5 out of 5 stars Common Sense Parenting is an enthusiastically recommended fundamental guide........2007-05-12

Written by expert authors Ray Burke, Ph.D., Ron Herron, & Bridget A. Barnes, who have many combined years of professional experience creating and delivering Girls and Boys Town's parent training programs in the United States and other countries worldwide, Common Sense Parenting: Using Your Head as Well as your Heart to Raise School-Aged Children is a practical guide for parents and caretakers. Chapters offer sensible advice and simple techniques for encouraging good behavior, correcting problem behavior, teaching social skills, helping children succeed in school, handling peer pressure, and much more. Now in a newly revised third edition with more answers for commonly asked parental questions, as well as additional insights into modern quandaries such as computer misuse and Internet dangers, Common Sense Parenting is an enthusiastically recommended fundamental guide.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Parenting Resource.......1998-09-23

This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"

The following review was done by the National Parenting Center upon awarding the Common Sense Parenting Book as well as the Common Sense Parenting Audiotape with its coveted Seal of Approval.

"When it comes to reading advice about parenting, what we've discovered is that parents like to be spoken to in a direct, common sense manner. No need to use flowery or highbrowed language, just give me some tips and I'll take it from there. Like the name implies, this book and the like-titled audiotape delivers the goods. Common sense tips and good ideas presented in an easy to read and listen to format. Parents mentioned that they really liked the written exercises which serve to help reinforce what you've learned. Here is a logical sensible approach to parenting, featuring good examples that our parents give a thumbs ups."

Book Description

Hugs and smiles and playtime: If only parenting 2- to 5-year-olds was this simple. But any parent of a toddler or preschooler knows that it also often requires dealing with whining, tantrums, "no, I won't" and other generally naughty behavior that tests the limits of your ingenuity and patience. How can parents balance nurturing behaviors that demonstrate love and affection with the discipline all children need to learn and thrive? Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers shows parents how discipline can be more about teaching than punishment and more positive than negative for both you and your child.

Included in these pages:

How to set reasonable expectations based on your child's age, development, and abilities

How to use a parent's version of "show and tell" to both prevent problems and correct misbehavior

How to use praise like a compass, helping your child stay on the right path

How to create plans for staying calm for you and your child

How to use consistency, consequences, and practice to help your child learn what you expect of him or her

How to celebrate special rituals and everyday routines as cherished family traditions

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-07-18

This book is VERY basic and overall boring. There are better books out there for sure. Try your local library!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-03-09

The book is easily readable, a quick read, which I appreciated. And many things were discussed, not necessarily answered for me, but things I am thinking about were answered. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my situation is different from the author's situation, so some of the material misses the mark (for me).

At the same time I will keep the book for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-11-05

This is a great book - my husband and I have put the advice into action and it works! For example. practice with your toddler, prevent bad behavior: my husband took our 2 1/2 year daughter trick or treating. After a few houses he came back and said she wouldn't say thank you to anyone. I got down to her level and we practiced, you knock on the door, say trick or treat, I pretended to give her candy and told her to say thank you. I was very specific but kept it in her terms and it worked!! She told everyone else that night thank you. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't feel like we needed it, it's really helped. They talk about praise, time out and reminding mom and dad how important it is to stay calm. After all, they're watching everything we do even when we don't think they're even listening.

4 out of 5 stars That's why they say Common Sense..........2006-04-21

A very helpful book and well written. Alot of the points in topics are common sense and when you read them your like well "duh" but you'd be surprised how refreshing it is to have these points acknowledged. I like how the book starts with a little background in child development and offers a better understanding of a child as over the years it is easily forgotten what it is like to be a child and their mind set. I do love the book and like how it is set up where you do have to read through the book to get the whole concept. The only reason I did not give it five stars even though I loved it, the book although says toddlers (which to me is 18mnths-2yrs) it seems like it was more geared to an older child possible 4 yrs and older. I could be wrong but alot of the technique and such have not worked on my almost two year old and neither did the approach. But over all it was an excellent book and would reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely excellent.......2003-04-23

i just had to take the time to write this review to let people know how wonderful this book is. If you don't believe in yelling at or hitting your children, but you can't figure out what else to do, this is the book for you. I have a 4 year old and have been following this book's advice for about 6 months and it works every time. it worked right from the beginning. It made sense to me and fit my style of wanting to "teach" my daughter rather than scold and threaten. It gives you examples and step by step instructiions. It is not a book that you can just "flip through" to get answers to your questions. You have to "read" it all the way through because one section links to the other. But it reads easily and quickly like you are talking to someone who understands. You can read it in a day or two. My copy is highlighted and dog-eared all the way through. I can't say enough about this book. My daughter and I are BOTH happier and better "behaved". I hope the authors have written other books on the next age group and adolescents.

Book Description

Sam Margulies, Ph.D., J.D., one of the most experienced mediators in the country, shares his experience to help men make this unpleasant process as quick and amicable as possible. His suggestions on how to manage this turbulent period will significantly minimize the effects of divorce on the separating couple and on any children in the relationship. Taking into consideration custody issues, and giving specific financial and legal advice, this book will inform men about how to choose a lawyer, how to deal with a pre-nup,and when not to go to trial. Dr. Margulies explores all the elements that make for a good, fair divorce, as well as the importance of timing and the decision to get counseling. He also explains how to avoid a legal mess, how to predict the long-term implications of alimony and child support, how to divide up property, and how to negotiate the final agreement. In A Man's Guide to a Civilized Divorce, Dr. Margulies helps men avoid the treacherous waters of divorce and illustrates how, with the right advice, one can actually come through the process in pretty good shape.

This book is awesome--should be included with any predivorce meetinf with an atty. Not just for men!!

5 out of 5 stars Get this book and seriously consider following its advice.......2007-01-04

This book has a lot of good insights into the divorce process. More than anything else I got out of it was the idea that the relationship is not going to end. So working through the process with that in mind has really helped me get ready to go forward.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone struggling to find an even keel as you head into the rough seas of divorce.

5 out of 5 stars Made a difference.......2006-09-29

My divorce was handled via mediation and ended up being (relatively) civilized (though still painful), in part because of the advice in this book. As the commenter from Boston noted it does take two rationale people to make this occur, and I was fortunate to be in that situation. But in many ways it was because of this guide that I approached the situation more rationally and in the end that helped make a difference.

1 out of 5 stars In a better world maybe..........2005-08-11

This book assumes you do not have a spouse who wants nothing other than to cut off your balls and take everything you've got and/or that she is willing to act with some degree of rationality. Well...guess what. That is simply not the case all the time. Maybe if I had the sense to start my divorce several years earlier, it would have been possible to utilize the very sensible advice in this book. Unfortunately, this advice was of no practical benefit in my situation and no amount of understanding or common sense on my part would have changed the situation.

Good luck to anyone in this situation. I screwed myself in a number of ways by thinking my soon to be ex-spouse would react rationally and favorably if I only acted sensibly and fairly.

3 out of 5 stars Inaccurate title.......2005-02-02

The title of this book should be: "The wealthy, middle-aged man's..." The book has good information, but none of the men in any of the examples in this book make less than $100,000/yr, and all of the advice is geared towards men in their late 40's earning 100K+.
[...]
Example: when advising "us" on the costs expected in setting up a new two-bedroom household, the author claims that it could cost $10-15,000 if we play it safe. In other words, 1/4 of my annual income. I must be a financial genius because somehow I was able to do it for about 1,200.

About me: 28, 2 kids, full-time university employeed computer, programming and design professional. (Haven't had time to get that JD, MD or PhD... yet). I should have known this wasn't the book for me when I read on page one that a 28 yr old guy divorcing 3 years into a marriage could more- or- less write it off without financial difficulty. Uh huh.

That said, you can glean the kernel of the book no matter what: wanting the best for your wife's finances and creating a positive working relationship with her are the two best things a man can to do to ensure that, a) your children are happy, and feel safe, b) you don't waste a lot of money on legal fees, and c) you are "civil".

Book Description

Dr. Christophersen takes the commonsense approach that children are little people but still people. How well children are prepared for life and how much they will enjoy life has a lot to do with how they are raised. "Catch 'em Being Good" is one of Dr. Christophersen's favorite pieces of advice. The entire book, Little People, is built around guidelines that will help you to encourage your child's positive behavior. The book discusses the importance of touching to support a child's emotional development and self-esteem. Dr. Christophersen's advice also comforts parents by discussing what is normal and acceptable behavior. Dr. Christophersen emphasizes the importance of "time-in" with children. Only with enriched time-in, is "time-out" even possible.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-03-17

My pediatrician recommended this book to me when my son was one and we started having power struggle issues. It has been a great resource and I have referred to it often over the last few years.

5 out of 5 stars Little People.......2004-08-31

I was delighted to find this book after being disappointed in the child rearing books I'd read. Little people provides both simple explanations and detailed instructions for specific difficulties (e.g., problems with sleeping, toilet training, and shopping). Best of all, it gives an overall parenting strategy that can be adapted to essentially any situation from infancy through adolescence. I will forever be grateful to Dr. C. for his invaluable advice.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, Easy to Apply, Excellent Parent's Primer.......2002-03-18

Christophersen provides a simple perspective for parents to apply to in raising their children - you are a full-time, non-stop teacher. Based on this perspective, the best way to be the best teacher is to spend time with your children. Christophersen's guidelines are easy to follow and produce immediate results. An easy and indispensible read for every parent, even if your children are beyond the toddler age. The best child-raising book I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GIFT.......2000-04-26

Having bought this book after seeing Dr. Chstopherson on TV and speaking with him about his discipline methods, I couldn't wait to buy this book. What a gift. His techniques repect the child as well as the parents need to discipline their children. All information in the book is concrete and to the point making perfect sense of how we should discipline our children. My son is now 5 years old and I refer back to it regularly. I also teach disciplilne techniques to parents and reccommend this book always.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. C's methods are easy to understand--and they work!.......1998-06-28

I'm SO glad Amazon.com now carries Little People! I like to give it as a baby shower gift, but it's been hard to get outside of the Kansas City area.

Dr. C. is great at explaining simple ways of bringing up and disciplining kids. For instance, he says "catch 'em being good." My heart just breaks when I see a child trying to please a parent who doesn't notice or reward the child with a few kind words or a moment's attention. Dr. C. also explains how to adjust your methods to the age of the child--for example, don't lecture a 2 year old about the benefits of not crossing streets, because she's not old enough yet to understand the lecture. But best of all, his methods make sense. There's no psychobable. There's no guilt. His techniques are easy to remember, don't hurt children, and they work like magic. I just wish more parents used them (especially when I'm in a busy grocery store or on a crowded airplane).

1 out of 5 stars To Guarendi, discipline = punishment only.......2007-09-06

This book was given to me, so I read through it and quickly realized it was not for my husband and I. Our personal philosophy is that discipline means "instruction" or "training," which doesn't necessarily have to be synonymous with "punishment." Only once in Guarendi's book did I see the word discipline used to mean "self-control;" the other times, the word was used as a synonym for punishment -- why not just say "punish" instead?

I was especially disturbed by his "rules for a fair fight" with regard to sibling squabbles. Basically, punish your kids for telling you about a problem (that's "tattling"), punish all kids involved in a squabble equally...unless they can keep their discord out of your hearing range, in which case you will ignore it. My parents used the same "technique" and my sister and I learned to fight, threaten and manipulate to "resolve" conflict. We also learned that starting a fight was a great way to "punish" each other (as long as we didn't mind getting some ourselves) since mom/dad would swoop in and mete out punishment to all. How are children supposed to learn how to reach resolution and compromise if their parents do not teach them?

For parents who take a primarily punitive approach to discipline, this book will give you confidence in your methods. For those who think teaching discipline means teaching (and modeling) self-control and who want to guide their children to respect others and resolve conflict by practicing making good choices, I'd recommend checking out Dr. Becky Bailey's Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline: The 7 Basic Skills for Turning Conflict into Cooperation.

4 out of 5 stars Full of common sense.......2007-07-07

I became familiar with Dr. Guarendi through several mothering and homeschooling books....he's great. The aspect that struck me as most interesting is how many of the "experts" give us advice that actually produces the problems we wish to avoid! And he doesn't just say this....you get real-life experiences that just about anyone can relate to. I was nodding my head all the way through, realizing I had seen such things time and again in the past. As with his book "Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime", Dr. Guarendi shows that the only thing you really need in parenting is plain old common sense.

5 out of 5 stars How to create harmony in your family.......2006-03-15

I purchased this book after watching Dr. Guarendi give an interview on EWTN. I realized that even though I am a fairly consistent parent, I could work at it a little more. Once I read the book, I was shocked and chagrined to discover I was less consistent than I thought, and the main reason we had so much discord with one of our children stemmed from my refusing to completely take authority. This author believes in parental authority exercised in love, and I have to tell you that his ideas worked for us. My "problem" child is still spirited, but she also listens to me now, and close family agree that she's more pleasant to be around and even happier. As the author predicted, at first we had to discipline constantly (and this wasn't spanking for those who are worried about that), but now that she knows we mean business, we discipline less often than before we read this book, and with better results. For us, this book has been a lifesaver, and compared to many of the cases from his practice that Dr. Guarendi shares, our problems were really mild! If you want to be a *more* loving parent who can discipline effectively and consistently and calmly, get this book, read it, and then implement the ideas.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2005-01-05

I first learned about Dr. Ray from a friend who read this book. Since then, I have purchased every one of Dr. Ray's books and even downloaded his wonderful 13-part audio series from the EWTN web site (...)This book has helped me more in my parenting than any other that I have read, and I have read several. Dr. Ray gives you a no-nonsense approach based on his premise that the one thing parents of today need the most is confidence (at least the parents who are willing to read a book about parenting, that is). What makes this book stand out is that not only will it help you in rearing your child, it will also give you a new perspective when reading other parenting books.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it........2004-01-09

I love Dr Ray's common sense and sense of humor! Read it!

        Product Description

Parents now can enjoy the award-winning Common Sense Parenting® program in the comfort of their own home - this kit addresses the needs of parents who lack either the time or the resources to attend evening classes or weekend workshops. The DVD contains three hours of content, allowing viewers to sit in on actual parenting classes and watch a skilled trainer explain parenting techniques. Hear answers to questions asked by participants, watch taped vignettes of problem situations and see how the skills are implemented. Exercises are also included to test viewer's comprehension of the concepts. A workbook accompanies the tapes to reinforce and expand on key points made by the trainer and to outline the steps of each parenting technique presented. Written copies of the exercises are included. The DVD is sleeved in the back of the book. Topics of the six class sessions include: parents as teachers; encouraging positive behavior; preventing misbehavior; correcting problem behavior; helping children succeed in school, and handling emotionally intense situations.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Common Sense.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent book for parents who want more information and tips on how to spank with love. This book doesn't advocate abuse or "hitting."

1 out of 5 stars Whack 'em with a spoon???.......2006-01-03

Yikes! This author is into child abuse, recommending beating little kids with objects. Dangerous advice, unless you're in the mood to get arrested. Try directing your anger on a pillow or punching bag instead. It's a lot safer than beating up your child. Try accepting normal child behavior and keep your cool.
