Must-have.......2006-04-23
Since my diagnosis three weeks ago I have checked out and read every book on chemo and radiation in my county's library system. This is by far the best - it's the only one I decided to go out and purchase so I could keep it around for reference. The advice is very down to earth and practical. The authors' knowledge and practical experience is evident on each page. The diagnosis of cancer sent me into an information seeking frenzy - I'm glad that I found this one right away as it de-mystified a lot of things for me. Read this one first!
Little info for Radiation.......2005-08-19
I bought this book expecting information for dealing with radiation. There was very little information on radiation at all. The book may be useful for Chemotherapy patients (which is why I give it two stars). It had no stars of value for me dealing with radiation. My doctor told me more. "Cancer for dummies" and "just get me through this" have more information.
Its good to know what you're facing.......2004-12-06
This book is great. It helped me face radiotherapy, and I incorporate this into my teaching (I'm a science teacher).
Best information.......2003-09-11
After my dad's recent diagnosis of colorectal cancer, I purchased a ton of books about his cancer & treatments. This one is the best one I've purchased so far. My dad refers to it daily to check his symtoms & even just to get alittle more educated on what he should be expecting. VERY beneficial to have.
Excellent. A must for all on chemo and/or radiation therapy.......1999-11-04
I found this book very informative, and it makes the idea of going into this type of therapy less frightening and "unknown". I am purchasing several more for people I know who are receiving chemotherapy too, so they can have access to this same knowledge. Special thanks to those who took the time to make this book available.

Book Description
Does your child really need drugs to get through the school day? More than six million children in the United States are taking stimulant medications—including Ritalin—to treat behavioral and learning problems such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). But there may very well be a better way to manage your child's emotional and learning problems, and you owe it to yourself and your child to find out.
Ritalin-Free Kids offers you a safe, effective, and natural alternative to stimulants.
"Before you give your child stimulants, read this book."
—From the preface by Edward Chapman, M.D., clinical instructor, Harvard Medical School
"I recommend this book to all parents searching for an alternative treatment to ADHD. The Ullmans demonstrate that every child can benefit from care tailored to their unique characteristics and temperment."
—Charles Moore, M.D., child and adolescent psychiatrist, New England Medical Center
"As a physician who evaluates many inattentive and overactive children, I feel that we, as a society, are using stimulant medications far too often for the treatment of ADHD. I was very impressed by Ritalin-Free Kids and definitely recommend it."
—Richard Solomon, M.D., director, Allegheny Behavioral and Child Development Services, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
"This clear, balanced, and persuasive book will really open your eyes to the possibility of homeopathic medicine to treat . . . ADHD and a number of emotional and learning problems."
—From the foreword by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., coauthor of Driven to Distraction

Years later. . . . . . .......2007-06-27
This is one of those books that stuck with me years after reading it and I felt compelled to write a review.
Chapter 2- Life in Overdrive is a great blue print of common ADHD behavior from a toddler to adulthood. Additionally, Chp 12 & 13 offers coaching techniques which focuses on the individual. p 102 "those are only your behaviors, not the real you."
Part 3 Real Stories of Real People-Successful Homeopathic Treatment of ADD - offers some insight on how specific Homeopathic Medicine helped their child.
I found in my experience that it would have been better to go to the practitioner 1st before reading Part 3 because it was too easy to reiterate some of the behaviors mentioned in the book which masked the child's unique characteristics. After the initial visit then I would have read Part 3 to see if the recommended homeopathic medicine matched the child's characteristics. Nevertheless, the practioner does a great job asking questions that relate to the child.
Note: Years ago when I read the book some of the sources recommended on p288 required an address and telephone numbers to be updated.
Lifesaving!.......2005-04-01
As the mother of four young children, I realized when one of my children was very young that he was an extremely high-energy, precocious bundle of energy. I found this book at my local library when I was trying to educate myself about the implications of ADHD, yet he was only three or four, so we waited a few more years before actually seeking treatment. Early on in our research, my husband and I agreed that we would do anything possible to improve his well-being without resorting to drugs. After a year under Dr. Reichenberg-Ullman's care, my seven year-old son has improved tremendously! Homeopathic treatment does not happen overnight, and it requires patience, and in our case, the first remedy did not make significant enough improvement, so we tried another, which has been nothing short of amazing! PLEASE READ THIS BOOK IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW IS DEALING WITH ADD/ADHD. Not only does the book include many case studies and real-life examples, I felt that it provided an overview of ADD/ADHD symptoms, conventional medications, and introduction to homeopathy. I have several copies that I loan to my son's teachers, coaches and family friends.
This changed our lives.......2005-04-01
As the mother of several boys with ADHD, I can tell you that this book changed our family dynamics forever! I had been searching for help for so many yars and not wanting to use drugs. I looked at many natural options but didn't find any lasting help. We resorted to Ritalin out of despiration. They were on this for a year before a friend fround this book and brought it to my attention. The book is well written and easy to understand. I saw my boys in so many of the stories in this book and found hope again that my children could get the help that they needed without drugs. Dr Reichenberg has subsequently treated our entire family with amazing results. Homeopathy is not just for treating ADD/ADHD. You have to read this book if your family or someone you care about is struggling with this or any other physical, or emotional issues. It will change your life!
Very much worth a shot.......2004-10-10
Considering that Ritalin is grossly overprescribed in the US, perhaps other treatments should be considered. Homeopathy is one of them. I don't know how homeopathy works, and I don't think anyone does, but it many cases it does work. That's all that matters. If your child has been diagnosed as having ADD or other behavioral and learning problems, and you have reservations about Ritalin, then it wouldn't hurt -- and just might help -- to take a look at this book.
Homeopathy is amazing.......2004-01-19
This book is fantastic. I recommend it to any person who has a ADD/ADHD child. I truly possible to make your child better without Ritalin. I may take awhile because homeopathy seems so hard, but it works. As a engineer, I don't easily believe things like this, so when I saw homeopathy work I was amazed.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive yet understandable.......2004-06-19
The book covered a lot of ground, yet was easy to understand and read. You will definitely understand more about the types of problems prolo handles, and how it works. Highly recommended to anybody considering this form of treatment.
Promising but am still somewhat skeptical.......2003-04-09
I have suffered from dire chronic muscular pain in my neck and shoulder and low buttocks regions for well over two years and it's been hell to say the least. I have done everything imaginable to fight this - I have seen three accupuncturists, three massage therapists and four physical therapists, taken NSAIDs, RICE techinques and yet my pain still persists.
One doc i saw had the arrogance of telling me that i had to live with this condition, as yet still undiaganosed. But after a lot of patient persistence, doctor shopping (over 10 docs believe it or not), opening up books like this and a subtle hint from a very kind chinese massage therapist that i had injured ligaments i finally found out that i had upper body myofascial pain syndrome (great sigh of relief) and then i came across ligament reconstruction therapy (aka prolotherapy). Given my persistent nature, i have compiled a countless amount of research on this and this book is one great source of it.
And then came Dr. Hauser's explanation of myofascial pain on page 198 and a light went off in my head. I made an appt to see a prolotherapist (from the getprolo.com referral list), asked him a ton of Qs and eagerly looking forward to my first visit.
One of the problems i have with this book is the lack of information on bad things that can happen as a result of prolotherapy. I realize the authors are enthusiatic about their realm of expertise but in real life there has to be risks for everything we take, the disclaimer glosses over these, it's too bad the authors did not elaborate on what a bad result means.
Nevertheless for me, the risks are well worth taking given the alternatives and living with chronic pain.
Bottom line, do your homework and research this. If it proves effective for me, i will come back and add two more stars.
prolo Miracle!!!.......2003-03-14
I found this book and the treatment of Prolo for my wife. She had suffered for two years after a fall that caused chronic whiplash syndrome. She was off of work for months at a time and had severe headaches, vertigo, insomnia, terrible constant migraines, memory loss, shooting pains in arms, neck, and shoulder, as well as depression. We had mri's, cat scans, x- rays, accupuncture, accupressure, physical therapy, chiro., and nothing helped. Other doctors said there was nothing wrong and she was faking it!!!! Within days of first treatment we knew something was different. Within 6 weeks she was back at work and has been steadily improving. She is about 90% totally healed after four treatments. Insurance did pay about 75% of the cost also. Buy this book if you have chronic pain, buy it today and start to live again!!!! Dr. Hauser is MY personal hero, he gave me back my wife!!!!!!!!!
Costochondritis Sufferer and Skeptic Sees the Light.......2002-01-28
I have suffered with costochondritis or Tietze's Syndrome (which is chronic pain in the chest wall caused by ribs slipping out of position) for over 4 years. The pain has been excruciating at times, and being directly over my heart, has sent me to the emergency room with thoughts of a heart attack.
I had seen many doctors and finally, one suggested prolotherapy, although he didn't do it himself. He suggested I do some research and find a doctor. Well, my research lead to this book which I ordered and read thoroughly in a few days. It is an easy read, although a bit on the "ra ra" side. It did convince me of the logic of the treatment and I am in the early stages of therapy now. I am a bit concerned with the lack of objective information out there, and if that is what you are looking for, this isn't your book. But..... it is a good place to start.
Good luck to everyone out there with chronic pain!!!!
At final, I had decided to translate to Korean, and I did!.......2001-06-08
This is wonderful book to help me open my eyes to the another scope of practice. This book tells what is the Natural & Healing and Cure itself! I had read this book in 1999, I decided to translate it. Finally, "Prolo Your Pain Away" in Korean has just published in May. I hope that Prolo becomes more popular and helps patients suffering from chronic illness.

Customer Reviews:
If you have a substance abuse problem, a must read!.......2002-09-30
The author feels that many substance abusers have an underlying emotional problem like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc. They really need to be treated for this in order to get the substance abuse under control.
If you are having a substance abuse problem, read this book and be sure you get screened by a real professional for emotional problems. Keep an open mind and save yourself a lot of trouble and heartache. When the emotional issues get resolved, the substance abuse problem may practically take care of itself!
A great depression "primer".......2001-12-18
A great "primer" on depression. This is the first book I read on depression after reading Darkness Visible, and I still think it's one of the best, especially as the author's daughter, who suffered from depression, contributed to it.
Real Life Explanation of Depressive Illness and it's Affects.......2000-09-26
This was the first work on depression authored with a real life perspective on the illness and its affects on "life" that I had read. Having been trained in the mental health field and being employed in a mental health related job, this was the first work to help me feel better about my own illness. It was so easy to be understanding and supportive of others with this illness, but when it came time for me to understand and to be caring for myself, it all but elluded me.
Also in this work I found the connections between depression, addiction, weight related issues, and hormonal problems. Every little piece of my spotty medical history came into focus under the hands of the author in this book. I have yet to read anything that has helped me on the road to understanding my depressive illness any more than this book. Having a lay person relate information through her own real experiences is a definate plus as well.
This book saved my relationship.......1999-04-14
This is a very accessable book for anyone concerned about depression in a loved one or yourself. Written so people (not just professionals) can understand it. I've given it to several friends who were helped, too. Best of all, it helped my partner realize the behavior wasn't crazy but treatable. Excellent book.
This book takes the guilt out of mental illness........1998-07-17
This book is up to date in its information. It is very informative, and reader friendly. It explains the cause of some mental illness, addictions, phobias and anxieties. These down to earth explanations take all the guilt out of having a disorder, disability, or addiction. This distancing from self blame enables action and change.
Book Description
By the millennium Americans were spending more than 12 billion dollars yearly on antidepressant medications. Currently, millions of people in the U.S. routinely use these pills. Are these miracle drugs, quickly curing depression? Or is their popularity a sign that we now inappropriately redefine normal life problems as diseases? Are they prescribed too often or too seldom? How do they affect self-images?
David Karp approaches these questions from the inside, having suffered from clinical depression for most of his adult life. In this book he explores the relationship between pills and personhood by listening to a group of experts who rarely get the chance to speak on the matter--those who are taking the medications. Their voices, extracted from interviews Karp conducted, color the pages with their experiences and reactions--humor, gratitude, frustration, hope, and puzzlement. Here, the patients themselves articulate their impressions of what drugs do to them and for them. They reflect on difficult issues, such as the process of becoming committed to medication, quandaries about personal authenticity, and relations with family and friends.
The stories are honest and vivid, from a distraught teenager who shuns antidepressants while regularly using street drugs to a woman who still yearns for a spiritual solution to depression even after telling intimates "I'm on Prozac and it's saving me." The book provides unflinching portraits of people attempting to make sense of a process far more complex and mysterious than doctors or pharmaceutical companies generally admit.
Customer Reviews:
Not just for patients - doctors and family should read this book too........2007-01-06
I really enjoyed this book.
The book comprises 50 interviews with people who have taken medications for depression or bipolar (manic depression) together with the observations of the author, a long-term patient with depression and anxiety.
The book opens with the author's discussion of his own unsuccessful attempts to get off anti-depressants. Much of the book suggests that patients are ambivalent about taking meds for depression and in many cases are eager to live a life free of prescription drugs. Although he does concede that while there were many people who resisted medication there were some who welcomed it with relief.
Doctors encourage patients to take medications likening the drugs to treatments for diabetes or headaches. However there is one criticial difference. These are mind altering substances. Dr Karp discusses the wholistic impacts of taking meds, taking into account improvements in mood but also the side effects of meds which may include nausea, weight gain, loss of libido and a drugged feeling.
Also as the author points out many of these drugs are relatively new. While they have been tested and found safe this is only within the parameters of their testing. If a drug has only been around for 10 years there is no way to know what it's long term effect may be ...
In my experience with doctors they are all reading from the same script. Chin up try harder push through. you're not really tired and drugged out feeling you're just not trying hard enough. It was wonderful to read a book that sympathetically portrayed all aspects of anti depressants.
Dr Karp likens the relationship with meds to a marriage. I thought he took this analogy too far. I agree that many people go on meds not realising it may be a lifetime proposition but the whole engagement and marriage scenario was stretched.
This is a great read for anyone taking medication for anxiety, bipolar or depression. For caregivers, relatives and support people dealing with a loved one with depression and anxiety it offers insights into the struggles that many people experience with meds.
I definitely recommend this book. It would be 5 star except for two things. The book isn't especially objective - the interviewees are at the extreme end of the spectrum and may not be representative as a while. My second concern is that the ambivalence of patients to take meds may encourage some people to quit their anti-depressants. I would definitely like doctors, psychologists and other health professionals to read this book and gain a better understanding of the confusion that many patients experience.

When flutist Eugenia Zukerman developed a rare lung disease and began taking the powerful drug prednisone as part of her treatment, she was subjected--with little choice and less preparation--to a barrage of side effects: intense mood swings, bloating, changes in her hair and skin, gastrointestinal problems, and more. Physician (and sister) Julie was shocked to discover how few materials were available to help patients cope with this difficult medication. Together, the distinguished sisters created a highly readable, easy-to-understand, and complete guide through the treatment experience.
Coping with Prednisone begins with the basics, leading readers through the many promises and perils of prednisone, from its side effects to a diet that promises to "beat the bloat and the munchies" with helpful recipes. What makes this guide compelling is not only the easy-to-chew, easy-to-digest presentation, but also the sisters' unique way through it. They include information on such common yet daunting problems as changing doctors, treatment for the very young and very old, long-term medication, and withdrawal from high-dose steroids. Tables analyzing generic and brand-name drugs, various preparations, and organizations that offer help conclude this outstanding and much-needed volume.
Book Description
Approximately one million Americans per year take high doses of prednisone and related drugs (glucocorticoids) to treat serious illnesses and conditions ranging from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis to kidney disease to organ transplantation. Wile these medicines may have unpleasant, even devastating side effects, including gastrointestinal problems, intense mood swings, changes in hair and skin, and increased susceptibility to infection, they may also be the only treatment available for serious or life-threatening illnesses. When the world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zuckerman was prescribed prednisone to combat a rare lung disease, she teamed up with her sister, Julie R. Ingelfinger, a well-known specialist in pediatric nephrology and hypertension at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to write the first ever, comprehensive guide for patients undergoing this difficult treatment.Packed with everything your doctor didn't have time to tell you, including recipes, exercises, and tips based on personal experience, Coping with Prednisone is an invaluable handbook for health-care workers, caregivers, and especially for patients themselves.

Coping with Prednisone.......2005-08-10
As a woman with asthma and COPD - I spend a lot of time coping with prednisone. I suffer from Steroid Psychosis and a thousand other side effects from this drug that enables me to breathe but distorts my reality. When I started reading this book, I felt that at last, at long last - here was some validation for what I had been going through for a good many years. I will buy a copy of this book for each of my grown children so that they will be able to understand some of what I go through - I think they will understand me better. I, for one, am thankful to have stumbled upon this book. I highly recommend this to anyone taking prednisone or living with someone who does. It will help.
Help available to those on Prednisone.......2001-01-04
I cannot believe it has taken me so long to find this book. I am a long term prednisone user and am always looking for information about this drug, it's side effects and ways to cope with all those "things" prednosone does. The authors have compiled a wealth of information, including personal experiences, in a very concise easy to read book. (This in itself is signifacant to those of us with problems concentrating!) This book contains very accurate discriptions of the effects of long term prednisone use along with very practical advice on how to cope with the changes that occur. I could identify with many situations presented and found some very helpful advice. The advice is given by a prednosine user as well as a physician.
I would (and do) recommend this book to anyone beginning their treatment with prednosone, those who have been on prednisone and most of all to the family members and care givers of those on this "miracle" drug.
Prednisone, Pemphigus and Me.......2000-12-13
I have a rare, autoimmune disease called Pemphigus Vulgaris. When I was diagnosed I was placed on a high dose of prednisone in 1998 and I am still on prednisone to help keep my disease under control.
I knew nothing about my rare disease or about prednisone and found this book "Coping with Prednisone" which became my lifeline as to exactly what prednisone was, its side-effects and what I could do to help prevent many devastating side-effects of a drug that was to become my friend and my foe.
I still use it as my bible of information on prednisone and refer to it often, as new questions or problems arise. Although it isn't specifically written for my disease, I found it to be convenient to read and easy to refer to.
Actually, when I found the book was available on Amazon.com, I read a review here by someone else who had pemphigus and I contacted him via his email. I ordered my book and have never looked back.
I have come a long way since I bought this book back in 1998 and have become very knowlegeable about my disease and prednisone, including writing my own online newsletter about pemphigus.
So, I would highly recommend buying this book if you want to learn a lot about prednisone...no matter the disease or medical condition you may have that calls for you taking prednisone....especially if you have to take prednisone for more than a few months.
Yes, the Prednisone lights are on, but nobody really is home.......2000-08-09
I was placed on a long-term treatment using Prednisone two years prior to the initial publication of this book to combat kidney disease. I had only wished that time would have been in my favor and I could have had this book in hand on the first day that I started the regiment. It discusses all those things that doctors don't quite like to scare you with before you begin. This is the story, written in the style of a journal or diary of one person's endurance of the drug and the side effects that she experienced. She also recommends several ways to handle or compromise with the harsh side effects of a very effective medicine.
I purchased this book for two reasons. First, I wanted to somehow validate the crazy experiences that I was having. Those undergoing the therapy feel very much alone with their experiences and have a difficult time recognizing its merits. The severe behavioral problems that evolve in the recipient of Prednisone or other cortocosteroids are under some very harsh criticism by peers and family who do not personally understand the very constant, real and aggravating side effects. It is somewhat comforting to know that these behavioral problems are not a figment of the imagination, as our peers and family may suggest. The author(s) do a superb job of discussing those behaviors and suggest ways to get around them.
The second reason that I wanted to browse this book was to read about any complications that I may encounter when the drug treatment was finally stopped. This subject was covered very lightly, but I got the general notion of what to expect and the time required. I was satisfied with what the author related and those observations seemed good, true and accurate.
Being that a person on strong doses of Prednisone is somewhat out of character, it was a good idea that the duo published this book after her experience was complete. We patients are somewhat mentally hyper-emotional while undergoing treatment and I feel that a complete evaluation of the use of Prednisone would have only been useful if written by someone in a normal and emotionally-balanced state of mind.
This book is especially good for parents who are desperately trying to understand the reasons for the behavior of one of their children who must undergo this treatment. I am not sure that friends, siblings or other family members would find it helpful in order to completely understand what friend, brother or sister is experiencing. They'd still chalk us off as being "out of our gourd!"
In summary, I recommend this book to all who question the drug and its use as a form of validation, comfort of understanding or help in recognizing what to expect. It may be the written form of a self-help group, and in some cases, a "how to" book for getting through it all.
Excellent source of information!.......1999-05-23
I have been on Prednisone for almost 2 yrs. and I wish my Doctor had handed me this book 2 yrs. ago! It covers the side effects of this drug better than any other souce I have found. It also helped me understand that as I come off of using Prednisone that one is not instantly back to normal. I can certainly recommend this book.

This Book Saved My Life.......2004-06-06
Some time ago, I was living in a hellish state that was like some kind of bad drug trip: blurry consciousness, constant depression and lethargy, memory loss, attention deficit, and frequent suicidal thoughts that were nearly carried out on several occasions.
One day I was wandering in a haze after work, went inside a book store, and sought out books on depression. I read the premise of this book, and thought "what the hell, worth a shot."
After about 10 days of diet and nutritional modification to boost the mood-elevating brain chemicals as recommended in the book, I became a different person, and noticed a greatly increased energy level, and even reversal of hair loss! There were still some serious biochemical imbalances (such as chronic "yeast" and bacterial infections, food allergies, and chemical sensitivities) that affected my mental health, and remained undiscovered, but the nutritional information in this book set me on the right path. The sun began to shine again, and despite the remaining untreated conditions, there were enough "ups" to make life worth living again, and give me hope for the medication-free recovery that eventually did come about when I eventually became aware of and treated those other issues.
This book saved my life, and finally explained why some people can keep a smile through the worst misfortunes while others can be miserable while living the life of royalty.
Been there, still doing that........2002-04-04
I'm one who is helped by this program. I go off the program, get depressed (I cry alot - feel sad), back on, feel fine, feeling weepy goes away. Brain chemistry seems to be be just a little off. Cost is minimal. Vendor suggested I read this back in 94. Been taking L-tryosine since. 2 gr/d. 4 gr. when business is bad. I have a high anxiety wife, she is much more mellow when she takes it regularly. She has noticed the difference.
May not work for everyone as everyones chemistry is different but it is certainly worth a try, just make sure you keep at it for 2 or 3 months as it is not an instant fix.
Instant Hope.......2000-08-17
Everyone with depression should have this book, especially if it's your first book on how you can treat your depression with nutritional supplements, yes, even suicidal depression. Dr. Slagle's simple and easy-to-understand explanations give you the "instant hope" you so badly need. Her knowledge and experience in treating the physical causes of depression will give you the confidence to begin helping yourself out of the lost world of depression. I sincerely hope Dr. Slagle (TheWayUp.com) will re-print this book even just as it is.
this book will be valid 1000 years ahead from now!.......2000-06-15

Educate yourself while you wait for answers.......2007-09-01
The biggest fear about cancer, is the unknown. I attended a Q & A session at my college with the doctors and author of this book. These people are passionate about the subject matter. I bought this book for my mother-in-law, who is newly diagnosed with breast cancer after looking at it. She loved it, and her husband read it too. It provides real information that you need to know to know about cancer and treatment of cancer. It demystifies, explains things, and is a very reliable source of information. I think this is the first book that people should read if they or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer.
A must read .......2007-04-16
I read this book the night before my sister's first visit to her oncologist for treatment of lymphoma. Then I gave it to her.
It helps to make the incomprehensible a little easier to understand. The day of my sister's last radiation visit, she gave it to a mother of a 16-year-old brain cancer patient. She urged her to pass it on when she was finished with it.
I recently bought another copy of Chemo and Radiation for Dummies through Amazon for a friend whose daughter has ovarian cancer. She and her family were so appreciative.
A MUST for all new cancer patients.......2007-02-15
I wish I had ordered this book prior to beginning my radiation treatment. This book, while repetitive in areas, leaves no stone unturned. Prepares you for the "worst" and gives great tips. Especially informative with the Port IV and other chemo/radiation nuaces. You can never go wrong with the Dummie Series of books! :)
A big help after a scary diagnosis.......2006-11-07
Chemotherapy and Radiation for Dummies was the first resource I turned to after getting my cancer diagnosis, and it helped me quell the fear and begin to understand what was ahead of me. The book is well-organized so that you can pick and choose the chapters you need when you need them. As a breast cancer survivor, Patricia Corrigan writes with authority, compassion, and humor. The book told me what I needed to know about the chemo drugs I'd be taking and their side effects along with very practical information such as how to take care of my teeth during treatment. I continue to refer back to it when a new issue arises. I've recommended it to other patients and they've found it helpful, too.
Chemotherapy and Radiation for Dummies.......2006-05-09
This book is wonderful for those going through the challenges of chemotherapy and/or radiation. I purchased it for my mom----who is now in the middle of this experience herself. Wish I would have known about it months ago! My mom loves that it is written by two oncologists---for the medical info---and by an author (Patricia Corrigan)--who has personal experience with chemo and radiation herself. Mom also loves that it has an index to look up particular topics when needed. She later told me a couple tips about chemo that she learned from a Pat Corrigan. I thought she was talking about some friend of hers, but found out she was talking about the author---Patricia Corrigan---quoting from her book!! As if she was her close friend!! She was able to laugh about things that Patricia mentioned (the "fuzzy" thinking for one thing---that goes away after chemo is over!) Patricia's sense of humor and encouragement are really appreciated by my mom and I. What a gift this book is!
Book Description
Cancer and Vitamin C explains in plain language the nature and known causes of this disease. It also weighs the value and limitations of various modes of treatment: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones, immunotherapy, and a number of unorthodox ones. The value of vitamin C as an adjunct therapy is corroborated by detailed accounts of cancer patients who have derived varying degrees of benefit from vitamin C treatment.

LICENSED NURSE WITNESSED VIT. C THERAPY.......2004-03-25
As a medical professional I have used this book to preform vitamin c therapy on cancer patients. Even A friend of mine was diagnosed with brain tumor and experienced a complete remission after following the guidelines in this book. Funny how the doctor who saved his life was severely reprimanded for performing vitamin c infusions.
I still don't believe it and neither did the neuro surgeons.
This book explains why the A.M.A. and how the A.M.A. discredits vitamin c trials and their results by pointing out the discrepancies in testing, misleading language, and a total lack of objectivity which should always be prevalent in any scientific discussion. Really, if a therapy is safe, cheap, and provides hope, what's the big objection?
A real eye opener! Extremely informative! A must for all cancer patients!
Snake oil ..........2003-09-02
This book is an example of "conspiracy medicine". This area of "alternative" belief appeals to those who always prefer to believe that there is a great secret that could save all humanity, and which is being kept from us by the Powers for their own nefarious reasons.
In this case, the conspiracy is due to the "fact" that, if we all swallowed our own weight in vitamin C daily, we could put the entire medical establishment out of business. But, although vitamin C is important for good health, it is not a miracle cure. Repeated, carefully constructed studies show that it does not prolong the lives of people with cancer. It also does not prevent the common cold. And how's this for a conspiracy theory? The Linus Pauling Institute of Medicine's largest corporate donor is Hoffman-La Roche, the pharmaceutical giant that produces most of the world's vitamin C.
(It should perhaps also be pointed out that, despite ingesting vast quantities of vitamin C for many years, Dr. Pauling died of cancer. I recommend the curious to search the archives at quackwatch.com for more information on this and other dangerous "alternative" medical beliefs.)
Finally a scientific book that leaves no rebuttals about C!.......2002-10-01
This book is excellent. It is one of the few "layman's" books out there that actually present referenced scientific research for the public to truly understand. And the research involves an extremely important health aspect---why millions of people around the world are dying from cancer every year, and why most of them do not have to die if they take several grams of Vitamin C daily. Personally I recommend calcium ascorbate, because it's buffered, and it won't upset a person's stomach. I have taken the liberty of referencing a few sentences of Pauling and Cameron's work in the Cancer chapter of my book "The Failures of American Medicine"...
Significant increases in life expectancy with vitamin C.......2001-03-06
Cameron and Pauling treated a large series of terminally ill cancer patients with massive doses of vitamin C. They saw significant increases in the life expectancy of these patients, including some complete remissions.
They gave a later group of terminally ill patients a broad spectrum of other vitamins and minerals with their vitamin C. These patients had even larger increases in life expectancy. Results were best with cancers of the reproductive system.
A Japanese study agrees with Cameron and Pauling but a Mayo Clinic study does not.
cancer and vitamin c.......2000-01-28
this is the book that explain not only the conection and the actions of vitamin c on cancer, but also explain the use of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the kinds of cancers that it is necessary, and in what kinds it is not.in all over the book there are many case histories that are covered and the explanations on how vitamin c is realy woking on all types of cancers, and why.the expirience of both,( the grate late two times nobel price winner:linus pauling), and the scotish-oncologist: ewan cameron, that in 10 years of therapy of thousands of patients make that book possible to be published.this is linus pauling's last book before he died in 8.19.1994 .in short and in general, it is realy a great book of a combination of a chemist, and an oncologist.i am recommended very much to every one.

Great Advice for a Bad Situation.......2004-09-16
My mother is currently going thru chemotherapy and this book is incredibly helpful. Nancy Bruning, the author, is herself a breast cancer survivor and went thru chemotherapy.
"Coping With Chemotherapy" covers every physical symptom I have had to look up as well as the emotional aspects of cancer and chemo. In the beginning of the book Bruning also provides information on the "basics" of how cancer and chemo work...WITHOUT using too much jargon. And because Bruning has been thru this HERSELF, you know she's not blowing smoke up your butt. Bottom line? If you or a loved one are currently getting chemo or trying to find out about some options, this book is a refreshingly honest and caring help.
The basic information book for all cancer patients........1999-03-11
Bruning covers aspects of curing Cancer that no one is prepared for, in a factual, non-pitying way. This book is a departure from many "I Survived the Big C" books that gloss over how to contend with symptoms and side effects that do have remedies.
As she covers each topic, you may find her own personal experience tucked among the information. But her recovery is not the subject here. It was the variety of information, some outside the traditional approaches with their risks, besides what foods may be helpful.
When I joined CANSURVIVORS, a help group through American Cancer Society, I knew that a factual help book like this was immensely important to ease people through their illness. I refer to it all the time, but often have given my copy away again!
After my treatment, with many bumps along the way despite the best of care, I was determined that a different book was needed. I would write it. I organized the topics, and was searching for professionals to interview. I was startled to find that Bruning followed my outline in "Coping with Chemotherapy" two years earlier. She had written my book very well! I thank her again.
Very helpful tool for those facing chemo........1998-01-10
I have purchased several copies of this book to give to friends who were facing or coping with chemo. All of them thanked me and said that it helped them so much. I am buying another one today, sadly, for yet another friend. It tells you things that your doctor may not and let you know how to help yourself.
