Oderint Dum Metuant.......2007-09-18

It means "let them hate so long as they fear". It is a needlepoint pillow in one of the main character's mother's living room. This book is a scream. Very, very funny, very prescient, better than "Smoking". the antagonists (there are no protagonists) are kind of insane, and just believable enough. The plot is genius: the day comes when everybody starts to retire at once. The economy groans while younger people turn out in violent demonstrations against the boomers. Various wacko solutions are offered - but are they really wacko? Look for details in 10 years. As usual Buckley - our own Thomas Swift - is just a half step ahead of the headlines. And like the man said, "all great ideas begin as a joke". Run get it.

Would rather be "Smoking".......2007-09-07

"Thank You for Smoking" was the first book of Buckley's that I read. While it wasn't a 5-star - it was laugh out loud funny in parts and right on the money in others. (The part with the nicotine patches had me in tears.) But this one - while constructed on a VERY novel and potentially funny way to deal with the Social Security crisis was nowhere near the caliber of TYFS. (Speaking of which - some of the acronyms he made up for the ridiculous groups and agencies were pretty good but after a while....zzzzzz.)

Plus - every single character turned out to be a dud - not one of them was either pure satirical evil or Stepford Wife angelic - just a rather dull dishwater grey. I will buy Buckley's next book - but probably not with the same sense of glee that I bought this one.

Watch out Baby Boomers.......2007-08-30

This is a great comic novel that is both clever and funny. This is the first book I've read of Buckley's, but it certainly won't be the last. The political satire is cutting and very funny. Buckley doesn't spare anyone. Unlike most comic novels, Boomsday isn't a comedy of errors as much as it's a comedy of spin.

Media spin, the way it controls everything the see and hear and read in the media is the central theme of the book. It is this spin that takes a red-bull fueled comment on a popular blog through the political process and debated on the Senate floor.

It's a good story, very clever and worth reading.

Middle of the road for Buckley.......2007-08-26

There are two things you can always count on from Mr. Buckley: spot on political satires and unlikely but thought provoking plots.

This book follows Buckley's standard formula: A heroine who is up against the higher ups in DC who has a flawed hero with a heart of gold helping her out. Surround with outrageous caricatures and crazy situations, and let the reader enjoy the ride.

From the beginning, the action is fast and furious. It doesn't let up until the last page. In this book, Buckley skewers baby boomers' entitlement mentality, pork barrel politics, religious leaders, and blogging. It sounds like an amalgam, and it is a testament that Buckley can tie all of this together and have a fun and riveting story come out.

I really enjoyed this book. It's not as good as White House Mess or Florence of Arabia, but miles ahead of many so-called humorous novels.

Outstanding.......2007-08-23

Buckley's wit and imagination are delightfully, irrreverently outrageous, but "reality-based" as only one who knows Washington D.C. can be. The Nuncio and the Evangalist scene is sublime. This is the best comedic yarn of "DC" since O'Rourke's "Parliment of Whores".

When we tell family stories, we so often focus on the beginning and the end. The beginning is the two decades of our childhood and adolescence, and it's been the favorite narrative arc ever since Freud. What happens in your childhood does not stay in your childhood--it haunts the rest of your life. I have insisted to several friends that as parents of adult children, they too, MUST buy the book. I even bought extra copies myself and gave to relatives. It's a "keeper" in my library.

This book makes some good points but didn't go deep enough to help me. I found "When Parents Hurt: Compassionate Strategies When You and Your Grown Child Don't Get Along" to be far more helpful because the author, Dr. Joshua Coleman, provides much more guidance for a range of situations and goes into much more depth for this very difficult problem.

I was expecting more from this book than I got. The basic premise stated over and over is: Don't give advice, and hold your tongue. This seems to foster false and fake relationships. Would you want someone to "pretend" they adore you, when thet really can't stand you? I think most people want relationships that are true and real. I was hoping for a book with more advice on how to deal with specific situations, not just "keep everything to yourself" I was dissapointed in the author.

I absolutely LOVED this book...I thought it was her best book yet! it kept me smiling and laughing throughout the whole book!

In my opinion, this is not the best Kinsella's work, even though it has enough funny moments to keep you entertained. And it's not even because Becky didn't "grow up", as some other reviewers suggested. In the real life, women understand what had happened to them only after the baby is born, and so many of us just love to be not practical when it comes down to "baby stuff". So, I wasn't bothered by the fact that Becky continues to behave as if she is still 14 years old (that's certainly part of the charm, and one of the reasons for me to read these series).
It's simply that in "Shopaholic & baby" the humor of most situations wears down, the plot follows the main line of the previous books, with the variation of Luke's ex-girlfriend coming to the scene... and some of these "funny" situations actually made me cringe because of their absurdity.
In addition, I began to be annoyed by the fact that Luke is so absolutely perfect and understanding. Sophie Kinsella attempted to make him less perfect with all this "affair" story, but somehow it did not work for me - any normal guy that I know would immediately see the difference between friendship and flirt... and probably be more than a little upset about his wife's 16 offshore overdrafts!
I was able to re-read the first books in the series, when I needed to relax and rewind, but not this one. I suggest borrowing the book from the library and waiting for the next installment.

Shopaholic & Baby.......2007-08-23

Just finished reading Kinsella's latest enstallment for Becky Brandon (nee: Bloomwood). Was as funny and entertaining as all of the other books in the series. If you're a fan of Becky Brandon, I'd suggest reading this latest additon.

I enjoyed the first few Shopaholic books. But this one I started to get a little annoyed with the main character. Hasn't she learned her lesson YET? How can anyone be that much of an idiot with money? Well, maybe there are people out there like that, sadly. Anyway, the book was entertaining at times. I am probably just tired of the series.

I love the Shopaholic series, I like Becky. I like how she is obssed with shopping, celebrity OBGYN and La Mer products.
This book is no different than the former ones, very fun to read.

Easy to understand / user-friendly.......2007-10-11

This set has many forms of materials included - the quick-view card helpful for babysitters and grandparents, the DVD to fully explain the theory behind sign-language as well as properly demonstrate the motions of sign-language, and a book which covers many of the same points on theory of sign-language as the DVD. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and after only 1 showing we both picked up many signs to be able to use with our little one.

Signing with babies works.......2007-09-10

We bought Garcia's DVD for our grandson at about 4 months of age. Signs helped him express his needs and even feelings with a minimum of fussing. He is now almost 3 and very verbal & advanced. It may be that he's just a great kid, but we believe signing with babies really works.

I like the sign language. It was pretty great when our 9 month old told me he wanted milk the first time! I don't think you need the video though. You can just start repeating certain signs on your own. Just repeat them a lot and be consistent.

The problem we had is that we couldn't get our daycare providers to use the signs. So it seemed like any progress we made got undone by them. He would use the signs with them but they wouldn't recognize it. I can only imagine how that must have been frustrating and confusing for him. So make sure everyone around him is going to use the signs before you start teaching them.

Too much marketing, Not enough vocab........2007-05-26

I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.

Drawbacks:
1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently.
2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary.

Best Baby Sign Language program.......2007-05-14

I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!

I hated what to expect when you're expecting. I found it totally paranoid and annoying. This book, however, was very useful. I enjoyed the monthly breakdown of developmental skills and issues that might come up. It's in a question/answer format, which is easy to read on only a few hours sleep.

An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.

Its a useful book for any new parents. It begins by explaining what essentials to purchase for your new born, breast feeding vs. bottle feeding, post parteum then it goes into depth for the first year fo your baby's development. It will be my guide through the first year of my child's life for sure.

Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. This seemingly simple book is my son's absolute favorite! I had no idea it would be such a hit, now I know why its a classic.

The illustrations are very simple and seem old fashion compared to most newer books out there. The colors you see on the cover and all the colors in the bookk, it alternates between color and black & white pages, and yet... its adored by my 17 month son.
He roars "balloon!" and points to the drawing of the red balloon and also says 'chairs', 'mush' and 'hush'. He just loves it and I often see him flipping thru the book on his own.

We have the lapbook edition with is also a boardbook but much bigger, however I would recommend this version.
The Lap book is difficult for him to pick up and 'read' by himself and has gotten very bent up because of his laying on one side while trying to read the opposite page. Also the lap version is too big to throw in the diaper bag.

I also recommend purchasing (or recording if you have HBO) the HBO special on DVD "Goodnight Moon and Other Sleepytime Tales".

My son saw this after we bought the book and it was so neat to see him run and get his book, making the connection between the book and the visuals in the dvd.

The dvd is completely wonderful in its own right. It features Susan Sarandon telling the story twice, in the beginning and the end of the dvd. She is an excellent narrator. :)
The goodnight moon graphics are the exact same as the book but are animated a little bit.

It also features Tony Bennet singing Dreamland, Lauren Hill singing Hush Little Baby, Natalie Cole, Aaron Neville and my son's favorite song on the dvd, Twinkle Tinkle Little Star sung by Patty LaBelle. My son says 'tinkle!' whene he knows its coming and actually sings along! The visuals are gorgeous of a little girl playing among the stars.

Over all the dvd is very soothing, my son watches/listens to it after his dinner as a wind down and before we read him the Goodnight Moon book and tuck him into his crib. :) Buy this book and also buy the dvd, your child will love them both.

I give this book as a baby shower gift or a birthday gift to my friends' kids who are 5 and under. It's a sure favorite.

Best bedtime book ever!.......2007-09-28

I first had this book read to me at a public library when I was 4. I never owned it growing up, but I would borrow it and force my parents to read it to me.
I bought this book for my dear friend who is about to give birth as I write this for her little one. I think it is an integral part of the bedtime routine and it can be fun to have your child say goodnight to their room as well.

This book is a classic and my daughter has enjoyed it for many months. She is now old enough to point out the cats and mouse etc and the story is a darling one. We have bought this book many times for family and friends.

Classic Favorite!.......2007-09-17

I have read this book to my baby nearly every night since she was born. I was using an old paperback copy I had, but my 7 month old wants to turn the pages herself. So glad it's available as a board book. It's a timeless classic and a favorite.

The book was in excellent condition, but we did not receive it until at least a week after all the other items we had ordered were received. They were all going to be mailed to our grandson, so it was a little frustrating to have to wait on this one item.

This is one of Carle's best books (along with Brown Bear, Brown Bear). It teaches counting to 5, the days of the week, and how caterpillars become butterflies. The illustrations are, of course, stunning. My daughter has enjoyed this book since she was about 8 months old.

My 11 month old will sit and "read" this book for minutes at a time (that's a long time for toddlers)! She loves the different sized pages and tries to stick her fingers through the holes. Eric Carle is a brilliant author/illustrator. You're safe buying ANY of his books.

My one year old and my four year old love this book. They especially love the fruit on the pages, with holes where the Hungry Caterpillar ate through. A great book with lovely pictures.

From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.

We bought this for our daughter for her first birthday. The text is simple, teaching colors and animals. The illustrations are, of course, beautiful. She loves this book!

My 3-year-old granddaughter found this book easy to memorize. She loved being able to anticipate which animal would be next, along with its color. This, in turn, gave her the feeling of being able to read, and I believe it was this book that inspired her to learn how to read "for real" in the next few months. I'd recommend it for younger children as well.

At first my daughter was not very impressed with this book...the pictures aren't as compelling as in some of her other books. But as she's gotten older, the interactive details of this book have really made this one of her favorites. She talks and laughs at the characters for a good 20 minutes at a time. And anyone with an active 1 year old knows how impressive that is! Its sturdy design (double-folded cardboard pages) also make it fairly destroy-proof, though I'm sure there's a baby out there that will find a way!

Before I owned this book, I never really understood its allure. It seemed like it wasn't really brightly colored enough to hold my daughter's interest. Boy was I wrong! She has loved this book from the time she was about 8 months old. She's now almost 2 and it's still one of her favorites. She especially loves the little hole representing the mummy's ring and always wants to put her finger in my ring too. The one problem with the book is that it's not at all sturdy...but then again, it is quite well loved.

I thought this would have been a great book for my infant/toddler, but was very disappointed because it is not a sturdy board book. Instead, it is a regular paper back book with slightly thicker pages. This book requires extra gentle care and is not good for children at a stage where they want to touch and feel the book, as the title suggests.

I bought this book for my first child...and again for my second. It was their first interactive book. They loved patting the bunny, putting their finger through Mummy's ring, and waving bye bye to Paul and Judy. I buy this book to attach to every baby shower gift I give. Now I am reliving the fun with my grandchildren. I cannot say enough for this gem.

I love this book. Even after having it for 5 months, I still find myself referring back to it for different products. It is extremely thorough and comprehensive with it's reviews on all brands of products. This isn't the type of book that will tell you to buy the cheapest thing. It is a hybrid recommendation between product safety ratings, quality and price -- pretty much what middle class america is looking for.

Invaluable Guide for Parents-to-Be.......2007-10-13

I HIGHLY recommend that parents-to-be read this book. I read it from cover to cover during my pregnancy and was very impressed with how in-depth the authors are in providing information not only on finding the best deals, but getting the best value for your money, avoiding companies whose products have had safety issues, and identifying non-essential items. It was an essential guide for us in building our baby registry. The book is well-written, clearly lays out the information, and is not dry or boring to read.

This is the comprehensive "Consumer Reports" of every kind of baby item imaginable. I bought a copy for myself and sent one to my daughter-in-law who is expecting our first grandchild. It is so much fun for both of us to look over the rated suggestions and will allow her to make informed decisions and give us specific suggestions as we prepare for this wonderous occasion.

This is a great guide for parents and soon to be parents, or anyone looking to find the best deals and best products for baby. My wife and I were very surprised at some of the reviews and information in this book and have found is very helpful in not only getting good deals, but making sure we have the safest product. More often than not the most expensive is not the best one (strollers and baby monitors were especially helpful).
We both highly recommend this book.
