an unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical intervention. Consequently, expectant mothers often fear this option, and women who have had C-sections can feel a sense of failure.
In Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby's Birth, Drs. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa emphasize the joy of delivering a healthy baby, however that is best achieved. They explain why Cesarean births are sometimes preferable to vaginal delivery for both mother and baby, and they help women understand the issues behind the decision to perform the procedure. From anesthesia, surgery, and recovery through at-home care of mother and child, the authors offer reassurance and practical information for all mothers and mothers-to-be. They also discuss the latest findings on postpartum depression and planning for future births, including the possibility of vaginal birth after a Cesarean section.
For every woman who has a planned -- or unplanned -- Cesarean section, this book provides the information they need to alleviate their fears and come to value this delivery option.
"Because up to a quarter of all births are Cesarean births, prenatal preparation should include information about Cesarean sections for every woman. And that is why we have written this guide.... We believe strongly that it is time to speak out and say that Cesarean section is a normal birth method and that women who have a Cesarean section should not be made to feel that they have failed.... We hope you find the information in this book useful and helpful in thinking about C-section, whether you have already had a Cesarean and want to understand the experience better, you wish to plan for another C-section birth, or you are expecting a baby and want to be informed about all the possibilities ahead, including this other normal way of bringing a baby into the world." -- from the Introduction
Customer Reviews:
I am a "caesar" baby.......2007-06-21
I just sent a copy of this book to my best friend who will have her first baby soon. My mother had a cesarean section to birth me because after she'd been in labor for about 24 hours, my heartbeat seemed to disappear. Like some of the examples in this book, mine was an emergency c-section and my mother had no moral choice. When I was born, it was found that the cord was around my neck and I was strangling. I can thank the availability of a cesarean for my life and for not being developmentally challenged. I make sure all my friends have the opportunity to be prepared if things go awry during their pregnancy or labor.
The blind leading the blind.......2007-06-13
Jan, the example mother, did fail at childbirth. She should be sad about this for awhile, but then let it go because it wasn't entirely her fault: the medical establishment, which she mistakenly trusted, failed her. They are the ones who should feel bad for causing this family unnecessary trauma. The first mistake was the pitocin. It causes increased pain and does not always cause labour to progress. If Jan had the information to know to refuse the pitocin, she would have had the natural birth she wanted. The second mistake was using a fetal monitor - one of the main reasons for unnecessary c-sections. Jan should have been sent home when her labor failed to progress; she should not have been given drugs. This classic example of an unnecessary c-section was a failing of the medical establishment but the book portrays it falsely as no-one's fault -- which pretty much sums up the entire tone of the book. It's progaganda for a system that wants women to be ignorant and meek, accepting unquestioningly the unhealthy birth protocols perpetuated in hospitals by clueless physicians and nurses who think - mistakenly - that they are doing the right thing. Jan's story is a lesson in how misguided both hospital staff and mothers are today. One can only hope the authors of this book will someday see the error of their ways and publish a retraction of this misinformation. Unfortunately, it probably won't be before many more women have unnecessary c-sections.
Authors' reply.......2007-05-17
We are happy to agree with Rfolger. Cesareans should be for medical indications and that is exactly what we say in the book. Our figures are also close to his/hers. However there are also some women who having considered the options request the operation without major medical indications - that is a matter for them and their doctors, like everything else in a woman's decisions about her reproductive functions. Our aim is to provide sensible accurate information to women who have already had a Csection or face the prospect of having one. Not every woman can safely have a vaginal birth and no woman should end up feeling bad about her birth method because she had a Csection.Caroline de Costa
A Bad Myth being Perpetuated..........2007-05-07
Although a c-section maybe necessary for emergencies, most aren't. Only 10-20% of births should be via c-section, and only when medically necessary. C-sections are not a normal birth method, only a vaginal birth is. If you want to read a more informative look at c-sections and the dangers, read "Born in the USA" by Marsden Wagner, also an MD.
good information for new mothers.......2006-08-13
Waiting for my second child after 8 years, now an older Mom. First I found these authors book on older parenting Mid Life New Life - full of good tips. Having a Csection last time means I'll have another again this time after so long. This book helps put it in persepective - the whole aim is a healthy baby. Silvia S.

Customer Reviews:
Courageous author acknowledges soul communication.......2000-10-03
As I opened this book, I wondered whether I would be disappointed by yet another author who pushes aside the possibility of pre-birth communication. I have read books on the dreams of pregnancy that speak of symbols, wish fulfillment, and the mind's tendency to sift through possible outcomes. It takes courage to assert that some dreams may be genuine communications from the soul of the unborn child. Raina M. Paris has that courage. This is a wonderfully satisfying book, written with the touch of a poet and full of common sense. There are rich chapters devoted to both the mother's and father's experiences, exercises to increase dream awareness, and an insightful glossary of common dream symbols as they pertain to pregnancy. One of the most delightful aspects of Paris's style is the way she accepts premonitory dreams as entirely natural events, "mysteriously ordinary, like life." This is the approach I prefer in dealing with all channels of pre-birth communication.
Soul food in a material world.......2000-09-29
As pregnant women and mothers, we are force fed consumerism as we give birth to the newest generation of the American consumer--we must stop and tune into our souls, our children's future and our own hearts. Ms. Paris' book provides this much needed stop sign in a busy world. Motherhood needs to be acknowledged for the spiritual transformation that it is, and not as the ultimate ride down the birth canal into a material world. Ms. Paris' book offers insights and fresh perspective into the dream world that we cross into when we become mothers. It is soul food in a material world. Forego the "What booties to buy" book and buy this book instead. It will change your dreams, your future and your child's entry into its conscious dream--LIFE. Also a wonderful chapter on men and fathers to be--who are equally as important at every stage of a child's life.
Dreams of Parenthood.......2000-05-08
This is a warm and wise book, lovingly written, on the myriad and wonderful ways that soul moves in the lives of those chosen to give birth. It offers sure and steady counsel for the unfolding of an inner process which might otherwise seem bewildering and overwhelming. Ms.Paris writes straight from the heart, with a sure knowledge of her subject. A must for all prospective mothers-to-be, and for their mates as well.
Turning Nightmares Into Sweet Dreams..........2000-04-08
What I first noticed about this book was the intriguing title...intriguing to me as a father of two young ones. My original expectations when I opened it did not live up to the very reality of the book itself. I guess I'm cynical because so many books dealing in the arena of psychology, and especially dream analysis, seem to be either arcane and unreadable for the layman like me, or annoyingly trendy and superficial psychobabble. THIS BOOK HAS NONE OF THOSE SHORTCOMINGS!
What Ms. Paris has written here is a thoughtful, sensitive, profoundly insightful book about the confounding and sublime experience presented by a woman's inner consciousness as new life grows, and she prepares to meet the new physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of birth and parenthood.
I wish my wife and I could have read it during both of her pregnancies. We each tackled sometimes funny, sometimes scary dreams we could make no sense of in terms of the impending events. It was a wild ride, often surreal and hilarious, occasionally unsettling. We didn't have a clue.
Had I read this, I think I could have been a more effective support to my partner in some of those times. Paris' intelligent presentation and analysis give meaning and context to the dreams themselves; and her gentle, authoritative suggestions of ways to prepare for and to respond to the dreams could be a blessing for any parent-to-be.
We've loved reading it, even some years after the fact of those births. With humor and insight, she's given us new and worthwhile understanding of our own path to getting here as parents. In clear, well-written, accesible language, it makes the journey to joy even more of a celebration. We're sending it to all our new or about-to-be-parent friends.
Every parent-to-be should buy this insightful/joyful book........2000-04-04
Ms. Paris offers tremendous depth and insight into to the miraculous world of pregnancy by delving into the dreamworld of parents and their yet-unborn children. The book is a joy to read, and its message comes through with grace and reverence for the beauty of Life. I wish this book had been available when I was pregnant with my son (who is now thirteen) because I would have been able to decipher some of the nightmares I had just before he was born. I wouldn't have been so scared of motherhood. I always joke to my friends how I wished God would have made a how-to manual that comes out with the baby . The Mother-To-Be Dream Book is the closest thing to understanding the unbreakable psychic bond between parents and their children and bringing into the light the unconscious in family dynamics. I recommend this book to everyone, even if you're not pregnant. It is a reminder of the oneness of all of Life, of how inter-connected we are ...And to those of you who so generously shared your most intimate dreams with Ms. Paris, thank you for your candor. This book is truly a gift to the world. Like a meditation. I felt safe and nurtured by the last page.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough and Compassionate.......2001-09-06
If you only buy one book about infertility, buy this one. It offers in-depth, solid information about male and female infertility problems, testing, hormone levels and treatments.
But what really separates this book from the others is that it includes a great deal of information on how to decide which treatments are right for you, as well as when (if) you should end treatment. They don't give any pat answers, but they do equip you with the decision making skills you need to reach a point of resolution.
I loved this book!
the best resource I've found.......2001-06-02
I was grateful to find this new book to address many questions and concerns I had. The content is thorough, the tone is very compassionate, and the suggestions are respectful of diverse values. There are lots of quotes from real people that bring a nice personal touch to a sometimes very clinical subject. I get a lot of comfort from just re-reading parts of the book that reassure me that others before me have taken and survived this journey. I don't know of any other book like it.
Comprehensive.......2000-07-10
This book is the most detailed and clear encyclopedia on fertility issues that we've come across. Very thorough and reliable. Very up to date
RESOLVE does it again!.......2000-04-06
RESOLVE has been helping those in the infertility for years and continues to do so with this amazing book. The author takes you through the biological side of conceiving and also the different causes of infertility. What I especially liked about it is how easy it is to understand as it guides you through the entire process from medical, to diagnosis and through treatment, pregnancy and beyond.
It provides sound advice for infertility coverage and choosing a good doctor. It offers alternatives to conventional fertility treatment, as well as adoption, and the use of donors and/or surrogates. It also takes you through resolving issues to help those who choose to live life without children or to move on to adoption. Throughout, if gives the reader emotional support, which I feel is the hardest obstacle to overcome. As a fertility patient myself, and director of community of ChildofMyDreams.com, I highly recommend it.

The Classic on Pregnancy.......2004-07-07
My wife and I have used the new edition and the last one as a definitive guide to pregnancy. The experts writing this book have provided the info in a clear and understanding way. It is our bible for our pregnancies.
The Classic on Pregnancy.......1998-04-11
This is a classic book now in it's fourth edition. I have found it reassuring, informative, simple to understand without any strict point of view. It seems to be basic reading for pregnant couples.
Solid unbiased info.......1998-02-21
For me, trying to get pregnant, I found this book to have a great overview of lots of topics, nicely balancing between simple explanations & technical talk, starting with info on how to get in shape before pregnancy & how to choose a dr. However, don't be misled by the copy on the back cover that says 'thoroughly revised to incorporate all the latest medical advances...' please note that though this book is available in new book stores, it was in fact published in 1992. This is sometimes noticable in the text, like 'the baby is taken to the nursery, where most of its needs will be met for the next few days.' What insurance plan was that? Keep that in mind if you're really researchin the latest info. Overall? good info & not nearly as depressing as some books that really point out all the problems you could have.

A good book if that is what you are looking for.......2002-07-11
This book is excellently written, authoritative and easily read, and will appeal both to the practitioner as well as expectant mothers and their families. The footnotes and bibliography are well done. If you are unaware of the extent of PPD, then it will open your eyes. It explains exactly what it is all about. Any technical jargon is footnoted at the bottom of the page with clear definitions. What bothered me is that it goes on and on with saddening case stories of infanticide, some of which seem only questionally related to a PPD background. After the first 100 pages, I felt that I was reading a compendium of child killings, rather than how a mother and her family should handle her depression. An important topic as it is, especially for practioners and husbands to know that they should look after the new mother with devotion and TLC, it goes a little too far with all the bizarre tales. Although it includes a list of resources to turn to, the book as a whole is more of an eye opener than a guide. Also, for a 190 page book, it's a little pricy.
A MUST READ FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES!.......2001-01-05
I wish I would have read this book DURING my pregnancy! To understand the NATURAL hormone and emotional changes that occured after delivery of my child could have saved me so much heart ache! Dr. Huysman describes her own experience with Postpartum Depression, who is at risk, the warning signs, true stories of loving mothers who have suffered this illness plus treatment options. READ THIS BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR BABY!
Professional Read vs. Mother's Book.......1999-04-30
As a professional clinician, I found this book to be clearly very informative on the signs and symptoms of PPD/PPPD. As a mother potentially suffering from PPD, I found this reading quite disturbing as far as the potential extent that PPD can be manifested in some individuals. The author seems to reach conclusions about mothers who have killed their children and covered up the murders that becomes scary. If these seemingly sane mothers could kill their babies because of a disease that is so common, then why aren't stronger measures being taken to make sure that mothers in this country are more supported by families and the medical profession. The author makes this point quite clear and as a professional this book will change some of my clinical assumptions about new mothers. However, as a new mother, I would consider this a loud wake-up call. I would recommend this book highly to professionals who deal with pregnant and/or postpartum women and their spouses, especially those who might be in a position to suggest treatment plans or refer anyone exhibiting symptoms. As a PPD mother, I wish my OB/GYN or pediatrician had have read A Mother's Tears, but I was not prepared to consider suicide or murder as symptoms of PPPD. The suggested books and videos and organizations are worth the price of the book for a referral source.
I recommend for public and health science libraries........1999-02-06
Postpartum depression (PPD)is a common illness, yet it is often overlooked and undertreated. This book is a challenge to physicians to consider PPD a significant disorder and an alert to new mothers and their families to recognize and seek professional help for PPD when it occurs. Huysman, a clinical psychologist specializing in mood disorders, provides a basic look at PPD:its causes, risk factors, symptoms, and therapeutic interventions. She extends the current thinking to suggest the existence of Progressive Postpartum Depression(PPPD), which affects mothers months or even years after childbirth and can be debilitating and dangerous. The book offers case histories of women who have overcome PPD and PPPD and of others who tragically harmed their children or themselves because their illness was never diagnosed. An important chapter by a clinical social worker with specific suggestions for getting help is also included; recommended for public and health sciences libraries.Linda M.G. Katz, Allegheny Univ. of the Health Sciences, Philadelphia.
